From
Neil Reynolds, Public
Relations Manager, NFL Europe
Galaxy chase Bowl berth; Claymores visit Dragons in key game; Admirals and
Thunder playing for pride
NFL EUROPE'S Week 9 action could see the first team qualify for World Bowl
XI, which takes place in Glasgow, Scotland, on Saturday June 14.
The Frankfurt Galaxy (5-3) can book their flights to Glasgow if they end a
seven-game losing streak against the Rhein Fire (5-3) and win Sunday's
Deutschland Derby at the Waldstadion. The Fire can clinch a World Bowl berth
if they beat Frankfurt and the F.C. Barcelona Dragons (5-3) defeat the
Scottish Claymores (4-4) in Spain 24 hours earlier.
The remaining game in Week 9 features two teams who are already out of the
World Bowl race and playing for personal pride as the Berlin Thunder (2-6)
visits the Amsterdam Admirals (3-5).

Players of the week
Neil Reynolds, Public Relations Manager, NFL Europe
Claymores' Nall honoured following 300-yard day; Touchdown hero Warren
grabs defensive prize.
SCOTTISH Claymores quarterback CRAIG NALL has been named Offensive
Player of the Week following his 300-yard passing display against the
Amsterdam Admirals in Week 8.
The remaining three Players of Week 8 participated in the Rhein
Fire-Berlin Thunder game - Fire defensive end JESSE WARREN, Thunder kicker
J.R. JENKINS and Fire German defensive lineman BASTIAN LANO.
Nall, of the Green Bay Packers, became the first Claymores
quarterback since Dameyune Craig on June 13, 1999, to throw for 300 yards in
a game when he completed 22 of 31 attempts for 313 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0
interceptions. That performance saw Nall post a 135.6 quarterback rating and
helped Scotland stay in the World Bowl hunt with a 31-20 road victory over
the Admirals.
Claymores head coach GENE DAHLQUIST said: "Craig raised the bar for
himself with that performance against the Admirals on Saturday night."
Warren was named Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded 2
tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery for a touchdown during Rhein's 28-21
defeat of the Berlin Thunder.
The 6-foot-4, 275-pound end scored the game's opening touchdown when
he dived on a Phil Stambaugh fumble in the end zone for an early 7-0 lead.
Warren has recorded 11 tackles and 3 sacks since joining the Fire in
mid-season.
Jenkins, of the Baltimore Ravens, was named NFL Europe's top special
teams performer after he kicked his second four-point field goal of the
season. After landing a 50-yarder in Week 7 against the F.C. Barcelona
Dragons, he nailed a 52-yard kick against Rhein on Sunday and later added a
45-yard field goal.
Lano continued his amazing recovery from a knee injury that forced
him to miss the entire 2002 campaign by recording 2 sacks for 18 yards
against the Thunder. The home-grown star now leads the Fire with 6.5 sacks
this season, ranking second in the league behind Berlin's Lamanzer Williams
(8.0), and has two Player of the Week awards to his name.
Lano is challenging to become the first national player in league
history to end a season leading one of the major statistical categories.
Following his outstanding performances on the field this year, Lano is also
aiming to crack an NFL roster in the near future.
"I really want to make it to an NFL training camp this summer," Lano
explained. "I have spent the past four years learning and becoming a better
player and I see that time as being similar to a college career in the
United States - I now feel I am ready to take a shot at the NFL.
"I was sad not to play for the Fire last year because I was in even
better condition than I am now. But I am putting everything I lost and
missed out on last season into this year. Hopefully, that will result in the
Fire winning World Bowl."

Notes...Berlin, Amsterdam & Scotland out of World Bowl XI race...Amsterdam
last in the Bowl in '95, they are the only team of the six to not win the Bowl
yet...They have been in the league since '95. Berlin now 3 loses in-a-row since
Henry Burris season ending injury.
What an outburst of offensive explosion for the Frankfurt Galaxy as they
hammered a weak F.C. Barcelona team in Spain yesterday, 47-13...As of this
writing Scotland is hammering Amsterdam effectively ending even a mathematical
hope of the Dutchmen to make the NFL Euro Bowl XI, Jun. 14th, 2003 in Glasgow,
Scotland, U.K...The Berlin v. Rhein game should be a barnburner & will be on
T.V. TOMORROW before the Ar.FL 2ND WILDCARD PLAYOFF GAME.

