 Tues
July 27, 03 "Arena Football Report" Moose Salzer

 Scott Baxter & I
attended the Norfolk Nighthawks last game of the season
Sat., @ Scope Arena in downtown Norfolk & watch the red-hot Greensboro
Prowlers hand the 'Hawks their 3rd straight 8-8-0 season, in a 67-65 loss. Eric
Pesola, the
Nighthawks fine Media Guy said it correctly afterward: " I guess this 8-8
is less painful than last years." Indeed.

Next week look for the pics from this game; I just dropped them off for
developing today. The Nighthawks season started out w/ alot of promise (5-2-0)
but Once again All-World Travis Burns (who was given an award for the 3,000+ yd.
season he had this yr., by team G.M./Pres. Billy Mann before the game) &
Chris Wallace couldn' t carry the whole team.

The Nighthawks had foru starters out w/ injuries & it showed in the fourth
quarter as a red-hot Greensboro Pass-Catch combo of QB Caleb Slover & WR/DB/KR
Billy Sippio were not to be denied. It doesn't matter now however, as Greensboro
didn't make the playoffs; The Cape Fear Wildcats beat the Memphis Xplorers,
55-33 to win the Atlantic Div. w/ a 10-6 record. Greensboro finished 9-7-0, in
2nd place.

The Nighthawks trailed 57-41 going into the fourth quarter, then Wallace &
Burns, who scored 5 TDs on the night (& won game M.V.P), scored three
different ways (K-return, rush & pass recpt.). The 'Hawks did cut the lead
to the final score, 67-65 w/ 7 seconds left but a botched onside kick allowed
visiting Greensboro to escape with their fifth win in-a-row to end the season.

It didn't matter that Burns opened the game w/ a 56-yd Kick return for a
TD, as Prowler Coach Steve Jerry, our former Offencive Coordinator seemed to
know every play Norfolk Of. Coordinator Ron Hill was about to call. Hill was
Jerry's assistant in '00. Last two seasons, Jerry was Roanoke's Coach the last
two seasons before the team folded & this yr. he moved to North Carolina's
other team. The seemingly endless 'Economy w/ Dignity Football' tour rolls into
Fayetteville (or as Scott calls it, 'Fayettenam') next weekend as I will call my
media guy w/ Cape Fear, Ryan Nickodemus, for a media pass for myself for the
Wildcats v. Mohegan game, Sat. night.

Time for Moose's Post season notes...If I were Off. Coordinator Ron Hill (or as
some call him 'Ill) w/ Nighthawks colors threw out my wardrobe. Hill's offence
is dull &
predictable. Just because we lucked onto QB Chris Wallace @ the end of the
season doesn't mean the silly QB shuffle w/ again Aaron Sparrow worked all that
well. Sparrow got so frustrated that he threw down his helmet @ his feet in
disgust when Hill benched him & yelled @ him when he threw that 1st quarter
INT. Sparrow was speared by Greensboro's Raymond James on the play & if Iill
really cared about Hometown guy Sparrow he should have yelled @ the official
standing right there who should have AT LEAST PENALIZED them 15 yds for
spearing. Hill has been spinning his wheels the last 3 yrs., as alleged Offensive
Guru anyway. The team has never replaced the outstanding Steve Jerry as Offensive
Coordinator. If Coach Rick Frazier, who will probably go back to Arena League as
they expand again - needs to
do is find an offensive minded guy who can mix plays & signals better.

 KUMU 2 / am 1500 Super Sports, Friday July 25th, 2003
w/ Wayne LaVelle, Scott Ka'alele, Randy Myamoto, Arena Football Analyst,
 Rich Salzer & Dede Si

The Show was on Fr. night because of the Hawai'ian Islanders Sun. July 27th
game v. the Bakersfield Blitz. Guest was Islanders Coach Call Lee. Coach Cal Lee
&
assistants Frank Pahia & Vince Passes are new to the Arena game this yr.
They along w/ their incumbant coaches Doug Semones & Darren Hernandez did a
great job in turning the 5-11-0 Islanders of last yr. into this year's Western
Div. Champ team that went 10-6-0.

