Quad
City is in a slump like never before. For the first time in their storied
history, they are 3-4 and below .500. I guess I can't shmooze with Arena League
founder Jim Foster in ex- CFL City, Shreveport, August 27th-28th @ ArenaCup VI?
Albany last week fired psycho Richard Davis, the worst
Coach in Af2 history and replaced him with recently fired Columbus
Destroyers (Ar.FL) Offencive Coordinator [allegedly!]. This should be good for
two more wins this season.

"It
looks like Shawn Withy-Allen is out for the year in Af2 after Breaking
his right (passing) arm in a game in Fayetteville, N.C. Hang
in there, kanaka! Timmy Chang, who the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos
were interested in, has signed a one-year deal with the Arizona
Cardinals. He should make their squad, despite the pre- Sense
of e-xAr.FL’r Kurt Warner and hometowner Dave Navarre. ‘Lil

The

ArenaCup VI in ex-CFL town Shreveport. Bad news for ex-USFL fans; former USFL /
NFL/ CFL RB-WR, Gary Anderson, The
only Coach the Twisters have had in their six year history, Has
been fired by the team after the recent three-game losing streak. The
team said they were tired of Anderson’s laid-back attitude (though
The players

Training
camps for all twenty Af2 teams opened today and 13 Canadians,
Nine Japanese and three Aussies are competing for jobs.
Familiar names include: Chris Hessel, Markus Howell and
the three Aussie mates that played in the annual Arena2 Preseason
Challenge.
Last year in the last Arena2 Preseason game,
the Aussies of Team Down Under played at the Macon Knights.
This year the Japanese Samurai Warriors, Coached by
me and Myk's mate, Masa Kawaguchi and ex-Memphis Maniax
Shimazu Yamada, the only Japanese player to play in
the XFL, will take on the San Diego Riptide on March 26th at
the San Diego Arena. Good luck to all our $300-a-game warriors
in the hunt for ArenaCup VI!
Speaking of International players,
Takamasi Furutano is now on the Philly Soul's regular roster. Last year he was
the first International player to win one
of the weekly awards. He played last year for Phil Simms and
Eagle Keys Louisville Fire. I look forward to rappin' Arena- ball

sometime between 11p.m. and2a.m. this coming Thursday

Preview
Sixth Season
By: Moose Salzer
"Mutiny on the
Bounty" would have been a good movie for the owners of the twenty remaining
Af2 teams to watch at their fall Board of Policy Meetings. Five teams left the
league outright to go to another League (the NIFL?!) and the Hawai'ian Islanders
went out of business; they couldn't get enough corporate sponsorship, which is
sad since there are no other Pro or Pro 'AAA' teams in the 50th
state. The Mexico / Texas Laredo Law have filed for 'one yr. dormancy', a
frequent occurrence in this second tier Arena League.
The former Fresno
Frenzy, Ricky Ray's old team did it after the '02 inaugural season, and returned
last year as the Central Valley Coyotes. Owner Kiki DeAyala, USFL player, who is also part-owner of the Laredo
Bucks minor League hockey team, hopes so. Laredo did OK in attendance it's first
year but logistical problems and Arena dates killed them for the '05 season.
Nov 11, 05 A
note from Kiki DeAyala "I was drafted by both
the USFL and the NFL. I chose to play in the USFL and earned All Pro Status both
years for the Houston Gamblers. I then was signed by the Bengals ( Bengals
originally drafted me) and played out my contract after the second season with Cincinnati.
I went on strike with my teammates"

