A
interview with MVP Eli Manning the Giants QB from
NFL Media! Super Bowl XLII News Conference
Phoenix
,
Arizona
– February 4, 2008
(on what traits separate this Giants team from others he has played
on in previous years) “I think we just had a great will on this team
– just a great group of guys. There was something special about this
group. We were determined and we had great faith in ourselves. We had
leaders across the board in every aspect. Everybody knew their role and
their responsibility. No matter what we’ve been through, I think
it’s helped that a lot of the players have been together for the last
three or four years. We’ve just learned to deal with adversity and
learned how to overcome mistakes, a bad play or a disappointment, and
put it behind us and forget about it. We just had total faith and
confidence that no matter what is thrown at us, we can handle it and we
can overcome it.”
(on
what it is like seeing his big completion to WR David Tyree) “I did
(see the highlight) last night. When I got home, I wanted to see it. I
hadn’t seen David Tyree’s catch. I kind of saw a little bit on the
field, but didn’t really get to appreciate what a great catch it was.
People were asking me how I got out of that jam I was in, and I really
don’t know. They were pulling me down. I felt them holding me, but I
never felt anybody pull me to the ground. I stayed alive and I saw
David in the middle of the field. I gave him a shot to make the catch,
and (it was an) unbelievable catch. For him to catch that ball – kind
of hold it against his helmet – I think he pulled back and guys
(were) swiping at the ball. It’s just a great individual effort by
him.”
(on
being here after all this team has been through this season) “I think
it’s just a great tribute to this Giants team, the organization and
coaches for continuing to have faith in ourselves and in the team that
we can make a change. We can put everything that’s happened behind us
whether it’s good or bad, and just be focused on the next week.
That’s what we were able to do. We never lost our confidence. We
never lost our belief that we could make a big run. At the end of the
season, we were playing our best football. That’s what you want to be
doing. At the end of the season, you want to be at your best. We were
able to do that. We got hot at the right time going into the playoffs.
We played, really, five great games at the end of the season, the first
being against the Patriots the last game, and then the four after that
going into the playoffs. That’s what you want to be able to do.”
(on
what will stick with him about the final comeback scoring drive)
“Just everything about that drive. We had a lot of big plays. Amani
Toomer had a big third-down catch. We had a fourth-down conversion, a
fourth-and-one conversion. Steve Smith on third-and-ten. You could see
the end zone, we were getting close and we still had a lot of work. He
had a great catch on the sideline to be able to get up the field and
get the first down, and get out of bounds to stop the clock. The
offensive line was doing their job protecting, and everybody had their
part and their role. [
New England
] had been playing zone, keeping two safeties back and just playing a
little conservative through that whole drive. Finally, I knew they’d
come after us. They came out with a blitz and had one-on-one with
Plaxico Burress. That’s a match-up we’re going to take every time.
He ran a great route, got wide open and made a great catch.”
(on
how his life is different this morning than it was when he woke up
yesterday) “I’m a Super Bowl champion. That’s the difference. It
doesn’t change my attitude, my personality, or even my goals for next
season. It’s still the same. I’m happy today, I’m fired up and
I’m going to enjoy this moment. You still want to do it again. You
still want to have this feeling again. It’s hard to say that now
because you’re still enjoying it now, but you have to have the same
commitment to playing football. I’ve got to become a better
quarterback. That’s my goal. Toward the end of the season I was
playing well, but I’ve got to do it over a whole season and cut down
on my mistakes, and try to work on that this offseason.”
(on
if his parents will have another child to try to keep the Super Bowl
MVP trend in the family) “No, I don’t think so. They have some
grandkids from my oldest brother Cooper, so I think they’re putting
in their input on them.”
(on
the post-game conversation he had with his brother Peyton, last
year’s Super Bowl MVP, and what he did after the game) “Yeah, I
talked to Peyton. He came into the locker room after the game and he
was excited for me. Obviously, he knew what I was going through and
what the team was going through, having won the Super Bowl last year.
He was just fired up and said that the play to (David) Tyree will go
down as one of the great plays in NFL history. He was just excited. I
saw highlights of him jumping up when we got the touchdown throw to
Plaxico (Burress), and he was excited. Last night after the game, I had
a lot of family friends in town – a lot of high school buddies and
college buddies all made the trip out here. So (there were) a lot of
high fives, handshakes and hugs. (I had) a lot of family members in
town, so it was good to be around them and good to be around your
teammates. After the game, there’s so much chaos, so you really
don’t get to see all your coaches and all your teammates in the
locker room. So I kind of went around last night looking for everybody
and congratulating everybody on their role in winning the Super
Bowl.”
(on
how much sleep he got last night) “Not much sleep. I finally got into
my room and I had to turn on the TV and watch some of the highlights,
and watch the game again. When I finally made the commitment to get
some sleep, I just kind of sat there with my eyes wide open, replaying
plays in my head. I don’t know what I’m going on right now – just
emotions and excitement from last night.”
(on
his early-season shoulder injury) “Early in the season in the first
game against the Cowboys, I did hurt my shoulder. It was just a mild
separation. I missed practice a couple days. I knew it wasn’t that
bad. I threw on it after I hurt it in the
