"Hi
Moose. I AM rejoicing in my own little Bomberville here in Vancouver. I like
Matt Dunigan very much, but what was he thinking!!!!! All the better for the
struggling Bombers. I bet Printers is thinking "Oh no, not that Fleming
character again so soon".
It should be a good match-up on Saturday. I will be wading into enemy territory
with my Bomber jersey on. It's the only time I root for the >visiting team.
GO BLUE! Hope to see you at a game soon. Warmest regards" Jackie

Notes - THE TRADE - Calgary ripped off - AGAIN! Folkes,
back in March, new Coach Matt Dunigan pulled off an eight
player deal (four players going each direction) with awful Ottawa
and the Calgary papers were hailing him as being able to
pull the wool over easy-going 'Honolulu Joe' Paopao and Eric
(The Red) Tillman. I said at that time Calgary got the better of
the deal. I was right - barely! But this time Calgary got mugged!
The
recent deal that got Calgary a fourth-round pick in the CFL-CIS draft
in '06, plus QB Khari (worn out) Jones and a good backup FB in Scott
Bowles and and not a lot else. "All" they had to give up was; the
best DLm in the CFL, right now, '01 Grey Cup hero Joe Fleming, quality
FB Scott Regimbald and S Wes Lysack. Once again, Jim Daley strikes!
I predict if Winnipeg gets the crossover and makes the playoffs, he
will be Coach of the year. Daley never really cared about QB Jones, who's
acquisition puts injured Tommy on the Stampeders I.R. K.Jones, a
former Ar.FL'r and Scotland Claymore, who picked up a Championship ring
in '96, along with Jim Ballard (retired) and Paul McCallum, among others,
is past his prime.
The
move is sad in a way as it now puts me and Myk's buddy from Carolina, Marcus
Crandell on the bench. Some, like Eskinator may say Crandell is
better off there, but I don't agree. Also still on board are Mike Souza and
on the practice squad, Canadian pivot Tommy Denison, at Cowtown. But
there is nothing but euphoria in Blue Bomberville as once seen as weird
Brandon Taman, can now fill his house up with U.F.O books and videos,
after unloading K. Jones hefty paychecks.
Back in Winnipeg, the second
coldest place on earth in winter, Regimbald and Fleming will be welcomed
with open arms. Also, it clears up the muddled QB scenario in
Blue Bomberville. Backing up new starter Kevin Glenn are: Stan Jackson and Tee
Martin (if that's worth anything, as much as Taman obsessed over getting him
into the Gold, Blue and White jerseys). Lysack's acquisition
allows Winnipeg to move both Marcus Howell and Geoff Drover back to their
natural positions as Offencive ends. And it creates depth.
Congratulations to Winnipeg for pulling off the deal of the year. And
to Calgary, better luck next year, Matt & Co.

Sept 25, 04 "Moose's
recent interview with former CFLer Cookie Gilchrist!" Myk Aussie
This
is great reading.
"Chester
Carleton 'Cookie' Gilchrist has called me three times and MykAussie.com twice.
The first call was when we posted an article about Maurice Clarett challenging
the NFL's "21-and-older-rule". I mentioned I felt that
knucklehead/jail-bird Jim Brown was giving the kid bad advice and that he needed
to stay in school and get his education, something that was denied Mr.
Gilchrist, who was illegally signed between 11th and 12th grades, right out of
High School. He remains the only player to have ever gone from High School
straight to any Pro Football League. He and I talked, and the three part
interview was posted on my former 'Total-CFL discussion Board. This issue is
dedicated to the one-and-only Cookie Gilchrist. Amazing as it sounds, people
from Roy Shivers to Larry Csonka have asked me when I've mentioned him,
"Cookie Gilchrist, he's still alive?" Yes, Mr. Gilchrist just turned
69 (he called me three days ago). He's alive, healthy, fiest and telling the
truth as strong as ever. The Interview, updated, appears below.
My Interview with Chester Carleton 'Cookie' Gilchrist By: Rich 'Moose' Salzer
Last night Cookie Gilchrist called me and we spent 1 hour and twenty- seven
minutes discussing this life, football career and fifty years of fighting the
Establishment to try to better the lives of all Pro athletes after they are done
playing. Mr. Gilchrist, most of Sports fans at least 30-35 have heard bits and
pieces of his amazing life, but boy did this Virginia- Canadian get an
education! Mr. Gilchrist first dropped the bombshell that not only was he the
first Pro Football Player right out of High School, but he only finished the
11th grade! He was illegally signed to a one yr contract by the legendary Paul
Brown in 1954 to play for the Cleveland Browns, the team that the Brown family
started.
Cookie was told he wasn't quite ready, so Brown sent him to Canada to play in
the (then) OR-FU. He played one season at Sarnia then one more with Waterloo-Kitchner.
