NFLE2004
notes - 29 October 21, 2004 NFLEL DISCONTINUES OPERATIONS OF SCOTLAND CLAYMORES
NFL E has discontinued operations of the Scotland Claymores, NFL E Managing
Director JIM CONNELLY announced today. "This is the toughest decision this
league has ever had to make," said Connelly. "The Claymores have
achieved considerable success over the past decade and for any sports team to
average close to 11,000 fans per game in this market is commendable. "But
the economics of our league and the interest shown by other cities have forced
us to look at whether there are other markets that give us a greater opportunity
of improving our business. We believe at this time that such an opportunity
exists." The Claymores have been part of the NFLEL since 1995, posting an
average attendance of 10,799 during their 10 seasons. They achieved a
franchise-record average attendance of 13,904 in 2001, but have seen crowds fall
for the past three seasons.
The
NFLE will announce details of where the franchise will be moved in the near
future. Connelly praised the work of Claymores general manager STEVE LIVINGSTONE
and his staff. "We have nothing but admiration for the job that the
Claymores front office has done. As well as introducing new fans to the sport,
they have developed important relationships and established a base for the game
at the grassroots level that we hope to maintain and build upon in the future.
"We are aware of the deep disappointment that will be felt by the many
Claymores fans and thank them for the loyal support they have given to the team.
We also thank all the coaches, players and staff who have contributed to the
franchise over the years." Connelly explained that the NFL will retain a
football development team in Scotland to continue the grassroots programs that
the Claymores have successfully introduced in local schools and will continue to
identify and develop young Scottish talent as part of NFL Europe's National
Player Development Program.
My
comments: "It is indeed a sad day for all Claymore fans, myself included. I
have been an ardent supporter of American Football in the Arbroth since the
Montreal Machine relocated to Amsterdam, Holland, The Netherlands in '95. I will
resume rooting for that franchise now that my beloved Claymores are gone. Myk
and I just missed going to the NFL (AAA) Europe Bowl in Scotland, June 2003. We
met and took pictures of two lovely lasses from Scotland at the Media Centre for
the Super Bowl in San Diego back in late Jan. of '03. Cathrine and Beth, we
still love, the hottest CWOSs' on on planet Earth." Moose
"Moose
in deed it is sad news. The Claymores pin on my hat is my very favorite.

Europe Off season Report" Moose Salzer
"The
free agency period and European player tryouts are going on in the U.K.
and Deutschland right now, in London and Cologne. Remember only 48
lucky non-Canadian/ non-American born players get to play in the NFL 'AAA's
next spring. There are currently five former NFL Europers on NFL team
practice - squads, which of course doesn't included the many Amer- I-cans
and Canad-I-ans who are also on NFL team rosters. Eight year NFL Europe
great, K Ralf Kleinmann (1995-2000;2002-04) has retired as a Frankfurt
Galaxy player after he was traded to the Cologne Centurians as
part of a 'past-player' deal.
He is third alltime in NFL E scoring with 325
points on FGs & XPs. Next season, each team will have a 41 man roster
with 7 practice squad spots on the six NFL Euro teams. Canadians are
exempted from having to compete in the fall with NFL Europe player camps. They
will attend the NFL E camp in Orlando in Late Feb-late March,
like their American counterparts. A different rule exists in the Af2
'AAA'. More on that later." Moose

NFL

First,
tow German teams fought for the Championship, kinda hard when ONLY 4 of
the 6 teams in the NFL 'AAA's are
based in Germany, eh? Berlin won their 4th title
in two different cities (London in
'91, Berlin in '01, '02 & '04), in four tries.
Frankfurt had a
disadvantage with Saints' allocated QB J.T. O'Sullivan being off for three
weeks due to the death of
his father back home. O'Sullivan played well enough for the
Galaxy (the only team left in the
League in it's original '91 home from WLAF).
Frankfurt lost TE Werner Hippler to his birthplace Cologne and the new Centurians
(Hippler had helped Frankfurt win
all three titles) {Old Barcelona Dragons - I
just got a card from
Barcelona from two NFL Europe fans who regularly read MYKwebWORLD
link pages}, Berlin winning the Twelfth
World Bowl, 30-24. New England QB Rohan
Davey, who has a good chance to
move up to number two with the Patriots this season
- if they decide not to bring back Damon Huard, who lead Frankfurt to the
'98 NFL E title game. Davey
needs to loose weight and may need to stick to a diet plan (I might soon
too!). But he played well
for Berlin this season getting new Coach Rcik Lantz his first
Championship. Berlin now 4-0 in NFL E Championships and Frankfurt is now 3-3.
German born WR/KS
Jorg (George) Heckenbach is now 3-0 in Championship rings, tying Herr Hippler."

