All Arena Football League team previews are now up!
The start of
my
Af2 team Previews, 2007 8th Season!
On the Radio weekly during Arena season with Gabe Morency on Sirius Hardcore,

Moose Salzer
All Arena Football League team previews are now up! Have a read below.
Week
Two Game Balls:
1) Damien Harrell, Colorado, WR
2) Andy Kelly, QB, New Orlean
3) Shaun King, QB, Las Vegas
4) Tony Graziani, QB, Philadelphia
5) Kyle Moore-Brown, OL/DL, Colorado
Week
Two Notes: I was on with Sportsrage Host Gabe Morency again on Thursday night /Firday
morning. We did satisfactorily well in week one, regarding the points spread
which is something I care nothing about when I make my weekly picks. I did get 8
of the first 10 game results right though. Last week on his 39th birthday, New
Orlean QB Andy Kelly not only became the first QB to throw 800 Pro
TDs, but he threw 8 more this week in New
Orlean first home game/win since before Katrina tore up the big easy. Colorado
Centre / NG Kyle Moore-Brown has now started 198 straight Arena Football games,
which is of course an all-time
record.
Other Indoor Football News: UIF, NIFL Previews-Teams: UIF
("AAA"): Two-time Defending Champion Sioux Falls, South Dakota (Perfect) Storm,
17-0-0 last year.
Billings Outlaws, Fayetteville Guard, Wyoming Calvary, Bloomington (MN) Extreme,
Colorado (Fort Collins) Ice [Expansion Team], Lexington Horsemen, Ohio Valley
(WV) Greyhounds, Omaha Beef, Sioux Falls (IA) Rage, Rockford (IL) Raptors.
NIFL ("AA"): Fort Myers (FL)
Tarpons, Daytona Beach Thunder, Cincinnati Marshalls, Miami Vise, Palm Beach
Cools, Tri City Ranchers, San Diego Shockwaves, Buckingham Bulls, L.A. Lynx,
Columbia (GA) Lions, Pamona Riders, Denver Aviators, Pueblo (NM) Pistols,
Beaumont Drillers, San Antonio Six killers.
The United Indoor Football league plays for the attractive 'United Bowl' title,
while the hanging-on NIFL plays for the Indoor Bowl. Good luck to all 32 of
these less than Af2 teams in their respective races this year. I am predicting a
three-peat for the Sioux Falls Storm over the Billings Montana Outlaws in the
UIF Championship.

Two Picks! All Arena Football League team previews are now up! On the Radio
weekly during Arena season with Gabe Morency on Sirius Hardcore, Channel 186!"
Moose
For my Week 2 picks refer below to Wednesday March 7 report!
Arena Football League team
previews continued and now complete.
Colorado Crush.
Fifth year. City is 2-0 in ArenaBowls.Coach: Mike Dailey. QBs: John Dutton, Jose
Davis (CFL/NIFL), Other Key players: FB/LBs Rich Young (CFL/X-FL), Saul Patu and
John Peaua, OL/DL Chris Heimberger (NFL E), DB-LB
Devon Hughly, WR/DB Ahmed Hawkins (U.VA), Centre/NG
Kyle Moore-Brown,
OL Joey Hollenbeck (Seattle),
OS-WR Damien Harrell, the best in the League at his position, Dustin Barno,
TE/DL. John Elway's Colorado Crush face a cross roads season. They've released a
buch of good vets: ex-Calgary CFL Grey Cup winner
WR/DB Willis Marshall (got the break of a lifetime - he got picked up by
Dallas), WR/OLB Andy McCullough (former ArenaBowl M.V.P/NFL E Bowl M.V.P).
Sure, they'll save money but will they have enough talent to help get John
Dutton his third ArenaBowl win? When people talk about the best QBs ever in
Arena Football, they'll have to start mentioning him as the Tom Brady of this
League if he wins one more Championship. (See San Jose's Mark Grieb, same
profile) Last year the Crush were spoiled by their own success of the year
before, as Elway's troops survived a bad 2-14-0-1 first season to win the
ArenaBowl in they're third year. But last year they couldn't afford a backup QB
until week 5 because they maxed out the salary cap ro resign all 18 returning
vets from the Championship squad. They didn't have to do it again, but may be
taking a great risk letting McCullough and Marshall go. They have 4 Pro Football
Championship rings between them. Predicted Finish: 10-6-0, playoffs, but a lose
in round one or two.
Georgia Force.
6th year, 0-1 in the AreanBowl. Coach: Doug Plank, THE number #46, as in 46
Defence, 0-1 in ArenaBowls (also 0-3 in Arizona as Defencive Coordinator, the
poor guy. QBs: Chris Griesen, Joey Hamilton (?). Other Key players: QB/RB Ryan
Vena, OL/DL Bruce McClure, FB/LB Fita Tu'ua, OL/DL Earnest Allen. The Georgia
Force shocked a lot of people when they announced that open the year, they would
start NFL/Ar.FL/NFL E vet journeyman Griesen, who's LB brother Nick, plays for
the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, at QB over Georgia Tech star Joe Hamilton, who's
been with the Orlando Predators (lost the ArenaBowl last June v. 7-9-0
Chicago!), Tampa Bay and Indianapolis in the NFL.
