Washington
Redskins NFL Titles - 5 (1937, 1942, 1982, 1987, 1991)
Coach: Joe Gibbs (2nd stint as coach for the Skins) - 124-60, reg.
season; 16-5 playoffs. Coached in 4 Super Bowls, won 3.
2003
Record: 5-11
2003
season: Last year under Steve Spurrier, the Redskins won the first 3 out
of 4 games. However, due to a poor offensive line, abysmal running game,
awful defensive line, and a total lack of discipline, the Skins finished
the year losing 10 out of 12 games after starting 3-1. At the end of the
season, the Skins appear listless, especially home games against
division rivals Dallas and Philadelphia (lost by a combined 58-7). Spurrier
resigned with 3 years left to go in his contract.
Patrick
Ramsey started the year as the starting quarterback. Due to a
combination of Spurrier's pass and blocking schemes, Ramsey holding the
ball too long, and a porous offensive line, Ramsey was sacked 30 times
and hit about 100 other times. It reached a climax in week 12 where
Miami separated his shoulder in the 1st quarter. He was lost for the
year due to that injury and his lingering foot ailment. Tim Hasselback
filled in okay after being picked up as a street free agent. He had a rating as high 128 in one game, but posted a 0.0 rating against the
Cowboys where he completed 6 of 26 for the Skins, and 4 for 26 for the
Cowboys. He was a decent backup other than that game.
2004:
In comes Joe Gibbs as the surprise pickup for the Redskins. The 3 time
Super Bowl winning coach, and 2 time NASCAR champion as owner of Joe
Gibbs Racing, Gibbs last coached during the 1992 season. He arrives at
the most opportune time for the Skins have gone through constant change
since owner Dan Snyder bought the Skins 5 years ago. Gibbs brings
stability and respect for the organization, and he is perhaps the
only person Dan Snyder would listen in terms of personnel decisions. Skins fans rejoiced in the fact that Gibbs made his return to coaching
with the Skins. For the first time in years, the Skins and Skins' fans
have a positive outlook towards the coming season.
Additions:
Clinton Portis, Phillip Daniels, Cory Raymer, Michael Barrow, Sean
Taylor (R), Cornellius Griffin, Tom Tupa, Marcus Washington, Shawn
Springs, Mark Brunell
Subtractions:
Bruce Smith (retired), Bryan Johnson (Bears), Jesse Armstead (Panthers),
Jeremiah Trotter (Eagles), Champ Bailey (Broncos)
Strengths:
Kicking game - This has
been a black hole for the Skins since 1991. Over 10 kickers have come
and gone since Chip Lohmiller's Pro Bowl season of 1991. In 2003, one of
the few bright spots was John Hall, the free-agent signee from the New
York Jets. He went 25-33 in FG's and 26/27 XP for 101 points. He kicked
a number of clutch field goals during the season, and was solid in
kickoffs.
Wide
Receiver - Laveranues
Coles - 82 catches for 1204 yards and 6 TDs. - After a torrid
start, he cooled during the year due to a foot injury, but he
established himself as one of the better receivers in the NFC. He and
Rod Gardner, who was a disappointment in 2003, should form one of the
better receiving tandems in the league.
Running
Back - Redskins traded Champ Bailey and a 2nd round pick to Denver for
Clinton Portis. It is a huge upgrade from Trung Candidate, who only
gained 600 yards for the Skins in 2003, but good enough to lead the team
in rushing. The Skins had only one rusher to gain 100 yards in one game
(a game they lost). Portis should change that. Only Eric Dickerson and
Earl Campbell have gained more yards in the 1st two seasons than Portis.
His slashing style will fit the run blocking schemes for the Skins.
Coach
- Joe Gibbs will bring stability, discipline, and life to a franchise
that was becoming a laughingstock in the NFL along with the Cardinals
and Chargers. He
brings along an experienced coaching staff with Gregg Williams as
defensive coordinator, and Joe Bugel as offensive line coach.
Weakness:
Defense - Most notably the
defensive line. D-coordinator Gregg Williams would like to be very
aggressive, but will have to blitz more than he wanted to with a lack of
a pass rush. Phillip Daniels was a bust for the Bears after he left the
Seahawks, Griffin was considered a disappointment with the Giants, Shawn
Springs has come off of 3 injury plagued seasons, and Brandon Noble is
coming back from a knee injury suffered in preseason last year after he
signed to the Skins from the Cowboys. They may be okay against the run,
but the Skins will have trouble putting pressure on the qb.
