"CFL update! My interview with

Gilchrist the former CFLer! Ricky Ray and Matt Dominguez
play for the NY
Jets!"

CFL
scores, week nine -
Toronto
14, Winnipeg 6, Edmonton
31, Saskatchewan 7
Hamilton 31, Ottawa 19, B.C.
25, Calgary 18
CFL
week nine notes: I am still
not 100% convinced that Casey Printers is Dave Dickenson in
his prime, though I am convinced he is now better than Spurgeon Wynn. If
B.C. beats red-hot Toronto this week (which I don't think they will) then
I'll say they are the 'best in the west' for now. I still say Saskatchewan will
turn to Rocky and he will save the season. Gotta believe in sumpin'!
Here's my picks for week 10 in the
CFL: Toronto by 5 OVER B.C.
Edmonton by 11 OVER hapless Ottawa,
Montreal by 2 OVER Winnipeg
Hamilton by 15 OVER even more HAPLESS Calgary
My
3 part interview with Cookie Gilchrist is now on Total-CFL Discussion Click here
Ricky
Ray plays for the NY Jets - Plenty
was said Messers McGuire, T-'smann & Summerall as the game went on. Summerall
mentioned that Ray lead Edmonton to the Grey Cup win last season, T-'smann
said how accurate Ray was and he liked his last's years TD-to-INT ratio
and McGuire liked Rick's savvy.
Matt
Dominguez - Dominguez
was on the receiving end of 2 Pennington and one Ray passes. The jury
is still out on whether he will DEFINITELY make the Jets final roster. I see
the practice squad looming and a
trip to the NFL 'AAA's in Europe next season.
I hope I'm wrong, but I'd
love to see him return to my beloved Saskatchewan RoughRiders,
who've hit a bit of a slump lately. Mike
Vandejagt - Vanderjagt, who
also kicked for Tampa Bay and Minnesota in the Ar.FL, was force
into Punter duty yesterday as Holder/Punter Hunter Smith had a tweaked hammy
and the Colts' wisely rested him."

Update: The demise of Coach Dave Ritchie" Moose
OK...2001.
- You're 14-2-0-0 going into the last two games of the '01 CFL season.
You decide to rest Khari
Jones for most of the last two games. You use Brian (Honolulu)
Ah Yat and third pivot,
Jose Davis. You get blown out in the final two games. You
end the regular season,
14-4-0-0 (they still had overtime loss points then - so did the
Ar.FL). OK, so you get a
first round bye in the Grey Cup playoffs and win over your Conference
Opponent and get in the Grey Cup v.10-10-0-1 Calgary. The the bottom drops
out. You lose
the biggest game in the country by 8 when you are favored by 10 and a half
points.
What
does you in is you get burned for two long TD passes in the second quarter
with Wally Buono's six-pack
of receivers. You only had six DBs on the roster for the
big game. Whoopps! You
Coach the under acheiveing Blue Bombers for two-and-a-half more seasons,
bench your favorite QB, the one
who got you to the Grey Cup two-and-a-half yrs.
earlier. You go 2-5-0 into
the '04 season and you get the ax. Your name is Coach Dave Ritichie.
You have 108 career CFL wins, good
enough for 6th place in the 96 year history
of the CFL. You feel....relieved.
The ax has been hanging over good 'ole Dave Ritchie's
head for a llooonnnngg while now...Now it hangs over Jim Daley, you're
replacement's head. Jim knows the
score. He took the 10-10-0 Saskatchewan Roughriders to the Grey Cup in '97.
They get beat by 16 by
Flutie and the Argos. It wasn't that close! He got fired two
seasons later. Welcome to
Coaching in the oldest Pro Football League on planet earth.
There's only nine spots out
there in the fraternity. Think hard before entering: THE CFL COACHING
ZONE!" Moose

