Cup Report! Saskatchewan 23 defeat Winnipeg 19! Kerry Joseph profile! In
studio with Gabriel Morency!" Moose Salzer
Historical
notes.
It was the first time in the 99 year history of the CFL that the Saskatchewan
Roughriders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers played each other in the Grey Cup.
The
Saskatchewan Roughriders won their third Grey Cup in team history to go with
14 losses for the (combined) Saskatchewan/Regina Roughriders. Their record now
in the CFL Championship since they entered in 1910, 3-14.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers lost their 15th all-time Grey Cup. They are now:
10-15. They entered the league in 1930 as the Winnipeg 'Pegs and became the
Blue Bombers in 1936.
QB
Kerry Joseph, who played very averagely in the game (100 yds., rushing, but
only 13 of 34 passing for 101 yds.) now has two Championship rings from Pro
Football himself; he got the first in the 1998 NFL E Bowl with the Rhein Fire
as a reserve S / PR.
Ed
Philion, who played for many years with the Buffalo Bills / Montreal Alouettes
also played on that Rhein Fire team. Poor Milt Stegall, Winnipeg SB will have
to come back for a 14th season next year to compete for another ring. I would
rate the Blue Bombers the favorite right now, if QB Kevin Glenn is fully
recovered from his left arm injury. It would have been a different story for
the Bombers if Glenn, a former Roughrider QB had played. I really don't blame
Ryan Dinwiddie if you consider the lousy game plan the Blue Bombers used in
the final 1:21 of the game.
Think
about it; Dinwiddie throws two great bullet passes and the Blue Bombers have
the ball at the Roughriders side of the 55 yard line and it's second and half
a yard and the Bombers call for Dinwiddie to throw down into the teeth of
the Roughriders GREAT Defense and guess what? Most Outstanding Player, S James
Johnson gets his third INT of the game. Case closed. I mean don't get me
wrong, I was elated that the R'Riders won the game (As twenty-share owner). I
did pick them to lose simply because I didn't believe in Kerry Joseph AS A QB
in a big game. Still don't after that second worst passing performance in Grey
Cup history by a Grey Cup winning QB, 13 of 34 passing. Only Anthony
Calvillo's 11 of 31 in '02 in Edmonton is worse. And the scary thing is
Calvillo got MVP that game! Nonetheless Joseph did do a classy thing by giving
Momma the game ball following the win. It won't get any better for him in the
future than that. Drink one for us Kerry and Congratulations, R'Riders!
Kerry L.
Joseph Career Profile.
Age: 35 (Born 1972), 6'1" 225 lbs., McNeese St U., LA [home school of the
Detroit Pistons Joe Dumars], QB-RB-DB-ST'r-PR. Graduated in 1994. Signed and
cut by the Cincinnati Bengals. Signed in 1995 by the Buffalo Bills and
released. Signed by Washington-NFL and played RB in three preseason games and
released. Signed in 1997 by the NFLE London Monarchs. Played four games at QB
and released in 1998. Signed by the NFLE Rhein Fire and played nickel-back (S)
and PR on the NFLE Champion team and won a World Bowl ring and released.
Signed by the San Francisco 49ers in 1999 and played in fourteen games on ST's
and then released.
Signed by the Seattle Seahawks in 2001 and played in fifteen games in the next
two years, starting one at LB and two at S and released in 2003. Has played in
the CFL as mostly a starting QB with Saskatchewan and Ottawa. Career playoff
record as QB: 3-2. Won second Championship ring with the Saskatchewan
Roughriders in 2007 season in 23-19 Grey Cup win over Winnipeg.
CFL - CIS
Radio Log.
I was in the Sirius Radio Studios last Friday / Saturday a.m. from Toronto
with Host Gabe Morency, Fred, Myk and Chris
(see 'Centre68.com') from
12:30-2
a.m. on Sirius Hardcore Satellite radio talking 07 CFL Grey Cup, CIS
Vanier, Los Angeles Clippers and my Baltimore Grey Cup ring and we made our
Grey Cup pics as well. After being on the air with Gabe for six years now on
various shows in Montreal and Toronto, it was great to do a gig Live in the

Results! Eastern and Western Finals Previews!" Moose Salzer
Eastern Conference Semi-Finals:
Winnipeg 24, Montreal 22
Western Conference Semi-Finals:
Saskatchewan 26, Calgary 24
Eastern Conference Final: Winnipeg Blue Bombers (11-7-1) at Toronto
Argonauts (11-7-0). Game 1 p.m., EST at SkyDome (Rogers Centre).
Players to watch, Winnipeg: WR/SB Milt Stegall, K Troy Westwood, QB, MVP
Candidate '07 Kevin Glenn, OL Dan Goodspeed, OL/DL-ST'r Jon Oosterhuis, RB
Charles Roberts.
Toronto: It all comes down to QB Mike Bishop, the perennially doubted one. If
Bishop runs the table the next two weeks and wins the Argos the Grey Cup he'll
not be going back to the Ar.FL anytime soon. '07 season Most Outstanding
Player Award candidate from the East, Kevin Glenn (70%!), QB-passer must do
what he did last week v. the Alouettes - survive! He's done it all season. No
reason to doubt he'll do it again. Pick: Winnipeg 30, Toronto 22. Sorry Coach
Pinball and Co!
Western
Conference Final: Saskatchewan Roughriders (13-6-0) at Vancouver's B.C. Place,
4 p.m. v. the Defending Grey Cup Champion B.C. Lions (14-3-1). Players to
watch, B.C. Lions: OL Rob Murphy, WR/SB Geroy Simon, SB-TE Jason
Clermont, QB Jarious Jackson (or Buck Pierce? How about Dave Dickenson?
Doesn't matter...), Saskatchewan: RB-ST'r Wes Cates, RB-ST'r , WRs Andy Fantuz,
OB Kerry Joseph. Is there any way to derail the mighty, mighty but QB
injury-prone Leos? Probably no this year. Coach Wally Buono will chase Don
Matthews the rest of his career, which is winding down but they will beat the
upstart Roughriders this weekend - barely. Pick: B.C. Lions 21, Saskatchewan
20, OT." Moose

up by the Green Bay Packers and spent three games in '00 on their practice
squad before being released...Drafted #10 in the X-FL first and only player
allocation draft in the fall of '00. Drafted #3 by Memphis and started 5 games
at QB, 2-3 record. Was third string QB with Eskimos, 2nd string with Scotland
and H. Signed by Calgary Stampeders after the X-FL folded May 10th, '01.
Played 2001-04 with the Stampeders mostly as a starter.
Has played with the Saskatchewan Roughriders since 2005-07 mostly as number 2.
Won Calgary the '01 Grey Cup over favored Winnipeg with Most Outstanding
Player performance of 18 of 35 passing for 309 yds and 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 0
fumbles, 0 sacks. Coming near the end of a very productive team-man career.
Has never complained about status with any team. A Winner!

Back, 39 year old RB Sean Millington!
Sean started his career in 1991 with the old Ottawa Rough Riders and later
along with another Joseph, the FB from Ottawa, went to the B.C. Lions where he
made his bread and butter. Millington came out of retirement several years ago
to go back to Toronto and Pinball Clemons, in the only clear headed thinking
he's exhibited this year, also moved versatile DL Jeff Keeping back to the FB
position and he hasn't played badly there at all with 3 carries and two
catches. He'll start again at FB this week, but don't be surprised to see him
play DL/OL also at #78. Millington's career numbers are at: Rushing: 5,220
yards, Receiving: 213 catches for 2,583 more yards. Career 66 TDs. Welcome
back Sean. Now that gets his gloves out of the studio!
CFL
Historical Marks!
Doug Flutie, British Columbia, Calgary, Toronto, who just became the first
American to be inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in Toronto,
Ontario, [Oct. 25th, 2007] still is the career leader in rushing TDs by a QB
with 13. Kerry Joseph is second with 11.

Week 17 Scores:
Winnipeg 27, Calgary 13

B.C. Lions 37, Edmonton 26
Saskatchewan 38, Hamilton 11.
My opinion as to the
greatest CFL WRs and SBs in the 99 year history of the league:
1) Milt Stegall, Winnipeg
2) Darren Flutie, Hamilton, Edmonton, B.C. Lions
3) Allen Pitts, Calgary
4) Ray Elgaard, Saskatchewan
5) Terry Vaughan, Calgary, Hamilton, Edmonton, Ottawa
Crossover still mathematically alive for Edmonton Eskimos.
Fear not Edmonton Eskimo fans, your crossover playoff possibility still
has wings, so to speak. Montreal must lose one and tie one, or loss both and
Edmonton will allow the CFL Western Conference to have a clean sweep in the
CFL 98th playoffs.
Right now Montreal (7-9-0) is just ahead of the Esks (5-10-1) in the standings
heading into week 18. The 2007 CFL season features a 19 week, 18 game schedule
with two weeks to go to the playoffs. Playoff picture will probably be decided
in one week but it could go two. Edmonton really does need to win out, though
another tie wouldn't kill them. Montreal needs to win one more coupled with an
Edmonton loss to clinch. Wouldn't it be cool for the Eskies to enter the CFL
playoffs as an Eastern Conference team? It would definitely be a first! Good
luck to all nine teams the rest of the way out and here's to a return of the
Ottawa RoughRenegades and bring on the Atlantic Schooners!