Dallas
game. I said, ‘Hey, just give me some days and let me do everything I
can to get this thing well.’ I didn’t want to miss a game. I want
to be out there if I can help this team, if I could help us win. I
practiced a little bit that Friday and felt I could play. Yeah, it was
sore for the next couple of weeks. During practice, any time we had a
deep throw, I couldn’t make the throw. I’d kind of say, ‘Hey, I
would have thrown it to the post,’ but I’d take the five-yard check
down. Probably after three or four weeks, it felt fine. I was able to
make all of the throws. I don’t think it affected me as the season
went on.”
(on
the possibility of playing against his brother Peyton and the Colts in
the Super Bowl) “It would be fun to be back to the Super Bowl.
That’s the way I look at it. If it happens to be against the Colts,
then that would be a fun game to be a part of. Again, it would be fun
to be back and have a shot to do this again.”
(on
head coach Tom Coughlin’s evolution this season) “I think Coach
Coughlin has always done a great job of coaching this team and getting
us well prepared. He
studies extremely hard. He
puts us in the best position every game to go out there and play our
best. I think this
year, he understood we had great leadership amongst our players.
He put faith and trust in us that the leaders, the guys on the
team, would help the young guys get focused on what we needed to do.
He’d kind of tell some of the guys in his (leadership)
council, a number of guys he would talk to, he wanted us to spread his
message to the rest of the players, where it’s not always coming from
the coach. It helps
sometimes to have your leaders talking to guys and getting messages
across. It comes over
sometimes in a better way, I think.
He understood we had a good group of guys who wanted to win and
were dedicated to this team, and he let some of those guys be
responsible for leading the younger guys and taking over.”
(on
if this team could be good for a long time) “I hope so.
I think we have a great group of guys on this team.
We’re very close, we have fun, we enjoy working hard, we enjoy
preparing and doing everything for football.
I hope we never lose that drive.
Just because you have success and you win a championship
doesn’t mean you stop for a year, or you become content with what
you’ve done. If
anything, I think it should make you strive even harder or more to try
and get here again. You’ve
had this feeling, you’ve had this taste and you don’t want it to
leave. But, we’re going to have to work even harder and better,
and that’s our goal, to become a better team.
Once we get back to working in March or April, it’s going to
be about, ‘What can you do this year?’
Last year is behind you, and we’ve celebrated for that month
or two that you have off, and now it’s back to work to see if you can
do it again.”
(on
younger quarterbacks winning the last few Super Bowls) “I figure
it’s not just based on the quarterback.
It’s based on being on a great team, having the right players
in the right situations, and coming into an organization that is
committed to winning, that’s going to get you the right players and
have the right coaches and commitment to doing everything they can do
to win. That’s what
I’ve been fortunate (to have). Our
defense has been playing outstanding.
To hold the Patriots to 14 points, they deserve so much credit.
They did a great job on them.
And then, we had a number of guys and quality, big-time players
on this team that made plays and put us in a situation to win.
The quarterback is always going to get credit for wins and
losses. That’s part of the nature.
But, it’s about the whole team coming together and winning
games.”
(on
his plans for the next two weeks) “Just try to enjoy this.
This next week, we have the parade in
New York
on Tuesday. Everybody’s
looking forward to it. I’m
sure
New York
will throw a pretty good parade for us.
After that, it’s been a long season.
Just get away and relax, recharge the body a little bit, and
take some time off to visit with friends and family.
I don’t know when we report back to start off-season training.
Coach Coughlin will have all those details.
Hopefully, we get a little break.
Definitely enjoy the moment, enjoy the off-season.
It’s a rare opportunity that you end on a high note.
Only one team gets to end with that good taste in their mouth,
after a win in the Super Bowl. So,
enjoy it, but then come back even more hungry next year.”
(on to whom, other than
himself, he would award Super Bowl MVP honors) “If I could give it to
the whole team, I would. To
win a championship, everybody has to do their role, and everybody has
to do their part. Our
entire defense and that defensive front, the way that they got after
Tom Brady and the way that they were able to get pressure on him, no
one has been able to do that all year.
The Giants’ defensive staff and the way those guys played,
they all deserve it. David
Tyree, Plaxico (Burress), Amani Toomer and Steve Smith – we had so
many guys with big plays during the game, and that’s what it takes.
You never know who is going to have that opportunity to make a
play. When the guys’
numbers were called, they made every play that was out there to be
made.”
(on
if he ever wondered if perhaps
New York
was not the right place for him) “No, I never doubted myself.
I never lost confidence. As
a quarterback, I think that’s the most important thing, that you
never lose confidence in yourself.
You’re going to go through a lot.
When you’re not playing well and when you’re losing games,
they’re going to look into everything you do and dissect it – my
demeanor or how I am on the sidelines, and my personality.
But I’m very comfortable in my own skin.
I am the way I am and I wasn’t going to change.
I love being in
New York
. I love my teammates, my
coaches and the organization.
I knew I was in the right place.
It just takes time. I
knew this is not an easy game, and this is not an easy position to
play. The longer you work
and the longer you stay committed to it, things will start happening.
Finally, we started playing good football this season.
I still want to become a better player, and that’s what I’m
going to keep working at.”

