July 23 04 "Total-CFLer "CFL Fan from California" is coming
to Canada!
"CFL
Fan from California" is heading to Stampeder Land today on a plane for the
Big Stamps vs Riders clash. I talked to the Stamps fan today.
"Myk
Aussie on the US TV market, they just added MSG, which is the Madison Square
Garden network out of New York. I've read that they also added some more
stations in Matt Dunigan Country, that's the Southern States. A couple of
friends who know I am a CFL fan, told me they watched their first game
and really enjoyed it. In this continues, I may rent a bus and caravan to the
2005 game in Vancouver with a bunch of new US CFL fans. I'm off to the
airport, say a prayer for my Stamps this weekend, I think they are going to get
beaten by the Riders."
CFL Fan from
California, Total-CFLer
Have
a great time at McMahon. I tried to direct CFL Fan from California to the big
tailgate party where "Sugarfoot In Mouth Disease" and the Total-CFL
fella's hang out. I wish I was there as well as I believe attending Stamps
games, the tailgate parties and then meeting up with the Stamps players, fans
and Cwoc's after at Moose McQuires is as good a day and night I could ever have
in Canada." Myk Aussie

Saskatchewan 42, B.C. 29
Ottawa 44, Edmonton 24
CFL
Notes - Shame on you, SWAC! Signing with those Blue Bombers! An ex-Stallion
should know better! After we had
to play Winnipeg in the first round of the playoffs
in both our years in the League,
'94 & '95. I do hope SWAC breaks the all time
CFL sack mark, still held
by a very good guy and former Hamilton Tiger-cat, Grover
Covington at 157. Hawai'i QB Shawn Withy-Allen has been added to the
Saskatchewan Roughriders
negotiation list. (Also see below:) See Shawn, persistence pays off! Thanks
to Bernel in Regina for the
heads up. Former CFL'r Jonathan Beasley has gone cold for the
Af2 Wichita Stealth. He had
been hot the last three weeks. And how about ex-Ottawa
Rough Riders / CHL owner Horn Chen
and partner Barry Switzer's Oklahoma Yard Dawgz?
At
9-2-0 some kind of expansion team! Just don't let Switzer go into any airport
with a gun in his bag, eh?
Great performances in the CFL this weekend by Danny McManus
and Kerry Joseph, though I'm still
not convinced Ottawa is for real. The real
litmus test is v. Montreal
this weekend. And don't count out the Roughriders yet either. Hank
Burris should be the answer to the
QB dilemma in Riderville until Nealon gets back.
Bernel thinks Nealon is probably
out for the year. We'll see. Never count Nealon
down and out. He's better
than people think and has been getting better each year.
Grey Cup List:
Toronto
has held the Grey Cup 45 times.
Vancouver 13 times. (And next year will be my third G.C. in B.C.)
Hamilton 10 times.
Montreal 7 times.
Ottawa 5 times.
Calgary 3 times.
Edmonton 3 times.
Winnipeg 2 times.
Regina 2 times.
Sarnia 1 time.
Kingston 1 time." Moose

Standings - Week Three
1)
Hamilton Tiger-Cats 2-0-0
2) Montreal Alouettes 2-0-0
3) Ottawa Renegades 2-0-0
4) Brit. Col. Lions 1-1-0
5) Calgary Stampeders 1-1-0
6) Toronto Argonauts 1-1-0
7) Saskatchewan Rdiers 0-2-0
8) Edmonton Eskimos 0-2-0
9) Winnipeg Blue Bombers 0-2-0
Myk's
buddy, Montreal DE Anwar Stewart, is my player of the week
after that great 44-yard interception return for a major which gave the
Als their win over Calgary. The rout was on after that. Did anybody notice
how paltry Kerry Joseph's stats are in the first two games? Nevertheless
the Renegades are a surprising
2-0-0. It's along 18 game season though. I
always say the Grey Cup Championship is after a marathon race. The Khari watch
is on in Blue Bomber town. Give the Bombers
another one or two losses and Kevin Glenn will be in for Jones permanently!

