Mon, Sept 29 '03 "CFL Week 15 results & report! Moose 1 on 1 with Eskimo's Kelvin Kinney!" Myk Aussie

CFL Results - week 15 Ottawa 26 defeated Calgary21,
Saskatchewan 41 over Toronto 24, Montreal 30 over Hamilton 17
Edmonton 27 hammered British Columbia 7.

CFL Notes: from week 15

Ottawa, even with all their bad personnel moves, seems to have turned the corner and is now tied with Pinball Clemons Toronto Argonauts for second place in the east. Saskatchewan had an emotional win over TO. yesterday, bludgeoning the Argos, 41-24. The R'riders are now tied with B.C. for third place in the west. The 'Riders have a bye week this week.

Edmonton looks like the team to beat in the West now after clubbing B.C. Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium, 27-7. Myk and I got excellent interviews with Mike Pringle and Kelvin Kinney (see also the Arena Football link). Myk also spoke to Sean Fleming after the game.

More bad news for the hard-luck Stampeders with Marcus Crandell out for the year. Stamps are rumored to be bringing in Dan Crowley, formerly with Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, the Firebirds of the Arena League,
Montreal and Baltimore. Keith Smith, formerly with Saskatchewan and Edmonton will probably start v. Hamilton this week, with lefty Feterik getting some series as well. Well, at least the season is almost over Stamps fans. Crowley will probably be in the Arena league expansion draft Oct. 6th as well. The Firebirds, now in Indiana still hold his Ar.FL rights.

Moose's top three players of CFL week 15:
FB Chris Szarka, Saskatchewan
QB Ricky Ray, Edmonton &
RB/KR Kenton Keith, Saskatchewan

My Interview with Kelvin Kinney: One of my favorite Sports guys in the Pro's today is former Virginia State star DLman, Kelvin Kinney. Kelvin was born in Ohio Valley and grew up in West Virginia. He played football and basketball growing up. His dad and uncles worked in the  West Virginia coal mines. Their was a big strike in the mines over workers safety, etc. in the 1920's and 1970. In 2nd grade Kelvin and his school took a field trip to the mines. It was then that Kelvin decided he would do everything he could not to work  in those mines.

In college Kelvin played defensive end at Virginia State University. He was drafted by Washington (NFL) and played three seasons there. Then he became a free agent. A foot injury (he's totally recovered) caused a lot of teams to be weary of him. So he was drafted by the new Las Vegas Outlaws of the X-FL in Oct. '00. He played the one and only spring '01 season with the 4-6-0 Outlaws before joining the
Detroit Fury of the Ar.FL. When their season was over he joined the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL.

When their season was over, it was back to the Ar.FL. Then last year to the Edmonton Eskimos in the CFL in their '02 run to the Grey Cup that ended in a 25-16 defeat to the Montreal Alouettes. After the '02 CFL season he singed for one year with the Tampa Bay Storm of the Ar.FL. They won Arena Bowl XVII in June '03. When the season was over he signed with the Argos again. He was traded back to the Eskimos two months later.

I caught up to Kelvin after the Esks Sept. 26th game v. the B.C. Lions. I asked Kelvin where his Championship ring from the Storm was. He said they would get them in Dec. I asked Kelvin how many more years he thought he would play in both leagues. He said not more than a few more.

He bought his mother a piece of land with a house in Louisa County Virginia and she lost power recently during the hurricane like half of Virginia and Nth. Carolina. I gave Kelvin one of my cards and thanked him for his time as several people lined up to get his autograph. Myk did a great interview with Mike Pringle
and again had a chat to Sean Fleming. More next week.

Fri, Sept 26 03 "Mooses "now in Canada" CFL report!" Myk Aussie

Current Minnesota Viking (NFL) KR/WR/RB John Avery, a former M.V.P. in the X-FL, who lead the CFL in rushing last with over 1,400 yds., recently said he loved it Edmonton last season, where "he was the man". He won't have to worry about that with the Vikes! WR Ricky Walters who was top Canadian three seasons ago and who has played for the Roughriders and Eskies in 10 CFL seasons says QB Ricky Ray, the ex-arena star is the best QB he's ever seen. Wow. That's saying a lot but if I had to have one CFL QB to play in the Grey Cup to win it for me I'd still have
to go with Anthony Calvillo or Danny Mac. Or even 3 time winner Damon Allen (remember 61,000 yds.!). Calgary WR Coach Marc Lunsford was the University of Arizona's RB coach while newcomer Keith Smith was a three-yr. starter there as QB.