Update!!" Moose Salzer
A
good article (albeit flawed) in the Virginian Pilot today about Alphonso Curry,
former Univ. of Virginia
CB, now playing for the Montreal Alouettes. He leads the CFL
in interceptions with 6 for 41 yards and one major. The errors in the still good
articles are: 1) Doug
Flutie is NOT 5 ft 9". He is five feet nine and three quarters or five-eights.
(2) Doug Flutie did not
"start in the CFL", he started in the USFL in '85, played
four NFL seasons [1986-89]
before signing with the B.C Lions of the CFL, (3) William &
Mary Alum Mike 'Pinball'
Clemons is not "5'5" as Ed Miller's article states, he's Five
ft 6.5, (4)
The
CFL field is not "about 12 yards wider than an NFL field, it's 14.5 yards
wider (see synopsis
below:), (5) Ed's comments that "the CFL rules allow unlimited motion
in the offencive
backfield", is also not on point. To state it correctly, the CFL allows
up to two offensive skill
position players to be in forward motion BEFORE being on the
line prior to the snap of
the ball. That is, anybody except of course Linemen and the
QB.
All
in all a good article by a fine writer who unfortunately is unfamiliar with
the structure of the
Canadian game that predates our own US football. Here is the synopsis I
promised to coincide with
the above:
CFL
- 150 YARD field; 110 yard surface includes. two 20 yard end zones. 68 yards
across with eighteen and
one foot wide goal posts. Three downs, twelve men per side, single
points on missed field
goals that are not returned from end zone. I.E Rugby sized field.
NFL
- 120 YARD field; 100 yard in play surface includes. two 10 yard end zones.
53.5 yards across
with eighteen foot wide goal posts. Four downs, 11 men per side, no single
points. I.E Soccer sized
field. Ar.FL - 66 YARD
field; 50 yard in play surface incld. two eight yard end zones.
28.334 yds across with
fifteen foot high goal posts nine feet wide. No single points. I.E
Hockey sized field. A
good article never the less. Always good to see any little thing in Pilot
Sports about local kid
doing well in the CFL (or Arena League like Norfolk States James Roe).
Week
nine Picks:
Montreal OVER Toronto
Edmonton OVER WINNIPEG
Hamilton OVER B.C
Saskatchewan OVER Calgary" Moose

Update! Henry Burris career!" Moose Salzer
Is
the best in the west now better than the beast from the east? How about before
answering that think about how Myk
& Jackie Jacobs B.C. Lions hammered the previously
undefeated Montreal Alouettes. The Green Riders have gotten a big boost
the last two weeks from Travelin'
Hank Burris. Burris started in the CFL as a
rookie getting a Grey Cup
ring (shades of my mate, Dan Crowley) in '98 behind Jeff Garcia
and Dave Dickenson with Calgary.
In 2000 he moved to Saskatchewan and won the
backup job to Jim Ballard, who
promptly broke his arm after only two plays and
Burris ended up starting
the last 17 games of the 5-12-1 campaign. In 2001 he was on
the Packers active roster
for 10 games before they moved him down to the practice
squad for the rest of the
season because of roster space needs for the playoffs.
In 2002 he signed as a free
agent with Bill and Sue Haddox Chicago Bears, playing 8 games
and starting one. He threw
his first 4 NFL TDs but also threw 5 INTs. The Bears optioned
Henry to Berlin of NFL ('AAA')
Europe where he split 5 games with another QB who's
long gone from Football. Separated
shoulder. He rehabbed but was released by the
Bears after two weeks of camp and
returned to Saskatchewan last summer where he
was number three behind Nealon Greene and Kevin Glenn, who is playing very
well for Winterpeg. Burris worked
hard last off season but was told in no uncertain
terms this year that Greene was
number one. Seven minutes into the season opener
on that hard turf at SkyDome,
Greene's season was over. Enter Rocky Butler (Burris
was out with a high ankle
sprain).
The Butler turned out to be TOO GREENE (whoops
er, ah, green). Enter Hank Burris.
It remains to be seen how long Burris stays
in the rotation. He'll be a
free agent this coming Feb. '05. And the Greene, (whopps,
er, ah) green Riders have
plenty of live bodies in the bullpen (Brian Stallworth,Dennis
Gile and fellow Af2 vet
kanaka Shawn Ke'ali'i Withy-Allen reppin' with the Hawai'ian
Islanders in the minors). As long as Henry wins more than he loses, Danny,
keep him in
the lineup. Same can be said about Kennedy in Ottawa or Glenn in Winterpeg.
Week
Eight Scores:
Ottawa 31, Calgary 30
Saskatchewan 33, Hamilton 24
B.C 32, Montreal 9
Edmonton 41, Winterpeg 24