order of Finish:
1) Saskatchewan Rough
Riders 2) Montreal Alouettes 3) BC Lions 4) Argo's 5) Eskimo's 6) Tiger-Cats 7) Blue Bombers 8)
Stampeders 9) Renegades
2)
Montreal Alouettes -
(Olympic Stadium - playoffs; Grey Cups,
Molson Field, Univ.
of McGill - reg. season)
Have won the Grey Cup five times. Coach:
Don Matthews.
QBs: Anthony Calvillo, Ted
White, Tavares Bolden. I kinda hate to do
this to Pinball
Clemons but Les Als have
one more Grey Cup appearance in them for
the La Belle
Province before "The
Don" fades into the CFL Hall of Fame sunset.
Don is the Don
Shula or Bill Parcells or
Tim Marcum (Ar.FL winninest Coach) of the
CFL. He even
lead my beloved Baltimore
Stallions to the Grey Cup win when teams
were in the
godd 'ole U S of A
(...tears flowing here...). He's done it all. And
with the great
Larry Smith back in tow
following an unsuccessful political bid, the
former Commish
who master-minded the U S
expansion (for which I am eternally
grateful!), this
team has enough left on
paper to make to the big gig once more
before Anthony
Calvillo's right arm falls
off.
I don't think without Mike Pringle
and Pat Woodcock
they can win it again.
Saskatchewan is just too young, strong and
good. Smith
& Co. did do a good
job of bringing as many bodies back as possible
from the team
that has been in three of
the last four Grey Cups; DEs Marc Megna
and Mykaussie's
buddy Anwar Stewart, DLm
Ed Phillion and Robert Brown, WR Kwamie
Cavil, K/WR
Dave Stala and acquiring
DBs Davis Sanchez & Kelly Malveaux. But
letting former
Grey Cup top Canadian Pat
Woodcock left for the Bermuda Triangle of
the CFL,
the Ottawa RoughRenegades,
was not smart.
They should have let Ben
Cahoon,
who is good though, go
instead. Resigning ex-XFL L.A. Champ WR
Jermaine Copeland will
help. But not enough. K/P Matt Kellett, who was terrible
the year before
as B.C's new Lui Passaglia
rebounded slightly last year but the jury
is still out on him
as BOTH P & K. Kick
coverage needs to be tightened up soon too.
Prediction: 12-6-0,
second;
Grey Cup runner-up." Moose

1) Saskatchewan Rough

9)
Ottawa Renegades -
(Frank Clair Stadium) Team won 9 total Grey Cups
as Ottawa Senators
(1925-6) and Ottawa Rough Riders. Coach: {for now}
Joe Paopao (for the sake
of argument, let me bet the first to intro - Kani
Kauahi {pronounced Cow-ah-HEE},
CURRENT 'O' Coordinator/FBs/'O' LINE
He'll be Coaching this
team very shortly!} QBs (?) Kerry Joseph (see Bart
Hendricks and Romeo
Miller, or is it Romero?!) Darnell Kennedy, who should
be starting and me an
Myk's buddy form the Hula Bowl, Iowa's Brad Banks.
To say this team is bad
would actually be a sort of compliment. There is
nothing at any position
that even begins to compare with the best of the
rest of the League's
teams. Take Kerry Joseph - PLEASE.
Maybe it's still
not too late to bring back
my buddy Dan Crowley from the Arena League.
Darnell Kennedy has as
much potential as Rocky Butler or Kevin Glenn ever
had but he won't get
playing time because he's coached by a puppet who
would rather whack
starters off the roster to save the boss, who's lost his
shirt on many bad N.L.L
teams (save for my beloved Toronto Rock) money.
