Two new coaches to welcome to the NFL 'AAA' ranks this
spring season, but actually they are veterans of the NFL E wars
themselves. Former Rhein Fire 'O' Coordinator, Mike Jones takes over for Doug
Graber at Frankfurt and Rick Lantz takes over at Berlin as former two-time
Championship winning coach, Pete Vaas goes to new club Cologne (formerly
Barcelona). 'Cowboy' Jack Bicknell, Doug Flutie's college coach moves up to
Scotland to replace fired Gene Dahlquist who had the unpardonable sin of NOT
getting the Claymores in the World Bowl XI at home last season.
Predicted Order of Finish:
1) Amsterdam Admirals, Two NFL E Championship appearances, 0 wins {one as
Montreal Machine, one as Admirals, '95} (career mark; 55 wins, 57 losses) Coach:
Bart Andrus. Key Players: QBs David Priestly, Gibran Hamdan, Nate Hybl. The
Admirals are the only team in this league to have never won the NFL 'AAA'
Championship. They are 0-2. That will
change this year as they have a good group of National Players such as 8-yr
japanese LB Masa Kawaguchi and Mexican WR Carlos Rosado (a late cut last August
by the N.Y. Jets. Predicted finish: 8-2-0 -Champions.
2) Scotland Claymores, Two NFL E Championship appearances, 1 win (career mark;
42 wins, 50 losses) Coach: Jack Bicknell. QBs: Clint Stoerner, Curt Anes, Tory
Woodbury. After a fine 62-53 mark in all 11 years in the history of the (late)
Bareclona Dragons, "Cowboy" Jack Bicknell moves to the U.K. as the Coach of my
favorite NFL Europe team, the Claymores. He'll have his work cut out for him if
Stoerner, the Claymore '01 starter doesn't get out of the gates quickly. Tory
Woodbury, who the Jets desided to keep as the #3 over vet Jamie Martin for '04
is an interesting athlete, as is 'slash' (QB/RB/WR) Tom Arth. Chris Horn, who
lit it up for two years as the fastest player in
the Arena League for Danny White's Arizona Rattlers, will be on loan from Rose's
Kansas City Chiefs and should be a terror with his speed at both WR & KR.
National players include Scott (Scoups) Couper, a WR with 101 career catches for
8 TDs and DL Robert Flickinger. The NFL 3rd/4th string allocated players looked
good down in trainig Camp in Tampa and Jack, should be able @ 66-yrs old to get
one more World Bowl appearance before he retires. It'll be this season.
Prediction: 7-2-1.
3) Frankfurt Galaxy, Five NFL E Championship appearances, 3 wins (career mark;
57 wins, 57 losses, 1 tie) Coach: Mike Jones. QBs: T.J. O'Sullivan, Kirk Farmer,
Bret Engeman. Jones, a lloooooongggg time NFL E assistant was a good choice to
replace Doug Graber, who didn't properly utilize his National players.
That should change this season with the offencive minded Jones at the helm.
Other quality National players include: K Ralf Kleinmann, DL Danny Benetka and
Finnish RB (Don Cherry would love him!) Eero Heinonen. The NFL allocated players
are basically a bunch of nobodies, except for former Washington RB, Skip Hicks,
sent over by the Cincinnati Bengals. This team has had it good the last couple
years but I don't think they'll make the World Bowl this go around. But they
will score points! Prediction: 6-3-1.
4) Rhein Fire, Five NFL E Championship appearances, 2 wins (career mark; 55
wins, 40 losses, the highest winning percentage in NFL E history, to date)
Coach: Pete Kuharcheck. QBs: Chad Hutchinson, Greg Zolmann, Wes Phillips{former
#2 with San Diego, Af2}. The Rhein Fire should have won the World Bowl last
season but had six turnovers in Glasgow, Scotland last June that deepsixed them.
