"Moose's
CFL Team Previews continued Grey cup 04 Champs
Toronto Argonauts and the Calgary Stampeders!" Myk
Toronto
Argonauts, 97th year. Coach: Mike ‘Pinball’ Clemons. QBs: Damon
Allen and Michael Bishop. Other Key players: WRs, Terrence Edwards, Tony Miles,
R. Jay Soward,
LS/LB-FB Randy Srochenski, DS, Adrion Smith.
The
real 2004 Toronto Argonauts never showed up. Damon Allen And
Co. watched a CBC film of a miracle season and the more talented B.C.
Lions were paid
off so the CFL could have Pinball Clemons crew just sit and watch
with the rest of the world, as the miracle season of the ALMOST Pro nounced dead
for good, several years ago, Argonauts, completed a miracle run
to upset a favored West Champ B.C. team in the Nation’s Capitol last
Nov. 21st.
Just kidding, sort of. Seemed like that anyway. Only Chris Schultz
and Dave
Randorf picked the Argos, so I have to take my hat off to them.
Maybe
they (and Bart Hendricks) know where the body is buried. Allen, Who’s
first playbook was written in hiroglyphics, and who missed 7 games
in the middle
of the season, with a slightly fractured right leg, are on last Legs
THIS TIME. The only forty-something QB that could get these guys in
playoffs this
year is Doug Flutie, who almost signed with rival Hamilton in April,
along with his SB broth, Darren. This is an old team, even with exciting
and this year
totally healthy RB John Avery, it’s headed for the scrap heap, quickly.
The best thing to happen to these geezers in the offseason was the
resigning of
great young QB Bishop, who went 4-2-1 last year, filling in for Allen
in the stretch run.
The Argos got REAL lucky when Montreal pivot ace
Anthony Calvillo went down with an injury in the EAST Final and all
they had to do
was beat the Alouettes with overweight Ted White at QB they
won’t be that lucky this year. Bishop was simply sensational in his
“Arena League
offseason”, but came back to the begging Argos because the
Grand Rapids Rampage have even less chance at winning the ’06 ArenaBowl than
the Argos do of repeating this year. It won’t be funny if Allen is
still stumbling around out there come Oct.
The Argos lost a ton of good backups
and no younger guys are here to pick up the slack – yet. Predicted
Finish: CFL 8th."

your kidding me! They have retained the same team from Grey Cup win!" Myk

Calgary
Stampeders, 54th
year. Coach: Tom Higgins. QBs: Henry Burris, Jason Gesser,
Half Canadian
and who broke most of Timmy Chang’s Qbing records at Saint Louis
High School in
Honolulu, Oahu, Hawai’I!, and other Key players:
LB John Grace, DLm
Demetrious Maxie, Andre Arlain, WR, Joey Boese, DB, Brian Clark, LB, Mike
Juhasz, WR,
Denis Montana, WR and George White, LB. 2004 season: A disaster! Actually,
it wasn’t that good! Poor Matt Dunigan was thrust into the G.M./Coach
Spot by since
departed Doug and Ron Rooke. It turned out to be a fiasco of epic Perportions
in Michael Feterik’s farewell season of Ownership in the CFL (don’t
look now but
Tom Wright has just let the Glieberman’s back in the stable door
in the
Nation’s Capitol – Yikes!). Son QB(?) Kevin Feterik, who was last seen
prepping for
his “comeback”, was let go two seasons ago. I spoke briefly to him
in Honolulu
last June (’04).
Dunigan
told me on the plane going back to Toronto from Regina, following the
’03 Grey Cup
that he had no designs on Coaching, but two months later, there were
the Rookes and Daddy Feterik, introduing him aboard as the new Obergruppenfueher
of the Stamps. It went downhill from there. In comes an excellent Coaching
staff that
includes Higgins, who just won three straight Western Conference crowns
with Edmonton
and ex-Lions/Stallions Offencive Coordinator Steve Buratto. The Stamps
spend bocqoo bucks to sign talented, but underachieving QB Henry Burris
From
Saskatchewan but let Marcus Crandell, who won them the Grey Cup in ’01,
go to the
Roughriders for the $100 waiver fee?! Say what. Calgary could seriously
end up
regretting that!