He then signed with the Hamilton Tiger-cats and in his second year with the club
lead them to the 1957 Grey Cup title. I checked after our conversation was over
with Steven Thiele's fine book, "Heroes of the Game - A History of the Grey
Cup", and Cookie did not only score two TDs that famous game, but he also
kicked his own extra points. Cookie played sixty minutes per game in those years
and played all Defencive Line positions in addition to kicker and FB. Cookie reintegrated
to me, "You used to play too, but in those days, Rich, it was a war of
survival." After helping Hamilton to win that '57 Championship, Cookie
approached Jake Gaudaur, who would later be Commissioner of the CFL and
approached Cookie about inclusion into the Canadain Football Hall of Fame and
Museum, in, 1983 (more later on that), and asked for a $500 bonus/raise that he
had been promised. Gaudaur flatly turned him down.
Gilchrist, who by now had a Canadian wife, needed it for the rent in Hamilton.
Not only did Gaudaur turn him down, he traded Cookie to the Saskatchewan
Roughriders! In 1958, Cookie set a Saskatchewan rushing record with over 1,300+
yards. Cookie and several black teammates started the first Western Canada Jazz
station during that year, he told me by phone while I was in Regina recently.
After that season he was traded again to Toronto. Cookie told me he was never
discriminated against while in Regina. He did run into some problems in Toronto.
(Today Cookie's children and young grand- children are all alive in Canada while
he lives back in Philadelphia. His children and grandkids were all born in
Canada.) Cookie was also illegally sold to the Buffalo Bills Ralph Wilson after
the '62 season and spent the last six of his fourteen Pro seasons in the new
AFL.
In
1964, while with Buffalo, Cookie started an organization to help Pro athletes
adapt to life after Sports and ease their transitions into society. He opened
branches in the U.S and Canada. Jack Kemp, Cookie's teammate and future U.S.
politician, also started the AFL's players union that year. Kemp started in the
CFL too, in 1959 with Calgary, before going to Paris Hilton's Granddad's Los
Angeles Chargers in 1960. Cookie was instrumental in the development of the
AFL's players union, too. Mr. Gilchrist took 17 minutes that Sunday night, of
both our times to read aloud the entire contents of his Players/Former players
bylaws. It contained an impressive array of perks and signatorees. In fact, Jack
Kemp, then a New York Senator read it into the Congressional Record in 1974.
Though he has still only an 11th grade education, Mr. Gilchrist reads well. He
is totally self taught.
During his Pro career in both Canada and the U.S., Cookie started several
businesses including a car wash service and a fried Chicken establishment
entitled (get this), Uncle Tom's. He even met Col. Sanders during this time.
>But without the proper education and being traded so many times (Sarnia to
Waterloo-Kitchener to Hamilton to Saskatchewan to Toronto, SOLD from the CFL to
the AFL's Bills, traded to Denver, to Miami and back to Denver in '67. He
eventually ended up on the Bengals expansion team roster, spring of '68. And who
owned the (then) new Bengals? Why Paul Brown, the man who signed him out of High
School, in 1954! By then Cookie was 32 and his aching knee wouldn't let him give
100% of 100%, even 'just' playing FB, so he retired. Because he hadn't been
educated into making patents and copywriting his entrepernurial enterprises, he
lost most of what could have made him a good living, aftering leaving the sport
he worked so hard to pioneer or perfect. Mr. Gilchrist remains bitter today (he
says he's been "fighting a fifty year war"), more because of the way
the establishment has been suppressing his getting his story out to the masses,
more than his years in the Pros being about stereotyping, descrimination, et,
al.
In 1983, his 'old friend' from Hamilton, Jake Gaudaur, called to offer him a
spot in Hamilton's fine Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum. Cookie
reminded him of the time he needed that $500 to make his rent and Gaudaur turned
him down. No thanks, was Cookie's answer. About a year ago, on my former Total-CFL
discussion Board, I posted a grass-roots appeal to get Cookie into the CFL Hall,
which was spotted by a non-'poster' (member) named Gary Woodcock. Gary is the
uncle of current Ottawa WR, Pat Woodcock. Gary's uncle, played right before
Cookie came across the border by 10 years or so and won the same award Cookie
later did. Gary and I have lost touch with each other, as life takes you many
places, but Gary and I in spirit still believe Cookie NEEDs to be in Hamilton,
Ontario @ C.F.H.&M.
Cookie said in our conversation that night that he would except it from the fans
if they could just persuade the people at the top to allow him to speak his
mind. Fast forward to 1994. Jack Kemp called with basically the same spiel
from Canton Ohio. If Cookie would just tone down his outspokenness, he could
probably get into Canton, Ohio on the old timers ballot. No dice. Kemp two years
later would be the Republican Vice Presidential Candidate on the unsuccessful
Dole ticket. Cookie's fourteen years, 9,000+ rushing yards in two Pro Leagues
should be enough to get him in one or both of these North American Pro Football
Hall of Fames.
