Arena Football League / Af2 Report
The Hawai'ian Islanders had a bye week. I will be out in Oahu to see two
Islanders games in about four weeks. This move to the new digs, 1212 Saddleback
Landing, Ches., VA 23320 is killing me! Finally got my 2003 Western Division
Champs Islanders shirt in the mail yesterday. Also got my Regina Leader Post
articles from buddy Bernell, the insider man.
The Wichita Stealth are still in the top of the power Poll this week in Af2 with
an outstanding 7-0 mark, lead by former Wilson High QB and Norfolk State and
Norfolk Nighthawk, Aaron Sparrow. This kid has had every bad break (some
literal!) to keep him out of the bigger Leagues. But he is on target to hit
10,000+ Af2 passing yards and only three other Af2 pivots have done it!
Interesting deal this week with Japanese player Takuya Furutani becoming the
first non-American born player to win the Af2 Ironman of the week award. He
plays WR/DB/ST for the Louisville Fire of Phil Simms and Eagle Keys. Way to go
Takuya! Next year I expect to see some of Myk's Aussies get into at least Af2 on
a regular basis. So far only one Mexican and one Japanese players.

--Game Recap: Hawaii at Bossier-Shreveport
HAWAII at BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT
Bossier-Shreveport Defeats Hawaii 61-42
SHREVEPORT, LA – Despite a 226 to 175 yard advantage on total offense, the
Hawaiian Islanders dropped their second consecutive road game with a 61-42 loss
to the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings.
The
Battle Wings (2-3), who lost last week to Memphis 69-29, took advantage of some
early opportunities and never looked back. Field position proved to be a major
advantage for Bossier. Of their seven touchdown drives, five were only 27 yards
or less. Of Hawaii’s six touchdowns, five were of drives of 29 yards or longer.
Bossier-Shreveport quarterback Sherard Poteete orchestrated several key drives
in the first half to keep Hawaii off guard. Poteete threw for one touchdown and
ran for two others as the Battle Wings outgained Hawaii on the ground (41 to 7
yards).
Islanders quarterback Darnell Arceneaux suffered through a disappointing
performance as he completed only 19-of-39 passes for 219 yards and four
touchdowns. Shawn Withy-Allen will split practice reps with Arceneaux before
next game. WR/QB Aaron Smith caught nine passes for 75 yards while Nian Taylor,
and Kamau Perterson each caught three passes. Mike Miller caught one touchdown
while Anthony Arceneaux caught two.
The
Islanders (3-2) return home on Sunday and will return to the road to face the
San Diego Riptide next Saturday (May 8). Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. HST.

International News -
The Af2 Louisville Fire, 4-1, have signed Japanese WR/DB, Takuya Furutani for
the rest of the season.
American Arena / Af2 News -
The second youngest Arena player in history, K Vinnie Cirrincione
has just been signed by the Albany Conquest. The youngest overall player in
Arena League history is of course 20-year-old QB Adrian McPherson of the Indiana
Firebirds. Time for Withy-Allen or Ah Yat to take over? As the Islanders have
lost 2 of the last 3 games, is it time for Shawn Withy-Allen or Brian Ah Yat to
be the Islanders new pivot? Darnell Arceneaux is starting to look
long-in-the-tooth and even with his younger brother Anthony on board as a WR/DB,
Darnell is starting to look like he would rather be getting ready to Coach the
Saint Louis Crusaders then put up with the rest of the Af2 season. I fully
expect the Islanders to challenge for the Arena Cup this season but Coach Cal
Lee's squad took a severe hit when longtime TE/DL Tiki Sagapolutele got optioned
to mainland squad, the Bakersfield Blitz last Friday.
