Players
and things to keep an eye on: Obviously I can't know everything about
all schools, player, et, al, so
I'm gonna keep mainly an eye on Virginia NCAA
& of course Hawai'i.
But here some other players and schools that have interesting
goings on that I noticed recently:
**)Gotta love Univ. of Virginia WR
Ottawa Anderson's name. I think this guy may
end up playing for the CFL's
Renegades some day. He'll be a good target for Darnell
Kennedy and Brad Banks.
**)Fear
the Turtle? Maryland's WR/KR Steve Suter is the fastest man in the ACC!
**)The
59th Hula Bowl will be held in Maui, Hawai'i (naturally, Moose!) on January
22, 2005. Be there, Aloha!
**)The
Hawai'i Bowl has been moved back from Melikaliki Maka Day to Dec. 24th,
2004 in Honolulu of course. The
Conference USA winner plays the number 1, 2 or
3 seed from the W.A.C. I predict
Memphis v. Hawai'i
**)Watch
for Albert Toe'aina, OT at Tennesee. How did a hawai'ian boy get all
the way to the volunteer
state?
**)Watch
also for Taitusi Lutui, OL, USC to light up the P.A.C 10

Sat,
July 3 04 "NCAA Update - Univ. of Hawai'i Offence to go "Ka-
Chang" this year!" Moose
"NCAA
Uni of Hawaii on MYKwebWORLD is massive. Can't wait! Hope you enjoyed my Arena
footy reporting." Moose
Hawai'i
Warrior QB Timmy Chang has an odd practice partner; to hone his
deep ball, which is a
critical part of former NFL /CFL QB & Coach June Jones Run'N'Shot
offence, Chang practices
throwing downfield at a trash can 45 yards away. His success
so far: "It's hard to
hit from that distance but I'm getting closer all the time."
That will get him closer to
"trashing" Ty Detmer's 15,035 career NCAA passing yards. Chang
is at nearly 13,000 now
with his senior year to go. Amazing when you consider he lost
his starting job as a
red-shirt freshman after three games to senior Nick Rolovich,
who passed for a Hawai'i
school record 34 TDs in just nine games that year.
Then, as a red-shirt
sophomore he split seven
games with another senior and fellow local kid, Shawn Withy-Allen,
a moose of a QB at
6'5",230 lbs. who averaged 6 yards per carry in '02. In fact
Chang's Saint Louis Crusaders
only lost one game in his four high school years; you guessed
it - to Withy's Kalaheo
Surfriders! While Rolovich, who palyed for ArenaBowl Champ San
Jose this year and With,
who plays for the Af2 Hawai'i Islanders hone their skills indoors,
Chang, who has been at
least a part-time starter for four seasons is a potential Heisman
Candidate. It wasn't all
rainbows in Manoa for Chang last season as he was benched
for two games in favor of
yet another senior, Jason (Opie) Whieldon in '03. But when
Whieldon got hurt in the
Bowl game last Christmas, Chang passed for 476 yards and five
TDs in the triple overtime
win over the University of Houston.
Says Jones: "He'll
break the NCAA mark in game
six; and then he'll eventually put the mark out of reach
(forever)..." This
year Chang, who Jones admitted he rushed into the starting lineup,
averages two interceptions
per game in an average 52 attempts per, "If you can't handle
the pressure, you're not a
player. So don't expect Chang to get the hook this year with
five inexperienced backups
behind him. Unless of course it's just "garbage time" Moose
Sat,
June 5 04 "University of Hawai'i Warriors 2004" Keali'i Kalua-Moose
Coaching:
H.Coach June Jones, the former NFL/CFL QB and USFL/CFL/NFL Ast.
& H.Coach is now 40-24 in five seasons at the helm of his (and my) Alma
Mater. Jones recently got a five-yr.-4 million$ extention that should keep
him in poi, apaka-paka, cocnut and
pineaplles for some time. His outstanding staff
lost Offencive Ast. Tyson Hilton but retains longtime Ast(s). such as Ron
(WRs) & bro. Cal Lee (Hawai'i
Islanders - Af2 H.Coach/ LBs & STs Coach), Rich
Miano (DBs), Wes Suan (RBs), Dan Morrison (QBs), George Lumpkin (D-line
& D-Coordinator) and John Cavanaugh (O-line). QBs:
Fifth-yr. Sr. Tim Chang looks to be the sixth consecutive QB Jones
has moved on to a Pro League; Tim Carey (Ar.FL), Dan Robinson (NFL E), Nick
Rolovich (NFL/NFL E/Ar.FL), Jared Flint & Shawn Withy-Allen (both in f2).