Once you get past the best
RB in the League, Josh Ranek and former Grey
Cup hero, Pat Woodcock and
a good young Offencive Lineman like Dave De
La Parrelle what you have
left wouldn't make a fair NFL Europe team that
could reach .500. Do you
believe in miracles? Do you believe in Kerry Joseph
(or Bart Hendricks of
Romero Miller)? Didn't think so. Winning five games
would be cause for a new
Canadian Holiday. Maybe Wright can sell these
guys to the NFL 'AAA's
next season or trade them even up for the Cologne
Centurians? Prediction: Is
Hamilton's 1-17 safe for another year? Stay tuned
- unless you're a fish!" Moose
"Moose
I simply can not agree with you saying the Tiger-Cats will finish above the
Renegades. I think the Renegades will finish 3rd in the East not enough to be
ahead of the 4th Western Team but are a chance for 2nd in the East so maybe in
the playoffs.

8)
Calgary Stampeders -
(McMahon Stadium) Team has won five Grey Cups.
Coach: Matt Dunigan. QBs:
Marcus Crandell, Romeo Miller (Moose was just traded last week), Pat Barnes.
Poor
Matt Dunigan. He'll wish
he were away from (Moose you can't say that) and back with Schultzie, Ransdorf
and Jock before it's all
over.
Pivot Marcus Crandell, who
Myk and I like very much, gets one more chance
to right this sinking ship
and recapture his '01 Grey Cup form. He might but
they won't. Miller (read:
Joseph, Hendricks here) is another of the plethora
of ex-NFL / NFL E failures
that have sojourned to find the holy QB grail
here
in the great white North.
He'll probably be a final cut. Hey, Matt: bring
back
Keith Smith! Even that or
Kelvin Anderson wouldn't help at this point.
Also
gone are Otis Floyd, Bobby Singh, Travis Moore, Duncan O'Mahony,
and Kelly Malveaux, to
name some of the many. The meaningless shuffle
of reserve bodies between
them and the Ottawa RoughRenegades won't
mean much when the Grey
Cup season gets near and they are on the bottom
of the West standings. And
we have ... (Moose ....) Poor Jim Barker can polish that XFL Championship ring
and breath a
sigh of relief that he got
off light! Prediction: Last in the WEST but six
wins
would be very respectable.

Moose's predicted
order of Finish so far:
1) Saskatchewan Rough
Riders 3) BC Lions 4) Argo's 5) Eskimo's 6) Tiger-Cats 7) Blue Bombers
Since
Moose wrote this report QB Marcus Brady has been traded to the Tiger-Cats.
Hamilton
Tiger-Cats - (Ivor
Wynn Stadium) Won the Grey Cup 15 times as Alerts,
Tigers, Wildcats and
Tiger-Cats. Coach: Greg Marshall. QBs: Danny
McManus, Dave
Corley (from right here in
Virginia), James McPherson. The League's
2nd oldest team
gets a badly needed
face-lift, tummy-tuck, lower lip liposuction,
hair weave and
new teeth, et, al. As much
as I even love the Ti-cats, it was tough
watching the
mess that transpired after
the opening game. Dan Crowley, my buddy
from the
Stallions threw the game
winner for the Renegades on the last drive
and it went
downhill for the the
Tabbies after that. Save for a surprising O.T.
win over a very
good Riders team, they
would have lost all 18 games. Teams have won
only one
game in the CFL season
before but nobody ever lost 17 in a regular
season before.
Starting fresh with a new owner Bob Young, Hamilton born and bred
who runs a
software Co. down my way,
in Carolina, A new (old) G.M. Ron
Lancaster, a new
Coach, Greg Marshall from
across town at McMaster Univ. (Russ
Jackson U.) and a
new outlook. Even the
website looks great! Gone are
penny-pinching/broke co-
owners Dave Mc Donald and
George Grant. In are SB Mike Morreale, DL
Adriano
Belli, WR D.J. Flick and
penalty-prone Safety-hitter (even out of
bounds) Donovan
Carter, who should be good
for 15-17 late hits. Marshall still
believes McManus is
THE MAN at QB and so do I.
