Arena 1 League and
why
the 2009 season has been 99% cancelled!

"The
Arena 1 League and the problems!" Rich Moose Salzer
Since the retirement of Commissioner C. David Baker there have been
a lot of wild allegations
about what is wrong with the Ar.FL and why
the 2009 season has been
99% cancelled. The Arena 1 League still
hopes that maybe the
situation can be straightened out and that the
entire '09 season will not
be completely cancelled. The first reorganizational
meeting will be held at
the Columbus Blue Jackets offices by Columbus
Destroyers Owner Mike
Renicci on May 9th and can be heard on conference
call at an 800- number to
be announced in the future. The Columbus Blue
Jackets are co-owners of
the Destroyers.
One:
In 2009 the first of the Arena League pensions were to be paid out.
Commissioner Baker, in his
12th year at the helm of the fastest growing
sport on planet earth,
Indoor Football [there are now 91 teams in seven
different Indoor Football
Leagues at four different levels in the US and
some teams are to be
coming in Canada shortly...]. The Ar.FL was
started in 1987, the same
year as the National (Indoor) Lacrosse League.
Commissioner Baker became
the league's fourth Commissioner on Nov. 2nd,
1996. He announced his
retirement on July 26th, 2008 because it takes
four months to process the
paperwork. He announced it live on ABC TV.
and made it clear to those
of us there in New Orlean, LA that weekend
he was cashing out his
pension - fully. He excepted a $1.5 buyout.
At
55 years of age, the 6'9.5", 387 lb'r., Baker was simply burned out
from flying
100,000-110,000 miles on planes every year to check on
50+ teams and going to all
the Arena League / Af2 functions. With
several NFL team owners
dropping their ArFL teams to the league, which
promptly moved them down
to AF2. The players who played back in
'86-'87 are starting to get their pensions also. Commissioner Baker
is now the agent for his
son, the starting OT of the Atlanta Falcons, too.
Two:
Sponsorship -
With Commissioner Baker's retirement, three of the biggest of the league's
sponsors, Russell
Athletic, the US Army and Spalding footballs Co. also
bowed out for now. They
panicked when the man who could do no wrong
announced his retirement.
Ed Policy is still listed as the 'Acting Commissioner' of the League. The other
sponsors are still sponsoring the Af2
league.
Three:
Ownership Squables / Player Personel Strike on Horizon? -
The last two years, while in New Orlean covering the ArenaBowl, I
noticed something no Pro
Football League should have; different
ownership groups huddling
together without any interaction. The
NFL team owners like Dallas Jerry Jones, Tom Benson were at
one table, The NHL
co-owned teams like Columbus and San Jose
were at another and the
old school independent team owners like
Tampa Bay, Orlando and
Grand Rapids were sitting together. There
was no interaction and you
could cut the tension in the air with a knife!
Three
or four ownership groups like to take the lead at the meetings
and usually the NFL
moneybags try to shut out the others from the
discussion. This should
not be made to sound like the John Elway's,
Mike Ditka's and Ron
Jaworski's are usually quite approachable. As
are the Saber Cats and
Blue Jackets owners. Commissioner Dave Baker
used to be the man to
juggle all the balls in the air to keep any from
hitting the ground.
The
ESPN Factor -
The TV contract calls for the at least 10 teams to play at least a 10 game
schedule. Nine team
ownership groups voted to play a 10 game season
with the playoff first
round and an ArenaBowl Championship. That's one
team too few, so ESPN said
they wouldn't show the games. The league
simply put, needs a new game plan since the Man of 1,000 cures, C.
David Baker is retired.
The league should have been better prepared for
eventual leaving of any
Commissioner over 50. It's the nature of the game.
Weather you are talking
about Indoor Football or Outdoor, it's still Pro
Football and when you have
Pro athletes, Contracts, Pensions, Schedules,
Retirements,
Halls-of-Fame, TV Contract Obligations, Owners of Diverse
background, et, al, you
have to have a plan 'B' behind your plan 'A'.
Arena Football will
survive this and be the better for it. I call it 'growing
pains', which is what
happens to newer Pro Sports leagues.
Four:
Af2 IS NOT Affected by the Layoff of the Arena 1 league -
The Arena League is now Headquartered only in Chicago, which is
where Af2 has always been
Headquartered. The New York Office
they originally got when
NBC had the games is now closed. By consolidating the two offices the league can
now move ahed with expansion
plans for Arena Europa and the Saskatoon team and Buffalo and Toledo
for the Af2 in 2010. Commissioner
Dave Baker announced ArenaBowl
weekend that the Af2 would
be the home of the former NFL Europa,
now Arena Europa.
Af2
will play an all-time high 35 teams in the 2009 season with six or
eight to come in 2010,
including teams in Canada and Europe. Don't
be surprised if the CFL
all has Af2 or Ar.FL teams in the near future.
Ed Policy and CFL's Mark
Cohon are in the works with that right now.
The CFL will be back in
Ottawa in a year or so, with the Atlantic Schooners
and Quebec City Nordiques
to follow. All these cities will have Af2 of Ar.FL
teams as well in the near
future. Af2 is run through Gridiron Enterprises in
Chicago which has been the
Legal arm of Arena Football since 1987.
Af2
has shown a profit for nine straight years. There have been some teams
that have dropped off over the years because the following problems: Other
indoor football leagues
like IFL,NIFL (now defunct), IIFA and AIFA have stolen
a number of former Ar.FL /
Af2 teams over the years by enticing the teams
with lower overhead, et,
al. The problem with this for the players is there is
no pension plan in these
other leagues and the Af2 has to pay a $10,000+
licensing fee to the Ar.FL
every year and the league requires all teams,
weather they are new or
from another league upon joining to pay $350,000+
up front for copywrites
and to be protected by Gridiron Enterprises for legal
fees and to be protected
from piracy. Af2 also has had some bad owners
and several Arena /Af2
player deaths from this physical sport have caused
some bad press. The NFL is
feeling the heat from Indoor Football, make
no mistake about it. The
NFL attendance has decreased for three straight
years since it's has
really almost priced itself out of the reach of the average
Pro
Football fan.
Arena Football International -
The Arena League has played
games in Canada many times over the
years and I am constantly
besieged by many radio and blogradio shows
to do interviews because
of my 7 year association with Gabe Morency
and his Sports Rage
Program which I am on 36-40 times a year. In 1996
there was a preseason game
at the Calgary Flames Arena that drew
15,000+ people. On May
15th, 2007, after the fall of the old Ottawa
Rough Riders of the CFL,
the Florida Bobcats (now the Florida Firecats
of Af2) played the New
Jersey Red Dogs (now the Ar.FL Cleveland
Gladiators) played a
neutral site regular season Ar.FL game before
13,000+ people at the
Corel Centre Arena. For two years the Toronto
Phantoms played at the Air
Canada Centre Arena before averages of
8,000-9,000+ people per
game despite a horrible Thursday night schedule.
When
NBC came into the picture for the Ar.FL broadcasts, they moved the
Ar.FL schedule back to the
old XFL schedule and Rogers dropped the
Phantoms. There have been
teams of Aussies, Japanese and Europeans
who have fielded squads
that have battled Af2 teams in US Af2 preseason
games. Exhibitions in the
Ar.FL in Germany, London, Paris and Mexico
City have also taken place
over the years.
I'll
now make some observations since I have covered Arena Football for
22 years; the Ar.FL and
Af2 COULD merge into one league and just
drop the salaries down to
something normal. The obsession the last
few years by Owners like
John Bon Jovi and Jerry Jones and Tom
Benson to get to that
ArenaBowl at any cost is as bad sometimes
as the obsession to get to
the Super Bowl! Bon Jovi spent $1,000,000,
before taxes for three
years for QB Tony (lefty) Graziani - and then won
the ArenaBowl with Matt
D'Orazio! For $166,000! The Salaries are getting
a bit ridiculous when
three Arena League QBs made $300,000 each last year,
and then NONE of their
teams made the ArenaBowl! Graziani played for
$165,000 last year and was
D'Orazio's backup for all but 4 games! Arena
Football is well
positioned to pass the NFL in a few years, if the NFL continues
on it's destructive
coarse! The Commissioner who took Paul Tagliabue's
spot first cancelled NFL
Europa, which upset thousands of European
fans, then he let Rogers
(who's owner died before he could see the NFL
play in his country,
Canada!) buy the rights to five neutral site Bills' games
in Toronto after the CFL
season is over in '08 and through '12. The games
held in Europe by the NFL
for the last couple of years haven't sold squat for
tickets - most have been
given away! He is taking the Pro
Bowl out of Hawai'i after
2009. Arena
2 is doing well and has
less overhead since the players make $300 a game
and other Indoor Football
league have carved a niche in their markets, albeit
medium and small towns
across the country. Arena Football will be back in
2010."