The defence is in a shambles, except for a very good (on paper anyway)
Lbing crew: White, Canadian Scott Coe and Brian Clark, will make plenty of
tackles this year. They’ll both need to and have to. The Special teams
aren’t–Special, that is and the running game could give them real headaches!
This will not be much
of an ’05 season for Buratto and Higgins unless Burris somehow starts to win
big games,
something he never did in two stints with the Roughriders. Darnell Kennedy was
resently released, but expect to see ex-Winnipeg Bomber Khari Jones back
soon, if things
start out slowly, The Stamps didn’t get that much help from the CIS
draft, yet, in
terms of players that fill the holes in the lineup. Stamps fans can be
thankful for
new good ownership but little else. The West is stacked with powerhouse
teams – Calgary probably won’t be one of them. Best of luck to the new gang
in
Cowtown – you’ll need it! Predicted Finish, seventh in CFL." Moose

"Moose's
CFL Team Previews continued B.C Lions,
Saskatchewan Roughriders!" Myk
B.C.
Lions, 52nd
year. Coach: Wally Buono, QBs: Casey Printers, Dave Dickenson, Jarious
Jackson. Other Key players: K/P Duncan O’Mahoney, RB Antonio Warren, SB-TE
Jason Clermont, WRs: Ryan Thelwell, Geroy Simon, OLm Moe
Elewonibi, Kelly Bates, Angus Reid (no, no the guy from AC/DC). The Lions
ended a frustrating season in
’04 losing a Grey Cup they should have won by at least the
TD they opened the Grey Cup leading Toronto by. A Dave Dickenson to Jason
Clermont score looked like it
would set the tone for a B.C. win. It didn’t. Coach Wally
Buono had to undergo double bypass surgery one week after the Grey Cup and
it may have been bothering him during the game. Many questioned (including
Myk Aussie) Wally using JUST Dace
Dickenson at pivot during the Championship game, until it
came out later that Printers, who damaged his right passing shoulder v.
Saskatchewan in the West
Final, one week earlier, was hurt worse than originally expected.
There
could be trouble brewing in Bridge City – not this year but next. Dave is
coming up on the option
year of his contract and Printers will only make about $52,000 CDN. this
year (plus incentives which will boost it up another 8-9 thou). Dickenson, when
healthy is worth every bit of the
$400,000 US he makes, however not when a favored team
doesn’t win the Grey Cup. Vancouver is home to the 93rd Grey Cup
this year and B.C. expects
to be there. But two or three things may keep Wally from getting back
this season; Saskatchewan has never been deeper to start a CFL season and
Edmonton just got Ricky Ray back.
Good news for them since starter Jason Maas had
recent passing shoulder surgery himself.
The
real concern for B.C. should be the Defence as the Lions let a lot of higher
priced people go in the last two
offseasons. Most went to the Green Riders or Winnipeg!
You guessed it – they both play in the West, too. Two years ago, without
Dickenson, the Lions limped into SkyDome, as a crossover team and lost
in the first round. Toronto seemed to have the Lions number the last two years,
but on more. Edmonton will win the West, Dickenson will probably get
Most Outstanding Player and either Winnipeg or Saskatchewan will probably
crossover this season. If any of B.C.’s key vets get hurt, the Lions will
sink like a stone in the West
standings. But with Toronto and Ottawa bottom- feeders
in the East this year, they Will make the playoffs. Grey Cup Party, Anyone!?"