The two questions I asked coach Lee before I went off the air, after doing my
Report for 'This Week in Af2' were: (1) At what point did you think this Year's
Islanders squad could be special & challenge for the Arena Cup & How
quickly did it take yourself & assistants Pahia & Passes to adapt to the
speed of the indoor game. Coach Lee: "Aloha, Rich. Thanks...Good questions:
1st when we played the (expansion) Green Bay Blizzard @ home, we won but I
didn't know what we had {yet}. After we beat Quad City in the 2nd game, there I
knew this team had something...(They had only lost four home games in their
history-R.S.)...And as for the speed of Arena Football- I-we're still
adjusting..." I ended w/ much mahalo & good luck this weekend, coach
& in the playoffs."

Late Arena Note: Speaking of Hawai'i, how about news of one of the Big
Island's athletes who 'moved up' this week: Keala Keana'aina, from Hilo, who
signed a one-yr. contract w/ the Cleveland Browns of the NFL. Keala spent the
last two yr. w/ the Arena Bowl XVI Champ San Jose Sabercats & this yr. was
1st team All-Arena FB/LB. Way to go Keala!" Moose

On Sat. night in Wichita, FB/LB Julian Yearwood died in the bench area of
the Bakersfield Blitz as they played in v. the Stealth in Kansas. Yearwood, a
3rd yr. player collapsed & after 15 minutes of trying to resuscitate him, he
was loaded into an ambulance & sent to Wichita General Hospital where he was
pronounced dead on arrival. Yearwood, a 2nd team Af2 selection last season, was
having his best 'AAA' Pro season.

On the yr., he had 22 solo tackles, 6.5 sacks, 1 int. & averaged 5.0 yards
per carry. Two yrs. ago a player for the NIFL ('AA') Utah team, 35 collapsed
& died in a similar manner. Our best condolences go out Yearwood's family,
wherever they are. I spoke w/ Super Bowl Wayne, Scott Ka'alele & Randy
    Myamoto about this last night on KUMU2 AM 1500 @ 12:midnight, EST. ( 6: p.m.
Honolulu time) on Super Bowl times/ Super Sports. Wayne also filled the audience
in about his trip to Chicago ("I made the All-star game w/ 10 cents in my
pocket). Wayne also made a good point about Laker meathead Kobe Bryant & his
adulterous affair. Hang 'em High, I say! Besides, you'd never see a Clipper in
trouble w/ the law like that!

Af2 Spokesman Ron Deuter, who I spoken w/ said there will be no official word
given until an autopsy has been performed, pending family approval of Yearwood's.

 Arena League Update By:
Rich Salzer (w/ Scott Baxter)

Sat., July 5th, 2003 Scott Baxter & Rich 'Moose' Salzer were 'representing'
for MykWebT.V., (S.F. X-FL shirt & all!) @ the Norfolk Scope as the hometown
Arena2 league Nighthawks crushed the state rival Richmond Speed by the largest
margin in the 4 yr. history of the series, 63-28.

Norfolk now leads the series 5-3 lifetime. Richmond recently had fired longtime
coach, Richard Davis & replaced him w/  - the entire staff (of
co-coaches)! It didn't work as the 'Hawks pressured former Norfolk QB Roy
Johnson all night. Chris Wallace, who Scott correctly picked as M.V.P. threw 5
TDs & his backup, Aaron Sparrow threw 3 off the bench & ran for one more
score. The 28 pts. by Richmond is lowest totla in team history v. Norfolk.

I got to the game late but Scott filled me in on the two long Wallace TD
passes in the 1st quarter. From there it was really a turkey shoot. Scott also
thought Ona Matthews was sensational leading the Hawk Times girls but that's
another subject. After the game, Scott & I went to A.J. Gators bar to
celebrate the Nighthawk win, watch the end of the NASCAR race (won by a rookie!)
& have an adult libation or 3 (Labatt Blues were only a toonie, eh?)...

The rest of the Af2 Standings:

 Mohegan 63, Bossier City 26
 Cincinnati 53, Rochester 17
 Albany 59, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 58
Florida 52, Cape Fear 35 (helps the Nighthawks!)
 Greensboro 76, Charleston 62
 Macon 75, Columbus 42
 Birmingham 55, Arkansas 54
Tennesee Valley 51, Memphis 36 (not only is T.V. 13-0 but their win puts
 Hawai'i into playoffs!)
 Louisville 56, Peoria 38
Quad City 75, Green Bay 29