Ar.FL: New team to unveil in Cleveland with Bernie Kosar as Pres./G.M
and NFL Assistant Coaches with previous Arena playing/coaching experience.
The Las Vegas Gladiators are moving to Cleveland and wil have a Cleveland Browns
flavor with team Pres./G.M. being none other than Super Bowl QB Bernie Kosar,
who won his Super Bowl ring with the Dallas Cowboys. Kosar played 12 years in
the NFL with his native Cleveland, Miami and Dallas. Kosar is best known as the
heir to the Arby's restaurant fortune and as Joe Thiesmann's ex-wife's little
brother.
Kosar is also known as the QB Doug Flutie defeated, at the U. Miami-FL with the
64-yard bomb, 47-45 in the Orange Bowl in Nov. 1984, for Boston College.
Others of note in that game were: Coach Jack Bicknell, who later Coached
Barcelona-Hamburg franchise to 74 wins in 14 NFL E seasons, LB Bill Romanowski,
who is the only NFL LB to have played in five Super Bowls, winning a
record-tying 4, Darren Flutie, until last year the CFL's all-time leading WR and
several others.
Unfortunately the team will still be primarily owned by Mr. Ferraro, who
previously moved the club from New Jersey, where they were the Red Dogs, to Las
Vegas. In Vegas the club has gone through six coaches and had only one winning
season. Good luck to them in Cleveland where they hope to establish a rivalry
with all of a sudden hot Columbus! Now, here's a list of current NFL Coaches and
Assistant Coach's who have previous Arena league playing/coaching experience:
Giants Offensive Coordinator John Hufnagel, New Jersey Red Dogs Head Coach,
1997-98. Eagles A.H. Coach/Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhingweg, Denver
Dynamite QB, 1987. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Ast./QBs, Jay Gruden, Tampa
Bay Storm QB, 1991-96, Orlando Predators QB, 2002-03, Orlando Predators Coach,
1998-2001, 2004-present. Seahawks Offensive Line Coach, Bill Lavaroni, San Jose
Saber Cats, 1995 O-line Coach. Titans Defensive Line Coach, Jim Washburn,
Charlotte Rage, Ast. Coach O-Line 1993." Moose Salzer

Report! Changes in Coaching and F/A Players!" Moose Salzer
The Las Vegas Gladiators signed their fifth Coach in four years, Mike
Wilpolt to a three year deal.
Wilpolt's previous Arena Head Coaching experience came in the 2004 season for
the Indiana Firebirds when he replaced Steve DeBerg who got off to an 0-5 start.
Wilpolt went 5-3-0 down the stretch and then the team went under. Wilpolt is a
former Ar.FL player from Carolina and Las Vegas.
Thanks again to Af2 Media Guru Marc Lestinsky and League executive Jerry Kurz
for the great time at both ArenaBowl XX in New Orlean and ArenaCup 8 in Bossier
City, LA this past summer. I had a blast.
Alabama Steeldogs Coach Ron Selesky who was an NFL player with New Orlean in
1988, has been named to new Grand Rapids Coach Steve Thonn [pronouce it 'Tawn']
staff as Defencive Coordinator with the Rampage. I guess St. Mary's [Canada U.]
OL/DE Jaden Volchoff will have a new Coach to yell at them down there nest year.
Actually I hope Jaden gets pulled up to the Rampage as well. He's one of the
best blockers I've seen in Af2.
Back in the Af2 next year are: the Peoria Pirates, with former Coach Bruce
Cowdry and the Jim Foster, Jr. lead Iowa Barnstormers. Both don't have I-net
sites up yet.
Expect Brian Urlacher's New Mexico Af2 team to be operating and I will be
attending a game next year.
The Oklahoma Yard Dagwz are under new Management. Gone are Barry Switzer and
Horn Chen. In are Gary Reasons and Phil Miller.
Ex-CFL /Ar.FL player and Af2-Ar.FL Coach Danton Barto (Memphis/Las Vegas) is in
now as the new Coach of the Manchester Wolves." Moose Salzer