Lavar
Arrington is the heart of the defense. However, this will be his 6
different defensive coordinator in as many years as he has been in the
NFL. Arrington has the passion and the fire, but rarely is disciplined,
and finds himself overrunning the play or miss it by trying to do too
much. He must play with a more controlled abandon than in the past.
Quarterback
- The Skins sent a 3rd round pick to Jacksonville for Mark Brunell.
Gibbs prefers veteran quarterbacks and was no different this year with
Brunell starting. Ramsey only completed 53% of his passes, and was
beaten senseless. Hasselback is a capable backup, but he is still rather
green.
Offensive
line - The line must improve from last year, where they allowed 43 sacks
and numerous hits to Ramsey and Hasselback. A big hit came in the 1st
preseason game where Jon Jansen, the Skins best o-lineman, blew out his
Achillies Tendon and is out for the season. The only positive was that
it happned early. This will be a more run oriented line with max
protection, not the line that had a tight end blocking a Pro Bowl
d-lineman some of the time due to poor coaching. Joe Bugel will change
that with his enthusiasm.
2004
Outlook: The Skins will be better and more enthusiastic and disciplined than
the previous 2 years with Steve Spurrier. They will have a tough time in
a ultra-competitive division. They will contend for the wild card, but
will come up short at 8-8." Scott

"Washington
Preview. There will be a much more detailed one coming here from Scott
Baxter in the next two weeks. Gone
is the (No)Fun and Gun(less) 'O' under Coach Steve "Ballgame"
Spurrier. Mr.
Banditball decided last
Dec., the Tuesday after the season ended 6-10-0 in the
Nation's Capital that
Coaching 'coach' Danny Boy Snyder's version of Fantasy
Football was really
a drug and after 17 years since his last Pro gig, with the Tampa Bay
Bandits of the USFL,
Spurs would just sit around in the Florida sun and wait for the next
NCAA gig that
appealed to him, would come along.
So Danny Boy dug deep into his deep
pockets and hired already
(barely) in the Hall-of-Fame in Canton, Ohio, Mr NASCAR,
Joe Gibbs. Gibbs won
one real Super Bowl and two Strike shortened year Super Bowls
and was blown out
38-9 in one more real Super Bowl, in '84 by the (then) Los Angeles
Raiders, in his 12 years with Washington from 1980-92. Gibbs promptly
sold his 2.5%
ownership in the Atlanta Falcons and is letting his sons run his end of
the NASCAR biz while
he tries to get
these bozos turned around again. Good luck Joe! So far in training
camp, New pivot Mark
Brunell has outplayed both disgruntled young former 'QB of the future'
Pat Ramsey and
promising Tim Hasselbeck who's brother is the starter of the Seahawks
of the NFC West.
Gone are Danny Wuerffel (which means throw in german), Shane Matthews
and most of the rest of the
crew that stumbled around for three seasons for Spurrier.
Gibbs got Mike Sellers back
from his three-strikes your out suspension to the
CFL (Winnipeg) and will try to make the good former CFL'r a TE. Once
again, good luck Joe.
Ultra-clean-cut Brunell will be an improvement over the three that took
turns embarrassing
themselves the last couple years, here. In from Denver to lend a hand are
RB Clint Portis, who
is no John Riggins in his
prime and Centre Len Freidman, who is no Jeff Bostic
in his prime. Portis
has unlimited potential but Friedman is stopgap.
No real Hogs now with
OT Jon Jansen out
for the year with a knee injury. Most of Gibbs Super Bowl winning/ring
wearing staff is back, a little grayer and longer in the tooth. But Gibbs
has one thing on his
side; he Coaches in the NFC
Least. Prediction: 8-7-1 with Brunell at QB. 8-8-0
with either
Hasselbeck or Ramsey behind Centre!" Moose

Mon,
July 27, 03 "Scott's Washington Redskins preview" Myk Aussie
From
Scott Mooses mate: Washington Redskins (7-9, 3rd in the NFC East in 2002)
For the Redskins under the first year coach Steve Spurrier it was this,
when they ran the ball more than they passed, they won, when they passed more
then they ran, they lost. They were 6-2 when they run more than pass, 1-7
when the opposite happens. This, however, does not sit well with
"Ball Coach" for he believes that his pass happy "Fun and Gun"
offense will work in the NFL.
The success for the Skins this year rides on the arm of 2nd year
quarterback Patrick Ramsey. Ramsey threw 9 TD's and 8 INT's last year as he was one
of three quarterbacks that Spurrier used during the year. While showing
flashes of brilliance, especially against the Titans when filling in for Danny
Wuerffel, most often he was overmatched, primarily against teams that
game planned against him when was a starter. He must take care of the football
more, as evidenced by his 10 fumbles last year, but he does have a cannon
for an arm and has shown improvement at times throughout the year. If Spurrier will stick with him through the tough times (a trait that
Spurrier never has), Ramsey could turn out to be a All-Pro quarterback in the near
future.
