Subject: MLB 1st article of
Spring 2003 Major League Baseball Memorable Dates: By: Moose Salzer
2002 - Anaheim Angels win their first Championship Series in forty-two yr. club
history in their first ever appearance.
2001 - Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners won both rookie-of-the-yr. honors
plus was the leading All-Star vote getter, as the All-Star game was in Seattle
in '01. {This author was coming through the airport to & from Seattle on the
way to Alaska before & after the all-star game}
1998 - Saint Louis Cardinals Mark McGuire & Chicago Cubs Sammy Sosa battle
to break Roger Maris 1961 home runs in a season mark.
1995 - Cal Ripkin, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles breaks Lou Gehrig's consecutive
games played record w/ number 2131.
1994 - There is no Championship Series due to player lock out by owners during
strike.
1993 - Joe Carter of the Toronto Blue Jays hits Championship Series- winning
walk-off home run in game six of series v. Philadelphia Phillies
1992 - Toronto Blue Jays become the 1st Canadian based (non-Amer.) team to win
the Championship Series. They would repeat one yr. later!
1991 - Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics breaks Lou Brock's stolen bases
mark. Texas Ranger's Nolan Ryan pitches a record 7th no-hiter v. Toronto.
Minnesota Twins' Jack Morris pitches 10 shutout innings in the Twins win over
the Atlanta Braves.
1988 - Los Angeles Dodgers PH Kirk Gibson limps out of the dug-out to hit a
bottom-of-the-ninth inning homerun v. Oakland's Dennis Eckersley to help his
team win the Championship Series.
1985 - George Brett, who some including this author, think is the Larry Bird of
baseball, leads his improbable Kansas City Royals to the Championship. The day
after the last game of the season the Royals had to play a one game Series w/
California to make the playoffs. Then the Royals had to battle back from being
down 3-1 to both the New York Mets & the Sain Louis Cardinals to win the
series. Brett played all 21 seasons w/ the Kansas City Royals like Bird's 13
consecutive seasons w/
the Boston Celtics. Brett is the only player in MLB history to be in top 10 in
four different categories.
1983 - Baseball players walk off the job in the first of two strikes.
1980 - Kansas City's George Brett bats .3905%, the highest in MLB history since
Ted Williams 4000% in 1941.
1977 - Reggie Jackson hits 3 home runs in 3 consecutive at-bats during Game 6 of
the Championship series.
1975 - Carleton Fisk of the Boston Red Sox hits a bottom-of-the-inning
game-winning home run in the Championship Series
1974 - Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves breaks Babe Ruth's all-time home run
mark.
1972 - The Pittsburgh Pirates Roberto Clemente gets his 3,000th hit in what
becomes his final at-bat.
1961 - New York Yankees batter Roger Maris hits 61 home runs in a season
breaking Babe Ruth's record.
1960- Pittsburgh's Bill Mazerowski hits a bottom-of-the-inning home run in game
7 of the Championship Series.
1956 - Don Larsen pitches the only perfect game in Championship Series history
as the Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers.
1954 - New York Giants outfielder Willie Mays makes "the catch" to
help his team win the Championship Series v. the Cleveland Indians.
1951 - Bobby Thompson's "shot-heard-'round-the-World" helps the New
York Giants win the National League pennant v. the Brooklyn Dodgers.
1941 - Boston's Ted Williams bats .4000% & the Yankess Joe DiMaggio sets the
56 game hitting streak.
1939 - Lou Gehrig, of the New York Yankees retires from MLB & gives the
"luckyest-man-alive" speech.
1938 - Johnny Vander Meer of Cincinnati pitches the only back-to-back no hit
games in MLB history w/ wins v. Boston & Brooklyn.
1934 - Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants strikes out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig,
Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons & Joe Cronin in succession in the all-star game.
1920 - the Boston Red Sox trade/sell the rights to Babe Ruth to the New York
Yankees. Ruth played his AAA ball in Toronto!
1905 - Chris Mathewson throws 3 complete game shut-outs as the New York Giants
beat the Philadelphia Athletics four-to-two to win the MLB Championship.
I'm sure I've missed quite a few but the memory only holds so many bytes of
information... Thanks to mykaussie.com for allowing me to post these American
treasures of Baseball moments that meant much to me growing up.'Moose