From Moose "Profile: Winnipeg
QB Kevin Glenn. Kevin's Glenn's first Pro start was as a Saskatchewan
Roughriders QB on Sept. 2nd, 2001. I know. I was there. It was v. the Winnipeg
Blue Bombers, ironically enough and Saskatchewan lost, 20-18. But Glenn is an
interesting story. He turned down several offers from the Ar.FL when the
Roughriders gave him a tryout. He moved into third among Saskatchewan QBs very
quickly and with the injuries to Keith Smith and Marvin Graves, who was also
an Ar.FL vet, Glenn started 5 games for the Roughriders in '01. He left
following the '04 season and signed as a F/A with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
and has improved every year since.
He almost lost his starting job to current
Chicago Ar.FL'r, lefty Russ "Mickey" Michna, but when Michna signed in both
there home state, Illinois, Glenn has since relaxed and become the best QB
this year in the Eastern Conference. Gone are the days of indecisiveness and
inconsistent performances. This season Glenn is on pace to possibly win the
CFL's Most Outstanding Player award and is completing 71% of his passes. If I
had a vote, I would vote for him as M.V.P. right now." Moose Salzer

"Welcome Back"...to ex-Kansas
City/B.C.Lions QB Casey Printers who last week signed with the Hamilton
Tiger-Cats. Printers basically told the Chiefs to jump in a lake when they
wanted to stash him on the practice squad as their number three QB. The Chiefs
have bombed with ancient Damon Huard and greenie Brodie Croyle at pivot so
far. Serves them and know-nothing Coach Herm Edwards right. To make room for
Casey, the Tiger-Cats traded QB Jason Maas to Montreal. And speaking of the
Alouettes their FB Mike Villimek is out for the year with a knee injury.

Trends - It would be very
unwise for any CFL teams to overlook the Winnipeg Blue Bombers down the
stretch since their Defence and QB Kevin Glenn, who's getting better all the
time have woken up!
In the Eastern Conference: Timmy Chang watch: W-L record lifetime in Pros:
1-3. Stats in the CFL this year: Att(s): 96 - Comp(s): 50 - Yds: 604, 2 TDs, 7
INTs.
Western Conference Player
watch: Marcus Crandell, Saskatchewan QB:
Att(s): 59 - Comp(s): 37 - Pct:% 62.7 - Yds: 493 - 2 TDs - 3 INTs
K. Joseph Rushing: No: 55 -
Yds: 439 - 6 TDs. Each week we'll highlight different players stats, but since
Timmy Chang is one of my homers from Hawai'i I want Super Bowl Wayne and
others back in Oah'u to keep up.
CFL QB Watch: Though K. Joseph and M. Crandell give the Roughriders the
deepest QB Duo in the CFL at the moment, Toronto's Mike Bishop, the perpetual
Ar.FL, offseason CFL'r is back from injury and on fire for the Argos, who may
just yet catch Montreal. Hamilton is in a flux with a not-ready-for-CFL-primetime
T.R. Chang still learning on the run in the great white North. Montreal is
still rolling with a good 1-2 punch in Anthony (50,000 yds.+) Calvillo, who
should be good for a few more years backed by Marcus Brady (no relation to
Tom!). Calgary wonders from week to week which Hank Burris will show up and
B.C. wonders who'll stay healthy. Look for there to be no controversy the rest
of the year for Winnipeg with 70% completer K. Glenn, Montreal, Edmonton,
Toronto if Bishop stays healthy and Calgary since Jason Maas old buddy from
Oregon, Akili Smith (how'd he get a Hawai'ian name?) is just treading water in
the dying embers of his Pro career which the sand has almost run out of the
hourglass on! More cliches next week!

Tomorrow's Games:
Toronto at Timmy Chang's Tiger-Cats, 1 p.m., Monday
Edmonton at Cowboy Jeff's Calgary, 4:15 p.m., Monday
You are now receiving this report from the newest part-owner of the
Saskatchewan Roughriders. I bought 20 shares (the max) on July 28th. I won't
tell you what they charged me in American
dollars, but it wasn't the $5,000 Canadian on the site. So go Riders!
Hawai'i's
Timmy Chang takes over in Hamilton. Former Rhein Fire/Philadelphia
Eagle/Detroit Lion and Arizona Cardinal TC is now the starter in
Steel City, Canada. Chang got promoted to the starting line-up
directly after the Tiger-Cats lost their seventh game of the year last
week. Saying he was thrilled to be starting his third Pro game, and first in
the CFL, a higher league than the NFL E ('AAA') Fire of a year and a half ago,
Chang also offered his 'keep-your-chin-up' to fellow QB Jason Maas, who
frankly has not adapted well to the CFL Eastern Conference after helping the
Edmonton Eskimos to two Grey Cup wins in the West ('05 & '03).
Hamilton Coach Charlie Taaffe said all the right things about Jason as he
relieved him of his starting role following the Ti-Cats 1-7-0 start. Maas, who
has completed 57% of his passes for 6 TDs and 6 INTs, is not being benched
because of his performance. Taaffe said Chang asked him for a chance to start
earlier in the year, adding he's not really interested in going back to the
NFL - at least not yet. "I came here to get my name etched on Earl Grey's
Cup", said TC. "I'm not ready to leave 'O Canada until I do." Timmy, don't
hold your breath, at least not this year. But for now Chang gets to learn
about one of our favorite things in the CFL - Labour Day games tradition. Dumb
Moves, part I.
Tim Chang's starting with Hamilton couldn't have come at a better time as the
Kansas City Chefs really screwed the pooch by insulting former CFL Most
Outstanding Player award winner Casey Printers, who they demoted to third
string this week (see my NFL column below for more on that boner) and asked
him to go down to the practice squad. Screw 'Em was Printers reaction and he
is seeking to come back to the CFL. Blame idiot Coach Herm Edwards, a CFL
player hater supreme who said as NY Jets Coach several years ago about current
and then former Eskimo Ricky Ray, "He's a nice Canadian kid." ?? Uh,
Herm, Ray was born and raised in California. You mean he was a nice CFL QB
didn't you. Oh, and in the off season Edwards got rid of the Chiefs starting
QB Trent Green - another former CFL'r. Hhmmm...I'm starting to see a
pattern here.
Back to Tim Chang, who long-time watchers may have notice isn't wearing his
familiar number 14. It's a retired number with the Tiger-Cats and so he asked
for number 7, the number of his former backup and time-sharer at
Hawai'i, the recently retired Shawn
Withy-Allen. [Played four seasons in Af2] When asked why he was wearing number
7 Chang answered, "for Shawn since he never got a chance to play up
here. He and I split the QB job at Hawai'i in '02." Now that is a class kid.
Take that Herm Edwards! You don't deserve Withy-Allen, Chang, Green, Printers
or Ray.
Dumb move number two: The Stamps are off the hook as the dopey Argos this week
let go the best return man in the league, Bashir Levingston! As I was going to
the Grey Cup 2007 site on the I-net, I pursued through the Argos site to link
over. Periodically I go through all the CFL sites from time to time. I bought
a few items from the Lions and Eskimos today too. I came across one of the
stupidest postings I could ever imagine. Pinball Clemens, who's really
come down in my eyes as a CFL Coach, had this to say: "As I told Bashir in
private, and am saying now in public, I thanked him for his loyalty and the
four-and-a-half years he's given the Argo family."
Say what? What does that tell us? Did he get in trouble with the law? Did he
bad mouth the organization? Does anybody in Canada know something I missed in
the CFL recently? Why didn't they just cut Damon Allen, who's done next to
nothing this year? Has his hangnail still got him on I.R.? They could save
about $200,000 to get rid of the useless Allen but instead they fire a (about
my sources in their organization tell me) $95,000 cdn kick returner, the best
in the league. They also cut recently signed Lubbock Af2 QB Robert Kent from
Lubbock. Are they over the dumb 'Imports' limit? I can't figure that one out.
Why do they still need the always injured Allen if they have Bishop, McMahon
and Rocky Butler at pivot? Why is
Pinball suddenly a 'Pinhead'? So Higgins and the Stamps are off the hook for
now. Best to all the CFL teams this Labour Day weekend!" Moose Salzer

Week 9 Scores:

Calgary dumb for releasing
both Boerighter and Lynem. Marc Boerighter who caught 127 CFL passes for 2,269
yards and 20 TDs to go with his six NFL seasons totals of 49 catches for
699 yds., 17 more NFL TDs catches was waived by the Stampeders along with DLm
Tyler Lynem in two of the dumbest moves in club history which may jeopardize
their Grey Cup attempt. Several fans who e-mail me have called for Coach Tom
Higgins head.
Ditto for slumping QB Hank Burris who I have to defend once again. Burris
plays QB and I admit not always up to his very good potential but he had
nothing to do with Boertighter and Lynem's cuts. The money saving Stamps
'screwed the pooch' (and not Mike Vick's dead ones either!) and are taking a
hell of a gamble with these cost cutting moves. Don't worry though Stamps
fans. They will be picked up soon by some other CFL club.
In other CFL News, as we approach Labour Day. the Montreal Alouettes put SB/K
Dave Stala on I.R. for an indefinite period with a broken foot.