Hamilton may just carry through with his plan to retire! In case of that
Arena-Af2 vet Vena, who can play two backfield positions, is on hand. Vena, a
six foot, 226 lb butterball, is an outstanding runner and is scrappy. Griesen
looked awful good and Hamilton's contract isn't guaranteed either. Really, with
team in the murderous Southern division, they need all the help they can get,
just to keep pace with Jay Gruden's Predators and Nashville. Plank will have the
best conditioned team in the League, again, but there is something missing from
the '05 ArenaBowl runner-ups.
What is it? Only time will tell. Predicted Finish: 9-7-0, playoffs.
Arizona Rattlers.
16th year, 2-3 in 5 ArenaBowls. Coach/G.M. Gene Nudo. QBs: Shredrick Bonner,
Nick Rolovich (U.Hawai'i), other key players: WR/DB Randy Gatewood, WR/LB Cosmo
DeMatteo (Ar.FL/X-FL vet), Asi Faoa (San Diego-Af2), TE/DLm Wendall Gaines,
TE/DL Kelvin Ingram, FB/LB Bo Kelly, Vince Amey, DL. It appears this year, the
Rattlers have gone to the well once too often. Nudo has been one of four men on
planet earth to have been with this League since it's inception; along with Jim
Foster, Mike Hohensee and Will McClay (that statement will win you a bar bet -
no Tim Marcum in '90 or '94...).
Nudo knows how to win and Bonner is one of the games' greats. Kelly may
eventually catch Bobby McMillian in career rushing yeards, but I
hope he doesn't but these guys are just too long in the tooth to make a run any
more. Too many 69-65 losses will befall them, but ti's not too unreasonable to
not to expect one more winning season before they bring in the wrecking ball.
Wayne Gretzky should have invested in these guys several years ago instead of
the losers he's now tied up with! Predicted Finish: 7-9-0, no playoffs.
Las Vegas Gladiators.
11th season. Coach (Their fifth in four years!), ex-CFL/Ar.FL player and Af2
Champ Coach, Danton Barto (remember the Memphis Mad Dogs), QB: Brian Jones,
Shaun King. Other key players: WR/LB Moey Muntz, DB R.J. Oliver, FB/LB Frank
Carter, DB Tyronne Sanders, OL/DL Jerome Nichols, OL/DL Steve Morosko, OL/DL
Zach Rupp, OS Darryl Jones (Hawai'i - Af2), Derrick Arceneaux (Hawai'i-Af2). The
Good News is there is a new Coach in town. That's also the bad news, since it's
the fith one in four years! He brought with him his Af2 Championship playbook
and Af2 QB. He also has a pivot on the roster (King, or queen, depending how he
plays) who has a Super Bowl ring...Is that enough? Obviously not.
Owner Ferraro continues to play craps with this once well loved Jersey-ite
franchise and keeps spinning the roulette wheel, changing Coaches and QBs like
some change underwear; let's see: there was Ron James, Mike Hold, Frank
Kaege and at pivot they managed two 8-8-0 seasons with Clint Dolezel - which is
not easy to do. Marcus Nash set a Pro Football record one year with 154 catches,
but that and the last two ArenaBowls being played here in 'Vegas are all the
former Michael Lewis lead 'Red Dogs' (like the beer) have to show for their stay
in sin city. Will it change this year? Not until they get an owner that is not
trying to be the Donald T. Sterling of the
Ar.FL - before The Donald saw the light and the Clippers got good recently!
Predicted Finish: 6 or seven wins would be nice for the long suffering fans of
this self-maligned franchise!
Orlando Predators.
17th season. Alltime Ar.FL Team high seven ArenBowl appearances, 2 wins. Coach:
Jay Gruden. QBs: Shane Stafford, Jake Eaton. Other key players: OL/DL Reggie
Lee, Jim Sodano, Justin Cleveland, WRs: Clif Dell (four ArenaBowl teams), Jimmy
Fryzel, DBs Lin-J Shell, FB/LBs Kevin Nagle, Marlon Moye-Moore (U. Maryland
turtles/Af2-Charleston), K Jay Taylor. Look like the Preds are getting thin -
think again. It appeared last season that after that 4-0 start that ole Jay-boy
had lost his Coaching touch. Don't you beleive it. After a horrific Clint
Dolezel inspired ass-whipping, 87-61, worst in this storied franchise history,
the Preds won 10 of their next 11 and put the "they're dead" stories to bed.
With a vengeance! Big news in the offseason was the jettisoning of a shocked
ArenaBowl runner-up '06 pivot in Joe Hamilton (Ga.Tech.). The Predators stole
their neighbor to the South's QB, Stafford, and spent big bucks resigning most
of their main vet talent from the season before! Wow! Gruden and Co. weren't
kidding when they said they'd leave stone unturned to turn over a new leaf and
spend, spend, spend like Donald T. Sterling finally did. Expect big things out
of these guys again, like maybe that 8th ArenaBowl appearance but I think that
Dallas will nip 'Em in the playoffs this time. Predicted Finish: 11-5-0, Second
round playoff loss." Moose Salzer

Two Picks! Arena Football League team previews continued! On the Radio weekly
during Arena season with Gabe Morency on Sirius Hardcore, Channel 186!"

For my Week 2 picks refer below to Wednesday March 7 report!
