"CHAMPIONS
ONCE AGAIN
"
Esk Reporter
The
“Grey Cup champion Edmonton Eskimos”…it has a
nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Well
it does if you are an Eskimo fan!! It
has been 10 long years since the ‘Holy grail’ of Canadian football has
called Edmonton home and while the fans are still celebrating, the team has now
turned its focus to the upcoming season. They
are aiming to be the first team to repeat as champions since the 1996, 1997
Toronto Argonauts. A majority of players from last year will be returning, but
this Eskimo team is definitely going to look different. When a team wins a championship, it is not unusual to lose
players to retirement, free agency and other miscellaneous events.
The Eskimos experienced a little bit of everything when it came to player
movement this off-season, but overall they kept their core players together.
The
Eskimos released four players during the off-season and there were a couple of
surprise names on that list. Rick
Walters was going to be in tough with all of the depth the Eskimos had at
receiver, so the team released him back in March.
The coaches have high hopes for Brock Ralph (an Alberta boy from Raymond)
to make the squad and he has had a good training camp to date.
When asked about Ralph, Maciocia compared him to Montreal’s Ben Cahoon.
That is quite the compliment coming from his coach and in the preseason
game against the Stampeders, you caught a glimpse of what Maciocia was talking
about. With less than three minutes
in the half, Jason Maas found him down the seam between two defenders and he
took the pass and streaked into the endzone.
If you thought the Eskimos receiving corps was good last year, just wait
until this year. The other surprise
name on that list was that of Thomas Haskins.
Haskins had been hoping to get back to football this year after having
surgery to remove a brain tumour last spring, but he could not get medical
clearance from the doctors to play. For
the record, Haskins has not given up the idea of being able to play again, and
he could end up on some roster as early as this fall.
The
biggest loss to the Eskimos this off-season was the departure of Ricky Ray.
After leading his team to the Grey Cup, he took advantage of the
‘option year agreement’ with the NFL to sign with the New York Jets.
This left veteran Jason Maas to compete with sophomore Bart Hendricks for
the starting job. The Eskimos also
had a couple of offensive lineman retire. Bruce
Beaton and Leo Groenewegen decided end their careers on a high note after
winning the Grey Cup. This created
a couple of job openings, but the Eskimos have a number of young prospects to
fill the positions. The two that
have been getting the most work are Glen Carson and Carl Panaro.
Carson was with the Eskimos last year, but a serious injury in Regina
during the preseason, kept him out of action for the entire year.
Panaro, spent a fair bit of time on the roster last year and did get a
number of chances to show what he could do.
The Eskimos receiving core was already the best in the CFL last year and
what does the team go out and do? They
sign Derrell Mitchell after he was released by the Toronto Argonauts.
The addition of Mitchell to an already loaded receiving core is going to
give every defensive coordinator in the league nightmares! Who do you double cover?
Do you dare leave them all in single coverage? It will be interesting to see how the QB’s spread the ball
around in this offense.
The
last remaining hurdle for the players was to survive the final cuts that had to
be made by June 12th. Each
team had to name their 40 man rosters and the Eskimos had a few surprises on
that list.
Released
Demoine
Adams (DL – Import)
Kory Bailey (WR-Import)
A.J. Gass (LB-Import)
Ezra Landry (KR – Import)
Devin Rodger (OL- Non-import)
Sean Spender (LB-Non-import)
Dounia Whitehouse (DB-Non-import)
One
game injured list:
Amar
Sanghera (OL-Non-import)
Harold Nash (DB-Import)
Andrew Nowacki (WR-Non-import)
Albert Reese (DL-Import)
Reggie White (RB-Import)
Antonio Wilson (LB-Import)
By
far, the biggest surprise has to be the release of veteran middle linebacker A.J.
Gass. I am not sure why this move
was made, because Gass’ play and leadership were the main reasons the Eskimo
defense played so well and won the Grey Cup.
Both Gass and Powell had good camps and were considered to be neck and
neck, but his release comes as a surprise none the less.
I believe that it may have something to do with Gass’ two reconstructed
knees. Despite what has
happened, the Eskimos can still activate him or put him on the practice roster. As for Kory Bailey, it appears that the Eskimo receiving
depth was too much for him to overcome and his fate was sealed.
The
one game injured list appears to be a way the Eskimos plan to keep as many
players around as they can to start the season.
The team did the same thing last year and it worked for them in the long
run. This way, they can continue to assess the players that they
have and make any changes that need to be made.
It is going to make for an exciting CFL season…its ‘show time’. Esk

Mooses
Eskimo's CFL Preview - Moose predicts 5th.
5)
Edmonton Eskimos
- (Commonwealth Stadium - only grass field left
in the CFL)
Team has won 12 Grey Cups.
Coach: Tom Higgins. QBs: Jason Maas,
Tommy Dennison
(?) Bart Simpson, er, ah
Hendricks (the poor guys!) Gone from the
two-year-in-a-row
Grey Cup Finalists are:
Ricky Ray and so many others it seem like
the Eskies won't
contend but don't ever
count the City of Champions out (except for
the Trappers!)
Maas reinherits the job he
lost more due to injury two years ago as
opposed to
Ricky Ray clearly beating
him out. Ray was very good in Arenaball
and even bettor
in the CFL. But Mass, when
healthy is a tick away. He threw 21 TDs
in '01 and would
have been even better in
'02 before Keith Smith injury kept HIM out
of the lineup and
opened the way for the
gunslinger Ray fresh from duty in Arena2
League. (His first
Pro game was in Honolulu -
what a tough way to start a career.)
If Maas, the holder, who
had back problems last season opening the
way for NFL /
NFL E reject Hendricks
(maybe they can get Simpson!). Hendricks is
the white
version of Ottawa's
Joseph, so Edmonton could be in serious trouble
(unless Homer
unrestricts Bart Simpson -
or SOME CFL team gets Shawn Withy-Allen
into camp
and off the Islanders
roster) if Maas is out for any length of time.
Back is potentially
the greatest RB of all
time in the Pros, Mike Pringle who almost
single-handedly put my
beloved Stallions in the
'94 & '95 Grey Cups, who needs 1,567 yards
to pass George
Reed, Walt Payton and
Emmitt (Twilight) Smith for the all-time Pro
Football record.
Picking up Michael Jenkins
could be in order since only reliable
Mike Bradley (who broke
some of Tim Tindale's CIS
marks) is still on the roster. The Eskies
should bring back
Withy-Allen's former Univ.
of Hawai'i mate, Keiki Misipeka, who is
tearing it up in
Hawai'i in Arena2 this
spring, who they waived from the practice
squad last year
before game four - the
dreaded 'import' / dopey rule again.
Getting
WR Jason Tucker,
the Grey Cup M.V.P back is
key to giving Mass, who is good at
picking out 2,3,4th
receivers, as many options
as possible. Scott Robinson and Mookie
Mitchell over from
TO. will help too. On defense
getting Kelvin Kinney back, before the
Roughriders
do will help once the
Ar.FL season is over. Former Winnipeg DB
Harold Nash and
Donny Brady form the
nucleus of a good 'D'backfield. The kicking
game is in good
feet and hands as holder
Maas and Fleming should again be as good as
McCallum
of the Riders in the West.
Prediction: 10-7-1, 5th place; playoffs." Moose