Problems and Injuries for some
CFL clubs, and some good trades so far: Saskatchewan - The trade for Wes Cates
and Rob Lazeo (who went to Calgary - has helped both clubs out well - so far.
Hamilton - Jason Maas, with Timmy Chang, the NCAA's all-time leading passer
breathing down his neck, caused the ex-Edmonton two-time Grey Cup winner to
break out with a bang this past weekend as the Ti-Cats had a season high of 43
points. I still believe, as does Rich that Hamilton will make the playoffs.
Montreal has had some Offensive problems, here and there this year, but QB
Anthony Calvillo has topped 50,000+ yards and could probably go another 3 yrs.
B.C. Lions - The defending
Champ Leos have had QB injury problems but with Buck Pierce, who broke all of
ex-Calgary, N.Y. Giants, Miami and Philadelphia pivot (1974-84), Joe
Pisarcik's records at Mexico St. University, coming back they should keep the
pressure on Saskatchewan in the West. B.C also has Defensive studs like Otis
Floyd out which has caused the team to look very mortal the last few weeks.

Being in the Media Centre in
New Orlean on Saturday at the N.O. Arena for ArenaBowl XXI, I was the only one
who had his ear glued to the CFL, Saskatchewan v. Edmonton. What a blowout. I
am starting to see why Roughriders Coach Kent Austin is using
inconsistent Kerry Joseph at the starter and Marcus Crandell as the number 2.
Yesterday for example Joseph was platooned with just 15 passes (he went 11 for
15) and did mostly handoffs and runs himself. Joseph is a serious running
threat and when not turning over the ball, he can be an effective ball-control
QB. Marcus is the pure passer and I still think has one Grey Cup win left in
him.
Then I still think Kurt Warner
has either one more ArenaBowl or Super Bowl in him too. Winners never quit and
Quitters never win. It's as simple as that. Austin, Crandell and Warner are
winners. Enough said. The Argos and Hamilton will continue to struggle for
awhile.