Arena Football League team
previews continued!
Los Angeles Avengers.
8th year. Coach: Ed Hodgkiss. QBs: Sonny Cumbie, Brian Mann. Other Key players:
TE/DE Silas Demary, DS Damon Wheeler, K Remy Hamilton, WR Jamine Blaylock, DL
Jermiane Brooks, OL/DL Jerry Callahan, OL/DL Evan Cardwell. Another team hard to
figure. Since the death of one of the League's best players, Al Lucas, in April
'05, this team has had no breaks. QB Sonny Cumbie played pretty well since he
was new to the sport last spring but took a beating. Now without WR/LB Greg
Hopkins and WR/DB/KR Kevin Ingram both retired, the new guys better get on the
same page with Cumbie, who also had a try out with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens
last summer as well, soon.
The Avengers have a murderous schedule and young owner Casey Wasserman's
patience may not last all season if things don't stay around .500 in the
standings early. They probably won't, but 8-8-0 would be very respectable - as
long as they keep their outstanding Offencive minded Head Coach and K Hamilton!
Georgia Force, 6th year, 0-1 in the AreanBowl. Coach: Doug Plank, the number
#46, as in 46 Defence, 0-1 in ArenaBowls (also 0-3 in Arizona as Defencive
Coordinator, the poor guy. QBs: Chris Griesen, Joey Hamilton (?). Other Key
players: QB/RB Ryan Vena, OL/DL Bruce McClure, FB/LB Fita Tu'ua, OL/DL Earnest
Allen. The Georgia Force shocked a lot of people when they announced
that open the year, they would start NFL/Ar.FL/NFL E vet journeyman Griesen,
who's LB brother Nick, plays for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, at QB over
Georgia Tech star Joe Hamilton, who's been with the Orlando Predators (lost the
ArenaBowl last June v. 7-9-0 Chicago!), Tampa Bay and Indianapolis in the NFL.
Hamilton may just carry through with his plan to retire!
In case of that Arena-Af2 vet Vena, who can play two backfield positions, is on
hand. Vena, a six foot, 226 lb butterball, is an outstanding runner and is
scrappy. Griesen looked awful good and Hamilton's contract isn't guaranteed
either. Really, with team in the murderous South division, they need all the
help they can get, just to keep pace with Jay Gruden's Predators and Nashville.
Plank will have the best conditioned team in the League, again, but there is
something missing from the '05 ArenaBowl runner-ups. What is it? Only time will
tell. Predicted Finish: 9-7-0, playoffs.
Tampa Bay Storm.
21st season, 5-2 in seven ArenaBowls for the last of the original franchises
(first four years in Pittsburgh). Coach, Actually, The Coach: Tim Marcum, 19th
season in the League, 7-3 in ArenaBowls (winning with Denver, Detroit and Tampa
Bay). QB: John Kaleo, Stoney Case, B.J. Symons. [Case can also hold for FGs and
XPs and play RB]. Expect Symons to replace Case ont he practice squad this
year]. Other Key players: OL/DL Earnest Certain, WR/DB Demitris Bendross, former
Saskatchewan & Ottawa CFL player, double-dipper, FB/LB Jarrod Penwright,
WR-RB-LB Barry Wagner (if he makes the team), WR T.T. Tolliver, WR/DB Lawrence
Samuels, one of the all-time great along with Wagner (again, if he makes the
team for his 15th season), Centre/NG A.J. Ricker, DE-FB Rodney Filer. Welcome
back, John Kaleo! Now how much do you have left
in the old gas tank of athleticism? Kaleo helped these guys win the ArenaBowl
with Pat O'Hara, who is now the QB Coach again, back in '03.
Ah, but they also had TE/DL Kelvin Kinney in the last season he double-dipped
and also played in the CFL, helping Edmonton win their 12th Grey Cup then
(they've since won their thirteen, too!). Marcus 'Snowball' Owen from the New
York D's will help a porous Offencive Line which got last year's QB Shane
Stafford killed on the way to 7-9-0 and for Marcum, a first time No playoff
Dance ticket punched! It had to be embarrassing for the greatest Coach in League
history to watch the playoffs from T.V. at home with tow other 7-9-0 teams going
into the post season - And 7-9-0 Chicago drank champagne out of the Cup!
Stafford, arguably the best picot in the League, unless your name is Clint
Dolezel, flew the coop for hated 'War on I-4' rival Orlando and thus the
playoffs may be a distant memory again. The Storm are an old team, especially
for Indoor Pro Football standards and they may have gotten Marcum's old buddy
Kaleo too late. Predicted Finish: 8-8-0, no playoffs again. Sorry, Coach Tim!
Grand Rapids Rampage.
10th season. 1-0 in the ArenaBowl. Coach: Sparky McEwen (no, no - stop
laughing...it really is 'Sparky'!) QB: Chad Salibury (ex-Toronto Phantom pivot),
Matt Sauk, Mark Radlinski (Af2 vet), Other key players: FB/LB Chris Avery (once
a Norfolk Nighthawk), LB Johnny Balous (Af2), Brian Gowins, K (last link here to
the ArenaBowl '01 winner, along with Avery), WR-OS Rob Mager, WR Freddy Solomon,
Jr., OL/DL Jason Berger, TE-DL Winfield Garnett. SO FAR, SO GOOD. The Rampage
won their first game of the '07 season over John Elway's Colorado Crush, 44-42.