Cream of flag football talent to compete in European School Final ahead of World
Bowl XII
YOUNG American football players from across the continent will compete for
the title of European champion when the Flag Football European School Final
takes place in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on Saturday June 12, just hours
before the Berlin Thunder and Frankfurt Galaxy meet in World Bowl XII.
Countries represented in the finals taking place in the Parkstadion from
10:00 a.m. CET are the Netherlands, Germany, England and Italy in Pool A,
and Austria, Spain, France and Finland in Pool B.
As well as competing to become the European champions in the non-contact
version of American football, the teams made up of 12 to 14-year-old boys
and girls will also be gunning to win a dream trip to Vancouver, Canada, to
take part in the NFL Flag Football World Championship, which takes place
from August 3-8.
The top three finishers in the Flag Football European School Final will
compete in Canada alongside teams from the home nation, China, Japan, Korea,
Mexico, Thailand and the USA.
The full lineup of schools competing in the Flag Football European School
Final is Viitaniemi (Finland), Gymnasium Wenzgasse (Austria), Eastbourne
Cardinals (England), Leonardo Da Vinci College (Netherlands), IES Pere Vives
Vich (Spain), Newton/Parma (Italy), AS Flag (France) and Meerbusch Gymnasium
Eagles (Germany).
IES Pere Vives Vich finished third in last year's competition and went on to
finish in a creditable fifth place in the 2003 NFL Flag Football World
Championship that took place in Tokyo, Japan.
The winners of this year's Flag Football European School Final will be
paraded before the 40,000 expected crowd for World Bowl XII at 5:45 p.m. CET
on Saturday afternoon.
NFL Europe Flag Football Manager BERND VON LAPP said: "It should be yet
another great day of flag football this weekend with boys and girls from all
across Europe competing for the crown of European champion and, most
importantly, having fun playing the sport of American football.
"Flag football is a safe and fun introduction to the sport of American
football and these youngsters competing on Saturday will have a wonderful
opportunity to go on and represent their continent in the world
championships in Canada. The successful teams from this tournament will
enjoy the trip of a lifetime to Vancouver and I am confident they will do
Europe proud.
"These flag football players could be the future stars of the NFL Europe
League so I would urge as many fans as possible to check out the action
ahead of World Bowl XII."
The championship game will take place at 3:00 p.m. CET on Saturday afternoon
and will be followed immediately by presentation of trophies and MVP awards.
Note to editors: Flag football is the NFL's core international grassroots
programme involving more than one million boys and girls ages 8 to 14. NFL
Flag Football helps children learn the basics of the sport of American
football and is played in more than 20 countries around the world,
including: Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, France,
Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand,
Scotland, Spain, Sweden, USA and Thailand.

THE
NFL Europe League national players selected to join NFL clubs as part of the NFL
International Development Practice Squad program have been given their team
assignments.
Four
players - three from Germany and one from Mexico - will spend the entire 2004
NFL season as members of their teams' practice squads. They will not be eligible
to be claimed by another team or promoted to an active roster.
The
players were selected earlier this week and the NFC West was drawn out as the
division to which they would be assigned. Team assignments are as follows:
-
Tackle
PETER HEYER (Germany, Rhein Fire) - St. Louis Rams
-
Safety
RICHARD YANCY (Germany, Rhein Fire) - San Francisco 49ers
-
Defensive
end CHRISTIAN MOHR (Germany, Berlin Thunder) - Seattle Seahawks
-
Tackle
ROLANDO CANTU (Mexico, Berlin Thunder) - Arizona Cardinals
NFL
Europe League Senior Director of Football Operations NICK POLK said: "This
program is a major step forward in our development of international players and
we are very excited about seeing how these players progress mentally and
physically during an intense few months with their NFL teams.
"This
is a fine group of young, talented players and the NFL teams, who have been very
supportive of this program, are looking forward to welcoming them to their camps
later this summer."
Yancy,
who has played for the Fire for three years after two seasons with the Thunder,
will be joining one of the most famous franchises in American sport in the
49ers, winners of four Super Bowls.
Thunder
teammates Mohr and Cantu, who are currently preparing to face the Frankfurt
Galaxy in World Bowl XII in the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, will
be joining up-and-coming teams that have high hopes of competing for the NFC
West crown this season. The Seahawks reached the playoffs last season and have
one of the most exciting young teams in the league, while the Cardinals are
entering a new era under new head coach Dennis Green.
Heyer,
who spent the last NFL preseason with the New Orleans Saints, will join a Rams
club that won Super Bowl following the 1999 season and were narrowly beaten on
their return two years later.
Another
German-born offensive lineman, TOM NÜTTEN, played on both of those Rams teams
and has got to know Heyer well. Nütten, who has just completed a season as an
offensive assistant at the Cologne Centurions, said: "For Peter, as for all
of these guys, this is going to be a great opportunity to receive intensive
coaching. The most important thing for them will be the opportunity to work on
their technique and I would expect them all to come back to Europe as much
improved players."

