Wed, Mar 23 04 "Joe
Carr, 1st NFL Commissioner a visionary! Week 8 picks!" Moose
I recently found this article in the 1997 edition of the NFL's Total Football
(it isn't!). This publication has the NFL stats through the 1996 season and is
updated every year by the League. First NFL Commissioner Joe Carr
(1921-1939) made the following statement in 1932, about the new municipal field
house then being built in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
If they only knew how close (our) football (league) is to moving indoors, and
what a smashing success we are going to have if we move the Pro game under
cover, they would not hesitate for a moment to spend the additional money needed
to size the building to the requirements of (that) game." Well, old Joe was off
by 48 years as Jim Foster's Arena Football League would kick off on June 19th,
1987, Indoors. Pro Football was destined to evolve into an Indoor game.
Ar.FL
Notes...Indiana would have appeared to made the right coaching change to Mike
Wilpolt...2-0 since the switch from overmatched Steve DeBerg...Ditto for
Carolina with former CFL great John Gregory taking
over for Ed Khayat...Way to go to both franchises!
Week eight AFL Picks -
Indiana over Grand Rapids
San Jose over Los Angeles
Georgia over Tampa Bay
Orlando over Las Vegas (that's my upset pick. And if the Preds don't win...)
Carolina over New Orleans
Colorado over Arizona (and if the Rattlers don't win- bye-bye season!)
Chicago over Detroit (stick the Fury with a fork, they're done!)
Austin over Philly serves Bon Jovi right for having Gore in his booth yesterday!"

Mon,
Mar 15 04 "Hawaiian Islanders report!" Myk
Moose
& I concentrate on the Hawaii footy market. Here's a report from Hawaii.
HONOLULU ?The Hawaiian Islanders open their third season in the
arenafootball2 league today with 36 players reporting at Aloha Stadium in
hopes of making the final roster of 21. This yearscamp roster has 10 players
that played at the University of Hawaii. Among the veterans returning to the
Islanders are Channon Harris, Robert Kemfort, Morrie Roe and Eddie Klaneski.
Newcomers who hope to make the squad include former Warriors Kealii Aguiar,
Justin Colbert, Neal Gossett, Jonathan Kauka, Keiki Misipeka and Shawn
Withy-Allen.
In the battle for the quarterback position, there are five presently in camp.
Returning for their third season with the Islanders are starters Darnell
Arceneaux and Mike Tillis. Former Iolani and University of Montana star Brian Ah
Yat returns to Hawaii after playing the Arena Football League?s Chicago Rush
last season. New York Dragons participant Aaron Smith and Withy-Allen round out
the contenders at quarterback.
It's great to see the guys back and they will all compete for the starting
job,? said Islanders head coach Cal Lee. 밯e뭭e
upgraded some positions but
we뭠l
see how they compete especially when it comes to wearing the pads.?
The Islanders will conduct practice at Aloha Stadium, St. Louis School and
the Blaisdell Arena. Media should contact the Communications Department for
updated practice time and location(s).
The Islanders open their season on Saturday, March 27 at Fresno to face the
Central Valley Coyotes. The home opener will take place on Saturday, April
17 against the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.

Ar.FL
Update:
First Coaching casualty of the '04 season is ex-NFL QB / Ast. Coach Steve DeBerg
at Indiana. The Pacers pushed him upstairs and replaced him at H.Coach with
(surprise!) 'D' Coordainator Mike Wilpot(?)!, not Assoc.H.Coach, Mark Stout, the
former Toronto Phantoms H.Coach.
Curious move by eh Firebirds, who are owned by the NBA Pacers. The team is stuck
in an 0-5 rut in the bottom of the Central Division. Wilpot, who has no previous
Head Coaching experience must know where the body is buried." Moose

The Dallas Desperados / CFL Connection:
TE/DE Shante Carver {B.C.}
DS Jermaine Jones {Edmonton}
OL/DL Mike Lawson {Saskatchewan}
DS Vernon Mitchell {Ottawa & Toronto}
WR/DB Sirr Parker {Calgary & B.C.}
OL/DL Chris White {Saskatchewan}
Additional: Dallas DS/DB/WR Shawndel Tucker, a 3-yr Arena League vet played his
college ball at The University of Hawai'i...Another Hawai'i/CFL story that bares
repeating is the Af2 League allocation of former CFL/Ar.FL QB Brian Ah Yat, who
broke all but one of CFL All-star Dave Dickenson's Unive. of Montana passing
marks, will be QBing the Hawai'ian Islanders of the Arena2 League this season.
That gives Hawai'i Coach Call Lee's squad the leg up on repeating as Western
Division Champs.
I dedicate this issue of Salzer's Sports Report to the memory of John Toland, a
great historian who passed away four weeks ago now at the ripe old age of 91.
Also we lost two other fine dedicated toilers for America's cause in Fred C.
Blahut, a courageous newspaper man of the old school and Admiral Thomas A.
Moorer, who was an acquaintance of my late father, a great Sports guy himself,
Richard Salzer, Sr.......
Ownership note: I bought over the internet yesterday, 20 shares of Community
stock in my beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders - that is the max each individual
person may purchase. Go Green Riders!!!!!!!
Around the Arena Football League, Week three: It looks like the wheels are
about to fall of the Arizona Rattlers wagon. No matter how much Coach Danny
White and Defencive Coordiantor Doug {original 46 'D'} Plank try to patch the
wounds with bailing wire, tape and chewing gum the worse this once dominant team
gets.
In this day and age of the indoor Pro League, you simply can't get by any longer
with aging Arean retreads like Hunkie Cooper, Shredrick Bonner, Randy Gatewood,
Bo Kelly, Mark (American Gladiator) Tucker, Jeff Cummings, et, al. The Rattlers
should have learned their lesson after being blown out in the last two Arena
Bowls. Georgia, Carolina and New Orleans did the RIGHT thing in the off season
spending the BIG BUCKS by signing as many very good Arena free agents as they
could before they were lured away by the CFL or NFL.
Las Vegas & Orlando, both of whom I picked to be in Arena Bowl XVIII this
June 27th, are 0-2. But I wouldn't get too excited about it Predator and
Gladiator fans. Both teams have excellent Coaches and with the 16 game season
NBC put in last year, there's still plenty of time to turn it around. Especially
with excellent QBs like Joe Hamilton {Orlando} and Clint Dolezel (pronounced
Doll-Zel) for Vegas. These teams have locked horns with two of the better squads
the last two weeks but the schedule gets easier coming up.
**Special Thanks to Scott Baxter, the walking Footy Encyclopedia for the heads
up and the link on the Rashaan Salami deal w/ TO.**