Tues, Aug 21 07 "It's
all set for Saturday's ArenaCup 8 Showdown in Shreveport-Bossier City! It's
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, American Conference v. Tulsa Talons, National Conference"
Moose Salzer
Af2 Conference Final Results:
American Conference: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 46, Green Bay 43
National Conference: Tulsa 67, Bossier-Shreveport 47
This coming Saturday I will be covering the Tulsa Talons v.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers in ArenaCup 8, the Indoor Pro 'AAA' Championship
of Af2. I know Regina's Danny Massier wishes he could be there but I will get
him a program. I will also get Scott and John back home t-shirts/ and or hats.
But back to the game. After I incorrectly picked the ArenaBowl XXI and NFL's
last Europa Champs wrong, I got both the CFL picks this weekend and Af2
Conference picks right. Halleluyah! Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Tulsa have
identical 17-2-0 marks and have been the cream of the class of '07 all year. Rio
Grande Valley got knocked out with a 16-1-0 mark by Shreveport-Bossier City last
weekend and yesterday Qunicy Carter's Battlewings lost to hard-charging Tulsa,
67-47. Two weeks ago I was in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Af2 Semi-Final playoffs
and the 89th PGAs. I said then that I thought Tulsa was the team to beat and I
still believe it. But not so fast. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers,
once started by the late, greatest ever Colts NFL QB, Johnny Unitas' group have
been a great success story this season. Coach Rich Ingold, one of the original
Ar.FL QBs, along with John Fourcade, Sean Payton, Mike Hohensee, Whit Taylor,
Brendan Folmar, Marty Mornhingweg and Ed Rubbert, is now the all-time
winningest Coach in Af2 history. Ingold, an Indiana native passed Chris Siefried
earlier this year and is now at 60 wins in his Af2 career.
ArenaCup 8 Pick:
Again I am sticking my neck out, but I am going with the newest team to make the
Af2 Championship, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers 63, Tulsa 60, O.T. It'll be the
best ArenaCup yet and the Talons won their last in their only attempt, back
in 2003. Best of luck to both teams! See you Af2 fans in muggy Bossier City /
Shreveport! In other Ar.FL news: The Los Angeles Avengers have re-signed OL Sean
McNamara to a two-year contract through 2009 for about $88,000/per yr." Moose

I arrived in 'The Big Easy',
home of the New Orlean Saints, coached by ex-Arena Bowl QB Sean Payton, on
Thursday. I paid the extra $25 to go down early since I would have to have
waited an extra two hours in the Atlanta airport. Not that I mind Atlanta
airport, definitely better than Chicago or Newark, New Jersey! When I got to the
Hotel on Saint Charles St., right next to where Oliver Stone filmed the movie
JFK in Lafayette Parc, I noticed the 'Welcome Arena Football League' banners and
ArenaBowl XXI placards on the light polls in town. It was a welcome sight. New
Orlean has recovered 80% from that bitch Katrina that torn the town apart back
in August 2005, when I was up in Shreveport, the ex-CFL city covering ArenaCup 6
for MYKwebTV.
I will be on the road covering a lot more footy in the next few weeks as the
seemingly endless 'Economy with Dignity' world sports and footy tour continues.
The ArenaCup is back in Shreveport-Bossier City at the CenturyTel Arena again.
First time in league history that the two biggest Arena football games of the
year are in the same state since AF2 was started in 2000. But back to New Orlean.
The upstart Columbus Destroyers who had knocked off the three top seeds in the
National Conference to get to the Championship. The San Jose Sabercats had won
12 games in a row and could be the next San Antonio Spurs or New England
Patriots. That's what they would become. The festivities leading up to ArenaBowl
XXI were very well planned and the great folkes of New Orleans rolled out the
red-carpet for all the fans, Media (I'm both in this case) and League personnel!
The downtown Sheraton Hotel was the official League Office, Radio Row and
merchandise HQ during the Wednesday-Sunday game-time party after the game was
over. Wednesday - Kick Off to ArenaBowl XXI was held at the Aquarium of the
Americas with the Mascot challenge. The Desperados mascot won the contest.
Thursday was the Aaron Dreamgirls Cheerleaders competition. Utah's cheerleader
won. Also the Georgia Force and Columbus Destroyers players helped finish a
playground at the J.W. Johnson School with League Commissioner C. Dave Baker
cutting the ribbon at the dedication ceremony.
Friday the following events took place: ArenaBowl Kickoff Fanfest at the
Harrah's Casino. Don't worry, there was no gambling in the ballroom where the
league paid for the party. Across town the Arena League Awards show where
Columbus QB Matt Nagy won the award for
Saturday: 10 a.m. Ar.FL players visited the Children's Hospital. 2 p.m. the
annual Arena League combine took place outside the SuperDome on the field. 7
p.m. Live concert outside downtown at Spanish Plaza where the band Stynx
played.
Sunday: 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., after the game Free Entertainment, player and
cheerleader autographs and prizes.
The game: San Jose won, 55-33 with a stifling Defence and caused several as per
lately unusual turnovers by Columbus, who seemed a step too slow in this game.
Game Balls to the following players:
1) Darren Arbet, Coach, San Jose, (2) Cole Magner, WR, Columbus, (3) James Roe,
WR, San Jose, (4) QB Mark Grieb, game M.V.P. and5) Trestin George, KR/WR San
Jose
Other Indoor Footy News: The American Indoor Football Association has emerged
from the ashes of the WIFL, AFIA and the NIFL with 16 teams to begin play in
2008; So far the teams are: Wyoming Cavalry, Fayetteville Guard, Baltimore
Blackbirds, Canton Legends, Carolina Speed, Danville Demolition, Erie Freeze,
Florence Fantoms, Huntington Heroes, Johnstown Rivery'ats, Lakeland
Thunderbolts, Mississippi Mudcats and Pittsburgh Rats.
So Congratulations to the new Ar.FL dynasty, the San Jose Sabercats, who are now
3-0 in ArenaBowls.

