ArenaCup 8 which I said I felt would be the best ever was. There was an
attendance of 12,109, which is an ArenaCup record there in Bossier City's
CenturyTel Arena. More about the game; QB Ryan Vena threw an all-time high 7 TDs.
Game Balls:
1) Tulsa DB Delenell Reid.
2) Tulsa DB Jermaine Hope.
3) Tulsa DB Don McGee.
4) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton QB Ryan Vena
5) Tulsa Coach Mitch Allner and Support Staffer Allison Webb, the prettiest
girl in Oklahoma!
Condolences to the family of ex-Toronto Phantoms player / Green Bay Ast. Coach
Kerry Brown who was killed in a single car accident on July 31st. G. Bay was in
the playoffs at the time and I can't think of a more distracting thing than
losing an Ast. Coach or player then. R.I.P.
Grand Rapids QB Chad Salisbury has retired. He posted real good numbers in his
eight Indoor Pro seasons: Passing for 11, 981 yds., 215 TDs. In the NCAAs
Sailsibury, who also played for the Toronto Phantoms (and Georgia Force, Chicago
Rush, New England Seawolves, and Columbus Destroyers) passed for 4,314 yds., and
31 TDs between the New Mexico St. Lobos and University of Buffalo. Salisbury who
is 30 says it is just time to call it a career. Thanks for the good play, Chad.
Speaking of the Rampage, they have a new H.Coach in Steve Thonn (pronounce it 'Tawn').
Steve Coached Houston for four years, 1998-2001, and was last year's Georgia
Force Offencive Coordinator.
Expect the Iowa Barnstormers and Peoria Pirates back in Af2 next year, but
Austin, which played Arena 1 the last four yrs., may relocate. No word yet on
Larry Csonka's Anchorage, AK or the Flutie Bros., Boston, MA teams yet.
F/A QB Clint Dolezel has resigned with the Dallas Desperados for two more years.
Aside form winning another ArenaBowl, Clint says he also wants to throw for
1,000 TDs. Don't bet against the the long tall Texan doing it!
There is still chance that Brian Urlacher's New Mexico team will be in the Af2
next year and expect two more teams in Arena 1 with Austin's adication to 'AAA'
Af2.
The award for Af2 Offencive player of the year is Wilkes-Barre's QB Ryan Vena
who should be back in the 'Bigs', Arena 1 next year with more expansion on the
way.
Two 'AAA' teams, the Wyoming Cavalry and Lexington Horsemen are coming out with
DVDs soon and I've got my order in! But two UIF teams have folded; West
Virginia's Ohio Valley Greyhounds and Evansville IN Bluecats (that's a fish
folkes!)." Moose Salzer

Green Bay 37, Louisville 27
Shreveport-Bossier City 50, Rio Grande Valley 45
Last night in Tulsa at the Tulsa, OK Convention Centre Arena: Talons whip South
Georgia and ruin a great season: The Tulsa Talons had apprehensions, but not
many of them coming into last nights game v. the always tough for them South
(Albany) Georgia Wildcats, who used to call Fayetteville, N.C. home. Coach
Darryl Stingley and Offencive Coordinator Rickey Foggie, the longtime ex-CFL/Ar.FL
QB, who now serves as So. Ga. Offencive Coordinator and Ast. Rick Leidecker had
turned the team around from two striaght 3-13-0 performances into this year's
11-5-0 squad that beat Tulsa in the last regular seaon game, July 28th by 16
points.
Things started badly for the Talons as QB Josh Allgood (would you believe
halfgood?) threw a real bad INT to South Georgia's Matt Jackson. It was the
first of tow INTs he threw on the night. South Georgia scored on the next play
on Chavis McCollister's 1-yd run. Scott Hode, who split the K
chores with International-born K Byoungwoo Yoon (Korea) made the first PAT. The
two teams traded scores until South Georgia QB Dee Bryant threw his first of
three INTs on the night. Tulsa's Delenell Reid, the ADT Defencive player of the
game, got the first pick. LB Zac Jones and Jeff Hughler, who also chipped in 111
yds., on 8 catches and 51 more on KRs and was named the Ironman of the game, got
the other two INTs for Tulsa.
The Talons won, 49-28 and are now 16-2 on the season. There are now no more Ties
in Af2. Teams play until they win. First score must be watched.
Game Balls to:
1) Tulsa LB/WR/FB Zac Jones
2) Tulsa LB C.J. McLain (formerly with Arkansas, remember Talon fans?)
3) Tulsa TE-OLm Antwan Floyd
4) Shreveport-Bossier City QB Quincy Carter
5) Green Bay Blizzard - whole team for being the only one of four squads left
to go back to the Conference Final game for the second year in a row!
National Conference Final Pick:
Tulsa Talons (16-2) OVER Shreveport-Bossier City (13-4) by six
American Conference Final Pick:
Green Bay Blizzard (12-6) OVER Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (16-2) by 1 O.T.
Many thanks to give out this week for the Tulsa hospitality: The lovely Allison
Webb, KC of Clear Channel number 86 here in Tulsa, DJ Supremo, Jeana Hogan, Kyle
Thornton, Chance Reed, Tulsa Owner Henry Primeaux and all the great Security
people and fans of Tulsa and the cab drivers for getting me to the game and back
to my Hotel in one piece! I didn't get to Tulsa until 3:38 p.m. from Saint Louis
and the Hotel shuttle was very quick. I had to shower, change clothes, get to
the Arena, pick up my Media sticker (yes, they have those here in OK) and I
spent the rest of the game at the North goal line. As you can imagine, I have
seen Af2/
Ar.FL games all over the country and in Toronto as well (!) the last fews
decades and all Arenas have different configurations. In Sioux Falls the weekend
before they had areas to stand for credentialed people. I liked this weeks game
and deal better, but the game in Sioux Falls was better, Sioux Falls 62,
Lexington 59. Or was that two weeks ago? 'On the road again, just can't wait to
get on the road again...' I can hear 'ole Willie now.
Oh, before I get off of the Arena2, all of us here at Sirius want to wish Dave
Wlaker the injured South Georgia Wildcat OLm the best. With about 14.5 seconds
left he left with the aid of the South Georgia trainers with what looked like a
bad ACL or MCL injury to his right knee. He'll have all off season to recoup
though. Hope to see him back next year." Moose Salzer

CFL - Af2 / Indoor Pro Connection Update: Ben Sankey and Tony Stallings.
Ben Sankey won the M.V.P. of the Af2 League and Tony 'Tigerman' Stallings won
the Offensive Player of the Year awards here at the recent Af2 Player Awards
deal. Both play for the Lexington Horsemen. In the UIF league, the following
Players won Awards: Doug Daniels Rockford Raptors, Special Teams Player of
the Year,
James Walton, Bloomington Extreme, Most Improved Player, Rookie of the
Year, Mo Abdulqadir, RiverCity (MO) Rage, Defensive Player of the Year
Ryan Palmer, Fort Collins (CO), Man of the Year, Derek Kutz, RiverCity Rage.
Sioux Falls Arena (1-605-332-4225) will be the sight of today's playoff game
between Lexington and Sioux Falls and the Storm have a Indoor Pro Footy record
37 straight wins between the Af2/UIF/NIFL going.
Af2's Quad City Steamwheelers have a 37 game record winning streak back in
2000-2001. If the Storm win today, they'll have 38 wins in-a-row. Matchups: QBs
Eddie Eviston/Ben Sankey v. Storm's Terreance Bryant. Stu Whitney and Matt
Zimmer will cover the game locally and have been a big help. Also: Rapid City,
which used to have a NIFL team will be getting a UIF team and a hocky club in
the Central league next year. Good luck to that great City! The Central Hockey
league has 17 teams in nine states - so far. They play for the President's Cup,
which I saw up close in the now defunct Memphis Xplorers office there while
covering a game in 2003 for MYKwebTV. Ar.FL Transactions lately: Orlando:
Re-signed OL Justin Cleveland, Philadelphia: Re-signed DL Gabe Nyenhuis and
Waived DL Bobby Setzer to Georgia. Las Vegas: Re-signed DL Chris Eggleston, San
Jose: Released DL Tim Duckworth; he WILL get an ArenaBowl Championship ring
however." Moose Salzer

Af2 Report from the Birmingham v. Florida game!
Saturday night I attended the Birmingham Steeldogs v. Florida Firecats game in
Birmingham, Alabama. Friday I had one of those great days on two planes when not
only did I get earlier flights from Norfolk, Virginia to Atlanta but also from
Atlanta to Birmingham. Walking down the three blocks from my Hotel, the Tutwiler
to the Sports Complex in Birmingham, I took a 'wrong' turn and ended up at the
Alabama Sports Hall of Fame first, instead of the Steeldogs Office. Which was
OK. I was soaking wet as the clouds opened up, which was good for the State of
Alabama as much in a drought as back here in Virginia. I met Mr. Bill Legg, the
Curator of the Alabama Sports Hall first. He looked just like on the video from
NFL FILMS that Richard Saint Marche sent me back in March. The first order of
business there was to find the 1974 World Bowl trophy that the Birmingham
Americans won by beating Jack Pardee's Orlando Florida Balzers, Dec. 5th, 1974.
Mr. Legg also directed me to the Super Bowl XXV chrystal goblet, the only one
made for the Super Bowls as both teams, Buffalo and Dallas had Alabama players
on their active rosters. I got pictures of both these which I hope turn out
so I can have Myk post them here on here. Mr.
Legg
also showed me a great video of
11 minutes (I didn't have time for the 19 minute one) and I looked around for a
while longer before exchanging cards with him and heading over to the Steeldogs
Office on the other side of the Complex by Birmingham-Jefferson Arena. The first
person I met was Media Guru Brandon Gresham and 'Number One Intern' as Paul
liked to be called.
I
picked up my VIP/Media pass and chatted all things Arenaball until we were all
exhausted. I went back to the Hotel and spent the evening reading up on
everything I got and listening to the Birmingham Barons 'AA' baseball team
(Michael Jordan's old baseball club) v. Jacksonville on the radio. The next day
I went walkabout to find a Saturday paper (at a black run Hotel down the street)
and returned in time for the breakfast buffet. I watched both Ar.FL Conference
Championship games (Columbus won the National, and San Jose the American titles)
then headed down the road to the Arena on 19th street and Richard Jefferson
Arrington Jr., Blvd. I entered the first door I saw people at and with my Media
pass started to the press Box / Media Room.
I
met V.P. Dave Coffey who also does broadcasting (Man, these Arena teams are run
efficiently) and one of the Owners, Scott Myers, who I had met in the
Office the day before. Heading down to the field to get a few pics, I
noticed on the roster the name of Jaden Volchoff, former Saint Mary's Huskies
two time Vanier Cup vet, now playing for the OL on Birmingham. When the first
team was down practicing, I called him over, told him who I was and gave him one
of our cards. It turns out his dad, Terry, from Dundas, Ontario was there that
night and had also seen Jay play v. Cincinnati in Ohio and also at
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in Pennsylvania as well this season. I spent most of the
game watching taking notes and chatting to Terry who invited me up to their five
bedroom house near the peak, down the road from Hamilton.
The Game: Birmingham ostensibly NEEDED this one badly, having lost five games,
mostly close ones, in a row. They lead Florida 23-21 at the half. But thing
broke loose badly for the Steeldogs (who's mascot is named 'Rusty') in the first
two drives of the second half. Birmingham scored first on a recovery (one play
later) of an onside kick attempt by Florida. Then the wheels fell off the wagon
for the Steeldogs. Two consecutive fumbles that Florida scored TDs off of left
to a lead that Birmingham never recovered from.
In all Florida QB Chris Wallace found six year favorite receiver Boris 'Majik'
Benton for four of his six TDs. Birmingham lost three DBs with injuries in the
game though Dave Philyaw came back late in the fourth quarter. The final score
was Florida 55, Birmingham 44. Bradley Chavez, one of seven ex-University of
Alabama at Birmingham players on the roster lead the Steeldogs with 12 catches
for 145 yards and three TDs. Marcus Mitchell (FB-TE/LB) and WR/DB Herman Bell,
an ex-CFL'er lead the Steeldogs in
fumbles with 1.5 each. After the game in speaking to the press Birmingham
Coach Ron Selesky said he couldn't figure these players out as they were the
most fumble prone team he's ever Coached. I agree, unfortunately. Better luck in
the next two game, Steeldogs.
The
UIFL Indoor Bowl III.
Former Hawai'i QB Shawn Withy-Allen probably playing in his last Pro game lead
the Fayetteville Guard, formerly of Af2 to a 48-34 win over the previously
undefeated Wyoming Calvary also formerly of the Af2. Withy-Allen was named MVP
of the Finals for the second year in a row. Mercahndies for the Guard's
Indoor Footy Championship can be purchased from Wendy at: 1-910-578-7183 at

original one before the NFL replaced it with the 35 lb., globe of the NFL Europa
Championship (now defunct). Then over to the office of the Steeldogs to pick up
a Media guide and game day pass. The Alabama Steeldogs -Florida Firecats rivalry
is the oldest in Af2's short history, going back to when the league kicked off
in 2000.