From NFL Europe Media.
The race for places in World Bowl XI at Hampden
Park, Glasgow, on June 14 could be the closest battle in NFL Europe League
history.
With
two weeks to go in the season, four teams remain in the hunt for the
championship game, including three teams bidding for a record fifth appearance
in the big game – and the host team themselves, the Scottish Claymores.
One
team has a shot at clinching a World Bowl berth in Week Nine. Another could also
be in a position to clinch if other results go their way. But if Scotland and
Rhein are victorious this week, it will be the first time in league history that
Week 10 has arrived without either World Bowl contestant having been decided.
Confused?
We hope you won’t be. So to begin with, here is a reminder of the NFL Europe
League’s tiebreaker system.
If
two or more clubs finish with identical won-lost-tied percentage, the following
steps will be taken until a winner is determined:
1.
Head-to-head
(best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the tied clubs).
2.
Best
points differential in games between tied teams
3.
Best
points differential in all games
4.
Best
net touchdowns in games between tied teams
5.
Best
net touchdowns in all games
6.
Coin
toss
NOTE
REGARDING MULTI-TEAM TIEBREAKERS: If, after completion of one of the above
steps, clubs remain tied after third or other clubs have been eliminated from,
or have won, a multi-team tiebreaker, the tiebreaker reverts to Step 1.
Frankfurt
is the team with the clearest shot at clinching a World Bowl berth in Week 9. If
the Galaxy end a seven-game losing streak against the Rhein Fire at the
Waldstadion they will be guaranteed a place in the championship game. (However,
if they lose to the Fire they could find themselves needing not just a win in
Week 10, but other results going their way).
The
Rhein Fire will be in position to clinch a World Bowl with a victory in the
Deutschland Derby next Sunday if the Barcelona Dragons beat the Scottish
Claymores in Spain 24 hours earlier. In other words, a Dragons win against the
Claymores means the winner of the Frankfurt-Rhein game is guaranteed to be the
first team to clinch a World Bowl place.
It
is impossible for both World Bowl contestants to be determined in Week 9.
To
summarize, here is the World Bowl picture in simple forms for each of the teams.
AMSTERDAM
ADMIRALS (3-5): Eliminated
from World Bowl contention and still seeking first championship game appearance
since 1995. Need to win final two games to avoid matching longest streak of
losing seasons in NFLEL history (5 – London/England Monarchs, 1992, 1995-98)
F.C.
BARCELONA DRAGONS (5-3): Need
to win final two games to be certain of World Bowl berth. Can qualify with one
win and combination of other results (see scenarios on following page).
BERLIN
THUNDER (2-6): Eliminated
from World Bowl contention, thus ending bid to become first team to qualify for
three straight championship games. Need to win one more game to avoid posting
worst record of a defending World Bowl champion (London, 2-7-1 in 1992).
FRANKFURT
GALAXY (5-3): Can
clinch a World Bowl berth in Week 9 by beating Rhein Fire. Victory in Week 10
could also clinch World Bowl berth, depending on other results. Can even qualify
with two losses (see scenarios on following page)
RHEIN
FIRE (5-3): Clinches
World Bowl berth with two more wins. Can clinch in Week 9 with win against
Frankfurt and a Scotland loss to Barcelona. Can qualify with one win in final
two games, depending on other results (see scenarios).
SCOTTISH
CLAYMORES (4-4): Can
clinch World Bowl berth by winning final two games, but needs Frankfurt to win
or lose each of their last two games to avoid being in a tie that includes the
Galaxy. Even then, it could depend on points differential against Barcelona.
NOTES
ON POINTS DIFFERENTIAL
Some
ties could be broken by points differential in games between the tied teams.
Here are the results so far in series where points differential could be a
factor.

NOTE:
Frankfurt-Barcelona scores are included because it is possible for Rhein,

in which case points differential in the games involving those three teams would
be decisive.