Former VHSL Coach and CFL player Joe Langston, r.i.p, here in Virginia. Former
I.C. Norcom Football and Track Coach Joe Langston died last week Tuesday at
age 66.5. Langston had been ill for some time. Langston lead the Greyhounds to
the VHSL Div. 5 St. AAA Football Championship with the likes of ex-Norfolk Af2
player Jay Clarke back in 1993. He last played in the CFL for Montreal on
their 1970 Grey Cup Championship team, lead by Coach Sam 'The Rifle' Echeverry
and QB Sonny Wade, the CFL's most underrated QB of all-time. Wade QB'd
Montreal to 5 Grey Cup appearances in the 1970's, winning three.
Most Improved QBs in the last
couple years has to Winnipeg's Kevin Glenn and Calgary's Henry 'Hank' Burris.
Both played very well in their respective teams wins this past weekend. But on
the other side of the coin, as was discussed at 1:30 - 1:45 a.m. with host
Gabriel Morency on the Sports Rage After Hours show, Channel 186, Toronto
Sirius Radio, Damon Allen is through. Don't let that TD-on-the-last-play
Jazz fool ya. Not even in Utah Jazz country.
The Argos I can't figure out.
I agree that 5-yr. NFL vet Mike McMahon should be the starter at pivot since
Mike Bishop is hurt. Rookie CIS WR Brad Smith is the son of former
Commissioner Larry Smith, who is now Montreal G.M./V.P. Toronto is really
slumming at RB with 0that bum J. White (#6) who sucks and I don't know
why RB John Avery, who all but won the Argos that Grey Cup in '04 is still not
active. Is Pinball now a pinhead? Virginia's Charles Roberts was a killer down
the stretch in Montreal with his great running and pass catching. He even
attempts to block at 5'6", 171 lbs. What a player!
New updated CFL passing
stats:
Milestones - Anthony Calvillo now third in CFL history with 52,000+ yds. Danny
McManus and Ron Lancaster still ahead. Toronto LB Mike O'Shea the former
Detroit Lion, Hamilton Tiger-Cat is now in his 15th Pro season and has well
over 1,090 tackles. Third most in CFL history to Alondra Johnson and the great
Willie Pless, who was also a very good short yardage FB/TE. Pless is already
in the CFL Hall of Fame and O'Shea is a few years away from that as well!
Game Balls in the CFL this
week:
1) Kevin Glenn, QB, Winnipeg
2) Henry Burris, QB, Calgary
3) Markus Howell, KR/WR, Calgary
4) Craig Dickenson, Special Teams Coach, Calgary
5) B.C. Lions QB Buck Pierce
Week 5 Picks:
Montreal OVER Toronto (who should keep starting Mike McMahon, who is rusty)
Hamilton <Tie> Winnipeg
Saskatchewan OVER Edmonton
Calgary OVER B.C. Lions.
CFL 99th Season Preview - Calgary (Or
Montreal!) All the Way!" Moose Salzer
"Note some player movements may have happened
since Moose wrote this a couple of week ago." Myk Aussie
1) Calgary Stampeders,
74th year. Won five Grey Cups, played in eight. Coach: Tom Higgins. QBs: Henry
Burris, Akili Smith, Stephan LeFors. Other Key Players: Brett Ralph, WR,
Sandro DeAngelis, K, Wes Lysack, S, Gilles Lezi, FB, Brian Clark, Scott Coe
and Cornie Anthony and Brandi N. Harris of Virginia Beach's friend.
Outlook and look back to last year; Henry Burris may have imploded in the
playoffs to Saskatchewan, whom he used to play for but no way will it happen
again. With a great Receiving corps of 7-yr., NFL vet Marc Boerigter, who left
after this team won it's last Grey Cup, in '01, joined by Nik Lewis, who is
the second best PR in the League after Toronto's Bashir Levingston, - Ryan
Thelwell, Markus Howell, Ken- Yon Rambo and Elijah Thurmon, the Stamps will
lead the Western Conference in passing by default! Not even the Defending
Champ B.C. Lions have a better group of Receivers.
The running game is lead by the Offencive Line of: Cheater Jay McNeil, the
dirtiest player in the league, Jeff Pilon John Comiskey and Derek Armstrong.
The RBs will again be after last year's shocking release of 'Tigerman' Tony
Stallings, Wes Cates, a great backup and special teams player and no worse
than the league's second best, Joffrey Reynolds, who first got his feet wet in
the Pros with that spring 'AAA' league that is no more, NFL Europa
(Frankfurt).
The Defence is lead by the
line, minus the recently retired Sheldon Napastuk, and now without
ex-Baltimore Stallion Demetrius Maxie; Miguel Robede, Keron Williams, Randy
Chevrier (Barcelona, '01). The linebacking corps is the best in the CFL by
far! Brandon Haw, Shannon James, Lysack, who may be the best S in the CFL West
and Walt Spencer, number #46 (Keep that in mind when studying this team's
Defence. The Special Teams has a great couple of returnmen in Cates, who is
also the 'gunner' and Nik Lewis. The K Sandro DeAngelis IS the 'Best in the
West. Period. Getting Jaden Volchoff from Af2 Birmingham for the OL could help
also. Prediction: Only a complete collapse can keep Higgins from winning his
second Grey Cup, in Alberta with his second Pro team. They should win at least
11 or 12 games, but will struggle, as always when they face Saskatchewan in
the playoffs. This time they win, especially if the Roughriders don't have
ex-Calgary Grey Cup magnet Marcus Crandell in the Lineup. 95th Grey Cup Winner
Over Montreal or Hamilton.
2) Montreal Alouettes,
55th season (includes 1994-95 as Baltimore Stallions), Six Grey Cup wins
{Baltimore '95]. G.M. / Coach, ex-Stallion Jim Popp. QBs: Anthony Calvillo
[who just hit 50,000+ career yds, moving into 14th place all-time behind John
Elway of Denver-NFL), Marcus Brady, (Jessie 'The Batchelor/Body' Palmer, the
wimp retired, the quitter!), Eric Crouch.
Other Key players: K Damon Duval, RBs Avon (not Este Lauder!) Cobourne
[Cologne '04] and All-time Great Walt Payton's son Jarrett, Centre Brian Chiu,
Hawai'i's DL Nwerken 'Tony' Akpan, CB Lamont Brightful, SBs Ben Cahoon
and Dave Stala, who can also play K/QB/RB and S Etiene Boulay. Retirements,
retirements, retirements. First RB Eric LaPointe. Then WR Sylvain Girard and
then DL Ed Philion (Two Grey Cups and won NFLE Championship, '98 with Rhein).
Then the spoiled Canadian QB-quitter, Palmer, the wimp. Offence will rally
around Payton (Amsterdam's Champ '05 team MVP) and QB Calvillo, Receiver
Cahoon and Cobourne. If they don't suffer any injuries on that great Offencive
Line (Luke Fritz, Jaden Volchoff, of Af2 Birmingham?, Uzooma Okeke, Paul
Lambert, Scott Flory and Chiu), the running game should dominate the East!
Robert Edwards, FB Mike Villmek and washout Dahrran Diedrick are still around
too. Whoever carries the ball will be blessed by the best Offencive Line in
the East. With the fastest (but injury-prone) WR Girard, another francofone
retired, the depth is thin and Cahoon started to slip last year. An area of
concern.
With big Ed Philion gone
at DL, Sometime TE / Defencive League MVP Anwar Stewart gets help form former
University of Hawai'i Warrior kane basketball player/DE Akpan, born in
Nigeria. The Tackles will be a combination of three players from: Dario
Romero, R-Kal Truluck and Kai Ellis, *missused as an oversized mlb last year.
Other LBs include; Dwayne Taylor, Ryan Lucas* (see above), John Grace, stolen
from Calgary and Andrew Battle, Greg's son. Defencive backs will be: Aging
Davis Sanchez, longtime CFL/NFL vet, Matthew Proulx, Brightful and Pat
Dorvelus. Special Teams consists of the East's best K Duval, go from
56-yds.,and in, P Mike Renuad, KR Cobourne and Ezra Landry, if he's healthy.
It's a gamble for Popp to continue to be both General Manager and Coach and I
don't expect him to do both for too much longer. The East is sort of wide open
this year since Toronto doesn't have a REAL QB yet and surprisingly keeps
benching the great RB John Avery for NFL hasbeens(!). I expect Montreal to win
11 or 12 games and hope they keep everybody healthy. This is a team in
transition but The Don (Matthews) still calls them weekly and continues to get
healthy. Popp will probably give up the Coaching reigns after this season or
as soon as he wins a Grey Cup as Coach. Expect that within a year or two.
3) B.C. Lions, 54th
year. Five Grey Cup wins. Seven Grey Cup appearances. Coach: Wally Buono. QBs:
Dave Dickenson, Buck Pierce, Jarious Jackson. RBs: Ian Smart (also a KR/PR),
Joe Smith, FB Lyle Green. WRs: Tony Simmons, Jason Clermont, Mike Lindstrom,
Geroy Simon, Gilles Colon, Kendrick Jones. Defencie players to watch: DL Aaron
Hunt, Brent Williams, Matt Kirk, LB Ricky Foley. Changes, changes, changes.
But not too many. Most of Wally's cahrges are back for another run at the
title. But without lb/s Carl Kidd, Randy Moss' old buddy from Minnesota, the
Defence lacks that old punch. The release of OL Bobby Singh(in' in the Rain),
who two Grey Cups ('01 with Calgary, last year in Winnipeg with the Lions) a
Super Bowl ring with Saint Louis and an XFL ring, was predicated by the
resigning of 7-yr NFL'r Rob Murphy. Kelly Bates, Sherko Rasouli, Jason Jiminez
and Angus Young (not of AC/DC!) is now the third best unit in the West.
Special Teams is in good shape with K/P Paul McCallum, who finally won his
first Grey Cup last year to go with the Scotland Claymores ring he won in '96
in the NFL 'AAA's. Despite a real good passing attack (Dickenson to Clermont,
Simon, Simmons, et, al) they'll miss the best pair of hands they had; Thelwell,
the ex-Seattle/Minnesota NFL'r. The Special Teams better hope Smart stays
healthy on returns and the coverage could be tightened up. K/P McCallum, who
tied a Grey Cup record last year with six for six on FGs, still has one or two
top years left to contribute to the next B.C. drive to a Grey Cup in '08 or
'09. The only thing that WILL keep the very strong B.C Lions out of the '07
Grey Cup in Toronto will be a lack of depth down the stretch. Three real good
QBs but picking up an extra OLm like Jaden Volchoff may be in order. Coach
Wally Buono now has just passed Marv Levy, his old Montreal Coach from back in
the seventies for 11th place in Pro Football history with 205 wins in a career
[Levy did his in a combines CFL-USFL-NFL]. Predicted Finish: 11-7-0, second in
the CFL West.
4) Saskatchewan
Roughriders, 98th year. Sixteen Grey Cup Appearances, Two wins. Coach:
Kent Austin (former 'Rider Grey Cup winning QB, '89). QBs; Marcus Crandell,
Darian Durant, QB-RB K.Joseph. Other Key players: OLm Mike Abou-Mechrek,
Antonio Hall, Gene Makowsky, Rob O'Day, Rob Lazeo, DL Scott Schultz, Dwan
Epps, Luc Mullinder, Defencive Backs - LBs: Scott Gordon, Mike McCullouch,
Reggie Hunt, K/P Luca Congi, WRs: Yo Murphy, Jason French, Kalil Hill, Craig
Yeast (Ar.FL), Andy Fantuz (best ever in the CIS!)and of course Matt
Dominguez. What's new?: Since the Roy Shivers (dismissed at midseason one yr.
ago) and Coach Danny Barrett (contract not renewed after the Western Final
last year) tag-team was broken up, the Roughriders have taken drastic steps to
get past the Western Conference Finals and get into that elusive Grey Cup.
Like the Los Angeles Clippers, who made the NBA playoffs for the first time
since 1997 last year, the Roughriders haven't been to the Grey Cup that long
either. New Coach Austin, their last Grey Cup QB winner ('89) has brought
solid WRs and OLm into this thin-in-depth team to reinforce for the stretch
run. Replacing RB Kenton Keith (New Mexico, fled the coop for the Super Bowl
Indianapolis Colts) will be the big task. They should move Kerry Joseph there
since he had 1,006 yds., rushing for the late Ottawa RoughRenegades in '05
(r.i.p.).
Joseph will sell this team short as a 'qb', but could be real good in the
backfield with Marcus Crandell, who's also won a Grey Cup like Austin.
Replacing Keith's runs will be FB Chris Szarka, always under used, KR/RB
Dominique Dorsey, Shermar Bracey, Neal Hughes, who can also K and P and Sean
Lucas, unless he stays at S. The Defence is the best in the West with the Pass
Rush of Fred Perry, Mullinder, bullrushes by Schultz (not Chris!) and Harvard
educated Tim Fleiszer. Hunt and McCullouch lead an underrated LB corps who may
be the second best in the West behind Calgary. Congi inherited the K/P chores
when Hughes was kept on Offence and Special Teams coverage. Congi is the most
underrated K/P in the league The KRs by Dorsey will keep Saskatchewan in good
position on the field. Prediction: 10-8-0, third but in the playoffs in the
West. I still can't imagine what Eric (The Red) Tillman, G.M. and Coach Austin
see in Joseph who was slated to the bench last year when Crandell re injured
his knee. Joseph has bad mechanics and can't pick out second, third or fourth
WRs in coverage very well. He's a great runner and deep thrower though. One or
two more games like he had v. B.C last week and he WILL be under the bench
behind the under appreaciated Crandell and then watch this team take off!
10-8-0 would be well good enough for the playoffs again. But only the Grey Cup
will suffice the long suffering fans in this great football city. Crandell
holds the key.
5) Hamilton TigerCats,
99th year. Fifteen Grey Cup wins, tied with Toronto for alltime CFL high.
Coach: Charlie Taaffe. QBs: Jason Maas[two Grey Cup wins with Edmonton in the
West], Timmy Chang (NCAA's alltime leader, U.Hawai'i, second yr. Pro; Rhein
Fire -NFLE, Philly-NFL), Ian 'Rocky' Butler[six yrs. Sask.]. Other Key
Players: WRs: Kwamie Cavill, Rich Alston, Nate Curry, Iaim Fleming (Not James
Bond's creator!) Brock Ralph and ancient Mike Morreale (three Grey Cup
appearances, two wins), LBs Steve Josue, Rob Hitchcock and Agustin Barrenechia.
More later; So the Hamilton TigerCats start another season in the 21st Century
with that eternal hope in their breasts, eh? They'll need it! It would seem
that getting former Montreal Coach Taaffe back from the NCAA's to the Canadian
Pros would seem to close up one problem. But unless Mass, who's somehow lost a
step in two years since coming in a trade that basically gave Edmonton the
2005 Grey Cup win in Vancouver, can get his rhythm back, it could be another
six (or less) win season. Not so fast.
Even though they screwed themselves by letting ex-Ottawa great RB Josh Ranek
fly the coop to Edmonton, they got Jessie Lumsdem back from the idiots in
Washington (NFL) and they still have FBs Kojo Aidoo and Julian Radlein and new
QB Timmy Chang. Chang may be the answer if Maas doeen't get it right by say
the sixth or seventh game. Maas was a great backup/part-time starter with
Ricky Ray in Edmonton and H. Maybe he suffers from terminal 'benchitis', which
effects players that sit too long. Maas is now 31 and it's time to turn the
hounds loose for him. Not to take chances the Tiger-Cats also picked up and
great running QB in underappreciated Rocky Butler from Saskatchewan. Obviously
the front office remembers what Butler did to Hamilton last year when Marcus
Crandell got hurt (again). Butler is 3-0 lifetime in CFL starts spread out
over six yrs., and he's more in tune with the CFL style Offence than Chang,
for now. Offencive Line with Pascal Cheron, Fabio Filice, Jonta Woodard,
Damion Cook and Pete Horgarth better protect all three QBs, as I can see all
three playing some this year. Chang already has three appearances in the
Tiger-Cats first four games. Defensively the Tiger-Cats are deeper in a hole
with several key players ahving flown the coop. Linebacking is the strong
point here.
The Defencive secondary, when healthy is the second best in the CFL East,
behind Toronto. Keep an eye on Sandy Beveridge for a possible Top Canadian
choice. Special Teams will be special with perennial John Agro award candidate
RM Corey Holmes and K Jamie Boreham on duty. Coverage is superb. Prediction:
Even if Taaffe cahnges QBs (more than once?), they should still come in second
in the Eastern Conference and make the playoffs. Toronto is fast fading,
Ottawa still not reactivated and Winnipeg doesn't have a reliable QB since
they stupidly let Russ (Lefty) 'Mikki' Michna, who just threw 5 TDs in the
Arena League American Confernce playoff game in the Ar.FL go, last year. More
on Winnipeg, who won't make the playoffs in a moment. 9-9-0 should get these
guys into the dance but they will be 1st round Eastern playoff road kill.
Welcome back to CFL Charlie!
6) Edmonton Eskimos,
67th year. Thirteen Grey Cup wins, 21 appearances. Coach: Danny Macioca. QBs:
Ricky Ray (four CFL seasons, three Grey Cups, two wins, NFL/Af2 vet also),
Stephan LeFors, Steve Jyles. Other Key Players: RBs Josh Ranek, Mike Bradley,
Ron McClendon, FB-TEs Deitan Dubuc, Matt Bertrand, Mike Maurer ('05 Grey Cup
Top Canadian), WRs Jason Tucker, T.J. Acree, Trevor Gaylor, Rob LeBlanc, Pat
Woodcock (Top Canadian '02 Grey Cup) and SB/KR-PR Tony Tomkins.
Offencive Outlook: Provided Ray is healthy, the skies the limit, if this team
lead by the tri-lingual Macioca would use his Canadian talent better!
Especially the unhappy
Woodcock. Now that Ed Hervey, one of the very best in the CFL has officially
retired after 10 great seasons, there would seem to be and opening. Woodcock
surprisingly did better when unhappy current Tiger-Cat pivot Maas was here. On
Special Teams, Inconsistent K/P Sean Fleming, a one-time Philly Eagle-NFL'r
has cost this team at least seven games in the last three years with blown
kicks. His replacement is already in the future '08 CIS draft! Tomkins will
again be the best in the West in returns. Now about that Defence...Take it -
pleeze! Adam Braidwood, Thomas Carroll, Jabari Issa and LB A.J. Gass
masquerade as Pass rushers! LBs Steve Marsh, Mike Botterill, Andre Sommersell
try to replace Singor Mobley and J.R. Larose (Injured). Prediction: The
Eskimos HAD the longest streak in North American Pro Sports going for making
the Playoffs, until they missed out last year after 33 consecutive years. They
will restart the streak this year, barely. They are better than either
Winnipeg or Toronto who will both miss the playoffs, but Edmonton will have to
do the crossover thing. 8-10-0 or 8-9-1, sixth in the CFL.
7) Winnipeg Blue Bombers,
77th year. Ten Grey Cup wins in 22 Grey Cup appearances. Coach: Doug Berry.
QBs: Kevin Glenn, Ryan Dinwiddie, Justin Holland. Predicted Finish: Seventh in
CFL, no Playoffs.
8) Toronto Argonauts,
98th year. Fifteen Grey Cup wins. Predicted Finish: Eighth in the CFL, no
playoffs." Moose Salzer