Cookie told me many things that I did not know. I believe Myk and I should do a
video about Cookie, if Oliver Stone misses this one! Or maybe Michael Moore. I
asked Cookie why he continues to fight the 'system on this, year after year.' He
told me, "Rich, my name in Scottish means the 'Guild of Christ'. I am just
trying to tell the truth! [Note: pls. check cookiegilchrist.com for more

Joe
Paopao and Eric Tillman saved their jobs for another week with the
Renegades upset of Calgary, who I think everybody has to admit now, sorry
Jerry Nuffy, is the absolute worst
team in the CFL, bar none! Saskatchewan got
right back in the playoff chase
with a very important win at Hamilton. Yea, OK,
Myk, et, al, I admit, Casey Printers must be for real but
I still am not convinced
B.C. has the goods to meet Montreal in the Grey Cup. Toronto
should have beaten Winnipeg, but made the mistake of getting onto a
shootout with the all-of-a-sudden red-hot Bombers. I swear, if the 96th CFL
season ended today, I 'd have to
vote for Winnipeg's Jim Daley Coach of the year.
Winnipeg is 4-2-0 since he took over for Lameduck Dave Ritchie. Wouldn't
that make Fanny Annie happy, eh,
Myk?" Moose

very interesting report by Moose from Riderville recently!" Myk Aussie
From
Moose "USA - Friends of the CFL Update; My trip to Regina for the Labour
Day game. The game itself,
especially for Saskatchewan fans was a washout, Winnipeg
winning 17-4. Henry Burris had the second worst game of
his career (the Monday Night deal with the Bears was even worse: 0
TDs and 4 INTs). But the six days in Regina was outstanding. I got to
meet and greet with Defencive Coach Ron Estay, who showed my
his six Grey Cup rings, SEC Championship ring and CFL Hall of Fame
ring. He played 12 seasons for the Green & Gold in Edmonton playing
in nine Grey Cup games and winning Earl Grey's trophy six times.
He played out his Pro career with the USFL's Washington Federals in
1983 and one game into 1984, he was injured and retired.
The injury list for the beleaguered
Feds that year was long with Craig James (who I
just talked to on the phone a few weeks ago) and another ex-CFL great Joey
Walter. Coach Ray Jauch used to Coach Edmonton and Winnipeg in the
CFL but jumped ship to Coach in the USFL, as did Warren Moon's Edmonton
Coach, Hugh Campbell. Campbell also Coached Moon in Houston
for one-and-a-half seasons in '84 & '85. Coach Estay was at
Bernel's house most of the week playing cards until the wee hours of
the morning. I got on Global T.V. once and was on two Regina Radio
Staions proselytizing 'USA - Freinds of the CFL' and spreading the
message of MykWebT.V.
To Saskfan4life, I sat in row 104, right under
TSN's press box and infact, I finally got to meet llooonnnnnggg time
CFL announcer John Wells. He came up through the stands with Glen
Suitor, who let me wear his '89 Saskatchewan Grey Cup ring in San
Diego, when Myk and I met he and Chris Schultz at the NFL Experience in San
Diego at the Super Bowl in Jan. '03. Suitor remebered that and asked me how many
US - CFL'r's will be up for the Grey Cup
and Parade in Ottawa this year. I said I hoped it would be 30-40.
Wells
and Suits were really impressed and both shoke my hand. What a
couple of great guys. I also did my 'mitzvah' (good deed) this week by
delivering that scouting tape to Tony Playter and Roy Shivers of the Roughriders
to help get a couple of my 'kanakas' from the Af2 Hawai'i Islanders
into, at least the Roughriders camp next year (of course the best
QB on planet earth that almost nobody outside of the fiftieth state has
ever heard of, Shawn Withy-Allen and former Eskimo FB/LB Kekei Misipeka).
Shivers is a helluva of an interesting guy. He knew every place
in Oahu, Hawai'i that I did. He was the running back Coach at Hawai'i
in '75. He knew Adam Rita, and Daryl Adralin there! Adralin later
became a LB. And has been in the CFL for many years as a Ast. Coach,
currently with Montreal. Small World, eh? Tony Playter is back with
the Roughriders as Personnel man, and Shivers kinda got on Tony' when
I told him that Atlanta had stupidly released Mad Dod Terrance Melton,
who they tried to convert to Safety (give me a break).
Tony thought he'd made the
active roster when if fact he was 53rd man (practice
squad). Also on NFL practice squads are: Ricky Ray and Matt
Dominguez, both with the Jets and Al Johnson the third, at Houston.
