I
am sure I don’t need to give reason why I chose who I chose above. Most all
Arena Football League fans will know who these guys are, how long they played
and how many ArenaBowls they got into and won, how many M.V.P.’s , et, al they
won. Also, many non-Ar.FL fans may question why Michael Lewis, Tommy Maddox,
Oronde Gadsden, et, al are not here; simple. They only played one yr. in the
League)
2006 Arena
League Season Preview – The Teams:
Georgia Force, 5th season. 0-1 in last year’s ArenaBowl.
Coach: Doug Plank, 2nd year. QBs: Matt Nagy, Glen Gaunnt, Sam
Clemons. Other key coaches / players: K Nelson Garner (Univ. of James Madison in
VA.), WR/DB Chris Jackson, OS Jamin Elliot (ex-Falcon), WR/LB 6’5” Derek Lee, DS
Earthwind Moreland (3-yr. NFL E vet), WR/DB Ricky Parker, FB/LB Robert Thomas,
Olm/DLm Bruce McClure, Offencive Coordinator, Steve Thonn [pronounced ‘Tawn’]. A
Look back to ’05: Poor Coach Plank. Fourth straight ArenaBowl loss. Three as
Defencive Coordinator of the Arizona Rattlers’, Danny White’s last year there as
Coach, then a heartbreaking 51-48 last second loss to Elway’s Colorado Crush,
who had lost three straight themselves at midseason. This year, even with the
(at least) temporary loss of former QB Jim Kubiak and OS Troy Bergeron to NFL
tryouts / NFL E, and Bergeron also played in the Las Vegas senior NCAA allstar
game (good gestures for the hard luck kid, who had to drop out of college to
play Arenaball to support his family), the team is loaded.
They had the second
best running game in the League last year and have really not lost anyone except
formerly injured starting QB Kubiak and Bergeron. Chris Jackson got out of the
cesspool known as the Rampage in a midseason trade and had left another team
that couldn’t get to the ArenaBowl in recent years, the L.A. Avengers, to
solidify a very good receiving corps. Nagy, a QB who had lost (or been screwed
out of) previous QB jobs in New York and Carolina (now defunct). Nagy was
everything Plank could’ve wanted in a ‘so-called’ “replacement starter” at pivot
last season. Nagy will make the loss of Kubiak negligible. Nagy could have a
career year with the addition of the ex- cross-town Falcon, Elliot, who like
Jammi German, never did make it in the NFL despite much talent. Take Olm/DLm
Dary Myricks, also a hungry improving player and with McClure, the line is very
good. The best pass(&)rusher is ex-Cowboy NFL’r Thomas, near unstoppable on
short yardage.
This team is loaded and frankly first year H.Coach Plank should
have gooten Coach of the Year. This team is primarily owned by Falcons Art
Blank, who has done a bang-up job with both Pro Football clubs in GA! Mister
Blank Will have better luck getting a Championshsip out of these guys sooner than
with that Other team in that other League, thast he owns – the Falcons!
Predicted Finish: ArenaBowl Champs!
Colorado Crush, fourth year. ’05 ArenaBowl Champs. Coach: Mike Dailey,
third year here, Eleventh overall. 2-0 in ArenaBowls. QBs: John Dutton (2-0 in
ArenaBowls), Nick Rolivich. Other key players: WR/DB Ahmad Hawkins (Univ. of
VA.), WR/LB Andy McCullough (NFL E Champ Frankfurt ’99 M.V.P.), Olm/DLm Hugh
Hunter (ex-Eagle / CFL’r), WR/DB Willis Marshall (four Grey Cup rings in CFL,
most recently, ’98 w/ Red Garcia and Calgary), DB/WR/ KR Evan Hlavacek, Olm/DLm
Chris Heimberger (3-yr. NFL E vet), WR/DB Rashad Floyd, OS Damien Harrell
(ex-Toronto Phantom), Olm/DLm Senate Williams, FB/LB Rich Young. Outlook: So in
only their third season John Elway and Pat Bolen won it all, Indoors. Now comes
the harder part – repeating. The Georgia Force lok to be at this point (before
the season opener) The strongest competition on paper once again. But you still
have to line up and play the games! {Elway and Bolen’s Broncos found that out as
they were trounced in the AFC Championship by an overrated but motivated
Steeler’s team. The Crush should be fine until the ArenaBowl win all the solid
players/Coaches they have. Look for them to repeat as Conference Champs at
least!