Rolovich &
Withy-Allen still active. Tim could hit 17,000+ yards passing
this season (He's at 12,968 now) and become the NCAAs alltime leader in
passing yardage ahead of Ty {7
INTs in-a-game} Detmer. This is pretty scary
when you consider Rolovich and Withy-Allen actually split time with him
THEIR Sr. yrs. Timmy will have the job all to himself this go-around.
Last yr. he lost four starts to Sr. late bloomer Jason (Opie) Whieldon.
With Opie graduated, Mike Rhode,
Kainoa Akina, Nick's little bro., Jack
Rolovich and underrated Ryan Stickler, who could be another Withy-Allen,
are in reserve. Out of contention because they've been permanently
moved to other positions are:
LB/ST Chad Kapanui and WR/DB Se'e Poumele.
Easily the Warriors strongest position.
RBs:
It all basically depends on if West Keli'ikipi's knee is 100%. When
he got hurt with five games left in the campaign it caused an awful shuffle
of bodies as Soph Pesefea Fiaseu, Jr. quit at mid-season due to a lack
of playing time. Newcomer Kala Latusela became a good backup last season
until he too got hurt. Then the club moved 5'11", 260-lb. 3rd-string
OLm Lyle Castro from number #61 to
#41 and his blocking helped out down the
stretch. The rest of the gang here includes the most inconsistent bunch
of 'tweeners this side of Kordell Stewart. Mike Bass, who's lil'
bro. Ray is a reserve DB, Michael Brewster, who was outstanding in the triple-overtime
win in the Mili Kelikimaka Day Bowl game and Latusla return.
Kapanui has been a runner on trick plays and Poumele, despite his slight
build, was a Withy-Allen-style option QB early last season. Don't count
out Kila Kamakawiwo'ole, who also plays the U-back position calling the
signals for the punt teams. Corey Donahue has transferred to Colorado.
WRs:
Since there are no TEs, of course, in the CFL-style 4-WR/SB Run-and-Shoot
Offence, Jones has lined up such luminaries as DE Kevin Jackson,
Withy-Allen and DLm Abu Ma'afala ther on gadget plays with occasional
success. The four starters will probably be: Chad Owens, Nate
Ilaoa (from here in Virginia!), either Poumele or Sr. Gerald Welch and
Brit Komine. Jason Rivers, a true Frosh who was awful last season until
the final two games. He's tall, fast and mistake-prone. Mike Akiu,Jr. and
Kanale George have transferred to get playing time elsewhere. Along with
Rivers, Denny Flangan and Sean Stennis, fast but inconsistent return. The
Warriors lost three good players in reserves Michael Myashiro, Cliff Herbert
and starter Jeremiah Cockheran. The Warriors second best unit. Special
Teams: Kapanui and Kamakawiwo'ole are key here as they switched positions
with Kapanui moved permanently to LB. K Justin Ah Yat, Brian's bro.
messed up on 10 XPs and was benched after game seven, though he did
play in the Bowl game. Luckily Nolan Miranda turned out to be OK as a
Soph.
At punter Brian Milne replaced Tim Wright after two games and was
fantastic down the stretch v. Alabama and in the Bowl game. Coverage was
better last year and should improve as last years Sophs and Juniors are one
more yr. experienced. Trick plays abound with June and his staff and that's
where former reserve QBs Poumele and Kapanui come in. Offencive
Line: Easily the weakest position not that these guys aren't physically
strong. Just green. All five could
lose their jobs this year as more experienced
players are one year older. Jones
took a huge gamble on three sophs and a frosh
last year and it resulted in
injured QBs (Chang and Whieldon). Five players got
snaps at pivot and this year
bigger more experienced bodies are needed. Sr.s Phil
Kauffman and Chad Kahale should start with technique-akamai and under- sized
Derek Fa'avi too small (6'0" 269) at centre. Two other young players,
Sam Satele and Uriah Moenoa did
pretty well and have some size. Tala Esera and
Brian Eaton's biggest problems are finding a permanent positions. Others who
could see playing time include: Herc Satele, Sam's bro., Lui Faga and Lui
Fuga, a medical red-shirt who's
played both sides of the ball in his five yrs.
here. Kanohao LaCount is
also still here.