Timmy Chang, formerly the
NCAA's leading all-time passer has signed a two year, $50,000 CDN per year
contract with the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He joins Shawn Withy-Allen, who
also signed with the CFL team last week. Withy-Allen has played the last three
seasons in Af2. Chang has been on and off the rosters of the Philadelphia
Eagles, Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions of the NFL the last two years.
Chang has also plaed in '06 in eight games in the NFL Europa 'AAA's with the
Rhein Fire.
In 2002 when the University of
Hawai'i was ranked #24 in the NCAA's, Withy-Allen, who laed the team in
rushing, and Chang shared the Quarter Backing duties for the Warriors. They
combined for 5,232 yds., 30 TDs and 300 yds., 5 TDs rushing.
CFL's 17th all-time Commissioner coming@
Myk called me to ask what I knew about Rick Burton, among other things after
he and I were both on Morency's Sportsrage show, last Friday night / Saturday
Morning, in my new timeslot. Mr. Burton is a big chance to be the named the new
CFL Commissioner soon. Burton and former NBA Cleveland Cavalier Mark Price, J.
Craig Ehlo's old buddy, have been running the NBL - Aussie basketball League,
down under in recent years. Burton's not making any money, but the fans of
basketball in Aus love it. Even so, Burton, a very important guy in the Sports Promotions gig, could be just what the sagging CFL needs to be rejuvenated in
it's 99th season.
Robert Wetenhall of Montreal
and David Braley of the British Columbia Lions want the Ottawa Rough Renegades
and Atlantic Schooners
(back) in the League as soon as possible" Moose Salzer
"Moose, Rick

Mar 11 07 "New
Rules in CFL in 2007 Reported! More CFL news!" Moose Salzer
The following Rules have been
amended for the CFL's 99th upcoming season:
1) Rule 4, Section 2, Article 2: Illegal 'snap down', by Offencive Lineman.
Before the ball is centred back to the pivot, or before the Linemen are set in
their stance, they are no longer able to switch from a two-point to
three-point stance to draw the Defencive Linemen offsides. It will result in a
five-yard Offencive Penalty.
2) Rule 5, Section 4: A Kick
from the line of scrimmage by the kicking team, going out of bounds is now
eligible for the kick receiving team to: take a 10-yard penalty v. the kicking
team or spot the ball on first down where the other team has kicked it out of
bounds to.
3) Rule 7, Section 2, Article
3 - Unnecessary Roughness clarification. Any player carrying the ball, who
falls and DOES NOT advance the ball is only needed to be touched down, not
tackled.
4) Rule 4, Section 7: Time In
after a stoppage of the clock by an official, Coach or player. The clock shall

More CFL News:
Former Hawai'i Warrior Defencive End and Hoops star, Tony 'Nuewerkin' Akpan,
has signed a one-year contract to play for the Montreal Aluoettes of the CFL.
After being released by
the Saint Louis Rams recently, Marcus Boerigter has resigned with his first
Pro team, the CFL's Calgary Stampeders. 'Boe' has 158 career catches for 2,719
yards and 27 majors, and one kick return for 44 yards between the Stampeders,
the K.C. Chiefs and Indianapolis in his career. He was released by Green Bay
at the end of training camp in Sept. and just missed getting a
Super Bowl ring with the Colts, as he was
waived when they signed Ricky Proehl in Dec. He also has a new website,

