'Friends of the CFL, USA' Update By: Moose Salzer
I like Rick Matsumoto as much as anybody, but the Toronto Sun CFL columnist has made some horrendous errors in the Pro Football Weekly paper lately. Last
issue he said "Damon Allen has passed for more yards than any QB in Pro
Football History." Say what? Has he switched to left- handed cigs? Damon
Allen had 56,000+ yards coming into this season. He has played 18 CFL yrs.
But, Rick - Warren Moon passed for 49,000+ yards in the NFL & almost 22,000 in the CFL for a career total of nearly 71,000
yards. Dan Marino has 58,000+ in
the NFL & Doug Flutie has nearly 57,000 in the USFL/CFL/NFL combined! That
means Damon was fourth all-time coming into this season (unless I'm wrong, which
I doubt. I believe Damon will probably move into 2nd place @ the end of this season but he'll never catch Warren Moon!
In the newest issue of Pro Football Weekly Rick said; Ottawa's G.M. Eric 'the
Red' Tillman & coach Joe Paopao have come off like geniuses by letting
starting QB Dan Crowley go & keeping 3 younger players @ the pivot. Rick,
have lost what's left of your mind? Give me a friggin' break!!!!
Ottawa got one good game out of ancient Kerry Joseph, who's two months OLDER
than Dan (the former man) & has looked positively like an ex-NFL DB, which
coincidently he is, the last 3 weeks. They have kept a very good player, Darnell
Kennedy @ #3 & promoted Romaro Miller, a washout w/ Myk's all of a sudden
sorry Vikings & didn't even start in NFL 'AAA' Europe, to #2.
Truth be - the Renegades are in some financial hot water as boy-owner, Brad
Watters lost his shirt on three bad N.L.L. teams in the last four (4) yrs.
(except for my 4 time Champ Toronto Rock) & had to slash the payroll. In the
off season they cut Mark Nohra, a fine RB, who went to Myk's Lions. Then after
2.5 games they bench, then cut their only starting QB! Unfriggin' believable!
And these guys, trying to save the bosses bacon are "geniuses". Rick,
it's
time to retire. You're killin' us. The other news, the
Alouettes are showing us to REALLY be geniuses as they get richer. They just
signed Offensive Lineman Shreko Haji-Rasoul form Univ. of Miami. Guess they
won't need to get ex-Arena Leaguer/CFL Fill-in man Jerry Crafts after all. Can't
wait to back on Gabriel Morency's SportsRage & rant. Stay tuned!" Moose

CFL News of the week.
Congratulations to the Sask. Roughriders who picked
fine QB Henry Burris up from the NFL Chicago Bears. Bears have Kordell Stewart,
Rex Grossman, Chris Chandler & Kent Graham along with his Sask Riders are
probably going to the Grey Cup in Regina this season, so it's a good fit. Way to
go, my choice potential Coach of the year Danny Barrett.
Special thanks to the Football Operations Departments of the B.C. Lions &
Montreal Alouettes for the media guides I requested. Talk about fast service, I
just sent the letters to request them last week. Too bad Calgary & Winnipeg
can't be this fast. ("Moose

Wed, July 23 "A great compliment" Myk Aussie
Hey
Guys,My
name is Andrew Sprague. I am the grandson of the man you identify as the Grey Cup MVP in 40, the year it was contested over two games, Dave Sprague.
I was actually curious to know where you got that information. My family has managed to keep a rather extensive scrap book documenting his career, and I
have yet to find information on that.
Anyway I think you may be the most extensive C-F-L website on the internet.
Not even the official C-F-L, or Hall of Fame sites have as much historical
info as you guys. I'm also quite curious to know if you have any other
information about Dave Sprague. If you do could you point me in that
direction...I'm always curious about my grandfather...probably because he
was gone long before I was born.
Much
Appreciated" Andrew Sprague
From Moose I knew he would be on the Ball here.
"Andrew I know quite a bit about your Granddad - there is a great deal about him in the book "Heroes of the game - A history of the Grey Cup" by Steve Thiele. The CFL-Hall has
it, but I would recommend alibris.com or amazon.com books 1st, for a lower price. If you would like to write me, @ Rich Salzer 3005 Caterpillar Court, Virginia Beach, VA. 23456 I will copy the pgs abut your granddad form the 1940 Grey Cup section if you would prefer. I would also like to recom- mend the video "A Century of Battle" which cronicles the Grey Cup from when my beloved Baltimore Stallions won in '95 all the way back to 1909. (Before 1940's they USE STILL PHOTOs in the vid.)
I can be reached @ 1-757-406-7043 if you have any questions. I am glad when
every so often we get compliments. A lot of people EXPECT us to do the work we do. But it does take lots of research & time & is
truly a labor of love! CFL Hall is fine, but CFL is now kinda beholden to NFL for loaning them some money to help get through the lean yrs. of '96,'97, '98. But I am not beholden to anyone as I'm an independent. Join Myk's mates club. Help spread the word. Help us grow. Thanks again!" Moose Salzer,

