NFL / NFL ('AAA')
Europe Update By: Euro-Moose Salzer
Darren Bennett's mate
Vern Hippler may need a new job or a new team to play
for. On Sept. 17th, '03 NFL owners vote on the fate of 11-yr money loser NFL
Europe. Remember 9 'nays' out of 32 votes could kill it. They've been losing
$20-25 mil. a-yr. for over a decade across the pond. Folkes, do yourselves a
favor. Order the World Bowl XI program from the Scotland Claymores site store.
It will be a collector's item like the U S F L title game programs. One of my

games. Way to go Ken!" Moose

NFLE Champions - the Frankfurt Galaxy - for the third time! By: Euro-Moose
Salzer
I bet Darren Bennett made a long distance call this weekend. No, not back
home to Australia but to Glasgow, Scotland in the U.K., to his old Charger mate,
Werner Hippler (pronounced Vernon Hipple). Hippler got his third Championship in
seven seasons w/ the NFL ('AAA') Europe team as the Frankfurt Galaxy defeated
the Rhein Fire, 36-16 in the eleventh NFL E Championship.
The Galaxy, Rhein & F.C. Barcelona have all been to five World Bowls since
1991 when the secondary league was started as W.L.A.F.
The league's name was shortened to W.L.F. in '92 & when it returned in an
all-euro format in '95 it was called just the World league. In '98 they changed
the name again to NFL Europe. They are now called NFL Europe League. What won
the Galaxy this game was the great running of it's three backs particularly
MVP-starter Jonas Lewis. He totaled 124 yds. on the ground. The team rushed for
nearly
300 yds. v. a very good Rhein defence. The blocking of Hippler & C Joey
Jackson, who may start for the Baltimore Ravens was the key.
Frankfurt K Ralf Kleinmann, who returned this season after a twoyr. layoff to
help his family rebuild their restaurant they've owned since 1859, also got his
3rd Championship ring. It burned to the ground in an obvious arson two yrs. ago.
Did the authorities check over-zealous Rhein fans matches?
Frankfurt & Rhein is like Tampa Bay v. Orlando in Arena Football of Dallas
v. Washington in the NFL or Hamilton v. Toronto in the CFL - it's the biggest
rivalry in NFL E. Rhein had it's moments in the game. QB Nick Rolovich of the
Univ. of Hawai'i completed 9 consecutive passes in the 3rd qtr. to set a world
bowl record, however his fumble & interception proved costly. Rhein reached
the Galaxy red zone 8 times but could only come away with 1 TD & 3 FGs. The
Rhein's other QB, former Ariz. Card Chris Griesen also had a mediocore game for
the normally very potent Rhein
offence.
The two teams boasted some of the best national talent ever assembled in an
NFL EL Championship game. In addition to Hippler, Kleinmann, DL Danny Benetka,
who had two fumble recoveries for the Galaxy & has been through two full NFL
camps. In '01 he was the last player cut by the Colts & in '02 he was the
last player cut by the defending Champ N.E. Patriots. On the Rhien side they had
DL Bastian
(the beast) Lano, who really had the best yr. of any DL in the league, OL
Pat Venzke, who has been in the NFL w/ Jacksonville & Philadelphia, K Ingo
Andebrusse & Nigerian FB Oralande Oje O Ojo, or as his teammates call him: 4
'O' Joe.
Attendance is not what it should have been for the Euro Bowl but part of that
can be attributed to the fact that the Scotland Claymores weren't in the game.
One highlight is that NFL Europe's all-time leading national player, Scott 'Scoups'
Couper was the sideline reporter & after 7 seasons we can actually
understand him. Scoups has 101 catches (& Hippler 79) in his NFL E career.
In his annual NFL E 'state of the union address', NFL Commissioner Paul
Tagliabue said last week that attendance problems in Barcelona, Berlin &
Scotland remain a problem & there will be no expansion in the next few yrs.
He again defended his decision to continue the season despite Bush's damned war
w/ sandbagger Saddam & the season experienced some attendance problems on
account of it.
The Commissioner was interviewed by former NFL lineman Brian (not brain)
Baldinger, who along w/ his partner Kurt Mennefee were only above average again
this year, constantly mispronouncing players names, etc. Baldinger made a major
gaffe when pointing to a fan in the stand @ Sat.'s game wearing a Jeff Garcia
jersey saying, "see Kurt, they keep up w/ their former players after they
return to the United States." Tagliabue says NFL E is high ground - for
now!