Feb 25 07 "Five
greats to the Canadian Football Hall-of-Fame and Museum, Sept 17th, 2007.
Biographies below! News from Joe Short Mr Stallion!" Moose Salzer
"Greg Battle, Darren Flutie, Dave Knight, Rocco
Romano and Pierre Vercheval to be inducted into Canadian Football Hall of Fame
and Museum!
1) GREG BATTLE: Player. Battle played
for five CFL teams, earning most of his laurels as a linebacker with the
Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who relied heavily on his pass-coverage skills and an
amazing ability to react to the football. An Arizona State product, he began
and ended his 12-year career with Winnipeg, spending 1987-1993 with the Blue
Bombers and returning again from 1997-1998. Battle played 179 regular-season
games, ten playoff games and three Grey Cups. Regular-season statistics
include 766 defensive tackles, 31 interceptions, 26 sacks and 26 fumble
recoveries.
Battle was chosen Western All-Star in 1989, 1990 and 1991, earning CFL
All-Star honors in 1990 and 1991. He was named Winnipeg's outstanding
defensive player in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992 and was chosen the Western
Division outstanding defensive player three times (1989, 1990 and 1991) and
the CFL's top defensive player in 1990 and 1991. Member of CFL-USA in Las
Vegas.
2) DARREN FLUTIE: Player. Flutie played
fifteen years in Pro Football. First, three years with the San Diego Chargers
and (then) Phoenix Cardinals of the NFL. In 1991, Flutie joined the B.C. Lions
midway through the 1991 season making an instant impression in his first eight
CFL games by catching 52 passes for 860 yards and six touchdowns. In four more
seasons with
B.C., Flutie exceeded 1,000 receiving yards three times, a landmark he
surpassed nine times in his 12-year CFL career.
Flutie signed a free-agent pact with the Edmonton Eskimos in 1995. After two
seasons in Edmonton, during which Flutie gained more than 1,300 yards per
season, Flutie spent five seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before retiring
after the 2002 season and becoming an analyst for CBC television. Darren
Flutie played 193 regular-season games, catching 1,011 passes for 14,999 yards
and 68 touchdowns. He won Grey Cups with B.C. in 1994 and Hamilton in 1999.
Flutie was chosen Western All-Star in 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1997, Eastern
All-Star in 1998 and 1999, CFL All-Star in 1996, 1997 and 1999. Darren
Flutie is now an analyst for the TSN
Network on CFL game days.
3) DAVE KNIGHT: Builder. Knight amassed
an All-Time record of 163-79-4 while serving as head coach at Wilfrid Laurier
University (formerly Waterloo Lutheran) from 1966-1983 and the University of
Waterloo from 1988-1997. Knight's 153 regular-season victories were the most
in Canadian university history until 2003, when Larry Haylor surpassed his
record. Dave Knight was chosen as Coach-Of-The-Year in Canadian College
Football (CIAU, later CIS) an unprecedented three times, in 1972, 1979 and
1989. Dave Knight won five (of six) Ontario Championships with WLU in 1966,
1968, 1972, 1973 and 1978 and advanced to the Vanier Cup in 1966, 1968 and
1972.
4) ROCCO ROMANO: Player. Romano spent 10
of his 14 seasons and 175 of his 232 regular-season games with the Calgary
Stampeders. In 1988 Romano was traded to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and then
joined the Toronto Argonauts for five games. He signed as a free agent with
the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1989 and played 17 games. He was then traded to the
B.C. Lions in 1990, who kept him for two seasons before dealing him back to
Calgary for his final nine seasons in the CFL, until 2000.
Romano played 14 postseason games and appeared in the 1992, 1995, 1998 and
1999 Grey Cup games and was on the winning side 2 times (1992 and 1998). Rocco
Romano was chosen as Calgary's outstanding offensive lineman in 1994, 1996 and
1999, earning laurels as West nominee in 1994 and 1996. Romano was a CFL
All-Star guard in 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1996. He switched to tackle at the end
of his career and was named to West and CFL All-Star teams in 1999. Romano was
on the Calgary Stampeders team that was runner-up to Baltimore in the historic
1995 Grey Cup, in Regina, where he once played for the Roughriders.
5) PIERRE VERCHEVAL: Player. Vercheval
won back-to-back Grey Cups with the Toronto Argonauts in 1996 and1997. He also
played in the 1990 Grey Cup with the Edmonton Eskimos and the 2000 Grey Cup
with the Montreal Alouettes, during a 14-year CFL career between 1988-2001.
Vercheval appeared in 212 regular-season games and 13 playoff games. Pierre
was a seven-time divisional All-Star, always as a guard, Western All-Star in
1992, Eastern All-Star in 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999 and, 2000 and Northern
All-Star in 1995.
He won CFL All-Star honors in 1992, 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999 and, 2000 and was
nominated as the team's Outstanding Offensive Lineman with Edmonton in 1992
and Montreal in 2000. He was also named Montreal's Outstanding Canadian Player
in 1999 and the CFL's Outstanding Offensive Lineman in 2000. Vercheval is now
an analyst for the French-language RDS Canadian Pro Sports Network. Thanks to
the CFL Fact and Record Book for the stats.
Good News from Joe Short, Mr. Stallion!:
I talked
with a very good friend of Don Matthews' yesterday and he told me that Don's
health is really good. Tracy Ham called yesterday, also and is enjoying life
watching his two sons grow up real fast. He says he and Grant Carter talk just
about every other day down in Atlanta area. Grant and Nick Subis were two of
my favorite Stallions. Many a CFL quarterback had nightmare dreams of no. 54
in their face so often. So good to hear good news of the old Stallions'
players that brought so much to CFL. Just about 127 days until opening
kick-off to 2007 CFL season....It turns out this guy Spencer, who promises to
give out 'free' (watch your wallet!) DVDs of the Flutie Bros. Band, is a scam
artist.
I never got mine and neither did six or seven others here on my e-Sports
Newsletter list. All I got was one e-mail back claiming one had been sent.
Just a word to the wise. Don't give up any clams to this joker! He's not
really connected with the Fluties.

Jan 27 07 "CFL
- Edmonton Eskimos Update! A Special Salute to Hugh Campbell!" Moose Salzer
Recently retired ex-V.P. of
Football Operations/G.M. and former Head Coach Hugh Campbell retired from the
CFL club in December following a disappointing 6-12-0 season, following a
surprising Grey Cup winning season the year before. But the 6-12-0 season in
'06 was hardly the reason for Campbell's stepping down. Campbell who also
Coached in the NFL with the Houston Oilers and USFL with the Los Angeles
Express had planned to leave in this decade anyway. He felt the time was right
to do so and let somebody else take over the reigns.
In other Eskimos news,
something I failed to mention during the latter part of the year, so shame on
me. Eskimo LB Singor Mobley hit the career 600 solo tackle mark, only the
fifth CFL player (and fourth "Import") to do it. In other recent CFL news,
Saskatchewan RB Kenton Keith (Joe Pisarcik/Buck Pierce's New Mexico St.)
signed a three-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are about to waive bye-bye to both G.M./Interim Coach
Ron Lancaster - for good this time, unless something major breaks his way soon
and released the CFL's all-time leading WR Terry Vaughn. Vaughn says if no CFL
team picks him up, he'll either play one more Pro season in the NFL or Ar.FL
in '07...More to come. Also, look for the CFL's 17th all-time Commissioner to
be announced soon." Moose Salzer

