Notes...Impressive starts for Grey Cup contenders Montreal &
Saskatchewan...B.C.'s Dave Dickenson Era starts w/ a loss as D.D. is awful rusty
having been from Calgary to San Diego to Seattle to Miami to Detroit Lions to
B.C. Lions in the last two ys...Renegades take of advantage of Danny Mac's
injury to beat Ti-cats @ Ivor Wynn...
The Flutie Bros. band was rockin' according to Eye-witnesses...Keiki Misipeka,
former Univ. of Hawai'i Warrior back made the Esks as reserve RB/ST gunner...He
played last season w/ arenafootball2's San Diego Riptide in game w/ Ryan
Leaf!..Speaking of (now) former arenaballers,
Kelvin Kinney is due to report to Esks in a few days...He'll need rest after
playing most of an exciting & exhausting Arena Bowl XVII, Sun. on NBC...I
still say he didn't score that TD they gave him, as he launched that ball into
the crowd for a 15-yd. penalty for unsportsman like conduct which sent his
coach, Tim Marcum into a tirade...Still Edmonton needs him, as their 'D' was
awful v. overrated Montreal Sat...Myk was there while I covered the Nighthawks
of Af2 in Norfolk...Al Reece, another 'D' linemen played Ar.FL this spring for
the Grand Rapids Rampage...Did 'The best damn sports talk radio show in
Honolulu' both Fri. & last nights...
Talked about the Hawai'ian connection to Super Bowl Wayne, Randy Kama'aina

Wed June 18, "Moose
me Nth American Footy Expert his detailed team by team 2003 CFL preview
continued! Stamps report is especially interesting!"
Myk Aussie
Calgary Stampeders...Caoch
Jim Barker...Five Grey Cup wins in 8 tries...7-11-0-1 record in '02. QB Marcus
Crandell is a very good QB. Where do we begin w/ why the Stamps fell so far so
quick...#1 Marc Boerigter left after the magical Grey Cup season of '01 for
Rose's NFL Chiefs...#2 his WR-mate Vince Danielsen retired to take a job w/ IBM
in Boston...#3 & #4 ("Not
printing that Moose" Myk)
#5 they threw $60,000 CDN down the drain on a has been RB
Larry Phillips, who will no show his 7th team that he won't throw a block or
catch a pass if his life depends on it...I could go on but I know Myk likes
Larry & won't print it. ("...Please
go on Moose." Myk)
It won't be any more for Barker on his 2nd CFL coaching assignment than it was
on the 1st in T.O. 4 yrs. ago...Simply put - who will Marcus throw to? ("Connell,
Blair, McDonald, Phillips" Myk)
Who is going to get the outside yds, Kelvin Anderson used to ("Phillips"
Myk) - Phillips is only
good @ inside running...That is when he's not pouting, which is only 98.9% of
the time, that or walking out on the team like he did twice last season @
Montreal. ("Valid
point re Larry walking out on team Moose. I believe Larry simply did what i
often do, he got caught up Cwoc Hunting in Kelowna on the way to Pammy's BC
Place. So he decided his body needed a rest ready for Playoff assault & as
we know now the Grey Cup victory" Myk
The only reason' Phillips barely got 1,000 yds last season is because the two
better backs in front of him, Mike Pringle, a true CFL legend & former
Hamilton '99 Grey Cup hero, Eric Lapointe both blew their knees out & there
was no one else to carry the ball behind what had to be the best 'O' line in the
league, by season '02's end! ("Larry
Phillips won the starting job before Pringle did his knee & he starred early
in 02 season" Myk)..
Can the St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins, Barcelona Dragons, San Francisco 49ers,
Florida Bobcats, San Jose Sabercats & Montreal Alouettes all be wrong?
Doubtful. And if Calgary can get to the playoffs w/ him as the main offensive
weapon then every (....deleted."Myk)
Besides three main guys fled to the NFL: Antonio Warren, James Cotton & Joe
Cooper... Predicted Finish: 5-13-0-1 - Dead Last...Sorry Myk & Marcus.