Last season was just an abberation. But
gone is
clumsy backup Pete
Gonzalez, who like his brother Dan, both played
in the CFL
and NFL. My man Corley
from William & Mary, the oldest College in
North America,
started by the Brits in
16-something and the home of CFL
alumni-Pinball Clemons,
will be a player to watch.
Running back bros, Darren and Troy Davis
along with
Julien Radlein, the FB
will keep Defenses honest with their running.
Resigning DE
Tim Cheatwood will make up
for the loss of Joe Montford. Expect
some Ar.FL
and NFL E signing soon to
bolster the depth a bit. Young will not
settle for anything less
than quality and it would be a terrific comeback this season for the
Tiger-cats to make the
playoffs after such a disastrous year as
last season.
Prediction: 9-8-1, 6th place, playoffs.
7)
Winnipeg Blue Bombers - CanadInns Stadium Won 10 Grey Cups
Coach (for now) Dave
Ritchie. QBs: Kevin Glenn, Khari Jones, Brian
Stallworth. What else can
you call a team who's Coach (now JUST
COACH after being stripped
of his Football Ops. title) and 'O' Coordinator
Paul LaPolice trade
insults to the asme press corps while on opposite ends
of the SAME DRESSING room,
Where the FB (now departed Mike Sellers)
smashes his helmet on the
ground at the practice field because he only
got one carry for two
yards the day before in a loss and where K/P Troy
Westwood, who's mother's
side of the family is from Regina and he proceeds
to say BEFORE Saskatchewan
blows out Winnipeg playoff game, that the
people of that province
are inbreeds and CAN'T EVEN play banjos?!
Dysfunctional comes to my
mind in this case immediately! Ritchie is on as
thin ice as 'ole coconut
head, Joe Paopao is in the Nations Capitol.
If the Blue Bombers don't go far in the playoffs this year (they still have
not gotten over losing
that '01 Grey Cup to Calgary), then Ritchie's bags
better be packed! QB Khari
Jones will lose his job to fast charging Kevin
Glenn sometime this
season. He was benched several times for scapegoat
Pat Barnes, who won an NFL
E Bowl and as a reserve with Calgary on that
'01 Grey Cup Champ team,
dumped as the sacrificial lamb/burnt offering in
the CFL offseason to
appease Lyle Bauer, the teams' Exec. V.P./ Football
Ops. Bauer, a CHris Walby
type who was one of the CFLs best Centres
ever won't stand for any
more of Ritchie's excuses this time around.
Unfortunatley
for Ritchie it won't be enough to have gotten rid of Barnes,
LaPolice and Sellers. They
won't break .550 or make the playoffs. Jones
has been in a shell ever
since he was stupidly given the M.O.P award the
Friday before Calgary
kicked their asses in that Grey Cup (it should have
gone
to Kelvin Anderson) and
has never been the same QB since. Even with one
of the greatest WRs ever
in Milt Stegall and now a host of very good
Canadian WRs / SBs: Geoff
Drover, Jamie Stoddard, Kamau Peterson
despite the loss of Arland
Bruce III to San Francisco this offseason.
The
'O' line is still one of the three best in the League (behind Montreal
and Saskatchewan) with
Centre Moe Elewonibi, and OGs Dan Gyetai and
Dave Mudge. But the 'D'
line needs new rush ends and quicks to go with
Denny Fortney and DOug
Brown. LBs Lamar McGriggs and Ryland Wickman
will miss the best of the
unit, Brian Clark, gone to Matt Dunigan's
Calgary.
