NLL report for the new season just started!" Myk Aussie
"If
you are the Commissioner of the National Lacrosse League,
you have to be scratching your head wondering….
Plans for a 12-team (or
more) league faded when only Minnesota
was accepted as an expansion team for this year.
Edmonton and Winnipeg were also mentioned as possibilities
as well as mild interest from other NBA or
NHL teams who wanted to fill their buildings, but no
one stepped forward. Vancouver could not get its ownership
problems settled and with a noticeable 2000 fan
drop in attendance from 2003 to 2004 it started to look
bleak. Even a move to the older arena from GM Place
fell through and the Ravens said bye-bye.
So
we are at 10 teams in the 2005 version of the NLL. Philly,
Toronto, Colorado are all strong franchises and
no one has to worry too much about attendance. It’s
the other teams that should worry the Commish. Arizona’s
home opener drew only 5900…not much difference
from last year’s average. The Arizona Sting
share the building with the now-idle NHL Phoenix Coyotes.
Anaheim’s second year began with only 5700 showing
up at the Pond for their home opener, which is only
1000 better than last year. Maybe a 1-15 record is
not something to build off of. San Jose has 7000 at
its home opener. That would be a nice percentage improvement
over last year if it were sustained (5000 last
year), but if the Ravens could not survive on 8000
fans a game, what do you think the chances of these
three surviving? Oh, by the way, these two buildings
also have NHL teams as tenants. Any thought of
those hockey season ticket holders becoming rabid lacrosse fans has not
yet materialized, but it is early
in the New Year." Ken Saroka, MykWebT.V.

Sat, Nov 6 04' "The
Minnesota Swarm a new team in the NLL" Moose
Big news in the National Lacrosse
League. Not only is there a video out I just got on the Calgary Roughnecks first
Championship, called: "War on the Floor' but also there is now a new team;
The Minnesota Swarm. The Cincinnati Swarm of Af2 only lasted one season 2003, so
the nickname is unused until now. The Buffalo Bandits have announced they have
signed three free agent players: F Jonas Derks (not 'jerks), D John Donnelly and
F Garrett Cree to one year contracts.
The Roughnecks meanwhile aim to
keep their Championship squad together by resigning D Brad MacDonald, F Jessie
Phillips (no relation to Larry Phillips), F/D Taylor Wray to two-year contracts.
They also signed D Craig Gelsvik to a one-year deal with an option. The
Rocherster Knighthawks (not Norfolk Nighthawks) have named Sean Fitts Ast.H.
Coach. The Swarm have now completed their inaugural Coaching staff by signing
Derek Moffat and Adam Mueller." Moose

The Calgary
Roughnecks defeated the Buffalo Bandits, 14-11, in front of a massive sellout
crowd of 19,209 fans at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Fridee night in the NLL
National Lacrosse League Champion's Cup Final. How about this the fella I met
several weeks ago Curtis Palidwor was named Championship Game MVP with 41 saves.
I bet these Roughnecks will now be even more popular with the hot Cwoc's. Keep
reading below for some great pictures as I met up with the Roughnecks a few
weeks ago in Vancouver. Well done Roughnecks especially as they only joined the
NLL a couple of years ago" Myk Aussie

Update By: Rich Salzer
The New Champions Cup looks awesome! I saw the former Cup on 15 Sept. 2000,
Pinball's last game as player before he became 'just' Coach of the Toronto
Argonauts. The Toronto Rock were at SkyDome outside, that day with their trophy
and Championship rings. Got a nice autographed posted of the Rock from Rick
Veltman. The 2004 Coach of the Year in the N.L.L was Coach Paul Day of the
Rochester Knight- hawks (not to be confused with the late, former Norfolk Af2
variety!).
Nice going Paul!

NLL Update: By: Ken T. Saroka
The Philadelphia Wings miss the
playoffs for the second straight year and it's the third straight year of
a .500 season or worse. Look for changes in the management. 3-5 record at
home. Attendance was sub par for Arizona and Anaheim. Ownership search is
almost completed to takeover the Vancouver Ravens.
Playoff preview:
RD 1 (EAST) Buffalo @
Rochester--costly loss by Buffalo to Philly (who had nothing to play for
at that time) on 4/3 gives Rochester (who made the playoffs the day
before by beating the Wings) the home floor.
Rochester beat Toronto the next week
to end their regular and rides a good hot streak...ROCH by 4.
RD 1 (WEST) WOW! Calgary got the
2005 All-Star Game and got into the playoffs. They will travel to San
Jose's Shark Tank to take on the Stealth. Stealth split games at the
Shark Tank with Calgary and won in Calgary in their only trip into the
Saddledome.
Attendance in San Jose was not
strong so no home floor advantage here. TOSS-UP.
Look for 2 East Coast additions to
the league next year. Nashville Predators ownership wined and dined the
NLL Commish last month. Indiana Pacers are also looking for another
tennant in the CONSECO FIELDHOUSE. Surpisingly (or not depending on how
your view it) no ownership groups have stepped forward in the (field)
lacrosse hotbeds of Balt-Wash or Boston. Announcements may come as early
as the Championship game. Did You Know?? Current defendant Jayson
Williams was part owner of the then NJ Storm of the NLL. In a
Constitutional Republic it's your vote that counts; In feudalism it's
your count that votes." Ken