The Warriors lost Castro, Kajoka Defencive
Line: Could be the third best unit of the Warriors this season. Faga
and Fuga could be inside, or on the 'O' line with Abu Ma'afala, Kama- kawiwo'ole,
who just keeps getting bigger, Mel Purcell, Tony Akpan and Alama
Francis, who's dad is former NFL'r Russ Francis, TE with the Patriots and
49ers. Three of this unit's players are suspended for the season opener for
the bench clearing brawl at the end of the Christmas Bowl game. The Warriors
lost Lance Samuseva, Keali'i Aguiar, Ike Sopoaga, Travis LaBoy and Jackson.
LBs: The second most hurt area due
to graduation: the Warriors lost Chad Kalilimoku,
Keani Alapa and reserve Vili Taufa. Returing are: Kapanui, Ikaika
Blackburn, Ikaika Curnan, Kilanahe
Noa, L'aina Wong, Anapati Mailo and Watson
Ho'olulu. Kapanui, Curnan and Noa should be the starters but Wong
and Ho'olulu could scrape by. This area better get good quick!
DBs: The Warriors lost Dave Gilmore, Kelvin Milhouse and Hyrum Peters. Lenny
Peters, Brian Hollingsworth, Kenny Patton and Matt Manuma will' be
the starting unit to open the season unless unseated by either Omega Hogan
or Orlando Wong. Another area of some concern due to inexperience. Outlook:
With a relatively easy schedule and Chang trying to be a Heisman candidate
(I don't think he'll get it, but I'm pulling for him nonetheless) they
should do something they haven't
done yet for Jones - win the W.A.C! I am
predicting an 11-3 season and back to at least the Hawai'i Bowl." Moose

Two
University of Hawai'i Warriors were chosen in the NFL draft:
DL
Ike Sopoaga, DE Travis LaBoy, QBs chosen:
J.P
Losman, Tulane (I'll never forget that fourth quarter shoot-out w/ Univ. of
Hawai'i's Shawn Withy-Allen in the (then) Con-Agra Hawai'i Bowl 12/25 when they
both passed for over 200 yards and 2 DTs apiece in the fourth quarter alone!
This kid Losman is the real deal. No Manning here!
Matt Schaub, Virginia. Mechanically correct and smart kid with enough arm to be
Mike Vick's REAL BACK-up for a decade...
Josh Harris, an accurate, Withy-Allen type runner who can power it or finesse
you out of your jock. Craig Krenzel, THE Ohio State as our friend Ospunt-boy
from Hawai'i says. Should be a good back-up {Jeff Rut;edge-type} for a decade
himself. A winner. A lot like Gary Kubiak, who gets my vote (by this " much) for
best NFL back-up ever.
Casey Bramlett, Wyoming. Big and strong with an accurate arm. Should be at least
an Arena Bowl winner in the future. Fits more the Arena League mold.
Luke McCown, Louisiana Tech. One of the three McCown bros to stand out in
college. Like the Huards. His main bro is starter for the dreadful Cardinals.
Poorkid!
Matt Mauck, LSU. Should be a good CFL'r. Won't make Denver unless they drop two
other pivots. Wouldn't probably make it Arenaball unless he bulks up in the
upper body.
Bradlee Van Pelt, Colorado. Also drafted by Denver with it's QB guru Coach
Shanahan. Unless he can beat out Jarious Jackson and (see above) Broncos trade
former Arena Leaguer, Danny Kanell, there's no room on team. Could be a practice
squader of future NFL E pivot. Not enough moblity for the CFL.
B.J.
