ex-Raider, '77 Super Bowl winner Mike Siani as H.Coach and Withy said he came
back to North Carolina this year to win an ArenaCup. The team is off to a 5-1
start and looks to be on their way, unless the homegrown Univ. of Hawai'i star
gets hurt again. Good luck to all the Af2 teams this year (even Stockton!) as
Af2 celebrates it's seventh year of existence." Moose

"I told you so (far) Dept.":
Walt Church, trying to get back into the Ar.FL, have another spectacular game
and I picked the Twisters of Arkansas to win ArenaCup7! Now true, I didn't
think that Church would come back and thought that Kevin 'Lil Feterik (F_Troop,
as some call him back in Calgary call him. But 'Lil Kev retired when he lost
his starting job to Walt and Coach John Gregory (Sask.-'89 Grey Cup winning
Coach) has got his guys fired up.
Canadian QBs Update: Simon
Fraser's J.R. Davies, Western Ontario's Chris Hessel and Saint Mary's Huskies
Steve Panella may end up in the Ar.FL before they do the CFL at the rate they
are going. Good luck to all of them this year!" Moose

Arkansas QB Kevin Feterik has
retired. His spot in starting lineup has been taken by Ar.FL/Af2 vet Walt
Church, who helped lead the Peoria Pirates (now 'AA' Rough Riders in UIFL) to
the '02 ArenaCup Championship. There are three former CIS Canadian QBs now
starting in the Af2 League. Gabe Morency and I discussed how odd this is on
the Friday night / Saturday morning Sportsrage Friday Night Freak show last
Sat. a.m. when discussing our 'This
Week in Arena Football' segment.
They are: J.R. Davies (Simon Fraser U.) w/ Rio Grande Valley (TX) Dorados, the
Macon Knights Chris (Redbeard) Hessel, Western Ontario Mustangs and the
Amarillo Duster Steve Panella, who won the Saint Mary's Huskies the Vanier Cup
several years ago in Halifax, NV. The new Media guy in Chicaog @ the Af2
League is: Marc Lestinsky, who replaces Ron Deuter, who hooked me up with
ArenaCup Media, et, al last year in Shreveport (the ex-CFL city)/Bossier City
where ArenaCup7 will be held this year. Gabe Morency was all over CFL
Commissioner T. Wright for not protecting Canadian jobs. Why three Canadian
pivots as good as those mentioned above should have to come to Af2 and play
for $300/game is absurd. It's not as if the Import QBs the CFL has gotten the
last few years have really set that League on Fire. And they are getting worse
in the NFL E 'AAA's as well. Question - How long will it take for Rich Davis
to get fired or have all his players in
Stockton, CA hate him? They lost their season opener, 41-40 Sat. night.
Week One Game Balls:
1) Brian Jones, QB, Memphis

From Moose "First the Preseason News: there will be another International Game played on the
West Coast this year in the Preseason '06 of arena2ball; The Japanese Samurai's
make another trip to play our Af2 squads, this time v. the expansion Everette
Hawks. Two years ago the Arena Aussies played the ArenaCup Runners up, the Macon
Knights. More expansion is on the way and I hope the ArenaCup7 is again played
in the great city of Bossier City (ajacend to Shreveport, a great former CFL
town), home of the rapidly improving Battlewings! The Battlewings are among many
clubs to have new Coaches this year; local cajan former NFL/CFL/USFL/Ar.FL QB
Johnny Fourcade is back in Arena2 Ball as their Coach, a good choice. Good luck
to the first 23 clubs listed below (San Diego is on hiatus 'til '07) in the race
for ArenaCup7!
