NCAA MYKwebTV coming!" Myk Aussie
As expected, senior QB Jason White of the University of Oklahoma won the 67th
John Heisman trophy as US College Football's best player. I have great respect
for White, who overcame two serious knee operations (one on each knee) to come
back and play his senior year and wish him luck in the Pros, whatever League he
ends up playing in. But my personal choice would have been Larry Fitzgerald, the
WR from Pittsburgh. But as most realize, sophomores usually don't get picked.
Good job to the top three players getting votes!
A Truibute to John Gigliardi - College Football's Winningest Coach
In October Minnesota's Saint John's University's John Gigliardi won his record
410th victory in his 42nd year coaching at the Divsion III School. He passed
Grambling State's Eddie Robinson, who's two sons have played in the NFL and who
coached at Grambling for 53 years. Only Amos Alonzo Stagg and Bobby Bowden have
coached longer than Giglairdi and Robinson. Hawai'i's June Jones has now a
record of 40 wins and 25 losses. Hawai'i plays in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on
Mele Kelekemaka Day, Dec. 25th v. the University of Houston Cougars.

Last
week I said in this column that if the University of Hawai'i QB shuffle blew up
in June Jones face it would be his own fault for making the system too 'user
friendly'. Well, it didn't quite blow up in Coach's face but Hawai'i still lost,
42-28 to better playing Boise St. team, with a better record. Boise St., now
ranked in the top 20 teams in the final regular season polls for the NCAA,
didn't make many mistakes while the University of Hawai'i made enough to lose
the game.
Jones started sr. Jason Whieldon at QB in a sort of a surprise move and didn't
put Timmy Chang in until 13:01 left in the FOURTH Qtr! By then all Boise St. had
to do was lay their ears back and wait for Timmy to throw a bad, which he did on
his 15th throw, and the INT. finished any Warrior thoughts off about an upset.
Initially Jones said Timmy would come in 2nd (now did he mean 2nd quarter or 2nd
half?), which he did. Only one gaget play this week as LB/Up-back on punting
unit, Chad Kapnui flipped a reverse hand off to reserve DB Omega Hogan, who like
Kapanui came to Hawai'i as a QB, and Hogan lost seven yards. After Hawai'i
scored first the Warrior defence held Boise St. (surprisingly) on their first
two possessions. Then following the failed trick play, the Broncos (Boise, not
Denver, Myk) scored to tie the game at 7-7. It was a lowscoring 1st quarter as a
nervous Jason Whiledon threw up following his TD pass on the game's first
scoring drive.
Many expected the Warriors to pull Whieldon after he threw his second INT. but
Jones gave the sr. from Orange County California 3 more series in the second
half. It's my guess that Opie will not start in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on
Christmas Day v. University of Houston Cougars. Once again opinions are like
earlobes, almost everybody has AT LEAST ONE but I would let Timmy start and let
Jason, since he was a sr. play the second half. Give 'em each a half. That would
be fair plus I don't think University of Houston will beat the Warriors at home
on Mele Kalekemaka Day.
The University of Hawai'i Warriors regular season in review...What happened?
By: Rich Kelai'i Salzer
1) Injuries - West Keli'ikipi III, starting RB for the Warriors has missed the
last 5 games
and Hawai'i has lost 3 of them. Pesefea Fiaseu, Jr., who started one game at RB
last
season as a red-shirt Frosh was wiped out (A la Jon Kauka v. BYU last season) in
a special
teams injury game one, depleting the depth in the Warrior backfield. The
Warriors has to
relie on too many 5-6, 170lb-to5-10, 180lb slashers. When you only have small
backs in the
one-back set and no TEs, they better be able to block. Fiaseu, 255 lbs. and
Keli'ikipi @ 266
lbs. could and also catch passes and run for large gains, A la Chris
Fuamatu-ma'afala, the
NFL'r. Keli'ikipi, who had sugery on his ACL MAY BE ABLE TO play Mele Kelekmaka
Day v.
the Houston-town Cougars. Other injuries were to jr. and sr. Lineman so the
Warriors
ended up with two freshman and one soph on the OL. No wonder 5 guys took turns
playing QB!