Super Bowl I. Green Bay 35 (.548) Kansas City 10 (.464). Dr John
Murray's excellent report and MPI,
Mental Performance Index.
The MPI or Mental Performance Index is the first system of scoring
developed in sports which includes in the scoring key mental factors
such as pressure management, reduction of mental errors and focused
execution. It was developed by licensed clinical and sport performance
psychologist
Dr. John F. Murray in 2002 to
show the extreme importance of mental factors in sports. It is much
more accurate than the final score and other statistics in showing how
one team performed relative to another team. It has almost perfectly
estimated the relative performance of the teams before each of the past
5 Super Bowls. Dr. Murray's MPI forecast has also beaten the official
Super Bowl spread 4 out of 5 times now. He has appeared on hundreds of
radio and television shows, and the forecast has also appeared in
hundreds of articles. Why all the focus, energy and interest in this
topic? Because it so clearly demonstrates the importance of mental
factors in sports.

Oh Moose is not happy
that the Colts won. I am happy that the AFC team won and the Colts are
one of my equal 2nd favorite teams.
"Super Bowl XLI
Review! Da Bears blew it!" Moose Salzer
Give credit where credit is due; The misnamed 'Indianapolis'
Colts found their in the Moon over soggy Miami. I still am mystified at
Chicago Bears Coach Lovie Smith for keeping Rex Grossman in there until
the bitter end after such a great start;
Milestones: No team in
Super Bowl history either even; started a Super Bowl with a Kick return
TD (Devin Hester's 7th of the season, total, an NFL record) or with a
faster score. The Colts who were last in the NFL (32ND), set an NFL
record by winning a Super Bowl with one of the worst Special Teams
units to ever play in the game!. With 0:06 gone, Chicago up 7-0.
Colts Ricky Proehl
ended his 17-yr career with another Super Bowl win. I'll give Peyton
Manning and Coach Dungy Credit too. Colts are NFL Champions. Game
Balls:
1) Devin Hester, KR, Chicago
2) Brian Urlacher, Bears, LB
3) Colts RBs J. Addai and R. Rhodes, 264 total yds. Offence" Moose