This Week in the UIF: Only three weeks remain in the regular season and teams
are jockeying for playoff positions. Sioux Falls has home-field advantage in the
Western Conference with Billings, Colorado and Omaha in, but seeds two
through three to be determined. Billings is on a seven-game win streak and
currently in second place in the West, but plays its remaining three games on
the road. Speaking of Billings...they hook up with River City for the second
week in-a-row in the home-and-home series this time at the Family Arena in St.
Charles, MO. As Billings is in the West, RiverCity is in second place in the
Eastern Conference.
Rock River at 9-4 is in the playoffs. RiverCity at 7-5 is a half-game ahead of
7-6 Lexington. Bloomington got back to .500 and sits in fourth place with
a 6-6 record. Evansville at 4-8 needs to finish strong. They could lose
one of their remaining three games and still get in, but would need some
help along the way. Casey's All-Star Classic Update: Another national sponsor
has signed on as a presenting sponsor.
Allegiant Air becomes the Official Airline of the UIF All-Star Classic and will
also hand out the Allegiant Air All-Star MVP Award to the most valuable player
in the league's first showcase between the top players in the Western Conference
and the Eastern Conference. Individual tickets are now on sale for the Casey's
All-Star Classic game. Tickets have been allotted for each UIF team and fans are
encouraged to contact their local team for tickets and check into bus trips. All
others can contact the U.S. Cellular Coliseum box office Monday through Friday

It looks like Green Bay, Arkansas, Central Valley and Quad City are definitel
headed back to the playoffs. I will be in Birmingham, Alabama for the July 14th
Grudge Match v. their old rivals the Florida Firecats, who also no doubt will be
in the thick of the ArenaCup race. I really miss the Richmond Speed who made the
ArenaCup in it's second year here in '01, even though their Coach Rich Davis is
an Alien life form! I'm sure he believes in (D)evolution! The Nighthawks were
our favorites here and I am sure some Roanoke fans miss their former Steam.
Also on tap for the seemingly never ending 'Economy with Dignity' World Sports
Tour are the ArenaBowl XXI in rejuvenated New Orlean, July 28th-29th and
ArenaCup8, in Shreveport-Bossier City again after playing in '06 in Puerto Rico.
Af2 Media Guru Marc Lestinsky, who has me first on the Media Credentials list
for Aug 24th-25th, has correctly stated that the ArenaBowl and ArenaCup(s) games
are for the first time in the same state, Louisiana. I am seeing more
commercials for the state of Louisiana then ever before. I am happy for the
'Sportsman's Paradise' to be returning to normal. Other games are of course the
standards like the Grey (& Vanier) Cup(s) in Toronto, Ontario and maybe an UIFL

You read right, above. Quincy Carter went 'walkabout' for two days missing

club. No reason as of yet has been given by the ex-NFL/CFL player for his
actions. How this might effect the Bossier Battlewings, who are 5-1-0 and on top
of their respective Division is unknown. Craig Strickland, who passed for
22,000+ all-time leading yds., in six star studed Af2 season, including winning
the Tulsa Talons the ArenaCup4 back in '03, may be in some trouble keeping his
record. Bakersfield's fourth year QB Chad Elliot, who is in his fifth Af2

News From
United Indoor Football - May 16, 2007 WEEK EIGHT
After this weekend, the
regular season will be over the half-way point. Last weekend, the Sioux Falls
Storm handled the Sioux City Bandits enroute to their 27th consecutive win. That
mark ties them with the Ohio Valley Greyhounds for second most consecutive wins
in football in any Af2 type league, behind the Quad City Steemwheelers who won
29 straight before falling at Wichita in 2001. The Storm look to break the
record. Omaha, in the meantime, came through on their guaranteed Mother's Day
victory.
The Eastern
Conference tightened up last
weekend. Rock River beat Lexington to pull even with the Horsmen. Ohio
Valley beat RiverCity, putting Rock River and Lexington just a half-game back of
RiverCity. Players of the Week: OFFENSIVE Rock River Raptors' RB Patrick
Hall II carried the ball 19 times for 73 yards and three touchdowns against the
Lexington Horsemen. His longest run was 28 yards. He also grabbed six catches
for 25 yards and one TD. DEFENSIVE Ohio Valley Greyhounds DE/LB Jeffery Chandler
is this year's first unanimous choice for Player of the Week. Against the
RiverCity Rage he tallied 8.5 total tackles, six solos, five assists, 2.5
tackles for loss for 32 yards, one sack and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
SPECIAL TEAMS Ohio Valley Greyhounds DB Durell Preston returned six kickoffs for
111 yards, averaging 18.5 yards per return. His longest return was 27 yards.

Week Seven Summary
In week seven, the Ice were unable to dethrone another unbeaten, Dusty Burk and
James Walton proved again why the other UIF teams should be concerned with their
surge and in Rockford, IL, the claws left the hounds screaming.
BLOOMINGTON 49, RIVERCITY 23 St. Charles, MO Muhammad Abdulqaadir put the Rage
on top by six in the first, but the Extreme answered with a seven yard pass from
Dusty Burk to Glenn Johnson and two one-yard runs by Burk with the latter coming
in the second. Rage kicker Derek Kutz then brought the score to 20-9 with 5:33
left in the half. The Extreme then went on a four score run consisting of a
field goal and three TDs, with the first at 2:02 left in half and the last at
14:05 left in the fourth. Burk finished 15-21 with four passing TDs and had
nine rushes for two TDs. James Walton finished with seven catches for 103
yards and three TDs. The Extreme have a bye this week and the Rage will visit
the (1-5) Ohio Valley Greyhounds Saturday. Bloomington's play-by-play announcer
Greg Halblieb recaps the story.
SIOUX FALLS 49, COLORADO ICE 20 Loveland, CO Defense wins championships, and
the Storm got into the backfield in this one, sacking Matt Guitterrez six times
and Ryan Clement two times. Leif Murphy led the Storm with 3.5 sacks. He also
had 7.5 tackles. The Ice were 0-6 on third-down conversions, 0-3 on fourth-down
conversions and just 1-4 in the red zone. Marques Smith carried the ball 13
times for 67 yards and four touchdowns. The Storm will meet the (2-4) Sioux
City Bandits at home on Saturday, while the Ice will battle the (1-4) Billings
Outlaws on the road Friday.
SIOUX CITY 36, OMAHA BEEF 29 Sioux City, IA Craig Fobbe spread the ball around
to three different receivers on three touchdown passes, hitting Ronnie Thomas,
Sean Henley, and Rashaun Sanders. Early in the fourth, Ronnie Thomas caught his
TD pass making the score 29-14 Bandits. The Beef then scored on two straight
with James McNear connecting with Jamar Day and then running in for one himself,
bringing the score to 29-29 after R.J. Rollins ran in for two extra. With 2:49
left in regulation, Fobbe connected with Henley for what would be a 23-yard game
winning TD. The (2-4) Evansville Bluecats will visit the Omaha Beef on Sunday
and the Bandits will visit the (6-0) Storm on Saturday.
ROCK RIVER 50, OHIO VALLEY 25 Rockford, IL Just as it was in Colorado, defense
was a huge part in Rockford. Anthony Harris had two sacks, while his Raptors
teammates Darius Jones, Nick Zeck, and Maurice Simpkins each had one. Ben
Sankey threw five touchdowns, going 16-24 for 186 yards. Anthony Overstreet and
Jeremiah Thompson each caught two from Sankey and Lawrence Bady caught one.
Another key contributor to the Greyhounds defeat was the 16 penalties totaling
106 yards. Greyhounds quarterback Freddy Ray ended 20-42 for 196 yards and
three TDs. The Greyhounds will host the (5-2) RiverCity Rage, and the Raptors
will visit the (4-2) Lexington Horsemen Saturday. Raptors' play-by-play man
Andy Gannon filed the recap.

As we head into week five, two teams have goose eggs in the right spot while
three teams wish to get rid of them. The River City Rage and Sioux Falls
Storm remain unbeaten at 4-0 while the Billings Outlaws, Bloomington Extreme and
Sioux City Bandits are all seeking their first wins. River City gets a test
Saturday night when they host the Rock River Raptors (2-1). The Raptors
have come on strong after a week one loss to Sioux Falls. After opening the
season with four straight road games, Sioux Falls will host Billings with a sold
out crowd.
The Storm narrowly escaped Billings with a 52-49 OT win in week two. Bloomington
will host the offensive powerhouse Lexington Horsemen, the Evansville BlueCats
entertain the Sioux City Bandits and Colorado hosts Omaha in a rematch of week
two when the Beef won 31-20. All games have 7:05 p.m. Saturday kickoffs.

UIF Week Three Preview.
Omaha, NE – With three teams undefeated, Rockford (2-0), Sioux Falls
(2-0), and Omaha (2-0), who will come out of week three with a perfect
record and who will drop their first game of the season? Will Billings be able
to pick up that evasive first win of the season? STORM (2-0) at BANDITS (0-1)
One of three undefeated teams, the Storm come into week three with the third
best quarterback in yards/game in Terrance Bryant, who is averaging 179 yds/g. Allen
Burrell had 111 yards on seven catches last week and could be a huge threat this
week. One game into the season, the Bandits have had an interesting week, as
H.Coach Richard Britt resigned and Assistant Coach Roger
Jansen was named I.Head Coach. Defensively for the Bandits, they need to shut
down the open style of play the Storm will use.
Kickoff is Friday night, 7:05 p.m. at the Tyson Events Center Gateway Arena. ICE
(1-1) at RAGE (2-0) Defense, Defense, Defense; the Ice are going to have to be
on top of their game in this one. Rage running back Mo Abdulqaadir is averaging
67.5 yds/g. The only RB with a higher mark is Eugene Reed from the Ice who’s
averaging 76.5. The Ice will also need to control wide receivers Curtis Chinn
and Moses Regular who have a combined 273 yards, second only to the tandem of
Lawrence Bady and Jeremiah Thompson (ROC).
Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. Saturday at Family Arena in St. Charles, MO. EXTREME
(0-1) at GREYHOUNDS (0-2) A week ago, the Extreme scored only three touchdowns
in a 20-53 loss against the Raptors. The key for the Extreme will be offense, as
they only totaled 85 yards in week two. The Greyhounds should come to attack the
Extreme with defensive back Stephan Agyeman and lineman Leon Moore. Kickoff is
set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, WV.
BLUECATS (1-1) at HORSEMEN (1-1) If the BlueCats offensive can’t beat the
Horsemen, then they’ll have to turn to kicker Tony Luzayadio and a defense tied
for third in scoring defense. The Horsemen lost a nailbiter in week two by
throwing an interception during overtime against the Rage. Offensively, the
Horsemen rank second in pass offense with 192 yds/g. The Horsemen will have to
bring their run defense and pass defense, as the Bluecats are ranked first in
both offensive categories.
It’s a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Adolph Rupp Arena. BEEF (2-0) at OUTLAWS
(0-2) Omaha looks to cook the Outlaws, as the Outlaws look
to steal a victory Resurrection Day Sunday. The Beef had a strong defensive
showing in week two from Chris Eads and three-way player Fran Johnson. Mike
Nizzi and Lawrence Pullen will both need big games for the Beef offense. The
Outlaws have never lost three games in a row, and if the offensive chemistry
shows, then that will hold true. In week two, Chris Dixon was money, passing
23-32 for 233 yards and four TDs, while he also ran for three. Chemistry between
Dixon and his receivers will be key as will possession time for the Outlaws.
Easter Sunday brings a 4
p.m. kickoff in Billings." MG - UIF league."

