The Columbus Blue Jackets are the primary owners now of the Arena League's (former) Buffalo Destroyers. The Jackets, Destroyers and Af2 ('AAA') Cincinnati Swarm (who could probably beat the Bengals!) are all linked. I just checked.

Arena Expansion: Jon Bon Jovi / Ron Jaworski's Philadelphia Soul, Austin, TX. and
Tom Benson (boggie)'s new New Orlean team, too. No word yet (anymore?) on Af2 team in Winnipeg or Anchorage, AK. (2005? 2006?) Remember the '06 Grey Cup is in Winnipeg, MB." Moose

Tues, Sept 23, 03 "Mooses Arena footy update!" Myk Aussie

A great article about the Arena Football League in the Calgary Sun newspaper Sports about Arena on page 61 today. The new Philadelphia team will be owned by rocker Jon Bon Jovi and managed by ex-Super Bowl Philadelphia QB Ron Jaworski, who currently works for ESPN. They were named the Philadelphia Soul yesterday at a press conference at the Philly Ritz-Carlton. Bon Jovi's main other partner is Ritz-Carlton owner Craig A. Spencer. New Orleans, Nashville and Austin, TX will give the 17-yr old league a record 20 teams to go with the 32 in arenafootball2, giving Arenaball 52 total teams.

For the first time ever another league will employ more Pro Football players than the NFL which has a 53 man roster (times) 32 teams. Arena Football rosters comtain 24 players like the NHL, which is what the league is also modeled after. Philadelphia's new coach will be fromer Arena Bowl winning QB and Arena Bowl winning Coach at Grand Rapids, Michael Trigg. 34 former Arena players are active on NFL rosters this season, an all-time high. There are 51 former Arena players currently active in the CFL." Moose

Arena Football Offseason Update - Expansion news...By: Rich Salzer
The Buffalo Destroyers are moving to Columbus, Ohio after their 'merger' w/ the Columbus
Blue Jackets of the NHL. Basically, the ownership has sold half the team to the Blue Jackets
owners. Mark Hamister will still be the top guy. He also owns the Rochester Brigade &
Cincinnati Swarm of Af2.

The group in Austin, Texas has also received approval to begin play in '04. New Orlean, Nashville also will come in '04 to make it an 18 team league. Possible still for '04 is the Ron Jaworski, Jon Bon Jovi group but it is unclear whether they will start in '04 or '05. Announcement pending. Also, Winnipeg, MB & Anchorage, AK possible for Af2 in '05 or '06. Stay tuned." Moose

Arena Football Off season Report By: Moose Salzer

Big, big trade. Las Vegas sends three players (two way starters @ that!) to Grand Rapids for former Arena Bowl winning QB Clint Dolezel. Coaches moves former Hawai'ian born Junior Illi signs on as OL/DL Coach with Tom Benson's new New Orleans team. Jay Gruden completes his staff by adding Willie Fears, JR. a nine-yr Pro (1yr NFL E/ 6 yrs. NFL & 2 yrs. Ar.FL'r) as OL/DL Coach.

Willie has been the last four yrs. OL/DL Coach for the Af2 American Conf. runner-up Arkansas Twisters. I met Willie when the Twisters played in Southhaven, MS v. the Memphis Xploreers. Gruden coaches the Orlando Predators, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers season is over. Jokes younger Gruden, "Yea, I'm on the Buccs staff - barely. I stir my brother Jon's coffee!" With an answer like that you can see why I love Hockey-Football! Can't wait for the 18th season to kick off in Feb. after the Pro Bowl!" Moose

Voorhees was a starter on the Rattlers '97 Championship team & also on the Barcelona team that I saw win the NFL E Championship in Montreal in '92. Voorhees funeral will be @: Desert Memorial Services, 1111 N. Las Vegas, Nevada this Wed., Sept. 2nd & (3) Ronald O. Sally has been promoted to Pres. of Football Operations of the Colorado Crush." Arena Cup IV Update, The grass-roots Football Championship of the U.S. went down in Tulsa
Oklahoma to a sell-out of almost 12,000 people. The Tulsa Talons beat the Macon (Ga.)
Knights to claim the Arena "AAA" Championship of 2003. The M.V.P. of the game was
Tulsa's third yr. QB, Craig Strickland. The Ironman of the game was OS/KR Mitch
Allner, a fourth yr. player.

The A.D.T Defencive player of the yr. was DS Larry Hollingquest, who's brother Lamont played 7 yrs. in the NFL for Washington, Green Bay & Cincinnati. Hollingquest is in his 2nd yr. The Talons beat the Hawai'ian Islanders, 58-38 two weeks ago to secure the National Conference title to play @ home in the Arena Cup." Moose

Arena Football2 Update By: Moose-Arena Salzer

Last weekend's Conference Finals: Amer. Conf.
Macon Knights 51, Tennessee Valley Vipers 48

Nat. Conf.
Tulsa Talons 63, Arkansas Twisters 52

The fourth Annual Arena Cup Championship for the grass roots team title of
the U.S. is underway Sat. in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The home-town Tulsa Talons (who I think will be upset by the surging, underrated Macon (Ga.) Knights, 61-49) are the host. I called up to man Ron Dueter w/ the Arena 2 ofc., & he had already left for Oklahoma on a flight from Chicago this morn.