Moose
"BC
Lions will make the Grey Cup but Eskimos and Riders are looking very good in the
very strong West!" Myk Aussie
Saskatchewan
Roughriders, 94th
year. Coach: Danny Barrett, G.M. Roy Shivers, Former
University of Hawai’i RB Coach in 1975, the year Aloha Stadium opened. Key
players: QBs, Nealon Greene, Marcus Crandell WRs: Dennis Gile (who can also
Play QB), Des Wayne Weathers,
Daved Benefield, DT Scott Schultz, DBs Jackie Mitchell,
Davin Bush, Darnell Edwards, WRs: Matt Dominguez, Karsten Bailey, Elijah
Thurmon, OLm: Jeremy O’Day, Tango MacCauley, Gene Makowsky, Offencive Lineman
of the year in CFL in ’04, LBs: Reggie Hunt, Trevis Smith, Dwan Epps….
I
could go on, but I think the reader can get the big picture. All above players
ARE name players the
Offencive Backfield of Chris Szarka @ FB and the fastest RB in the
league, Kenton Keith are pure dynamite. Any team that beats these guys more
than once should be shipped the
Grey Cup trophy at once. Saskatchewan always finds
ways to lose games that they should win, but they also had the best CIS draft
ever in team history too. They
will win the Grey Cup since they are overdue. Marcus to
the rescue." Moose

Previews contd! Alouette's and Tiger Cats!" Myk Aussie
Montreal
Alouettes, 51st year, Coach: Don Matthews. QBs: Anthony Calvillo
&
?!?.
Other Key Players: FB Mike Villimek, Olm Uzooma Okeke & Joe Johnson,
DLm
Ed Phillion, Marc Megna (Richmond Univ., here in Virginia – he used to
Repo cars here in Virginia Beach) & Myks’ mate, ’04 Defencive Player of
the
Year, Anwar Stewart. RB Eric LaPointe, Grey Cup leading rusher in ’99 in
Hamilton’s
win should have a good year.
Remember, FB Bruno
Heppell
has retired. In comes Villimek, another Canadian FB from the awful
(some
say not that ‘good’!) Ottawa Renegades, who are headed for another bad
season.
At
WR, no team in the CFL’s East boasts more good players: Darnell McDonald,
Dave
Stala, who can also play K/QB in a pinch, Silvan Girard, still the fastest
player
on
the team, Ezra Landry, Kwame Cavil and Ben Cahoon, one of the better Canadian
Receivers in the loop himself (though I’d take Pat Woodcock). At QB, the need
to
find a better backup than Ted (Whale) White or J.R. Revere is still on. Expect
Ottawa’s blimp K. Joseph, or has been Khari Jones to be here by Labour Day.
The Offencive Line should still click even after the best Lineman, former
Baltimore Stallion Champ, Neal Fort finally packed it in. Unless Matthews can
coax him back…The Defencive Line, with the best passrush in the League,
provided by Megna, Stewart and Phillion, will still go-a ‘huntin’ on
opposing QBs in the League with a vengence. Expect either Montreal or
Saskatchewan to lead the League in sacks, again.
Linebacking could be in transition as the Als never did quite make up for the
retirement
Stephan
Reid several years ago and Matthews and the Coaching braintrust, looking for
more
speed, has moved Tim Strickland, an ex-CFL/NFL DB to outside LB. He’ll start
with
Rayn Folk, Michael Botterill. The secondary is still the best in the East,
especially with last years Virginia Rookie phenom, Almondo Curry, leading the
way. Stephan Fortin, Reggie Durden, also from Virginia and converted RB, Mike
Jenkins, start.
Jenkins
will still play RB, but moves to secondary until some of the younger imports
and
CIS draftees are ready.
The Don knows how to pull all
the strings and push all the right buttons. But it won’t be quite enough to
get the
Als
back into the Grey Cup – this year, especially if Winnipeg or Saskatchewan
crossover
and Calvillo
gets hurt – again, which could happen without the blocking
of
Fort and Heppell in the lineup any more. Predicted Finish: 11-7-0, 1st
place CFL
East.