In the off season the Skins were the most aggressive team in the free
agent market. Most notably, they signed Randy Thomas (Jets) and Dave Fiore
(49ers) to help their offensive line, veteran kicker John Hall, wide receiver
Laveranues Coles, and kick returner Chad Morton, all three from the Jets.
Unlike three years ago when the Skins overspent for older veterans and washed up players, these signings, for the most part were very smart. The
Skins made a wise move and traded for Trung Candidate from the Rams for a
4th round draft choice. Candidate, who performed admirably when Marshall Faulk was injured in 2001, was in Mike Martz's doghouse this year. In
Candidate, Spurrier can definitely use him as a featured back, as well as
a receiver from the backfield. It was something they could not do last year
with now the since departed Stephen Davis.
Offense: The Skins could have a very good offense should Ramsey come through. The skins spent a 1st round pick on Coles, who had a breakout
season with Jets last year. He caught over 80 passes last year for over
1300 yards, and was Chad Pennington's favorite target. Coles will be the
primary receiver with Rod Gardner (71 rec., 1006 yds. 7 TDs) and 2nd round pick
Taylor Jacobs from Florida as the other two receivers. Gardner improved
on his "50-50" label as a rookie in 2001 (he catches the ball 50%
of the time.) and had respectable numbers even with three quarterbacks. Candidate is a
better fit with Spurrier's offense and the offensive line should be
better with the additions of Fiore and Thomas. The offensive line was terrible
last year, especially left tackle Chris Samuels who never recovered fully from
a bad ankle sprain during last year's preseason game against the Carolina
Panthers. He should be healthy and he and right tackle Jon Jansen are one
of the best bookends in the league. If Spurrier keeps a balanced attack,
this offense can be successful. However, Spurrier reverts to being pass happy
if he does not get any production from his running game.
Defense: The defense suffered a huge blow when Daryl Gardener left to go
the Broncos. He was the team's defensive MVP last year and presence in the
locker room. Champ Bailey and Lavar Arrington made the Pro Bowl last
year, but Gardener was the BEST player on the defensive side. To help aleviate
his departure, the Skins signed run-stuffers Brandon Noble (Cowboys), Regan
Upshaw (Raiders), plus Benard Holsey (Colts) was signed a few
days ago because of the tenious contract situation with d-tackle Dan Wilkinson.
The Skins want to restructure his contract, but Wilkinson has balked on the
offer, and might be cut during training camp. The linebackers of Jeremiah
Trotter, Jessie Armstead and Lavar Arrington were somewhat of a disappointment last year. Arrington had 11 sacks last year, but was
uncomfortable under Marvin Lewis's defensive scheme. Lewis is now gone
(much to players delight for they suspected of Lewis undermining Spurrier's
authority), and Arrington will freelance more under the new defensive coordinator. Darrell Green is now retired, but Champ Bailey is one of the
better (if not the best cover corner) in the league today. Fred Smoot,
the other corner, must improve from a disappointing 2002 season. He was out
of position many times, and will be picked on almost from week 1 on to the
end of the season.
Special Teams was horrible last year. Kicking, punting, and coverage
teams were overall probably the worst in the league last year. They signed
kicker John Hall from the Jets in order to help with teams woeful kicking game.
A good move considering they have not had a consistent kicker since Mark Moseley. The Skins overpaid for kick returner Chad Morton, but their
return team needed improvement, so I can understand why. The Skins also need to
improve on the giveaway/takeaway ratio, penalties and winning in their
divison. They were a -14 in the giveaway/takeaway ratio last year, 4th
worst in the league (only Cincinnati, Minnesota, and St. Louis were worse). 116
penalties the Skins committed was also one of the worst in the league. Plus
they went 1-5 in the division, winning the last game of the season
against Dallas (after not beating them since 1997, 10 in a row) in order to
salvage that record.
Overall: The Skins have probably the toughest first six games in the
league. 5 of the 6 were playoff teams, the other was previous champion New
England Patriots. The combined record for those 6 teams is 61-34-1. (Jets,
@Atlanta, Giants, New England, @Philly, Tampa Bay). It all depends on Spurrier and
Ramsey. Ramsey must have a good start in order for Ball Coach to keep his
confidence in him. If not, let the qb shuffling begin again. I believe
this can be a good team, but with the rugged schedule, they will be a .500
squad.
8-8" Scott