But it won't be enough to eventually save good ole' Sparky's job. Sooner or
later the ax will fall. It may eventually fall on the great Tim Marcum as well -
years from now.
Without much depth, this cash-strapped team, that is one 8,000+ attendance
season away from dropping (a la the
old Iowa Barnstomers) down to Af2, better hope and pray that the Af2 guys like
the great Rob Mager, develop quickly. This team has enough talent to carve a
10-6-0 or at least 8-8-0 season just on how they look on paper, but their depth
is paper thin itself. Just wait for the injuries to hit - and they will. Sparky
has a radio show in Grand Rapids and the fans love this franchise. But the days
of Clint Dolezel, Rickie Simpkins, et, al is lonnnnggg over! But at least they
got Chris 'Soultrain' Ryan back. Now is only they had Mike Trigg! Ah...the
memories...Predicted Finish: 7-8-1, no playoffs.
Dallas Desperados.
6th season. 0-1 in ArenaBowls as city. Coach: Will McClay. QBs: Clint
'Gunslinger' Dolezel, Nick Browder. Other Key players: Josh 'Zeus' White, FB/LB,
Cal.U., Farrington h.s., Honolulu, Oah'u, HI, Hawai'i Islanders - Af2., Rickie
Simpkins, TE-DL, Marcus Nash(vegas), FB/LB Duke Pettijohn, Jeff Chase, Centre,
Will Pettis, best three-way player in the League, unless L.A.'s Ingram comes
back..., Terrance Dotsy, TE/DL/STs, Bobby Keyes, DB, Bobby Perry, WR/DB. Man,
maybe Clint Gunslinger was right! When interviewed before game One in New York,
Dolezel (one-oh as ArenaBowl QB with Grand Rapids in '01) said he EXPECTED THE
Desperados to go 16-0-0 in the regular season...Cocky? Not if you can throw 105
TDs in the regular season. Clint, 37, says he wants to play until he's 40, or
until he throws 1,000 career TDs, the most in Pro Football history! Don't bet
against it! This team is loaded and Coach Will McClay was one of the League's
best when he played - he won four ArenaBowls with Detroit in the early
nineties/late eighties.
With Pettis, Jones and Perry, who needs trouble- making Bobby Sippio, who HAS
gotten his act together in Chicago. Hey, they couldn't have won that ArenaBowl
last year without him. Dallas got derailed by
Jay Gruden's Predators in the playoffs last year as Doleszel threw only one TD
against the best Defence in the League and two INTs. He was also outplayed by
Joey Hamilton, usually his punching bag. Early in the '06 season, Dallas hung a
87-61 loss on Orlando in the 'Jungle', where the Preds play their home games.
But it was payback time big-time in the playoffs. Then Orlando got pasted by a
TD (8 pts,) by upstart Chicago in 'Vegas in ArenaBowl XX. Dallas should win the
ArenaBowl, but as for tying or breaking the Miami Dolphins perfect 17-0-0
season, like the Soprano's say: "Fugghetaboutdit". Prediction: ArenaBowl XXI
Champs, 16-3-0.
Columbus Destroyers.
9th year. Coach: Doug Kay (former 1980-82 Assoc. Coach U.Hawai'i). QBs: Matt
Nagy, John Rayborn. Other Key players: TE/DL Kelvin Kinney, WR/LB Marcus Knight,
FB/DE Brad Geetis (2-yr., formerly San Diego-Af2), WR Damien Groce, DB
Jerald Brown, WR/DB-OLB Darcy Levy, WR Tony Locke, K Pete Martinez. Coach Doug
Kay, an experienced Arena Football Coaching and has finally got himself a
winner. Kinney is the best pass rushing specialist in the League now that he
doesn't have to play fulltime as TE anymore. In getting ArenaBowl runner-up QB
Nagy, the Destroyers have assured themselves of a winning season, which is what
these hard luck guys need.
They have been the Clippers of the Ar.FL - a good potential team with mucho
talent, but just can't seem to get the most our of it and advance in the post
season - or even get to it. Only two losses in the last three games last year
dropped them to 8-8-0. After that, in the offseason, QB Kaleo left to return
home to Tampa and Tim Marcum's bad breath. Kay is overdue and so were the
Clippers in the NBA, until last year. These guys will be the Clippers of the
Arena Football League this year. Look out, opponants! Predicted Finish: Surprise
team of the year, Coach of the Year for
Kay and 10-6-0 mark and a playoff win!
Chicago Rush.
6th season, 1-1 in ArenaBowls as city. Coach: Mike Hoehnsee. QBs: Matt D'Orazio,
Woody Danzler (who can also play four other positions), Brett Dietz (Af2), Other
Key players: FB/DL Charlie Cook, FB Bob McMillian, the League's all-time leading
rusher, DL E.J. Burt (injured), DeJuan Alfonzo, WR/DB/ST'r, K Dan Frantz, WR/LB
Etu Molden (injured), #99 John Moyer, '04's Defencive player of the year, DB
Jeremy Unertl. Will the glass slipper fit this year? Probably not. The Rush have
lost way too many players due to free agency and Mike Bishop, their backup QB,
was on the team that beat them in game one, Kansas City. This team is beat up
pretty bad already.