Tommy
Europe, one of the League's finest Ss is retired - too much damn
drama here the last two
years and this team has never replaced CB Juran
Bolden. Dave Donaldson and
Harold Nash flew the coop - or were pushed
from the nest, take your
pick. Still this team does have a glimmer of hope
of getting a cross-ver -
maybe. Nah, just teasing. Sorry, Randy Bowles, Brad
Yamoaka and Wade Miller -
your toils as the best FB trio - maybe ever in the
CFL
on one team, won't be enough! Prediction: .500 - no playoffs." Moose

Moose's predicted
order of Finish so far:
1) Saskatchewan Rough
Riders 3) BC Lions 4) Argo's 5) Eskimo's
Moose what is going up there in Eskimoland that you know that I don't? You're
predicting the current Grey cup Champs to finish 5th. You're kidding me! You
know I think Damon Allen is a Champ. He was still great in 03 and will either be
a starter in 04 or the best Backup QB where ever he plays. Get him back to BC
Lions I say incase Dave goes down injured!!!!" Myk Aussie
4)
Toronto Argonauts - (SkyDome) - Won the Grey Cup 14 times. Coach:
Mike 'Pinball' Clemons.
QBs: Marcus Brady, Damon Allen (rapidly
approaching
his 50th b-day!), Mike
Bishop. It all depends on how quickly Marcus
pushes Damon
either off the roster or
into the nearest old folkes home. Allen has
nothing left
above the waist but
memories and Brady came on strong and almost got
the
Argos into the Grey Cup
last fall. If Bishop shows anything after
his Ar.FL two QB system on
one of the worst teams in Arena League history this
spring,
maybe the Argos should
make Damon a QB Coach. But with his attitude
(I
remember trying to
interview him with Myk in the Lions locker room
two years
ago - AND THE LIONS HAD
JUST WON! Sheesh!) maybe they should cut him
lose
and pick up say, Hawai'i's
Shawn Withy-Allen or Tommy Dennison?
Anyway,
always musing...The Argos
in my opinion cut loose the wrong guy in
Mike Jenkins,
who got dinged up in
Houston with the NFL's version of the Ottawa
RoughRenegades and if the
Argos think Rashaan Salami will do anything other
then fumble,
they're wrong. Salami was
one of the worst NFL RBs in recent memory
- actually
he wasn't that good! The
Receiving corps took a hit recently as well
as G.M./Personnel Dir.
Adam Rita (also from Honolulu) cut the payroll by
sending Mookie
Mitchell to the Edmonton
Eskies (boy I'd love to see them meet in
the playoffs!).
Rita
has done a good job of resigning such talents as: Bashir
Levingston, WR/KR,
SB/WR Tony Miles, K/P Noel
Prefontaine (who also played on the '01
L.A. XFL
team), and of course the
great John Avery, who's injury in the
Western Finals
two years ago probably
cost Edmonton the Grey Cup when Ricky Ray was
a
rookie. New owners Howard
Sokolowski and Dave Cynamon say they are
in it
for the long haul and by
their moves it would appear they mean it. I
will miss
the SkyDome (some say
SkyTomb), it was the greatest Football /
Baseball
Domed Stadium ever, but
there is to be a new Stadium built in
Toronto.
Prediction:
11-7-0, 4th Place, playoffs.
5)
Edmonton Eskimos
- (Commonwealth Stadium - only grass field left
in the CFL)
Team has won 12 Grey Cups.
Coach: Tom Higgins. QBs: Jason Maas,
Tommy Dennison
(?) Bart Simpson, er, ah
Hendricks (the poor guys!) Gone from the
two-year-in-a-row
Grey Cup Finalists are:
Ricky Ray and so many others it seem like
the Eskies won't
contend but don't ever
count the City of Champions out (except for
the Trappers!)
Maas reinherits the job he
lost more due to injury two years ago as
opposed to
Ricky Ray clearly beating
him out. Ray was very good in Arenaball
and even bettor
in the CFL. But Mass, when
healthy is a tick away. He threw 21 TDs
in '01 and would
have been even better in
'02 before Keith Smith injury kept HIM out
of the lineup and
opened the way for the
gunslinger Ray fresh from duty in Arena2
League. (His first
Pro game was in Honolulu -
what a tough way to start a career.)
If Maas, the holder, who
had back problems last season opening the
way for NFL /
NFL E reject Hendricks
(maybe they can get Simpson!). Hendricks is
the white
version of Ottawa's
Joseph, so Edmonton could be in serious trouble
(unless Homer
unrestricts Bart Simpson -
or SOME CFL team gets Shawn Withy-Allen
into camp
and off the Islanders
roster) if Maas is out for any length of time.