They should be a real thorn in the side of their Texas opponents and with the
Dorados on the slide (despite the gorgeous South Texas cheerleaders they have!),
their is room for one more team from the all-texas division to sneak into the
playoffs. It'll be Lubbock. Predicted Finish: Second, 10-6-0.
Texas (Katy)
Copperheads.
Fifth year. Coach: Bryan
Blake. QBs: Tony Eckert, Will Burch (?). Other Key Players: OL/DLm: Matthew
Beeler, Henry McMichael, Robby Walker, WR/LBs: Obrey Minor, Lloyd Tate, Miquel
Toulin, K Nick Gatto, one of the greatest competitors in Pro Football in the
last twenty-five years, DB Josh McMillion and S/OE John Whitehead. The outlook,
aside from the great kicking of Gatto and fine Coaching of Blake could depend on
these guys getting more talent of the vet status from other Af2, NFL E and CFL
teams (American guys of course) after those other leagues do their final cuts.
Texas will struggle for a while this spring as they get acclimated to the Af2.
They were very good several seasons in the NIFL but that's 'AA' Indoor 'ball.
Blake will have these guys fightin' for second or third place in the all-texas
division but they will not finish higher than 8-8-0 this year, which would
be very respectable. Gatto is real profile in courage who should be an
inspiration to his teammates as he tries to get back up into the 'Bigs'.
Rio Grande
Valley Dorados.
Fifth year. Another year
of mucho talent drain! Coach, until he loses his mind, Gary Gussman and Assoc.
Kevin Guy, both former Ar.FL players and Coaches. Veteran players who may make
all the difference; FB/LBs: Frank Henson, Kee Washington, WR/DBs: Tory Joubert,
Dan Kegler, Josh Leonard (No College), Ronnie Thomas and Randell Lewis. OL/DL
Jimmi Henson (no relation to Frank), Dan Tuiono, Ryan Pahua, Tolifili Liufau,
three kanakas who will start up front and LB Lono Manners, former University of
Hawai'i S-OLB. Outlook: With all the new teams coming into the Af2 from other
leagues, especially into Texas in the all Texas division, one team will suffer
the most in talent drain. It could very well be Rio Grande Valley. The team that
is backed by the Killerbees Hockey team is just not quite there yet to make the
strong playoff runs it did the last couple years, though studs like Manners,
Liufau and Pahua will help big-time. The Defence will be anchored by them and
Tuiono will have to start on OL as well. If they can get off to big start, they
could hold off the Katy Copperheads and Corpus Christ Sharks. But it'll a
struggle to get by Lubbock and Laredo. Predicted Finish: 9-7-0, playoffs will
depend on how they do v. other Texas teams.
Oklahoma City
Yard Dawgz.
Fourth year. Playoffs
three times before. Coach: Jeff Jarnigan, former Skip Foster Assistant on the
'03 ArenaCup4 Champ Tulsa Talons. QBs: Stan Hill, Jared Romo, Dallas Tony
Romo's brother. Other Key Players: FB/LBs: Aaron Chavers, Alan Krutulis, WR/DBs:
Danny Howard, Al Hunt, Carlos Johnson, and Fred Shaw [The deepest ever WR group
of vets in Af2 history!], OL/DLm: Cluade Davis, Barry Gillus, Drew Mitchell, DS:
Walt Preistley and Jon Holland. There seems to be nothing missing from this
powerhouse team that continually locks horns with the equally powerful Tulsa
Talons every year. But something will probably keep them from making the
ArenaCup and it may just be the balance of power in this league going to
California and Texas in terms of shear numbers of players and teams. Expect the
Yard Dawgz to rack up another winning season for owners Barry Switzer and Horn
Chen (Eegads! What a combo, pistol-packin' Barry and Horny Chen, who along with
the Gleiberment ruined the 88-year old Ottawa Rough Riders of the CFL back in
the mid-1990's) . Predicted Finish: 11-5.
Tulsa Talons.
7th year. Coach: David
Alexander, 3rd year. QBs: Retired: Craig Strickland, 21,000+ Af2 passing yards,
all-time leader and former Talon and Yard Dawgz pivot. New QBs: Justin Allgood,
Josh Balnkenship. Other Key Players: DS Jermaine Hope, WR Zac Jones, WR/LB
Jermaine Landrum and K Luke Phillips. There are no returning OLm for the first
time and since the DL no longer have to play Offence, there could be trouble
brewing with Josh McMillian's retirement. This once proud team has the best TV
show since the Islander's weekly that used to be shown in O'ahu when Alema and
Tau Harrington were on Ocean Cable 39 Time Warner Hawai'i Sports when I was
there to cover two games back in '04 (Islanders, r.i.p.). The Talons have a
great talent pool to recruit from and a great organization, so they still have
an even-steven chance of getting back to the ArenaCup playoffs once again. But
that'll come down to the Best Rivalry in Af2, 'The War on I-44', between them
and the Yard Dawgz of OK City. May the best 'Dawgz' win! Predicted Finish:
10-5-1.
Tri-Cities
Fever.
5th year (first in Af2,
formerly in NIFL). Coach: Tony Welles. QBs: Brian Baker, Tali Ena, the two
biggest QBs this side of Jared Lorenzen! Other Key vet players: Vichael Fox, OL/DL,
Raschard Dodd-Masters, WR, ArenaCup vet Robert Garth, TE/OL/FB, DB Jamie Hattley,
Mac Tuiaea, DL (from CFL's B.C.Lions), K Wes Virgilio, OS J.R Thomas, FB/SLB Leroy
Thomas. Another team absorbed from the 'AA' NIFL who are getting their feet wet
in the 'Below-the-Ar.FL' "bigs" [note little 'b']. Coach Welles, another ex-Ar.FL
player (and NFL E as well) will have his hands full trying to keep pace with the
other Af2 team from Indiana, the Fort Wayne Fusion. At least the Fever have a
better logo, not that that'll win 'Em any more games. Tuiaea will be a
stud as he tries to get back to the CFL and one of the Moose-ish QBs should be
close to leading the Af2 in rushing. They could have tried to get a more
polished Indoor Pro QB like a Shawn Keal'i' Withy-Allen- type but we'll see how
they do. A 6-9-1 or 7-9-0 season would be very respectable. Garht should have
stayed in Green Bay!
Tennessee
Valley (AL) Vipers.
6th year, also spent one
year in NIFL as Raptors. 0-1 in ArenaCups ('00). Coach: Milt Theodosatos
(hardest name this side of Zbydniewski to spell or pronounce in Af2!) QBs:
Jeremey Clements, Tony Colston and Dontavious McDowell, who will probably have
to play WR/LB or DB/KR. Other Key Players: OL/LB Kem Oti, DLm Calvin Ousby, OL
Earnest Jones, K Steve Lee. About the only thing to say to Coach Theodosados is
good luck! With this crew he'll need it. Dave Clark, promoter of the Leuchter
report many years ago, can't decide as owner if he wants to stay in Indoor Pro
Footy or not and doesn't have many vet for poor old Milt to run this club on the
field with. Milt will be lucky to survive the season with his job unless Colston
comes through big time at QB. Losing big ole' Lineman Andre Slappy back to
Florida will really hurt come playoff time if they are close. If they can keep
the scores down as low as possible on Defence, they have a shot at the post
season, but I doubt it. Predicted order of finish: 6-10-0." Moose Salzer

