Talking NFL  on The Jim Rome show on Easter Friday. Listen now!

Wow! This was big. I was lucky to get through and on his show yesterday and I talked about the time I tried to hunt down and interview Brett Favre. Refer below March 4 report below. I also talked about the Denver Broncos along with saying NFL is the equal best game in the World along with Aussie Rules Football. I talked about how Darren Bennett changed the NFL the way NFL punters now punt using the Aussie Rules Footy drop punt when they need to land the ball inside the 20 yard line. I also talked about Aussies Mat McBriar, Ben Graham and Sav Rocca currently punting in the NFL along with how the Pittsburg Steelers punter Daniel Sepulveda who is from the USA learnt and effectively uses the Aussie drop punt.
 

I believe Jim Rome has about 5 million listeners daily. He is the biggest sports radio guy in USA with his show going to many USA markets. Many places in Canada also carry his daily 3 hour sports radio show. I met Jim Rome at the Super Bowl Media centres in 03 and 04 and thus I believe this is a reason why I got through and thus got on his very popular sports radio show yesterday. Next time I need to slow down a bit and realize that the large USA audience is not used to my Aussie accent. I tend to get very excitable and passionate when I talk sports on USA and CDN radio especially when I talk about Aussie Rules Footy.

I just subscribed to his online pod cast to re listen and I was on for 3 minutes without him interrupting at all. He bagged me a bit after the 3 minutes saying "I didn't understand Myk, I heard about Brett Favre and Darren Bennett." but then he said "No Myk I did understand you. That was Myk for 3, 5, 8 minutes however long that was and yes we do see Myk down at Super Bowl's in the Media Centre. That was Myk Aussie in Calgary". Brett retiring was obviously Huge sports radio and TV talk today as Brett is a absolute legend. After several years of Brett contemplating retiring and then coming back many thought that he would go again after leading the Packers to the NFC Championship game and himself having a great year. This was not to be and today Brett announced his retirement via a voice message to a ESPN sports reporter. Brett said that although physically he could go again it was mentally very draining for him in preparing each week. I would have a guess we will now enjoy listening to Brett from the commentary box or on one of the major networks NFL panel. I hope so. What a pleasure it has been to watch Brett play this great game. 

After several of my mates in Vancouver were huge Packer fans and myself liking them because they are Australia's Colors I tried to interview Brett in the locker rooms after a loss to the Vikings in Minnesota several years ago on a Monday night. Opinion has it this is a funny and quite interesting part of my movie/documentary "Football Fan Frenzy" as I wear my Green and Gold Woodville Warriors SANFL Aussie Footy jersey and Green and Gold Aussie hat to the game, on the sidelines and then into the Packers locker rooms. I however made a mistake and learnt the hard way. Don't go in a losing teams locker rooms for interviews as some officials are not to keen on media people after a loss. On this night one Packers official for no apparent reason got upset with me. I had a official NFL media pass from the Vikings organization but..... Hmmmmm. From Moose "Green Bay Packers, 87th years. An all-time high 13 NFL Championships, including 3 of 4 in Super Bowls. Coach: Mike McCarthy, QBs: Brett (I have nothing above the waist but memories) Favre, Tom Arth, Aaron Rogers, Brooks Bollinger.

Other Key players: first round Draft Pick: THE Ohio St., LB A.J. Hawk, the best player in the draft! WR Greg Jennings, Centre/OG Jason Spitz, RBs: Samkon Gado, Ahman Green, TE Bubba Franks, LCB/WR Charles Woodson, PR Nahjeh Davenport. There's really not much to say about an aging team that wants to let the EX-star QB call all the shots and stay wwaaayyyy past his prime, but watch out for the fall out. And I am not talking about Falling Rocks either. Doug Pederson, 14-yr Pro QB (NFL/NFL E), Favre's buddy told the vet QB last year ('05) in mini camp, why don't we retire together? Favre thought about it then returned and threw a whopping career high 29 INTs.

The Pack lost 12 of 16 games and they were ugly doing it. Favre had only two good games and the Pack won four. Pederson hung around to call the plays in as a member of late Coach Mike Sherman's staff. The weird way the NFL works after the 4-12-0 season the Pack fired Sherman and Pederson! Both had helped this team get into two Super Bowls in the mid/late '90's and then they are out of work for FAVRE's bad season? Favre should have hung it up last year. To make the matters for this year worse, Craig Nall, who was insulted when the Pack drafted Aaron Rogers to be the QB of the future, last year and bolt- ed in the off-season for Buffalo. Pederson at one time was supposed to maybe be the QB of the future himself. Now he's gone. How many more Rogers/Nalls/Pedersons will the Pack see come and go before they wake up and realize that Favre is shot? It won't be funny if Brett is still at the helm by December. Predicted Finish: 3-13-0, last NFC Norris Division behind Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit." Moose

The Green Bay Packers, Green and Gold Australia's colors and Woodville Warriors colors are one of my favorite NFL teams. I look forward to again watching Brett Favre at QB leading the Packers to yet another play off berth. Let's hope Javon Walker gets his butt into training camp and has a big year for the Packers at WR catching Brett's long and most times great passes. 