I know, I know; they're 'Grabowski's - they'll make due. If they didn't have
great ownership, a really good and underrated QB in D'Orazio, who once
alternated here in with the Roankoe Steam, of Af2 and a great Coach in the
sixth winningest Coach in Ar.FL history, 7-9-0 would be a good make for this
year. They'll scrape by into the playoffs but will get beat in the first round.
9-7-0 would be pretty special with all the injuries they have." Moose

Week One Results:
Dallas 60, New York 7. A new all-time Ar.FL record.
Kansas City 54, Chicago 41. Major Upset!
Georgia 69, Arizona 65.
Utah 63, New Orleans 61.
Columbus 58, Nashville 56, opening night, Thurs.
Orlando 52, Tampa Bay 27
Austin 57, Las Vegas 36.
Grand Rapids 44, Colorado 42
San Jose 66, Los Angeles, 58
Two Records, One New in Week One:
1) Worst blowout in Arena League history, Dallas up by 53-0 count early in the
third quarter and finished with 60-7 score in New York. Worst home loss ever by
Ar.FL team also.
2) First fumbled two-point convert run in Ar.FL history (by K.C.'s Michael
Bishop, QB-RB) returned for two-point defencive convert (by Chicago).
Week One Game Balls:
1) Ray Philyaw, QB, Kansas City
2) Clint Dolezel, QB, Dallas
3) Jerel Myers / Sam Simmons, WRs, Kansas City
4) Kenny McEntyre, DS, Kansas City
5) Charles Frederick, RB/OE Kansas City
Week One notes:
Orlando Coach Jay Gruden hit his 80th career win. He's now seventh in Arena
League history. Kansas City hit an Arena League all-time high with five rushing
TDs in a game. OE Charles Fredrick, who needs a haircut, gained four rushing TDs.
There was no quit in the defending Champ Rush, as Matt D'Orazio, who just signed
a contract extension until '09, threw a TD to Bobby Sippio, the former Af2 M.V.P.
('03) AS TIME EXPIRED. Great effort by Sippio as well. Before game one, Chicago
signed former Ottawa / Montreal CFL and ex-ArFL DB Jonathan Orway to a one-year
contract. Ordway has played for Tampa Bay in the Ar.FL as well.
One The Radio with host Gabe Morency: As in the past few years, I was on with
Gabe Morency, formerly of Montreal Sports Radio, now on Sirius Channel 186 in
Toronto, as we picked the Ar.FL winners (we agreed on eight out of nine picks)
and Previewed the 21st season of Arena Football action. I will be back on in the
coming weeks at Thursday night / Friday morning at 12:05-12:15a.m., EST. The
Arena League started the season with a bang Thursday night as visiting Columbus
beat hometown Nashville, 58-56, game completed before Gabe and I went on. I will
ask young Aaron, Morency's producer to get me my Hawai'i Five-0 intro music like
I had with SportsRage producer Jimmy (The Concordia Stinger) Spencer. Now to
some bad news, Indoor Football style:
I
would like to send our sincerest
condolences to the family of Javan Camon, a starting DB for the NIFL ('AA')
Daytona Beach Thunder, who was killed in an Indoor Football game last week,
Monday night. He was struck, helmet to helmet by a Columbus, Ga., Lions player
on a blocking play and driven into the sideline dasher boards, which are
four-and-a-half inch thick high density foam rubber over hockey boards. The
helmet to helmet shot broke his neck, killing him instantly, paramedics of the
Volusia County medical staff said after the game. Life saving methods were used
for 10 minutes after he lay motionless on the carpet to revive him and he was
pronounced dead on arrival at Daytona Beach hospital thirty minutes later.
Javan's death is the fourth in the twenty-one history of Indoor Football.
In April of 2005 Los Angeles Avengers DLm/OL Al Lucas broke his neck and died
instantly when he dove to tackle a Kick Returner in a game for Los Angeles at
the Staples Centre, and the Kick Returner rolled over his neck. In 2002 in the
'A' Utah Indoor Football League, a Utah Lions player, a 35-year old OL, playing
his first game of Indoor Pro Football, collapsed and went into respiratory shock
and died. In a 2004 Af2 game, an eventual 7-7 tie between Bakersfield and
Wichita, Third year FB/LB Julian Yearwood died of heart failure in the
Bakersfield bench area. In another Indoor Football League in the late 1990's, a
League that no longer exists, another player, a QB died of heart failure. Also,
in an Arena League game in 1992, a Detroit OLm broke his neck and was partially
paralyzed for a few days and recovered and played two more years.
Arena League Rule Changes for season number twenty-one:
1) Coaches no longer allowed on the field,
2) Free Substitutions, all positions,
3) Ability to return missed two-point converts for 2 defencive points,
4) 22-men can dress from 24-man rosters.
Week Two Picks
Grand Rapids OVER Las Vegas
Chicago OVER San Jose
Nashville OVER Philadelphia
Columbus OVER New Orleans
Dallas OVER Tampa Bay
Arizona OVER Utah
Colorado OVER Kansas City
Austin OVER Georgia
Orlando OVER Los Angeles (could be an upset, above)
Bye: New York (they'll need it after last weeks mauling!)
Arena League team Previews continued:
Kansas City Brigade.