Back is potentially
the greatest RB of all
time in the Pros, Mike Pringle who almost
single-handedly put my
beloved Stallions in the
'94 & '95 Grey Cups, who needs 1,567 yards
to pass George
Reed, Walt Payton and
Emmitt (Twilight) Smith for the all-time Pro
Football record.
Picking up Michael Jenkins
could be in order since only reliable
Mike Bradley (who broke
some of Tim Tindale's CIS
marks) is still on the roster. The Eskies
should bring back
Withy-Allen's former Univ.
of Hawai'i mate, Keiki Misipeka, who is
tearing it up in
Hawai'i in Arena2 this
spring, who they waived from the practice
squad last year
before game four - the
dreaded 'import' / dopey rule again.
Getting
WR Jason Tucker,
the Grey Cup M.V.P back is
key to giving Mass, who is good at
picking out 2,3,4th
receivers, as many options
as possible. Scott Robinson and Mookie
Mitchell over from
TO. will help too. On defense
getting Kelvin Kinney back, before the
Roughriders
do will help once the
Ar.FL season is over. Former Winnipeg DB
Harold Nash and
Donny Brady form the
nucleus of a good 'D'backfield. The kicking
game is in good
feet and hands as holder
Maas and Fleming should again be as good as
McCallum
of the Riders in the West.
Prediction: 10-7-1, 5th place; playoffs." Moose

Moose's predicted
order of Finish so far:
1) Saskatchewan Rough
Riders 3) BC Lions
Predicted
order of Finish:
1) Saskatchewan Rough
Riders
- (Taylor Field) Have won the Grey Cup
twice.
Franchise has been to the
Grey Cup 14 times. Coach: Danny Barrett.
QBs:
Nealon Greene, Rocky
Butler, Henry Burris. Some cynics may argue
that the
way to truly evaluate a
CFL team is by how many players the NFL
will steal
in any given off season.
If that is true, any fair-minded person
would have to
say Saskatchewan has
created depth a-plenty since the start of the
21st
century (2000), no CFL
team has lost more players on a yearly
average to
that other outdoor Pro
Football League below the 49th parallel'
than the
Roughriders. For four
consecutive years the 'Riders have been going
straight
up: '00 - 5-12-1-0, '01 -
6-12-0-0, '02 - 8-9-2-0*, '03 - 12-8-0*
(including
playoff wins and losses.
Pls. note the CFL & Ar.FL no longer use the
overtime loss category).
If this advancement continues, Saskatchewan
should at
least make the Grey Cup
this year, a year after hosting the game in
'03.
Two years ago the 'Riders
were just happy to make the playoffs. Last
year
they blew out
dysfunctional Winnipeg at home in the first round of
the
playoffs, 37-22, before
losing a great Western Final game to
eventual Champ
Edmonton, 30-23. QB Nealon
Greene received a strong vote of
confidence
lately when unhappy backup
Kevin Glenn was sent to the Blue Bombers
in a
three team trade. That
leaves ex-NFL / NFL E vet Henry Burris to
compete
with up-and-coming,
exciting slasher/bomber Ian 'Rocky' Butler for
the right
to stir the
pivot-controversy pot when Greene goes through his
annual dry
spells around mid-CFL 18
game season. But just when the sharks were
circling the wagon (what a
concept!), Greene's been getting more
consistent
every year in the League.
Having a fit Travis Moore in 2004 should
help
cushion the blow of losing
two of the League's most exciting players
in Kenton
Keith (RB/WR) & Matt
Dominguez (WR-TE), both to the New York Jets.
Even if Nealon isn't the
fulltime answer to take the Green Riders to
the Cup,
it won't matter with the
depth this team has built in the four years
of the
Roy Shiver-Danny Barrett
and Co. Era. There are no more great CFL
teams
however with parity
setting in, there are 4-5 very good ones - three
in the
West (sorry, Calgary!).
