 Mon, June 23, 03 "Hail
Hail! Tampa Bay, City of Champions! Mooses Arena footy update!" Myk Aussie

June 23rd, 2003 Arena League Update By: Moose Salzer

Hail Hail! Tampa Bay, City of Champions!! The Bucs won the Super Bowl then
six months later, the Storm won Arena Bowl XVII. What did Danny White's Arizona
Rattlers in for the 2nd yr. in a row in the Arena Championship game was
turnovers. It looks like Shredrick Bonner, Randy Gatewood, Hunkie Cooper &
Bo Kelly, Mark Tucker are just getting old. If they lose two more in a row
they'll be the Buffalo Bills of the Arena League.

Tampa Bay spent big bucks in the off-season, by Arena standards by signing
 three ex-Predators in QB Pat O'Hara, DB/WR/QB Cliff Dell & DE/TE B.J. Cohen.
Not to mention ex-Eskimo CFL'r Kelvin Kinney, from Virginia State. When the
smoke cleared, Tampa had it's record 5th Arena Bowl title.

For the 1st time in Arena Bowl history, Lawrence (Law-Dog) Samuels, won both the
M.V.P.& Ironman of the game. Samuels is the older brother of NFL
Washington's T
 Chris Samuels.

Coach Tim Marcum had to make a difficult choice during the game when
starting 10-yr. QBJohn Kaleo went out w/ a back injury that literally took his
breath away. #2QB for the gamewas Tampa's best hands guy, Cliff Dell, who
normally plays H/WR/DB. He canalso play KR/QB.Dell had to leave the game for #3
Pat O'Hara, normally the #2 QB to come in.

O'Hara, who played the last two yrs. @ QB for the Toronto Phantoms was
playing in his 5thArena Bowl. With Tampa's win he'll get his 4th ring. The only
time he didn't get a ring was w/ the '99 Orlando Preds, who lost 58-49 @ Albany
v. the (now Indiana) Firebirds. O'Hara wasbrilliant completing 8 of 13 passes
for 176 yds., 2 TDs & rushing for onemore. In my book heshould have been
M.V.P.

It was the 7th Arena Championship for Tampa coach Tim Marcum, another
record. It was the 1st Championship of any kind for many of the Storm players
including starting QB John Kaleo. There was F.P. stickers placed on the helmets
of all players before the game in honour of Fran Papasadero, the coach of the
Orlando Predators who was killed in a car crash Friday evening. No doubt Fran
would have coached several Predator teams in the Championship
if he had lived. Congratulations to Tampa, though on a great season. And
Kelvin, get yourself up to Edmonton on the double - that defense needs you!

Moose Salzer @ Nighthawks v. Conquest
Sat. 7p.m. @ Scope Arena, Norfolk, VA.

I was in attendance w/ Media Credentials Sat., Jun. 21st when the
hometown football Norfolk Nighthawks hosted a game v. Conference rival 9-1
Albany Conquest, who the 'Hawks dropped to 9-2 w/ a smashing 63-46 victory. The
Nighthawks pulled out all the stops in defeating the Af2 team that had beaten
them @ Pepsi Centre Arena one week ago. One of the highlights was reacquiring
former Nighthawk QB Chris Wallace, who ask for his release following the Orlando
Predators ouster from the playoffs bythe Tampa Bay Storm two weeks ago.

The Nighthawks used regular QB Aaron Sparrow in the 1st & 3rd quarters &
Wallace in the 2nd & 4th quarters. It totally threw Albany off kilter as
Wallace is more of an option/runner QB & Sparrow more of the passer. After
the game Coach Rick Frazier said that this system will continue to be employed
for the rest of the season. Another highlight was the Washington Redskin
cheerleaders performing @ halftime.

The Nighthawks are now 6-5 w/ 3of their last 5 games @ Scope. It is doubtful
they will catch Cape Fear but should still make the playoffs w/ a 2ns place
finish in American Conference Atlantic Division.

I was on the Airwaves a record three times this past weekend! On Gabriel
Morency's Sportsrage, The Team AM 990-Fri. @ 11:15, EST, Honolulu's KUMU 2/ AM
1500 12:30, EST & again on Sun. night w' Honolulu @ 12:15 a.m., EST on Wayne
LaVelle's
 superbowltimes.com/Hawai'i 5-0 Sports.