Second year. Coach: Kevin Porter. New Ast.H. Coach: Chris Siegfried, Winningest
Coach in Af2, won ArenaCup7 last August in Puerto Rico with expansion team. QBs:
Michael Bishop, who also plays RB and is on loan from Toronto of the CFL, Ray
Philyaw. Other Key players: Clay Rush, K, James Jordan, Sam Simmons, Jerel
Myers, Cecil Moore, WRs. OE/RB Charles Frederick, RBs Chris Demaree, Dawan Moss.
OL/DL B.J. Cohen, Colin Bryant, Ed Ta'amu (Oah'u, HI, Ioloni High School), TE/DLm
Jamarr Ward, Arrion Dixon, LBs: Byron Douzart, Joseph Oniwar, DBs: Isiah Trufant,
Kenny McIntyre, DeShane Dennis, Denario Smalls, Travis Coleman, from here
in Hampton, (U.), VA.
The 2nd year Brigade expect to do much better than last year's 3-13-0 mark. And
they will. They are now 1-0 after beating the Defending Champ Chicago Rush in
week one of the Arena League's 21st season, convincingly, 54-41. New Ast.H.
Coach Chris Siefried, who used to play for Coach Porter, an ex-K.C. Chief, in
Af2, will have Ray Philyaw back at the controls, after last year they waffled
through ancient Andy Kelly, second year man Chris Sanders (gone in last cuts
along with Jonathan Quinn, an NFL vet). Philyaw has been a solid journeyman and
barely beat out the much more physically talented Mike Bishop, who doubles as
the Toronto Argonauts backup pivot during the CFL season. Bishop should be
better and is already the best running QB in League history but has been an
enigma, consistency wise.
If K Rush solidifies that position, the Special Teams coverage will be among the
League leaders. Newcomers to O,D/ST's, Larrell Johnson and Chris Cook should
make an impact in the Lineman rotation. This team will be much improved, but
teams QB'd by Philyaw usually don't go very far in the playoffs. The upset win
in game one was nice but the fans will holler loudly for hometown guy Bishop,
who once backup Tom Brady and was a Heisman runnerup at Kansas St.
Predicted Finish: 8-8-0 and no playoffs, but Porter could be Coach of the Year
Candidate.
Utah Blaze.
Second Year. Coach Danny White, the League's second alltime winningest Coach,
151 wins, 15th year. QBs: Tali Ena, Jason Gesser (Washington U./Saint Luois
High School, Honolulu, Oah'u, HI, Calgary CFL), Joe Germaine. Other Key players:
WR/LB Tom Pace, OL/DL Hans Olson, WR Justin Skaggs (Washington-NFL/Orlando-Ar.FL/Amsterdam-NFL
E), OL Brandon Eaton, U. Hawai'i, '05, OL/DL Dwayne Tauili'i (HI.), OB/KR
Scott Dreisbach, FB Chris Floyd, OL/DL Elliot Harris, OL Jason Hillard, DB Matt
[Action] Jackson, WR/DB Aaron Boone (no relation). Danny White's troops
completed a fairly good first year in the League as White returned an old
'favor' by knocking out the League's alltime winningest Coach Tim Marcum's Tampa
Bay Storm from the playoffs with a matching 7-9-0 mark. They finished 7-10-0 as
the Blaze fell at Arizona in the first round of the playoffs, as Andy Kelly
couldn't stand up to the pass rush of the Rattler's, who White almost tried to
buyout once (!) White Coached his first 13 years in Arizona and lead the
Rattlers to five ArenaBowls, winning two. But his contract was allowed to expire
after his Rattlers lost three ArenaBowls in a row from 2002-04.
White's ego got away from him a bit last year, his first Coaching the new Blaze,
as he suspended and laster fired Arena League Hall-of-Fame player, Ast.Coach
Flint Fleming, who helped White win the '97 ArenaBowl, as TE/DE. Fleming played
in six ArenaBowls and won four with Tampa Bay, Detroit and Arizona. Fleming was
accused of being overheard in the Utah locker-room questioning White's
abilities, after he leapfrogged ancient Kelly at pivot over youngsters who were
dinged up, Germaine and Gesser come playoff time.
Fleming, if he did say it, was right. Kelly was 38 last year and is 0-2 in
ArenaBowls and is back in New Orlean playing out the string. This year White's
troops have a different look and with the new substitution rules, it'll be
interesting to see if getting new K Steve Vitetech from Las Vegas can shore up
the main glaring weakness for this teams Special Teams (or as Marv Levy used to
correctly call it, 'The Kicking Teams'). Whtie has a slew of hawai'ians here,
some of whom live in the Salt Lake City area. His connections have also brought
in ex-Hawai'i OL Brandon Eaton, one of the bet prospects around to pair up with
Hans Olson, Merlin's nephew. If Jackson can help a patched up secondary, these
can guys will hang tith anybody in their tough division. Predicted finish:
9-7-0, playoffs, one round and then home.
Nashville Kats.