They will drop in the standings this year because they have only two good
defencive players entering the season, and both are vets of the NFL 'AAA's: LB
Joe Tuitele, back after a yr. absence
and DL Bastian (the beast) Lano, a very good National player. Team speed could
be the best assest this unit has, on both sides of the ball, this spring. New
'O' Coordinator Whitey Ford, a vet coach in NFL E ranks will have his hands full
with this bunch. But he is good getting the most out of his troups. Still,
Prediction: 4-6-0.
5) Berlin Thunder, Three NFL E Championship appearances, 3 wins {one-0 as
London/England Monarchs, two-0 as Thunder}(career mark; 51 wins, 61 losses)
Coach: Rick Lantz. QBs: David Rivers, Rohan Davey, Marc Dunn. Only good National
players like long- snapper/WR Jorg Heckenbach,RB Kim Kuci return. A
problem could be the retirement of quality National K Alex Kruse. Hayden Epstein
tries to fill in. He's benn cut by three NFL teams. The QBs are second rate and
the special teams is the worst in the league at kick coverage. New Coach Rick
Lantz, who like Frankfurt's Jones, is moving on up into a H.Coaching position
(and ovedue, like Jones, at that) will have his hands full with this bunch. If
Berlin can hold it's own v. Frankfurt and the Rhein and win both v. newcomer
team Cologne (old Barcelona), they may have a slim chance. Don't bet on it.
Sorry, Rick. Prediction: 3-7-0
6) Cologne Centurians, Five NFL E Championship appearances, 2 wins {as Barcelona
Dragons} (career mark; 62 wins, 53 losses) Coach: Pete Vaas. QBs: Todd Husak,
Rob Adamson, Ryan Van Dyke. This team should have traded Ryan for Jerry Van
Dyke. At least they would get some laughs this year. Coach Vaas won two World
Bowls in-a-row way back in '00 & '01. Husak was out of all Football last year
after getting cut by the Jets in late August. When the Rams put vet Martin (see
above) on waivers, Husak was gone. (Woodbury, see also above was on the Jets
practice squad). Adamson,
if he can get in the lineup by the third game (remember kids, a 10 game
schedule) they might be able to make a push in their first year en Deuschland.
But they don't enough good National players to make a serious run until '05.
But, as I said last year, don't ever count out a (Re-)Pete Vaas coached team.
Acquiring TE Werner Hippler, born in
Cologne, the ex-Charger and former X-FL Las Vegas'r, will help. Vaas isn't
afraid to throw to his National players. And Hippler, between three leagues has
81 catches, wiht a high of 30 on the '99 Championship Frankfurt team.
Prediction: 2-8-0.
2004 Season Picks: M.V.P. Rhein QB, Chad Hutchinson
National Player of the Year: Jorg Heckenbach, WR/KS, Berlin Thunder
Champions: Amsterdam Admirals
Coach of the year: Bart Andrus, Amsterdam" Moose

Wed, Mar 17 04' "Admirals, Fire, Claymores mark 10th season with
anniversary logos! Moose's 04 NFL Europe previews coming next week!" Myk Aussie
From David Tossell at NFL Europe media.
THE 2004 NFL Europe League season will be a very special one for three teams.
The Amsterdam Admirals, Rhein Fire and Scottish Claymores are all celebrating
their tenth anniversary season.
To mark the occasion, each team will feature a 10th-anniversary logo during the
2004 season. The players will wear the logo on their uniform pants and teams
will produce special merchandise featuring the design.
NFL
Europe League managing director JIM CONNELLY said: "The Admirals, Fire and
Claymores have worked hard to become part of the sporting community in their
various cities. They have established great relationships with local government,
business and media and have enjoyed the outstanding support of dedicated fans.
We feel it is appropriate to mark their anniversaries with this special logo."
The Fire have been one of the most successful teams in NFLEL history since
beginning franchise history with two losing seasons in 1995 and 1996. Since then
they have never posted a losing mark, winning two World Bowls (1998 and 2000)
and losing in three more, including the last two seasons. They have also
achieved some of the highest attendances in league history and will this season
host World Bowl for the third time.
