Edmonton Oilers will be my new NHL team in 2014!

I'm moving to Edmonton in Sept for awhile so the Edmonton Oilers will be my new NHL team. I've always like the Oilers but they definitly need to improve, hopefully this year as I'm sure I will enjoy some nights in Edmonton sports bars watching the Oilers and having fun. As many of you know I'm a huge NFL, CFL and Aussie Rules Football guy and I like hockey but not a fanatic. I thus support the NHL team where I live, the Ottawa Senators have been my #1 team the past 4+ years and will still be my favourite NHL team in the East.

The only time that I didn't do this was the second time that I lived in Vancouver after moving back there from Calgary right at the time of the Todd Bertuzzi and Vancouver Canucks disgraceful pre meditated hit on Steven Moore of the Colorado Avalanche. I was really upset at that and also at the way that too many Canucks fans supported Bertuzzi and the Canucks coching staff. Thus I stuck with the Calgary Flames for those two years in 2004 and 2005. I will say though if I ever move to Toronto to live I will not be a Toronto Maple Leafs fan!" Myk Aussie

This is a great production from here in Ottawa. Liam Maguire who I know quite well made a couple of classic comments. "Both sides are like children. It's a school yard battle!" and then "The last time this happened Poker became a sport!" The Graham James sentencing came down today, two years for repeated sexual assaults on Theo Fleury and Todd Holt. Many Canadians were outraged on Twitter today for the leniency in the sentence. Theo retweeted many of the tweets that he received. I read Theo's book "Playing with Fire" about three years ago that included this topic. Was a great but very sad book. Liam was telling me about this interview when I met up with him at his bar 2 week ago. So I started reading about Alan Eagleson, very interesting. Alan is well known for providing the opportunity for professional players to compete in international hockey by promoting the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union. However he is a convicted felon in two countries, a former politician, a disbarred Canadian lawyer, hockey agent and promoter.

NHL All-Star weekend is here in Ottawa this weekend.

This is funny, good and bad. Washington Capitals Legend Alexander Ovechkin one of the top stars is not coming here. He says "As a suspended player I don't deserve to play in the NHL All-Star game!" Wow!

The bad, as one of the top stars I believe it is not good him not supporting the NHL All-Star weekend. With the millions of dollars that he makes it is a commitment he should be made to make. The younger NHL fans really like Alexander and so do I.

The Good, yeh he pisses off Gary Bettman the disliked NHL boss.

I know another reason why NHL Champ Ovechkin isn't "as keen" to come to Ottawa for the All-Star weekend! I can't say just yet! Ahhhh!

About 2 years ago Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo left the game during a period to go to the dunny. AKA Loo, toilet, washroom as they say in CDN. Apparently it was true he needed to have a leak and or drop the kids off at the pool (ie have a poo) If you are new to hockey, a game has 3 periods not 4 quarters.

The Chicago Blackhawks defeat the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime in game 6 to win The Stanley Cup, 4 games to 2!
I lived in Calgary for most of this years hockey season watching many of the Western teams thus I believe the best team did win The Stanley Cup. Patrick Kane the young Blackhawks star scored the winning goal in a very good Stanley Cup Final series. Oh Chris Pronger, damn he played well in defence for the Flyers. He is hated by the opposition and by many but what a great player he is. It was the 1st time the Blackhawks had won The Stanley Cup since 1961. Jonathan Toews the Blackhawks captain won the Conn Smythe trophy which is awarded to the MVP Most Valuable Player of the Playoffs.

Oh no the San Jose Sharks are tanking again in the playoffs. Sharks Dan Boyle's own goal wins game 3 for the Avalanche! You can see this crazy Dan Boyle own goal in the video above. Game 3 between the Colorado Avalanche who are the number 8 seed in the West vs the San Jose Sharks the number 1 seed in the West went to overtime on Sunday night after it was 0-0. Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson was incrediable with a home playoff record 51 saves. Evgani Nabokov the Sharks goalie saved 17 shots. Then in the 1st minute of overtime the craziness happened with Shark's Dan Boyle trying to find a fellow defenceman but instead the puck went past Evgani Nabokov and into the net. The Colorado crowd thus went wild while hockey fans watching on TV were amazed. Colorado are now up 2-1 in the series.

My Aussie mate Wrighty Kramer may be coming to the Stanley Cup playoffs! Some advice for Wrighty!
Wrighty Kramer is a huge NHL fan and he has been watching games recently on the internet in Australia. Last week I tried to give him some advise in regards to stadiums where he may be able to get playoff tickets all OK as the Stanley Cup final approaches.