From Moose "San Jose enters ArenaBowl XXI in familiar territory; they've been to two
ArenaBowls before winning both (2002 and 2004). But the Columbus Destroyers,
formerly the Buffalo Destroyers are for the first time. San Jose held on to
defeat the pesky Defending Champ Rush, 61-49. Michna, who Winnipeg should have
held onto threw 5 TDs in relief. Columbus, who was up by as many as 20 points
twice(!) beat number two seeded Georgia, 66-56. I would have thought, if
D'Orazio had been healthy San Jose v. Chicago would have been more high scoring.
ArenaBowl XXI Preview: San Jose SaberCats (15-3-0) v. Columbus Destroyers
(10-9-0) at New Orlean, LA. Arena. Time: Sunday, 3 p.m., EST, ABC TV. Mike Golic
and Morency's buddy Mike (Ike) Greenberg on the mic. What to look for: SaberCats
Offence v. the Destroyers Defence. Kinney, Thompson, Riley and Hall, three DLm
and one LB give the Destroyers all the pass rush they need. They have
successfully gotten to Brett Dietz of Tampa, Clint Dolezel of Dallas and Chris
Griesen of Georgia enough to win three tough road games and get to the Vahala of
the Arena Football League.
Oh, and QB Matt Nagy has already lead Georgia there before himself, losing
closely to Elway-Bolen-Kroenke's Colorado Rush on a FG with only seconds left.
Forget about the five game losing streak with six games left in the season and
the 7-9-0 mark that (barely) got Columbus in the dance. These Destroyers are
for real. I know San Jose has more total wins than anybody in the loop since the
clock struck 2000. I know S.J. Coach Darren Arbet has two ArenaBowl rings
already and so does QB Mark Grieb, who completes an unconscionable 74% of his
passes. Kinney, Thompson, Coach Doug Kay, Ast. Coach Cecil Doggette and several
other Columbus personnel have rings from Arena and Af2 Champ teams too. To get
my predicted score: listen to Morency's show Friday night and next week it'll be
here on the Internet too!
Watching the two Conference Ar.FL games from my Hotel bed Saturday while on
assignment in Birmingham Alabama I couldn't help but being caught off guard by
the difference in tone of the two games. In the National Conference game at 1
p.m. EST, Columbus the number six seed handles a seemingly nervous Georgia team
with ease while ex-Winnipeg Blue Bomber pivot, lefty Russ 'Mikki' Michna,
filling in for Defending ArenaBowl Champ QB, Chicago's Matt D'Orazio, Chicago
kept San Jose on it's toes throughout." Moose Salzer

Scores:
Georgia 65, Philadelphia

Chicago 52, Los Angeles 20
San Jose 76, Colorado 67
Columbus 66, Dallas 59
Storyline: The long tall Texas man, with the lip droll stroded into the bar. He
nodded at the barkeep to crack him open a cold one and took his seat near the
back. Three other Caucasian athletes were already there. The tallest one, the
'Polish Prince' from Germany said, "Ve've ben waitin' for ja.", with a slight
accent. Next to him was the greatest American born Hockey player of all-time.
And nearest the 'other QB in town', was the one from Jerry Jones other team. The
6'5" QB from indoor Pro Footy nodded to them and took his seat.
The lineup, l to r: Dirk Nowitzski, Mike Modano, Tony Romo and now Desperados QB Clint
Dolezel. These four Captains from their respective Dallas Pro Sports teams had
one thing in common. During the 2006-07 sports calendar year, had their teams;
the Mavericks, South Stars, Cowboys and Desperados had ALL failed to advance far
in the playoffs, losing to lower seeded opponents. Firs it was the Cowboys, with
their new boy-wonder QB Romo, who blew a routine hold on a chip-shot FG that
allowed the Seattle Seahawks to escape Big D with a 21-20 NFL playoff win.
Modano's Stars got ousted at home in the first round of the NHL playoffs, losing
to the 'Todd Betuzzi-less' Vancouver Canucks. Then the Mavericks got 'cacked' by
the [get this!], Don Nelson-lead Golden St. Warriors, who had last year set the
NBA all-time record for NOT making the playoffs for 13 straight seasons (kinda
the opposite of the Edmonton Eskimos who had made the CFL playoffs 33 STRAIGHT
years in a row). Ouch! But the worst of the four may be the highly regarded
Desperados of the Arena Football League who got trumped AT HOME (!) by the
[double get this] Columbus Destroyers, who came into Big D with a (are you
sitting down?) unenviable record of 8-9.
Call it the 'Big Hurt'. And I'm not talking about Toronto Blue Jays
hitter/fielder Frank Thomas either. Dallas really fell asleep at the wheel but
it was more than just an underrated team getting hot on the road in the playoffs
when it comes down to brass tacks. With Dallas trailing, two minutes to go in
the contest, the biggest error in Arena Football history happened. They took 44
seconds to get their XP unit on the field. Unforgivable.
Give Columbus credit. Three times in the game former Dallas K Pete Martinez of
Columbus hit the iron on the net frame with kicks and twice (IN A ROW!) the
Destroyers recovered the kicks. The first, the kick to start the second half
Columbus took right in for the TD. The next kick was wresteled away from a lazy
(or tired?) Will Pettis, usually the best kick returner in the league this year.
Both times Columbus scored TDs.
Dallas had seemed comfortably ahead at the half with a 38-28 lead. At halftime
also Columbus Coach Doug Kay (U.Hawai'i, '80-'82, Assoc.H. Coach/Defencive
Coordinator) calmly told his charges, "The next half (of the game) is yours to
make what you can out of it." In contrast, Will McClay, the arrogant Dallas
Coach lulled his troops to sleep with the bland, "They tryin' to get where we
already are, an' they ain't gonna do it!!!" [Hhmmm...Ebonics or bad grammar,
anyone?]
Dallas fans can't blame this one on Dolezel anymore than South Stars fans can
blame Modano, or Mavericks fans can blame Nowitzki. But Cowboys fans can SURE
blame Romo, who is probably trying to remember Paris' (she's out of jail isn't
she?) digits from speed dial. Dallas forgot two things that GREAT Arena teams
should never forget; former players ALWAYS look for ways to make the team they
left look bad. Martinez and WR Jason Shelly (who scored two late TDs for the
Destroyers) did that.
The other most important thing to ALWAYS remember about your opponent is if you
have the chance to blow them out and put them away, do it. Too many times over
the years in Pro Football I've seen nice-guy and not-so-nice-guy Coaches let
teams hang around.
Back at the bar, Nowitzki, Modano and Romo left to go about their lives. Their
seasons were over and it was time to move on. Clinton Dolezel's nightmare was
just starting. Many more Buds won't make it go away. Somebody pay this man's tab
and call him a cab!