This column could very
well be called 'Rich's Grey Cup '06 Misadventures'. OK, well...where do I
start? Two flights coming up were late, one going back. I got to Grand
Forks, N.D. at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, so naturally I missed the
Parade. I was pretty ragged out so I didn't leave for Winnipeg until 9
a.m. the next morning. I got there about 12:27 Sunday, several hours
before the game began. I was informed that I could not bring my flag in,
so back to the rent-a-car I went to return it. I had to park a mile or so
away, so I got plenty of exercise lately, this weekend! I couldn't find
anybody to scalp a ticket from after that so I helped an old guy around
the side carry some stuff in to Con- sessions area and pulled a Wayne
Lavelle - I snuck in! With all the Media passes I had around my neck, the
old guy told a Winnipeg mountie I was with a TV crew and he believed it!
It turned out to be a very good crowd, for once! I am sure the 1991 game
had a good sized crowd, too, but it was colder than in 1998, when it was
above Celcelus. I looked around for some of the folkes I knew and
couldn't find anybody so I did what Jackie Jacobs told me and made new
Grey Cup friends.
I moved several times during the game but it was a darn good game, except
that the Als couldn't get untracked, Offencively. The first half moved
very quickly and at least the three-QB rotation that B.C. used didn't
inhibit them a bit! Also, since it appears that Buck Pierce is headed
down to the states (Ar.FL / NFL, take your pick) Wally didn't waste any
time in using more than one QB. In '04 he really screwed up, I feel, by
not giving Casey Printers any time. But down the stretch Dave Dickenson /
Buck Pierce / Jarious Jackson all played well and all were hurt to one
degree or another. Two plays really stand out fresh in my mind right now
from the first half; Ian Smart's 35 yd.-TD run and the first FG that Paul
McCallum made...Why McC's FG? Because when he was with the Saskatchewan
Roughriders in the Western Final in '04 he missed that 18-yarder in B.C.
Place that sent the Lions, instead of the Roughriders to the Grey
Cup! You can usually tell what kind of Grey Cup game McC is gonna have by
his first K. Not that making the first one helped him in '97 up in garlic
City (Edmonton) when Doug Flutie and Co. beat Saskatchewan, 43-27.
But back to yesterday's game,
McCallum went 6-6 FGs to tie an alltime CFL Grey Cup record with four other Ks
including Montreal's Don Sweet. (As an aside the alltime CFL Playoff game FG
mark is 7-7 by American Carlos Huerta in the Southern Final, 1995 v. San
Antonio.) Halftime Entertainment: At least Nellie Furtado was much better than
the Brown-eyed Peas, T.E.S. Wright's faux paus of the '05 Grey Cup halftime. A
bit teenie-bopper, but more family friendly.
Dave Dickenson is no longer
0-2 as a Grey Cup starter (he's now 3-2 lifetime, but didn't get a ring on the
p.s. in '97 with Toronto as no. 3). Dickenson, the ex-Charger/Dolphin/Det.
Lion/Seahawk NFL'r is now 1-2 as a Grey Cup starter with B.C. & Calgary. But
poor Als Anthony Calvillo is now 1-4. He has played in five Grey Cups in the
last seven years since taking over for ex-Stallion/Als pivot Tracy Ham. Aside
from Ben Cahoon, who now has 27 Grey Cup catches, second only to Als 'Prince'
Hal Patterson, with 29, none of the other Montreal WRs or SBs did much of
anything. And Anthony, to be honest, was off pretty much all day. Credit Brent
Johnson and that aggressive B.C. Defence! How about Rob Murphy, after 8 yrs.,
in US football (7 NFL / 1 XFL) seasons getting lineman of the Year in the CFL,
eh? I hear that Cal Murphy (no relation) was instrumental in getting him to
come up to B.C., which turned out to be a good move since ex-Hawai'i/UBC star
Bobby Singh (who now has four Pro Football Championship rings; XFL, like
Murphy, in L.A. - thank you Jim Barker, Super Bowl, p.s., mostly with the
Rams, Calgary '98, and now B.C.) was hurt most of the year, as was the
retiring Mo Elewonibi, who was inactive for the game Sunday.
Credit must be due to both the
unseen Don Matthews and Jim Popp for holding this gritty Alouettes team
together after six straight losses during the season. Most players still are
in touch with Matthews and he still is the MAIN guiding light for the Als, who
really won't lose too many people in the offseason. RB-ST'r Eric LaPointe, who
was injured most of the year and maybe fellow francofone WR Sylvain Girard,
who the Als could have REALLY used Sunday, with his speed and maybe one or two
lineman. I have it on good Als sources that IF the Als could have won, Uzooma
Okeke would have called it quits too. It was nice to see semi-new backup
Marcus Brady get a few plays in the Grey Cup, too. Is Nealon Greene going
elsewhere, or back to QB from RB? Stay tuned (unless your a fish)! Other stats
from the B.C. Lions 25-14 win over Montreal; The Als/Stallions are now 6-6 in
Grey Cups (1946-86;94-95 in Baltimore; '96 to present in Montreal).
Jim Popp is 0-1 in Grey Cups and 4-3 lifetime as Als Coach/Interim Coach-G.M.,
reg. season/playoffs/G.C. Wally Buono, the second winningest Coach in CFL
history to 'The Don', is now 4-3 in Grey Cups and has won 4 Grey Cups with
four different starting QBs - Doug Flutie / Jeff Gracia, who finally got some
playing time for the Donovan McNabb-less Eagles in that other outdoor League
yesterday / Marcus Crandell / Dave Dickenson. He has lost Grey Cups with Doug
Flutie (v. Baltimore), Dickenson (both with Calgary in '99 and B.C. in '04) at
QB. Popp is now overall, with Baltimore- Montreal, 2-5 in Grey Cups as G.M.-Interim
Coach.
My Game Balls go to:
1) Kai Ellis, MLB, Montreal - he was incredible and I counted at least 10
tackles in a losing effort in the game.
2) Dave Dickenson, QB, B.C. Lions 237 total yards in the game - including 55
rushing.
3) Paul McCallum, K, B.C. Lions, 6-6 FGs to tie a Grey Cup record.
4) big Joe Smith, RB, who between the CFL & NFL E played in 32 Pro games this
year
5) Damon Duval, K-P, Montreal for a fine all around game!" Moose

Western Final: B.C. Lions
45, Saskatchewan 18.
Eastern Conference Final: Montreal 33, Toronto 24.
In the Western Final Dave Dickenson finally stayed in one piece long enough to
get the Lions back to the Grey Cup and the Roughriders Kerry Joseph may have
cost likable 7th year Coach Danny Barrett his job. Still new G.M. Eric (The
Red) Tillman said following the disappointing blowout loss Sunday that, "We'll
(meaning Tillman and Barrett) will sit down and talk about it." Danny, if it's
any consolation, I now some great moving Co's in and around Regina. Yessiree,
I have some connections - here and there. In the Eastern Final, with his
offseason move to the Ar.FL coming on soon, Toronto Coach Pinball Clemons
wasted little time in benching QB Damon Allen and going for cannon armed Mike
Bishop, six minute into the second half. Still it proved too late. As I stated
last week in this column, he better get Mike Bishop in very quickly. Last week
in the game v. Winnipeg, Pinball almost waited too long.
94th Grey Cup Preview:
B.C. Lions (13-6-0) v. Montreal Alouettes (11-8-0) at Canad Inns Stadium,
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Sunday, November 19th, 2006, 3 p.m., EST. What To Look
For: Not a whole lot of points! This will be a heavyweight title bout and
it'll go 15 rounds! Whoever scores last will surely win it! Joe Smith's
running with Antonio Warren still ailing (A La Marcus Crandell for
Saskatchewan, who could have beaten B.C.!), may be the most overlooked faucet
to the B.C. attack. Too hard luck QBs match up in Montreal's Anthony Calvillo,
who is 1-3 in Grey Cups and
Dave Dickenson, who was on two
GC winners (TO.'97, p.s.) and Calgary (H/2qb'98), but is 0-2 with two teams in
2 Grey Cups since. Dave wants this one really bad and the Als fans will REALLY
be all over former Stallions G.M./now Interim H.Coach Jim Popp, if Calvillo
doesn't win this one! The Als, throughout the Popp/Don Matthews reign have NOT
developed a REAL backup, though Marcus Brady beat out Nealon Greene, who was
moved to backup RB late in the year, and Brady (no relation to Tom!) DID play
pretty well down the stretch. Montreal handled TO. fairly easily last week in
the Big-0. Remember both these teams would be playing in Domed Stadiums if the
Grey Cup was in one of their cities!
They will be out on the prairies and as Joe Short said, the weather will be a
factor. Dave has three very good and two more good WRs to throw to in: Jason
Clermont, Paris Jackson (no relation to Jarious), Ryan Thelwell and of course
Geroy Simon. Expect a real heavy pass-ush from Defencive Coordinator Dave
Ritchie's bunch in B.C.'s LDE Brent Johnson and LB-S Carl Kidd. Whoever plays
FB/RBs for Montreal better keep Calvillo standing upright in this game! With
the Als best and fastest Grey Cup WR Sylvain Girard still out/and or doubtful,
Ben Cahoon, who's looked kinda tired lately might be Calvillo's best target at
OE. Davis Sanchez, Rich Karikari, and of course RDE-LB Anwar Stewart give the
Als a slight edge on Defence. On Special Teams Damon Duval for the Als and
Paul (Vindicated) McCallum of the Lions are evenly matched. Too bad Montreal
doesn't have Ezra Landry in the Lineup returning Ks! My Pick: Since there's
more pressure on Coach Wally Buono and QB Dickenson to win, NOW, I will give a
slight edge to the Lions. My Pick: B.C. Lions 25, Montreal, 24, O.T., the Als
second straight OT loss Grey Cup.
CFL Legend Jackie (Fast
Freight from Miss. St.), "Old Spaghetti Legs" Parker, 74 passed away last week
in Edmonton Hospital after a short serious illness. Parker, born 1932 in
Knoxville, Tennessee, graduated from Mississippi State University in 1954. He
joined the Eskimos that year and helped the team win three straight Grey Cups,
to insure the CFL's [then Canadian Football Council's] first dynasty. Parker
played Offence/Defence/Special Teams, starting in the backfield with FB Normie
(China Clipper) Kwong, the best FB in CFL history and DB/KR/FB Johnny Bright.
New Coach Frank 'Pop' Ivy, who later Coached the AFL's Houston Oilers and New
York Jets, installed a three-back Offencive Backfield, which until then was
unheard of in the CFL! Parker, who wore number #87, played Offencive
single-wing halfback (later the position became QB), Kwong and Bright
played twin-FBs. On the late 2003 CFL Traditions tapes, Calgary legend
Ezzard 'Sugarfoot' Anderson said of Parker, "He was the best that ever
played...(Pro Football)...He played QB/RB/DHB/K/P/KR/PR..." Parker was a
CFL frist team allstar, as a rookie, 1954 through 1961. He was Schenley
Award (Most Outstanding Player), 1957, 1958, 1960.
Parker was traded in 1963 to Toronto who he played four seasons. Parker joined
the B.C. Lions staff in 1967 and when three QBs went down in 1968, Parker came
out of retirement to play pivot for the Lions for three games. In his Pro
career, all 14 yrs. in the CFL, Parker passed for 16, 476 yards and 88 TDs.
Additionally he rushed for 6, 547 yds., Returned kicks for 5,324 more and
punted for another 21,000 yds. Parker also had 44 INTs/Fumble recoveries and
scored 750 pts., on 19 Rouges, 40 FGs and 103 converts. Jackie Parker is a
member of the CFL, Canadian Sports and NCAA Halls of Fame. R.I.P. Jackie

