Feb 26, 05 "Veteran Stars joined by 35 rookies as nationals are assigned to
teams! Moose's

Direct
from Neil Reynolds at NFL Europe. THE
NFL Europe League has assigned national players to teams ready for the official
opening of training camp in Tampa Bay, Florida.
A
total of 58 players were placed on the training camp rosters of the six NFLEL
teams after 78 players from 13 countries took part in a four-day mini-camp.
Back
for another season – for a new team, the Hamburg Sea Devils – is Englishman SCOTT
McCREADY. Last season he became the first national player to lead the NFLEL
in a major individual category when he caught 59 passes for the Scottish
Claymores.
Back
with the Berlin Thunder is defensive end CHRISTIAN
MOHR, who spent the NFL season on the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks
and has been allocated by that team for the 2005 season.
NFL
Europe Director of International Player Development TONY ALLEN said that the
decision process was harder than it has ever been. “These kids are good enough
that you could have made a case for giving each of them a spot on a roster. This
is the worst time of the year for me. I believe that every player we cut will be
invited back again and will remain as part of the program.”
Each
team will head for Europe for the 2005 season with eight nationals on its
roster. Players from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico,
Netherlands, Russia, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom – including 35
rookies – will be competing during training camp to earn those places.
Allen
continued: “I think we are going to be real excited to see how this group pans
out. There are a lot of opportunities for a lot of new kids this year. Even the
returning players are mostly only second or third year guys. We’ve never had a
harder working group of players and the coaches have done a great job.”
One
of the rookies is Allen’s own son, MARVIN ALLEN, who will be with the Frankfurt Galaxy. “I am excited
about my son making a team,” said Allen. “It is going to be fun watching
him, but tough not to root for the team he plays for!”
The
class of 2005 also includes two Russian players, Berlin safety SERGEY
IVANOV and Frankfurt receiver MAXIM
TREGUBOV. The eight Japanese players to make the cut include former sumo
wrestler MASAKAZU GODA, a center who
will play for the Cologne Centurions. Former England rugby union Under-20
international NEIL BAXTER is set to
compete at running back for Berlin.
Japanese
quarterback KENTARO NAMIKI, who last
year became the first national quarterback in league history to complete passes,
returns to Cologne. He is joined by tight end WERNER
HIPPLER, a nine-year NFLEL veteran and a three-time All-NFLEL selection.
The
Rhein Fire welcome back safety RICHARD YANCY and guard PETER
HEYER, who spent the 2004 NFL season on the practice squads of the San
Francisco 49ers and St Louis Rams respectively.

Ready
for more football? NFLEL preseason training camp begins in Tampa Bay
SUPER
BOWL XXXIX between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles may still
be fresh in the memory, but it’s already time for some more football.
More than 350 professional football players from all 32 NFL teams and more
than a dozen countries around the world descend on Tampa Bay, Florida, during
the month of March for NFL Europe League training camp as the Amsterdam
Admirals, Berlin Thunder, Cologne Centurions, Frankfurt Galaxy, Hamburg Sea
Devils and Rhein Fire begin serious preparations for NFL Europe’s 13th
season, which kicks off on Saturday April 2. Looking
to make a solid start to life in the NFL Europe League will be the newest
franchise, the Hamburg Sea Devils – who will be coached by league veteran
JACK BICKNELL.
As the RICK LANTZ-coached Berlin Thunder set out to defend their league title,
all six teams will practice daily in Florida and scrimmage against each other
before making final roster cuts ahead of the trip to Europe. Only
once those cuts have been made can the players begin dreaming of glory in the
Yello Strom World Bowl XIII, which will be held at the LTU Arena, Düsseldorf,
Germany, on Saturday June 11.

NFL
Europe (NFL 'AAA') 2005 Season Preview
OK
- see if you can follow the historical perspective I am putting forth
without getting lost; This League started in March of '91 as 'The
World League of American Football (underline 'WORLD' League). It
had teams in Montreal (Les Machine), Canada [remember CFL fans, no
Alouettes then since '87], Three in Europe; London, Barcelona and
Frankfurt and six in the U.S. In Sept. '92, after changing the name
to 'World League of Football [no longer 'AMERICAN'], the Board
of NFL Governors (read NFL Owners!) voted to can this experiment,
for at least a couple years, and
bring it back in the future, as an all-European
'AAA' developmental League, which
the NFL did, in '95 as just the 'World
League' - six teams in Amsterdam,
London, Scotland, Frankfurt, Rhein and
Barcelona. In Oct. '97, the
Monarchs changed their name from London to
'England' and got new white
uniforms. In Spring '98, the NFL changed this
League's name again to the
better-sounding "NFL Europe".
In
Oct. '98 the England
Monarchs moved to Berlin and became the Thunder, recycling the
name of a former U.S. franchise.
In Oct. '03 the Barcelona team was moved
to Cologne [not aftershave!],
Germany to give the four largest cities
in Deutschland, NFL 'AAA' teams. Then last Oct. '04, Scotland moved to Hamburg,
swords and all, to give Germany's
five largest cities NFL 'AAA' teams.
