The action begins today (Thursday July 31) at the NFL Flag Football World
Championship being held in Tokyo, Japan.

The 12 to 14-year-old boys and girls will begin competing for the prestigious prize following the draw to decide the preliminary group games being played today and on Friday August 1.

Round-robin flag football action will take up the first two days of the competition with the semi finals and final and other positional games taking place on Saturday August 2, ahead of the NFL preseason American Bowl game between the New York Jets and Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Group A features Canada's strongly-fancied Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mexico's Los Diabilitos, Senri Fighting Bee of host nation Japan, the European School champion Arcus Knights, of the Netherlands, and South Korea's Wa-Ryong Middle School.

Group B consists of Thailand's Chaopraya Wittayakom School, Austria's SHS
Graz Air Force, Australia's Prince Alfred College, the USA's John McLaughlin's Flag4Kids Football Club Buccaneers and IES Pere Vives, of Spain.

"It is very good for us to face teams we have not played yet. I can feel the
intensity rising in our players and that is good as the tournament approaches."

Austria head coach BERNHARD MANDL said: "I am happy to play against teams
like the USA and Thailand because these are countries our kids don't get to
compete with every day.

"We are happy to face one European competitor in our group games in Spain
and we hope to face another - the Netherlands - in the playoffs, with a different result to the one in the European School Final in Scotland in June."

programme involving more than one million boys and girls ages 8 to 14. NFL

Wed, July 30 03 "Children from around the globe gather in Japan for NFL Flag Football World Championship! Prince Alfred College Adelaide,  Sth Australia my home city represents Australia! " Myk Aussie

Way to go Sth Australia representing Australia! Unreal comments below from Doug Quinn Senior Vice-President of NFL International who I personally met several times at this years Super Bowl week in San Diego.

From Neil Reynolds Public Relations Manager NFL Europe

Youngsters from around the globe gather in Japan to compete at NFL Flag Football World Championship

YOUNG American football players from around the world have arrived in Tokyo,
Japan, to compete for glory in the NFL Flag Football World Championship.

The 12 to 14-year-old boys and girls will begin competing for the prestigious prize when the tournament kicks off at Tokyo's Aminovital Field on Thursday July 31.

Round-robin flag football action will take up the first two days of the competition with the semi finals and final and other positional games taking place on Saturday August 2, ahead of the NFL preseason American Bowl game between the New York Jets and Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Countries represented in the annual flag football extravaganza are the USA -
winners of the last two tournaments - Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Thailand and three representatives from Europe - Austria, the Netherlands and Spain.

DOUG QUINN, Senior Vice-President of NFL International said: "The NFL Flag
Football World Championship is one of the highlights of the global football
calendar. The tournament brings kids together to have fun playing our sport
and meeting new friends, all the while experiencing a different culture. For
the children, it is truly a 'once in a lifetime' experience."

During their time in Japan, the competing children will visit Tokyo Disneyland, as well as several other local sights and tourist attractions.

Team USA will definitely enjoy watching the American Bowl match-up between
the Jets and Buccaneers following Saturday's final day of action as the John
McLaughlin's Flag4Kids Football Club Buccaneers is made up of young players
from the Tampa area.

Head coach TED WORSHAM said: "Our kids have really been looking forward to
making this trip. It is a wonderful experience for them to meet kids from all over the world, as well as to watch our favorite team in action."

Teams earned berths in the championship by winning qualifying tournaments in
their respective countries.

Quinn concluded: "Flag football is a great way for boys and girls to enjoy the game in a fun, relaxed environment. By exposing so many people to football at a young age, we hope to create many more fans and players in the years to come."

Here is a look at the 10 teams competing in this year's tournament:

Austria Graz SHS Graz Air Force

Berlin Thunder honored for extraordinary achievements in Sports!" Myk Aussie

From NFL Intl: Since the founding of the franchise, the Thunder have taken an active role in charitable efforts, community service and social activities, including helping more than 10,000 children in 250 schools experience Flag Football.

The city government honored these activities, as Senator for Sports, Youth and Education Klaus Boger (on the left in the photo) presented Thunder general manager Michael Lang (on the right in the photo) the Berlin Senate Medal for Extraordinary Achievements in Sports.

"We honor Michael Lang and the Berlin Thunder for helping young children enjoy a new sport and providing a great way to spend their time," said Senator Böger.  "American football is like life in that you have to move forward by working hard and playing as a team.  The Thunder are offering kids a way to learn something about life, while also having a good time playing the sport."

The Thunder have been an extremely successful addition to the Berlin sports scene since joining the NFL Europe League in 1999, capturing consecutive championships in 2001-2002.

"I am proud to accept this medal on behalf of our organization and the entire NFL Europe grassroots program," Lang said.  "It is an honor to offer young people an opportunity to take part in such a fun, constructive activity, and we know that through Flag Football we are  creating a new generation of football players and fans."

29 former NFL Europe League quarterbacks to
open pre-season training camps on NFL rosters

THE 2003 NFL preseason will begin in earnest this weekend (July 26-27), by
which time all 32 clubs will have opened their training camps.

NFL Europe League success stories are spread far and wide across the NFL,
especially at quarterback, where 29 passers with NFLEL experience are set to
begin training camp on NFL rosters.

Among those with NFL Europe League experience to their name are starters
BRAD JOHNSON, of the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami's JAY
FIEDLER, Cincinnati's JON KITNA and two-time NFL MVP KURT WARNER, of the St.
Louis Rams.

Others expected to compete for starting roles during training camp are
Cleveland's KELLY HOLCOMB and Carolina's JAKE DELHOMME.

Quarterbacks heading to the NFL fresh from a season of competition in NFL
Europe in 2003 include World Bowl winner QUINN GRAY, of the Frankfurt Galaxy
and Jacksonville Jaguars, two-time NFLEL Offensive Player of the Week SHAUN
HILL, who heads from the Amsterdam Admirals to the Minnesota Vikings, and
CRAIG NALL, who will take the skills he honed with the Scottish Claymores to
the Green Bay Packers.

NFL Vice-President of Football Operations JOHN BEAKE said: "The NFL Europe
League has developed a tradition of grooming young quarterbacks for bright
futures in the NFL. Players such as Kurt Warner, Brad Johnson and Jon Kitna
benefited from spells in NFL Europe and we are proud of their achievements.

"NFL Europe provides young players with valuable game-condition experience
and we have enjoyed tremendous success at every position, especially at
quarterback where the numbers making an impact in the NFL continue to grow
each year."