I appeared on Sportsrage w/ Montreal Gabriel Morency on Friday
night from 11:15-11:23p.m. The main topic was the Preview of Arena Bowl XVII on
NBC. I predicted a Tampa win, 39-36. Gabriel asked why I would pick Arizona to
lose their 2nd Arena Championship in a row. As I explained I
didn't think the Rattlers had enough team speed v. Tampa's defence. (The final
score was Tampa 43, Arizona 29) It was too early Fri. evening to know of the
untimely death of Orlando coach Fran Papasedero. Gabriel & Moose discussed
the T.V. ratings, How Chris Horn's leaving affected the Rattlers
(Horn signed w/ Rose's K.C. Chiefs after game 10 of the arena season).

In my two discussions w/ Super Bowl Wayne, Randy & Reggie the guys
taked about Myk & Moose's upcoming footy trips:
Moose will be @ The Norfolk Scope for the July 5th Nighthawks
July 12th in Mississippi @ the Memphis Xplorers v. Arkansas Twisters - Af2
game then July 18th out to San Diego for the Riptides v. Hawai'i Islanders
back home for the Nighthawks July 26th home finale v. Greensboro. Then out to
Honolulu for the Islanders 1st home playoff Arena2 game.In Sept Moose is back up
to the great white Nth for two weeks of CFL games...stay tuned! There's
always a rental car rollin' towards a footy gig somewhere in the world!
Aloha & Mahalo! - Moose Salzer

 "Moose a great
year reporting on Arena Footy. Awesome" Myk Aussie

 Sat, June 21, 03 "Arena
League Mourns loss of great young coach - Fran Papasadero" By: Moose Salzer

Fran Papasadero, 34, coach of the Arena Football League's Orlando Predators
was killed in a single car accident on the exit ramp going from the Preds
offices to the highway Fri. night in Orlando, Fla. Papasadero, who is survived
by his wife & two children will be buried in Springfield, MA. next week.

Papasadero & friend Jay Gruden go way back in the Ar.FL. Papsadero went to
Springfield College in Massachusettes. After attending camp w/ the New England
Patriots in '92, Papasadero went on to play five seasons in the Ar.FL w/
St.Louis & Tampa Bay, where he was a two-time 1st-team All- Arena selection.
He & Gruden, who QB'd the Storm to four Arena Bowl titles played two yrs.
together. Papasadero started in Arena coaching in the '97 season w/ Tampa.

When Jay Gruden became the head coach of the Preds in '98, Papasadero joined
his coaching staff as Line coach. In '99 he became defensive coach & in '00
he became Defensive Coordinator. He '01 he became Ast.H.Coach/Def. Coordinator.
in Aug '01 Papasadero became Head Coach/Def. Coordinator/ Special teams
Coordinator for Orlando when Jay Gruden stepped down as coach to return to the
playing field for Preds as QB after 5 seasons in coaching.

Papasadero had a two yr. record of 22 Ws & 13 Ls .710%, the highest winning
% in Orlando franchise history! The Preds went to the semi-finals twice in both
of Fran's two yrs. as head coach, w/ his friend Jay Gruden as QB. Papasadero's
family will be paid the remainder of his salary. At 34 he could have conceivable
coached the Preds indefinitely! It may take Gruden's returning to the sidelines
to help fill the void.

Losing Papasadero really means losing three coaches because of the hats he
wore. Papasadero played in two Arena Bowls & coached in three more (1998,
1999 & 2000). Rest in Peace, Fran." Moose

 Notes...Scott
Baxter's ex-Wash. NFL mate Kelvin Kinney will try for his 2ndPro Football Championship in 7 months as the Tampa Bay Storm take on the Arizona
Rattlers in Arena Bowl XVII on Sun., NBC @ 3 p.m...K.K. played for the Edmonton
Eskimos last season & they lost the 90th Grey Cup Championship @ home in
Esks-land last Nov. 24th...Myk & I were there for MykWebT.V...Arizona is
trying to not pull a New Jersey Nuclear Swamp Nets by losing their 2nd Arena
Bowl
in-a-row...Last Aug. 18th they were blasted by the San Jose Sabercats, cousins
of the San Jose Sharks, 52-14, the worst beating ever in an Arena Bowl...I don't
give the snakes much of a chance v. Tampa, which could become the 1st City in
U.S. to win both the outdoor (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) & indoor (Stoem)
U.S. Pro Football titles...My pick is Tampa by three...This may be Ariz.'s best
& last chance to win one...Six of their main guys are over 30+ yrs.
old...You tend to age faster athletically when playing Hockey-Football (i.e.,
offence, defense & special teams)...

