Sun, Sept 14, 03 "One on one with Duncan "Crazykicker" O'Mahony the Calgary Stampeders star punter!" Myk Aussie

Duncan O'Mahony the Irish, Australian, Canadian burst onto the CFL scene in 2001 as the new Calgary Stampeder Punter. After a great CIS career punting and kicking with the University of BC Duncan was selected by Wally Buono as the Punter under controversy in 2001. Long time Stamps Punter Tony Martino was released along with many other star Stamps players in 2001. After a very average first half of the 2001 season the Stampeders lead by Quarterback Marcus Crandell hit form and went onto win the 2001 CFL Grey Cup in Montreal. As I was filming longtime Kicker Mark McLoughlin in the locker rooms after their great win Mark said that Duncan had his best game of the year and was a big factor in the amazing Stamps victory.

In 2002 Duncan's second year in the CFL he had an amazing year. Duncan led the CFL in net punt average and second in gross punting average. Duncan the Irish born lad that also lived in Perth, Western Australia as a youngster was nominated as Calgary’s player for the “CFL Special Teams Player of the Year Award”. In 2003 Duncan “Crazykicker” as he calls himself on email has again been very consistent for the Stampeders. Due to the Stamps poor season he has had many punts.

In Round 12 of the 2003 season Mark McLoughlin retired after a great career kicking goals for the Stampeders to take up front office duties. Duncan now gets his chance to not only punt but now kick the ever important three point field goals

Myk Aussie: First of all Duncan it was great to meet up with you in BC in the off season for the CFL/Aussie Rules Football style kicking contest. Are you OK to do this interview for Total-CFL.com or do you have to first get permission from the officials down there at the Stampeders?

Duncan: No problems Myk.  I can do this piece for you.

Myk Aussie: Alright! “Crazykicker” you must have felt so lucky to win the Grey Cup in your first CFL season. What are your fondest memories from that great day in the Big O?

Duncan: Well first of all it was the second largest attended Grey Cup in CFL history, and it was so loud the entire game in that stadium I could not hear some of the calls that were being made by my teammates on the field so we had to resort to hand signals. My parents had flown to Montreal from Vancouver and my brother had even flown in just for the game from his home in Tokyo.

Myk Aussie: In 2002 you became a very consistent punter. You must have been delighted to be in the finalists for the "CFL Special Team’s Player of the Year Award". But why weren't you in Edmonton at the CFL awards? I would have thought all finalists would have been there?

Duncan: Well I was one of the five team finalists from the Western conference and from those five finalists only one was chosen to represent the West and one from the East and it was those two individuals that got to go to Edmonton for Grey Cup week.

Myk Aussie: Disappointing, CFL money constraints I suppose, it was a great night. After your great 2002 season you were approached by some NFL teams and you mentioned to me during our kicking contest that you had tryouts with the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts. What happened? Were you offered a contract with either of these teams? Did you simply say no I'm not quite ready to go to the NFL yet? Were you a bit scared to play and live in the US after the recent 9/11 disaster and thus you felt safer up here in Western Canuckland? Or was it your BC Cwoc (Cool Woman Of Canada) that wouldn’t let you go to the NFL?

Duncan: No Myk my BC Cwoc would be supportive of what ever I choose, as she is the Greatest! I got a contract offer from the Indianapolis Colts but the terms of the deal was not what I expected it to be so I decided to pass it by and wait till after this season when I am a free agent to go at it again. I felt like I gave it my all but I did learn a few things that I need to work on that are not part of the kicking game up here in Canada.

Myk Aussie: I based myself in Alberta as this is the heart of the CFL with many great Stampeder and Eskimo fans. But Duncan it has personally been driving me nuts here in Calgary the past six or so weeks with the way the Calgary media continually bag the hell out of the F-Troop and especially Kevin F-Troop being back up Quarterback. We all know Marcus is #1 QB and Kevin is #2 and learning. Many CFL teams as soon as the #1 QB goes down they are in big trouble with their #2 QB. You mentioned to me Saturday night that Kevin is a popular guy at the Stampeders. Can you elaborate on this “sickening” and ever-continuing Calgary media talk situation?