Af2 News...Nighthawks need to run the table but mathematically can still win
the division... Was on w/ Super Bowl Wayne, Randy & Reggie both Fri. night
& Sun. night this weekend... Gave CFL & Af2 scores & discussed the
9-4 Islanders 1st playoffs in team history...Magic # for Hawai'i to clinch the
division now is two, w/ @ least one loss by Wichita...Got a perfect QB to be P/U
by Arena2 team heading to the playoffs...Dan Crowley formally from Ottawa
Renegades (CFL) but more on that in the CFL column on 'Friends of CFL - U S A'
section...also Keith Smith ex- of Esks...Will be heading to Memphis on Thurs.
this week & will be @ Xplorers v. Arkansas game Sat. 12th...Islanders in
Tulsa v. always tough Talons same night... Won't do 'picks' this - too short on
time w/ car inspections, packing etc...

Call me @ cell # 1-757-406-7043 for late breaking news...will be on w/ Randy
& Wayne (Reggie on vacation in Chicago, he may stay there for MLB All-star
game, stay tuned...) Fri. & Sun. nights from Mississippi, South Haven where
I am staying for Memphis game...I will be all over Scott's Southland this
weekend in Alabama, Missouri, Louisiana, Arkansas & 'Ole Miss'...Will try to
call Gabriel Morency in Montreal Fri. as well! Much Mahalo & Aloha ! "

Folks, don't forget the 'ole Moose is out in the rental car in two (or more?)
cities in the the good 'ole U S A next month, a week after the anniversary of
kicking British arce in 1781. On July 11th I fly into Memphis, Tn. to see the
Sat. July 12th game of the Memphis Xplorers v. the Arkansas (Truth) Twisters (er,
whoops, Bill Cliton is gone from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.). I leave to come home
in Sun. July 13th. I hope to see Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas &
Missouri (or @ least dip my big toe across the border into as many of those fine
states as possible.

On July 18th I fly out to me & Myk's Super Bowl XXXVII HAUNT, San Diego, CA.
for the Riptide v. Hawai'i Islanders Af2 game. I have media arranged for both.
Then
in Aug for 2-3 weeks I'll be on the lovely island of Oahu, in Honolulu, Hawai'i
for the
Af2 playoffs. The Islanders are now 10-4 & should be able to have @ least 1
home playoff game @ the Neal Blaisdell Centre (hopefully all the way through to  Arena
Cup IV!).

Now for more important Arena Football news. The Colorado Crush of John
Elway, the greatest QB of all time!, Pat Bolen & Stan Kroenke have traded
three players to the Indiana Firebirds for coach Mike Dailey, thus ending a
13-yr working
relationship w/coach Mike & the club. Dailey started in the Arena Football
league as a
player then coach for the Washington/Maryland Commandos in 1989-90. He became
line coach for the Albany Firebirds in 1991. This is the 2nd time in Ar.FL
history that a player(s) have been traded for a coach. When Expansion Nashville
hired Jay Gruden as Offensive Coordinator in '97 the Tampa Bay Storm required a
starter to be sent to them & the league retire Gruden as a player. OL/DL
Jerry Sharpe was traded along w/ cash to Tampa.

Elway is serious about contending for Arena Bowl XVIII next yr. Dailey is
the third winningest coach in Ar.FL history behind Tamp Bay's Tim Marcum &
Arizona's Danny White. Ex-Carolina Coach Mike Neu has just signed a two-yr deal
to be the New Orleans expansion team's coach. Hawai'i  Af2 QB Darnell
Arceneaux has retired as a player to be the newe head football coach of Saint
Louis Crusader H.S. program. Islander coach Cal Lee will join his brother Ron on
the Univ. of Hawai'i Warrior staff this summer, after the Islander season is
over in Aug. Call, formerly head football coach & athletic director @ St.
louis School will coach the Defensive backs. The Fran Papasadero Memorial Fund
address is: F.P.M.F., c/o Keli @ Orlando Predators, 4901 Vineland Avenue, Suite
#150, Orlando, Fla. 32811...

Papasadero's youngest child is his two month old daughter, Vivian. Pls. sent
condolence Cards, Flowers, or if the spirit moves you, $$$ - in U S or checks
drawing on U S bank accounts, I know I will... As I discussed on Sportsrage Fri.
night, wouldn't it be something if Gladiator's Jerry Crafts joins the Montreal
Als in the CFL...Think about it - he beat out OLm Neal Fort in Las Vegas but
Crafts would back him up in Montreal..." Moose