The Admirals are the only current NFLEL team apart from newcomers Cologne
Centurions never to win to a World Bowl. They played in World Bowl '95, but have
not returned to the championship game since - although they successfully staged
World Bowl IX in 2001.
The Scottish Claymores were World Bowl winners in 1996, when they hosted the
game at Murrayfield, Edinburgh, and also staged last season's World Bowl at
Hampden Park, Glasgow.
"One of my very favorite pins on my Aussie hat is the Scottish Claymores pin
that was given to me at Super Bowl 37 in San Diego by the great Claymore ladies.
Good luck to all the NFL Europe teams & especially the Scottish Claymores. Next
week I will feature Moose's excellent NFL Europe 04 previews." Myk

All-NFL Europe League performers among second group of players to arrive at
NFLEL Training Camp in Tampa Bay, Florida.
From Neil Reynolds Public Relations Manager NFL Europe
Remaining NFLEL players arrive for training camp;
All-League performers on parade in Tampa Bay
NFL Europe welcomed back some familiar faces on Sunday as several All-League
performers arrived in Tampa Bay, Florida, for preseason training camp.
Among the defensive players, offensive linemen, kickers and punters arriving in
Florida were stars of the Rhein Fire's 2002 season in linebacker MAUGAULA
TUITELE and cornerback EARTHWIND MORELAND, as well as Berlin Thunder linebacker
YUBRENAL ISABELLE, former Barcelona Dragons punter NICK MURPHY and Scottish
Claymores kicker ROB HART.
The arriving players underwent a series of physical tests and attended a welcome
orientation meeting. Offensive skill position players will take part in a
two-day passing camp beginning on Monday March 1. The first full squad practices
begin on Wednesday March 3.
Tuitele was the focal point of the Fire defense in 2002, recording 61 tackles
and 1 sack en route to a place in World Bowl X - a game Rhein lost at home to
Berlin.
The playmaking linebacker said: "I want to show the coaches I can still play
during my time here in training camp and when we go over to Europe I want to
help the team win a World Bowl. We lost the last two so hopefully it will be a
case of third time being a charm."
Hart led NFL Europe with 64 points in 2003 and is excited about making an
expected return to Scotland. All kickers and punters will be assigned to the
NFLEL teams following a kicking camp taking place in Tampa this week.
Hart said: "It should be a pretty good season in Scotland and I am really
looking forward to working with Jack Bicknell and his staff, Hopefully, we can
kick-start something early in the season and win the World Bowl this year."
Isabelle earned All-NFL Europe League honors as a member of the Scottish
Claymores in 2003 but is one of several former Scotland players heading to
Berlin for the 2004 season. Joining Isabelle with the Thunder are defensive end
T.J. BINGHAM, who led the Claymores with 7 sacks in 2003, cornerback KEITH
HEYWARD-JOHNSON and defensive tackle DEVONTE PETERSON, who is returning for a
third season in NFL Europe.
All four former Claymores defenders will team up with new Berlin Thunder
coordinator JIM TOMSULA, who previously served as defensive line coach in
Scotland.
Bingham said: "I am very happy to be reunited with coach Tomsula and I am
looking forward to learning a lot about the city of Berlin. I enjoyed Scotland
last year and I'm now excited about experiencing life in Germany and Berlin."
Also making a welcome return to NFL Europe on Sunday was Amsterdam Admirals 2003
cornerback TODD HOWARD, who said: "I'm looking forward to getting back on the
field and working with the Admirals coaches. I'm hoping to perform well and help
my team win a lot of games. It's great to have another opportunity to impress
the 32 teams in the NFL."