Central Valley (CA) Coyotes
5th year. Coaching Staff: H.Coach Fred Biletnikoff, Jr., Derrick Chachere, Aaron
Veland, Brent Prible. QBs: Brian Luke (R), Clay Groefsema. Other Key Players:
Donyll Booker, Doug Langenfield, Damien Walker, DLm. Rookie Corey Brannon, OLm:
Sean Finnerty, Dartangnon Shack, Sikiti Uipi. K Greg Kuehn, William and Mary
College here in VA., WRs: Maurice Bryant (6 yr. Pro), TE/FB Marquell Stinson.
Last year things were going pretty much according to script, when the Coyotes
had their 13-5-0 season ended by an expansion team in the playoffs.
They are back and will settle for nothing short of their first Championship
appearance, as long as Mr. Injury doesn't stop them. They have the best Coaching
staff in Af2 and return no less than 8 players to the starting lineup. The
Defence may be a concern with many new faces to Indoor Pro Football. The Big
Brother Arena Football League usually raids this club of talent but don't bet
against Coach Biletnikoff, son of the ex-NFL/CFL Hall of Fame WR of the same
name, getting these guys to the title game this time! Predicted Finish:
ArenaCup8 Champions!
Everett Hawks.
2nd year. ArenaCup
Champions. Coach (first year) Cedric Walker, a 10-year
Ar.FL player at DB-LB who was a Co-Cpt'n on the Arizona Rattlers Arena World
Championship team. Gone is Coach Ricky Foggie to another Af2 team and the staff
around Walker seems kinda thin, though former Ar.FL-Af2/Scotland-NFL E star,
Steve Papin has as much experience as does Walker. They need about 3 more
assistants though. Key players: QB Jason Campbell (not from the r'skins), and
Ben Bowling, who should start again. This team was hit almost as hard as the
Spokane Shock in the offseason with losing talent to higher leagues. The CFL
even took several of their players. WR/DB Milt Myers (No college) is the type of
player that epitomizes this league. A tailbuster and worker who WILL
succeed. Linemen Asora Tuia'ana, Zeigler Kai and Taliafaia Atoe start up front.
The Defence could be the real achilles heal for these guys as they have a
murderous schedule to start the year with games like going to Central Valley
Easter (Resurrection Day) weekend. LaMonte Jones and FB/LB Vai Notoa, once of
the Hawai'i Islanders three best players (with Shawn Withy-Allen and Andy Ramos)
will be a big boost to this club. Predicted Finish: Fourth in the Division,
6-9-1, no playoffs.
Green Bay
Blizzar.
Fifth year. 2006
ArenaCup7 Runner-up. Coach: Bob Landsee. Ast.H.Coach/ Offencive Coordinator-QB
Coach Mark Stout flew the coop to Laredo's Lobos, another new Texas expansion
Af2 team. QBs: Lost Jim McPherson to third string with the Ar.FL Georgia Force.
New QBs: Zeke Dixon and Ryan Hawk, of THE Ohio St.'s brother to Green Bay Packer
LB A.J. Hawk, who should have been the NFL's Rookie of the Year. At least they
play in the same town. DBs: Chris Cole, Randy Drew, Robert Mays are vets and K
Dal Pelz is first rate. Special Teams will be special despite some lost talent
to the
Ar.FL. Offence has several good young FBs to work with, but losing Lazare to K.C.
of the Ar.FL hurts. Landsee has his hands full replacing the vets they lost but
he is real good Coach and new guys like: Virginia Union's FB/DE Tyson Gustavus
will help a bunch. Predicted Finish: 10-5-1, second in the East.
Bloomington Extreme.
3rd year; second in UIF. The Bloomington/Normal, IL area supported last year's
expansion team very well. The Bloomington Extreme finished 5-10-0 but H.Coach
Ted Schmitz (father of the former Ar.FL K) says they played hard and thinks the
fans appreciated it. Those fans will appreciate what Schmitz' staff and team
bring to the turf this year. The staff has 143 years
of coaching experience, but it was the one year of experience in the league that
gave Schmitz an idea of how to put together a UIF team. "Last year we made a
mistake, we went with all speed," Schmitz said.
"We think you have to be very physical. We found that out last year. So what we
look for is not just speed, but (now) we're looking for athletes that are quick
and very physical. Schmitz says they know the game better. "We're going to be
more run-oriented than we were a year ago." Signing Rocky Harvey should bolster
the run game. Harvey was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten running back for the
University of Illinois and played for Fort Wayne [now of Af2] the past two UIF
seasons. In the meantime, the Extreme return 20 players including quarterback
Dusty Burk and kicker Peter Christafilakos.
From early training camp accounts, the talent is showing. Joel Fellers wrote on
pantagraph.com, "Rocky Harvey showed
his speed, Dusty Burk hit WRs coming out of a number of formations and there was
plenty of hard hitting going on as the Bloomington Extreme took the Hancock
Stadium turf for the
first full-contact practice of training camp Saturday in Normal." In the
same story, Extreme General Manager, Jerry McBurney, says, "(The team is)
light-years ahead of where we were at this time last year. I think the important
thing is we have more depth this year.
We got hurt with three injuries in one quarter with our receiving corps, and we
made sure that we have the depth to take care of that this year if it happens
again." Schmitz knows he still has to throw the ball, but expects a lot more
balanced offensive attack. "We're not going to be just a run-and-gun team and
use our back as a blocker; we're going to use him as an offensive weapon," he
said. For offensive line improvements, the Extreme added another former Fort
Wayne player, Jamarkus Gorman, 6'5, 340 lbs. They also tabbed 3 rookies
former Illinois State player
Janiah Downing, 6-3, 310 lbs, Jim Davis, 6-2,
275 lbs from Knox College and former professional basketball players Adam
Grubbs, 6-5, 325 lbs. Along with coaching experience, a bolstered running game,
20 returnees and greater depth at most positions, the Extreme get the benefit of
an extra week of preparation.
Week One is a BYE for Bloomington. They open the season at home against the
Rockford Raptors. Kickoff at U.S. Cellular Coliseum is 7:35 p.m., Friday, March
30. Additionally, Illinois State University has been on spring break this first
week of training camp, making it easy to schedule practices at the Normal
facility. Predicted Finish: Second in the Division. - UIF/MG " Moose

Sioux Falls Storm.
Eighth year. Three UIF, Three NIFL, One IFL. Winner of back-to-back United Bowl
Championships. Their regular season begins Friday night with Billings at
Colorado. Saturday night's match ups include Omaha at Sioux City, Sioux Falls at
Rockford, River City at Evansville and Lexington at Ohio Valley. Enjoy the UIF
season. The Sioux Falls Storm come into the 2007 season riding a 20-game winning
streak and back-to-back United Bowl Championships. United Bowl II MVP QB
Terrance Bryant will lead the Storm offense as he enters his third season team.
United Bowl I MVP, K Adam Hicks is back as well.
The Storm benefit by bringing back several years of experience and some top
local college standouts. Defensive back Shannon Poppinga returns for his eighth
season of indoor football, all of which have been played for Sioux Falls. He’s
team leader in career interceptions with 31 picks and ranks 2nd in UIF history
with 16. Another defensive leader, Andre Fields, is back for year five with the
Storm.
G.M.-Team President, Colin Steen, says, “Andre is a lock down cornerback and
really understands the indoor game and our complex defensive scheme. We expect
him to start again for us this upcoming season and continue to add to his legacy
as a Storm player.” Trice Crump rejoins Poppinga and Fields on defense. He’ll be
in a Storm jersey for a fourth year. He’s held down a starting spot for Sioux
Falls the past three seasons. Trades don’t happen often in the UIF, but Sioux
Falls acquired defensive end Leif Murphy in a trade with Omaha during the off
season. The Storm will send future considerations to the Beef in the deal.
Murphy enters his fifth season of Pro ('AAA') Indoor football and has spent time
in the Canadian Football League, as an Outdoor Pro as well. He was an All-UIF
selection in 2005 and 2006 with Omaha. Steen says, “Leif is a tremendous
addition to our defensive unit…” Allen Burrell spent his previous two years
with Omaha as a wide receiver. He was recently in camp with the Arena Football
League Champion Chicago Rush. Besides a great football career, Burrell was a
six-time North Central Conference outdoor track and field champion in college.
On the subject of good college talent, the Storm didn’t have to look too far to
add to the roster.
University of Sioux Falls record-breaking wide receiver Dusty Havorka and
offensive lineman Zach Campbell come to a championship team after being on a
championship team. Havorka was a three-time All-American and is the only receive
in USF history to record over 1,000 yards as a freshman, sophomore, junior and
senior. He set a USF single season record for receiving touchdowns, scoring 19
times on the way to an NAIA national championship. Campell earned all-conference
honors the past two seasons.
Storm Head Coach, Kurtiss Riggs, knows them well. Riggs also serves as
Quarterbacks Coach for USF. With the two United Bowl titles and the NAIA
championship, Riggs was part of three national championships in a 17-month
span. In the trenches, offensive linemen Ya’Tarrie Brown and CJ Sanderson come
to Storm after both started all 15 games last year with the Peoria Rough Riders.
They’ve been together awhile. They anchored the offensive line together at
Concordia-St.Paul during their college days. On the defensive front Roy Williams
has re-signed. He played in 14 games for Sioux Falls last year compiling 23.5
tackles and three sacks.
In 2004 he was in mini camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prior to his
professional career, Williams was a standout at the University of Central
Florida. If the Storm plan a three-peat, the road will be tough—literally. They
open with four road games including Saturday night in Rockford, IL against the
Rockford Raptors. The Storm’s first home game is April 21 against the Billings
Outlaws at the Sioux Falls Arena. Predicted Finish: United Bowl Three-peat
Champions. UIF-MG.
Sioux City Bandits.
4th season (One in the UIF; One in IFL). The Sioux City Bandits are another UIF
team with a new coach. While many teams like to equate a new coach being equal
to a new attitude, Sioux City might be the epitome of that philosophy. Rich
Britt loves the indoor football game. His attitude about the game is that is
should be fast. Or as he said in an earlier interview on the league web cast
“This Week in the UIF” when asked what a Rich Britt team is all about,
“Speed—bottom line.”
The Bandits tabbed the Washington, DC native in earlier December to be Head
Coach/Defensive Coordinator. He brings five years of indoor football experience
to Sioux City. Bandits General Manager/Managing Partner, Bob Scott, had this to
say, “Richard has a lot of experience in indoor football, which was a major
factor in our decision to hire him. We had a lot of interest in the job but
really felt we needed a coach with a track record to get the Bandits back to
where we were in 2005.
He complements our coaching staff and will do the job that management and our
fans want to see year in and out from the Bandits.” The rest of the Bandits
coaching staff looks familiar, though one jumps to the other side of the ball.
Tom Luxford will be back for his third season, but now takes over as Offensive
Coordinator. When he coordinated the defense, they were among UIF leaders in
2005 and 2006. Luxford is a former head coach at Laurel Concord High School in
Laurel, NE where he had a 23-2
record in 1994-95 and was 79-59 overall. Roger Jansen is the head coach of Sioux
City Bishop Heelen High School—a perennial Iowa high school playoff team.
Jansen will be with the Bandits for a fifth season coaching the offensive and
defensive lines. Pat Arens will be in charge of the defensive backs. This will
be his second season as a Bandits assistant coach. He played his high school
ball for Luxford. The coaches aren’t the only ones with local flavor for the
Bandits. A dozen players on the Bandits roster are from regional colleges and
universities including seven from Sioux City’s Morningside College.
Regardless where the players come from, Britt looks to have them better their
football careers and themselves. “I’m looking for athletes, guys who understand
that this is a stepping stone for them, that they’re coming in to hopefully get
themselves to the next level.” Besides speed, Britt says when he looks at film
he’s looking to make sure the players know their responsibilities. Look for a
very fast defense and a very strong defense from Britt’s Bandits. Linebacker
Spetlar Tonga is back along with safety John Zevenbergen. Tonga led Sioux City
with 86.5 tackles last season white Zevenbergen set a team record with eight
interceptions. Jordan Van Otterloo played high school football in nearby LeMars,
IA and college ball at nearby Northwestern College in Orange City, IA. The NAIA
All-American was signed from a tryout camp. “He deserved an opportunity to come
back in March,” said Britt.
Britt’s contacts provided him the talent from outside the region for some big
signings. Originally an Oklahoma University recruit, Brent Rawls transferred to
Louisiana Tech before getting starting his pro career with Britt at
Shreveport-Bossier City, of Af2. Britt says Rawls, “will bring leadership and
stability to the QB position…”
The Bandits start the season with three straight home games. The March 24th
opener has them facing the Omaha Beef at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.
Predicted Finish: Last in Western Division. UIF - MG.
Ohio Valley (WV) Grayhounds
9th Year. Two UIF, 7 NIFL; Three time NIFL Champions.
This year it’s a new coach for the Ohio Valley Greyhounds. Lou Stein purchased
the 'Hounds, last year, (off E-bay!) to keep the team in Wheeling, WV. Stein is
no longer a rookie owner and Head Coach Ervin Bryson is anything but a rookie.
Stein introduced Bryson at a news conference in early January ending a nearly
two-month search. “He has a great passion and love for the game of indoor
football and that was very important to me,” Stein was quoted in the Wheeling
News Register.
The Greyhounds make for Bryson’s sixth coaching role under the roof, giving
Stein what he wanted—extensive experience. Perhaps it was fate. When Bryson was
head coach, in the NIFL, in '02, his team played in Wheeling. “I can remember
leaving the building that night and thinking that I’d like to coach here
someday,” he said in the same News Register story. Bryson will also spend time
assisting in the operations of Ohio Valley. Bryson looks to return Ohio Valley
to its glory days of national championships and looks to do so with potent
passing and a grind-it-out ground game he feels confident can put a lot of
points on the board.
The 'Hounds will be led by Martins Ferry, OH native Freddy Ray at QB. Ray had a
stellar career at Martins Ferry High School and Ohio University before getting a
couple of years of indoor QB experience. His targets include returning receivers
Willie Austin and Darrell Dowery. “We are expecting the passing game to pick up
right where Matt Kohn and the Hound passing attack left off in the 2006 season,”
Bryson said.
“Freddy’s speed, quick release, his ability to scramble and the talented wide
receiving corps we are assembling will continue to give us a potent passing
attack.” Bryson adds Ray needed only a couple of days to grasp the offense. A
return to the running game is a main focus for Bryson this season. To accomplish
that, he has what he feels are three quality running backs: Western Kentucky’s
Keith Brooks, 5’11, 225 lbs; Charles Pearson, 5’11, 225 lbs; Nick Romain, 6’1,
250 lbs. With an affection for the Greyhounds history, Bryson says this
about the running backs, “We are pleased with the talent we are bringing in to
re-establish the ground game that the 'Hounds have been famous for in the past.
"We know how important a dominant running attack is to open up the passing game,
wear down your opponents and control the tempo of the game…” Bryson feels the
team could potentially put up 70-80 points a game. Defensively, Bryson expects
up front pressure by Appalachian State’s Leon Moore, 6’3, 265 lbs. Defensive
back Durrell Preston started for Bryson last season in another league and hauled
in six interceptions. Home Greyhound games at WesBanco Arena this season will be
preceded by either high school or college lacrosse games. Greyhound ticket
holders may take in the lacrosse game free of charge. Lacrosse matches take
place from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Fans may then watch both UIF teams warm-up prior
to the 7:05 p.m. kickoffs. Ohio Valley opens the regular season at home,
Saturday, March 24 against their conference rival the Lexington
Horsemen. Predicted Finish: Second in their Conference in 2007, second round
playoff loss. UIF-MG.

