Football League week Five picks! Ar.FL Hall of Fame Update: Who will it be in
the Class of ’06? + My Picks!
Arena 2 team previews" Moose
Week Five Picks:

Tampa Bay OVER Austin
Nashville OVER Grand Rapids
Las Vegas OVER Dallas
Colorado OVER Philadelphia
Chicago OVER San Jose
Orlando OVER New York
Ar.FL Hall of
Fame Update: Who will it be in the Class of ’06? + My Picks
The 2006 Arena Football League Hall of Fame hasn’t been picked yet. But here’s
my two cents worth (for what THAT’S worth)!:
The late Fran
Papasedero, Coach / Player. A five year Arena League outstanding Lineman, Fran
was tragically killed in a car accident in the summer of 2003, necessitating Jay
Gruden’s return to the bench as Coach with Orlando. Fran was one of the
outstanding young Coaches in the League. Two-time All-Arena player. Went to
three straight ArenaBowls between 1998-00, winning two.
2) Rickey
Foggie, Player, now Af2 Coach. Foggie was a very good QB in the League for seven
seasons and even played (sometimes in the same calender year) for the CFL, where
he was a QB for 10 seasons. Myk and I talked to him in the B.C. Lions locker
room in ’02 following a game in which they won over Winnipeg. Foggie, 40 got
into the Coaching ranks last year as Offencive Coordinator for the expansion
Amarillo Dusters. This year he will Coach the first year Spokane (WA) Shock.
Hold several alltime passing marks including 446 yards passing in the playoffs
back in 1998, for New Jersey.
3)
Mike Dailey, Coach. Yea, I know; he’s still active. But Arena League rules don’t
prohibit active Coaches from going into the Hall until they are already retired.
Has won two ArenaBowls and I am sure there are more to come. Has Coached, H./or
Ast. Since 1990 with Washington. Helped both the Firebirds franchise (’99, over
Gruden, Papasedero and the Predators) and the ’05 Colorado Crush to winning
ArenaBowls.
Mike Hohensee,
Coach. Another Coach since 1990, he hired Dailey to be his Line Coach. Played QB
in Washington also in the USFL under a future Ar.FL Coach, Ray Jauch, who was
the winningest CFL when he left to take over the USFL Washington Coaching ranks.
Hohensee was the League’s first great QB (’87-’89) and threw the League’s first
points – a TD pass for Chicago.
Also played for Pittsburgh and played in two ArenaBowls.
Flint Fleming,
Player, OL-TE-FB/DL-LB-KS. Set Arena League and ArenaBowl records for blocked
kicks in a game and career. Played 12 Arena League seasons and one more in Af2
with Quad City. Ast. Coach for several Arena League teams. Played in six
ArenaBowls and won four with Detroit, Tampa Bay and Arizona. Most versatile
player in Arena League history, he played 8 different positions on Offence/Defence/Special
Teams
In other Arena League News: Former Farrington, Honolulu, Oha’u, Hawai’I player
and Hawai’ian Islander/Austin Wrangler/ New Yorker, Josh ‘Zeus’ White was
released by undefeated Austin. Zeus, who plays with one eye, had trouble picking
up blitzes and is a bit overweight,. He was an outstanding player for the
University of California and with the Islanders so don’t bet against him being
picked up by another Ar.FL or Af2 team. He’s a gamer who’ll play until he drops,
like Doug Flutie.

Arena Football League Team Previews: Kansas City Brigade, Philadelphia Soul,
Arizona Rattlers.