Ottawa
Renegades...Coach
Joe Paopao...No Grey Cup win or Appearances...4-14-0-2 record in inaugural
season of '02...Good news Renegades fans: Winnipeg, Calgary & Toronto really
don't factor in to the playoff equation this yr. , so the 'Gades will back in
the playoffs, pull an upset & Honolulu Joe will be coach of the year...No
foolin'...
G.M. Eric Tillman has done a superb organizational job & the staff of Paopao
&
Kauahi, the ast.H.Coach will get everything they can out of these guys...QB Dan
Crowley, once a Baltimore Stallion will lead the east in passing...On defense
the 'Gades sport one of the best Canadian LBs in Madison Univ. grad (here in
Virginia!), Kelly Wiltshire, who went to the '00 Grey Cup w/ Mont... John Grace,
LB, CB Jerald Vaughn, a great kick returner & ex-Arena leaguer, DL Pene
Talamaveo provide quality defense...
The 'Gades need a kicker to step forward that will get them through an 18 game
schedule...Last year because of injuries, etc. they played four or five
kickers...That can't happen again...Former Saskatchewan Gray Cup winning QB
Kent Austin has arrived @ the right time to tutor Danny Crowley, who is
immensely popular w/ the fans in the nation's capitol...The schedule is not
too tough this year as the teams in the east won't be as strong as their
Western opponents...Playoffs for sure but no Grey Cup until '04, when the game
is in Frank Clair Stadium...Fasten your seat belt, Scott & Gaven...And Go
Renegades!
Winnipeg Blue Bombers...Coach Dave Ritchie...10 Grey Cup wins...22 Grey
Cup appearances...QBs - Khari Jones, Pat Barnes, Brian Stallworth...13-7-0-0
record in '02...The Blue Bombers appear to have hit the proverbial brick
wall...They have sufficient talent but can't win the Grey Cup...One
reason that everyone in Canadian media seems not to either have taken notice
of or reported is the Khari Jones has set a three yr. record in CFL play of
throwing a monster 77 int.s since taking over the staring
job...That's way too much...
While everybody was wanting to hold a parade last season as K got close to Doug
Flutie's all-time CFL record 48 TDs (K threw 46) they failed to show he threw an
unconscionable 33 picks...Thank goodness for reserve QB Pat Barnes, from Joe
Paopao's defunct S. F. X-FL & two seasons w/ Vern Hippler's Frankfurt
Galaxy's three games off the bench in four weeks &the quickness of ace
return-man/ RB Charles Roberts, another of my Virginia mates & the power
running of ex-Eskimo/ Cleve. Brown & Wash. -NFL FB/RB/SB Mike Sellers...
League MVP Milt Stegall, who I had the pleasure of meeting @ the CFL awards
dinner/show last Nov. in '02, had a great yr @ WR & will get plenty of help
from ex-arena league/Bomber Robert "Flash" Gordon, who after two
broken arms will
constrate on only his CFL job... other quality WRs include Arland Bruce, Geoff
Drover, the 1st CFL player ever from P.E.I., Jamie Stoddard & Marcus
Howell...
The Linemen to watch on 'O' are: Elewonibi, Isibi & Mudge, '01 Linemen of
the yr...Denny Fortney, Doug Brown, Wayne Weathers & Honolulu's Inoke
Breckterfield make up the most potent DL...The real area of concern is the
secondary that constantly breaks down in the playoffs, except for the
outstanding Tommy Europe...they lost their best coverage corner to the Atlanta
Falcons 2 yrs. ago- CB Juran Bolden...Punter could be a major problem after the
retirement of
23-yr. CFL vet Bobby Cameron, Darren Bennett's hero...
Kicker Troy Westwood, one of the best ever also has a rep of going in the tank
during big games...It won't be funny if it happens this yr..
Toronto Argonauts...'02 record 8-12-0-1...G.M. Adam Rita, Coach Mike
'Pinball' Clemons...14 Grey Cup wins in 22 appearances...The Argos will be the
only thorn in the proverbial side of an excellent new Commissioner, Mr. Thomas
E.S. Wright, the former Mr. Adidas, Canada...The team that is perennially
ignored by most of Toronto's sports fans still ultra positive Pinball Clemons as
head sideline coach but even he & longtime friend & former teammate Paul
Masotti will wear out from the constant strain of trying to stretch those
bandaids, tape & baling wire to the bone to kepp these underachievers in the
very liberal CFL playoff race...