Team By Team Previews:
(1) Arkansas Twisters, 6th season. Playoffs five times.Coach: John Gregory
(ex-CFL/Ar.FL). QB Kevin 'F-Troop' Feterik (Calgary-CFL/San Diego-Af2). Other
key players: OS/KR Ted Alford (CFL), OL/DLm:Colby Clark & Wesley Thibideaux, FB/LBs:
Jimi Holden & Ricardo Garcia, WR/DB Kevin Williams. Did these guys get serious
(not Howie Stern radio!) or what? Synopsis: If Bill Clinton, the former Akansas
Governor were still President, we could call them the "TruthTwisters". Sorry, my
attempt at humour. Former two-time Grey Cup Coach John Gregory, who has also
Coached in the Arena League with the late Carolina Cobras & Iowa Barnstormers
and the
New York Dragons, has a real good group here to work with. He should be very
hard to stop from going all way - if everybody stays healthy. Gregory came
onboard last year, replacing longtime Coach (and former CFL/USFL/NFL RB
Gary Anderson. I was on the Honolulu radio right after him in the summer of '03,
when in Southhaven, MS covering a Memphis Xplorers game for MYKwebTV), then.
Feterik replaced Four-yr starter Ricky Hebert, son of ex-USFL/NFL legend, Bobby,
but it was too late when he came here (last yr) to save Gary Anderson's job.
Gregory has developed QBs like Kurt Warner (yes, THAT Kurt Warner) and
Aaron Garcia (no relation to Ricardo). And yes; THAT Aaron Garcia. I talked to
Kev, the ex-Calgary Stampeder washout in Honolulu when I covered two Hawai'ian
Islanders games in June '04. He seemed relieved to be out of his dad's shadow
(and nuthouse) there and was just trying to build himself back into a decent Pro
QB. He's come to the right place with Gregory! He got caught in a three QB (Kane
Claunch/Khari Jones/himself) logjam in San Diego last year and ask to be traded
or released. He got his wish and had good numbers down the stretch here late in
the year, but it was too late to salvage their year. Arkansas WILL do well under
a vet Coach like Gregory. I am sticking my neck out (what else is new?) but
I,like Gregory and Co. to go all the way and win ArenaCup7 - if, as I said,
everybody stays healthy. They are a bit thin @ the moment, but Gregory has an
able staff and has many connections. He will get several players back from the
NFL E camps and later in the season, the CFL camps and bulk these guys up!
Predicted finish: 1st, ArenaCup7 Champions.
(2) Louisville Fire, 6th season. 0-1 in ArenaCups. Coach: Tommy Johnson. Key
players: QB: Joel Steele (replacing Philly Soul now emergency starter Matt
Sauk), K-Danny Kight (who has played in two Pro Championship games in his Pro
career), WR/DBs: Jerald Burley, Cesare Manning. Johnson is a very good young
Coach who simply ran into a buzzsaw in the second half v. the Memphis Xplorers
of Coach Danton Barto last Aug. 27th. I was there to cover the game for MYKwebTV
and couldn't believe THAT THAT Memphis club, who was like 5-11 when I saw them
at the DeSoto Arena two yrs., prior, COULD play like THAT let alone be in the
ArenaCup 2 yrs., earlier. Steele should be an able replacement for Sauk, but
don't expect 99 TD passes. 80+ would be nice with these skill players returning.
Like Champ Memphis, Louisville got 'raped' by the higher Leagues of many good
players but as I said with Arkansas above, NFL E camps and CFL camps will
provide some Af2 returning vets. Predicted Finish: Second Place in Af2. (3)
Memphis Xplorers, sixth season 1-0 in ArenaCups. Coach: Danton Barto, former CFL
Memphis Mad Dog & Memphis ArFL Lineman. The only Coach the Xplorers have ever
had. Worth the wait would describe how patience has benefited the Xplorers who
not only had their second straight wiining season last year but went all
the way, with the League's best Defence. Returning players include: QB Josh
Blankenship (he starts now), K-Steve Azar, TE/DE Ron Tupa (no relation), FB/LB
Marcus Walton. Training camp and preseason will determine how far these guys
have regressed in the offseason. They lost nine players to higher Leagues and
will have several areas of concern; one will be pass rush. They lead the League
in sacks last year and had the League's best Defence. They probably won't this
time, but with a vet Coach like Barto, a versatile ex-Pro Lineman, they'll be
close enough. Since the '00-'01 seasons when Quad City won both titles, nobody
has repeated (Shhh! Don't tell Coach Barto; but he won't either). Predicted
Finish: Third in Af2.