Below: OK why not, lets have more
of Deanna & Tara as I made sure my new mate Tim Micallef from The Score joined
in for another great picture. The NLL is a expanding game in Canada & the US.
Tim traveled from Toronto to Vancouver to report on the big clash for The Score,

While I was at The Shark Club I
got to have a chat to Roughneck players goalie Curtis Paldiwer & Jesse Phillips

Wed, Jan 21 04' "The NLL season has started! Ken's NLL report!" Myk
Aussie
From: Kenneth Saroka
A very schizophrenic start to the NLL season, a season that almost never was due
to a labor dispute that has not been solved (they are playing under the terms of
the old collective bargaining agreement).
In the East--the Philadelphia Wings get Jake Bergey back in the line-up after
missing all of last year and win their first two games on the road in hostile
places (Rochester and Buffalo) and they play one of their worst ever home games
losing to Rochester 17-11 (the 6 goal loss ties a home record for poorest
performance in the regular season). The Wings were up 5-2 in the first
quarter but then gave up 9 straight
goals forcing Dallas Eliuk from the nets. The Wings were outshot 33-9 in
the second and third quarters. The game was a real stinker.
Toronto--Head Coach Les Bartley is undergoing treatments for colon cancer and
just does not seem to be the same dominant team, losing at Rochester and then
needing a kick in the pants in the second quarter to get past Calgary. The
East, on paper seems tougher than the West, but it may just be survival of the
fittest as each team plays the other 4 times.
Attendance: Last year Columbus, Albany, New Jersey, Ottawa, and New York were
all dregs, hovering around 5000 per game. The relocated teams have done
somewhat better--Anaheim drew almost 7000 for their first home game, Arizona
drew 12,000 for the home opener but only 5500 for their second home game, San
Jose drew 8000, and Vancouver also is averaging 8000. Calgary has yet to open at
home. Marginal improvement but the labor strife may have cost some fannies in
the seats." Ken, MYKwebWORLD reporter

Also from the NLL: Columbus
Landsharks to move to Phoenix and be run by the
Phoenix Coyotes and play in a new arena in Glendale beginning this
season.
Sets up an odd combination of 10 teams--6 western, only two of which have
been around more than one year (Calgary/Vancouver) and 4 eastern. The
league has jettisoned the teams that have labored to get 5000 fans
(Ottawa,
NY, NJ, Columbus, Albany). You would think that lacrosse would
be bigger
in the east, but you have to add to the previous list of dog teams other
previous failures (Washington, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Boston)." Ken

Yes Myk
Aussie the rest of the league is in a bit of turmoil as relocation talks
muddy the water! Either Montreal (who was inactive last season) or Ottawa
will relocate to either Winnipeg or San Jose. The New York Saints are
also a possible move to either Regina or another American City my inside
sources tell me.
The CFL turf issue @ Montreal & possible Arenafootball2 expansion are
also factors in the N.L.L. off season of discontent as well. McGill Univ.
wants to attract the Commonwealth games that have eluded Halifax for '04,
and
that is a factor as well. I will do updates very sporadically in the
N.L.L
off season, however I thought I had enough to post on our site for
now." Moose

No Sarrs here!!! Toronto Rock said Happy Cinco De Mayo yesterday w/ a
stunning 8-6 win over the Rochester Knighthawks for their 4th N.L.L
Championship in the last five seasons! The Rock have been in the
Championship five years in a row as well. (They lost to Ken Saroka's
Philly cheesesteak Wings 3 yrs. ago, though)
The Rock held Rochester scoreless for 22+ minutes yesterday &
finished off
the knighthawks w/ a 5-0 scoring run in the crucial 3rd quarter
yesterday.
Lead by Moose's buddy, capt'n Jim Veltman's 2 scores & 1 assist the
Rock
brought home the National Lacrosse League Nth Amer. National title,

Can anyone spell D-Y-N-A-S-T-Y?! Now if only my Dallas Stars, Orlando
Predators or Saskatchewan Roughriders can pull the
hat trick this year, Moose will really have a truly great year!

The 2003 National Lacrosse League Championship game has been set for
Sat.,May 3rd @ Blue Cross Arena in Rochester New York @ 8:05pm. The four
time Champion Toronto Rock will be on the road v. the Rochester
Knighthawks, who have won the N.L.L title once before.
The meeting comes about as the Rock defeated John Elway/Pat Bolen &
Stan Kronke's Colorado Mammoth, 15-11. It was a rough week for the big
three of Denver Sports as Elway/Bolen/Kronke's Colorado Crush took it on
the chin in Arena Football this weekend also. Rochester advances to the
title after beating the Buffalo Bandits, 16-13. Moose is predicting my
Rock will come out victorious - my tip - Toronto 17-Rochester 14. Back

Go Toronto Rock, who've been in four straight N.L.L. Championship games
winning 3. Folks don't look now but the second female ever to play in a
man's Pro league just tended goal last week for the New Jersey Storm
last weekend.
Shades of Manon Rheaume in goal for the '92 expansion Tampa Bay Lightning
of the NHL, Ms Ginny Capicchioni, the backup Jersey goalie came in relief
of the 2nd period w/ the Vancouver Ravens ahead last Sat. in Continental
Air Arena in the jersey meadowlands, following an injury. Capicchioni,
had just been called up from the minors. Shades of my girl, Manon, &
into the lineup she went.
It didn't matter anyway as the Ravens beat jersey, 18-9 was the final.
Way
to go, Ginny! I know Manon will be proud when she hears about it."