Symons, Texas Tech. The Texans already have a spot open on the roster for him. A
local kid and since Dave (ragarm) Ragone was awful last year {actually he wasn't
that good!) he'll be number three by default!
Jim
Sorgi, Wisconsin. Reminds some of a Bob Galiano-type. Don't say "Who's Bob
Galiano?" A good career #3 or #2 or spot starter who is coachable and doesn't
get hurt much. Should have a long career in either the CFL or NFL.
Phil Rivers, North Carolina. He's actually glad to be in San Diego. Not like
that other guy. Now if he can beat out Flutie before the Chargers are 1-4, we
might see the guy who I think is the best pivot coming out of US University
Football this spring. Actually he and Flutieball may be the best one-two QB
combo in their Div this season! Now if the fLUTERs ER, AH cHARGERS would just
drop that Brees guy...Hhmmm.
Andy Hall, Delaware. Broke all of NFL'r Rich Gannon and Ar.FL'r Matt Nagy's
marks at Delaware. He could play in the CFL or NFL right now as a back up. Has a
real good throwing arm and running ability. If he turns out to be as Coachable
as he was in college, he's the steal of the draft for QBs (DL Ike Sopoaga is the
steal of the draft overall!)
Ben
Roethlisberger. The man among this group. May start next year or late this year.
Depending if he can beat out Comeback kid Tommy Maddox. Best combo of size, arm,
running, intangibles out of any QBs drafted. Unless you believe in Eli {"I don't
want to go to warm weather San Diego- WAhhhhhhhh!}Manning. He's a Manning so I
don't! Poor Giants!

First things first, as Kurt Warner says. I made a gross error last week in my
column by saying that Nick Saban and LSU won the National title and of course it
should be Former New York Jet and Patriots coach Pete Carroll, who has season
tix to the Ar.Fl Los Angeles Avengers and is now coach of the University of
Southern California Trojans, who won the B.C.S. Championship. I had Nick on the
mind since he recently turned down the Chicago Bears offer to coach that team.
They are currently trying to hire ex-Washington 'O'line great, Russ Grimm, who
was on Pittsburgh's staff last year. (Joe Gibbs would also like to get his
former 'O'linemen, Grimm for his staff." Moose

Jan 10 04 "Mooses NCAA Update/Hawai'i
Radio Update!"
"Howzit! First things first. Congratulations to Coach Nick Saban and the
Univerisity of Louisiana State Tigers on winning the '03-'04 NCAA
National Championship. Last night I went on KUMU 2 radio in Honolulu
with Randy Myamoto and Scott 'Akua nolo' Ka'alele and we discussed
the University of Hawai'i's moves to try to get into the top 20 football
programs in the country. We discussed the injury situation late in the
year as RB Pesefea Fiaseu quit the team around Thanksgiving, depleting
the Warrior 'O' backfield depth. Plug of the week to Dee's Diner in Na
'puna'puna for their 'Sports Rap' combo: teriyaki/spam/lomi-lomi & monapua
- no mad cow here!
I talked about my new book, "Rich Salzer's Best Damn Sports Book,
period", which is at the printer right now being readied for publication.
20 copies will come off the presses first and it will be ready, hopefully on the
site e-store in Feb. I should be back in the Islands in April or May, depending
on the Af2 Hawai'ian Islanders schedule. We talked about the demise of the
Norfolk Nighthawks and Richmond Speed and 4 other bottomfeeders in the Af2 and
the new teams that will replace
them. Super Bowl Wayne will be at the Media Centre along with Hawai'i DL Coach
Vance Singletary covering the KUMU radio table and switchboard. Looking back at
the Warriors 9-5 season, which was successful, but...With all the injuries and inconsistencies
and that young 'O' line, I think the best is yet to come. I stuck my neck out on
the line in predicting a 13-1 season for the Warriors next year as Timmy Chang
goes for the Heisman. If he should win it, he would be the first University of
Hawai'i player to ever get the trophy for best college player in the country.
Here is the returning Hawai'i Warriors starters for the spring mini-camp coming
up in three months:

QB - Timmy Chang, Kainoa Akina, Mike Rhode
RB - West Keli'ikipi III, Mike Bass, Kala