Start with the resigning of LaDouphous
McCalla, Nate
Davis, the acquisition of
Scott Flory from Montreal, the signing of
Wayne
Weathers and the attempts
to get Kelvin Kinney once the Arena season is over
later in June. You get the idea. Next is convince Five-time
Super Bowl
linebacker Bill Romanowski
to come North to finish his career, as he
is contemplating. This
team is loaded. They have the best combination K/P
in the
loop in Paul McCallum and
they had the best CFL player draft this
spring as well.
All the parts are in place
to make a serious run at the Grey Cup and
in this Era
of CFL 'ball, I think they
will just squeeze through. I know, I
know; they also
lost ex-Arena Football
star Terrance Melton to Atlanta and Bill
'Tango' McCauley
left to go block for 'The
Batchelor' with the New York Football
Giants. The 'Riders
lose players to that other
outdoor League all the time and still
have been getting
better every year in the
last four. I say it continues. But if the
'Riders do make the
Cup (which I almost
guarantee they will in '04), if Nealon can't get
them over the
hump, Rocky or Burris will
be at the helm in '05 and Nealon will be
playing his natural
position - RB - elsewhere next
season. Predicted finish:
13-5-0; Grey Cup
Champs." Moose
"Moose along with acquiring
Daved Benefield from the Blue Bombers this year the Riders may go all the way.
It's that weird thing going on as the city that hosts the Grey Cup then wins it
the following year. Maybe the extra cash in the pockets of the host city CFL
team from the week long partying Grey Cuper's does help get some extra players.
But CFL Commissioner Tom Wright is right onto that now isn't he?

very knowledgeable but no doubt controversial CFL 04 Previews from a far!
Starting with the BC Lions"
CFL
04
Preview By: Rich Salzer
The
96th CFL season is about to kick off on June 15th and all the teams
are going through the training camp motions to solidify their final
opening day rosters. Free agents a-plenty are still waiting for
that call to join one of the nine
teams in the hunt for Earl Grey's trophy.
The ninth Governor-General of Canada {1904-11} donated his
trophy to be emblematic of the (then) Rugby-Football Champion of
the Dominion of Canada in Dec. 1909, though the Toronto Varsity Blues,
who won that first 'Grey Cup didn't receive it until the kickoff
of the 1910 season.
This season there will be no need for the unique 'cross-over' rule which
permits either a Western or Eastern team to cross-over to the other
Conference if their record is superior to the third place finisher
in the other Conference.
Last year for example, with four teams finishing
11-7 in the powerful West, B.C.
crossed-over and played in cavernous Toronto's
SkyDome in the Eastern first round. Therefore
we could have seen B.C. v. Edmonton in the Grey Cup for the
first time ever. But Mike "Pinball" Clemons Argonauts (and Dave
Dickenson's injury) prevented
that. This year three teams from each Conference
will make it straight up. Saskatchewan, B.C. & Edmonton in
the West and Montreal, Toronto and Hamilton in the East. In that order.
Longtime CFL fans know that this will not be a boring CFL season,
nonetheless. What follows are my
'expert' picks for the (Complaints, Comments
and Contributions to: richard_salzer@hotmail.com)
"OK
Moose you do know your CFL very well but I'm into you straight away! Tiger-Cats
3rd in East. I bet the Renegades finish higher than the Tiger-Cats and a 4th
team will again cross over in to the East. West Rules! Lets start with my
favorite team the BC Lions and see what Moose has to say about the Leos in

2004
CFL season:
Predicted
order of Finish:
3)
British Columbia Lions - (B.C. Place) Team has won five Grey Cups.
Coach: Wally Buono. QBs:
Dave Dickenson, Casey Printers, Spurgeon Wynn, Giovanni Carmassi.