Af2 Previews contd! Today is the 4th installment of 13 previews.
Quad City Steamwheelers.
8th season. 2-0 in the ArenaCup Championship. Coaches to watch: H. Coach Sean
Ponder, Line C. Ed Flanagan. QBs: Matt Pike (6th yr.), J.J. Raternik (2nd yr.),
Other Key Players: OL/DL Kika Kaulula'au
(4th yr; former Hawai'i Islanders), Hausia Faleofa fb/lb,
WR/DB Kris Peters, DB Leo Fenceroy (4th yr.) The
Steamwheelers, no longer the exclusive property of Jim Foster, JR., the now-part
time owner and founder and inventor of Arena Football are taking a different
route to the playoffs this year; simplicity. They no longer really scare anybody
in this league as 'The Team'. In days gone by, they could throw that blue, red
and gold emblemed helmet on the hockey-football turf and that was that. 8 times
out of ten it was a win. With new Coach Ponder and mate Ed Flanagan, a former
part owner of the San Diego Riptide, the Coaches are keeping less entrenched
players and going with a mostly new squad, save for Flint Flemming, who will be
more of a Coach at age forty (!) and QB
Pike, dreds and all. Gone are KR Travis Burns to retirement and Coach Rick
Frazier back to the Ar.FL, as well as K Nick Gatto, who is playing for a first
year squad in Texas. Expect the Steamwheelers
to still make the playoffs and cause a ruckus when it comes down to brass tacks
in the second round. Predicted finish: Second round playoff appearance but a
loss to Arkansas or Louisville.
Fort Wayne (IN) Fusion
Their logo looks like a bloodshot eye, or a spermball
of some kind! First year in AF2 but formerly of the 'AA'
NIFL. General Manager: former Norfolk Nighthawk Mike
McCarthy, once our Af2 team Media guide, who got the job later of the last Arena
League Indiana entry, the formerly Albany Firebirds. Coach: Eddie 'Downtown/TD'
Brown. [Actually BOTH(!) Ed Browns, the former Ar.FL
and CFL ones are on the staff] QB: R.J. Harvey. Other Key Players:
OL/DLm:Colin Christopher, Robert Denton,
Eze Ejelenu, Lou Vega. FB/LBs: Runsununguko Sunungura,
Rodney Wormley, WR/DBs: Cesare Manning, Melvin Parris (who can also play LB) and
K Douglas Daniels.
Outlook: Moving up! With a good front office, but questionable Coaching (vulgar
Ed Brown - parents, cover your kids ears!), but moving up from the moribund
NIFL, these guys could be quite a team - in three or four years. The Offence
will be down right, well, Offencive ! But the Defence, except for Sunungura,
will stink up the joint for the first half of the season with all the rooks and
non-Indoor footy types. Special Teams will be, well, not Special enough, yet but
expect these guys to pick of the pace (not Tom!), in the second half. They could
lead the league in attendence, for
Af2 teams formerly of the NIFL. Precited Finish: 7-9-0
would a respectable start.
Florida Firecats.
8th season. 1-1 in ArenaCups. Coach: Kevin Bous, a former Af2 player. Liken him
a lot to Kansas City's Chris Siegfried. QBs: Former
Orlando Predator and Norfolk Nighthawk Chris Wallace who is 1-1 in ArenaCups.
Other Key Players: Brent Burnside, Boris (Majik) Benton, Chris McKinney, the
most experienced receiving corps in Af2. The Line: Antonio Dingle, 4th year, NFL
E vet and formerly of the University of Virginia, Keith Drayton of Georgia and
Lamonte Jackson. LBs: Alfred Peterson, Fred Solomaon, Ethinec Sands. Other QB
Darren Haliburton, unless he gets corrupted by Dick Cheney. But then he doesn't
go hunting, so he should be OK.
Outlook: These guys ARE ALWAYS contenders and have been in two of the last five
ArenaCups. Only old age can probably stop them. There are six guys here over 30!
That's old for Af2. But they are winners. I say one more big run before they go
out. Predicted Finish: ArenaCup runners up. Why Wallace hasn't stuck in the
Arena League is beyond me!" Moose Salzer

Rockford Raptors.
Second year. Last
year, as the Rockriver (Rockford, IL) Raptors captured the
United Indoor Football Central Division title. That’s when the league was
divided into three divisions. This year, UIF is split into two conferences. The
Raptors are in the Eastern Conference with the Bloomington (IL) Extreme,
Evansville BlueCats, RiverCity (St. Charles, MO) Rage, Ohio Valley (Wheeling,
WV) Greyhounds and Lexington Horsemen.
While repeating as division champs can’t happen, capturing the Eastern
Conference title won’t be an easy task. Yet it’s a task the organization looks
to accomplish. Lowe Entertainment and Raptors President, Tom Crow feels the team
ended strong last year and will start strong this year. The Raptors have been
judicious in getting their roster ready for Saturday’s opener against the
two-time defending UIF champion Sioux Falls Storm. By 11:59 p.m. CDT Thursday
they need to be down to the league mandated 30-man roster; 21 will dress for the
game. Mike DeDocker of the Rockford Register Star quoted Raptors Head Coach, Rik
Richards, on some of the moves. “We cut (Orlando) Doc Gooden, who is obviously
qualified as a guy who was all-conference in college twice with over 100
tackles, but he just couldn’t play down in the dirt,” Raptors coach Rick
Richards said. “In college, he did not play in a 3-4 where the linebackers
walked up and played down, so we kept Maurice (Simpkins) because he can play
down and up.” Defensively Rock River has Gene Janke and former Peoria Rough
Riders linebacker Blue Aldridge have solidified roster spots.
Offensively, Richards likens the next few days to college. “We have to put in
everything but the kitchen sink in the next few days,” he told the Rockford
Register-Star. “It’s a
cram session just like you’re in college again trying to prepare for a test.
This is all the study time now, so we can be ready for whatever they throw at
us.” Speaking of college, the Raptors borrowed a page from the NCAA basketball
playbook. They opened training camp with Midnight Madness. Crow says they
received “great press” from the event with television news stations doing live
reports and keeping cameras on-site throughout the practice. It also played well
to loyal Raptors fans. Two former local high school football standouts were
signed by Rock River after a second tryout. Ronnie Brown and Brandon Wogomon had
participated in November tryouts, but weren’t signed until after the January
tryouts. University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse quarterback Shane Adler was signed
following the November camp. Other Raptors signings include defensive lineman
Floyd Wright and wide receiver Jeremiah Thompson. Wright played the final two
years of his collegiate career at Marshall University. Thompson returns to the
Raptors for his second season.
He finished last season with a team-high 68 receptions, good for 568 yards and
14 touchdowns. Versatile wide receiver Stafford Owens looks to be a welcome
addition. The Ohio University product caught 42 balls in his college career for
507 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 969 yards and seven
touchdowns. Additionally, he accumulated 713 yards on 64 returns, three for
touchdowns. “I look forward to having Stafford around on a more consistent
basis, and with his versatility I hope to help him move to the next level of his
football career,” Richards said. Predicted Finish: 3rd Place.