Kansas City Brigade, expansion season. Coach: Kevin
Porter (Af2 vet Coach). QBs: Andy Kelly [36,600+ Ar.FL yds., most TD
passes in Pro Football history, 732 between the Arena League (12 yrs.) and
NFL E (2)], Steve Bellisari, Chris Sanders (started 6 games for Orlando
last yr.) Other key players / owners, et, al: Tyler Prochnow & Neil Smith
(12-yr. NFL DE w/ Kansas City Chiefs & Denver Broncos), FB/LB Jeremy Buetler
(NFL E & Austin-Ar.FL vet), 2 former Orlando Preds OL/DL, Fred Ray & Jon McCall,
and TE/DE B.J. Cohen (Marshal and N. O.), DS Travis Coleman, DS Chris Green
(Ariz.-Ar.FL), K Tim Seder (Phlliy-Ar.FL/Dallas-NFL). Outlook: The deed got done
quicker than anybody this side of William, my faithful reader from K.C. thought
it would have. The Missouri/Kansas border city got it’s Arena game on! This
looks to be as good an expansion team as did the Wranglers, in ’04 when they
came on board in Austin. Kelly still has two good years left, at least and he
may be the only QB to last in Arena Football into his 40th b-day. He
is still battling Columbus John Kaleo and N.Y.’s Aaron Garcia for alltime stats.
The hardest thing for any expansion team to get right as soon as possible is of
course, Special Teams.
The Free agency stock got them a good one in Seder, the ex-Cowboy. By the end of
last NFL season, the ‘Boys probably wished they had him back! Green and Coleman,
a couple ex-Soul players will be a solid DB contingent. Rushing the ball Buetler
will love running behind: Cohen (TE/DE), McCall (C/NG) and Ray (OG/DE). The WR
corps is a bit thin – so far and the Af2 players have SOME indoor Pro Football
experience, so that should improve as Kelly is a pinpoint passer. Maurice
Clarett called these guys (or his agent did, but until he gets out of jail, like
no tryout), but like Nancy (Astrology) Reagan used to implore us – Just
say ‘No’. Sanders proved that AF2 (old Roanoke Steam) did him good as he capably
filled in for an injured Joe Hamilton last year in Orlando. With Sanders, Cohen,
Ray, McCall and Green, there is a real ‘Preds-in-the-midwest’ feel to these new
guys. And fortunately for the Brigade (the former name of the two yrs. defunct
Rochester Af2 team…) the playoff for- mat is more liberal than Hitlery Clinton;
12 of the 18 current active teams get in. The Brigade will by the hair on Andy
Kelly’s toenails. Predicted Finish: 9-7-0.
Philadelphia Soul(less?), third year. Coach (another
new one – yawn!) Talented Bret Munsey From the Jay Gruden Stable number one in
Orlando. QBs: Tony Graziani, Matt Sauk (who lost ArenaCup
6 in Shreveport back in late Aug and set Af2 passing marks of 12,000+ yds. In
five yrs., and passed for 99 TDs last season in Af2). Other key players:
OS Marcus Knight (who played in the Jan. 26th, 2003 Super Bowl XXXVII
in San Diego for Da Raidahs), WR/LB/ST’r Sean Scott (who could be the best at
his position in the League soon…), WR/DB Yardon Brantley,
FB/LB Wes Ours (300 LBS. FROM West Virginia, poor guy!),
FB/LB Chad Dukes (Ironman of the year in ’98), LB-DB-WR Aaron Boone, OS
Rob Milanese (the Ar.FL’s Wayne Chrebet), DS Reggie Doster. DE/G E.J. Burt (yet
another ex-Pred who came over from Orlando – He set an
alltime Pro Football record 27 sacks w/ the Cape Fear
Wildcats in Af2 ’02), OL/DL Ernest Allen. Muncey
is a good young Coach and Defencive Coordinator who prepped with a H.Coaching
experience in Af2 several yrs. ago and alongside Jay
Gruden & Fran Papasedeero in Orlando.
Like
I said about the new K.C. Brigade, “Preds-in-the-midwest”, this team is “Preds-in-the-
Philly Cheesesteakland”. Is ‘The Graz’, Tony G. worth all that money? We’ll see
this year as this team continues to improve. Yes, they will make the playoffs
this time, Jaws and Craig and Mr.’Shot-through-the-heart-and-you’re-to-blame’.