Only one thing wrong with that statement, Brian. Jeff Garcia never played
NFL 'AAA' ball. He played in the higher Canadian Football League. Also NFL
Europe has the maddening ego to always take credit for their promotion of Kurt
Warner, who played 7 games w/ Amsterdam in '98. Kurt Warner started in the Arena
Football League & went to two Arena Bowls before even going to NFL E! Other
players that
played in arena league 1st included Chiefs LB Mike Maslowski & WR Oronde
Gadsden, OL Matt Lepsis & i could go on. Just because they played spring
ball in Europe doesn't mean that's where they got their primary
development.
The Arena league is a higher league. In NFL E you only play a skimpy 11 game
schedule. In the CFL you play a more manly 18 game schedule & in the arena
league players play offence, defense & special teams for 16 consecutive
weeks now. In arena2 they play 16 weeks
spread out over 18 weeks. Each team gets @ least one bye week.
NFL - 32 teams, 48 men per
CFL - 9 teams, 41 men per
Arena League - 16 teams, 24 men per
NFL E ('AAA' outdoors) 6 teams, 43 men per
Af2 ('AAA' indoors) - 27 teams, 21 per
NIFL ('AA' indoors) {the league where guys like Seth Burford &
Larry
Phillips belong} 23 teams, 20 per

team. Myk Aussie & I will be at the 2004 World Bowl." Moose

GALAXY COACH AND DEFENSIVE STAR
HONOURED;
CLAYMORES SIMONTON NAMED OFFENSIVE MVP
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND --- THE Frankfurt Galaxy have dominated the NFL Europe
League's individual honours for the 2003 season on the eve of their battle
with the Rhein Fire in World Bowl XI at Hampden Park on Saturday (June 14).
Head coach DOUG GRABER was recognized for leading the Galaxy to a
league-best 6-4 record and a record fifth appearance in the NFLEL
championship game when he was named as the league's Coach of the Year.
Galaxy safety RASHIDI BARNES, in his second year with the team, was named as
Defensive Most Valuable Player by the league's head coaches after finishing
the season as joint league leader with four interceptions and posting 45
tackles.
Scottish Claymores running back KEN SIMONTON won the voting for Offensive
MVP after leading the league with 871 rushing yards and finishing fourth
with 39 receptions.
Meanwhile, the announcement of the 2003 All-NFL Europe League team saw the
Claymores leading the way with seven players selected, while the Galaxy had
six players named to the team and World Bowl opponents Rhein three. The
other players came from the F.C. Barcelona Dragons (five), Amsterdam
Admirals (four) and Berlin Thunder (two).
Graber, a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator, is in his third
season at the Galaxy and proved his defensive expertise by producing the
league's top ranked defense for the third straight year.
NFL Vice-President of Football Operations JOHN BEAKE said: "Coaching in the
NFL Europe League is a great challenge. From the beginning of training camp,
staffs have only a few weeks to turn a completely new set of players into a
competitive unit. Having just missed out on World Bowl last year, coach
Graber once again produced a team that made a fast start and played tough in
the crucial games to earn a place in the championship game."
Barnes, originally drafted by the Cleveland Browns after an outstanding
college career at Colorado, led the Galaxy with 58 tackles in 2002 and was
chosen by coach Graber as one of his protected veterans for the 2003 season.
Coach Graber said: "Rashidi is a great leader of our defense. He plays hard
in every game and sets a fine example to the rest of his teammates."
Simonton, allocated by the Buffalo Bills, began the season by scoring four
touchdowns in one game and ended as the league leader with 10 touchdowns.
His combined total of 1,253 yards from scrimmage was almost 500 yards ahead
of his nearest challenger and left him only 15 yards short of the NFLEL
record held by ex-Dragon Lawrence Phillips.
Simonton is the fifth straight running back to be named as Offensive MVP and
Claymores head coach GENE DAHLQUIST said: "He is a tremendous all-round
player. We tried to figure out more and more ways to get him the ball."
Claymores teammate CRAIG NALL, league leader with a 95.9 passer rating, was
named as the quarterback of the All-NFLEL team, voted for by a combination
of NFLEL coaching staffs, media and fans voting online at NFLEurope.com. He
was one of four Claymores players named to the offensive team, with kicker
ROB HART also winning the vote after leading the league in scoring with 64
points.
Apart from Hart, Amsterdam tight end RYAN COLLINS was the only other player
to be named to the team for a second time. He was the only member of the
2002 team to be chosen. Admirals teammate CARLOS ROSADO, from Mexico, was
selected as the national offensive player after catching 25 passes, while
the Fire's German defensive tackle, BASTIAN LANO, was named as the national
player for the defense after leading his team with 6.5 sacks.
Center LUKE BUTKUS, who made the team despite a midseason injury, and wide
receiver KENDALL NEWSON were the other Fire players to win selection.
Amsterdam Admirals defensive end JONATHAN BROWN finally won a place on the
team, having not been selected when he played for the Thunder in 2000
despite being named as Defensive MVP. Berlin running back DAVID ALLEN was
named as the special teams player after a season in which he set a new
single-season record with 1,921 all-purpose yards, including a record 915 on
kick returns.