Mike Sellers, it appears, has an even bigger ego than his size. Says big Mike, "There isn't even a LB {in the league} that can even faze me." Yea Mike, but I tell you what can faze you, Paul LaPolice, your offencive coordinator by giving you less work, like two weeks ago, which lead to Sellers and LaPolice coming to logger-heads at practice. One more outburst like that and it'll be back to that league below the 49th parallel and then you'll really have to work every minute!

Color a bunch of overpaid Bombers gone if they don't at least get to the Grey Cup this season. To his credit, Khari Jones is really having a great season. In the last three years K threw 75 INTs. This year so far, only 13. Don't count the Bombers (or my Riders) out just yet! Memo to Michael Petrie; Chris Brazzell IS NOT overrated. He doesn't get enough work like at Edmonton last season because of five reasons: Jason Clermont, Frank Cutolo, Geroy Simon (my M.V.P. if the season ended
today) Ryan Thelwell and Bret Anderson. There is only one ball to go around and with this star- studded cast in three-down football, Dave Dickenson can only do so much. The reason I'm picking Myk's B.C. Lions over Edmonton this weekend is I really don't think Edmonton's secondary (which is good) can stop all those weapons.

My 3/4s of the season ranking of the QB tandems on the nine CFL teams:

(1) Edmonton as long as Bart Hendricks who did he blackmail? isn't in the lineup; How come Jason Maas is third?!

(2) Montreal. I know it's all Anthony Calvillo (do they even have A backup?) but the man is defending Grey Cup Champ!

(3) Saskatchewan. I know. They have four QBs. Some might derisively say 4 second stringers, but I'd say two starters and two backups. I'll let the reader
render the order.

(4) B.C. Lions. Hated to rank them fourth but if Dave Dickenson went out for the season, I don't think they'd make the Grey Cup. But with him, they probably will!

(5) Winnipeg. Khari has leveled off, and I mean that in a good way. Plus Pat Barnes is the best reserve QB in the league. Third-stringer Brian Stallworth is the son of one of the greatest WRs in NFL history, John Stallworth.

(6) Calgary. Yes, I have been wearing my Keith Smith (Saskatchewan) jersey most of the week off and on and isn't it ironic that Calgary signs him the week I'm here? I still like Marcus, but I don't hold that Cowboys crap against him! Lefty Kevin Feterik gets a bad rap but I like a lefty in the rotation and his 62.2% comp. ratio is third best in the league! Give him a break. He's been here a year before his daddy bought the team. ("Hmm that is still a questionable point. Did Wally sign Kevin knowing Michael was buying? Not sure" Myk)

(7) Toronto. I'll give you 61,000+ reasons why Damon Allen is still effective. Check his stats. Backups: Marcus Brady played pretty well in the playoff loss to Montreal last season but he needs to grow some hair. Michael Bishop can throw the ball 70 yards but looks like someone hit him in the head with a baseball bat!

(8) Hamilton. I love Danny Mac almost as much as I love Dickenson (or Crowley) but HE should be getting "sacked" in those commercials. The jury is still out on my Virginia mate Dave Corely or former Steeler deep-sub Dan Gonzalez.

(9) Ottawa. Let's see; they cut their clear cut starter after three games to save $70,000 in payroll, they're starting a cannon-armed former NFL DB/RB who can barely complete a sentence, The backup sucks and poor Darnell Kennedy, who should probably be QBing the Stamps, is third-string. Hhhmmm... Has anyone checked Honolulu Joe Paopao's flatliner lately? Is there any pulse or is it code Blue??? More tomorrow"

Rating the CFL Coaches:

(1) Don Matthews, Montreal. The one and only. Love him (I do!) or hate, he wins Grey Cups!
(2) Wally Buono, B.C. Lions. Nobody picks a staff better. He'll chase Matthews stats the rest of his career!
(3) Pinball Clemons. Nobody wears more hats or gets more out of his (lack of) talent! I love him! Plus he's from Virginia!
(4) Dave Ritchie, Winnipeg. "Slip, slidin' away..."
(5) Ron Lancaster, Hamilton. Still a legend but defeinately tarnished by a bad season. Bye Ron.
(6) Danny Barrett, Saskatchewan. Could move up to fourth next year. Stands by his players.
(7) Tom Higgins, Edmonton. Eskinator will get me for this one! Is he holding Ricky Ray and company back or are we just too hard on G.M. Tom. I'd really like to like him, but....
(8) Jim Barker, Calgary. One of my favorites who deserves another year or two to put together a program.
(9) Joe Paopao, Ottwaw. An errand boy for the boss, who chops starters off the roster to stay employed. A major disappointment. I send him a five page scouting report on Hawai'i's QB Shawn Withy-Allen, who would have been a perfect fit for the CFL (6'5", 230 lbs. with 4.4 speed in the 40) and he cans Dan "the man" & NFL Europe legend Daymeune Craig and hires an out-of-work former NFL DB/RB. Then he trades with Stamps for Darnell Kennedy and puts him under the bench at #3" Moose

Tues, Sept 23 03' "Friends of the CFL - USA Update by Rich 'Moose' Salzer. Moose who is now currently in Calgary his Rd15 picks" Myk

Today's Calgary Stampeders practice was not on the normal practice field but inside McMahon Stadium turf.  The Stamps worn their turf shoes, heavily taped. The big news items for the Media boys and girls were the addition of QB Keith Smith, the continued Immigrations paperwork wrangles of RB L. Phillips and Wane McGarity's missing today's practice to have scar tissue removed.

The biggest buzz at practice was the zip with which QBs Marcus Crandell and newcomer Keith Smith threw the ball.

Some Media guys were making negative comments about Lefty Kevin Feterik but he was very helpful in his pointing out to Smith some of the patterns that the WRs and SBs were running. Feterik, to me practiced very well and will be the number 2 QB, in coach Barker's words "at least one more week".

After the one and one half hour practice, coach Barker answered the BIG 3 Qs of the day in this matter:

#1) About new QB Smith: "He looked good. He's a bit rusty since he hasn't been active since injuring his collarbone in Edmonton near the end of camp. He's a great athlete, Keith. I wanted him to play for me in L.A. But he was under contract to Saskatchewan. He's not here for the short term, as a number 3. I wouldn't have brought anybody in here for that.  Keith can run and has a great arm. He's 100% healthy. He probably won't play this weekend in Ottawa. Marcus is number one and Kevin is number two for at least one more week." Coach Barker

#2) On Lawrence Phillips: "Lawrence is still waiting to get his work visa paperwork updated. He was still on his work visa from Montreal. Even if he gets back here tomorrow and practiced, he wouldn't be eligible to play Friday v. Ottawa. Lawrence has been a model citizen here. The people of Calgary have made him feel real welcome, he and his family. We will start Saladin McCullough and play Scott Diebert
and Regimbald. You guys (Calgary Sports Media) are making this thing with Phillips to be bigger than it is." Coach Barker

#3) On Wane McGarity missing practice today: "Wayne had to have scar tissue removed. He'll be here at practice tomorrow. He'll play Friday v. Ottawa."

I asked coach Barker how many carries the team would need from Scott Diebert to win v. Ottawa on Friday, and he joked "at least zero", which cracked everybody up and loosened the atmosphere in the Media up. Also there was a great article in the Calgary Sun about Mark McLaughlin and Duncan O' Mahony, who I spoke with following yesterday's practice. More tomorrow from the "Best damn Sports
WebTV/site on the planet. " Moose

Mooses Rd15 picks: Saskatchewan over Toronto, Calgary over Ottawa,
B.C. over Edmonton, Hamilton vs Montreal O.T. tie.

"Your still Hurricaned out! Tiger-Cats will get hammered!" Myk

Mon, Sept 22 03' "Friends of the CFL - USA Update by Rich 'Moose' Salzer. Moose who is now currently in Calgary" Myk

Montreal Alouettes 28, Saskatchewan Roughriders 23
British Columbia Lions 26, Winnipeg Blue Bombers 20
Edmonton Eskimos 45, Ottawa Renegades 33
Toronto Argonauts 24, Hamilton Tiger-Cats 14

CFL Notes: A lot of relatively low scoring games in the CFL this weekend. The Montreal vs Saskatchewan game was a classic, though. Roughriders have lost 5 of last 7 and are having trouble putting complete games together. Nealon Greene is playing well enough for this team to win though. Argonauts, who will probably play a cross over game in 1st round of the playoffs, have it tough the rest of the season.