Playoffs Round One Scores:
Los Angeles 64,
Utah 44
Philadelphia 41, Orlando 26
Colorado 49, Kansas City 42
Columbus 56, Tampa Bay 55
I predicted three of four correctly in week one of the Ar.FL playoffs.
Week Two Match ups.
Columbus at Dallas, What to watch for. Dallas should win and I predict they will
in O.T. But they better not try to blow out upstart Columbus. The Destroyers
barely made the playoffs but finally won on the road defeating an overrated
Tampa Bay team [QB Matt Nagy, who's been to the ArenaBowl before, was
Offensive player of the week]. Dallas would be wise to treat these guys with
respect or they'll be upset victim number two for the Destroyers in the '07
Playoffs. Predicted Finish, Dallas 57, Columbus 56, O.T. Philadelphia at
Georgia, Blowout of the week! Expect Bon Jovi's guys to get killed by the best
team in the League {Remember these guys from Art Blank's team blew out Dallas
earlier this year}. Expect QB Tony (The Graz) Graziani to get hit after and hard
by Georgia Coach Doug Plank's charges! Prediction: Georgia 77, Philadelphia 45
(Ouch! Blue-haired foxx Moxie will be mad at me!)
Los Angeles at Chicago, Fireworks for here for sure! Defending
Champ
Chicago is as riled up as
Majority Owner Mike Ditka was at those NFL-Senate Disability hearing two weeks
ago! Chicago can't let up against hard charging L.A., who blew away Utah at the
Staples Centre, home of new movie producer Elton J. Brand's Clippers! Bob
McMillen v. Josh Jeffries should be as fun as Bobby Sippio v. Kelvin Ingram!
Matt D'Orazio will throw one more TD and maybe a two-point convert at well. As
long as QB Sonny Cumbie doesn't get too many time count violations, L.A
will hang - for three quarters of the game. Chicago 60, Los Angeles 53.
Colorado at San Jose. The
Sabercats just
get no respect. The late Rodney
Dangerfield would like these guys. Like him, they are winners too, despite the
above. QB match up has ex-teammates John Dutton (two ArenaBowl wins) v. Mark
Grieb and his two ArenaBowl rings. Because of Coach Darren Arbet's great staff
and, Grieb and depth, I give a decisive edge to the Sabercats at
home; San Jose 67, Colorado 59.

First Round American and National Conference Playoff Byes: Dallas, who plays

Justin Skaggs, Utah Blaze WR/S passed away at the 'too-early' age of only 28
last Friday in Salt Lake City, Utah as he underwent emergency brain surgery for
a bening tumour. Skaggs who caught 21 passes for 3 TDs early in the year,
collapsed last month at practice after being dizzy and nauseated. He was later
diagnosed as having a tumour on the top of the brain and it was attempted to be
shrunk by lasers, et, al. Skaggs started his Pro career as a WR with Washington
and played there his first two Pro seasons. He caught 1 pass for a 5 yard first
down in 2002 v. Philadelphia.
He played with Washington in '01 & '02. He then left to the NFL E 'AAA's where
he played for Amsterdam in '03. He made the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in '04 but was
allocated back to Amsterdam in the spring of '05. Skaggs was a starting WR on
the NFL E Championship team in Amsterdam in '05 and came directly to the Ar.FL
and Orlando several days after the short 11 game NFL E season was concluded in
June '05. He signed with Utah in early '06, where he played until his recent
death. Skaggs caught 146 passes for 1,733 yds., 26 TDs in seven Pro years with
five teams in three Pro leagues. R.I.P., Justin Skaggs.