[New Indoor Footie
News: the IFL, NIFL & NAIFL's are gone: the new conglomeration is now called
the UIFL (United Indoor Football League). It kicks off March 5th and ends in
July. It is made up of 13
teams, including one in
Canada called the Rough Riders, city TBA. They have a website, too. I printed a
schedule yesterday but forgot to bring it with my to do this report tonight. Mea
Culpa. Several ex Af2 teams, including past Arena Cup contenders / winners:
Peoria and Tennessee Valley are it. Predicted UIF Championship: between
Tennessee Valley and Peoria, of course.]
In '06, rumour has it,
the Af2 will become a true feeder League for the Ar.FL. Since NFL Europe is on
last legs, this is a good move. The Af2 League held it's fourth straight Pacific
Rim Training Camp, for the first time in Japan. Running it were: Af2 vet
Coaches, Danton Barto (Memphis, a team who I have coverd a game of), Macon's
Mike Hold, another former original Arena League player (and former fellow
replacement NFL player from '87), and Chris Siegfried (South Georgia [Albany]
Wildcats Coach. Note: the South Georgia Wildcats are the former Cape Fear
Wildcats of FayetteNam, N.C.). The camp was held in Kawasaki, Japan. New Tulsa
Coach Dave Alexander also attended.
The Af2 had over 100
players from Scotland, Germany, France, Japan, Australia and New Zealand attend.
The new site is due to the cancellation of the Hawai'ian Islanders and since it
was unable to be held in Australia this go-around. It also makes since, since
one of the new partners with Af2 International is SES, Inc. of Japan in
partnership with the highest outdoor American-style Football League in Nipon,
the X-League (not to be confused with that 'one-hit' wonder / experiment of NBC
several years ago, the XFL. There have been seven Japanese, two Aussie players
in Af2 and the Ar.FL combined so far. And with the University of Hawai'i, since
P Mat McBriar's career with the Warriors, have been heavily recruiting 'Down
Under'. There were three NFL Aussies last year, if you include the Packers
practice squad back-up P/K, Nathan Chapman and last spring, the Aussies' Af2
team scrimmaged the Macon (GA) Knights. This year
the Japanese team will play a preseason with San Diego, Mar. 26th.
Predicted Order of
Finish:
1) Quad City Steamwheelers, sixth season. Coach: Rick Frazier,
former Norfolk Nighthawks and Toronto Phantoms Coach. Key players, so far: K
Steve Scaldaferi, OS/KR Travis Burns, QB Matt Pike. Jim Foster, the man who
invented Arena Football and the owner of this team, the man who the Arena
Football League trophy is named after, loaded up for bear this offseason
bringing in veteran Arena League and Af2 Coach Frazier, who finished out last
Ar.FL season as I.H.Coach of the 1-15 Grand Rapids Rampage, who cleaned house in
August. Thus Frazier has brought with him some good ex-Ar.FL and Af2 players.
More good ones, particularly Local products will be added as training camp for
Af2 opens in one month. The Steamwheelers will be hard pressed not to make a run
at Arena Cup VI, as Foster's team is usually one of the Arena 'AAA'
League's best. They
haven't won the Arena Cup since '01 and were suspended for the playoffs in '02.
They won the first two Arena Cups. Predicted finish: Arena Cup VI Champions.
2) San Diego Riptide, fifth season. Coach: Sean Ponder, Af2 vet
Coach. Key players: WR/DB Makoa McElrath (how'd he get a Hawai'ian 1st name?),
WR/LB Rico Curtis, QB Brian Baker, not Barker, the NFL
punter, K Kimo Naehu,
an ex-Hawai'i Islander, FB/LB Takamasa Suzuki, QB Anthony Buich, OL/DLm Rico
Ochoa, the ex-Norfolk Nighthawk who played last year for the Wichita Stealth,
now also defunct. A
highlight for this team
will be on Mar. 26th when the Japanese Samurais team comes to San Diego Arena to
play a preseason game v. the Riptides. One Riptide who will be especially
interested
will be FB/LB Suzuki.
The Riptide lost Coach Mouse Davis, who semiretired to Hawai'i to Coach on the
staff of the Univ. of Hawai'i Warriors under his former star pupil, ex-NFL/CFL
QB, now Coach June Jones.
Also gone is longtime
QB Kane Claunch, who split the job last year
with Kevin (F-Troop)
Feterik, the CFL vet reserve lefty (I covered one of their games in Hawai'i last
June 19th). The Riptide, or eight of them to be exact, had an interesting
off-season as they and eight members of the Los Angeles Avengers Ar.FL team
competed in the ESPN original reality show, "I'd do anything." I
predict with the able Coaching staff they've assembled and with San Diegan Jon
Runyon, the Eagles OLm at the helm this team will compete for the Arena Cup with
Quad City. The Ar.FL and Af2 have switched playoff formats as the Af2 now uses
the NHL 'lowest remaining seed at highest remaining seed'
style while the Arena
League now uses American Conference winner v. National Conference winner, which
I think is a good thing for both Leagues.
3) Arkansas Twisters, sixth season. Coach: Gary Anderson, the
former 12 year