Duncan: Kevin is a good person and a good football player who is continually getting better and learning the Canadian game. As with regards to the media and the constant barrage of stories around the F-Troop and company, it is always harder for the media to cover a team when they are having a losing season.  This year they have turned their primary attention away from the players and coaches and have lost sight in my mind as to the issue at hand. Some people have called this misdirection a distraction for the players, but the players feel that it is more an annoyance because all we ever read in the paper is management issues and not the more common player profiles, performance of players or just little tid-bits.

Myk Aussie: Great answer Duncan. I feel the same way thus the reason for this interview with you. I know you rushed off last year from Moose’s Bar to go to dinner with the F-Troop. Michael Feterik is obviously fond of your football abilities? I have met him several time myself, he does seem a very nice man and obviously a smart businessman. He also seems to know football as well. Do you think the Stamps fans will ever except the fact that Michael is here to stay and his son Kevin will always be QB either #1, #2 or #3? That’s the way I see it although latest developments suggest this may not be correct.

Duncan: I think once things settle down around here and F-troop and company keep a little bit quieter the fans will realize that our owner is here to stay and that he only has the team’s best interest in mind.  Kevin will be here as long as he is under contract, and once his contract is up we will have to wait and see what management wants to do.

Myk Aussie: What did you think of the 15 min MYKwebTV show and VHS of the Grey Cup 2001 win that you were a star in? Even though this won me an A-Channel Calgary guest reporter’s job unfortunately it seems I upset a couple of officials down at the Stampeders.

Duncan: I think that your style of promotion and coverage most definitely appeals to the typical CFL fan. From an organizational standpoint they have to keep in mind all the young fans and families who are just beginning to come out and become season ticket holders. The last things they want to do is offend someone or turn them off to Stampeders Football, because something was taken in the wrong context.  I think that your target audience with your style of coverage is aimed more towards the late teenager up to the thirty something crowd.  These people make up a large percentage of CFL fans across the country and need to be aware of the kind of work that you are doing. Myk you are certainly a one of a kind personality and never change what you do because of what one person says to you.  Even though you want to help the Stamps it may not be the right place to begin at this time, All it takes is one good response from another team and then people here in Calgary will realize that they have missed out on something big!!!!

Myk Aussie: Yes my Australian background came out thinking all I showed would have been OK but not so in the conservative “can’t upset anyone” “but that’s OK” Canada my new home! How do you feel about Sports fans all over the World seeing you as a Football Star in Canada after 1.000’s watched our kicking contest on PC TV?

Duncan: I think I feel very fortunate to be recognized as a sports personality around Canada and in other places that I am known. In the pro sports business you are not always going to be in the limelight, and I feel very strongly about taking advantage of the position I am in. I most definitely want to get into some sort of career outside of football while I playing football. As of right now I do not know exactly what path I will take but I do know that by being a Professional athlete will help me get there, and because of this I am very grateful.

Myk Aussie: Crazykicker can you come and join me and your ex Stampeder mates at the BC Lions in 2004? You say you’re a free agent after this season or are you going to the NFL you think?

Duncan: Yes, Myk I am a free agent after this season and my first priority is to try and seek employment in the NFL. After I have exhausted all my options south of the border I will have to sit back and weigh all of my options up here in Canada. I did spend a good deal of time growing up in the lower mainland of British Columbia and I still call this my home since I live there in the off season, but I really like Calgary, the city, the people, and the potential I see here for success in Business. Only time will tell…….Duncan

Myk Aussie: Duncan "Crazykicker" thanks for this excellent interview! Your 1st goal kick in the CFL was one you probably don't want to remember but I know you can kick goals. You did it in the CIS, Wally drafted you to the Stamps to one day take over from Mark. The time is now!

But more importantly I had the pleasure of seeing you kick some great field goals that fantastic day in Abbottsford in March this year. Total-CFLers this is one of the best Sports PC TV shows I have ever done a 4 Part 20 minute Total-CFLwebTV show of "Myk & Duncan in a CFL/Aussie Rules Football kicking contest" Good luck Duncan as you continue to star in the CFL." Your mate Myk Aussie.