Week 7 Players of the
Week
From
Neil Reynolds, Public
Relations Manager, NFL Europe
Game-winner Hill wins second weekly award; Thunder star Williams grabs
defensive prize.
FOR the second time in the 2003 NFL Europe League season, Amsterdam
Admirals quarterback SHAUN HILL and Berlin Thunder defensive end LAMANZER
WILLIAMS have picked up Player of the Week awards.
Also winning Player of the Week honors following their exploits in
Week 7 are Frankfurt Galaxy wide receiver ROBERT BAKER and Swedish
linebacker JENS PETTERSSON, of the Scottish Claymores.
Hill - allocated by the Minnesota Vikings - won his second Offensive
Player of the Week award after leading the Admirals to a 27-24 victory over
the Frankfurt Galaxy by throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver
Matthew Hatchette with one second remaining.
Hill completed 25 of 42 attempts for 274 yards and touchdowns of 26
and 5 yards to Hatchette for a quarterback rating of 94.7. With three weeks
of the season still to play, Hill leads NFL Europe in pass attempts (244),
completions (148) and yards (1,470).
The Vikings passer said: "That was a huge win for us in Frankfurt
because it keeps us in the World Bowl race. We have to win every week - one
down, three to go."
Williams, of the Miami Dolphins, won his second Defensive Player of
the Week prize in as many weeks - both coming after outstanding performances
against the F.C. Barcelona Dragons.
A week after recording 5 tackles and 4 sacks against Barcelona in
Spain, Williams grabbed 10 tackles, 2 sacks and forced a fumble during
Berlin's 23-20 loss to the Dragons at Olympic Stadium. Williams leads the
league with 7 sacks this season, 6 coming in the last two games against the
Dragons.
Baker, also of the Miami Dolphins, was named Special Teams Player of
the Week following a breathtaking 91-yard punt return for a touchdown late
in Frankfurt's game with the Admirals.
Trailing 20-17 with two minutes remaining, Baker fielded a punt at
his own 9-yard line, sped upfield but slipped to the ground while making a
cut near midfield. With three Admirals players within a yard of him, Baker
bounced back to his feet before being touched and raced down the right
sideline for a memorable touchdown - the second longest punt return in NFLEL
history.
Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS saw his team overcome Baker's
heroics in the dying seconds and said: "That run just about made me sick.
It
was a great run, I mean a great run. When he slipped down and got back up,
that was fantastic. I'm not sure I was too glad to see it but you can't take
away from it being a great play."
Baker posted 107 punt return yards on the night and also scored on a
4-yard pass from Quinn Gray while catching 2 passes for 23 yards.
The Dolphins receiver said: "Every time I step on the field I try to
make a play and I had a couple of opportunities last week. But I am mainly
concerned about team goals and it was all for nothing as we didn't get the
win. I don't look at stats or keep game balls, I'm only interested in
collecting wins."
Pettersson was named National Player of the Week after recording 2
tackles, 1 special teams tackle, 1 interception and 1 pass defense during
Scotland's 33-0 defeat of the Rhein Fire. His interception of quarterback
Chris Greisen came in the Claymores' end zone with 12 seconds remaining,
preserving just the third shut out in Scotland's history and halted the
Fire's league-leading scoring streak at 86 games (every one they had played
in NFLEL prior to Week 7).

department this weekend w/ WR Mark Lester catching 12 passes for 195 yds., 3 TDs
from Quinn Gray(Jacksonville)...Starting QB James Brown (F/A-Scotland '02/arena
league 3 seasons) nearly passed for 300 yds. himself...
other heroes for the Galaxy included DL Danny Benetka & Darren
Bennett's mate, Werner Hippler (see, I told you coach Doug Graber, when you pass
to Aaron Garcia's mate from Sacramento St., you win!). Former Univ. of Hawai'i
QB Nick Rolovich (2 TDs) continues to play well which should increase his stock
w/ the Broncos & had plenty of help in the Rhein's win over perennial
slumper Amsterdam, the only team never to win a Championship in Europe Pro
Footy; DL Bastian (the beast) Lano had 3.5 tackles & a crucial sack on
Canadian reserve QB, David Priestly on the 3 yd-line to help preserve the win
over the Admirals...