Orlando Predators, 16th season. 2-4 in 6 ArenaBowls. Coach:
Jay Gruden (4-0 as QB and 2-1 As Coach in seven ArenaBowls). QBs: Joe Hamilton
(NFL/NFL E vet), Jake Eaton (CFL/Af2 vet). Other key players: DB/WR/QB Clif Dell
(three ArenaBowls in career), WR/DB Javarus Dudley, FB/LB Kevin Nagle, K Jay
Taylor (played two years ago for Gruden’s brother Jon in T.B.-NFL), Olm/DLm
Reggie Lee (has played in 4 ArenaBowls w/ Preds), Justin Cleveland & Henry
Taylor (Nashville last year, 5 NFL teams in 5 yrs.), DSs Jeroid Johnson & Kenny
‘The Glove’ McIntyre (4 seasons in NFL E, three ArenaBowls w/Preds, career
alltime leader in Arena League INTs w/67), FB/LB Idris Price, FB-TE/LB-DE Marlon
Moye-Moore, OS Jimmy Fryzel (huge rookie yr.), DB/WR Lin-J Shell. Yea, yea, yea.
We’ve heard it all before. THIS IS THE YEAR The Preds fall apart from lsing too
many free agents; WR/LB Cory Fleming, one of the best in League history, OS
Travis McGriff and FB/LB Rupert Grant have all left via one way or another for
green$r pastures in Kat-ville, TN. I good go on ad nauseum how many good players
have left this team in the last three seasons. And guess what? It really doesn’t
matter as long as ‘lil Jay Gruden (bro. Of ‘lil Jonny Gruden, of the NFL Tampa
Bay Buccs) stays on, even with a pretty good “offseason job”, that of coaching
Brian Griese, Chris (l) Simms and Tim Rattay, as QB Coach for the Buccs of that
‘other’ U.S. Pro League. But the Preds roll on…and on…and… last year they came
within a blown two-point convert try on a run by smallish Joe Hamilton v.
Georgia in the Conference Finals. Missed an eighth ArenaBowl did Jay and Co. and
miss it again they will this year, just barely. The biggest loos this team
suffered in the offseason was losing Coach Bret Munsey, the former Af2 Coach of
the Year and Ast.H.Coach/Defencive Coordinator, to the Conference Rival Philly
Soul. Munsey also took four players with him. It won’t matter heads-to-head
though. Gruden will have these guys in the running anyway. Predicted Finish:
Conference Finals again. Yawn…
Nashville Kats, 7th season. 0-2 in ArenaBowls. Coach: Pat
Sperduto (0-2 in ArenaBowls). QBs: Clint Stoerner, Leon Murray. Other key
players: FB/LB Rupert Grant, WR/LB Cory Fleming, WR/DB Darryl Hammond (Congrats
to the former Univ. of Virginia star – he becomes the first player in Ar.FL
history to compete in his 15th season), OS Jarrick Hillery, OS Travis
McGriff, Olm/DLm: Joe Miniucci, Carey Clayton, TE/NG James Barron (VA Tech), WR/LB
Jermaine Lewis, K Tony Dodson. The Kats Pat Sperduto and Preds Jay Gruden go
wwaayyyy back! To several ArenaBowl titles with Tim Marcum and the Tampa Storm
Dynasty of the ‘90’s (Why hasn’t VH1 covered that yet?). And both their styles
are very similar to their mentor, the ‘Darth Vader’ of the Arena League Coaching
ranks. All three are excellent judges of talent, are loyal to the players that
have helped win them many titles before and have similar Coaching styles. Expect
all three to be the Conference playoffs this year. last year Nashville played a
spoilers’ role by tying Dallas, 37-37 in O.T. But guess what gang? Like the
‘new’ NHL (and after all – we are talking abot Hockey-Football here…), no more
ties! Nashville who fired their good Offencive Coordinator, Trace Sullivan
following a 1-4 start, managed a very respectable finish at: 7-8-1. Credit Coach
Pat for keeping meddling owner Bud Adams (most hated man in Houston until the
NFL put a new team, the Texans there in ’02) in the luxury box. Sperduto has
been called a young Parcells in the making and has been to the top og the
mountain with this on again- off again club in the early 21st
century. He will get them there again but must do it soon as this club is very
aged. Predicted Finish: Playoffs for the first time since ’01.
Chicago Rush, 6th season. Coach: Mike Hohensee. QBs: Mike
Bishop (‘offseason’ property of the Toronto Argos, CFL), Matt D’Orazio (from
Columbus). Other Key players: FB/LB Bob McMillian, WR/LB Etu (guzundheit!)
Molden, Olm/DLm Nick Myers (Shagadelic, baby!), WR/DB Buchie Ibeh (I.R.) [team
just released 14-yr. vet QB Todd Hammel, 30,000+ Ar.FL Yds. passing, 400+ TDs.