Got a media pass for myself for the Nighthawks game here in Af2 for Sat. night @
scope...Sorry, Scott, could only get one...'Hawks need this win v. Albany
Conquest as they have slipped from 5-2 three weeks ago to 5-5 & a tie for
2nd place in the American Conference Atlantic Division...Chris Horn was probably
the reason Arz. lost to San Jose in Arena Bowl XVI last Aug., as he was out
hurt...This yr. The Rattles lost him to Kansas City, who I think will be in
Super Bowl XXXVIII, in Houston, Tx., Feb 1st, '04...Other Ar.FL players to sign
w/ NFL are: Dallas QB
Jim Kubiak (no relation to Gary) w/ Colts, K Clay Rush w/ Jets, Chicago Rush
Antonio Chatman w/ Myk's Packers, Desperados Will Pettis w/ cross-town Cowboys
(or is it girls?), ex-Carolina Cobra Chris Doering w/ Steelers (his 7th team in
3rd diff. league!) & WR/SB Mike Furrey (N.Y.-Ar.FL) to Rams... Furrey played
w/ Nthern  Iowa Cyclones like Rams QB Kurt Warner, is from Warner's
hometown & Warner 2 an Arena game to except an award, saw Furrey score six
TDs & recommended him to Martz & Co. as a repalcement for Ricky Proehl,
who flew the coop to Carolina Panthers...Got that straight?..Whew!

In CFL action last night (Tues.) the Grey Cup defending Champion Montreal
Alouettes got by Calgary, 23-20 in O.T...@ least the Stamps, who I think are
in for a rough yr., get an O.T. loss point (a la the NHL)...Great story
about Desperados coach Joe Avezzano, who is coaching the Cowboy/
girls? specail teams for one more season, in this week's USA Today Sports
Weekly...Scott's Wash.-NFL should take a good long look @ Robert Gillespie after
the game he had v. the Rhein in NFL E Bowl XI... Goodbye & good luck to
recently departed OL/DL Ken McDaniel of the Norfolk Nighthawks, waived after 3.5
seasons...Bring back Tony Britt!...Jay Clarke also out for the season w/ knee
surgery...Lots of new guys in 'Hawk uniforms last Sat. v. Albany @ Pepsi Centre
but still a 7 pt. loss w/ 1.3 sec(s) left." Moose

June 15, 2003 "Mooses Arena footy 2 update" Myk
 Arena Notes...The Norfolk
Nighthawks limp into the Albany Pepsi Centre
tonight w/out a lot of familiar faces: OL/DL Ken McDaniel has been released from
the team due to violation of club policy, whatever that is. KS/LB/WR Jay Clarke
is out for the rest of the season w/ torn knee ligaments, C/NG LaShaun

Mack is getting married this weekend (Congratulations LaShaun!) & both DSs,
Quesuan Wigfall & Mel Coleman are out injured, too. FB/LB Chris Morant is
now property of the Baltimore Ravens @ least for the moment & OL/DL Ron
Wiafe is also out of action this week.

The Nighthawks won't quit as long as ex-Toronto coach Rick Frazier has any
fight in him but w/ an 18-man all-iron unit w/ 4 new faces facing the 9-1 Albany
Conquest on the road tonight, don't EXPECT a victory from tonight's contest. I'd
settle for a tie! Four new players, who coach Frazier admits not knowing (none
have any previous experience in any other Pro leagues - indoors or outdoor) make
their respective debuts for the 'Hawks tonight in Albany.

They are: DSs William Haithe & Rodney Randall, FB/LB Kevin Fuller & OL/DL
 Anthony Chiaravelle.
Good Luck v. Conquest guys - you'll need it." Moose

 Arena Football Update By: Rich
Salzer

 Sunday, June 22nd, 2003
Arena Bowl XVII, the World Championship of Indoor Pro Football - featuring:
#6 seed Arizona Rattlers v. the #3 seed Tampa Bay Storm

 Highlights: the matchups:
Coaches: Arz. Danny White, 12th yr, 2nd winningest coach in Arena Football
 history
 Arena Bowls: 3, winning two ('94 & '97; losing '02) v. Tampa's Tim Marcum,
15th yr., winningest coach in Arena Football history Arena Bowls: 9, winning six
('87, '88, '89, '92, '95, '96; losing '91, '93 & '98)

QBs: Arz. Shredrick Bonner (pronounced 'Sedrick'), 4th Arena Bowl; backed up
Paul Justin on Arz. '94 champs; injured- did not play in '97 Arz. win; played in
last yrs. 52-14 loss to San Jose v Tampa's John Kaleo, 10th season in the
league, 1st A.B. appearance,

 Hawai'ian connection: Tampa's OL/DL Sai Poulava'ati from Oahu v. Arizona's
FB/LB John Peaua & OL/DL (INACTIVE) Olen Rosehill; Univ. of Hawai'i Warrior,
former ('02) Hawai'i Islander in Af2.