Sat. June 14th, 2003 Glasgow, Scotland, U.K.
Frankfurt Galaxy (6-4-0) v. Rhein Fire (7-3-0)
Coaching: Frankfurt - Doug Graber, 1st Championship ever v. Rhein's Pete
Kuharchek, 2nd NFL E Bowl (0-1). Kuharchek, the league's most laid-back &
even tempered coach v. Nervous Doug Graber, the meddler. This one could be a
blowout. The best two coaches in the league, F.C. Barcelona's Cowboy Jack
Bicknell (63 wins, includ. playoffs, Championships since '91) & Berlin's
Pistol (Re-) Pete Vaas
aren't here, so we have to settle for the above two. Graber doesn't trust his
National players & won't give them much playing time, though they know the
European pitches like the backs of their schnitzel(s). Graber won't let his
assistants do their jobs & Kuharchek won't interfere with his. A contrast in
style(s), to be sure.
Players to watch: the Nationals. Frankfurt. The Galaxy have the best national
player of all-time in the 11-yr. history of NFL ('AAA') Europe in ex-Charger,
ex-Las Vegas Outlaw KS/TE/H-B/FB Verner Hippler but since Graber won't let the
QBs, James Brown (3-yr Ar.FL man) & Jacksonville's Quinn Gray throw him the
ball, it won't matter how many crunching Larry Csonka style block he throws!
Ditto for France's
Marc Soumah, another quality catch guy who hardly saw the ball.
This team could have been 9-1 if Graber would just coach the defense &
special teams & let Dwayne Painter, offensive assistant, who coached Hipple
in San Diego in the Super Bowl ('95) & was off. coord. on '98 Denver Super
Bowl team, run the 'O'. Frankfurt's NFL rejects can't carry the load
- none have Championship game experience, except Brown, who as a backup QB lost
an Arena Bowl.
Hawai'i connection: Univ. of Hawai'i's Nick Rolovich, one of 4 Warrior/Broncos
will split the QB duties w/ capable ex-Cardinal Jake-Plummer-caddie, Chris
Griesen, who's played well despite not being allocated by an NFL team. Rhein's
national players, particularly DL Bastian Lano, LB Anthony Dogmhi & rookie K
Ingo Andebrusse should have good games. The best of the Fire to watch is WR/KR
Kendall
Newson, allocated by the Miami Dolphins. If he breaks either a K return or long
pass catch, it could get ugly real quick!
Prediction: Rhein Fire (8-3-0) 31, Frankfurt Galaxy (6-5-0) 18