"Hey Myk Aussie Harro. I'm thinking of coming over to watch some of the Stanley Cup playoffs. What is the general consensus re the average Joe blow getting a ticket to a playoff game?" Wrighty

"Wrighty Kramer, It depends on the city and it gets harder and more money the deeper into the playoffs. Phoenix, LA King, San Jose Sharks you would get a ticket online before the game starts all OK. Montreal, Vancouver and the more popular teams not as good a chance as the season ticket holders get them. You would pay lots more via a online ticket company in the more popular hockey playoff cities but you could still get them." Myk

"Hey those clubs you mentioned like San Jose, Phoenix etc is that because they are relatively newish franchisees and that hockey is still developing in those cities? while the East Coast is hockey mad because that’s where the sport was invented so to speak?" Wrighty

"Yeh thats pretty much right. Vancouver and Montreal would be the hardest and most expensive I believe. Pittsburg and Chicago are doing real well as well at the moment while most or all of the other stadiums will probably sellout by game time. You might even get to see your number 1 team the Avalanche in the 2nd round of the playoffs. I would suggest you go here to get your nhl tickets" Myk

Wow! What a great way for the Olympic games to finish. Canada winning Gold over the USA 3-2 in Overtime in the most important Olympic event for many Canadians. Congratulations to Team Canada.

I can't wait to listen to the Jim Rome show on the Fan 960 on Monday. It's going to be wild as Romey luvs getting the USA vs CDN listeners going against eachother. Yeh! Yeh! Yeh!

Oh no the USA scores in the last minute of the game to tie it at 2-2. The game is now going to Overtime.

From Sat Feb 27. It's USA vs Canada for the Men's Gold Medal! Canada defeats Slovakia 3-2 in one Semi Final! USA defeats Finland 6-1 in the other Semi Final!
Sunday 12 noon Pacific North American time the whole country, well lots and lots of Canada will be glued to the TV watching this Gold Medal game, well other than the lucky people at the game. This is going to be the biggest TV event ever in the history of Canadian Television. I'm tipping Canada to win if Roberto Luongo is good in goals for Canada. Ryan Miller in goals for the USA has been excellent. Canada should be better offensively than the USA. Go Canada!

Team Canada went up 3-0 in the Semi Final on Friday night against Slovakia but then in the dying moments Slovakia nearly scored to send the game to overtime. I'm not sure what happened to Finland against the USA in the other Semi Final especially Calgary Flames star goalie Miikka Kiprusoff as Miikka was "soft" as he let in 4 goals in the 1st period before being sent to the bench. Maybe Kippa was thinking about the upcoming summer and playing Gaelic Football here in Alberta. Refer to the link to the TV show above.

The Canadian Cwoc's Cool Women Of Canada defeat the USA Cwoa's Cool Women Of America 2-0 to win their 3rd straight Olympic Gold!
This was another highligt the Canadian Cwoc's winning their 3rd straight Gold Medal. Canada and the USA are way out in front of any other nation in Women's Hockey so hopefully some of the other countries improve as there is talk of Women's Hockey being taken out of the Olympic games because of these two coutries being way better than the others. It is believed seeing the 2014 Winter Olympics are being held in Russia that the Women's Hockey will stay in the games. I think a bit too much was made yesterday in the media of the Canadian Women's on ice celebration awhile after their win, drinking beer, champagne and smoking cigars that some of the media saw after the crowd had left the stadium.

From Wed Feb 24. Canada to play Russia tonight in one of the Quarter Finals. This game will feature the best two players in the World! Talking Olympic Hockey on 5AA South Australian radio! Canada defeats Germany 8-2!
On Tueday night Canada defeated Germany 8-2 in a game they didnt expect to be playing in. Tonight Canada will play Russia in one of the Quarter Finals. Many people thought this would have been the Gold Medal game so one of the favourite teams will be drowning their sorrows at 7.30pm Wednesday night Vancouver time. This game will feature the best two players in the World, Russian star Alex Ovechkin who plays for the NHL Washington Capitals and Canadian star Sidney Crosby who plays for the NHL Pittsburg Penguins. I can't wait for this game. I'll be really hoping Canada advances to the Semi Final. If they don't it will be a very sad day here on Thursday and beyond.

From Mon Feb 22. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey! Ooch, USA defeats Canada 5-3!
Canada had way more shots on goal but USA's Ryan Miller was way better than Canada's Martin Brodeur. Canada now has to play Germany and the winner advancing to play Russia in a Quarter Final. Russia vs Canada was a popular prediction for the Giold Medal game.

From Thurs Feb 18. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey! Wow, Canada defeats Switzerland 3-2 in a shootout with a Sidney Crosby goal!
Ooch, Team Canada has a scare as they go up 2-0 but then the Swiss play well to tie it up at 2-2. The game then goes to overtime and still at 2-2 at the end of overtime thus the game goes to a shootout. Sidney Crosby scores on the 4 attempt by a Canadian in the shootout and then Martin Brodeur the Canadian goalie saves the 4th shot by the Swiss. It was a nervous but much needed win but Team Canada. They get 2 points instead of 3.

From Tues Feb 16. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey, Canada defeats Norway 8-0 in their 1st game! Jarome Iginla gets a hat-trick and the hats were flying onto the arena! The USA defeat Switzerland 3-1! Next up for Canada is Switzerland then the USA!
After the 1st period it was 0-0 but then the star studded Canadian team got into high gear and smashed the Norway team 8-0. Calgary Flame Legend Captain Jarome Iginla got the hat-trick and straight away the Canadian fans started throwing many $30+ hats onto the arena. Great stuff. On Thursday night Canada plays Switzerland who were defeated today by the USA 3-1 and then on Sunday Canada plays the USA. Wow, now that's going to be a fun day of watching Olympic Hockey.