Patience has never been a virtue to these three owner/operators in the first two
years of this clubs existence! gone are both Coaches who couldn’t get these
overrated guys into the playoffs in seasons one and two, despite the best
Receiving corps in the Arena League. Wrong also was Danny White, analysis who
lost his job in Arizona after losing those three straight ArenaBowls.
HE PREDICTED an ArenaBowl appearance fro these guys when they (Over)paid lefty
Tony G. NFL BUCKS to QB this team. HE WAS not too good the first three of five
weeks, but the owners/operators kept him and fired Mike Trigg, a former
ArenaBowl winning QB & Coach after 72-45 loss to Dallas on NBC when they failed
to score in the second half. They then promoted the Coordinator of the
League’s worst Defence (which will be greatly improved this go around!) to
H.Coach and still only finished 8-8-0. They’ll finish at 10-6-0 or 9-7-0 this
time and get a quick bus ticket back to Cheesesteakland in the playoffs first
round. Muncey for Coach-of-the-Year?
It’s possible. At least he’ll keep Mr. ESPN & Mr. ‘Livin’-on-a-prayer’ out of
the locker room!
Arizona Rattlers, fifteenth year (third oldest club in the League).
Coach(?)/G.M. Gene Nudo. QB(?)
Shredrick Bonner and Nick Rolovich. Nudo was an exectutive in the Ar.FL’s front
office since the League began, but this is his first Coaching gig in Ar.FL. He
must have bowled himself over in the Interview! He’s also G.M. Other key players
(they hope): WR/QB Dennis Gile (Sask-CFL/Af2
vet), Overrated and againg is the forcast in desert city this year for this once
proud franchise. Colleague Scott Baxter and I checked out their 1997&1994 Team
video (VHS of course) the other day at my house. This team has been in five
ArenaBowls, also third in League history to Tampa (7) and Orlando (6), who have
been in the League longer. Shannon Skinny Cluver, an ex-
Balt. Stallion (the only Amer-I-can team THAT WILL EVER
WIN A Grey Cup) teams with other WR Randy Gatewood to give them at least
somebody for again Bonner and former Hawai’I Warrior (NCAA) record-setter
Rolovich to throw to. Behind them? Travis Cole…Yikes!
FB/LB Frank Terntdue will gain pretty good yards behind an ancient Offencive/Defencvie
Line that needs it’s playbook in hiroglyfics (sp?)!
Original ‘American Gladiator’ Mark Tucker is back (and
still has his own teeth!) and will team two ex-San Diego Riptide (Af2) players;
Trevor Misipeka (Kekei’s bro) and FB-TE/DE-LB Asa Faoa, a good pair of kanakas.
Ancient Jerry Sharp, once traded from Nashville (expansion in ’97) to Orlando in
the Jay Gruden as- Coach deal backs them up. Nudo figures to age fast on the job
this year. This Franchise has been in trouble since Gretzky last year brought
the Ravens of The N.L.L down from Canada instead of bailing them out.
Predicted finish: Last.
Utah Blaze, expansion season. Coach: Danny White (141 wins in 13 Ar.FL
seasons with Ariz; former
Cowboys –NFL QB: 20+ team records), Ast. Coach. Hunkie Cooper, Former Arena
Football great, Arizona, 20,000+ yds. Other key players; FB/LB Tom Pace, OL/DL
Doug Kafusi (former 3 yr. NFL E
vet), QB Tali Ena, WR/LB Emmett Waite, QB Joe Germaine. This team thought it had
WR/LB Randy Gatewood, another top 20 alltime Arena League player and QB
Shredrick Bonner locked up, at least as assistant coaches. Bonner backed out of
his contract when ex-White acolyte Gene Nudo offered Ced one more QB contract.
Gatewwod also decided he would like to give it one more season of play. They
both walked then Bonner signed with Las Vegas, and broke that contract! Lawsuits
anyone? White did the best thing possible and signed Ariz’s Joe Germaine.