over F.C. Barcelona...Cowboy Jack Bicknell has an all-time high 63 wins but
Barcelona may have hit a brick wall after the 4-1 start...Seriously, Coach Bick
has no starting QB - ONLY 3 THIRD STRINGERS - McCann may start this week, &
you can't win w/out a starter...San Diego found this out in the NFL last
season!...Almost no chance for Myk & Moose to make it Scotland -

German domination of Player
of the Week award; Galaxy, Thunder and
Fire stars win weekly honour
STARS of the three NFL Europe League teams based in Germany -
Frankfurt Galaxy, Berlin Thunder and Rhein Fire - have produced a clean
sweep of the Player of the Week honours following their outstanding efforts
in Week 6 action.
Frankfurt wide receiver MARC LESTER was named Offensive Player of
the Week, while Berlin Thunder defensive end LAMANZER WILLIAMS scooped the
defensive prize. Rhein Fire wideout KENDALL NEWSON has been voted Special
Teams Player of the Week and German defensive end DANIEL BENETKA, of the
Galaxy, is hailed the top national.
Lester - of the Baltimore Ravens - enjoyed a career night in the
Waldstadion as he helped the Galaxy come from behind to record a 33-27
victory over the Scottish Claymores in overtime. He caught 12 passes for 195
yards (both season bests) and scored 3 touchdowns.
Lester scored twice in the fourth quarter on receptions of 6 and 13
yards, and then grabbed the game-winning touchdown from 45 yards out in
overtime to cap a highlight-reel night.
Galaxy head coach DOUG GRABER said: "Marc is a real good football
player and a great kid. The Baltimore Ravens are going to be very pleased
with him and I will be shocked if he doesn't make their roster this year."
Williams - allocated by the Miami Dolphins - recorded 5 tackles,
including 4 sacks, in helping the Thunder to a 24-14 victory over the F.C.
Barcelona Dragons. The 6-foot-4, 280-pounder now leads the NFLEL with 5
sacks.
Newson, also of the Miami Dolphins, earned honours after returning a
kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown during Rhein's 34-27 victory over the
Amsterdam Admirals. Newson gained 244 all-purpose yards (144 returns, 100
receiving) and also scored on a 30-yard reception.
Fire head coach PETE KUHARCHEK said: "Kendall Newson was outstanding
and he played a great game. Our special teams play was excellent. Kendall's
touchdown catch was big for us and his kickoff return was a great play."
Benetka, who has spent the past two summers in NFL training camps
with the Indianapolis Colts (2001) and New England Patriots (2002), won
National Player of the Week honours after recording 3 tackles and a key
interception that proved to be the catalyst for Frankfurt's comeback against
the Claymores.
With the Claymores driving and looking to add to their 21-6 lead in
the third quarter, Benetka intercepted Craig Nall at Frankfurt's 30-yard
line, allowing the Galaxy to go on a scoring march and reduce the arrears to
21-13.
Benetka has been a key figure on Frankfurt's defensive line in 2003,
recording 11 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, 3 pass defenses and a forced
fumble.