(3) Memphis Xplorers, sixth season. 1-0 in the ArenaCup. Coach: Danton
Barto (former CFL Memphis Mad Dog / Memphis Pharoah-Ar.FL). QB: Josh
Blankenship. Other key players: Steve Azar, TE/DE Ron Tupa, FB/LB Marcus Walton.
12 players from the Championship team of ’05 got pulled up to higher Leagues.
That leaves Coach Barto with quite a challenge this year but he will get the job
done and get these guys back into playoff contention. The best thing he does is
what happened to him during the first four years he was with this club; his
patience. As where the Ownership was patient with him to allow him to build this
team into a powerhouse, the players rewarded him with a Championship season over
favored Louisville. I even picked Louisville to win that game last year. It was
my first ArenaCup game and we have many pictures on the site. Predicted Finish:
3rd, Af2 playoffs again and another (patient) run at the Cup.
(4) Quad City Steamwheelers, seventh season. 2-0 in ArenaCups. Best alltime
attendance in League history, best fans. Owned by two men, one of whom is
Jim Foster, Jr., the inventor of Arena Football, the only man ALIVE to have a
Championship Trophy named after himself; the ArenaBowl trophy. Coach:
ex-Milwaukee Mustangs / Toronto Phantoms-Ar.FL/Norfolk Nighthawks-Af2, Rick
Frazier. QB: Matt Pike, Other key players: OL/DLm: Tony Brown, 6th yr., K Nick
Gatto, OS-KR Travis Burns. Analysis: Let's see; aside from Larry Bush moving up
to the top Owner spot and Foster sliding over laterally to No.2, these guys are
loaded! How far they will go in the playoffs with an excellent staff and players
will be decided by how many injuries they get. They had a bunch last year and
were ousted by upstart second yr., Rio Grande Valley (TX)'s Dorados. Yes - it
was a mild upset. These guys will have a very good season and will make the
playoffs again. In fact, only a recruitment violation in '01 caused them to miss
the playoffs in '02 despite a 10-6 team. Predicted Finish: 4th Af2.
(5) Macon Knights, seventh season. 0-1 in ArenaCups. Coach: Derek Stingley. Canadian
QB (Western Ontario) Chris (redbeard) Hessel, Other Key players: LB/FB/QB Lionel
Hayes (Grambling St.), OL/DLm: Kentral Blatcher, FB/LB Tyrone Myers, OS
Chris Johnson, WR/DB Hosea Laney. Stingley is a good choice at Coach here and
should be the best since John Fourcade (now at Shreveport-Bossier City) left
after the '03 ArenaCup loss to go to Florida (where he went right back to the
ArenaCup!). As the premier DS in the League when he played in Ar.FL, Stringley called the Defencive signals and should be Def.
Coordinator here. Canuck pivot Hessel was primarily a reserve last year but got
his feet wet enough to be comfortable in the 8-man set in Af2-ball this time
around. I would imagine it's a big adjustment for ex-CIAU QBs to move Indoors in
the Pros but Hessel played well when on the small field last season ('05). His
fellow Canuck,
J.R. Davies (Simon Fraser) @ Rio Grande Valley (TX) did well when he moved into
the starting lineup down there. It's a shame the Corporate Commissioner T.E.S.
Wright cares so little about Canadian pivots that many have to come South of the
bordert o play in Af2-ball for $300/game because he won't protect their jobs
North of the border. Just another reason to hate free trade. Stingley could be
Coach of the Year and Hessel could be M.V.P. Stay tuned. A playoff team for
sure. Predicted Finish: 5th Af2.
(6) Florida Firecats, sixth season. 1-1 in ArenaCups. Coach: Kevin Bous. QB:
Chris Wallace (plenty experience in Af2 - Norfolk / Florida & Orlando in Ar.FL.