Last season Tiki had a family problem on the mainland and played the last four
games with the San Diego Riptide. Both Bakersfield and San Diego are divisional
rivals of Hawai'i. Without him the Islanders, who've looked like Af2
world-beaters 3 of the previous 4 weeks, got clobbered by 19 pts. Friday night
in Louisiana. Without Tiki, they simply generated no pass rush. They need
an inspired Keali'i Aguiar and Co. to put some heat on opposing QBs. Make no
mistake about it, the Islanders have gotten great production out of OWRs Mike
Miller and Aaron Taylor, who can also play QB and LB, but Arceneaux was very
mortal and uninspired looking v. Bossier/ Shreveport. Not so for former Norfolk
Nighthawk QB Aaron Sparrow and the (now) 5-0 Wichita Stealth, who for the first
time this season have placed first in my Af2 Power Poll. Sparrow was last week's
Offencive player of the week for Af2.
The 33-year-old former Wilson High School and Norfolk State QB spent the full
camp in '95 in the CFL with eventual Grey Cup runner-up Calgary before he was
released. He has played in the Arena League with Carolina, Iowa, Buffalo and
Grand Rapids and went a full training camp with the NFL Lions in '96 before
getting his release. Since,
he has played with Augusta, Tennessee Valley (Ala.) and Norfolk in Af2 before
the Nighthawks demise in Dec '03. He was optioned to Wichita, who lost QB
Anthony Buich and Coach Bob Cortese to Grand Rapids in the Arena League where
Sparrow played in their expansion season of '98, until he was hurt. Wichita also
lost former THE Hawai'i Warrior holder and reserve QB and former Hawai'ian
Islander deep sub (#3 QB) Jared Flint, who retired from Af2 after two seasons to
Coach the offence back in California at his former High School. Thus the Stealth
needed a QB. Wichita is ahead of Hawai'i and all-of-a-sudden flat Quad City. AF2
Arkansas got a REAL UNEXPECTED surprise by the activzation of OL/DL Coach, Arena
League Hall-of-Famer John Corker as OL/DLm.
Corker, the oldest player in Af2 history has played for my former boys in power
blue, the NFL Houston Oilers, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL, Michigan,
Oakland and Jacksonville in the USFL and spent the first nine years in the Arena
League's history as TE/DE with the Detroit Drive and Miami Hooters. Corker
played in one Grey Cup, Two USFL Championships and six consecutive Arena Bowls
collecting six Pro Football Championship rings. But when the 45-year-old Ast.
Coach of the Arkansas Twisters lost four lineman in three weeks to injuries, he
activated himself (with League approval) and suited up in a Twisters' game. He
is the second former Arena League player Coaching in Af2 this season to do this.
Florida Firecat Ast. C. Victor Hall, another TE/DE also played in two games this
year as his line was decimated by injuries as well. Speaking of the Firecats,
they recently signed former Norfolk / Roanoke and Richmond Af2 DS/KR Desmond
Washington for the rest of the season for their porous defence. This should
help.
There are now 8 ex-Nighthawks in Af2 but former Nighthawks QB Jermaine Alfred
was released on Thursday by New Orleans. In other Arena Football News, San Jose
has signed QB Scott Wood from their practice squad to the active roster. This is
very akamai since two years ago, despite winning Arena Bowl XVI, the then 12-0
Sabercats
lost starting QB Mark Grieb for the season in game 13 that year,
which they lost to Arizona, with a broken collarbone (clavicle?). Don't worry,
San Jose took it out on ancient Arizona in the Arena Bowl that year, pasting the
Rattlers 52-14. Wood was number three that season, too but he moved up to number
2 as former #2 John Dutton lead the Sabercats to the thrashing of the Rattlers
in the A.Bowl. Wood is
behind Grieb and as well, former Univ. / Hawai'i star, Nick Rolovich. Isn't it
funny we still keep hearing the names Rolovich, Withy-Allen and {Red} Flint?!
Timmy Chang will be IN A PRO LEAGUE NEXT YR too, which shows how far the Warrior
program has come since that disastrous '98 season. And to think, Fred Von Appen
wanted to make a TE out of Withy-Allen! Papule! More next week and let me say
hello to Randy Miyamoto, Scott Ka'alele, Super Bowl Wayne and Jonny Miro in the
50th state. Randy, I really enjoyed our conversation on the phone several weeks
ago, brudder! Howzit! And hope all is well in the Aloha State!" Moose
