BC
Lions training camp report from Lions Fan in the Queue "Well I just
got back Monday night from training camp in Kamloops. Had a great time with many
people from Lionbackers.com and got our Tailgate training camp underway. As for
how the team looked ....
I
like our revamped oline - we got some big bodies out there that seem able to
move. Protection is key for DD. Big Andrew Carter (all 6'9")
seems to be the only one on the bubble at this point. Olester Pope looks
big and SOLID. Fred Moore is gonna be pushing for a spot as well. Carl
Gourgues looks good but will probably be relegated to backup unless he can
unseat Bates, however he seems to be the backup centre in camp.
DLine:
While not much in the way of names on the ends, a "quick" talk
with James Parker (guest coach) and he says he is quite impressed with the
athleticism of the new guys brought in and doesn't anticipate any problems.
He did say it was going to be a tough decision on who to cut. Caught
James giving the young guys a few lessons in trench warfare.
Qb's:
Dave looked much better out there than I had originally thought he would.
His mobility is there and he seesm to be taking things slowly - testing it
here and there but not overdoing. Did see him on ice during sunday's
afternoon practice but he aswsured us it was just part of the rehab process -
work it, ice it, work it, ice it, etc. As for who is going to be #2 - good
question. We have a real serious battle shaping up here. The new guy
Caramazzi looked sharp for the first 2 days of camp and IMHO is really pushing
Wynn and Printers, heck he even looked better than them. The only concern
with Caramazzi is that on Monday morning you could smell the tiger balm being
applied to his arm from the sidelines. However he had been in camp a lot
longer than the others.
Receivers:
Good luck cracking the vets here. Clermont is looking dangerous and
big - I feel sorry for any DB's trying to cover him this year. Brazzell
was trying to show some stuff and Geroy is looking solid again. Thelwell
is looking good but not sure about his confidence. Paris Jackson is coming
into camp with something to prove and could be pushing Thelwell. But with
Buono stating he wants to go to a one back set that opens it up for 5 receivers.
Cutolo is also showing his solid self early. Guys to look for #11
Harris - good runs and catching, #77 Maeko - big guy with some speed.
RB's:
I was questioning Wally's decision to let Anderson go but I can now see why
Warren was picked up instead. The guy is smooth out there, he can squeeze
throw some holes and also isn't afraid to get his nose dirty. Running with
some authority out there. Nohra and Green getting the reps and easily beat
Warren in the blocking schemes. Expect them there to do the power game or
in 2nd and long situations. Guy to watch: #27 Linscomb - another
smooth runner much the same as Warren. He is certainly making the most of
the camp and turning some heads. Had some great runs in a minor scrimmage.
LB's:
Solid solid solid. No concerns - unless you are the opposing team. The
Lions should be even harder to run against this year and Barrin Simpson seems
even more driven this year. CArl Kidd love him or hate him - but he
certainly looks focussed. Floyd was playing the OLB vacated by the release
of Ockimey and could be some extra speed that went missing when Ayanbadejo left
for the NFL.
DB's:
Where the lines are so deep at receiver the opposite can be said for the
DB's. This area still has me scared since the departure of Eric Carter and
I didn't see anyone in his spot filling the shoes to make me optimistic. Some
comments from Shad Criss after practice were all "me me me" and not
much "team team team" which I thought spoke volumes to his focus - as
it was decidedly different from most of the players. He made a comment to
the affect that if th eLions cut him it wouldn't be a big deal because every
other CFL team would pick him and give him a big signing bonus anyhow and that
he is only in this league because his "red list is too long".
Special
Teams: basically the battle of the kickers. Holmes or Omahony.
Well in the bit of practice I saw OMahony was clearly the better punter.
However, Holmes was clearly the better field goal kicker. They even
had Bret Anderson (SB) kicking a few field goals with the other kickers as well.
This is another area of extreme concern for me and should be interesting
to watch come June 5th.
Well
that's it for my report from the first weekend of camp. Take from it what
you will - keeping in mind it was only the first weekend, 3 complete practices I
watched." Lions Fan in

May 6 04 "Ray Jacobs in BIG trouble! from Hambone Total-CFLer!" Myk
RCMP had a big
bust on a well known Whalley crackhouse last night. BCTV News this morning is
reporting that Lions' DE Ray Jacobs was arrested in the vicinity of the house
with a quantity of cocaine in his car. The club reportedly has issued a brief
statement saying it "does not condone any activity by its players that is
considered allegedly illegal."
"Well, here we
go again. The reports indicate he was in a car with three hookers and cocaine
was found in the vehicle. Now we all know he's innocent until proven guilty.
With 4 people in the car, I can believe that the drugs may not necessarily
have been his. However, at the very least I have to question his choice of
friends. It is a more than suspicious circumstance. He isn't Herman Smith's
roommate by any chance?" Blue In BC, Total-CFL Radio
"Unreal! Lions
pull of a great marketing campaign by having Wally on the 1/2 time City TV
Bachelor show (he was great) & then straight after the show they reported as
above re Ray Jacobs. Seems Lions can't win. I'm with Blue in BC a pro Lions
approach innocent until proven guilty! Will be talking about this tonight on
SportsRage and the new Total-CFL Radio show. Let's just hope many Pro Canucks
"Playoff losers" fans turn into Lions fans." EsksAreNo1 .
"Generally I'm a
believer in the "innocent until proven guilty" theory. In Herman Smith's case
it was something that happened in another jurisdiction in another country.
Can't remember what the final result was if he was totally absolved or had the
charges reduced to some misdemeanor. Given all that is legal in Nevada the
original charge seemed akin to being dinged for speeding in the pit lane at a
Super Speedway.
In the Jacob's
incident I think the Lions will be far less lenient. In this case we're
talking about a player being accused of being in possession of drugs near a
known crackhouse just before a major drug bust. To make matters worse the
location of the crackhouse in Whalley is literally in the shadows of the
Lions' training facility. Can't be more than 5 klicks away from the Lions'
complex. I suspect in this case the Lions will act much more quickly and
decisively and may only be waiting for the charges to be formalized. This one
is far too close to the Leos' home." Hambone
"Furthermore,
Jacobs had some alcohol/drug issues which resulted in his exit out of
Saskatchewan so he does have a bit of a history. The Lions gave him another
shot and this happens. I agree with Hambone that the Lions will be less
lenient with Jacobs than they were with Herman Smith." Ravi

no doubt continue about this great CFLer in the Press and on Total-CFL the