Friends of the CFL - U S A Update By: Rich 'Moose' Salzer
Former Baltimore Stallion Mike Pringle, who I think is the greatest RB in
CFL history, has set an all time CFL rushing mark w/ 67 career 100 yd games...I
still say Ottawa pulled a huge blunder by releasing ex-Stallion QB Dan (the
former man) Crowley...The CFL media gave Kerry the Offensive player of the week honors,
but I still say Ottawa is headed for another 4-14-0-2 season...Does the CFL
still count OL pts?...The Arena League did away w/ it it was just
announced...Too NHL-ish I guess
Recent CFL Results:
Toronto 24, (overrated) Winnipeg, (who will make the playoffs by default
since Ottawa threw their season & sanity out the window two weeks ago!) 14
Edmonton 52, Hapless (yes, I admit it now!) Hamilton 15 (ouch!)

CFL News & views...Talked to Ron Rooke of Calgary last week - media all set
up for 1 or 2 games in Stampede City this Sept...Calgary last team I had to
establish media contact with...
Great game in Regina this weekend on our Amer. July 4th...Grey Cup Champs,
Montreal showed why they are just that...Could be a preview of 91st Grey Cup, eh
Ken?...Still not ready to give on those hard-luck Tiger-Cats but Ottawa has
thrown in the towel on themselves w/ stupid release of perfectly good starting
QB, ex-Baltimore Stallion, Dan the man Crowley...
Look for him to get P/U by old buddy Don Matthews & either Montreal,
Edmonton or Calgary all of whom need backup QBs...More Akamai (smart) move would
have been for Stamps to have traded unwanted (by Stamps, not me!) Marcus
Crandell to Ottawa for Dan...Then made Darnell Kennedy the starter as he
obviously fits coach Jim Barker's 'O' better than does Marcus or lefty Feterik...Marcus
would have been perfect in Paopao's off. scheme...
Edmonton trimmed budget by letting #2 QB Keith Smith, the ex-'Rider go last
week, too...Not a wise thing to do as Maas is still hurt & currently
dressing as #3...Only former Frankfurt AAA' QB Bart Hendricks behind outstanding
Ricky Ray, the man...
Dave Dickenson back in the groove w/Myk's Leos in B.C. w/ an impressive outing
v. Pinball's Argos, who picked an overtime loss point...Now on to the Renegades
who seemed to pushed the panick button w/ release of Dapper Dan...Owner
Brad Watters is in serious cash crunch w/ N.L.L. crash of Ottawa Rebel despite
winning it all again w/ Toronto Rock this past spring...Renegades used the lame
excuse of 1-2 start as fodder for releasing their #1 pivot, Crowley, who was
slated to make $110cndK this season\ (if he started all 18 games)...
3 games into the season is too soon or too late to make a radical change like
switching QBs, depending how you look @ it...Behind Dan were Romero Miller, a
two-yr. practice squad/NFL (AAA) Euro guy, ex- of Myk's Vikes & Kerry
Joseph, a former NFL safety who had been out of ALL FOOTBALL for 3 yrs., &
last played Pro QB for London in NFL AAA's in '97!!!!!!I know, I know - they
just got exciting Darnell Kennedy, who I did a profile of on Myk' site w/ rest
of Calgary QBs in May - but he doesn't know the complex offensive system of 'Gades
yet...Plus the FANS of Ottawa ARE UP IN ARMS OVER Dan's release!!!!!
Crowley was by far the player the fans of still new Renegades identified w/ most
(I went to 2 Ottawa games last yr. & bought a Crowley #9 jersey
myself!)...GM Eric (the Red) Tillman & coach Honolulu Joe Paopao really
grabbed the chicken switch & pulled it w/ all their might to get boss off
the hook by saving him about $70,000 cdn. K. by getting rid of the only REAL QB
they had...
Oh, well it's only the playoffs it'll cost them, which should make overrated

