NFLE2003 notes - 56 November 27, 2003 COLOGNE DEBUTS AT FIRE, CHAMPION GALAXY FACES ADMIRALS ON NFLEL OPENING DAY AN opening weekend trip to near neighbours Rhein Fire, followed by a home debut against the World Bowl champion Frankfurt Galaxy. That is the exciting start that awaits the NFL Europe League's new Cologne franchise. Cologne will make the short trip to Gelsenkirchen to face the Fire in the Arena AufSchalke on Sunday April 4 before playing its first game in the RheinEnergieStadion the following Saturday against the Galaxy. 

Cologne head coach PETER VAAS said: "That is a heck of an introduction to the league. I know how important it is for the city of Cologne to have us beat that team from down the river and to get the opportunity to face them in our first ever game is very exciting. We'll be ready." The defending champion Galaxy will kick off the season in the Waldstadion on Saturday April 3 with a home game against the Amsterdam Admirals. Galaxy coach DOUG GRABER has seen his team make a fast start in each of the past two seasons, winning their opening four games in 2002 and the first three last season. "We will be looking for a good start once again," he said. "In a short 10-game season, getting off to a good start is very important so we will aim to set the tone with a home win on opening day." Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS, aiming to lead the Admirals to their first World Bowl championship, said: "A road game against the defending champion is a tough way to start but a great opportunity to gauge our progress. 

The Galaxy are renowned for being strong early in the season so it will be a good test of our team." All the action on opening weekend will take place in Germany, with the Berlin Thunder hosting the Scottish Claymores on Sunday April 4 - a game that features two head coaches in new surroundings. For the first time JACK BICKNELL will begin an NFLEL season, his twelfth, as head coach of a team other than the Barcelona Dragons. The new Claymores head coach, who has an NFLEL-record 59 wins, said: "I am looking forward to getting started and trying to build a championship team for Scotland. I know the Thunder will be well coached and well prepared and it will be a tough road game to start the season." Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ spent last season as a defensive coach on Bicknell's Dragons staff. "Jack is a great coach," he said. "It will be a challenge to go up against him in the first game. 

Opening weekend is always important and we want to build some momentum by giving the fans a victory." The Admirals open their home schedule in Week 2 against the Berlin Thunder, while the Claymores play two road games in the first two weeks before staging their home opener on Sunday April 18 against Amsterdam. The NFL Europe League's twelfth season concludes on Saturday June 12 when World Bowl XII is staged at the Arena AufSchalke. (All kickoff times local. Subject to change)