McCoo picks up second Player of the Week prize; Japanese history-maker Namiki
rewarded
BERLIN Thunder running back ERIC McCOO (Philadelphia Eagles) has been named
NFL Europe Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in the final three
weeks of the regular season.
McCoo's award means nine of the 10 Offensive Player of the Week awards this
season have been won by members of the World Bowl-bound Berlin Thunder and
Frankfurt Galaxy.
In helping the Thunder to a 41-0 Week 10 defeat of the Galaxy, McCoo rushed
for 122 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries and added 6 receptions for
another 61 yards. With that performance, McCoo grabbed the NFLEL rushing
title with a season total of 669 yards and 4 touchdowns on 148 attempts. He
also led NFL Europe with 1,037 yards from scrimmage after adding 38 catches
for 368 yards and a touchdown.
McCoo previously won the award in Week 8. Other Berlin players to win the
offensive award were QB ROHAN DAVEY (Weeks 2, 3 and 5) and QB DAVID RIVERS
(Week 9). Frankfurt players to win the award were RB LEONARD HENRY (Week 1)
and RB SKIP HICKS (Weeks 4 and 7).
Defensive Player of the Week honors also headed Berlin's way as linebacker
BRENDEN GIVAN (Miami Dolphins) was rewarded for his record-breaking display
against Frankfurt last Sunday.
Givan recorded a team-high 4 tackles, forced 1 fumble and returned the loose
football a league record 98 yards to set up Berlin's final touchdown of a
one-sided game. He also added 2 special teams stops.
During the 2004 regular season, Givan led all defenders with 70 tackles and
added 1 sack, 3 forced fumbles, 1 interception, 11 special teams tackles and
5 pass defenses.
Cologne Centurions kicker DEREK SCHOREJS (Cleveland Browns) was named
Special Teams Player of Week 10 after he landed field goals of 50 and 34
yards during his team's 28-20 defeat of the Scottish Claymores. The 50-yard
effort was worth four points under NFLEL rules.
Schorejs was the most accurate American kicker in NFL Europe this spring,
converting 6 of 7 field goals with a long of 51 yards for a total of 20
points.
Centurions Japanese quarterback KENTARO NAMIKI was named National Player of
the Week after he made NFL Europe League history during Cologne's Week 10
victory in Scotland.
In hitting German tight end WERNER HIPPLER for a 3-yard gain in the second
quarter, Namiki became the first national player in league history to
attempt and complete a pass. He went on to complete 5 of 6 passes for 38
yards while leading Cologne on a scoring march that culminated in a field
goal.