Last season Pinball w/ mostly 2nd & 3rd string types pulled a major upset,
24-14 over hometown Sask. in the 1st round of the playoffs. I mean there still
is some talent here in the presence of returning former Houston Texan RB Michael
Jenkins, SB Mike Morreale, newcomer QB, Damon Allen, Mike
O'Shea...Punter/Kickoff guy Noel Prefontaine has fled the coop to Rose's Kansas
City Chiefs in NFL. The team cut all three QBs from last yr.; Reggie Slack, who
signed yesterday for backup duty w/ hated Hamilton, Jim Ballard, who Pinball
argued w/ in the playoff loss on CBC v. Mont., & Opening day '02 starter
Stan Jackson...in other
words there's no back up, so Damon better stay healthy...
Johnny Scott will try once more to get another CFL season out of his ancient
body
@ DL & Adrion Smith should be OK on KRs but Darrell 'Mookie' Mitchell will
be worn out from being thrown to 80% of the time to keep this team in
games!" Moose, President "Friends Of The CFL, USA", MYKwebWORLD

CFL 2003 Season
Preview - Moose's fearless forecast By: Rich Salzer
The CFL is about to kick off it's 95th season & made the announcement of
KUMU
2 / AM 1500's Supertimes.com / Hawai'i 5-0 Sports last night in conversation w/
Reggie, Wayne & Randy (Kama'aina) Myamoto @ 12: 12 a.m., EST (6:12 p.m., HST).
After some difficulties on the hook up, I previewed the CFL's upcoming season
& told the audience that mykaussie.com is @ the Calgary airport getting
player interviews, etc. w/ the Grey Cup Champion Montreal Alouettes as we spoke.
Got a great e-mail from Myk about it this morning. So he's my last minute CFL
preview.
Saskatchewan
Roughriders...Coach:
Danny Barrett...2 Grey Cup wins, 14 losses in franchise history...QBs - Nealon
Greene, Kevin Glenn, Ian (Rocky) Butler...The magical Roughrider season of '02
came to a thud w/ the 1st playoff game in Regina since the Don Matthews days, in
a 24-14 loss to Pinball Clemons surprising Toronto boatmen...Pinball ran into
some kryptonite in the next round as the Als took out T.O., 35-18...It won't
happen again this yr. for Roy Shivers & Barrett's crew...This is '03 &
the Grey Cup will be in Regina...Myk & I will be there -his 5th & my
10th...
It brings back memories of the Stallions '95 win in the cold prairies of the
bread
box of Canada, my grandparents province...Back to the '03 'riders...QBs are
all strong throwers & runners...Sedric Shaw is a 1st rate RB...the coaching
staff the best in the CFL as a unit for a team that went 8-8-2-0 last
season...The riders have the best clutch kicker in the CFL in Paul McCallum, who
won a Championship ring as kicker/punter w/ Scotland in NFL E in '96...Corey,
#19 is the best kicker-returner in the league...
The secondary is also the best in the league...Things are falling into place
very quickly for the best young team in the league...Prediction: Grey Cup
winners, their 1st since 1989 in the Glen (Suit-man) Suiter days...Their last
Grey Cup
appearance was a 43-27 loss to Doug Flutie & the Argos before the NFL raped
that team of all it's good players except Pinball...The 'riders won't blow the
Grey Cup as a home game like Edmonton did last year...Possible opponents
include: Hamilton, Montreal or Ottawa from the east...More bad news for Toronto
- last place!
Hamilton Tiger-Cats...Coach
Ron Lancaster...15 Grey Cup wins in franchise
history, 29 appearances...7-11-0-1 record last yr...QBs - Danny McManus, Pete
Gonzalez, Dave Corley...The biggest problem for the 'Cats this yr. will be how
to replace both Darren Flutie, who is all-time CFL leading pass receiver &
his backup, Andrew Grigg, another good, quick one - they BOTH RETIRED!..QB Danny
McManus was in the best shape of his athletic career until last weeks
injury & should rebound from two of the last three seasons in which he threw
more interceptions than any quarterback this side of the 'Pegs Khari Jones...