Other ex-Nighthawks: DS Desmond Washington, sixth season,
OL/DL Rico Ochoa. Other key players: TE/DE Tony Agee (VA-NFL E), OS Boris
(Magic) Benton, OL/DL Antonio Dingle (VA Tech), Int'l player: FB/LB Fuminori
Sato (Japan). Otulook: Another year, another Coach: If this team stays healthy
they have a very good veteran squad that could make a run for their thrid
ArenaCup appearance in five years. It'll be a struggle in the Defencive
backfield, where only Washington returns - for now. Wallace is one of the best
QBs in Af2 - ever! And they have all the best returning players at the right
positions to make a serious run. Predicted Finish: 6th Af2, playoffs - again!
(7) Tennessee Valley (AL) Vipers, sixth season. 0-1 in ArenaCups. Played
last year as Tennessee Valley Raptors in the "AA" United Indoor Football League.
0-1 in ArenaCups. Back where they belong at Werner Von Braun Centre Arena, back
in the Af2 after ditching Owner Art Clark, who's brother David used to sell the
controversial "Leuchter Report" [see Indie Director Errol Morris site, or the
movie by Lion's Gate Films, 'Mr. Death: The Fall and Rise of Fred A. Leuchter,
Jr.]. Outlook: Welcome back to Af2, T.V.V's! The fans still turned out to see
the double-AA ball there last year, but it's good to see a return to the good
'ole Af2 of one of it's original really good teams - and with good ownership.
Rik Richards, unless he gets lured away, is a solid Af2 Coach who has Coached
with Mancester (
N.H.) Wolves before. There are plenty of good NCAA schools to recruit players
from in the state and several of that other
Indoor League's guys will no doubt follow Richards here. How quickly will they
gell? We'll find out soon. If Richards doesn't make it back, they can always get
first H. Coach, Tommy Luginbill, who lead them to that first ArenaCup
Championship, which they lost by 11 points to Quad City in '00. Predicted
Finish: 7th place, playoffs.
(8) Amarillo Dusters, second year. Coach: Steve Perdue (Rookie Coach). Top
returning players: OL/DLm: Jerome Walker, WR/DB Michael Broussard. No reason for
these guys not to be a good team this year after getting their feet wet last
year and even getting T.V. exposure on a Discovery channel show when a reporter
played one play for them on Special Teams. He got clobbered! This is a strong
organization which has a very good talent pool from the NCAA's to pull from.
Many players will return from higher Leagues like the CFL and NFL E later in the
spring. Remember the Af2 plays an 18 game schedule and 16 games count so there
will be at least one bye week to cool their heels. Predicted Finish: 8th place
Af2, playoffs.
(9) Albany Conquest, sixth year. Coach: Pete Constanza. Key veteran
players: K Vinny Cirricone, DS Travis Coleman, FB/LB Kyle Obendorf, TE/DE Oby
Arah, OL/DLm: Mpum Masimini, OL/DLm: Lou Vega, FB/LB Karlton Thomas, WR/LB
Tommie Jones. Costanza, about to be fired as Offencive Coordinator mutually
agreed to resign from the Ar.FL position with the Columbus Destroyers last year
in week 12 to become the third Coach for these guys in the '05 season.
Apparently somebody read my column last year as Richard (Punch the Owner) Davis
was 'cacked' after only six games (2-4 mark) and everybody on the team at each
others throats. The next choice, since Costanza was in the 'bigs' was an
Ast.Coach with five yrs., experience here but he willingly went back to being
Defencive Coordinator when Costanza, who is better as an Af2 Coach, came back.
He was lucky; he's been fired by the Norfolk Nighthawks/Iowa Barnstormers (both
in Af2) and several
Ar.FL teams as an Offencive Coordinator. He always manages to find another Arena
Pro job and he really does know Offence. He's been in Arena Football for 10
years now. This team has a good history and always manages to find a good QB.
They'll need to after vet Dee Bryant (no relation to Kobe, Myk!) was just
optioned by the League to Manchester, which will make Ben Bennett, their Coach
happy. Expect Dee to be in the Ar.FL in a year or so, if he stays healthy.