I had a great time at the Vikings vs Packers NFL Monday night game in Minnesota a while back wearing my #38 Green and Gold Woodville Warriors SANFL Aussie footy jersey. You can see me wearing this great jersey in some of my MYKwebTV shows. Good luck to the Packers in 05.

From Moose Green Bay Packers, 86^th year. 3-1 in Super Bowls. Coach (but no longer Offencive Coordinator or G.M.) Mike Sherman. QBs: Brett Farve (without llooongggtime buddy Doug Pederson who retired), T.J. O’Sullivan, Craig Nall and NFL E –bound Aaron Rogers who’ll be Ready when they inaugurate our first Libertarian President (0’12?). Outlook: Brett Came roaring out of retirement jazzed for the season, his first in many years without Former NFL E backup and best friend Pederson who retired after 13 Pro Football Seasons. First Favre lost 11 lbs. And then ripped into teammate/WR Javon Walker, Who A’la Terrell Owens in Philly, is under contract but wants a big raise now.

“Get yer arce into camp” was Favre’s response. Getting Walker back would help in Brett’s case since the next Super Bowl (I still say he has one left in him) WILL be his last. He’s been flippin’ lousy in the last four years playoffs and now has hungry Duante Culpepper breathing down his neck. Culpepper and the Vikes pulled a mild upset over the Pack in the playoffs last year after Minnesota only put up an 8-8-0 Record during the Reg. Sea. And this year Culpepper, who had the seventh best passing season in NFL Qbing history, is gunning for first in the NFC North. Sorry Mike Tice and Duante, Sherman’s boys will hold onto first for one more year. with or without maely-mouthed Walker catching Favre’s hot reads. The Defence is much improved by shrude drafting and with new Defencive Coordinator Jim Bates, the ex-USFL / Ar.FL and Miami Dolphin Coach. Expect the Pack 1st in NFC North." Moose

MINNESOTA VIKINGS (5-3) at GREEN BAY PACKERS (4-4): One team coming off three wins (and a bye), one coming off two losses, including this past Monday night.

But this is Green Bay-Minnesota outside in the Wisconsin cold…a division game…and a "great rivalry," says quarterback BRETT FAVRE of the three-in-a-row Packers. That is true. The series, begun in 1961, is tied, 42-42-1, and has been split the past three seasons.

In spite of their two consecutive losses, the Vikes still rank as the NFL’s top offense, averaging an explosive 414.0 yards per game with or without injured receiver RANDY MOSS. The key to that production, of course, is unpredictable quarterback DAUNTE CULPEPPER, the league’s second-ranked passer (115.0) who has averaged almost 40 yards rushing against Green Bay (39.8).

Matchup to watch: A rejuvenated Green Bay DL, keyed by the recent return of NT GRADY JACKSON, against a rush attack that has averaged at least 4.0 yards per carry in 18 consecutive games.

Lost to Denver 31-24, Super Bowl XXXII

Coach: Mike Sherman - 43-21 (2-3 in playoffs)

2003 Record: 10-6 - Won NFC North, lost in Divisional Playoffs at Philadelphia 20-17 OT.

2003 review: The Packers won their division on their stellar play at the end of the year (after playing .500 ball the first 10 games of the season), a collapse by the Minnesota Vikings, and a miracle provided by the Arizona Cardinals. Brett Favre played exceptional, especially the Monday Night game against the Oakland Raiders the day after his father passed away, at the end of the year and the running of Ahman Green was stellar the whole year. Only Jamal Lewis of the Ravens gained more yards in one season than Green. In the playoffs, the Pack survived a thrilling OT win versus the Seattle Seahawks on a OT interception for a touchdown by Al Harris. The week after, the Pack blew  late 4th quarter lead when the Eagles converted on a 4th and 26 with under a minute to go in regulation. In OT, Favre threw probably the worst pass in his life, and the Eagles' Brian Dawkins intercepted it (could have called fair catch), and it led to the game winning FG for the Eagles. The Packers were devastated for they dominated the bulk of the game. A bitter end for a team that was the hottest going into the playoffs.

2004: "There is no sense beating around the bush...To me, it's either Super Bowl or bust. There's no sense talking it down and working our way through. If we play the way we're capable of, we have a legitimate shot." Those were the words of Brett Favre during training camp. He said it before in 1996. They won the whole thing. That Packer team in 96 was a more solid team that year. He hopes to duplicate it in 2004.

Significant Additions: Tim Couch, QB, Cleveland

Significant Subtractions: Gilbert Brown (still unsigned), Josh Bidwell (Bucs), Antuan Edwards (Dolphins), Antonio Freeman (Dolphins), Joe Johnson (still unsigned)

Question Marks:

Brett Favre - The ongoing saga of when he'll retire keeps surfacing. If the Packers win, he might. His fishing buddy, Doug Pederson, knows the offense really, really well, and has good talent. Plus he's an excellent holder. Tim Couch, recently released by the Browns, has been sub-par in Preseason and will be third string. He has not picked up the West Coast Offence of Coach Mike Sherman and his staff to the point where they trust him yet. He better hurry; he, Favre and Pederson will all be free agents in Feb. Needless to say that it is a priority to keep Favre healthy. Favre threw 35 TDs, but also threw 22 INTs. A number that needs to be cut down to an acceptable level. Favre has a tendency to keep both teams in the game, and has been less than stellar in playoff games the past 3 years.