Super
Bowl XLI Preview: Indianapolis Colts (15-4-0) v. Chicago Bears
(15-3-0), Miami, Pro Player Stadium, First Sunday of Feb., 2007:
Rex Grossman and his
troubled counterpart across in the other locker-room can now relax -
for now. But at game time one of these pivots will lose big-time in
XLI. Grossman, Manning, former Bear Jim McMahon, David Woodley, Ben
Roelithsberger are probably the worst QBs to ever play in Super Bowl
games and some of these guys have actually won the NFL Championship.
Hey Troy Aikman was on three winners himself, but anybody with any
intelligence knows that Steve Beuerlein and Bernie Kosar basically won
two of those Super Bowl trophies that Jerry Jones has in his office.
But back next, next Sundays game (two weeks from now, one of two first
black American Head Coaches will go home disappointed.
In Offence, Colts Tom Moore (started as a Pro Football Ast. Coach in
the WFL in 1975 with Jacksonville), who has been saddled with making
Peyton into a REAL NFL QB the last nine years will have his hands full
with the Bears Defence that caused the fiery New Orlean Saints Offence
to fumble/throw Int four times in it's own territory, that lead
directly to four Chicago TDs.
The Bears Offence is lead by Virginia's Thomas Jones at RB and former
Carolina WR Mushin Muhammad, both of whom have already been to Super
Bowls, Jones with Tampa Bay and Muhammad with Carolina. The Colts
counter with Super Bowl vets Brandon Stokely and Ricky Proehl (another
ex-Panther), if healthy and reliable Marvin Harrison. TE Dallas Clark
got open surprisingly easily v. New England who's Defence was just
tired. San Diego and RB LaDainian Tomlinson gave them all kinds
of headaches the week before. How the Patriots let that 21-3 lead slip
away will be debated for many months to come in Patriot-land. The
Saints had by far the best season of their star-crossed 40 year career
but how Chicago's Defence plays in this game will show everybody how
real the Bears are as a potential Championship Team. Bob Sanders, who
was dinged up in the Colts win over Pats has been a major factor in the
playoff turnaround of the Colts' Coordinator Ron Meeks Defence.
On the Chicago side,
Ron Rivera, who interviewed for several vacant Head Coaching jobs
recently, should be Assistant Coach of the Year. If the NFL doesn't
have an award for this they should make one up!
Prediction: Does Indy have enough to get by Da Bears. No Way. I really
kept waiting for the bubble to burst on the Windy City Boys, but it
appears the NFC is stronger than the AFC this year. 8-8-0 Carolina
almost made the playoffs and thye have the second best Defence in the
League to Chicago. Statistically, it should have been San Diego, but
thanks to Parker and Kaeding, Marty (New) Ball got derailed. Should
give him plenty of incentive to come back strong next year, eh,
LaDainian? This should have been San Diego v. New Orlean. We're stuck
with Chicago v. Indianapolis, which by the way is the closest
geographically that two Super Bowl Teams have ever been, as AFC-NFC
Conference Rivals in the NFL's biggest game (about 400 miles from
Chicago to Indianapolis, one state over!) Chicago Bears 28,
Indianapolis Colts 15.

Seattle Seahawks! It was a great day here in Calgary but not a great
game! Post game quotes direct from NFL Media!" Myk Aussie

Unfortunately did not make this years Super Bowl. I had a great day in Calgary watching the Super Bowl this year with many great CFL Stampeder fans. For lots of great CFL MYKwebTV which includes past
and future NFLers

It was a great day but not a great game
as the Steelers win. There has been a lot of talk on the sports radio
shows since the Big game about the very controversial refereeing
decisions including the Big Ben touchdown and the offensive
interference call on Seahawks Darryl Jackson. Either way the Steelers
won because they made the most of the opportunities. Seahawks
definitely had their chances but obvious missed field goals and some
horrid drops by Tight End Jeremy Stevens were some of the reasons that
cost them winning the game. Seahawks coach Mike Holmgrem now back in
Seattle complained today Big-time about the refereeing. Hmmm a NFL fine
will probably be coming to Mike. Maybe he was right but maybe not!
That's the way it goes.