Af2 Previews contd! Today is the 2nd installment of 13 previews.
Laredo Lobos.
Expansion team. Coach:
Mark Stout [formerly of the Toronto Phantoms, Manchester Wolves and Green Bay
Blizzard]. Other Key Players:OL/DLm: Sabree Anderson, Ray Rancrass, Rorie Tyris
and Rich Pope. K Jon Scifries, who's brother plays H/P for the hardluck San
Diego Chargers, FB/LBs: Rich Sanders, Dean Littleton, Josh Chilsom, WR/DBs: Ed
Giddings, Mike McCallum, LaRon Ragsdale, Torrey Prather, Dayrl Shaw and Jamal
Lundy, grandson of the recently late, Lamar. Outlook: Nowhere to go but up for
the expansion Lobos, skippered by vet Coach Stout, who has plenty H. & Ast.
Coaching experience from both Indoor Pro Arena Leagues. They seem a bit
top-heavy at WR and need to get some LBs, but training camp has been looking
good so far. This team picks up back with a good fanbase that once rooted for
ex-USFL'r Kiki DeAyala's former Laredo Law. The owner could've saved some money
by goign with another
Indoor League, but chose to upgrade and go with the Af2 ('The Cadillac of Indoor
'AAA' leagues', he says). Stout is one of the best Af2 Coaches and last year the
Green Bay Blizzard went to the ArenaCup Championship with his Offence and lost
several players to the Arena League. Stout is just staying in the game until his
next Arena League H.Coaching gig. Predicted Finish: A respectable 8-8-0 and
maybe, just maybe, Mark Stout for the Af2 Coach of the Year!
Billings
Outlaws.
Team won NIFL title last
year. First year in UIF. Preview: UIF season
Previews continue. The United Indoor Football league welcomes another champion
to the league this year. The Billings Outlaws won a national championship
in another league in 2006 and bring a 15-game winning streak with them to the
UIF. Outlaws Head Coach, Heron ONeal, is impressed with how the UIF is
organized compared to other leagues hes been a part of. He also likes the
quality of UIF teams. Every team is good. You look at the league last year
and the last place team could almost beat a first place team (from the NIFL).
That puts you on your Ps and Qs. As a coach you want to be judged and
appreciated on when you win something and that it means something instead of
winning and (some will say) yea, but look at the teams you played. O'Neal
feels it's going to be a great season for the entire league.
The Outlaws open on the road at Colorado, v. the Ice, Friday, March 23rd. The 7
p.m. MDT game at the Budweiser Events Center will be the first UIF game to
kickoff since the rest of Week One games are scheduled for Saturday, March 24th.
Billings and Colorado look to be natural rivals be- cause of the geography. It's
definitely going to be a big game for us, O'Neal said. He adds that if you don't
win against the team you're closest too on the map, it's tough to get the better
talent from that region. Thanks to last season's championship, O'Neal
hasn't had to worry much about recruiting. If anything, he had to turn some away
since there were lots of players knocking on his door looking to join a
championship team. O'Neal looks for players with mental toughness,
especially. Sometimes (a player)
could be physically the toughest guy to walk down the street, but not mentally
tough. I always look for guys who can react and think quick because I'd rather
have a guy that runs a 4.7 (40-yard dash) but he thinks quick than a guy that
runs a 4.3 and doesn't (think quickly) because the guy running the 4.3 is
running the wrong direction most of the time, not reading the things he's
supposed to read.
This will be O'Neal's second season heading up the Outlaws. Fonz Jefferson joins
him as Assistant Coach and Bill Briggs joins the team as Offensive
Coordinator. As Billings Gazette Sports Editor, Mike Zimmer, wrote about the
Outlaws entering the season, As they look to the future, the Billings Outlaws
are taking a page out of their past, in reference to wide receiver Jason
Quinn and defensive end Andy Petek returning. Quinn, 6'2, 215 lbs., has 149
touchdown catches in his seven-year indoor football career. Petek is a former
University of Montana standout. Leon Moore, a 65, 285 lb Defencive end, spent
last spring in the Miami Dolphins Mini-camp. Other returning veterans include
quarterback Chris Dixon and lineman Anthony Bonner. Defensively, Travis
The King Salter returns for another season of action. While this will be the
Outlaws first year in the UIF, they will be renewing some past rivalries with
Sioux City, Sioux Falls and Omaha as well as RiverCity." UIF - MG
Fayetteville
Guard.
Fourth season, formerly
in Af2. Coach: Ex-Norfolk Nighthawk FB/LB Charles Gunnings. Ast. Coach/QB Shawn
Withy-Allen, fourth season, 5,000+ indoor passing yards, 137 TDs, 600+ rushing
yards (? There is some question whether he'll even come back from HI to the
mainland this year. He is
Ast.Coach-Offence for Evangel College in TX in the offseason.) Players to keep
an eye on: QB Joe Davis, DL Ben Witcher, OL Ward Jeremy, OL Clinton Witcher,
DL/TE Doug Waller. It remains to be seen how much difference Gunnings CAN make
without Withy-Allen, who has missions work to do (Call him 'Father Withy'), and
was an NCAA Ast. Coach last year. If Gunnings can get WR Jamie Deese back
or FB #33, who lead this league in rushing last year (with Withy-Allen 3rd). I
imagine Coach 'Gunz' will get everything he can out of these devil (small 'd')
dawgz [not Oklahoma City either!]. Predicted Finish: 8-8-0, but higher if
Withy-Allen plays / Coaches here.
Spokane Shock.
Second Year. Runner up in
ArenaCup last year. Coach: Ricky Foggie (former CFL/Ar.FL QB). QB: Kevin Feterik.
Other Key (?) Players: A. J. Keys, OL/LB, Matt Storm (making a comeback after
retiring from the ArenaBowl Champ Orlando Preds back in early '01), OL/DLm, FB/LB
Talbert Michaels, WR/DB Rich Washington, FB/DE Mario Young. Gone are almost all
the vets from last year's Af2 runner-up team. In comes Foggie to replace Chris
Siegfried who left to take over the Kansas City Brigade's Offencive Coordinator
spot in the Ar.FL. All I can say is good luck, Coach Foggs! It'll be a long
season. Predicted Finish: 0-16-0, maybe one win. Storm better bring some real
experience to the O-Line. That won't be enough!
Memphis
Xplorers.
Fifth year. Won ArenaCup6
in Shreveport-Bossier City in '05. Coach: Ron Lopaz. QB: Joe Velazquez. Other
Key Players: FB/LB Kimm Washington, DS Donte Williams, DB Antwone Young, DS Dave
Shell, TE/DL John Williams, FB-KS/TE Matt Walters, WR/DB Ken Williams, WR Jayson
Williams, LB/S Jah Wilson. Outlook: These guys almost decided to take the year
off in Af2 'One-year dormancy'. San Diego did that last year, but joined the
'AA' NIFL at the last moment this spring. The Xplorers almost start from scratch
with a rookie Coach and players with no Indoor Pro experience from any of the
six (!) different leagues that in the US now. I can't see these guys winning
many games this year without Mike Jones at QB and Danton Barto at Coach (both
gone to the Big Brother Arena Football League and Las Vegas this year. Predicted
Finish: Last in the Southeast Division.

Alabama Steeldogs.
8th Year. (New name; used to be known as 'Birmingham' Steeldogs the last seven
seasons. One of only 11 original Af2 teams left from
the origins of the league in '00) Coach: Ron Selesky (formerly H.Coach of the
Buffalo Destroyers and Carolina Cobras of the Ar.FL).QBs:Mitch Tanney, Robert
Kent, Maurice Mullins (one of these guys may have to play WR/KR-DB). Other
Key Players: TE/DL Clif Browning, TE/DE Dave Daniel, OL/DL Deon Deboise, K Nick
Hayes, DS Byron Hughley, LB Tyus Jackson, OS Kenny Johnson, FB/LB Rayon Miles,
WR/LB Mareno Philyaw, OL/DLm: Eric Thomas, Erik Scott, Myron Powe. Outlook: Gone
are longtime Coach, ex-NFL RB (Denver/Miami) Bobby Humphrey and in came Selesky,
who brought a tougher more concise outlook, last year.
Also gone is the name 'Birmingham Steeldogs'. It was sort of dicey to rename
themselves 'Alabama' - it's not like they are the only team in the League with
that name. There's their cross state rivals, the Tennessee Valley Vipers, back
last year in the 'AAA's after one year in the 'AA' NIFL. They too play at Werner
Von Braun Centre Arena, in Huntsville, Alabama. This should make for a nice
rivalry again in the state. With so many NCAA scholls to draw players from,
there's plenty of talent around. I expect the Steeldogs to make the playoffs and
win one or two games since they have so many vet Af2 and other Indoor footy
players. Predicted Finish: 10-6-0.
Albany Conquest.
5th year. Four playoff appearances. Coach: Pete Costanza. QBs: Daniel Cole, Rayn
Hart, Joe Micco. Other vet players: Bakari Brown, WR, FB/LB Jose Harris, Marc
Hickok, K, Paul Jefferson, FB/LB, Antwun Williams, WR. Outlook: Vet
Arena-Af2 Assist Coach, Af2 Coach Costanza (Norfolk Night-hawks, Iowa
Barnstormers, Columbus Destroyers) team is at a crossroads. With almost all of
their veteran Lineman now up in the
Ar.FL, this team will rebuild with rookies on the Line. Will it be enough? Will
it come in time? Coach is a good Offencive mind, despite being fired several
times, but he may need to trade one or more of the pivots to get some help for
his Line - and Special Teams, where second year K Hickok still holds the fort.
They have a rough schedule, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a run
to the playoffs - as long as one of the QBs stays healthy and starts most of the
year. Expect them to finish around 9-7-0 for the playoffs.
Arkansas Twisters.
8th year. Seven playoff appearances. Coach: Ex-CFL Grey Cup two-time winner John
Gregory. QBs: Brain Villanueva, Davon Vinson, Orrick Watkins. Other key players:
K Dave Carlson, FB/LB Reg Cooley, FB/DE Jimi Holden, TE/LB Ray Goodson, WR
Robert Kilow, WR/LB Kevin Williams, OL/DLm Wesley Thibeaux. Outlook: Coach John
Gregory has guided several teams to Championships in the Ar.FL and CFL and
has two Championship rings to show for it. He'll guide the Twisters for the
third consecutive season, and do with a heavy heart as longtime ex-Iowa
Barnstormer / Twister Defencive Coordinator Art Haege just died at aged 69 last
month. Haege sure belongs in the Ar.FL Hall-of-Fame. He was one of the best
Coaches in Indoor Pro Football history. His son, Frank even Coached in the Af2/Ar.FL,
winning .670% of his games. Frank now takes his dad's place.
At QB, three players have exactly 1 year of Indoor Pro experience between them,
as vet Walt Church has hung it up, this time for good. Williams, Jake Brown and
Walt McCown are solid Receivers and Holden and Colley give the Twisters one for
the best ground games Indoors. It's of course up to the Defence, now under new
leadership to help these guys advance, like what DIDN'T happen
last year in the playoffs. The Special Teams is getting a bit
inexperienced as well. Expect Coach John's team to be in the thick of things
down the stretch, if they stay healthy and one of the new pivots develops in
Gregory's 'User Friendly' system. Predicted Finish: 11-4-1, ArenaCup8
contenders." Moose Salzer

Af2 team previews contd from

Colorado Ice
Expansion Team. Coach:
Collin Sanders. QB: Ryan Clement. More about Clement and the rest of the key
players: Collin Sanders knows it will be difficult to put together a winner in
the team’s first year of operation, but he says, “We’re going to give it a
shot.” Sanders knows about putting together a brand new team. This will be
Sanders’ fifth indoor expansion team to head up. Coaching the Ice allows him to
shed his self-proclaimed nomad status and be with his family. When asked about
long-term success in the Northern Colorado area during a Jan. 28 interview with
the Coloradoan, Sanders said, “It certainly helps to have a winner.
If you can truly tell people you’re going to be respectable, then people are
going to go ahead and give you an opportunity to be respectable, and they’re
going to come on out and support you. We think we’re going to be able to do well
in year one and our ultimate goal is to win the whole thing. We need to be
respectable on the field and qualify for the playoffs, which I think we can do.”
While Sanders is impressed with the talent league-wide, he had no shortage of
talent to choose from in tryouts with nearly 250 athletes competing for a
training camp slot.
Quarterback Ryan Clement of the University of Miami was a notable signing.
Clement was a 30-game starter for the ‘Canes and has NFL Europe and XFL
experience under the belt. He’ll be protected by a local product. Offensive
lineman Gary Moore, 6’7, 330 lbs., was a two-year starter at the University of
Colorado. Sanders has several players from Colorado State, CU and the University
of Northern Colorado on the roster. He also pulled from the University of
Wyoming and several smaller colleges in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
“You do your homework, you make some good contacts with the local colleges and
you can’t be afraid to get the smaller school guys,” Sanders said during a This
Week in the UIF web cast earlier this year. No matter where the talent comes
from, Sanders is more concerned about how they fit together. “There’s a lot of
talent running around out there, but talent that can fit together in a cohesive
framework and then have the chemistry to create a winning situation, is really
what’s probably the most difficult,” he added in the Coloradoan interview.
The Ice play an exhibition game Thursday, March 15, 7:05 p.m. at the Budweiser
Events Center against the Denver Titans, the defending five-time Colorado
Football Conference Champions. They will host a “Break the Ice Party” as a
chance for fans to meet and greet the players that coincides with the game. With
the exception of VIP seating, tickets are $8. Groups of 50 or more pay $5 a
seat. Profits from the event go to a charity to be named at a later date.
“Giving back to the community is a major part of a professional sports team,
especially in Northern Colorado,” said General Manager, John Cribari in the
Windsor Beacon. “The Colorado Eagles (hockey) are our tenant partners at the
Budweiser Events Center and we plan to follow their lead in giving back to
Northern Colorado.” The inaugural season home opener is 7:05 p.m. March 23 when
the Ice host the Billings Outlaws. UIF-MG" Mike Girard

Canton Legends (Defending two-time Champions),
Carolina Speed, Danville (IL) Demolition, Freeport (IL) Freeze, Florence
Phantoms, Huntington Heroes, Johnstown Riverhawks, Lakeland Thunderbolts,
Mississippi Mudcats, Montgomery (AL) Bears, Reading (PA) Express.
"Outlook: I would be inclined to like the Baltimore Blackbirds, but after they
got whomped 78-6 in their inaugural game, I don't think I would be able to
pencil them in as Gold Cup contenders! It'll probably be the Canton (OH) Legends
once again in the third year of this Indoor 'A' league [note small 'l']. The
only player in this league with previous NFL experience for example is
the DE-LB-LS of the Blackbirds (Thanks Leo C. "Flagman" Dodge for the heads up
on Joe Maese, who played five years and in 63 games as a longsnapper for the
Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions). One team, Johnson used to be in the NIFL
('AA') and Richmond and Roanoke have gone under. Lakeland is from the UIFL. Good
luck to all twelve teams going 'for the Gold (Cup)' as they say, in 2007. Best
of luck to Maese of the Blackbirds as he trys to get back into a higher league."