Now is the next move to
change the name a fourth time to "NFL 'AAA' Dutch and
Deutsch"? Or will the
Admirals move in '06 and become the Essen Beer Barons?
This
is getting dizzying! Still with me? The NFL 'AAA's kick off their
13th (and last?!) season
with one Dutch team and five German ones (will anyone in
the U.S. CARE?) and this
money loser has been costing the $2 Bil-a-year American
Football giant $20-$25 Mil. in
loses for 13 years. When is a good time
to pull the plug? Scotland
had averaged around 9-to-11,000 fans per game for 10
seasons. Barcelona averaged about
6,000 before becoming the Cologne Centurians
last year (Cologne averaged about 9,200 per contest) and London
was down to 5,300 per game when
they moved to Germany in Oct. '98.
Is
this League still relevant? Depends on how you look at it. Below could
be this Sports writer's last NFL
Europe Preview. I've done them for ne
source of another the last 12
years. I am losing more and more interest
in this once decent fourth tier
Pro Footie League. The CFL and Arena Leagues
are way better. Good luck Werner Hippler, Marco Martos & Company.
And I hope 'Cowboy Jack Bicknell' can win one more Euro Bowl.
As Doug Flutie's college Coach, he deserves to go out with this
League as it's all-time leading
game winning Coach. Auf Wiedersehen!:
Amsterdam
Admirals, 13th season. Overall Franchise record: 60-62. Two
NFL E Bowl appearances, two losses. Coach: Jack Bicknell, the last
of the original Coaches from the 1991 WLAF configuration, career
record: 65 wins, 60 losses, the all-time winningest Coach in NFL
E history. National players going to camp with Amsterdam: Two former
Af2 Hawai'i Islanders, Kohei Satomi (DB) & Rikya Ishida (DE/LB),
Concention Shurendy (LB), Antonio
Rodriguez (LB), Aden Durde (LB) &
Brit RB Warren Keen. Most of the National players are former Scotland
Claymores and LB Masa Kawaguchi,
who spent last NFL season on the an
Francisco 48ers practice squad, has retired for good from Pro Football.
He
started eight seasons at MLB for the Admirals and will be the first
Amsterdam player to have his
number retired. I predict a World Bowl victory
for the Admirals, as they are the last Non-German NFL E team and
are overdue. They lost the NFL E Bowl in '92 as the Montreal Machine
and in '95 at home in Amsterdam even with a League leading 9-1-0
mark and with the best punter in NFL E (& NFL?!) history, Darren
Bennett on board. Bennett lost two
Pro Football Championships in a row
in six months time that year as his San Diego Chargers also lost Super
Bowl XXIX to San Francisco. Predicted finish: World Bowl winners.
Berlin
Thunder, 13th season. Overall Franchise record: 60-63-1. Four NFL
E Bowl appearances, four wins (Three as Berlin Thunder, one
as London Monarchs). Coach: Rick Lantz (career mark: 9-2-0). National
Players returning: Norb Baumberger (OL), Heinz Quast (K), RB
Patrice Cancel, Astr SchneiDer (no realation to the Orlando backup
QB in the Ar.FL) [LB], Mexican OLm Rolando Cantu, who spent
last NFL season on the Saint Louis Rams practice squad, Finnish
TE Klaus Alinen and Austrian DLm
Denny Englebrcht. The Berlin Thunder
/London (England) Monarchs are the most successful franchise in NFL E
history, now 4-0 in NFL Championship games. They won't quite make it
that far this year. History has dictated that every year but one, the
year after they make the Championship game they miss the World Bowl
the next year. That one time lightning struck twice. I don't see
it happening again. They also don't get Rohan Davey back at pivot.
This year's crop of NFL allocated QBs don't exactly inspire any
NFL E fans. Berlin suffered a huge
loss in the off season when both Klex Kruse and longtime NFL E stand out WR/KS
Jorg (Baywatch) Heckenbach,
a late cut from the Cleveland Browns (lucky guy!) retired
with 67 catches in eight NFL E
seasons for 800 yards and 8 TDs. Kruse
also lead NFL E in scoring
last season. I don't see them being that easy to
replace. Predicted finish:
fifth.
Cologne
Centurians, 13th season. Overall Franchise record: 66-59-0. Five
NFL E Bowl appearances, two wins (All as Barcelona Dragons). Coach:
Pete Vaas (career mark: 25-27-0). Predicted finish: second place,
berth in World Bowl. National players returning: The best of all-time
in the NFL E's, TE/KS Werner Hippler, former San Diego Charger / Las Vegas
Outlaw (XFL) & seven year, three time Frankfurt Galaxy
Champion, WR Marto Marcos, QB Kentaro Namiki, WRs YuNakajima, Michiro Ogawa, LB
Cedric Cotar, DB Tadani Sano and S German
Marian Pusch. The former Barcelona Dragons finished the season
a year ago as the hottest team down the stretch in the NFL
'AAA's, winning three of their last four games, that DIDN'T make
the Championship. They rediscovered TE Hippler, who put off
retirement to become Cologne's General Manager, who was big in
the last two games and scored his first two Tds since his rookie season
back with Frankfurt in 1995! It's doubtful that they'll get KR/WR
Al Johnson III back, the former CFL Winnipeg Rookie of the year
in '01, the year Winnipeg made their last Grey Cup. He would be
a huge stabilizing factor, since most of these teams have to come together
in four weeks of training camp in Orlando every spring right
before leaving for Europe to play their games. Only longtime Nationals
like Hippler, who played three years at Sacramento State in
the U.S., comeback nearly every year (except when that "XFL", one
hit wonder experiment came along - and he played there, too).