So it's the surprising Macon Knights coached by John Fourcade v. Skip Foster's Hawai'i-beaters from Tulsa for the Arena 'AAA' Crown. Notes. Fourcade left the Florida Firecats, who were the runner-up last yr. in Peoria & he's back in the Cup as coach of the Knights. Que Barbaridad! (The 'ole High School Spanish kickin' it, again!) I don't even think Fourcade can lose two in a row. Fourcade, for those w/long memories (Scott Baxter, who remembers EVERYTHING. Scott, you sure you're not a republican, or @ least their mascot?!), Fourcade was the 1st of the former Arena QBs to go to the NFL...sort of the Kurt Warner of the '87 strike teams... Foster's Talons have beat my beloved Islanders 4 straight time...I'm definately rooting against
them!" Moose

Thanks to Brian Sternberg for the Las Vegas Gladiators Media Information
guide he sent recently. Also to Mike M. with John Elway's Colorado Crush Media I just got yesterday in the mail. On one page is the Jerry Crafts bio.

Big Jerry played alongside QB Jay Gruden one yr. @ Louisville Univ. Jerry was @ Oklahoma first but transferred. After he wasn't drafted by the NFL, Jerry signed in Dec. '90 w/ the new World League of Football to play for the Montreal Machine. I was there  in Montreal, a great town w/ great media people for the NFL E Bowl, June,
1992. In 1993 & '94 Jerry played Offensive Line for the Buffalo Bills & was
on the losing side of one of their Super Bowl blowouts v. Dallas. In spring of '95 Jerry was signed by Myk's Green Bay Packers & sent to NFL Europe, which now had 6 'AAA' teams based in Europe only.

Amsterdam lost the NFL E Bowl in the spring of '95, Jerry's third loss in a
Championship game. While in Amsterdam, he was a teammate of Myk's San Diego mate, Darren Bennett. He spent the fall on Green Bay's practice squad & went back to Amsterdam as a free agent in spring '96. From 1997-99 Jerry played for the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2000 he played with Tommy Maddox & Michael Lewis on the New Jersey Red Dogs of the Arena League & the Toronto Argos when the Ar.FL season was over.

In 2001 Lewis went to the Saints of the NFL & Maddox & Crafts went to the
Los Angeles Extreme of the X-FL. He finally won a Championship there. Coach Al Luginbill bought the team players Championship rings after the "Commissioner" Vince McMahon wouldn't. What a guy.

Now here's where it really gets interesting: After the demise of the X-FL
May 10, 2001, Crafts went back to the Jersey Red Dogs while Maddox went back to NFL (FINALLY!). when the Ar.FL season was over, Crafts went back to the Toronto Argos. When their CFL season was over he went back to the NFL on Maddox recommendation, to the Oakland Raiders.

In 2002 Crafts played for the Buffalo Destroyers & had a thirty nine yd. INT.
return for his 1st career TD v. the Toronto Phantoms! I thought the building was going to shake down around us on that run! When the Ar.FL season was over he played in the CFL again, this time splitting his season between Hamilton & Montreal. In the spring of '03 he beat out Neal Fort for the starting C/NG job with  the Las Vegas Gladiators. This is the same Neal Fort he played behind @ Montreal! Crafts has put 19 different Football seasons into 12 yrs! He has played for 13
different teams in 5 different Leagues & in one strech 73 games in 81 weeks!

Jerry Crafts deserves to be in someone's Hall of Fame, so I'll make it mine.
Anybody that is that durable deserves it. The next step is for a CFL team to pick him up for the rest of this season! Good Luck, Jerry!"  Moose Salzer

Mon Aug 11, 03 "Oh no Mooses Hawaiian Islanders are out! Moose Arena Footy & Hawaii radio update!" Myk

...And then there were four. Teams left in the chase for Arena Cup IV, that
is. It's Aug. 11th, 2003 and the final Four of Arena 2 are Macon (GA.) Knights, Arkansas Twisters, Tennesee Valley Vipers & the Tulsa Talons. I am picking Tulsa to win it all since they beat a very good Hawai'i team by 20 points Sat. in Oklahoma.

The results from this weekend semi-final games:

Tulsa Talons 58, Hawai'ian Islanders 38
Macon Knights 59, Albany Conquest 47
Arkansas 63, Quad City Steamwheelers 61
Tennesee Valley Vipers 40, Mohegan Wolves 37 (Sorry, Ken)

Ricky Hebert should be ready to move up to the show (Arena League) next
season as w/ the Pass-Catch tandem of Tulsa's QB Craig Strickland & OS/KR Mitch Allner. In Arena League News. Tampa Bay's Sai Pouliva'ati, a tongan from Hawai'i has retired after nine seasons to pursue graduate work @ the Univ. of Oregon St. Poulava'ati played for San Jose, Anaheim & Tampa Bay. The Storm's win in Arena Bowl XVII gave Sai his 1st Championship ring of his Pro Football career.