2) QBs - Tim Chang missed a test last semister of last school year and hadn't
made it up so he was suspended for game one. Whieldon played and did a good job
as they won. Then Chang was awful v. USC & UNLV & the Warrios were blown
out. That dropped their record to 1-2 to start the year. Se'e Poumele, Chad
Kapanui, a couple of slash-type 'QBs', who are good athletes, played some
important minutes early in the year before Mike Rhode became a legit #3 Qb.
Chang once again threw over 20 INTs. {He may finish his career w/ 100}. Whieldon
won one of two starts but he had 12 TDs and 6 picks. Last year the fans were
howling for Shawn Withy-Allen, who finished with 7 TDs, 3 picks and 261 yards,
4TDs rushing. Chang is being pushed for the Heisman by the University Media
Dept. Good Luck,Timmy. I hope as a sr. you take very snap.
3) The kicking game desintigrated with Justin Ayat, a third year starter, jr.
missing 8 straight XPs and Nolan Miranda taking over. He missed 2 XPs himself.
Jones is splitting the job currently between the two; Nolan on long FGs and XPs
and Justin on kickoffs and short FGs. Another area of concern for next season.
4) With four underclassmen playing in the lineup at 'O'-line, the Warriors had a
lot of hits on their pivots. Last year Withy-Allen had three sacks on him and
Chang only 5. This year, 16 total on 5 QBs. Boise St. was pouring in on Chang
and Whieldon like Bears all over maple syrup. Problems: Derek Fa'avi, 6-0 (not
really!) and 266 is just big enough to get run over every other play; though he
has good leverage and technique. Phil Kauffman and Chad Kahale are jr. third
year reserves who deserved to start! Only jr. Uriah Moenoa and true frosh, Tala
Esera were good this year. Soph Brandon Eaton is better at guard, but a slow
liability at LT. For some reason sr. Shayne Kajioka got benched to the XP units
after being a two year starter and Ryan Santos, a sr. got injured early. No
other lineman stepped forward to contend. Next year's starting five should be
Santos, who should get a medical red-shirt, Kahale, Kauffman, Esera and redshirt
frosh Sam Satele. Switch Fa'avi to kicksnapper and reserve DE or LB.
5) Jones needs to settle on ONE backup QB next season. No more QB shuffles and
'Slashes'.
Mike Rhode, Kainoa Akina or Ryan Stickler should win the job outright.
Keili'ikip should give them the first legit 1,000 yard REAL back since Jones has
been there. No more "RB by committee". Also some of those massive DL
need to be moved to help out the weakened O-line. Kila Kamakawiwo'ole needs to
be put into the lineup somewhere too, and not wasted on special teams, where
Fa'avi and Eaton belong. Frosh WR Jason Rivers shouldn't have been given any
playing time either. He is mistake prone and wilts in big games. He had two
offside penalties v. Boise St. that had Jones hopping mad. BENCH all freshmen! I
would never play any freshman no matter how good they seem. Let 'em take their
lumps on special teams like I used to have to. Jones tries sometimes to play too
many guys. Settle on your top 35 like Jone Madden says and let the rest rot
until someone in front of them gets hurt! Last year's 10-4 was nice but this
year only a Bowl game win will save this season." Moose

"Forget
about 'rainbows' - It's time for 'Opieball'!" By: Rich Keali'i Salzer
June Jones has nobody to blame if this mess fails but himself. 'Forget about
(the) rainbows."Call us Warriors", he said and so it was. I welcomed
the nickname (sort of) change myself.