From Moose. "What ever happened to ex-Saskatchewan/Calgary WR Travis Moore? Why I saw a
glimpse of him on Monday Night Arenaball--he's now the New Orlean's WR Coach in
Ar.FL! Speaking of New Orlean, how do you lose a six point game with seconds
left in the 1:00 timing clock, in a desperation game for the playoff seedings,
at home? Let Mike Neu Coach your team; Example: Neu's V's score with 1:09
remaining. They replaced injured vet QB Andy Kelly {now with 44,000+ career yds.,
42,500+ in Arena Football!} with a red-hot Steve Bellisari (the former 230 lb.
Rams backup S!). All Steve did was throw an Indoor Pro Football high, for him, 6
TDs and run for two more. With 1:00 remaining, after N.O. fell on a great onside
kick by their new K, the V's throw along pass. That plus the dopey New York pass
interference gives them a first and goal with 40 seconds left. They have one
time out, N.Y. none. First play, Bellisari, from Scott Terna's THE Ohio St.,
runs to the - one! On purpose (maybe he could have gotten in).
The Coach then has him run left, two inches when he could have scored. Third
down with 11 seconds left. NEW ORLEAN calls TIMEOUT! On third down, you guessed
it, Neu tells Bellisari, who tied an all-time Arena League high with 17 carries
in the game, to QB sneak it again! He gets nailed for a yard loss. Then on
fourth down the worst call in Arenaball's history; a fourth QB sneak that is
stopped at the one. In the lat minute of the game, New Orlean's runs four times
for zero yards...I understand you want to run the clock down and N.Y. QB Aaron
Garcia, on his daughter's ninth birthday had been red-hot with 8 TDs, quite
average for this Pro, on the road in the home of ArenaBowl XXI. But you have to
score the TD to tie then the convert, which in Arenaball is no gimme, to win by
one (or two). Bellisari definitely could have scored on at least second down.
The V's set an Arenaball record with four straight carries, unless someone out
there knows the last time in the last 21 yrs., when another Arena League team
has run four straight times (?)! Oh, the Voodoo mascots are called 'Mojo', kind
of a Ralph 'The Dog' type meets the 'Banana Splits' type furry character, and a
guy wearing a top hat, plastic skull and ribs sticking out of his tails named
'Bonehead'. Do you think he could trade places with Coach Mike Neu next week? He
couldn't do any worse!" Moose Salzer

The Tampa Bay Storm have now won three in a row with rookie former Af2 QB Brett
Dietz (3-0-0), who threw 90 TDs for Louisville (Af2) last year, as the starting
QB. The Storm have recaptured their winning ways by holding their last
three opponents to under 40 points, while only themselves averaging 38 points
per contest. It's too early to count on Coach Extraordinaire Tim Marcum (182
wins) team a playoff contender, but with six games remaining and the team now at
4-6-0, and with tow divisional opponents, New Orlean and Austin seemingly going
in the tank, stranger things have happened. Getting DL Nyle Wiren back from I.R.
has helped the Pass Rush the best since Kelvin Kinney left for Columbus several
years ago.
If the playoffs were to go down today, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Georgia,
Orlando, Chicago, Dallas, San Jose, Columbus and Utah would squeeze in. 12 of
the league's 19 teams are due to make it. Three times in the last four years the
league has had 19 teams. Look for Washington to be the league's next entry. I
have it no good sources that the Commish, C. Dave Baker, the perpetually
annotated man, might retire after the league hits 20-22 teams in the next couple
years. The constant travel has worn the 51-year old, 387 lb., Six-foot
Nine-and-a-half incher down. I'll be sorry to see Dave go. And I was sorry that
he didn't replace Paul Tagliabue as the Commish of that other American Pro

American Pro Football Coach to win a Pro league Championship. He first
accomplished this with the awesome 2002 team, that pummeled the rival Arizona
Rattlers, 52-14, the worst drubbing in ArenaBowl history. Arbet has been Arena
League Coach of the year twice and lead the SaberCats to the 2004 ArenaBowl
title as well.
Arbet's career Coaching marks are below:
2007 San Jose +7-3-0
2006 San Jose 11-7-0
2005 San Jose 9-8-0
2004 San Jose 14-5-0

I do like Arena footy but I
seriously think seeing it is indoors and a smaller version of the NFL they
should play without helmets and padding. Then again I haven't played it but I am
still playing the original AFL in Canada which is Australian Rules Football. For
the 06 US Nationals of Aussie Rules Footy MYKwebTV

To me AFL stands for the Australian Football League but I know Arena is growing.
I also know that a accountant guy in the USA wanted $100,000's for afl.com a few
years ago. He should have taken the money that would have been offered to him by
afl.com.au or arenafootball.com people then as no one really need to pay lots of
dollars for a .com name like that now that Google is so good."

Chicago 59, Colorado 48
Tampa Bay 66, Austin 45
Columbus 51, New York 42
Kansas City 53, Philadelphia 41
Grand Rapids 71, Nashville 55
San Jose 56, Arizona 49
Los Angeles 69, Las Vegas 37
Georgia 55, Orlando 34
Dallas 66, Utah 59.
Expect Las Vegas to go all out to save young and talented H.Coach Danton Barto
(former CLF-USA, Ar.FL player)'s job in the following weeks of the season. I
really feel for 'Vegas and Columbus players having to play for two of the
nuttiest owners in the league. The groups in Philly, Arizona, and until
recently, Tampa Bay have just fallen asleep at the wheel. Those three clubs
would be dangerous if they knew what they were doing. I'm kinda sick of the
royal treatment Mr. Livin' On A Prayer is gettin'. Bon Jovi's theme songs kinda
suck too, sorry to say. Maybe if I get to the Big easy this late July '07
to the ArenaBowl XXI, I'll mention something to him in a nice way and help him
out. I especially love those Philly Super fans, especially Moxie, the cutest
woman out there with blue hair. Now if she'd only dump Capt'n Soul!
The Announcers on last's night's Monday night Ar.FL ESPN2 game were a mutley
crew to say the least. I like Merrill Hoge but Mark Jones, who's been inaccurate
for years (check out last year's Hawai'i NCAA Bowl game where QB Colt Brennan
set the NCAA record with 58 TDs passes in a season (14 games for more)). Jones
last night said Denver beat Pittsburgh (now Tampa Bay since '91), 45-15.
Actually it was 45-16, Mark. He also said something that drives me up the wall
about "Levels" of Pro Football. Well, Mark and for the rest of the readers here
they are, correctly for a change: The Ar.FL, CFL and NFL are one level and NFL
Europa and Af2 are the 'AAA's. The way Jones said it, he made it sound as the
NFL is ABOVE the Ar.FL, which of course it is NOT! Let's look more closely; the
NFL has 32 teams that employ 1694 players (32 X 53) to start the season.
Then more with injuries later in the year.
The Ar.FL has 19 teams with 24 per squad + additions for injuries later. The CFL
has 44 X 9 teams (when Ottawa plays) + more when players get hurt. These three
leagues all have great, very good, good and average players. Period. Whoever
told Jones to make that crack about Damien Harrell 'playing at the next level,
is an idiot. Unless he thought of that himself. I remember him infuriating a
struggling Roman Gabriel of the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks (WLAF) many years ago,
lying about something
Gabriel allegedly said. How this clown has kept his job all these years is
amazing to me.
Hoge even goofed up last night too but Commissioner Dave Baker did a superb job
on during the second quarter and ESPN showed Arena League founder Jim
Foster, Jr., with his famous yellowed manilla envelope with the game/field
diagram and notes form that fateful day in Feb. 11th, 1981, when he and a
colleague from the NFL's promotions Dept., schlepped down to Madison Round
Garden (it isn't square) and watched the Major Indoor Soccer League's all-star
game and Foster put together the nuts and bolts of the game right there using
that manila envelope.