Hamilton
Tiger-cats, 97th
year. Coach: Greg Marshall, QBs: Danny McManus, Marcus
Brady
and newcomer Jon Buetjer. Other Key players: Olm Dan Comiskey, WR Craig
Yeast,
an ex-Arena Leaguer, DB Wayne Shaw, CB Dedric Mathis, another ex-Ar.FL’r,
SB
Archie Amerson, ex-RB, ex-XFL’r, rookie starting CB, Kelvin Millhouse, Univ.
of
Hawai’I
Warriors, RB Troy Davis, LB Matt Robichaud, LB Mat Petz, WR Chris Brazzell.
Danny McManus, 40, returns for at least one more year as starting QB after
last
year passing the 51,000 yard mark and surviving the annual Flutie Sweepstakes
this
past spring. With Doug safely back home in New England, the first NFL to screw
up
with him, before he came North back in ’90, McManus retains his pivot job
without
a
fight. Behind is newcomer Buetjer (how to pronounce it, sorry, I Don’t know!)
and
Classic
talented but under achieving, Brady.
They should be mentioned because when
you
start any 40+ QB, that’s NOT named Doug Flutie, there could be trouble. Safety Rob Hitchcock leads the most underrated Defense
in the East, and decided not to retire yet either. This team could cause
Montreal
trouble
in the East for several reasons. Marshall is an outstanding Canadian / football
Coach
who has sent many players to the Pros and even proved last year that he could
hang
with Matthews and the Als. After all, he turned around the Ti-Cats from 1-17-0,
The
worst mark in club history, in one year and got these guys back in the playoffs.
Myk
Aussie scoffed at me last year, saying no way would Hamilton make the playoffs
after
a 1-17 year and that Ottawa (OTTAWA?) would finish higher in the East. Even
after
Ottawa’s collapse after a 3-0-0 start, Hamilton remained clam and continued to
plug
away. Except for a tie, in the annual Labour Day classic, 30-30, that game was
one
of the best CFL games I ever saw. I still say, that both teams should have tried
for
a two-pointer to win, but I’m a Yank, as Myk says, and I’D ALWAYS GO FOR
2!
The defence took a bit of a hit by not paying more for excellent pass
rusher Joe
Montford,
and sent him to Edmonton for Lineman Comiskey. They will make the
Playoffs
again but fall short to the crossover team in the EAST." Moose

Eskimos Preview: 87th
Year, Coach: Danny Macocia, QBs; Ricky Ray, Jason Maas, Bart Hendricks, who beat
out Khari Jones for number #3? Call out An Investigations Committee! He must
know where the body is buried. The Eskimos got QB Ricky Ray back from the dumb
New Jersey Jets, who now have no back up pivot! But who cares about them? Ray
would have eventually beaten out their golden child, Chad Pennington, who is
good, anyway! But back to the Eskies; they will win the West simply because they
have really lost nobody well except for Terry Vaughn, a good WR/SB who was on
the decline anyway and Toronto doesn’t have any QBs with a decent enough arm
to get him the ball anyway. Vaughn, like TO., the luckiest team on planet earth
anyway, is in serious decline and won’t make the playoffs anyway.
With
Mass recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, Ray better stay healthy! The
defence got a boost in a steal of a deal from Hamilton by acquiring Rush-End Joe
Montford, who unlike Elfrid Payton, who now plays Pro Indoor Football, will have
frist crack at Grover
Covington’s
alltime sack mark for the CFL. This was a good move for another reason; last
year double-dipper Kelvin Kinney was tired from another year of Arena Football
and he and teammate Donny Brady both got hurt in motorcycle wrecks. Kinney is
still good but getting along in years for Pro Footballers and ex-Hawai’I
Warrior Robert Grant, a DB is now Edmonton’s best Defencive player.