SUGABABES, one of the hottest bands on the UK and European music scene, are
to headline the halftime show at World Bowl XI on Saturday, June 14 at
Glasgow's Hampden Park.
The NFLEL announced today that the best-selling and critically-acclaimed
band will take a break from recording their third album to perform at the
finale of the 2003 season, to be broadcast in more than 100 countries around
the world.
NFL Europe Managing Director JIM CONNELLY said: "We are looking forward to
presenting such a major act as part of our World Bowl entertainment package.
Sugababes are one of the most popular and successful bands around and to
have them performing at halftime is an exciting development for fans buying
tickets for the event. Their involvement continues the tradition of
top-class entertainment that has been established around World Bowl."
Sugababes were formed in 1998 and released their first album,
One Touch,
in 2000. They were nominated in three categories
in the prestigious Brit
Awards in 2003 - Best British Group, Best British Album for Angels With
Dirty Faces and Best British Dance Act.
The much-acclaimed Angels With Dirty Faces has spent several months in the
top 40 of the UK album charts since being released in August 2002 and
features the hit singles, Freak Like Me, Round Round, Stronger and Shape.
Looking forward to Sugababes' Hampden Park appearance, band member HEIDI
RANGE said: "We're delighted to be headlining the World Bowl XI half-time
show, especially as it's taking place in Glasgow. Scottish audiences are
among the most enthusiastic in the world."
World Bowl XI will reach more than 200 million television viewers worldwide,
including a live audience watching in the United States on FOX. KEISHA
BUCHANAN said: "I hope fans in Europe, the United States and across the
world enjoy watching from home on television - it's going to be a great
day."
MUTYA BUENA added: "We know World Bowl XI is going to be one of the biggest
sporting events in Europe in June and we're happy to be a part of it."
The appearance by Sugababes follows recent World Bowl performances by other
major bands, including FIVE (World Bowl 2000 in Frankfurt), COOLIO (World
Bowl IX in Amsterdam) and FAITHLESS and STATUS QUO (World Bowl X in
Düsseldorf).
The World Bowl XI entertainment programme will also include a pre-game
tribute to the best of Scottish entertainment, featuring Scottish rock star
FISH, formerly of Marillion. Fish will team up with a full orchestra and a
100-strong pipe band for a special version of the Frankie Miller hit
Caledonia.
Scottish Claymores general manager STEVE LIVINGSTONE said: "World Bowl XI
will be a spectacular event featuring exciting entertainment. By attracting
arguably the UK's biggest current pop act, it gives everyone an idea of how
big this event will be in Glasgow in the week building up to the final and
on the day itself."

NFL Europe Notes...Hey CFL guys who were bashing 'Mad Dog' Henry Burris, what
have you got to say now?...'Hammerin' Hank, the former Sask. Rider QB had a hack
of a day in Berlin's win over Amsterdam Sat...I told anyone who reads this
column every week, Berlin is on it's way back to the Bowl...Never, ever count
out (Re-)Pete Vaas, the best coach in NFL Europe...I love Cowboy Jack Bicknell
but this is gettin' ridiculous...I'm not ready to eat crow yet, 'cause I still
think F.C. is a bad team but that 4-1 mark is for real...so far...
Things rounding into shape for the race to the Bowl (#XI in Scotland)...Doug
Graber doesn't get it...You take Darren Bennett's mate Vern Hippler out of the
offence to use him on Special Teams & you end up w/ a 14-7 loss...Dwayne
Painter looks increasingly puzzled & exasperated w/ Graber's incessant
meddling in w/ His (Painter's) 'O'...I guess what the german media guys said
about Graber is true...He doesn't trust the National Players...
Doug you will only win your 1st Bowl if you let your National guys do their
thing...Hippler caught 30 balls in '99 & Frankfurt crashed Barcelona, 38-24
in the Bowl that yr...Look @ such excellent national players like Danny Benetka,
Ralf Kleinmann, Carlos Rosado, George Heckenbach, Marco Martos, Bastian (the
beast) Lano & Masafumi Kawaguchi...If they play up to their potential, the
team wins & the nth amer. guys don't have to carry the load...Simply as
that...Besides Hippler has been on a Super Bowl team (San Diego) & in the
X-FL, 2 leagues better than NFL E...If he's good enough for the NFL & X-FL
he should be starting on your team...When Frankfurt started out 3-0 Hippler was
playing a lot of offence but when they limited his minutes the last two weeks -
no wins!.
Scotland down to 2 more games to get back in the race for the Bowl. They can
afford no more losses...Whoops, forgot CB/S Samir Hamoudi of Barcelona - he's a
good national player, too...Nick Rolovich continues to play well for Rhein even
though he's splitting the job w/ Chris Griesen, who was Jake Plummer's caddie in
Arizona the last 3 seasons...The paper cards released all 3 of last yr.s pivots,
er, ah actually they traded Plummer to Myk's Broncs...But notice Shanahan spent
a week in Carolina @ Buddy Beuerlein's house to beg him not to retire! More next
week from the best WebT.V./site in the world mykaussie.com" Moose