Mike McKenzie - Their best corner has been holding out all offseason and preseason. He has stated that he does not want to play for the Packers again. Chances are that he will play. Otherwise the Packers will have to start one or two rookies opposite Al Harris. Both rookies have not been impressive in camp, and one is a 1st round pick in Ahmad Carroll. The dredlock duo maybe reduced to one if McKenzie either sits out or is traded. It would hurt the Packers' quest to be more aggressive on defense.

Strengths:

Running Back - The Packers were the best rushing team, by far, in the NFL. Besides Ahman Green, they have a Najeh Davenport and Tony Fisher to spell him. Davenport provides power at 250 pounds and surprising speed. Fisher is a very good receiver and blocker. Former
UNC alum William Henderson is still steady at fullback. The Packers have the deepest in that position in the NFL. Green ran for 1883 yards and 15 touchdowns rushing (plus 5 receiving), but he is still fumble prone with 7 fumbles in 2003. Overall, he and Davenport combined for 11 fumbles. Canadian RB Dahrran Dietrick, from Nebraska has been cut.

Wide Receiver - The combinaton of Jevon Walker, Robert Ferguson, and Donald Driver had disappointing years. This is a strength for the Packers, but it would be more solid if Driver reverts to his breakout form in 2002, and Walker becomes more than just a big play
threat.

Weaknesses:

Defense - This will be problem the whole season.

D-Line - Grady Jackson provided a plug in the middle midway through the season. However, he is still about 400 lbs. Added to the fact that Cletidus Hunt showed up out of shape, and the tackle spot is very thin. Gilbert Brown was released, and Jamal Reynolds was a
complete bust as a 1st round pick 3 years ago and since released. Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila had an average year, and teams ran to his side because he is undersized. Former Giant Kenny Holmes will provide another situational pass rusher. However they will still be susceptible to the run.

Linebacker is solid with 2nd year Nick Barnett, Na'il Diggs, and Hannibal Navies. They don't do anything spectacular, but they may be called to blitz more under new defensive coordinator Bob Slowik. Navies and Barnett are more likely because of their speed.

Secondary - Other than former William & Mary alum Darren Sharper, the secondary is suspect. Harris is aggressive because he has lost a step and the Pack might have to start an unknown at strong safety and a rookie at corner.

Special Teams - The Pack are solid in coverage and blocking. Return game is mediocre and the punting has been bad. Bryan Barker has come in to challenge draft pick B.J. Sander, who has been awful. Ryan Longwell, the team's kicker since 1997, is solid, but his kickoffs
are below average.

2004 prediction - 11-5 - Wild Card berth. I think that the Vikings are a tad better than the Packers overall in terms of speed. Not by much. Both have the same questions on defense, but the Vikings are a little better on paper because of there improvements in the offseason.  These two teams will battle for the division and home field advantage." Green Bay Packers started 192.Coach: Warren Sapp Sparring partner, Mike Sherman...'02 record:12-4-0. QBs: Brett Favre, Doug Pederson, Craig Nall, Akili Smith, WR/KR Eric Crouch...If NFL ('AAA') Euro-ball still exists next spring (the vote will by NFL owners 9/17/03), they should sent the shell-shocked Smith, who's confidence is low after his release from the Bengals in April. 

Pederson & Farve both insist this will be their swan song, so don't bet the mortgage against the Pack gettin' back to Super Bowl territory in '04 when Myk , myself & maybe Scott go to Houston-town in Feb. '04 for S.B.XXXVIII...If Mike Sherman doesn't deck Warren Sapp or vise versa, the Pack & Jon & Jay Gruden's Bucs should slug it out for the NFC crown in Jan. '04...

Reasons: Favre will not have three consecutive bad playoff performances; he's had a two-int. /4 fumble job last yr., IN GREEN BAY(!!!) in the snow v. Mike Vick & the Falcons & 2 yrs. ago a 6 int. performance v. Kurt Warner's St. Louis Rams. He & golfin' buddy Pederson, an original NFL E QB from Mont., have enough left to get the Pack back on track & #3 QB Nall was tearin' it up his spring in NFL E w/ Scotland. 

RB Ahman Green has been everything they've hoped for since he came over from Seattle several yrs. ago to replace long departed RB Levens. Losing WR Bill Schroeder last season to Div. rival Det. wasn't smart, even though they saved space in the salary cap department. FB Will Henderson helps a lot here, too w/ his timely blocks & pass receptions. 

KR/WR/QB Eric Crouch almost went to play QB w/ Toronto in the CFL but probably
won't get any time here @ pivot...He may be the team's best athlete by default but he'll help. The Special teams w/ it's weak coverage needs to improve to avoid being the team's Achilles heal. Young DB Jeremy Unertl, fresh off winning the NFL E Championship should be icing on the DB cake. This team has not many noticeable weaknesses. Expect big things this season!" Moose