Simonton grabs third Player of the Week prize;
Newson and Benetka honored for second time
SCOTTISH Claymores star running back KEN SIMONTON has been named NFL
Europe's Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Also honoured in the final week of the regular season were Berlin Thunder
linebacker JAMAL WHITE, Rhein Fire wide receiver/kick returner KENDALL
NEWSON and Frankfurt Galaxy defensive end DANIEL BENETKA.
Simonton - allocated to NFL Europe by the Buffalo Bills - led the league in
yards from scrimmage (1,074), rushing yards (720) and touchdowns (10) in
2003. He scooped his third NFLEL Player of the Week prize after rushing for
151 yards and catching 5 passes for 28 yards during Scotland's victory over
the Amsterdam Admirals on Sunday.
The speedy running back was also named Offensive Player of the Week
following Scotland's season opener against Berlin and after a Week 5
performance versus the F.C. Barcelona Dragons that saw him come within three
yards of being the first player in league history to have 100 yards rushing
and receiving in the same game (108 rushing, 97 receiving).
White, of the Oakland Raiders, helped the defending champion Berlin Thunder
end a frustrating 3-7 season on a winning note against the World Bowl-bound
Frankfurt Galaxy, earning Defensive Player of the Week honours in the
process.
The linebacker recorded 4 tackles, knocked down a pass, forced a fumble and
returned a fourth quarter interception 46 yards to the end zone to seal a
27-14 victory for the Thunder.
White ended the 2003 campaign as Berlin's leading tackler with 55 stops. He
also added a sack, 2 interceptions, a forced fumble and 4 special teams
tackles.
Miami Dolphins allocate Newson grabbed his second Special Teams Player of
the Week prize during the Rhein Fire's 33-7 demolition of the F.C. Barcelona
Dragons on Saturday. His other award came in Week 6 against Amsterdam.
Newson helped the Fire reach World Bowl XI in Scotland by scoring on a
dazzling 67-yard punt return against the Dragons. The star receiver ended
the day having returned 6 punts for 121 yards and 1 kickoff for 39 yards.
Like Newson, Galaxy German defensive lineman Benetka also picked up his
second Player of the Week award in the final round of games in the 2003
regular season.
Benetka - who has spent the past two summers in training camp with the NFL's
New England Patriots (2002) and Indianapolis Colts (2001) - was named
National Player of the Week after he notched 4 tackles and 2 sacks during
Frankfurt's loss in Berlin.

Next Sat. on Fox Sports World is World Bowl XI (even though I hate that name
- I call it NFL ('AAA') Euro Bowl well, because that's what it is. It will be
played in
Glasgow, Scotland, U.K. between the Frankfurt Galaxy, who will have "home

Germany (not Dusseldorf, Scott). The "Bring back the Rhein to Dusseldorf"
signs were all over the domed Arena Alfshalke yesterday as the Rhein hammered
poor Jack "Cowboy" Bicknell's F.C. Barcelona Dragons, 33-7 to be the
other team to qualify.
Nick Rolovich, Bronco & ex-Hawai'i Warrior will play QB in his 1st Pro
Football Championship game, of sorts on Sat. Jun. 14th, 2003. I'm picking Rhein
all the way. Why? (1) they have a better record, (2) Frankfurt coach Doug Graber
won't stop meddling w/ his great Offensive Coordinator Dwayne Painter's offence
& (3) he doesn't trust his national players.
How about the great Werner Hipple w/ only 3 catches this yr.? Is the man nuts or
he just doesn't want to get back into the NFL as either a defensive coordinator
or ast. coach?! You will only go as far as your key national players will take
you in the NFL E Bowl. Just like the Grey Cup in Canada. If your Canadian
players aren't as good as the other teams - you're screwed. Just ask Edmonton