Calgary should beat Ottawa this Friday. Myk and I will be at the Eskies game this
Friday though. The Stampeders looked pretty good today in practice. Myk and I talked for 5 minutes to new Kicker and still Punter Duncan O'Mahony this morning around Noontime. He hit 12 of 13 kicks to end practice. As many know, former longtime Stamps kicker Mark McLaughlin is now the new President in charge of Football Operations for Calgary.

The Edmonton Eskimos defeated the Renegades. Some of the stars included former University of Hawai'i DB Robert Grant, who returned an interception for a TD and of course, Ricky Ray, the QB who started his career in the Af2 playing the Hawai'i Islanders while he was with the Fresno Frenzy. I have this game on tape thanks to the Hawai'ian Islanders great Store Staff.

Dave Dickenson is still tearing it up with that great receiving corps for the B.C. Lions. The way it looks now, the best three choices for Canadian League M.V.P. this season are: Geroy Simon, WR, B.C., Anthony Calvillo, QB, Montreal & Ray at QB for the Eskies. In other Canadian Football news: In the C.J.F.L. Praire
Conference the Saskatoon Hilltops are still undefeated  and the Edmonton Huskies beat the Calgary Colts by the unconscionable score of 79-0! Youths ages 17 to 22 are eligible to play in CJFL. In the coming weeks I'll have the complete history of CJFL complete with the Champions going back to 1925. Stay tuned!" Moose

International Players well represented on NFL Kickoff rosters!

New Orleans wide receiver
Jerome Pathon is one of 10 Canadians on NFL teams

Players from around the world are well represented on NFL rosters, as the league’s 84th season is off to an exciting start.

In New Orleans, wide receiver JEROME PATHON is one of 10 Canadians contributing to NFL teams and an important part of a Saints offense that produced a franchise-record 432 points in 2002.

Born in Capetown, South Africa, Pathon and his family moved to Canada when he was five years-old. After playing his first organized football game at Vancouver’s Carson Graham High School, he knew he had found his calling.

“The excitement and intensity of that first football game was amazing,” Pathon said. “I had never experienced anything like it. There are consistent, exciting plays in football that can be made on every down.”

Pathon began his collegiate career at Nova Scotia’s Acadia University, concluding his first season with 44 receptions for 868 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning honors as Canadian football’s top rookie.

Then after transferring to Washington and establishing himself as one of the most prolific receivers in school history, he achieved his NFL dream when the Indianapolis Colts selected him in the second-round of the NFL Draft.

“We have high expectations for our offense and our team this year,” said Pathon, who conducts an annual football camp in Vancouver. “As receivers, we have to do everything possible to make a difference.”

Other Canadians on NFL rosters include: kickers Steve Christie (San Diego) and Mike Vanderjagt (Indianapolis), punter Mitch Berger (New Orleans), defensive end Rob Meier (Jacksonville), center JP Darche (Seattle), quarterback Jesse Palmer (NY Giants), tight ends OJ Santiago (Oakland) and Teyo Johnson (Oakland) and running back Kerry Carter (Seattle).

Boy can the Moose pick 'em or what? I told anyone with ears on that Calgary, even in the desperate straights they are in would beat overrated Winnipeg (or maybe I should say overrated Khari Jones)! Bark's job is on the line & so is Legendary Ron Lancaster in Steeltown so Hamilton & Calgary are going to try to salvage their bad seasons as best as is possible! Don't bet against these two the rest of the year, unless you got your Christmas bonus early!! I am disappointed that my beloved Roughriders lost. Myk Aussie & I will be there in Riderville/ Grey Cup '03 town on Sept. 28th. Look for us. Also Myk & Moose will be at the following Eskie games the next two weekends: Sept. 19th & Sept. 26th.

Fri, Sept 12 03 "Moose's response to TSN's Chris Schultz article! A massive CFL Player Special coming this Sat!" Myk

Hope you have your Billy Gates loaded PC and High Speed Internet all ready & you can read, this Saturday me 1 on 1 with a star CFLer.