Many defensive players and offensive linemen already had their game faces when
they arrived in Tampa on Sunday and the desire to get onto the field and start
hitting was evident and best summed up by Cologne Centurions safety JERTON EVANS
(San Diego Chargers), who said: "I can't wait to get started - I just want to
hit. I hate not being on the field hitting people so I am very keen to get this
season going." Neil

18 NFL quarterbacks among offensive players touching down for NFLEL training
camp in Florida
PREPARATIONS for the 2004 NFL Europe League campaign got underway in earnest on
Friday when the first American players - including 18 NFL quarterbacks - arrived
in Tampa Bay, Florida, to participate in preseason training camp.
Offensive skill position players and centers underwent physicals and orientation
meetings upon their arrival in Florida and will hit the practice field on Monday
for a two-day passing camp.
Defensive players, remaining offensive linemen, kickers and punters arrive on
Sunday and full squad practice sessions begin on Wednesday March 3.
Among the promising young players checking in on Friday were quarterbacks CHAD
HUTCHINSON (Dallas Cowboys), ROHAN DAVEY (New England Patriots) and J.T.
O'SULLIVAN (New Orleans Saints).
Hutchinson, of the Rhein Fire, played in nine games for America's Team in 2002
and remains the only athlete to pitch in Major League Baseball and start in the
NFL.
The 6-foot-5, 237-pound passer is excited about the upcoming NFL Europe League
season, as he explained: "I am very excited about having the opportunity to
prove myself in NFL Europe. This league has been very productive for
quarterbacks and I aim to make the most of this chance. I'm anxious to get on
the field and get this season started."
Davey will lead the Berlin Thunder's World Bowl charge just a few short weeks
after winning a Super Bowl ring as the third quarterback during New England's
thrilling victory over the Carolina Panthers in Houston.
Looking ahead to the 2004 NFLEL campaign, Davey said: "I want to come out of
here as a winner. I want to get some time on the field because I haven't really
got my feet wet for a while. I'm looking forward to getting to Berlin and have
had heard good things about Germany."
O'Sullivan, a sixth round draft choice of the Saints in 2002, will compete for
the starting quarterback job in Frankfurt and look to lead the Galaxy to a
second consecutive World Bowl crown.
"This is a great opportunity to compete in a camp environment. It's going to be
a great experience. I'm just looking forward to going out, meeting the players
on the team and getting after it on the field," O'Sullivan said.
Three quarterbacks touching down in Tampa on Friday - CLINT STOERNER (Miami
Dolphins), DAVID PRIESTLEY (Seattle Seahawks) and DAVID RIVERS were familiar
with the NFL Europe League player arrival process, having already played in the
league.
Stoerner started 10 games for the Scottish Claymores in 2001 and is now
preparing for the 2004 campaign with the Amsterdam Admirals. Priestley returns
for a second straight season with the Admirals, while Rivers is heading to
Berlin after his 2003 season in Amsterdam was cut short due to a knee injury.
Some promising running backs also checked in at training camp as AVON COBOURNE
(Detroit Lions), TRAVIS STEPHENS (Houston Texans), LEONARD HENRY (Miami
Dolphins) and RAY JACKSON (Tennessee Titans) arrived in Tampa.
Cobourne played in seven games for the Lions in 2003, rushing for 27 yards on 10
carries. He also caught 4 passes for 30 yards, returned 7 kickoffs for 123 yards
and recorded 5 special teams tackles. Cobourne will be a key member of the
Cologne Centurions in 2004.
Stephens, a fourth round draft choice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002, will
spearhead the rushing attack of the Amsterdam Admirals, while Jackson, who
played in Tennessee's final game of the 2003 NFL season, will suit up for the
Berlin Thunder.
Henry, a seventh round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2002, will form a
useful partnership with NFL veteran SKIP HICKS (Cincinnati Bengals) at the
Frankfurt Galaxy, although Hicks was unable to join his new team-mate on Friday
after being stranded in snowy Charlotte, Carolina.
Henry said: "I have heard a lot about the Galaxy fans and how they really love
their team and get into the game. It's something big over there during this time
of the year, so I'm excited to get to Frankfurt and see how the fans are." Neil