In '00 Danny Mac, who has been sharp on CBC as an announcer last yr., threw 29
picks...Last season '02, Mac threw 30 int.s which probably lead to the Ti-Cats
late season melt down...But the defence is what really fell apart mainly on
account of injuries & lack of depth...When the smoke cleared only Philbrick
was left standing
on the starting D-line...The quickest remedy for the lack of pass rush was to
re-aquire Joe Sack-Machine Montford from the mess known in these part as
Toronto...This will help immediately...
In the kicking department, oldest kicker in the league now w/ Terry Baker &
Bob Cameron's retirement(s) is double- duty man Paul Osbladiston, a big time -
big game kicker...He'll have plenty of work...RB Ron Williams is outstanding, as
is SB Archie Amerson & S Rob Hitchcock, who'll start the yr. on I.R...I
still think Danny
Mac & coach Lancaster can make one more run to Grey Cup (their last was a
win in '99) & they won't be able to do it next yr.
B.C. Lions...Coach:
Wally Buono (still can't get used to hearing that,
eh?)...Grey Cup wins 4...Grey Cup appearances 7...'02 records 11-7-0-1...QBs -
Dave Dickenson, Spergon Wynn, Casey Printers. The Lions finally got rid of two
problems @ once by out-bidding everybody else in the CFL for all-star QB, former
Grey Cup winner & league MVP, Dave Dickenson...He really didn't want to go
to Cincinnati or Arizona anyway just to get his NFL pension did he?...Not when
he can be reunited with Wally, Kelvin Anderson (I bet Sugarfoot is upset about
that one!), et, al...
The Lions got rid of Damon Allen who slammed the club upon leaving & said he
won't go into the Hall of Fame as a Lion...Anyway he & T.O. are meant for
each other...V.P./G.M. Bobby Ackles, who was elected in CFL Hall of Fame in '02
shows he's not taking any prisoners by going out & acquiring the best QB on
the planet who was available...Dickenson & Wally will mean an attendance
boost of at least 10,000 fans per game...If this team gets near the Grey Cup
they could very well be the surprise team of the yr...
Last yr.'s C.I.S. star Jason Clermont showed he is the next Marc Boerigter...He,
Dave & Kelvin, since the retirement of Sean Millington, will be the bulk of
the 'O' this season...A kicker is needed if Matt Kellett, who I had high hopes
for
last season, can't get out of the funk of missing easy kicks & making hard
ones...Is this diselxic?!... (Moose
Mat Kellett was just released. Head from the US to kick & punt, Myk)
The defense will need to play to the level of Barin Simpson & Eric Carter,
who play every game like the Grey Cup was on the line!...The coaching staff will
get every mile out of the live bodies on this field or Ackles will replace
them...Simple as that...With Dickenson on board, this team should go to Western
Finals where they will fall to Saskatchewan, 30-27 or some such score...
Montreal Alouettes...Coach:
Don Matthews (career leader in CFL History w/
203 wins)...5 Grey Cup Championships...9 Grey Cup appearances...QBs - Anthony
Calvillo, Tavares Bolden, Ted White The Alouettes slowly ground their way to a
convincing Grey Cup win in Edmonton of all places, beating the hometown Eskimos,
25-16 last Nov. 24th, '02...They finished the season 15-5-0-0...
Myk & I were in the locker room w/ the guys as they were hooting, hollaring
& drinking champagne & I thought to myself them that "they better
enjoy this, 'cause it won't happen again soon." I've seen nothing in the
off season to convince me I'm wrong yet...The Als still don't have a backup QB,
though I'd have to say that we must admit that Anthony Calvillo, who was almost
stolen by Pittsburgh in the off season, is the best QBin the CFL now...And G.M.
Jim Popp, known for his
tight-fisted financial management lost 211 lbs. since last season...No, he
didn't try some new diet, he cut trouble- making RB Larry Phillips...