What a waste of talent! Johnson may have to go back to NFL
E. I'd love to see them back in the CFL soon! Also met Al Ford, former
player and former Sask. G.M. He and Shivers caused quite a
stir when the boys from the Regina Leader-Post got a shot of them
together on the sidelines at practice. Like last year with Myk in
Calgary, I went to three 'Rider practices. I liked what the glib Roy
Shivers told me one day: "I wished I could wave a magic wand over
Nealon Greene's leg and get him better and get him back in the lineup."
Amen, brother Roy! I also like what Shivers said about Burris: "He
had his head buried in his hands, in the locker room corner after the
(Labour Day) game and I [Shivers] said to him, 'don't just sit there
crying, you get payed to play and do your job as a QB and win'."
Burris didn't look anymore accurate at practice last week either! Rocky
Butler, Dennis Gile and Nealon did, though Nealon was limping still
pretty good.
I shook Nealon's hand and wished him a speedy recovery. He
sure remembered Myk from last year's visit. I asked him how his leg recovery
was and he replied, "Slow, slow, slow." He is great guy, Nealon.
I can't understand why nobody in
'Rider-ville likes him much; look at his career
stats: 100+ TDs and only 61 INTs. Then for $200,000/yr with Burris
you get nothing but INTs! Butler is the dark-horse, no pun intended in
this trio. According to Shivers, no way will all three be with the 'Riders
next year, especially if
Withy-Allen and Gile, two Arena League vets are there.
Gile looked very good at WR/DB in
drills since the 'Riders are a bit short to
have 12 on 12 'O'/'D' type drills. Butler threw hard and Gile two-and- one
handed 'em like nothing. I understand he is a good athlete and Offencive
Coordinator Marcel Bellefeuille is in Burris corner now. Barrett pretty
much ignored Burris and praised Gile and Butler only at practice.
Wow. At the 'Rider store, Liz Measner, the great lady who runs the shop gave
me a 40% Coaches discount and I bought all the last 30 Shreveport/ Norfolk
Pirate pins left. I plan on donating them to Touchdown Manitoba and
other Grey Cup weekend events liek the SnowBowl (here that Jim Wolf,
you about to be 'stuck' with Pirates pins from the '95 US Expansion won't you be
thrilled!). I got a great picture of Liz and I holding the autographed
John Candy photo of when he visited the 'Rider store back in '92.
Too good! I hope all the photos come out so I can get them scanned in
and e-mailed to Myk so he can post this and them on the Total Board so
at least those interested can see them, or a link to USA - Friends of the
CFL page(s). Mahalo and Aloha to all I met up there yonder in Regina. Another
successful CFL trip in the bag. My 11th consecutive Grey Cup, this one
in Ottawa, coming up, Nov. 16th-22nd, 2004. Warm the Wahinies and Kekei

From
Moose Week 13 Notes: Congratulations to four specific Blue Bombers! Coach Jim
Daley, the former Saskatchewan Grey Cup ('97) Coach is now 3-2 as the Man in
BlueBomberville. K Troy Westwood is now the number #4 all-time kickoff yardage
leader in CFL history, Virginia's own Charles Roberts is now at over 10,000+
yards in all purpose yardage for his career. And last but not least, how about
ex- Roughrider, Kevin Glenn, the little QB who could. Now 3-1 as the starter,
Jim if you're smart, don't bench him! Let Khari sit. Nothing against Khari, a
buddy of mine from the Arena League, but Glenn is better. At least now. Milk
this kid Glenn for everything he's worth! As for the Roughriders, I still think
the cross- over is attainable, but Winnipeg has got your number this season -
3-0. Ouch! And I don't want any whining out of Riderville about Hank Burris this
week. He played well enough for you guys to have won.
In Edmonton, who needs Ricky What's-his-name? Jason (More) Mass (Not 'no mass')
is plenty good enough. He's been there before too.
Week 14 Picks: Saskatchewan OVER Hamilton. The 'Riders have enough left in the
tank to win out talent wise but if they lose or even tie one more, forget about
it. Roy, I love ya, but you shouldn't have said they were goin' all the
way...
B.C. OVER Edmonton. I just don't think the Lions are ready to cool off yet.
Casey over Jason by a nose. Toronto OVER Winnipeg. Sorry 'Peg, Kevin has got his
old team's number but Mike Bishop's. I told everybody that Mike would be fine
after going to the Ar.FL and calming down a bit. The shorter field helped. It
was a shame for him to have a career game end in a tie. That really sucks. They
should have gone for two!
Calgary OVER Ottawa. After that 3-0-0 start everybody in Ottawa, especially
broke Randy Brule, thought, "Grey Cup at Home, here we come." Sorry,
wrong answer. Sorry also to Kerry Joseph. Ya gotta great arm kid, but you're not
a real QB. Joe and Tillman are as good as gone. And to think I picked these guys
to finish 6-12-0. They'd be lucky to get 4-13-1. Stick 'em (& maybe the
'Riders) with a fork, they're done..."