What could be said for the Rush, ditto for the Preds and Kats. These Teams may
lose players to free agency (like for example, QB Ray Philyaw, the former
Hamilton Tiger-Cat backup, who signed with Grand Rapids) but still they soldier
on with an outstanding Coach like Hohensee, who has been affiliated with the
League for 20 straight years now, the Only man to be able to say that! Hohensee
played in several ArenaBowls as a QB when the League first got going and set a
record by becoming the Washington (formerly Maryland) Commandos Coach at the
ripe old age of 29 in 1990. He has been a H.Coach or Offencive Coordinator
since. Losing Hammel and Philyaw won’t really matter as younger QBs D’Orazio,
who could still win the starting job yet and who was second in the League to
Bishop (who played @ Grand Rapids last year) in rushing seems to have the Ditka-Rush
(look for the new Ar.FL commercials!) poised to move up in the standing another
notch. Most of the roster are younger players, and with McMillian this should be
the best running team in League history. Think about it; McMilliam, Molden,
Bishop and D’Orazio running the ball. Now if only the young OL/DL holds up and
the kicking continues with Chris Gispert to be solid. The Special Teams did give
up some big plays last year but they still came a FG away from making their
first trip to the Las Vegas ArenaBowl, which is where ArenaBowl XX will be held
again this year. Predicted Finish: Deep in the playoffs, but not quite far
enough for Ditka to light a stogie yet!
Los Angeles
Avengers, 7th season. Coach: Ed Hodgkiss
(member of Mike Dailey’s ’99 ArenaBowl Staff) QBs: Brian Mann, Ryan Van Dyke.
Other Key players: KR/WR/DB Kevin Ingram, WR/DB Tommy Douglas, WR/LB Greg
Hopkins (one of the top 20 players in League history, also part of the ’99
ArenaBowl Champ Firebirds), TE/DE Silas Demary (formerly w/ Carolina and the
Destroyers and ’00 Norfolk Nighthawks Ironman of the year), K Remy Hamilton (2
games w/ Det. NFL in ’05), Olm/DLm Chris Butterfield [the pride of the Kansas
Pittsburgh St. Gorillas!], DS Damon Wheeler, Best in the League now at coverage.
Olm/DLm Aaron McConnell. The outlook for the ever-improving Avengers (how could
they be Avergers in their first year, ’99? What were they avenging?) still keeps
increasing. The Av’s have moved the process forward every year and you can
expect this team to have a home game in the Staples Centre this year. The
Avengers problem is not winning enough games at home in the regular season and
will do it this year with new QB Mann in the lineup. Gone two years ago was Tony
(l) Graziani and from last year’s squad, solid 1-0 in the ArenaBowl, w/ Tamap in
’03, John Kaleo, number three alltime in League history in career passing yards,
et, al. Mann is a good one and should develop rapidly. If Demary is back to form
after missing several games with injuries last year, they will mount an
impressive passrush. Demary is starting to be compared to Sam Hernanadez, John
Corker and James Barron, the best passrushers in League history. Hmailton is the
best K in Ar.FL and is back after playing briefly in the NFL last season with
awful Detroit. Ingram is great at KRs and the coverage is fine too. A sad note
of course last year was the death of Al Lucas, a great Arena League DLm/Ol, who
broke his neck in a game v. Dallas. There is still an Al Lucas Fund, which is in
Washington, D.C. with the Ar.FL players Association.
Predicted Finish: Playoffs, a home win then
Out.
Las Vegas Gladiators, 10th season. Coach: Ron James. QBs:
Craig Whelihan, Jason Fife, Rod Robinson (QB/WR/LB). Other key players: OL/DL
Alonzo (BiPolarBearDisease) Spellman [“Take me to Cincinnati!”], DB/WR Coco
Blaylock (sounds like the name of an exotic dancer!), TE/DE Steve ‘Kono’ Konopka
(former Toronto Phantom), WR/LB Junior Lord, FB/LB Marlon Jackson (ex-Frankfurt
NFL E player & Philly Eagle), DS Nick Davis, OL/DL Wilky Bazile, WR/DB Anthony
Arceneaux (brother and former player w/ Hawai’ian Islanders QB/WR/LB, Darnell
from St. Louis High School in HonoLulu), WR/DB Joe Douglas (several good teams
in several Pro Leagues), OS Marcus Nash. There could be trouble brewing in
Gamblin’ town for poor Coach James. He has been an Arena League player and Ast.
Coach for sometime, but a squierrly owner, who makes Clippers’ Don T. Sterling
look normal is demanding a berth in the ArenaBowl XX playoffs since the
ArenaBowl is here again, Jun. 11th, ’06.
James doesn’t have much room for error w/ only basically Whelihan there as
starting pivot. Whelihan, a former flop in the NFL is having a decent BACKUP
career in the Arena League but his starting days may already be behind him. He
has been in Pro Football since ’97, the year this team started in Ar.FL. Behind
him isn’t much of proven talent, but they do have three fine WRs to throw
to: Blaylock,
Douglas and
all-Arena, former Denver first round NFL pick washout, Nash.
The Line is solid with: Kono,
Spellman (just don’t let him on planes!) and Bazile (Where is Jerry Crafts?).