ex-USFL/NFL/CFL RB. Key
players:
4) Birmingham Steeldogs, sixth season. Coach: ex-Miami / Denver
RB, NCAA Hall-of-Famer Bobby Humphrey. Key players:
5) Florida Firecats, sixth season. Coach: Gary Compton. Key
players: OS Maurice (Magic) Benton, DSs Desmond Washington, ex-Norfolk Nighthawk
in his 6th Af2 season, WR/LB Travis Burnside, Arena Cup MVP last Aug. The
Firecats finally won that elusive Arena Cup and their Media guy / Merchandise
man tells
me more Arena Cup
merchandise will be available this spring. Gone are Coach John Fourcade, a
longtime Ar.FL player / Af2 Coach, who'd lost several Arena Cups before winning
last year.
6) Green Bay Blizzard, fourth season. Coach: Bob Landsee, who
replaces ex- Packer LB Brain Noble, who replaced liar Jose Jefferson, who
claimed he played alongside Kurt Warner with the Iowa Barnstormers, and was
caught and fired after the inaugural year of '02. Key players: FB/LB Bob
Sagedahl.
The Blizzard rallied
from a 5-8 start to finish 8-8-0 but out of the playoffs by a whisker. It'll be
tougher this time with QB Chris Griesen, the ex-NFL / NFL E pivot, who moved up
to the Dallas Desperados of the Ar.FL.
7) Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, second year. Coach: Jeff Jarnigan,
formerly of
the Tulsa Talon '03
Arena Cup staff. Key players: QB Craig
Strickland, who missed
by a whisker of staying in the Ar.FL. Strickland is the
trigger-man who guided
the Talons to the Arena Cup win in '03. He is in his 6th Af2
season and has
14,415 yards passing in
this League and 296 TDs, both alltime Af2
records.
Other Key players
include ex-Norfolk Nighthawk FB/LB James
Richardson, the
team's MVP as an
expansion team from last year, . Coach Harry
Reasons, the
ex-N.Y. Giants LB, has
kicked himself upstairs, and along with Horn
Chen and
Barry Switzer is
part-owner.
8) Tulsa Talons, sixth season. Coach: Dave Alexander. Key
players: QB Ben Bowman,
OL/DL Josh McMillian
9) Amarillo Dusters, expansion team. Coaches of note; H.Coach:
Don Carthel, an Arenaball rookie and Offencive Coordinator Rickey Foggie, a 16
year Pro QB of both the CFL [14,031 yards, 91 TDs, three Grey
Cup appearances, 18,674
more Arena Football yards, 280 TDs] since 1988. Foggie finished the '04 season
as the emergency starter for the late Carolina Cobras, now defunct. Foggie was
hired on the fly because of
his knowledge of the
indoor game and Pro QBing experience. For an expansion team this one got off to
a flying start by getting Carthel, a former college Ast. and Foggie in place
quickly. The Arena League(s)
always have done a
great job of promoting from within. Key players at this point are: QBs: Steve
Panella, Jarrod Rouanzoin, right off the college campus(es) & OL/DL Ray
Taupule. This team has the make up to be another Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, who
went 10-6 in their first year and lost in the first round of the playoffs. This
year only eight Af2 teams will make the playoffs, like 8 will make the Ar.FL
playoffs. Amarillo, if
they don't make it will be close. A team to watch.
10) Shreveport Battle Wings, fifth season. Coach & G.M.
Marcus Dupree, ex- USFL/NFL RB.
11) Macon Knights, sixth season. Arena Cup runner-up two years
ago. Coach: Longtime Arena vet player / Coach: Mike Hold. Key players: QB Will
Burch, ex- Norfolk Nighthawk, ex-Quad City Steamwheeler, ex-Roanoke Steam,
ex-Albany Conquest (ex-almost all teams in this League. He's played for nine
in five Af2 seasons!),
WR/DB Dezaray Delmore, DSs Jay Brooks, Nichloas Gage.
12) Manchester Wolves, fourth season, formerly the New Haven
Ninjas. Coach: Coaches of note: H.Coach Ben Bennett, played in four Leagues,
10-yr. Ar.FL vet pivot and former Florida Firecat Coach, Keith Easley,
ex-Nighthawks Special Teams Coach, brother of Kenny Easley, Jr. Key players:
Ex-Nighthawks FB/LB
James Fuller, ex-Ferrum
LB, QB Jake Eaton, who went a full camp with Edmonton (CFL) '04.
13) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (PA) Pioneers, fifth season. Coach: Les
Moss, former longtime Orlando Predators Ast. Coach and son of Ar.FL Coaching
legend & former CFL Coach Joe Moss. Key players:
14) Bakersfield Blitz
15) Louisville Fire
16) Central Valley (CA) Coyotes
17) Memphis (MS) Xplorers
18) Rio Grande Valley (TX) Dorados
19) South Georgia Wildcats
20) Albany Conquest, fourth season. Coach: Rich Davis, Davis won
the 1st NFL E Bowl as QB Coach with the London Monarchs back in June '91. I was
in the 1st row @ Norfolk Scope the year Richmond made the Arena Cup and in a
game v. the Nighthawks in which Davis was coaching. Albany has lost both their QBs
- Ryan Vena to Columbus in the Ar.FL and ex-Scotland Claymore & B. C. Lion
reserve Gus Ornstein to retirement. Davis has been out of Coaching since early
in the '03 season. It looks
to be a rocky roller coaster year for the once proud Albany Conquest franchise. Predicted finish, last.
Arena Cup VI
Prediction: Quad City Steamwheelers 43, San Diego Riptide 36