Shreveport-Bossier City Battlewings.
Sixth Year. One playoff appearance. New H.Coach: Jon Norris, the
first former welsh born NFL player (New England / Chicago, 4 seasons in the
'80's). QBs: Quincy Carter (Dallas-New York Jets and CFL), Gary Cooper (not the
'High Noon' guy). Other Key players: FB/LBs: Jason
Shule, Charlie Myles, Patrick Craig. WR/LBs: Marc Bacote, Manwell Talbert. WR/DBs:
(Yo) Adrian Burnette, Brandon Campbell, Anthony Chambers. K Brian Hazelwood.
Outlook: Gone is former Coach, homegrown former Saint-NFL QB Johnny
Fourcade. In comes Norris to right this ship. Owner Dan Newman made good on his
promise to refund the patrons, on season tix last year is they didn't make
the playoffs.
Despite the talent here last ano, they didn't come close. With another
5-11-0 finish, Fourcade cashed in his chips when the season was done and
moved on. Getting the man of another attempted comeback, Carter (as well as
Grambling QB Cooper) will help sell tickets and give this team hope like it
hasn't had so far in their history. Another thing hurting
this team last year was not having the ArenaCup7 game back in the CenturyTel
Arena like the year before. With the Katrina recovering NFL Saints having a
Monday night Preseason game in town (they played one game here also in '05), the
League decided to take up Puerto Rico Tourisms offer to hold the game in San
Juan P.R. last August '06. A good move.
The game drew more fans than it did in Shreveport-Bossier City the year before.
Back to the Battlewings, crazier things have happened but I look for this team
to be a monster under Norris simply because with all his Indoor and Outdoor Pro
Football experience and the talent assembled they should have no trouble winning
at least 10 or 11 games and not only making the playoffs, but giving Arkansas
and Florida a run for their Southern money! Predicted Finish: a berth in
ArenaCup8!
Cincinnati Jungle Kats.
Expansion team. Coach: Tony Missick, formerly the Norfolk
Nighthawk Coach (8-8-0 in '02) and a former Ar.FL player (Saint Louis, '95-'96).
QBs: Ryan Porter. Other Key Players, 6th year Indoor Pro DS Desmond Washington
(Norfolk/Roanoke/Florida, two ArenaCup appearances), WR Brian Haywood, OL/DLm:
Floyd Black, Jarvis Davis, Steven Dukes, Kamau Jackson, Jamr Neely, Luke
Scarborough. WR/DBs: Hassan Brockman, Phillip Goodman, Kareem Larrimore, Reggie
Perkins. Hail the new Jungle 'Kats' of Cincinnati. The last Af2 representative
here in town was the short-lived Cincinnati Swarm.
The other occupants in the 'hood have been the mediocre "AA" Marshals of the
NIFL. This team should have no problem making them obsolete. With an experienced
hand at the controls like the still young enough to be here for many years to
come, Missick, and vet players like Black, Washington, Jackson and a good young
pivot in Porter, these guys should win at least 10 games this year. They are in
a competitive division but they should be the best expansion team in the
League right away. Predicted Finish: 10-6-0, one playoff win. Missick a serious
candidate for Coach of the Year.
Boise Burn.
Expansion Team. Coach: Lee Leslie. QBs: former CFL/NFL E Bart
Hendricks, Casey Rehrer. Other Key Players: WR/LBs: Casey Allen, Jason Murray,
Emmett White. WR/DBs: Chris Bruhn, Chris Christopher, Tim Gilligan (not from
some Island), OL/DLm: Joe Critchfield, Jess Hernandez, Scott Lee, John
Neddo, Siofia Vave (HI) and Robert Vian. FB/LB Derek
Beardall, Perry Jackson, Kameron Merritt. K Dan Beardall. Outlook: Not bad.
Hendricks who was a lukewarm QB with both the CFL's
Edmonton Eskimos (0-1 in one start, reserve for two seasons, one Grey Cup ring)
& the Frankfurt Galaxy in the NFL "AAA's", should adjust well to the Indoor Pro
game. He was plenty of big FBs bvehind him and enough speed on the corners
with Christopher, Jackson and Merritt.
On the Defencive side of the ball, Beardall, the lineman, Vian and Vave have
size, moves and the right bone crunching attitude. Brandon Hazenburg should be
the best LB. In the D-secondary, Tyler Preston, Murray and Jared Durden should
probably start. Kicking will be handled by the other
Beardall, Dan. Predicted Finish: If hometown guy Hendricks gets the indoor
game quick enough, they are in good position to make a run at at least making
the playoffs. But for them to contend for ArenaCup8 as an expansion team, like
forget it! Playoffs, maybe, 8-7-1or 9-7-0 would be a very respectable start.
Corpus Christi Sharks.
First year (formerly of NIFL - "AA"). Coach: Mike Trigg, formerly
of the Philadelphia Soul, Grand Rapids Rampage and Milwaukee Mustangs
of the Ar.FL, 1-0 in ArenaBowl, '01 - G.R. QB Chris Harrington. Other Key
Players: OL/DLm Earl Anderson, James Marvin, Justin Scott, Val Stinson. K Chris
Onorato, WR/DBs: Farrell Asbell (brother Troy used to play LB with
Saskatchewan in the CFL), William Heyward, Brandon Husy,
Donte King, LB Stephen Fillmore...more players to come. In getting Trigg, the
Sharks should have an advantage in terms of a 'new' Coach who is from Texas and
knows the Indoor Pro game.
Harrington, from nearby Graceland (not the tomb in Memphis!) shoudl benefit from
fast WRs like Hussey, Asbell and Robert Franklin. With the
rule changes across the boards in Arenaball and Af2, the
skys the limit on the quality of athletes that are in the League(s) now. Of the
new Texas teams, only Corpus Christi and the new bunch in Laredo, with new Coach
Mark Stout, formerly the Offencive Coordinator of ArenaCup7 runner-up Green Bay
and a former H.Coach with the Cape Fear Wildcats and Ar.FL's Toronto Phantoms,
look like contenders in their first year. Predicted Finish: Playoffs in first
Af2 season." Moose Salzer

Greatest Game in AF2 History + Arena - Indoor Football Update - More
Championship Results!" Moose Salzer
Louisville Fire v. Hawai'ian Islanders, July, 2004, Honolulu, Oah'u, HI.:
Scoring by Quarters:
Hawai'i 14 13 21 14 = 62
Louisville 14 17 14 14 = 59
Summary - Two of the best ever QBs in Af2 squared off for the most classic of
all Af2 games played in the short history of the Indoor 'AAA' Pro League.
Louisville's Matt Sauk and Hawai'i kanaka Shawn Ke'ali'i Withy-Allen [Kalaheo
H.S., North Shore] went toe-to-toe for 15 rounds and when the smoke cleared the
hometown Islanders came out with the win, 62-59. Another big star for Louisville
was Tony 'Tigerman' Stallings, formerly of the Calgary Stampeders who had 4
rushes for 49 yds., 4TDs and 4 catched for 8 more yds.
Withy-Allen and Sauk combined for 667 yds. passing [that's 1,334 outdoors!] and
Withy-Allen's 374 total yds. was an Islanders all-time record for the three year
franchise. Withy-Allen, who rushed for 2 TDs and passed for 5 more was Week 16
Player-of-the-week. He has since duplicated that feat for Fayetteville three
times since the Islanders went under as a franchise. Here are his Career stats
for three Indoor Pro Seasons:
Shawn Withy-Allen's Career Stats Af2:
Passing: /Rushing:
2006 Fayetteville 261- 181 - 65% - 1,859 - 48 - 5/ 46-170- 3.4 - 8

expansion 2007! Af2 ArenaCup7 Championship report!" Moose
'Alaska Wild', from Anchorage will play at the ECHL team, Aces Arena 'Mahoning
Valley (OH) Thunder'. Coached by 20-yr Ar.FL/Af2 vet, former player/Coach Mike
Hold, who announced the ArenaCup game from Puerto Rico.
Also 'Mississippi Headhunters', maybe in '07 or'08. Also, Owners of a group in
Winnipeg, who have been trying to get Arena dates at the still new Arena in
River City, for five years. Winnipeg would play in Western Division with Alaska,
Spokane, Everett Hawks, Stockton, CA, where 'Lil Kev F-Troop, re-re-retired.
They also just fired Coach Rich Davis, who was fired in Richmond, VA and Albany,
NY before also. May be two or three in Ar.FL next year and "at least three new
in Af2", according to Commissioner C. David Baker at halftime of the recent
Puerto Rico ArenaCup7.
They are lead by a 28.5 yr. old Owner! He was heard (though not seen) in the
second quarter. I got to go up there for a game! I AM going to order one of
their Championship game t-shirts, just like I said in my column last week! I
really did want Green Bay to win that game. They have so many ex-Toronto
Phantoms Coaches, and players and have gotten better every year. They are owned
by ex-G.Bay Packers LB Brian Noble a fine guy. Last year, when he retired after
mini-camp (back in '05) Doug
Pederson, H/2qb, Brett Favre's best friend suggested he and Brett buy into the
Af2 team, the 'Bizzard' [they have a furry snow man on the logo,
and Packers colours except the silver]. Brett balked and Pederson joined G.Bay
Packers staff as QB Coach. Then he and Coach from last year, Mike Sherman, now
Off. Coor. for the Texans, got fired when the team went 4-12-0 when Brett threw
a career high TWENTY-NINE INTs! He threw 20 the yr., before. That's 49 in two
yrs! I love Brett as a QB and competitor as much as anybody, but he's got to
hang it up soon. Hes' barely in my top 20 QBs anymore. Tom Brady is number 14
and Kurt Warner is number 15." Moose

ArenaCup7 Championship, Spokane 57, Green Bay 34!" Moose Salzer
Record Set: Most points in an ArenaCup half, 41, by Spokane, first half.
Game Summary. It started off like any other ArenaCup of the past six years (I've
only been to one before); two teams getting to the Championship game by
different means and tagging each other on the chin to feel each other out - at
first. Then a big play springs one team out in front of the other and the second
team has to try to play 'catch-up', the rest of the contest. A crucial
4th-and-goal stop by Rob Keefe and Dax Peau, on Green Bay QB Jim McPherson ended
up leading the EXPANSION (that's right, expansion!) Spokane Shock to a 57-34 win
over veteran fourth year club Green Bay. There was a real deja-vu feel to this
game as ex-Norfolk Nighthawk OL/DL Rico Ochoa, playing in his native Puerto Rico
captured his first Af2 title, with the rest of his teammates.
There was also a real ex-Toronto Phantom feel as Coaches Bob Landsee, H.Coach of
Green Bay, WR/DB Luke Leverson, who also played for Toronto, as well as Chicago
in the XFL in '01 and Ast.H.Coach/Offe.Coor. Mark Stout were all on the
sidelines for Green Bay. I am simply amazed at the Spokane Shock, run by a 28
and a half year old owner winning the ArenaCup in their first year!
Interviewed at halftime were Commissioner Dave Baker, Af2 Guru Jerry Kurz and
Game Founder Jim Foster, Jr. This game was shown Live on Comcast here in our
area (hope some of you got to see it) and the Puerto Rico fans were really into
it. About 9,000 were in attendance at the new Arena. At halftime the Award
winners for the 2006 Arena2 season were given their hardware as well. The
Commish said the game may well by there next year and I am planning on going if
possible.
Game Balls:
1) Chris Siegfried, Coach, Spokane
2) Robert Garth, TE-FB/LB, Green Bay
3) Rob Keefe, DS, Spokane
4) Kyle Rowley, QB, Spokane