Orlando OVER New Orlean home of ArenaBowl XXI.
Colorado OVER Nashville
Utah OVER Kansas City
Austin OVER Arizona
Las Vegas (Big Upset!) OVER San Jose. Sabrecats w/out 3 starters and LV usually

Los Angeles OVER Tampa Bay. Avengers season could come down to winning this for
making the playoffs. Tampa's new QB, Brett Dietz now 2-0 to start his Pro

Philadelphia Tie New York. Neither team going anywhere so far, this year. Poor

Arizona's lefty Shredrick Bonner has become the third Pro QB to top 800 career
TDs, cathing for the moment Dallas' Clinton Dolezel and New Orlean Andy Kelly,
who in addition threw 17 more in the NFL Europa. Chicago Coach Mike Hohensee,
who has been in the League since 1987 was hit by a car (!) in a Chicago super
market on Friday and Coached last night's win over slumping Philadelphia from
the Skybox (!) He radioed plays down to Ast.H. Coach Walt Houseman and Walt sent
them in to QB Matt D'Orazio. It was awkward and it didn't look like the Rush
would pull last night's game out, but two late mistakes for the Soul made them
'soulless' for the fourth straight week. Third year Arena-Af2 QB Juston Wood got
the start over journeyman Clint Stoerner, who's contract they acquired last week
from the Nashville Kats.
Player of the week is Grand Rapids WR Timon Marshall who had a club record 405
total yards and 6 TD receptions in the Rampage narrow loss in L.A. Denver Crush
part owner Stan Kroenke who also owns teams in the NFL and NHL now wants part of

Expect Grand Rapids Coach 'Sparky' McEwen (Yes, Virginia, Sparky!) to be fired
in the next few weeks and probably be replaced by ex-Arena Bowl Grand Rapids
Coach Mike Trigg soon. Tim Marcum, formerly known as 'THE' Coach, to be safe for
a few years. Tampa should be back to normal after they clean house in late '07.
Coach Danton Barto should be OK in 'Vegas for now. It's not his fault that lousy
Owner Ferraro (or is it Ferrari?!) has screwed everything up with his
penny-pinching ways. Can you say 'Donald Sterling, Jr.'? As a member of Arena
Writers Association since 1995, I have long advocated an Ar.FL draft. Why
not? Only with a good twist to it; have it in Sept., each year and only for NCAA
players who have NOT been previously drafted by NFL or CFL teams. For example,
have the Sept. 2007 draft (hypothetically speaking) for 2006 College Footy
graduates! I really miss Charles Davis, Eli Gold and especially Mike Adamle on
the Ar.FL games this year.
Trey Wingo, Mike Greenberg and unfortunately Mark (29 operations) Shlereth,
suck. I really likes 'Stinky' Shlereth as an NFL player, but he doesn't know
beans about Arena Football. In a recent ESPN telecast, Greenberg said the
following about MVP candidate, GA QB Chris Griesen, "He's come out of nowhere."
What a meathead! Griesen not only won the NCAA Div. II Championship as QB for
Northwest Missouri St., but played three years (threw 7 passes for) the Arizona
Cardinals (poor guy!), but then played two seasons in NFL Europa and co-lead his
team (Rhein Fire, Andy Kelly's old team!) to the NFL 'AAA' Championship game,
along with Las Vegas reserve QB Nick Rolovich. Sheesh, that's NOT out of
nowhere!
On Gabe Morency's Hardcore Sportsrage this weekend Saturday, a.m., 12:37-12:51
a.m., Gabe and I recapped the games already played in week eight, covered
the Picks for the rest of the weekend and
then talked NBA and NFL Europa.
There has always been much to like about both League's though I prefer the CFL and
Af2 to NFLE. Still gotta thank Jake Jacobs for the six Canadian license
plates she sent recently, British Columbia, Ontario, Friendly Manitoba,
Saskatchewan, Wild Rose Country, Alberta and Nuveau Brunswick. Need the other
seven, if anybody can help. Hey, I haven't heard from Cowboy Jeff in a while.
Hey Jeff, you watching the Calgary Flames and / or Roughnecks in the NLL playoffs?
I still say Morency and I should be covering the Ar.FL games. Maybe ABC will
have a good crew for the ArenaBowl like in days of old. Next Week, Monday.