If
Colgne can get one it it's two U.S QBs back - say Ryan Van Dyke, if
he doesn't make the Los Angeles Avengers of the Ar.FL, they will contend.
They have an excellent Coaching staff and outstanding Stadium
to play in. Look for them to
bullyup on 'new' oldcomers, Scotland, er,
ah, Hamburg and make
hamburg-ERS of the Sealegs!
Frankfurt Galaxy, 13th season, only original WLAF club in same city.
Overall record: 64-61-1. Six NFL E
Bowl appearances, three wins, three
losses. Coach: Mike Jones (career mark: 7-4-0). Predicted
finish: fourth place. National
Players returning: OLm Jens Pettersson
and Andre Mathes, Canadian DB
Lenny Greene, LBs Dusty Pearce and Cuneyt
Topcu, WR Hugo Lira and RB Marti Latka. Frankfurt has been to
more World Bowls than any team in this League EVER has and is
the only '91 WLAF team still in it's original home. They are the all-time
leaders in attendance and have boasted some of the best Coaches
this League has ever produced: Jack Elway, Dick Curl and Ernie
Stautner, the only German born NFL Hall of Famer. Mike Jones is
one of the most experienced Offensive minds in this League and will
be an NFL Ast. Coach on Offensive any day now. He bides his time
in the NFL 'AAA's. He will not get to the NFL E Bowl this year. Losing
K Ralf (Mr. Automatic) Kleimann, the all-time leading scorer in
this League's history is just too much to replace in one year. Plus,
after winning their last World
Bowl in Scotland, in June '03, they lost
all-time great KS/TE Werner Hippler to Cologne. Most NFL shortimer
TEs can't replace guys like that
quickly.
Rhein
Fire, 11th season, returning back to Dusseldorf after two seasons
in Gelsenkirchen. Overall record: 58-47-0. Six NFL E Bowl appearances,
two wins, four losses, both in Dusseldorf. Two wins, both
in Gelsenkirchen. Coach: Pete Kuharchek (career mark: 22-20-0). Predicted
finish: third place. National Players returning: K Ingo
Anderbrugge, KR/WR Chris Liess, RB
Marceline Laurent, S Rich Yancy (who
spent last NFL season on the Dolphins practice squad), LB Rich (great
name!) Adjei and three OLm; Mike Jonsson, Pete Heyer (who spent
last NFL season on the New Orlean Saints practice squad) and Thom
Reiser, from Switzerland. The Rhein Fire in this decade (or even
century) have been bridesmaids but
not brides. Bring back Danny Wuerffel?!
Hardy.
The Fire had a pretty good QB last year in current Chicago
Bear and former under appreciated
Cowboy, Chad Hutchinson. Parcells probably
released him too soon. There is a one-in-six chance that NFL
hungry Akili Smith could land
here. But the probability is that he will
go to one of the newer teams like
Cologne or Hamburg. Rhein got into
another World Bowl last year, but their undoing was there lack of
depth. Unless a good buch of Americans or Canadians get here to
help them this go-around, like Monica Jensen-Stevenson said in her
book out the U.S. P.OW.s left in
Vietnam, "Kiss The Boys Goodbye." Predicted
order of finish: Third place.
Hamburg
Swords, or Sealegs or whatever they now are, 11th season. Overall
record: 44-58-0. Two NFL E Bowl appearances, One win, one loss,
both as Scotland Scottish Claymores. Coach: Bart Andrus (career
mark: 17-23-0). National players going to camp with Swords: DE
Chris Mohr (no, not the punter / holder and third string QB from the
Montreal Machine of yesteryear, who's now with the Atlanta Fal- cons),
DE/LB Foad Ajdir, DE Rob Flickinger, WR Alejandro Gamez, RB Sandino
Octobre and WR Carlos Rosado. I don't look for too much from
the recycled Claymores and am still at a loss as to why the NFL
didn't do a better job promoting the game in the English-speaking
U.K. Yes, they will still have
youth Footy there and have the flag football
teams, which will later feed Team Europe, which competes in
the Global Junior Footy tournies at the Super Bowls each year, but
why does Deutchland deserve five
of the six NFL 'AAA' teams? It doesn't
make any sense. Unless this team gets a good NFL E vet QB
or the newly rededicated Akili Smith, I think one win would be something
of an accomplishment. Poor Coach Bart Andrus. Predicted
finish: 6th place, no World Bowl appearance.
Predicted
order of Finish:
1)
Amsterdam, League Champions
2) Cologne, sorry Werner Hippler, no more rings...
3) Rhein
4) Frankfurt
5) Berlin
6) Hamburg (bah! Hamburg!...)" Moose