The Defence should be better than the last Two seasons if everybody stays
healthy. That’s a big ‘If’ in this Division.
Special Teams could be a real headache for James and his staff. They have lost
so many people to free agency (especially QB/H Dolezel, a great one) because of
the cheapskate owner! If all goes according to plan, the Ar.FL’s lenient 12
teams-makes the playoffs system should get these guys in. Every finger
and toe in ‘Vegas, from the Montecito to the Arena is crossed. A 9-7-0
Season could be just enough.
Good luck, Ron!
San Jose Sabercats, 12th season. 2-0 in ArenaBowls. Coaches:
G.M./Offencive Coordinator Terry Malley, H.Coach Darren Arbet (two time Coach of
the Year and 2-0 in ArenaBowls). QBs: Mark Grieb (former Scotland Claymore and
2-0 in ArenaBowls), Stony Case [not ready for the ‘StonyAge’ yet in Sabercat-land
but that’s probably when Sabercats roamed in San Jose]. Other key Players:
Hasbeen Barry Wagner, a 14-yr. Pro and one of the top 20 in Ar.FL history, OL/DM:
Chuck Reed, Joe Jacobs, Nikia Adderson, Aubrey Battle, Dan Loney. FB/LB Matt
Kinsinger, WR/LB Fred Coleman and James Roe (former Norfolk
St. player in VA), K Brian Schmitz, WR/DB Tremain Mack. There are
two ways
to look @ the Sabercats; the
water glass is half full or halfempty. This is REALLY an old, over-the-hill
team, even for Arena League standards and they keep losing young talent to other
Western teams.
Can Arbet and Malley, who are way under the salary-cap get these geezers into
one more ArenaBowl before it’s rebuilding time? Only this year will tell. I say,
I don’t think so. Grieb is still the best QB in the Division – though not by
much, and his backup, Case was a reserve RB/QB/LB in Tampa, who hardly played
last year. Case who also spent time in the NFL & NFL E looks to be on last (sea)
legs. Can he get it done if Grieb, one of the League’s best and easily in the
top 25 players in League history, goes down? I don’t think so. The depth is all
old guys! Where is the young talent going? Everywhere else. This team has almost
had too much success, almost too quickly. The real test for Malley and Arbet,
who are outstanding in their Coaching positions, will be this season. I don’t
think they will make the playoffs. Expansion
Utah and Kansas City look just a bit stronger. In fact, better
than anybody
in this League’s expansion
history. Predicted Finish: 8-8-0 and no playoffs.
Dallas Desperados, 5th season. Coach: Will McClay. QBs: Clint
Dolezel [pronounced ‘Doll-zelle’], Chris Griesen (NFL / NFL E / Af2 vet). Other
Key players: FB/LB Duke Pettijohn, WR/DB Will Pettis, OL/DL Evan Caldwell, WR/LB
Andrew Layton, OS Dialleo Burks, OL/DL Jeff Chase, OL/DL James Cannida, OS Bobby
Perry, WR/DB Terrill Shaw, WR/LB Jason Shelley. The outlook for this team, which
has been in a two yr. tailspin is looking up for a change. Acquiring QB
Dolezel in the offseason cost Jerry Jones, Jerry, Jr. and Shy Anderson, team
owners a fortune in the offseason. But it could prove to be worth every penny if
the Desperados can get into the ArenaBowl which is always a possibility with
Dolezel on hand. The receiving is great with Pettis, the best in the League @
his position, Shelley and Burks, a solid NFL E vet. The running game could cause
them headaches if Pettjohn get hurt – again. Orlando knew something when
they let him get away. As long as this one of Jones teams doesn’t experience the
K problem that the NFL Cowboys did, they’ll challenge for the ArenaBowl.
Predicted Finish: Conference Finals and more passing records for Clint!

Second ArenaBowl QB gets NFL
H.Coaching job: Congratulations {I guess?} are in order for former Dallas
Cowboys Ast. H.Coach /Offencive Coordinator Sean Payton, who becomes the third
former Arena Football League player to become an NFL H. Coach (the other two
were Marty Mornhingweg [Detroit], another former ArenaBowl I QB, and Jim Bates
(Miami) who just resigned as Green Bay Defencive Coordinator, after not
getting the H. Coaching position with the Packers that he just interviewed
for.
Payton will Coach the Travelin' Saints (Can we call them New Orleans
again yet? Or is it 'Meadowlands', or is it 'San Antonio', or is it 'Baton
Rouge' or is it 'Shreveport'?) Also, the New York Jets shot themselves in the
foot with a low budget choice for H. Coach with Eric Mangini, who just started
shaving every day, a couple weeks ago. There are 700+ better qualified Coaches
to get a shot at Coaching in the NFL, but I guess a deaf pig finds an accorn
every once in a blue moon, eh?