Albany; Predicted Finish: 9th, playoffs.
10) Bakersfield Blitz, fifth year. Coach: James Fuller (back where he
belongs!), career record as Coach in Arenaball: 23-20. Only returning vet
players: QB Chad Elliot, WR/DB Eric Mahanke. A good start though to get your
pitch-and-catch duo back. Now to fill in the other areas. Like Amarillo
and Tennessee Valley (AL), they have many NCAA schools to get quality players
from. Now, if those guys will invest a year or two into playing for $300/game is
the other thing. Fuller is a solid Coach (unless he gets called 'back up') and
these guys shoudl be good enough on Offence. Predicted Finish: 10th place,
playoffs.
11) Birmingham Steeldogs, seventh year. Coach: Ron Selesky. Meet the second
hardest working man in Arena Football, R. Selesky. (To Johnny Fourcade). Selesky
just hasn't had any luck sticking in the Arena League as a H.Coach (Buffalo /
Carolina) but remains a top Defencive Coordinator. He will have these guys in
the playoffs after replacing loooonnnnggggtime Coach Bobby Humphrey, a former
NFL RB, who retired after six years. It's hard to imagine a Selesky Coached team
NOT making the playoffs, so I won't. Predicted Finish: 11th, Af2, playoffs.
12) Bossier-City/Shreveport Battlewings (those are planes, folkes), sixth
year. Coach: The hardest working (journey)Man in Arenaball Johnny Fourcade. He
has taken two teams to the ArenaCup. Make it three. It'll happen, if the Newman
Bros. who own this team (I met one at the ArenaCup6 last August 27th in
Shreveport) give this guy plenty of rope. Fourcade played indoor football until
he was almost 40, in several Leagues and even got into a fight (shades of
Richard Davis!) with one owner before. But he has calmed down a lot. The former
USFL / CFL / NFL /
Ar.FL QB is one tough cookie and will help these guys have a winning season. The
Owners have said they guarantee a winning season this time around or season
ticket holders will get a full refund. They better hope they win! Key returning
players who will help Johnny F get that done include: OL/DLm Franklin Thomas, WR/DB
Mike Green, LB/FB John Lewis. Predicted Finish: 12th, playoffs. No Championship
- yet. Give Johhny F. time!
13) Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Pioneeers, sixth year. Coach: Cosmo Denicola. QB:
Josh Kellett (no relation to CFL's Matt). Other key players: QB Mike Granieri,
OL/DL Marcus Sargent, FB/LB Julian Morales (Their website has just been
updated but you can go to
www.arenafan.com to check the latest). Outlook: Not too grim but not rosy
either. Three years ago primary owner Johnny Unitas, the eighth best QB of alltime,
died. After last year, Coach Les Moss, son of Arena Leaguer Hall-of-Famer,
Perry, who also won a Grey Cup in the CFL, left to go back to the "bigs"
(i.e. Orlando) ater their Defencive Coordinator, Bret Munsey went to
Philadelphia to become the Soul's new Coach. This team has yet to have a losing
record. Don't expect that this year! Predicted Finish: 13th, Af2. playoffs,
again.
14) Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, third year. Coach: Jeff Jarnigan. QBs: Craig
Strickland, Josh Stewart. Other key players: K - A.J. Hagalund, DS Rickie Davis,
FB/LB Eric Butler, WR/DB Carlos Johnson (Alongtime Ar.FL vet), WR/DB Jarrail
Jackson, OL/DL Curtis Bolden, WR/LB Al Hunt, WR/DB Brandon
Daniels, Int'l player: Welsh FB/LB Kenny Saro, Glamorgan Wales, College, U.K.
This team is loaded but they always seem to come up a bit short. If alltime
passing Af2 leader Strickland has anything left in the tank these guys should
content. But... there seems to be some doubt about their ability to finish. How
these guys have managed to stay together this long (they must have good
offseason jobs, eh?) is a mystery. They WILL make the playoffs again. But again
fall short. Saro could be a good NFL E player in a year or so. Predicted Finish:
14th, Af2, playoffs.