Aussies are coming to the US for Arena footy! The Arenafootball2 league will
have two international games on U S soil this March and I will be at one of
them!" Moose
On
Sunday, March 21st, the Louisville Fire will host the Japanese in a sanctioned
preseason game at the Louisville Arena, in Louisville Kentucky.
On Sunday, March 28th Columbus Georgia Knights will play host to the Aussies
team. The Australian team is made up of players from Melbourne and Sydney. Last
preseason '03 the Aussies, the Kiwis and Fijian team played v. the Hawai'i
Islanders and Quad City Steamwheelers in Honolulu at the Blaisdell Arena. Each
of the 32 Af2 teams are allowed to carry two Int'l players on their practice
squad. Tickets for the Columbus game are available at: 1-706-494-8330 after
March 1st at $10 per tix. This year the Ar.FL teams can carry 37 players to
training camp.
All 555 of the Nations theaters will carry a five minute mini-movie starring
John Elway and Jon Bon Jovi about Arena Football. It will be shown with the
previews before all movies from Jan. 9th through Jan. 23rd in the lower 48 U S
states. It starts out as John Elway visits Bon Jovi's house to welcome him to
ownership of an Arena team and it breaks out into an argument and then a game in
which the Colorado QB gets hurt and Elway has to come in off the bench and PLAY
QB! Well, he will be going

"The Af2 League has given ALL teams until Jan 1st to announce whether they
will play in the '04 season. With six new teams set to play the '04 season the
league needs to finalize the schedule before the season kicks off. The
Nighthawks need at least one more week before finalizing their number #2
ownership position. Last spring Bruce Smith, lately of Washington in the NFL,
playing his final year, divorced himself from former partner Ken Easley, the
former NFL all-Pro safety from Seattle. Easley's business practices had been a
concern for Smith and Gen. Manager Billy Mann.
Mann said recently in two articles in the Virginian Pilot/Ledger star newspaper
that he has narrowed the field down to two or three potential sponsors. An
erroneous report appeared twice this week in the paper saying that the
Nighthawks
were going to go under and that 3 more teams in the Atlantic Division are also
in
trouble. But when I called Richmond, Greensboro and Cape Fear teams, they
denied that they were contemplating packing it in. Strange.
Good news about former Hawai'i Warrior Nate Jackson who had to have heart
surgery one and a half years ago. He has been cleared to play for th Hawai'i
Islanders of Af2 this spring. According to Randy Myamoto, KUMU 2, a.m. 1500

year as Hawai'ian Islanders H. Coach. Mele Kelekemaka to all during the holiday

Arena Football Update By: Rich 'Arena Moose' Salzer
More than 400 aspiring American-style Football players will be attending the 3rd
annual Arena Football League Pacific Rim Training camp to be held in the
following cities during this Dec. 12th-19th: Sydney, Au., Melbourne Au., and
Auckland, N.Z. The following personnel will attend: Coach Mike Hold, 12-year
Arena QB who currently coaches the Macon Georgia Knights, who were the runner-up
team in the Af2 ArenaCup IV, Executive V.P., Jerry Trice and Umpire/Referee
Buddy Ward.
The NFL remains behind the Arena League Umpires and Referees in both the Arena
League and Af2 ('AAA'). Nine so far have moved on to becoming NFL refs, or as
Myk
calls them, 'magpies'. Additional: 7 members of the Dallas Desperado Cherr squad
will entertain there at: "Arena Down Under", as this years camp/clinic
is called. Last
season two Aussies made the practice squads of Af2 teams. Twelve players from
the three camps have made Af2 rosters since the league started conducting them.
Since 1987 the Arena League has had one neutral cite game in Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada (5-15-97) and 11 more preseason games in Japan, Germany, Mexico, England
and France. The Hawai'i Islanders will kick of their third season on March 31st,
'04. One player born in New Zealand and 4 from Japan, two with NFL Europe
experience have played with the Islanders in the 2002-2003 seasons. Best of
luck, mates. Arenaball kicks off it's 18th season on Feb 8th, 2004 on NBC.