2) Injured N.O. QB Andy Kelly, first Pro Football QB over 800 TDs (also threw 17
in NFL Europa in 1995-96). Dolezel and he are tied all-time with 803 Pro TDs,
Kelly needs 14 more for just 800 Ar.FL only...)
3) Ray Philyaw, QB, Kansas City
4) Matt Nagy, QB, Columbus
5) Joe Germaine, QB, Utah, Ar.FL alltime record, three, 10-TD pass games (so
far) this year.
Honourable Mention: Josh 'Zeus' White, FB, Dallas [Farrington H.S., Honolulu,
O'ahu, HI/California University]
Compliments for Week 7.
Both Germaine (UT) and Chris Griesen of Georgia threw 10 TDs in games this past
weekend. Booya to Gary Bond of the Pro Football Weekly (which coincidensensely
isn't always weekly) for the puff piece on ex-Las Vegas QB, Shaun King, who got
cut last week right after the article came out. I too was critical of the poorly
run 'Vegas team for cutting him, but after the way young Af2 stud Brian Jones
played last weekend as Coach Danton Bart's guys barely lost to GA., I think
Jones will be alright. Is it my imagination, or is ESPN giving the League
average coverage on the 'World Wide Leader in Sports' network?
The know-nothing about the League announcers need to get a hold of the Ar.FL
Fact and Record Book and brush up on some names, dates, teams, et, al. I have
another beef (or as the french guys might say, 'Buf') as the Trey Wingo, Mark
Schlereth and other Arena League 'Newby' announcers continue to say "Any level
of Pro Football..." What the hell does that mean? Arena Football IS PRO
Football! It's the same level as the NFL or CFL, it's just Indoor Pro. The Bon
Jovi worship is getting so think you can cut it with a knife. Please get me and
Gabe Morency on the broadcasts, Dave Baker and Chris McCloskey to restore order.
Sheesh, even NBC, who I really don't like did a better job. At least the games
were on Sundays!
The injury to Tony 'The Graz' Graziani's shoulder (left, passing shoulder) isn't
as bad as previously thought and Af2 vet, young pivot Juston Wood isn't bad. The
drop-off from The Graz to the Kid isn't insurmoutable and can be overcome.
They have a real tiget by the tail in rapidly dominating Columbus...you guessed
it, next Monday night. Sheesh, another ESPN2 Monday nighter...Arggghhh!!!" Moose

Expect 'Vegas to bench former NFL QB Shaun King in favor of young Mr. Jones
soon. Jones won Coach Danton Barto the 2005 ArenaCup that I covered for MYKwebTV
and despite the 10 TD outburst three weeks ago, King still isn't quite
'down' with the Arena game yet. And speaking about QB troubles, the Tampa Bay
Storm's geriatric trio of Pat O'Hara (37), John Kaleo (36) and Stoney Case (35)
are not going to get it done for the team anymore.
Coach Tim Marcum started the ball rolling the wrong way when he waived Bobby
Sippio to Chicago last year and basically gave the Rush all they needed to get
to that elusive ArenaBowl - a speed WR that can burn! Remember that the late,
great Walter Payton started this club back in 1999, before Alan Levin, then Mike
Ditka took it over. Grabowski's indeed! There is a very REAL chance that the
once proud Tampa Storm could go 0-16-0! Stay Tuned to "as the Arena stomach

2) Tony Graziani, Phillky QB
3) Matt D'Orazio, Chicago QB
4) Will Pettis, Dallas WR/S/KR
Honourable Mention: A whole gaggle of folks this week: Kevin Nagle, FB/ST'r
Orlando, Kelvin Kinney, DL/TE/ST'r, Columbus, Mike Horacek, WR, New York, Marlon
Moye-Moore, LB/FB/ST'r Orlando, Clinton Dolezel, QB, Dallas.
Nice Guys do finish First Dept: It was nice to see ex-Norfolk Nighthawks Af2
Coach and I.C. Norcom VHSL Coach Deatrich Wise on the sidelines for the red-hot
Dallas Desperados! Stone Age to Begin in Tampa Bay (and Geico cavemen are
pissed!):
The Tampa Bay Storm start a new Era in week five as 10-yr. Pro Stoney Case is
set to start his first Arena League game, in his fourth Arena Pro season, this
weekend. Case, a former 6-yr. NFL vet, 35, who has suited up for the following
Pro teams; Arizona Cardinals, Barecelona Dragons [remember them?!],
Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, San Jose Sabercats and the
Storm takes over for John Kaleo, who was waived yesterday down the the Storm's
practice squad. Kaleo is really wading back in as he is now gonna serve as the
backup pivot in Tampa, along with recently activated Pat O'Hara (frankly, he
does give a damn, Scarlett). The Storm's recent 0-4 start is the worst in this
proud franchise history! Case has been a backup RB/QB/H for the Storm and
the Sabercats so far and hasn't played much in his Ar.FL career. That'll change
this weekend. Next, Tampa will try to reinvent the wheel, then fire,
then." Moose Salzer

Football Update! Week three in the books and on the radio with Gabriel Morency!
Week 4 picks!"
Week Three Scores:
Orlando 45, Austin 30
Colorado 56, Arizona 54
Georgia 61, Tampa Bay 47
Las Vegas 69, Grand Rapids 40
Chicago v. New York
Utah v. Nashville
Las Vegas v. New Orlean
Thursday: Colorado v. Philadelphia
My stint on Morency's Sirius Radio Sportsrage show this week, out of Toronto
consisted up 11 minutes on the Arena League and 14 on the NCAAs in basketball,
the most time I've spent on with Morency in quite a while! News in the League
this week is the sudden drop in the Tampa Bay Storm and Arizona Rattlers to 0-3!
(First time ever!)
Some teams have not adjusted well - yet to the new Arena League Rule changes to
raise the scoring (never usually much of problem Indoors!) and with
substitutions. Expect both of these former formidable teams to rebound soon. But
just don't expect New York to! Until veteran QB Aaron Garcia gets back, they'll
struggle. Erratic scheduling was another thing Morency and I discussed on Sirius
Chanel 186. Back on this week, after Colorado v. Philadelphia, on ESPN 2.
Game Balls for Week Three:
1) Chris Griesen, QB, Georgia
2) Coach Jay Gruden, Orlando
3) Colorado Coach, Mike Dailey
4) Colorado OL/DL Kyle Moore-Brown
5) Philadelphia QB Tony Graziani
Last month Arena League Commissioner C. David Baker, Columbus Destroyers Owner
and the Mayor of Canton, Ohio commemorated the opening of the Arena Football
League 'Wall' at the NFL Pro Football Hall-of-Fame in Canton. The Arena League
does have it's own Des Moines Iowa Hall, but it was a nice gesture to allow the
league to park an exhibit in the Pro Football Hall there with the NFL stuff as
well. A credit to both American Pro Leagues.