Darren Bennett's mate Verner Hippler is going back to the NFL Euro Bowl for
the 5th time in 7 seasons(Hippler also played two seasons w/ San Diego & 1
more w/ Las Vegas in the X-FL), as the Frankfurt Galaxy crushed Univ. of
Hawai'i's Nick Rolovich's Rhein Fire team, 45-7. It was the Galaxy's 1st win
over Rhein in the last 7 tries.
Also Scotland kept it's slim-to-none hopes alive w/ a 45-7 whipping of hometown
F.C. Barcelona, 45-7. In the 3rd NFL E game this weekend, Amsterdam beat Berlin,
51-43 in the highest scoring game in NFL Europe league history.
What do these teams want to do? Try out for the Arena League next year?
Amsterdam is out of the Bowl running for the 7th consecutive season, but that
hasn't
stopped the fans from turning out to the tune of 22,000+ per game in Amsterdam
ArenA. Coach Bart Andrus may be on thin Ice, though! You can pretty much stick
5-4 Barcelona w/ a fork, too...They-for all intents & purposes are done!
Three straight blowout losses, three 2nd string QBs who've all taken turns embarrassing
themselves, etc., you get the point. The only way for them to make the NFL E
Bowl XI, June 14th in Glasgow, Scotland, U.K. is for Rhein to tie week ten,
Bareclona to win & either Amsterdam or Berlin to win. Not too likely.
Berlin was just not the same team w/out QB Henry Burris & Amsterdam has no
pass-rush! Only George Heckenbach, WR/KS of the National players has played well
for Berlin. And Masa Kawaguchi for Amsterdam. One day a smart CFL or NFL coach
will hire one or both of these two studs. They are that good. If Berlin doesn't
watch out they'll break the franchise mark of 2-7-1 by the club as the London
Monarchs of 1992." Moose

Receivers and defensive ends scoop Player of the Week prizes with
outstanding efforts in Week 9
A PAIR of wide receivers and two defensive ends have scooped Player
of the Week prizes following their outstanding displays in NFL Europe League
Week 9 action.
ROBERT BAKER, of the Frankfurt Galaxy, and Amsterdam's MATTHEW
HATCHETTE are the wide receivers to be honoured, while Scottish Claymores
defensive ends RADELL LOCKHART and ROBERT FLICKINGER were also named among
the elite performers this past weekend.
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Baker was named Offensive Player of the
Week after he caught 4 passes for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns in leading the
Galaxy to a 38-7 victory over Rhein Fire and a berth in World Bowl XI.
Baker, who has caught 31 passes for 585 yards this season, scored on
receptions of 14 yards from James Brown and 82 yards from Quinn Gray. He has
scored 6 receiving touchdowns and a punt return touchdown in the last four
games. This is Baker's second Player of the Week award this season after he
was named Special Teams Player of Week 7.
Frankfurt Galaxy head coach DOUG GRABER said: "Robert is a big-time
player and he could be a starter in the NFL one day. He is very serious
about being successful in NFL Europe."
Free agent Lockhart was voted Defensive Player of the Week after he
helped the Claymores inflict a 45-7 hammering on the F.C. Barcelona Dragons
in Spain. The second-year defensive lineman recorded 5 tackles and 3 sacks
as the Claymores brought down Dragons quarterbacks eight times on the day.
Hatchette was named Special Teams Player of the Week for his heads
up play against the Berlin Thunder in Week 9. After a Berlin player touched
a punt that had landed in the Admirals' end zone, Hatchette picked up the
ball and raced 101 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown.
It was the longest punt return in league history and came on a day
when Hatchette also scored 2 receiving touchdowns as Amsterdam won the
highest-scoring game in NFLEL history 51-43. Through nine games this season,
Hatchette has established himself as the league's leading receiver, catching
a club record 59 passes for 753 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also set a new
league record for consecutive 100-yard receiving games with four from Weeks
5 to 8.
Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS said: "Matthew made a very smart
play and he continues to be a very productive player for us. When they
touched the ball in the end zone like that on a punt it basically became a
free return for us without any risk at all because at the very least we
would have had a touchback on our own 20-yard line."
British defensive end Flickinger was named National Player of the

against the Dragons.

STANDINGS." Moose