From the Grey Cup email

"ONE MORE GREAT GREY CUP STORY...
Each month leading up to the Grey Cup, one story has been selected and
featured in the 'Magic on the Prairies' newsletter. Congratulations to the
final winner for this great story about the year an American team was destined
to take home the coveted Canadian cup:
My greatest Grey Cup memory entails a little slogan we imports
came up with in B-town (Baltimore) - "Unfinished Business." This was our
slogan in 1995, when the Baltimore Stallions won Canada's cup against the
Calgary Stampeders after a near win in 1994.
The atmosphere that year was unforgettable, during the cold prairie gusts at
Taylor Field in the great city of Regina, Saskatchewan. It got very cold that
fateful night, but our Stallions played like real men SHOULD play in Regina in
November - and guess what? We won! I couldn't believe it. The Baltimore
Stallions went down in history as the only American to win the Grey Cup.
We were treated royally that year in Regina, and I will never forget the
feeling of our Stallions winning that Grey Cup. Today, my fondest Grey Cup
memory is still that 1995 Grey Cup in Regina.
A close second favourite memory is in 1994 - when the Stallions surprised all
by not only going to the playoffs, but by also securing a spot to play the
Grey Cup game in Vancouver versus the hometown B.C. Lions. It didn't matter
that we lost on a great Lui Passaglia 'last seconds' field goal - it was my
second Grey Cup and first Party on the Pacific. And one great football game
I'll never forget.

From Moose "The CFL Western
Conference Finals: The B.C. Lions (12-6-0) v The Saskatchewan Roughriders
(10-9-0) at B.C. Place Stadium [Indoors] The B.C. Lions have three dinged up
pivots and the one that will PROBABLY start is Dave Dickenson. Expect the
Lions to lose Buck Pierce to the NFL or Ar.FL next Jan., or Feb., the rumour
mill says. That would be interesting; Bishop (Toronto) v. Pierce (B.C.)
playing against each other in Hockey-Footy next
spring! But back to the uphill battle the B.C. Lions must face against the
number One Defence left in the CFL playoffs in the ROUGHriders come Sunday at
Jackie Jacobs favorite Football stadium, B.C. Place.
The Lions should have been home for the Grey Cup last year...', "They SHOULD
beat the Roughriders, who only finished the year, 9-9-0..." Yea, yea, right.
The B.C. Lions with their high-powered Offence this weekend are gonna get
beaten to a PHYSICAL pulp by the best Defence left in the CFL Playoffs in week
22. My Pick: Saskatchewan 27, B.C. Lions 19.

Toronto mistakes. A big one made this weekend in Coach Mike Clemons announcing
he's sending 43-going-on-70 yr old Allen back out as starting QB v. the Als?!
Dumb...Bishop, who should be starting anyway, which is why he plays in
two Pro Leagues every year, showed what he could do last weekend. Does Pinball
have a long-term contract? Is he playing for the 95th Grey Cup in TO., next
year? No
matter, the Alouettes will destroy the Argonauts this weekend. No Bishop
miracles unless he gets in waaayyyy earlier in the second half against a
red-hot Als team. My Pick: Montreal 30, Toronto 16." Moose

21 - Playoff Update; Roughriders and Argos Win! " Moose Salzer
CFL
Scotia Bank Eastern Semi-Final Game: Toronto 31, Winnipeg 27. With eight
minutes left in the fourth quarter, Coach Mike Clemons has an epiphany of
sorts. He benched 43-yr. QB Damon Allen, who was having a rough day (as I
predicted he would last week) and went to his bullpen and put in ex-Chicago
ArenaBowl QB2 ('06), Mike Bishop, who just last week signed to play next
spring for the Kansas City Brigade (Ar.FL). Might as well get some more use
from the Kansas Comet, eh? Bishop torn the Blue Bombers up with 3 of 5 passing
for a whopping 110 yds., and 2 TDs as the Argonauts set the fifth date in six
years to play the Montreal Alouettes for the Eastern CFL title, in an exciting
31-27 win. Despite VA's Charles Roberts 179 yds (and a crucial fumble),
Winnipeg seemed in control until 8 minutes left when Bishop, who has the best
arm in any Pro League, took over and went nuts. Now onto the bad News for
TO....
CFL Scotia Bank Western Semi-Finals: Saskatchewan 30, Calgary 21
(Winnipeg Cowboy Jeff owes me a beer!) The storyline is the sllowwww
development of Kerry Joseph (35) into a decent QB. It was glacial [as in the
Titanic...!]. Henry Burris imploded (just as I predicted he could last week,
Myk...) and Coach (for how long?) Tom [formerly 'Terrific'] Higgins, who is
used to real QBs like Ricky Ray, Jason Maas and Danny McManus, who should have
come in in at lest the third quarter. Why didn't he? That's the exact reason
the Stamps got the multi-Grey Cup-ringed one in the offseason; in case of
another Burris meltdown. But in beating Calgary @ McMahon Stadium on the road,
Joseph earned my respect, but in all fairness to injured former Calgary
Grey Cup QB Marcus Crandell, Joseph was benched in favor of Crandell earlier
in the year and Marcus split the job with young Rocky Butler, until he
Crandell got hurt. He will be in uniform this weekend, but third string
the Riders say. Don't bet against the Riders having him start in the
Grey Cup once they dispose of B.C. this weekend....

Thurs,
Nov 2 06 "CFL
Update! Conference Semi-Final Previews West and East!" Moose Salzer
CFL results:
Edmonton 20, Saskatchewan 18
B.C. 30, Winnipeg 24
Montreal 24, Toronto 20
Western Conference Semi-Final: Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-9-0) @ Calgary
Stampeders (10-8-0) at McMahon Stadium this coming weekend. Coaches: Danny
Barrett, 7th year, Saskatchewan all seven seasons with Roughriders. Calgary:
7th year CFL Coach Tom Higgins, 2nd year Calgary, first 5 with Edmonton. Edge:
Slight to Higgins.
QBs: Saskatchewan: Kerry Joseph. Grade: B-, Marcus Crandell, Ian 'Rocky'
Butler,
QBs: Calgary: Henry Burris, Danny McManus,
What to look for: Obviously
it'll be the Roughriders second in the CFL Defence v. Calgary's second in the
CFL Offence. The RBs and OEs power the Stamps 'O'. The LBs and DLm
power the Roughriders 'D'. Expect Scott Schultz and Nate Davis to get a good
push at Burris, who had some decent starting QB years for Saskatchewan in the
past. Question: Does anybody besides stone cold diehard Calgary fans think
Burris BY HIMSELF CAN overpower the underrated Roughriders. Sorry, I don't. I
like Hank, but can't see him taking this team to the Grey Cup (but you can
believe that whoever wins this contest will rep. the West in Grey Cup. No way
B.C. can get by either of these clubs unless they keep one of their three very
good QBs totally healthy. All are dinged up and Schultz and Davis helped this
unit lead the CFL in sacks.
Moose's Pick: Saskatchewan 27,
Calgary 21.
Eastern Conference Semi-Finals: Toronto Argonauts (10-8-0) Winnipeg Blue
Bombers (10-8-0)
Nov. 5th, 2006. Coaches: Doug
Berry, 1st year, Winnipeg. Mike 'Pinball' Clemons, 7th year, Toronto. QBs:
Toronto: take your pick; Damon Allen the Champ, Arena League star Mike Bishop,
who has already signed this week with the Kansas City Brigade for Indoor Pro
Footie next spring or ex-Bomber Spurgon Wynn. Eight games this year (6-2-0
record) Offencive Coordinator Adam Rita (who worked with Allen in Memphis,
with the Mad Dogs and B.C.) USED ALL THREE! Surprisingly it worked. Funny, but
with all that money that the overrated Argos spend on Ricky Williams, the team
is only 2-4-0 with him in the lineup! Can you say "Waste of money?" Look for
RB John Avery to carry a HEAVY load come Sunday. It won't be enough.
This is the time Kevin Glenn's
been waiting for in his six year Pro career.
I saw his very first start, Labour Day, '01 when Winnipeg best his (then)
Saskatchewan Roughriders, 20-18. Glenn would like nothing more than to meet up
v. the Roughriders in the Grey Cup at the Canad Inns Stadium, Sunday, Nov.
19th, 2006. Oh, yea; how will TO. stop Milt Stegall and VA's Charles Roberts?
Answer: they won't! IF Winnipeg gets by Montreal, they'll meet either Calgary
or Saskatchewan in the Grey Cup. They will beat Toronto. I don't think it'll
be that close;
My Pick: Winnipeg 30, Toronto 19." Moose