15) Tulsa Talons, sixth year. 1-0 in ArenaCup. Coach: ? QB Marc Eddy, Other
key players: OS Dallas Mall, WR/DB Darnell Wimberly, WR/DB James Sadler, WR/LB
Zac Jones.
The
Talons are finally getting back to basics and will make the playoffs but don't
either have a H. Coach yet or haven't named one of their Assistants. Stay tuned.
Whoever should get to Coach this team will have one of the most solid returning
bases of vet Af2 players and also a good organization to run things. The fans
have been good for these guys and should make it a fun year again. Especially
when they play their in-state rivals, the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. Predicted
Finish: 15th place, Af2, playoff appearance at least.
16) South Georgia Wildcats, fifth year. Coach: Donnie Davis (ArenaBowl
winning QB, Arizona). QB: Bobby Pesavento, Other key players: OS Matt Burstein
(former Af2 Offencive player of the year), WR/LB Chris McKinney, DS Leo Fenceroy,
OS Archie Turner, DS Larry Sutton, K- Wes Virgilio, FB/LB Jason Null. This
should be the last team to qualify for the Af2 playoffs (16 will). Davis is a
young Coach to watch. He played very well (when healthy) in the Ar.FL (three
teams and a brief stint in the CFL). Offence shouldn't be a with problem
Pesevento passing to Burstein and McKinney and Co. The Defence could be a
problem though. The last and 16th team to make the playoffs this year
17) Rio Grande Valley (TX) Dorados, third year. Playoffs last year. Coach:
Kevin Guy (unless he gets called up). QB Canadian J.R.
Davies (Simon Fraser). Other key players: OL/DLm Will
Goodloe, WR/LB Travis McAlphine, WR/DB Pierre Thomas, OL/DL John Bradley. With
the Coaching situation in a flux, it could be along year for the Dorados, who
have the prettiest cheerleader in the League, bar none!
Davies became the first Canadian QB to start an Arena League game at that
position in the League's history. He and Hessel from Western Ontario's Mustangs
may make history this year, if they square off v. each other. It'll take a
Herculian effort for them to make the playoffs but we'll see if 'Simon Fraser'
does it. Predicted Finish: 17th.
18) Mancester Wolves, fifth year. Coach: Ben Bennett, Arena Football
Hall-of-Fame QB, who replaces Ron H. Hill, ex-Norfolk Nighthawk Asst.Coach. QB
Dee Bryant (no Myk, not Kobe's relative). Asst.Coach/Special Teams,
ex-Nighthawk's Owner Ken Easley, Jr.'s brother. Other ex-Nighthawks OL/DL
Shabbaz Wiggins, FB/LB James Richardson. Give this club credit for prying away
from Coach: Costanza and Albany, territorial pick QB Bryant. Well, at least
Bennett won't have to design a Defence to try to stop him. Bryant is the Michael
Vick of Af2. The most athletic QB ever in this League. And one of it's least
consistant, too. He might be ready to grow up now since there were no takers in
the Big Brother Arena League (they already have ONE Michael Bishop, who isn't
starting anyway!) This team won't make the playoffs unless several other clubs
all come down with food poisoning - which of course we wouldn't want to see.
Don't miss the Bossier City-Shreveport / Manchester game. You won't find two
more intense Coaches than Fourcade and Bennett, who used to have some fierce
battles as Arena League QBs! Predicted Finish: 18th.
19) Green Bay Blizzard, fifth year. Made playoffs twice. Coach: Bob Landsee.
Ast.H. Coach/Offencive Coordinator: Mark Stout (former USFL K). QB: Brent
Lueske, Other key players: OS Brent Holmes, WR/DB Dontrell Jackson, WR/DB Bobby
Boss, K - Musa Conteh (VA St.), DL/TE/FB Asa Francis (the team's best pass
rusher, formerly Frankfurt Galaxy NFL E and Quad City). This team is well
stocked in Offence and Coaches and little else. Every year they lose players and
Coaches but this year they won't quite make the playofss. Predicted Finish:
19th, Af2.