8th year. 0-2 in ArenaBowls. Coach: Pat Sperduto (also 0-2 in ArenaBowls). QBs:
Clint Stoerner, Josh Harris. Other Key players: OL/DL James Barron (VA Tech U.),
FB/LB Eric Arevalo, OL/DL Marcus Johnson, OL Brandon Phillips, DB Keyou Craver,
FB/LB Tony Flicken, WR/DB Moses Harris, FB/LB Jonathan Jackson, WR/DB Byron
Jones. The hardluck Nashville (Nashvegas?) Kats are a hrad buch to figure. Out
of the League for four seasons, they have a slew of ex-Las Vegas Gladiators on
their roster. How well all these new players jell is going to determine a lot.
Stoerner, until he was hurt, the ex-Dallas Cowboy, Amsterdam Admiral and
ex-baseball pitcher is still a work in progress but was really coming on strong
late in the year last year. In the off-season his best friend on the team and
backup QB Leon Murray (also NFL E vet), signed with New York and played terrible
in the '07 season opener.
The D's run a whole different style Offence. If Stoerner can remain healthy,
they have a real shot in the division and Conference they are in to make a run
at getting back to the franchise
third ArenaBowl. But they did still look sort of weak on Defence in the
pass-rushing department, except of course for Barron, the mainstay. If
they jeel quickly enough they have a real winner with Sperduto at QB. If
cheapskate owner Bud Adams (still the most hated man in Houston!) will get some
of the ight priced ex-Tennessee Titans he just let go in here (how about Travis
Henry at rb?), they might just make a run THIS YEAR! Predicted finish: 9-7-0,
playoffs." Moose

Ar.FL - American Conference:

Ar.FL - National Conference:

West - Arizona, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Jose, Utah
Ar.FL Trivia...The Number 13 Unlucky? Not for the following QBing greats of the
Ar.FL! Clint Dolezel, Kurt Warner and Shredrick Bonner have all gone on the
ArenaBowl wearing number 13. The difference? Only Warner, who has gone on to win
the Super Bowl (in two appearances), and two NFL M.V.P.s, that HASN'T won the
ArenaBowl!
The best number 13 in NFL history? Why Dan Marino, who also didn't win his
League's Championship! Arizona's Bonner also went to the Super Bowl but as the
number 3 QB of the Atlanta Falcons (inactive) as Denver won the game, 34-19.
Team Previews Continued:
San Jose Sabercats: 13th season. 2-0 in ArenaBowls. Coach: Darren Arbet.
QBs: Mark Grieb, Scott Rislov, Craig Whelihan. Other Key players: OL/DL
Aubrey Battle, QB Nick Rolovich (on waivers from Arizona/University of Hawai'i),
OL/DL Jeff Bolton, WR/DB Bobby Keyes, WR/LB James Roe,
FB/LB Pete 'Superman' Lazare, from the ArenaCup runnerup Green Bay Blizzard of
Af2, WR/DB John Roberson (X-FL in '01, CFL '02), OL/DL Jon Rodriguez (NIFL/IFL/UIF), WR/DB,
Antwaon Savage, WR/DB Jacoby Shepherd.
A lot of new faces for two-time Ar.FL Coach of the Year Arbet to work into the
lineup. Aside from the topheavy QBing corps (which oc course will be lead by
Grieb, once again, who is 2-0 in ArenaBowls), the main deal will be just staying
healthy all year. The Sabercats released many vets at the end of last season
when they didn't have much gusto left in them. In comes a plethora of new guys
from many different Leagues. Leave the mix to Coach Arbet and they will not only
contend once again for their Division but will probably win it and make another
run for the title.
They are 2-0 in ArenaBowls and have the highest lifetime winning percentage in
League history for any franchise. They have a great organization and will
continue to win. Will they come close to ArenaBowl XXi in New Orlean? Yes, but
they will fall a little short of winning it. They only need a few more RBs."

Austin, New

More team previews coming!
"Austin, New Orlean, New York 2007 season Arena League Previews!" Moose Salzer
Austin: The Wranglers were purchased by ex-NFL DB/WR/PR Deion Sanders late
last year and have been in a constant state of change since then. Gone
especially are starting QB John Fitzgerald, to a H. Coaching position in 'AAA'
Af2, in Texas and Coach Skip Foster, who left via free agency to find more
suitable employment with the Columbus Destroyers on Doug Kay's staff. The
underappreciated Foster didn't take too kindly to Sanders remarks about his
Coaching ability (and his Richie Pettibon-like physique!) and decided that he'd
move on after the season was over. The Wranglers, competitive since day 1,
in 2004 (and certainly a better club than Philadelphia, with it's revolving door
Coaches, and Katrina-stricken New Orlean - see below), but never could
quite get over the .500 mark, despite one narrow playoff loss. Foster knows the
inside Pro game inside and out and Sanders doesn't! Sanders even made many
longtime fans nervous when he talked of a comeback (as KR/DB). Not that these
guys with Tacoma Fontaine, the best returnman in the business need him! There
are many new faces in '07 training camp and the roster has yet to be decided.
But barring an unforeseen trade, I don't expect this team to make the playoffs.
Not with a roster of mostly ex-Af2 players. Sanders will learn in a hurry, this
ain't the NFL.
New Orlean - Any season would be good for the V's after getting wiped out
last year with their Arena in shambles from Katrina. So back in business
are Owner Tom Benson (boogie)'s N.O. Arena boys and they have a very good Coach
in Mike Neu (not the guy who challenged the UN over wearing their insignia
several years ago)! Back are ancient QB Andy Kelly (career 42,000+ passing
yards, combined; Ar.FL/NFL E) and FB/SLB Dan Curran. Also back is solid Ast.