The Indiana Firebirds got their man. They hired highly sought after Coach Steve DeBerg, an NFL QBing vet w/ three Super Bowl Appearances to this credit, as H.Coach, Fri. DeBerg went to the Super Bowl w/ Dallas in '77 as a 3rd string rookie QB from San Jose St. He went back to the Super Bowl in '98 as the Falcons back -up QB & again as N.Y. Giants QB coach in '00. The Buffalo Destroyers have filled their Coaching vacancy by hiring former Grand Rapids Rampage H.Coach Mike Trigg. Trigg lead Detroit to the '89 Arena Bowl III Championship as QB before losing his job to Art Schlichter in '90...Trigg lead Grand Rapids to the Arena Bowl XV Championship in '01as H.Coach.

Radio Honolulu Update...
By: Rich Salzer

I was on last night w/ Super Bowl Wayne, Randy Myamoto, Reggie, Dede & Marty
Sorenson again on what may be the last (for now) SuperSports, KUMU2 / A.M. 1500
Broadcast. We discussed my man Eric Piatkowski, the NBA's biggest fan of mykaussie.com, signing for three yrs. w/ the Houston Rockets for $9,000,000.00 (I wonder if the Clips all-time leader in games played, three point FGs, FGs made, attempted, highest 3 pt. %age & highest lifetime %age FT shooter would like to become one of our sponsors?). The move comes as the career long L.A.'r decided he wanted to make a run @ an NBA Championship.

Pete Sagella, from Cleveland's a.m. 1400 was on with us along w/ former Kansas City Royal pitcher Mark Gubaza from L.A. 880 A.M...Wayne is looking for ways to get more sponsorship to help his financial situation. Wayne a streak of 27 Super Bowls in a row (though he snuck into the 1st 13!!) & 15 either World Series or MLB All-star games, too.  Wayne vowed to meet me & Myk @ Super Bowl XXXVIII no matter what! Way to go trooper!
Wayne you are an ace. I've been on 38 shows w/ you in the last 31 weeks
(sometimes Fri. nights, too...I love 'ya!" Moose

1st, big news. I've just contracted w/ Maximilian Press of Chesapaeake, VA.
to have my sports columns compilated into bound volumes fo 180-199 pgs. + a glue-back bound spine. They will be available for the e-store on our site in late Oct., about a month before the CFL Grey Cup. They include contributions from Myk Aussie, Ken Saroka, Randy Myamoto & of course Mr. Football himself, Scott Baxter. $12 U.S. & $20 cndn. Stay tuned. I've also gotten my new stationary & cards for 2004.

Now on to a sad note, the final episode, maybe ever of Super Bowl Times.com/Hawai'i 5-0 Sports/Super Sports show w/ Wayne LaVelle in Honolulu
is tonight & Myk & I will be on @ 12:10-12:20, EST, 10:10-10:20, Cnd. Mtn. timezone, 6:-7:p.m., HST.

I have been on Super Bowl Wayne's show 37 times since the Super Bowl in San
Diego (30 weeks in a row!) on either Friday or Sunday nights. In other words, I owe
Wayne an awful lot. Much Mahalo to Wayne & his lovely wife, Marty Sorenson. I'll do my real goodbyes on the air tonight. Wayne you were my favorite Media Guy I met in San Diego. You've been to 27 consecutive Super Bowls & 15 either MLB Championships or All-star games. I have a fairly complete resume too: w/ 10 Grey Cups, 5 Arena Bowls, 5 Pro Bowls, 1 ArenaCup, 1 Super Bowl et., al But I'm still a pup in the business. Thanks for all you're help! God Bless & stay in touch!

The show is out of funding from adverting & Wayne is $1800 in the whole to
the Station. The silver lining in this unfortunately dark cloud is that Randy Myamoto & Scott Ka'alele, the Hawai'i Islander announcers are going ahead w/ a new Show, ostensibly in the same time slot. I will still be a weekly guest co-host & Mykaussie, the crazy guy, will still call in w/ all the Sports news from Honolulu. I will be in Hawai'i by Dec. to cover some Univ. of Hawai'i games like last season. It has yet to be determined if Dede Frietas will continue her internship on the new format Program. Stay tuned!

Bad joke of the week: Q - Why don't cannibals eat clowns? A- They taste
funny!

Indoor Futbal en Deuschland: In Germany there are now two divisions of
indoor flag football; A junior Div. & a Senior Div. This yr. in the May issue of Huddle Magazin, The Frankfurt Pirates won both Indoor Flag Bowls. The interesting part of all this is that these teams play w/ eight (8) players across like in the Arena League & Af2! Some Nth. Virginia teams are now starting to play eight man indoor football pre-training camp. I saw some pics in the Washington Post while @ the Norfolk Airport waiting to catch a plane to Memphis on my last footy trip in the air." Moose