Rivers rewarded for leading comeback victory; McCready wins award for record
fourth time
BERLIN Thunder backup quarterback DAVID RIVERS has been named NFL Europe
Offensive Player of Week 9 for his efforts in leading his team to a
come-from-behind victory against the Scottish Claymores.
Rivers entered the game with 3:04 remaining in the first half and with the
Thunder trailing the hometown Claymores 13-0. The former Amsterdam Admirals
(2003) quarterback promptly led Berlin on a 63-yard scoring march, which he
capped himself by finding the end zone on a 4-yard run.
By the end of the game, which Berlin won 27-19 to improve to a league-best
8-1 on the season, Rivers had completed 18 of 24 passes for 202 yards, 2
touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 127.4.
Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ said: "David Rivers did a good job for us
when
he came into the game. I wanted to give him extra playing time this week because
I feel we have true depth at the quarterback position."
Seeing limited playing time behind regular starter ROHAN DAVEY this season,
Rivers has completed 42 of 59 attempts for 403 yards, 4 touchdowns and no
interceptions for a QB rating of 112.5.
Defensive Player of the Week honors went to Frankfurt Galaxy linebacker
DUSTIN COHEN, who recorded a team-high 13 tackles during a 20-14 overtime
defeat of the Rhein Fire. The second-year free agent also added an interception
for 45 yards, knocked down a pass and forced a fumble.
Through nine games this season, Cohen ranks second on the Galaxy defense
with 50 tackles, 1 sack, 3 forced fumbles and 2 pass defenses. He has added
a team-leading 9 tackles on special teams.
Cologne Centurions wide receiver ALBERT JOHNSON (Houston Texans) was named
Special Teams Player of Week 9 after he returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown
against the Amsterdam Admirals.
Johnson - who also boasts NFL experience with the Miami Dolphins and New
York Jets - leads NFL Europe with 11 punt returns for 146 yards (13.3
average) and 1 touchdown. His season figures also include 11 catches for 122
yards and a touchdown, and 14 kickoff returns for 307 yards (21.9 average).
McCready - who became the first Brit to win a Super Bowl ring as a member of
the 2001 New England Patriots - was named National Player of the Week for
the fourth time this season, tying the record for most awards in a season
(Rhein Fire K MANFRED BURGSMÜLLER won four Player of the Week prizes in
1997).
The sure-handed, London-born wide receiver caught 11 passes for 52 yards
during the Claymores' loss to Berlin. McCready leads NFL Europe with 58
receptions for 466 yards and 1 touchdown this season and is bidding to become
the first national player in league history to lead a major statistical category
outside of kicking. He leads his nearest rivals (Rhein Fire receivers WILLIE
QUINNIE (Atlanta Falcons) and ADAM HERZING (San Francisco 49ers) by 12
receptions heading into the final week of the regular season.
McCready's other Player of the Week awards came in Weeks 1, 7 and 8.
McCready said: "It is nice to feel like you are contributing to the team as
a wide receiver but I would gladly trade some of those receptions for a few more
wins. This has been a frustrating season for us as a team but I have shown I can
stay healthy and make a lot of catches. That has been good for me in terms of
getting back into the NFL."

NFL
Europe Update: A neat
interview conducted by Murdoch's Fox Sports World Sun. on the Amsterdam
Cologne game as 41-year old Jack
Netter and this drum explained about all the
Admirals fans who drove down to Rhein Energie Stadion Sun from Holland to see
this Admirals
get by Werner Hippler and Albert Johnson III's Cologne Centurains, 23-18.
Hippler,
who had been the forgotten man in the Centurians 'O' this season scored
his first two Pro TDs since May
1995(!!!), one rushing and one on a 5 yard reception
in Cologne's narrow loss in their
last home game of the season. Hippler, Darren Bennett's
old buddy from the San Diego Chargers now has 83 career receptions (between
the XFL, NFL & NFL E) for 4 TDs. Hippler grew up in Canada but was born
to a German mother in Cologne in
30 July 1970. He attended Sacramento State where
he played in the backfield with longtime CFL'r, RB Troy Mills and longtime
Arena QB Aaron Garcia (no
relation).
He joined the Chargers in '94 as a free agent and spent the Chargers Super
Bowl season
on the practice squad with Darren Bennett, as a kick snapper. He went a
full camp with the Detroit (not
B.C.) Lions. He returned to the states to play
kick snapper and reserve TE
in the XFL with Las Vegas. He has also played seven seasons
for the Frankfurt Galaxy. He started a nine-team Canadian Football League
in Europe with teams in Germany,
Austria, France (Argonauts) and Switzerland.
Cologne MLB Cedric Cotar, from

was born to a french-canadian mother and grew up in La Belle Province,
Montreal, who I go on the radio

story was ex-Winnipeg Blue Bomber Johnson and
his long punt return for a TD. Johnson actually asked the Houston Texans to
send him to Europe. He was injured by ex-Calgary Stampeder Marc Boerigter
returning a punt for the Miami
Dolphins in '02. Canadian
QB David Priestly, allocated by the Seattle Seahawks, is the cousin of
Jason Priestly but sat out the