The
B.C Lions could give Saskatchewan a run for the Western crown (but
Edmonton won't and Calgary
is rebuilding). The Lions are stocked and have maybe
the best collection of WRs
& SBs of all-time in the CFL with Geroy Simon, Frank
Cutolo, Chris Brazzell and
Jason Clermont. With Dickenson still hobbling from off season
knee surgery, the Lions may carry all three backups into the season. Aside
from the playoff game
meltdown in TO., Wynn was 2-1 when Dickenson was out of the lineup
with a broken finger last
midseason. Carmassi won't make the final cuts. He's
already failed with the NFL
/ NFL E. Wally is taking a titanic gamble discarding
longtime standout CFL RB Kelvin
Anderson, who helped him Grey
Cups with Calgary in four years in the late nineties
and early 21st century
(sounds weird, doesn't it!).
Antonio Warren and Lyle
Green better stay healthy and
don't be surprised to see Anderson back
in the CFL and maybe here
in the later part of the season. Gone to Winnipeg
is the best coverage corner in the
loop, Eric Carter. Maybe Wally knows
something that he's not telling us
about Anderson and Carter. Picking
up the Special Teams will be start K/P Duncan O'Mahony. The Offensive
and Defensive lines could be the keys to how far the very talented
team goes and getting Bobby Singh (the ex-Hawai'i Warrior/Saint Louis practice
squad Super Bowl ring winner and L.A. ex-XFL Champ)
will help alot. The Defencive line
may need to pick up Elfrid Payton or
Demetrious Maxie if they don't
make it in the NFL. Or - gasp! - Shont'e
Peoples?! Only Wally knows. Prediction:12-6-0, 3rd place in CFL." Moose

Fri,
May 21 04 "CFL signings by Scotty in the USA!" Myk Aussie
"A
pair of one-time high-round NFL wide receivers, R. Jay Soward and Jacquez Green,
are hoping that some northern exposure might help to resurrect their flagging
careers.
Soward, the first-round choice of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2000, has signed a
contract with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. A second-round choice of Tampa
Bay in the '98 draft, Green is also headed north, signing with the CFL's
Montreal Alouettes. Contract details were not immediately available for either
player.
The 29th player chosen overall in 2000, Soward has not played the past three
seasons, and remains under suspension by the NFL for his repeat violations of
the league's substance abuse policy. The former Southern
California star appeared in 13 games as a rookie, with two starts, and caught 14
passes for 154 yards and one touchdown.
But he was twice suspended in 2001, the second time for an entire season, and
has yet to be reinstated. Soward, who earned a $2 million signing bonus as part
of his rookie deal with the Jags, apparently has yet to meet the NFL standards
for aftercare. He recently told a newspaper that he has applied to be readmitted
into the league. Various reports over the past three years have suggested that
Soward, 26, has spent time in at least a half-dozen different treatment
facilities.
Green, 28, has played with the Bucs (1998-2001), Redskins (2002) and Lions
(2002). He was not in the league in 2003. The former University of Florida
standout has appeared in 66 games and started in 37 of them. He has 162
receptions for 2,311 yards and seven touchdowns. Green can also be used as a
kickoff and punt returner." Scotty in the USA.

Fan Fest was a great day! Especially for Moose and all the USA, Lions CFL Fans
that couldn't attend!" Myk Aussie
It
was a great Sundee arvo yesterday as I ventured to Pammy's BC Place for the BC
Lions Fan Fest. I took the video camera and got some great Total-CFLwebTV action
including interviews 1 on 1 with star Jason Clermont, new Lion my Stampeder mate
kicker and punter Duncan O'Mahony. I asked coach Wally Buono about all the Qurterbacks this year as backup for star but sometimes injured Dave Dickenson.
The beautiful Cwoc Felion cheerleaders were there. I was amazed at the number of
Rookie cheerleaders this year that will be dancing for the Lions. The Cwoc's
looked as always magnificent. I was a great day.
Lots of great giveaways coming to Total-CFLwebWORLD real soon as I ran into Jeff
from Pacific Trading Cards. Thanks Jeff for the magnificent CFL 2003 Player
cards.