What to look for: This game will be won on the line. Kaleo & Bonner both had
career yrs. as QBs. Bonner has way more Championship experience as QB - in
addition to a 4-1 ratio in Arena Bowl appearances, Bonner went to the Super Bowl
w/ the Atlanta Falcons (3rd-str.) in '98 when they lost to Denver in Big John
Elway's last Super Bowl appearance. At the skill positions both teams are even.
Give a slight edge to Tampa on special teams since two of it's key performers,
TE/DE
B.J. Cohen & WR/DB Cliff Dell, who had a huge day v. Orlando last Sat., both
used to play for the Preds when they won in '00. Cohen was actually in three
straight A.B.'s from ('98-'00).

Give the edge to Marcum in the coaching department, too. Hey, he's coaching in
his 10th A.B. in 15 yrs.! Prediction: Tampa Bay 39, Arizona 36. I'm predicting
the best Arena Bowl yet even if the the #1 & #2 seeds, San Jose &
Orlando didn't make it.

Notes...* The Quad City Steam are still on suspension from post-season play
for the '03 season for recruitment violations during the '00-'01 seasons. The
team is
owned by Jim Foster, who also owned the Iowa Barmstormers in '00-'01. In '00 the
Barnstormers were in the arena football league. In '01 they played in arena2.
Foster was allowing the Steamwheelers to "barrow" players from the
Barnstormers, giving them up unfair advantage over the Af2's other teams.

Commissioner C. David Baker & Foster met & the result was a two
yr. suspension of the Steamwheelers from post-season play for the '02 & '03
seasons.  + Hawai'i has already beaten the Steamwheelers in their only
meeting of the '03 season, in the Mark arena in Moline, Ill. where Quad City
plays it's home games.

If the playoffs started today, the seedings would be: Wichita @ Hawai'ian
Islanders, Cincinnati @ Peoria, Arkansas @ Tulsa, Macon @ Tennesee Valley,
Mohegan @ Albany, and Norfolk Nighthawks @ Cape Fear" Moose

Arena League Notes this week...Bossier City coach, Chad Carlson was released
from his contract last week by the Battle Wings & they still lost to Macon,

stepped down following the Islanders 1-6 start...Carlson went 4-5 in the last
nine games in '02...The Blizzard won their 1st game in franchise history &
 now stand @ 1-8 on the season...Tenn. Vipers now 9-0 on season...Remember,
it doesn't matter how many Quad City wins this season because they still are
ineligible for the playoffs until '04...

 Nighthawks w/ their 2nd flat performance in a row...Now @ 5-4 on
season...They still will make the playoffs unless a total Bobby Hebert-style
melt down occurs but they are now 2.5 games behind div. leader Cape Fear, who's
7-2 & who beat Norfolk twice!..Islanders should get starting QB Darnell
Arceneaux & TE/DE Morrie Roe back next week...Mike Tillis, w/no college
experience has done a commendable job @ QB/WR the last two weeks, though...

Speaking of Bobby Hebert, his son Ricky has been just about great the last
two seasons since replacing #1 NFL draft pick flop, Andre Ware @ QB for
Arkansas, who beat Hawai'i yesterday...And Ricky is only 22!..Shades of his old
man in the USFL in spring '83 w/the legendary Michigan Panthers, for those that
    can remember back that far...(Que Barbaridad!)...Anyway, it's the 20th
anniversary yr. since the USFL kicked off in '83...

There's a convention planned somewhere, my mate Ken Saroka told me earlier this
yr...I recalculated - I've been to 13 Hall of Fames...Jay Gruden was red hot in
the 1st quarter yesterday in the Preds semi-final playoff
game v. Tampa but the pass rush made him go cold in the 2nd half
yesterday...Still a great season! Way to go Preds!

In addition, OL/DL, Thaddeus Bullard will also be released from the Greensboro

          Bullard

Show in Honolulu, Period...How about Nian Taylor's 6 TDs for Islanders in
their impressive win over Mickey's Louisville Fire...

Taylor, in his 2nd yr. w/ Islanders used to play here in Virginia w/ the Speed
of Richmond...Grrrrr!!!...Shades of Nate Ilaoa, who played H.S ball for North
Stafford High in VHSL... Scott Baxter, the man, covers VHSL for the Pilot-less/Alleged
Star, the atrocious rag that calls itself
a newspaper here in town...Can't believe Channel 10 actually had something
on T.V. about the Nighthawks last night!..It figures they do after they
lose!...*Quad City is ineligible for playoffs in 2003." Moose