Scores:

Week 20 Game Balls:

What?: ArenaCup North American 'AAA' Indoor Pro Football Championship: ArenaCup7
Preview: Arena Del Coliseo, Puerto Rico, Sat., Aug. 26th, 7 p.m., EST. Teams:
Green Bay Blizzard (12-6-0) v. expansion Spokane (WA) Shock (16-2-0). How they
got there: Green Bay beat Florida, 60-47 in Conference Final game; Spokane beat
Arkansas, 48-30 in other Conference Final. Preview, Spokane Shock: Lead by
former Cape Fear Wildcats (Fayetteville, N.C.) Coach and former original Af2
player, Chris Siegfried, the expansion Shock continue to roll on, amazingly
playing in the franchise first Championship game in their first year of
existence! They also lead the League in attendance.
On Defence, Siegfried's team is lead by DB/WR/KR Isiah Trufant, who's older
brother Marcus plays for the NFL Seattle Seahawks. On Offencive, the Shock were
the T2nd highest scoring machine in Af2 with 892 points in the regular
season. The club is lead by QB Kyle Rowley, who played backup for Green Bay last
year. Preview, Green Bay: This fourth year club is lead by second year Indoor
Pro QB Jim McPherson, who like this franchise, is in his second playoffs.
Last year he was the backup QB. McPherson's best target will be fourth year
Blizzard OS Brent Homes. Expect both to be up in the Ar.FL, or CFL next year.
The Blizzard's Defence was T3rd best in Af2 giving up only 719 points during the
2006 season. Don't laugh, for this League that's very good. It enabled a 10-6
team that started the year 1-2 to finish with a 10-6 mark and get one home field
playoff game. Homes has 9 TDs so far in the playoffs and it'll take everything
that the Shock have to stop McPherson to Homes this weekend in sunny Puerto
Rico. My Prediction: It's difficult for me to go against the Shock, but they are
an expansion team. Reality may set it this weekend, as for the second year in a
row, the two ArenaCup opponents have no home field advantage.
It should be a great time down in the Caribbean. Here's what look for; though
Spokane has a Coaching advantage, the Blizzard, in their fourth year will win.
They've gotten better every year in the League, just like last year's Champions
in Shreveport- Bossier, LA (a former CFL town!), Memphis, who I covered a game
for in '03 for MYKwebTV. At the beginning of the year I picked John Gregory and
Arkansas and Spokane took them out with ease. But Spokane had an easier schedule
and I can't see an expansion team going all the way to the Cup and winning, and
if Spokane does pull this off, I promise I will buy one of their Championship
t-shirts! My Pick: Green Bay 59, Spokane 57 and one wild time in merry old
Puerto Rico. Hope the game is on Fox Sports Net. It will be televised throughout

Expansion Spokane continues to 'Shock' [their nickname, too!] everybody by
hanging around in the Af2 ArenaCup7 playoffs! Nobody expected this first year
club to continue to outlast opponents the way they have this long~! They may
have run out of luck when they face the John Gregory lead Arkansas Twisters in
the National Conference Finals next Weekend. Gregory is my choice for Coach of
the Year as Arkansas just won their second straight road playoff win. I
predicted at the beginning of the season that the Twisters would win it all, and
I am close now. Good luck to the 'Final Four' of the Af2 League as they try to
win ArenaCup7!

UIF Update: United Bowl II this weekend. Thanks to my new friend, Mike Girard,
Media Guru/Director of the very fine 'AA' Indoor Pro 'United Indoor Football' [UIF] league,
which I previewed, along with the Arena Football's Af2 at the beginning of their
season number two. United Bowl II will be held this coming weekend, July 29th in
Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the state where four of the dead great white fathers
have half their faces (profiles!) immortalized on the side of Mount Rushmore.
Mike extended to me a Media Accreditation to the big game.
Thanks again to Mike Girard and hope the Indoor Bowl II is a smash success, as I
am sure it will be. A classy guy and League, that is expanding next year into
the very Constitutionally correct town of Fort Collins, CO., with the new
Colorado Ice (great name!) Sioux Falls (15-0!) will face the very well named
Lexington (KY) Horsemen (13-2) for the title. Since Sioux Falls is 15-0 and
since the UIF NHL -style playoffs have lowest remaining seed @ highest remaining
seed, Moose's pick: Sioux Falls by six OVER Lexington.

Af2 /Indoor Football Notes: I expect to see the Ar.FL on ABC next year. They
(between 1998-2002) used to do a superb job on the ArenaBowl. The Ar.FL will NOT
be on NBC next year. The deadline passed for NBC, which probably doesn't care
now that it has the reprobate NFL back on, for the network to dominate both
Indoor and Outdoor Football w/ both the NFL and Ar.FL on year round. Get
this; they are thinking about doing NFL E in the spring though... Haven't we
been down that road enough w/ the NFL "AAA" on Fox in the past? What was the top
NFL E Bowl rating, something like 1.1? The Ar.FL was getting a very respectable
2.65 rating last year.
Anyway, Ken Shanzer, NBC Sports 'Dir.' has no vision. Getting off my soapbox
now, I am truely glad not to have pinhead Al Trautweg (sp?) and Glen 'Super Bowl
Loser (5x!) Parker not talking about something they know nothing about! Like my
buddy Gabe Morency said several weeks back, "Rich, they should have us on
there!" Back to Af2, Shawn Withy-Allen's stats may not show it, but Fayetteville
could very well go all the way, as they
still have only lost once (!) all year. And how about that expansion Spokane,
13-2! That would be quite an ArenaCup7! Always would have like to have seen
Hawaii v. Norfolk. I would have had to get Scott Baxter on a plane for that one!

The League announced two weeks
ago that they will expand into Boise, Idaho starting off in the 2007 season. I
have just the nickname for them; The Spuds! Most have heard of Remember the
Titans. But I say remember the Norfolk Nighthawks and Hawaiian Islanders!: The

Aaron Sparrow, QB, '02:Chris Wallace, QB, '01: Marvin Davis, OL/DLm, '00: OS
Anthony Stringfield, WR/DB-LB Doug Seidenstricker, OL/DL: Silas Demary, K: Lee
McDonald.
The following players made All-Af teams: '00 Silas Demary, TE/DE, Doug
Seidenstricker, WR/DB-LB, '01 Marvin Davis, OL/DLm, '02-'03 Travis Burns, WR/KR.
Nighthawks Coaching Marks: Mike Buck, 8-4-0, Deatrich Wise, 11-11-0, Rick
Franzier, 8-8-0, Tony Missick, 8-8-0. Hawaiian Islanders: Cal Lee, 19-15, Chad

Update. Withy-Allen still on Fire! Champion Memphis upset second week in-a-row!
Dietz of Louisville sets all-time Pro TD mark!" Moose Salzer
Scores:
Florida 66, Macon 54
Everett 50, Stockton 41
Mohegan 59, Tulsa 24
Green Bay 52, South Georgia 50
Bossier - Shreveport 43, Tennessee Valley 40
Fayetteville 74, Charleston 14. Hawai'i's Shawn Withy-Allen now on season,
Passing: 175 Att(s)-131 Comp(s)-1,257 yds., 31 TDs, Rushing: 34 carries- 142 yds.,
7 TDs.
Arkansas 41, Rio Grande Valley 38
Wilkes-Barre / Scranton 55, Quad City 52
Louisville 86, Albany 66
Birmingham 43, Memphis 42
Central Valley 59, Amarillo 42
Withy-Allen is completing a League high 71.4%. The CFL should sit up and take
note! Louisville fill-in BQ Brett Dietz set a Pro Football all-time record with
12 TD passes in the Fire' win over slumping Albany! Rush OL/DE Khareem
Smith-Jones, won the ArenaCup6 last Aug. in Shreveport-Bossier (who dropped the
name 'City' from there too long name recently!), and who won the ArenaBowl XX
with Chicago recently just singed a one-year contract with the NFL's Minnesota
Vikings. The Las Vegas Gladiators just signed new Coach Danton Barto of the
defending Champion Memphis Xplorers to be their new Head Coach. This is not too
surprising as the Glads under squierly owner Ferraro have used, now three ex-Af2
Head Coaches (Frank Haege and Mike Hold the other two...) as Head Coach. Here's
to all the luck in the world to Coach Barto, who I have on video at home
playing for the then CFL Memphis Mad Dogs in a couple of games in 1995, their
only CFL season. Barto also played for the Memphis Pharoahs, who became
the Portland Dragons, who are now in Long
Island, New York, in 1996. Barto had been the only Coach in Xplorers history,
which goes back to 2001. New Memphis Coach pending.
Los Angeles Avengers QB Sonny Cumbie was just released by the Baltimore Ravens,
who just acquired Steve (Grounded Air) McNair from the Tennessee Tits', as Myk
Aussie calls them. Arena fans will remember that McNair's older brother Fred,
who also played for the Cowboys ('92 practice squad) and London in the WLF,
was an Ar.FL QB for nine years, and a darn good one! Dietz record 12 TD passes
in a Pro (Indoor) game breaks the Af2 record of June, 3rd, 2000 of Arkansas' Jon
Nielsen, who was subbing for injured retreat Andre Ware, a failed
NFL first-round pick, who also played for Toronto in the CFL, Oakland,
Jacksonville, Houston (Oilers) and Detroit in the NFL and Berlin in the NFL E
'AAA's. Everybody bashes Ryan Leaf and Akili Smith [how'd he get a Hawaiian
name?!] all the time, but nobody says Ware, now a college analyst was a bust!"

Little Kev F-Troop @ WR! Quote of the week/Week 10 Schedule; A thanks to Marc
Lestinsky, Media Guru, Af2 Little Kevin Feterik is really a sport and team
player. He moved to WR this weekend with injuries to two other Stockton
teammates and caught two passes for 75 yds, and 1 TD! Too bad his running and
passing have gone cold! A Special Thanks to Marc Lestinsky, Media Director
of Af2 from all of us here at MYKwebTV! Marc sent me, gratis, the 2006 Fact and
Record Book for Af2 and the Media Red Book. Mucho ablidged. I wanted to say that
before I forget - again! Also: Special tribute to recently retired Darryl
Hammond, of the Nashville Kats; Darryl set an alltime record by playing
for 16 yrs. of Arena Football. Darryl was drafted out of the Univ. of VA in 1991
by the New Orlean Saints and was the last player cut. He came out for the '92
New Orlean Arena League team (then known as 'Knights'). He played for them,
Nashville twice, Cleveland and Austin. He recently retired after 16 Ar.FL
seasons and will be in the Coaching ranks in Af2 next year. An obvious choice
for the Arena Hall-of-Fame, he was an Ironman in every sense of the word! He set
the Ar.FL record for total tackles and games played. From one Virginian to
another, 'Way to go, Darryl!'
Week 10 schedule and Picks:

Albany OVER Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Arkansas OVER Macon
Birmingham OVER South Georgia

**Keep an eye on ex-Orlando Predator and Norfolk Nighthawk (Af2) QB Chris
Wallace, who is also closing in on 10,000 yds., passing for his Af2 career, also
in it's sixth season. Did You Know (or did you remember) Dept. The Norfolk
Nighthawks and Hawai'ian Islanders, despite being out of the Af2 League the last
couple years, are still ranked 4th and 5th, respectfully in total wins at
home!?**
Quote of the WEEK: On winning his fortieth career Af2 victory, Manchester Coach
Ben Bennett said, "Well, it's better than I felt about turning 40!" Moose