But Jones system has worked so good the last few years, Jones always ends up
creating a QB controversy. By giving six QBs a year scholarships the cream will
rise to the top and he always ends up with two good-to very, very good QBs by
the season's end. Example: in 2000 after Dan Robinson (who played two seasons in
NFL Europe) graduated, Jared (Red) Flint was supposed to take over. But Lance
Samuseva ended that by landing on Red's right passing shoulder in camp. Exit
Flint for a year (now Red is going into his third year of Arenaball), enter true
freshman Tim Chang, 37-1 at Saint Louis School. Chang gets hurt three games into
his sophmore year, gets a medical red-shirt and enter Nick Rolovich (one year
NFL, one year NFL E, now headed to San Jose, Ar.FL). Last year Tim starts cold,
Jason Whieldon leaves to go home and Shawn Withy-Allen {my favorite!}
tears it up. He forces Jones into a two-QB system. (Withy turned down the Af2
Islanders and will head to camp in CFL next spring)
Now as a red-shirt junior Timmy Chang still hasn't nailed down the number #1 job
fully and on National T.V. he gets pulled and Opie Whieldon goes nuts, running
like Withy-and passing like Rolovich! In the same game! Now Warrior Nation boos
Timmy (which can't make his dad Levi, a sideline spotter feel too good) and
lauds Opie as the guy to close out his career as the torch-bearer. This time I
say, "Forget the rainbows, let Opie-ball reign." As for now I'm off
mister rocket-wrist's bandwagon and on Opie's.
And it's Jones fault. Not that I'm mad at June. It took guts to move Withy ahead
of Opie last year. But Shawn deserved it. He even played reserve RB and special
teams for several years to prep for his senior campaign. Withy closed out last
year with a 200-yard, 2 TD 4th quarter in a one-TD loss to Tulane, who was up on
Hawai'i 26-14 at one point in the then 'ConAgra-Hawai'i Bowl.
June, your system is so Qb friendly I almost want get back in shape to use that
one last year of my eligibility that got burned when Virginia College dropped
their program back when I went back to finish my business degree way back when.
When you play QB in the Run 'n Shot, you find out if a QB has got what it takes
quickly but let me let Tim in on a secret: They don't have any Run 'n Shot in
the NFL anymore. Maybe Tim will play in the CFL (I think a better fit since they
use 12 men across and 4 WR/SBs anyway) or the high-flying 8-man Arena League
which plays in the CFL and NFL off season(s).
There is a lot expected of Tim after setting all the records at Saint Louis
School with the Crusaders. The polynseian and asian communities have seen very
few of their own star in any Pro Leagues at the pivot. The list is short:
Marques Tuiososopo, injury-prone Raider back-up; Former CFL and Arena Leaguer
Brian Ah Yat (four second-string seasons), Joe Paopao, an erratic part-time
starter 12 yrs. in the CFL, George Malau'ulu, a two-yr. Ar.FL'r and the biggest
flop of all, so-called Throwin' Samoan, "Jack Thompson" (where'd he
get that name?). So the expectations are high for Timmy, who I do like. But
June, you made a mistake putting this kid in the lineup as a freshman. And the
minority-lusting Sports Media doesn't help things by screaming from the mountain
tops that this guy is the Hawai'ian/
Chinese/German/Scottish-English John Elway of the NCAAs. Give me a break; his
record is only 21-16 and he only has 8 more career TDs than INTs. Timmy should
have been red- shirted his first year. Than sat for two years behind the
three-headed hydra known as: Flintovich-Allen. If Tim hadn't been pushed into
"he'sgottabetheNCAAsAlltimeleading passer" mania, he'd be able to
handle a little pressure at this level better! Because when he gets to the next
level and starts playing for pay, it's a whole 'nother ball game, whether it's
in Canada, the U S, indoors or out. Then he's playing for keeps.
I doubt my man Opie will get any shots at the next level but Rolovich, Withy and
Red
all helped themselves by learning under you June. You played in the NFL &
CFL and
know how it's done. You have one more year to get the kinks out of Tim's game
before the best U / H QB of alltime graduates. I hope Timmy does get a real shot
at the Heisman next season. I always hope my Warriors do well. But for now, we
in
Warrior Nation have two more games of Opieball. Let's enjoy it while we can. And
leave the rainbows to Manoa Valley! {And just ahead on the horizon - what's that
I see - ? KainoaAkina/Mike Roaddog ball?!} Dick Tomey is smiling
somewhere!!!" Richard "Moose" Salzer, MYKwebWORLD reporter.