"Super Bore XL Report – Congrats to the Pittsburgh Stealers (no, I
didn’t misspell that by accident!)" Moose
Super Bowl XL was fine for about the first third, as
Seattle lead 3-0. But the Seahawks were robbed of two TDs by bad calls
on alleged ‘Offencive pass interference calls that were so bad I don’t
think and Af2 Ref would have called them. All week ESPN (especially
ex-Bronco LB Tom Jackson) have railed that the Commissioner's Office at
Park Ave. should issue some sort of apology, et al, to the Seahawks for
the blown calls in the game. Amen to that. I have no problem with any
NFL playoff or Super Bowl Championship game when the best team wins and
certainly Pittsburgh DID get rooked on bad call v. Indianapolis. Jaws Jaworski
still says the Colts are the best team in the League – bullogna! Bill
"Ego" Cowher can have his Super Bowl ring for this Clunker. How about
the idiot Bill Leavy, the guy who gave Vinny Testeverde, a player I
really Do like that TD a few years ago and now he gives
Roethislisberger one in this game too. Unreal!" Moose

Even though I am not in
Detroit this week I have enjoyed listening to many of the great sports
radio shows including The Jim Rome Show on Calgary's The Fan 960, Sportstalk with Mark Stephen Calgary QR77
and of course SportsRage Team 990 Montreal and Internet with Gabriel
Morency.
Memories! Jim Rome kept saying all week how amazing the massive radio
row is in the Media Centre. I agree and in some ways I didn't miss not
being there that much seeing the Bronco's weren't in the Big game as I
kept thinking of the great times I have had in radio row the past 3
years during the whole of the Super Bowl week. A couple of my Super
Bowl MYKwebTV shows, show the massive Radio Rows.
From the reports below
you will see that I have tipped the Steelers to win Big over the
Seahawks even though I hope the Seahawks win! Refer to Moose, Scott
Baxter's and my argument/discussion below Jan 27 report. After the
Championship games I made my selection and decided not to be influenced
by the media talk/reports over the 2 weeks leading up to the Big game.
However a real interesting interview I heard was on QR77 with Mark
Stephen with the great CFL coach/manager Jim Barker. Jim had some very
good insight into the Steelers "erratic or somewhat concerning
preparation" up until Tuesday of this week. That made me think slightly
more towards the Seahawks but I am sticking with what I said, the
Steelers will win and I think it will be a Big win! Go Seahawks though
as I am a bit like what Mark Stephen says, "We have been forced to
watch many Seahawks games over the past 20-30 years here on the West
Coast of Canada, lots of them when the Seahawks were horrible".
Yeh I agree I've watched many Seahawks games on Fox over the past 8
years, or should I say I have watched "some of their games when I had
no CBS AFC choice" Let's hope it is a great game, Sunday 6pm Eastern
US/CDN time.
Warren Moon now in the

Warren along with Troy Aikman,

Day reports below!" Myk Aussie
STOCKTON &
JOHNSTON TEAM UP ON SUPER BOWL XL WORLD FEED. The FOX-TV broadcast team
of DICK STOCKTON and DARYL JOHNSTON will serve as announcers for the
world feed of Super Bowl XL on Sunday, February 5, the NFL announced
today.
Stockton will be providing commentary and analysis to international
audiences for the fifth
consecutive year, while Johnston will be making his fourth appearance
on the world feed.
The broadcast will provide game and color commentary with in-depth
information on the players,
coaches and history of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks
catered to an international
audience.
"It is a pleasure to have Dick and Daryl again lend their talents to
the world feed broadcast," said
CHARLES WHITE, NFL vice president of international media. "In the past,
they have delighted our
international viewers with exciting commentary and incisive analysis of
the game."
With more than 30 years of broadcasting experience, Stockton has seen
the impact of Super Bowl
grow. "Realizing the audience ranges from Americans traveling or living
abroad to hundreds of countries fascinated by this great event makes
broadcasting the Super Bowl each year a unique and special experience,”
says Stockton.
Johnston, a former running back for the Dallas Cowboys, is no stranger
to the Super Bowl. He won
three Super Bowl rings as the starting fullback for Dallas in 1993,
1994 and 1996. The Super Bowl continues to grow in popularity around
the world. This year’s game will be broadcast to 234 countries
and territories in a record 32 languages. ABC will televise the game in
the United States.