Backing him is rook Ena this team’s roster is a bit unsettled at this time, but
they could turn out to be the best expansion team in quite awhile, along with
Kansas City.
The season tix are sold out and there have been several Indoor Football teams
(usually low budget “AA” and “A” types, one where a plyer DIED several years
ago. Indoor Football is not for the faint of heart) in Utah before. Remember Al
Harrington, the American samoan actor who played several roles on Hawai’I Five-0
from 1970-74? his twin sons, Alema and Tau, formerly of the Hawai’ian Islanders
of Af2 are in the front office and the Utah Jazz own the team. I expect big
things out of them in the near future. And don’t bet against Shredrick Bonner
and Gatewood joining them next year if the Rattler move the desert. But until
then, it should be a good rivalry! Predicted finish: 9-7-0, playoffs, since 12
teams make it.
Tampa Bay
Storm, 20th season. Last original team left in the League (first
four yrs., as Pittsburgh
Gladiators). Coach: The One and
only Tim Marcum – White, Dailey and Gruden will chase him a long time for top
Coaching records! 171 wins, 10 ArenaBowl appearances, 7 wins, et, al) QBs: Shane
Stafford (NFL E / Af2 vet), Pat O’Hara, back as player after one year as Ast.
Coach/QBs. Other key players: OL/DL Kevin Dogins (has the unenviable task of
trying to replace Kelvin Kinney who flew the coop for Columbus), K Bill
Gramatica, WR/DB/KR Bobby Sippio, WR/LB Lawrence Samuels (still the older
brother of Washington-NFL’s Chris, OT), DS Jon Ordway (Ottawa-CFL, in Ar.FL’s
offseason), OL-TE-FB/DE-LB Nile Wiren, OL/DL-LB Clint Mitchell. So the Storm
will make another run at ‘Lord’ Foster’s cup (sorry – a ‘lil Canadian humour
there) again with the winningest Coach in Ar.FL history, who says he’ll Coach
‘til he’s “90”. Don’t’ be against the Jack LaLanne of the Arena Football League.
They lost several players in the offseason, like versatile Stony Case (QB-FB/LB,
who hardly played last year, though. They won’t miss him O’Hara, the ex-starter
with the old Toronto Phantoms has played in five ArenaBowls before and Stafford
is the best in the business. Wiren is a very solid DE/TE-OG and can play FB as
well. He may have to go fulltime there – for now. If he can stay healthy, the
running game is sound. The receiving w/ Freddie Solomon, Jr. (son of the
Tampa/Miami/San Francisco Super Bowl vet) is a terror. But losing versatile Clif
(that’s right; ne ‘f’) Dell BACK to Divisional rival Orlando and Jay Gruden, who
won Marcum four ArenaBowls as a QB in the ‘90’s, might hurt this club down the
stretch. Most Ar.FL teams get a few guys hurt in the first few weeks of the
season and the NFL E schedule will start three weeks sooner, so replacements,
from the NFL ‘AAA’ camps will come sooner this year. The Defence needs a face
lift but let
Kinney escape to
Columbus anyway – maybe a mistake. Wiren and Mitchell are good pass rusher.
Predicted finish: 11-5-0,
Conference Finals.
Columbus Destroyers, Grand Rapids Rampage, NYork D’s. Coaches:
Destroyers, Doug Kay (ex-Hawai’i Associate H.Coach, Rampage, Sparky McEwen, D’s
Weyland Harding: These three clubs will battle for
the last playoff spot – Grand Rapids and New York should thank
their maker that Arizona is in the League! New York w/ ancient Aaron Garcia is
ready to be overhauled. Aside from a good pass receiving
Unit and C/NG Marcus ‘Snowball’ Owen, they aren’t good enough anymore. Columbus
seems the best of the bunch and besides TE/NG Kelvin Kinney, they acquired QB
John Kaleo from L.A. Grand Rapids picked up some good players in Ray Philyaw,
Aaron Bailey and others but it’s too little too late. Better Luck next year."