The Als also lost top-flight Offensive Coordinator Jim Barker, who returned to
the CFL after being away in the X-FL the yr. before, like his son...The Als also
lost another good set of RBs in Mike Pringle, who will continue to chase George
Reed's CFL all-time rushing mark, this time in Edmonton...Best Wishes out to the
other RB to leave, virginia's Thomas Haskins, who had brain surgery back in the
old Dominion state in April...He had also signed w/ Edmonton...Another player
who tried to escape financial purgatory known as a Montreal was 1st string OL
Neal Fort... He signed for one-yr w/ the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Ar.FL but
was cut
after one game in favor of ex-Toronto-Montreal-Hamilton OL Jerry Crafts, who I
thing is the best @ that position anywhere...
Montreal has lost so many good players to free agency that only a herculean
effort from Marc Megna, who played college ball in Virginia. To top it off Terry
Baker, K & outside LB Stefan Reid also packed it in...They will be sorely
missed...
The Don will help this team get back to the playoffs again but they won't come
close to repeating!
Edmonton Eskimos...Coach:
Tom Higgins...11 Grey Cup Championships...20 Grey Cup appearances...QBs - Ricky
Ray, Keith Smith, Jason Maas, Bart Hendricks...'02 record: 14-6-0-1 The Esks
miracle season spurred on by the rapid ascension of Ricky Ray, the frito kid,
ex-of Kurt Warner's arena league ended in a thud w/ the loss, 25-16 to the Als
in the 90th Grey Cup in Edmonton last season...The Esks are unbelievably
over-stocked @ the pivot w/ four guys, one on injured reserve... In poker this
would called "showing your hand" but in reality Hugh Campbell &
Tom Higgins are merely exhibiting circumspection of the sort that when the chips
get down they may have to deal Mass & Smith to desperate team (can you
Calgary or Toronto?) late in the yr. to acquire a player @ another position they
may get thin @ remember kids, this is Canadian football & injuries happen...
Two months ago a hole of sorts was shot into the Esks '03 sails when they lost
Thomas Haskins, maybe for the career w/ a brain operation...Smith could fill in
there...In '01 he averaged 7.5 yds. per rush as a Sask. pivot, though he only
went 5 games before blowing out his achilles heal (he was 3-2 as a starter w/
'Riders that yr. & may have saved Coach Danny Barrett's job)...Hendricks
played well for
Frankfurt last season ('02) while splitting the job w/ anther QB in the NFL
'AAA's...Maas has been a starter here last yr., too!...Whew!..
Pringle should be just awesome replacing the departed John Avery, the former
X-FL MVP, who signed w/ the Vikings in that other outdoor league below the 49th
parallel... The Offensive line is still the best in the league, though they
didn't play
like it in the Grey Cup last Nov... The WRs should be great this yr., too, lead
by Terry Vaughn, who I can't believe the NFL isn't interested in...Higgins
should be coach of the yr. if this talented team can win the Grey Cup, albeit a
yr. too late" Moose, President "Friends Of The CFL, USA",

June 7 "CFL
Update...In Memoriam" By: Moose CFL-Salzer
Longtime Pro coach, Frank 'Pop' Ivy passed away last week @ the age of 87 of
natural causes. Ivy played & coached in NCAA w/ Oklahoma University before
becoming the Head Coach of the dynasty Edmonton Eskimos of the 1950's. Ivy is in
the Univ. of Oklahoma Sooners Hall-of-Fame.
The Eskimos made four straight Grey Cups, winning three in-a-row over Sam
'The Rifle' Echeverry's Montreal Alouettes, 1953-55. He invented the twin
Fullback offence of Johnny Bright & Normie 'China Clipper' Kwong, who is
still regarded as the best FB in CFL history. Bright & Kwong were inducted
into the CFL HALL-OF-fAME in 1969. Kwong is on board-of-directors of Calgary
Flames.
After leaving the Eskimos for a higher paying job coaching the NFL's Chicago
Cardinals in 1958 (they moved to St. Louis in 1960), Ivy later coached in the
new American Football League with the New York Titans (now Jets) & lastly in
Pros for Houston Oilers, who lost (then) Pro Football's longest game, 1963, a
double overtime loss to the Dallas Texans (who are now the Kansas City Chiefs).
Other Ivy inventions are the "Lonesome" QB set - the shotgun w/ only
the QB
in the Offensive backfield, & the 3 RB Pro set. This was easier to
experiment w/ in the CFL since the CFL has the 12 man set as opposed to the
standard 11 man American set." Moose