Myk: Please post my response to our friend Chris Schultz article on Total. Thanks. In response to Chris Schultzie & CFL bashers. #1) Let's live in a word of reality for a minute please. Hockey is, always was & always will be the dominant Sports Culture in 'O' Canada. Period. #(2) Football is & always will be the dominant Sports culture here in the U.S. Personally I like Chris Schultz very much but sometimes he gets a bit negative.

I'll tell you why the NFL is overrated & the third best football league out there:
#1 When I want to see real football I hop a flight to Canada. Reasons: Football started in Canada 1st & I want to see it played the right way, the Canadian way the way my granddad's people played it! #2 No one seems to mention the Arena League, which constantly produces great NFL players. #3 If NFL (AAA) Europe was so good, why then do most all of the best NFL athletes @ positions such as QB: Trent Green, Doug Flutie, Jeff Garcia, Ks & Ps: Steve Christie, Mike Vanderjagt, Mitch Berger, Eddie Murray, Darren Bennett from either Canada or Australia?

How about WRs: Does anyone remember Marc Boerigter &  Joe Horn? How about former Las Vegas Posse Tamarik Vanover? Why is it the NFL has to raid Arena Football, CFL rosters all the time to stock their league? Because their game is not as good as the CFL or Arena League, that's why. Period. There, I'm man enough to say it. The Arena Football League is the greatest Sport ever invented. (And I know Myk &  his mates Darren Bennett & Mat McBriar would say Aussie Rules Footy, which I like as well.) Arenaball takes the best parts of the NFL mixed with the NHL. Anybody that thinks that those overweight millionaires in the NFL could play as well in the Hockey rinks of Arenaball, the fastest game on turf, or in the CFL is seriously diluted. Whatever their smoking, it ain't any good for them!

If Schultz says he loves the NFL, fine. I have no problem with the NFL but a Toronto Phantoms game in '01 I met the most obnoxious anti-CFL Canadian I ever hope to meet. His friend with him, a CFL fan & I met at the Argos game the next night. I have no problem with Torontonians who liked the Phantoms. I used to fly from Virginia to see them! But not at the expense of the Argos. Now being an American (a Canadian-American at that), I can't understand the anti-CFL crowd.

Canadians are the luckiest people in the world with Football. They have the CFL, CIS &  CJFL live, the NFL, Arenaball & NFL E on T.V. I hope to Schultzie & Glen Suitor at the Grey Cup parties this year like Myk Aussie I saw them in San Diego at the Super Bowl Raiders media day and the media massive party. Thanks for the cover Schultzie but your article still doesn't go far enough! Signed your friend" Moose Salzer

Thurs, Sept 11 03 "Moose advises us on Grey Cup 2003 Activities! Stamps over Bombers are you serious Moose!" Myk Aussie

By: Moose "The reason why Calgary will beat Winnipeg this weekend is that Bark's job is seriously on the line & that goes for Myk's boy L. Phillips (I've demoted him from 'larry' - I won't even Capitalize either!). I still do not believe in Khari - until or unless he wins a Grey Cup. But his INTs. are way down this year. Saskatchewan leads the league in rushing which should not surprise anyone.

They've made no bad moves this yr., but would be wise to let both Rocky & Glenn go
& (re-)sign former back-up QB Keith Smith or maybe Dan Crowley. Both have previous Grey
Cup experience. Glenn & Rocky have shown to be @ least be good backups. They deserve to
go to Ottawa or Hamilton both teams along w/ TO. need better overall QBs. Nothing wrong
with Danny Mac or Damon Allen. But if those guys go down...Well, actually Hamilton is way
down anyway! Other question that intrigued me was on Total, someone asking if Kordell
would be a good CFL QB. I think he could be but it's obvious he needs work on footwork,
mechanics & release. The perfect reason for him to go home to New Orleans & play for
both of Tom Benson (boogie)'s teams: Voodoo & Saints. He needs to play Arenaball, I believe
to recapture that 'ole ('97 & '99 season magic). Look what Arenaball did for both Kurt Warner
& Tommy Maddox. And the CFL wasn't interested in both of them. Shame on the CFL that time.