Coach Tiana Illi, Jr. Despite the doubts about their being really back, there is
cause for optimism since ArenaBowl XXI will be in New Orlean on July 29th, 2007.
New York - The D's have a young Coach with more Red Bull than X's and O's
and like New Orlean, an ancient QB in Aaron Garcia. Like Kelly (0-2 in Arena-
Bowls, Garcia is a very good but not great one; he's never EVEN been to an
ArenaBowl. It won't happen this year either. Despite a very fine Centre/NG in
333-lb. Marcus 'Snowball' Owen, WR/DB Will Holder and OS/WR/LB Mike Horacek
(ex-NY Jet/Packer-NFL), they'll be treading water come playoff time. Neither New
York or New Orlean will make the playoffs this year, but wait until 2008, fans!"

From Moose "Two of the former Stalwart teams of the League, the Memphis Xplorers
and San Diego Riptide have left the Af2. The 2005 ArenaCup Championship Xplorers
will sit out a 'One Year Dormancy' Agreement. San Diego jumped to the 'AA' NIFL
and the Macon (GA) Knights have opted out of business. The League requires a
team that is taking off a year to sign the dormancy agreement so they don't just
jump to a lower Indoor League like the Tennessee Valley Vipers did several years
ago (UIFL).
The Arena Football League will start it's season on March 2nd and Af2 on March
30th. I will hopefully be attending two games in Af2 on March 30th and March
31st
(Huntsville, Ala. and Tulsa, (OK, birthplace of Indian Jack Jacobs). ESPN's
coverage of the Ar.FL will be headed by Mike Golic and his ESPN Mike in the
Morning Partner Greenberg. Also Ron 'Jaws' Jaworski (except for Philly Soul
games) and Merrill Hoge will announce games. Expect more names in the next few
weeks.

This could lead the windy city to celebrate it's second Pro Football
Championship in six months. The Ar.FL Chi-town Rush won ArenaBowl XX back in
late June. The last time the same city won both US Pro Football Championships
was in '03 with the Tampa Bay Storm and Tampa Bay Buccs. ArenaBowl XXI will be
in the rejuvenated New Orlean Arena, where Tom Benson (Boogie) gets his Ar.FL
game on again this year after a Katrina induced absence last ('06) season.

From Moose "Now on to the Controversy reported this weekend! The Af2 ('AAA'
Indoor Pro Football League) has added six new teams for the upcoming eighth
season. Five of them are from two other Indoor 'AA' Leagues. A recent flap
developed over the signing with the Big Brother Arena League of three 'Import'
players from the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It seems that WR Andrae Thurman,
who's dad played in the Ar.FL twenty years or so ago (and Andrae was recently
cut by Dallas), DLm Ron Warner (San Jose) and QB Ryan Dinwiddie (Georgia) all
signed Ar.FL
contracts
without telling their respective Ar.FL teams that they were still under CFL
contracts. Ed and Winnipeg G.M. started a name calling contest with the Ar.FL.
Thanks to 'Blue Fan' on total-cfl.com for
pointing out Ed Tait's article from
the Winnipeg Free Press.
Here's what Ed didn't say. It's doubtful that Warner or Dinwiddie will even make
Ar.FL team final opening day rosters. What Offensive position can Warner play
and what Defencive position can Dinwiddie can play? In Arena football you have
to be able to play Offence/Defence/Special Teams to make the team's rosters.
Warner and Dinwiddie have played pretty well in the CFL, they are former NFLers.
I doubt very seriously either will make the opening game day roster of San Jose
and Georgia, two of the more talented teams in the League. Dallas only had
Thurman in mini-camp an he was cut already. Ed and Winnipeg G.M. B.Taman need to
calm down. They should be calling their now "apparently former?" players "Bush
League" for violating their CFL contracts!" Moose Salzer

The Big news out of New York and Chicago, where the Arena Football Leagues are
headquartered is that the best little old Football League to come out in the
last 21 years has just signed a Mega-mega-mega deal with Programming and
Co-Ownership with the League that first brought them to us via T.V., Eastern
Sports Programming Network.
Also in a separate deal, the part Larry Csonka Owned Versus, who broadcasts
Larry Csonka's two highly rated outdoor Hunting/Fishing/Travel shows, 'Hunting
For the Holidays' and 'Larry Csonka's North to Alaska'. Terms were not announced
but it is believed to be as much as five times what the cheapskates at NBC
wanted to keep the Arena League pidgeon-holed in the dead XFL (one game hit
wonder NON-League) time slot. The Arena League will be back on March to
August with some tentative talk now of the Af2, with part Larry Csonka-owned
Alaska Wild franchise set to debut, maybe in 2007 as well.
The Af2 may move to Feb.-Jun., which would set my schedule better as well since
I travel to games for MYKwebTV then. Best of luck to the best alternate Football
League to the CFL out there in 2007 and beyond...Oh, before I forget, ArenaBowl
XXI will be in revamped New Orlean, LA this year in Aug. The ArenaCup site is
yet to be determined, but if Zonk Productions has it's way, it could be warm
Anchorage, AK in June, which would be six years sine I've been there. Aloha and