With
Mike Pringle retired the running game took a hit. But with other good Offencive
Lineman, Bruce Beaton RE-Un-retiring for last run at the Cup, Edmonton was saved
from having to draft an extra Offensive Lineman in the CIS draft. The Esks draft
in May was solid, though. Expect Ray to complete his usual 67% for 30+ TDs and
Edmonton to cruise to another (yawn) Grey Cup appearance, where they will be
ambushed by upstart Saskatchewan, now the CFL’s deepest (and fastest)
team.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 74th
Year. Coach: Jim Daley, former Sasktachewan
Grey Cup Coach. QBs: Kevin Glenn,
Spurgeon Wynn, ex-Amsterdam Admiral
starter (‘AAA’) and Tee Martin, ex-Rhein
Fire (‘AAA’) starter. Other Key Players:
RB/KR Charles Roberts from here in
Virginia, OLm Dave Mudge (ex-MYKwebTV)
Db/wr Geoff Drover, K-P Troy Westwood,
LBs Lamar McGriggs & Ryland Wickman
and the best Special Teams player, maybe
ever in the CFL’s history (!) FB/ST Wade
Miller. Folkes, next year will be the
Blue Bomber’s 75th season and it’s third time to
host the Grey Cup. I talked to ex-Kicker extraordinaire,
Trevor Kennerd several weeks
ago on the phone and he is hyped to have
the Grey Cup in Manitoba. Kennerd should
know a thing or three about Grey Cups; he
played in four and his Bombers won three
in his years with the club; ’84, ’88,
’90. Kicking and Punting is in good hands, er, ah,
feet in this ERA as well with Troy
(Chief) Westwood. The Offence has never been
better @ QB with three young strong-armed
pivots in Glenn, Wynn and Martin and for once, they are in proper alignment, for
now. Wynn will eventually take
Glenn’s job – but not now and maybe
not this season!
Roberts remains the fastest back in the
CFL, but not the best – yet. That’s Josh Ranek
of the Ottawa Renegades. Roberts runs
behind a very good O-Line: Mudge, Matt Sheridan, Dan Gyetai, Shawn Gifford. But
they will miss Moe Elowonibi, who flew the
coop for last year’s Grey Cup
runner-up, B.C. The Defencive Line still has plenty
of fine Tackles but the Ends need help!
This team made no effort to sign an Elfrid
Payton, Daved Benefield or Joe Montford
in the off season. Surprising since Coach
Daley is known for that side of the ball.
He took a 10-10 Saskatchewan team to the
Grey Cup in ’97 (the game played in
Edmonton after originally being scheduled for
Baltimore!), with the best Defence in the
Loop! LBs McGriggs and Wickman when
healthy, which is only 65% of the time
the last few seasons are fast, strong and tough.
Drover, the frist player in CFL history
from Little P.E.I, is one of the most versatile
players in the League and made a smooth transition
from WR to DHB. He is joined
by again Eric Carter and Jayson Bray, the
ex-Calgary Stamp. There are rumours that
if injuries hit the secondary this season
more Canadian WRs, such as reserves Kamau
Peterson (Af2 / New Hampshire U.) or
Jamie Stoddard, who will open the season as
Offencive starters, will move to the
D-backfield. Getting Keith Stokes from (then) Grey
Cup Champ Montreal helps the return game
and makes Roberts not have to fill so many roles. Tom Canada, no pun intended is
the best at his position, among Canadian players
in the (his?) country…The big trade
they ripped off pathetic Calgary (in ’04, anyway)
on helped immensely; DLm Joe Fleming,
Safety WES Lysack and FB Radny Bowles
all carried themselves well after getting
out of Matt Dunigan’s nuthouse in Cowtown.
This is a very good team with a very good
Coach and should be a powerhouse this
season. But the best is yet to come as
they try to get TO NEXT YEAR’s Grey Cup
in Lake City! Playoffs in the ever
increasingly strong Western Conference but no
Grey Cup this year. A logjam of good West
teams (Saskatchewan, B.C. & Edmonton)
will keep Calgary out of the mix for at
least one more year, but stop Winnipeg just
short, too." Moose