20) Everette Hawks (first yr., in Af2 after one yr. in NIFL). Coach: Ricky
Foggie (former 10-yr CFL and 7 yr Ar.FL QB), who served last yr as Offencvie
Coordinator with (then) expansion Amarillo Dusters, who made the playoffs. At
least Foggie doesn't mind a challenge. Foggie, who was a competent QB with the
B.C. Lions across the border in Canada in the CFL is used to expansion teams
obviously. It'll help some
21) Spokane Shock, expansion team. Coach: Chris Siegfried, former Af2
original player from '00 and Coach of Cape Fear Wildcats (now in Albany, GA as
'South GA'). Key Players: WR/LB Nian Taylor (ex-Hawai'ian Islander/Richmond
Speed, played for Rich Davis, poor guy!/San Diego Riptide player who broke a
bone in his leg in the Rose Bowl in '01 for Washington), FB/LBs:Chauncey Ako (also
former Hawai'ian Islander), Aloali'i Lealofi, Tupo Tu'upo, former B.C. Lion (1
game), OL/DLm: Chris Harnmeyer, WR/DB Hassan Tupai. A fairly good nucleus for an
expansion team with Tu'upo, Taylor, Ako and Lealofi. Defence is always what
kills expansion team chances in the playoffs. Good luck guys and you have a good
Coach in Siegfried, who used to give us Nighthawks a fit! They are the best
/ second best expansion team.
22) Fayetteville Guard (third year, formerly of the 'AA' NIFL). Coach: Shawn
Withy-Allen. Defencive Coach: Charles Gunnings (former Cape Fear Wildcat and
Norfolk Nighthawk Af2 player). OL/DLm: Jeremiah Pharm, Clint Bakken, DB Seddrick
Ashley. Pity poor Withy-Allen, fomerly Hawai'i QB (and Hawai'ian Islander - Af2
/ Guard pivot). He may need to be Coach/ Offencive
Coordinator and QB to bail these depleted guys out. Fortunately for the this
League, the NFL E training camp cuts provied them with depth as the NFL E camps
always run before the Af2's start. Withy was an Offencive Assistant Coach in the
NCAA's last fall after being one of June Jones III's brainy QBs at U./H. He'll
need it. He may be the youngest Coach in Af2 history. He might age fast, too.
Gunnings is good Defencive Coach.
23) Stockton Lightning (expansion team). Coach: Richard Davis (Yikes!). It's
only a matter of time before the Lightning (name of the since '02 defunct Af2
Lincoln, NE) regret having to recycle Rich Davis, noce fired by the ArenaCup
Runner-up Richmond Speed for punching (!) his owner! He was fired by the Albany
Conquest only six games into the '05 season because all the players hated him.
And that after the Conquest had stumbled to a 2-4 start! Predicted Finish: Last
in the League!
24) San Diego Riptide. Thanks again gang, for the Int'l t-shirt from the
Japanese Samurai's v. the Riptide Preseason '05 - This year expansion Spokane v.
the Samurai's, March 19th, the last preseason game Owner Jon Runyun (yes, THAT
Jon Runyun) has applied for 'one-year-dormancy'status to rebuild the Riptide
organization from within as Mr. Saidy, the previous owner let this team get way
down internally. All the players have been released and
have signed with Ar.FL and Af2 clubs. Good luck to the Riptide as they rebuild
and look forward to seeing them on the field in '07!
DISCLAIMER: When making my Arena League Picks or Af2 on Gabe Morency's Show, "Sportsrage",Mr.
Morency prefers that I go wiuth the spread. This may have caused some confusion
as Myk thought I was only 6 of 9 on my picks in Week three of the Ar.FL season
last week. I was actually 8 of 9 v. the spread. This is the format Mr. Morency
prefers and I find no fault with that. I am only an every week guest and have to
do this to the liking of the show's host, which I have no problem doing. Mahalo
and Mea Culpa if there was some confusion about that like with Myk. - R.A.S