My detailed Battle Of
Alberta report:
5.30pm
Eskinator calls the
MYKwebWORLD Bat phone to report that Total-CFLers are meeting at Terry Vaughn's
pub & thus the CFL Footy night begins!
It was another amazing
game as The Stamps led by star QB Marcus Crandell, Wane McGarity, Don Blair
& Albert Connell in offense gained a very good CFL lead for most of the 1st
half. As #93 for the Eskimos Steve Charbonneau dirtily rubbed Larry Phillips head into the turf
Larry got up & had a go at him. Good on ya Lawrence don't take that kind of
rubbish. Wane McGarity the former NFLer was brilliant on punt & kick off
returns & also at receiver as Crandell continually found Wane, Albert
Connell & former BC Lions Don Blair.
As we go to a commercial break I say to me mates "Guys look they have got
Marcus's last name spelt correctly finally on the Safeway advert!"
Ricky Ray struggled early but Terry Vaughn & Ed Hervey were starting to fire
& then wow Jason Tucker takes an absolute screamer in the end zone Touch
Down Eskimo's! We may not see a better catch all year in Nth America former
Rider & now TSN star announcer Glen Suitor reckons & I agree, an
absolute "screamer of a mark" as we call it in Aussie Footy. Jason was
a star all night for the Eskimos running & taking great marks/catches.
Joe
Fleming the Rd 1 CFL Defensive Star for the Stamps has a great play that brings
out his not bro Sean Fleming for a kick & Sean boots a 3 pt goal, 20-18 the
Eskimo's amazing take the lead!
The
Ricky Ray show continues as Ricky throws many great long passes to his star
receivers & ends up with 14 pass completions in a row, Wow! Ricky must have
been thinking this is as much fun as his NCAA days where he had an amazing
number of completions. Mike Pringle is now well
& truly enjoying the great
green natural grass up at
Commonwealth Stadium to end up with 95 great yards while his former team mate
Lawrence Larry Phillips unfortunately drops a difficult pass from Marcus &
the Stamps are just about done with a buck eighty to go in the game.
As me fav song at the moment "Bring Me To Life" by Evanescence played
in the background at Commonwealth Albert Connell took a great grab on Duncan's
on side kick but Oh No it is cm's short of the 10 yards & no good. Eskimos's
Mike Pringle has some good runs & it's all over 34-24. Wow!
More star/big names players were:
Lawrence
"Larry" Phillips as Moose "President Of The CFL, USA" calls
him I believe had a very effective game & I bet although loosing the 1st 2
games against the two Grey Cup 2002 teams Marcus Crandell is very happy to again
have a great running back especially after Kelvin Anderson a legend in Calgary
was quiet for most of 2002.
Marcus after having many nightmares a few weeks ago & although loosing
tonight he will finally be able to sleep again knowing that Connell, Blair
& McGarity will catch what he throws their way. I bet Marcus didn't sleep
for few weeks as the Stamps Bosses traded away his "only consistent go to
guy in 2002" Champ Travis Moore to the Sask Roughie Riders.
In Defense former Rider & NFLer but now a Stampeder George White had a good
game while former San Diego Charger & Al's star Dave Sanchez had a terrible
Offense Interference call against him on Ed Hervey that resulted in a penalty
& then a touchdown by Troy Mills. There was no way Ed could have caught that
so no way should that be interference was the consensus. Dave had a great play
to nearly ruin Ricky Ray's run of completions late in the game.
No it's not one of the "BC Boose Brothers" out there it's "Dorian
Boose" of the Eskimos a Defensive End who had a great game. Dorian another
NFLer now in the CFL played 34 games in 3 seasons for the New York Jets & 10
games for the Washington Redskins & also time at the Houston Texans before
heading to Eskimoland.
My "Total-CFL.com

"Total-CFL.com
CFL MVP Award" I
can't recall seeing a weekly 3,2,1 system going on the major CFL TV networks or
in papers so we are starting it right now.
"CFL
MVP Player of the Year award" is being voted by the very best Total-CFLers
& awarded to the top CFL player at the end of the year. It will be a AFL,
Aussie Football League voting system 3, 2, 1
1 set of votes per game per week but selected by a very knowledgeable panel.
One rule each Total-CFL voter must watch the game very closely to participate in
voting ie Stamps Al's or Stamps Esks I can't vote as I was working, chatting
& Cwoc Hunting
& didn't watch the whole game. But I know Donte Green gets close to a 3 for
Al's vs Esks. Albert Connell, Joe Fleming & Anthony Calvillo were in there
for Stamps vs Al's.
A Massive "Total-CFL Fans Vote Trophy" will be awarded during Grey Cup
week to the CFL player that wins.
Sorry Moose you can't vote until you get up
