Tues
Mar 22, 05 "NFLE Teams conclude busy day of roster moves!" Myk Aussie
Direct
from David Tossell at NFLE Media.
NFL
Europe teams continued to be busy on the day after the final scrimmages of
training camp in Tampa Bay, Florida.
Following
the initial post-camp cuts, there was a hectic period of transactions as rosters
moved closer to those that will feature on opening day of the 2005 season, which
is now less than two weeks away on April 2.
One
part of the day’s business was to determine the players who are travelling to
Europe as part of the NFLEL Practice Squad. These 12 players will be inactive,
but can be re-assigned to another team and activated by the league office in
case of injuries. Prior to season kickoff, teams will determine with the NFLEL
office which two players on their active rosters are to be designated as NFLEL
Active players, meaning they, too, can be reassigned if required.

Mar 19, 05 "Last Action Heroes NFLEL teams complete camp with final
scrimages!" Myk Aussie
From David Tossell
NFLE2005 - camp notes 15
NFL
Europe League teams took their last shots and threw the final passes of training
camp in Tampa Bay, Florida, with a series of game condition scrimmages at the
University of Tampa.
Coaching
staffs departed quickly at the conclusion of the action to study film and decide
which 48 of their players will be flying with the teams to Europe this week for
the kickoff of the season on April 2. Details of those roster moves will be
announced later this weekend.
Here
is what happened on the field:
Amsterdam
Admirals vs Rhein Fire
Cologne
quarterback Chris Lewis (Arizona Cardinals) connected on 5 of 6 passes for 55
yards, including a 19-yard touchdown to C.J. Jones (Cleveland Browns). Kevin
Thompson (Buffalo Bills) was 3 of 5 for 34 yards, while Casey Clausen (Kansas
City Chiefs) completed all 3 of his passes for 21 yards and Japanese passer
Kentaro Namiki completed 3 of 5 passes for 20 yards.
Dwone
Hicks (Chicago Bears) was the Centurions’ top rusher with 19 yards on 4
carries, with the receptions spread around among 11 different Cologne players.
Carl Morris (San Diego Chargers) had 2 catches for 22 yards.
Amsterdam
quarterback Kurt Kittner (Chicago Bears) completed 6 of 9 passes for 58 yards,
including a 1-yard touchdown to French tight end Yoan Schnee. Running back
Jonathan Smith had a 34-yard gain among his 4 carries for 38 yards, while Ruvell
Martin (San Diego Chargers) was the team’s top receiver with 2 catches for 15
yards. Kicker Chris Snyder (Houston Texans) landed his two field goal attempts,
from 51 and 35 yards. Cologne linebacker Greg White (Chicago Bears) had a pair
of sacks.
From
the quotebook
“It
has been real good camp. These guys have a real desire to do what we are asking
them to do. We have been slower in some areas and faster in others but we will
continue to improve things and take the next step forward. We have come out
fairly healthy and I feel pretty good about where we are at right now.” –
Amsterdam head coach Bart Andrus
“Like
every training camp, you have your ups and your downs and you have your
difficulties that you have to overcome. I certainly think it was a strange
year in that we were hurt in our offensive line quite a bit. That causes
you to have to be patient in the way the offense makes progress. I like
what I've seen. I think our offensive line is starting to gel and provided we
can stay healthy everything will work out positively." – Cologne head
coach Peter Vaas.
Berlin
Thunder vs Rhein Fire
Berlin
passer Brett Engemann (Oakland Raiders) completed 5 of 5 passes for 35 yards
after the Fire defense, which posted 4 sacks during the scrimmage, had held Dave
Ragone (Houston Texans) to 2 of 6 for 14 yards. Running back Little John Flowers
(New York Jets) rushed 4 times for 16 yards, with Finnish tight end Klaus Alinen
the most productive receiver with 3 catches for 26 yards.
Scott
McBrien (Green Bay Packers) completed 4 of 7 passes for 38 yards for the Fire.
Andy Hall (Philadelphia Eagles) hit Cedric Bonner (Oakland Raiders) for the
longest completion of the day, 46 yards, with Jason Fife (Minnesota Vikings)
hitting on 4 of 7 passes for 54 yards. Glenn Martinez (Detroit Lions) caught 3
passes for 63 yards and running back Joe Smith (Tennessee Titans) gained 18
yards on 2 carries. Fire kicker Nicholas Setta (Chicago Bears) was 3 of 3 on
field goals, from 43, 30 and 28 yards.
From
the quotebook
“I
was pleased today with the way the team played. Our guys stuck together and
played hard. The offense moved the ball even though we couldn't get it in the
end zone. We kicked three field goals and the defense played pretty darn well.
We have to regroup here and prepare ourselves for the season." – Rhein
head coach Pete Kuharchek
“The
defense had to step up today, which they did except for about three plays. We
had the opportunity to get the football and we didn't get it, and when the
offense is having problems you have to be able to take away the football. We
have the capability to do that, and we were in the game the entire time."
– Berlin head coach Rick Lantz
Frankfurt
Galaxy vs Hamburg Sea Devils
Hamburg
quarterback Casey Bramlet (Cincinnati Bengals) completed 4 of 5 passes for 28
yards, and Ryan Dinwiddie (Chicago Bears) connected on 7 of 11 passes for 80
yards, including a 1-yard touchdown throw to Rod Perry (St Louis Rams). Larry
Croom (Arizona Cardinals) rushed twice for 20 yards, with Scott McCready
catching 3 passes for 36 yards and Carlos Perez (Philadelphia Eagles) 3 for 25.
Galaxy
quarterback Akili Smith (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) completed 4 of 7 passes for 70
yards, while running back Jamar Julien (Oakland Raiders) gained 20 yards on 3
attempts. The ball was spread around among seven receivers, with the 26-yard
catch by Chris Vance (New Orleans Saints) being his team’s longest of the day.
From
the quotebook
“I
think we did all right, but we’ve still got a long way to go. We’ve
definitely got a couple of kinks to work out, but I think as a defense we’re
starting to gel a little more, and everyone’s settling into their roles.
With time, if we keep focusing on getting better, we’ll get to where we want
to be.” – Frankfurt linebacker Kellen Brantley
“The
whole point of these scimmages is to get better between the first one and the
last one. We still have some business we need to take of, which are mainly
mental things. We need to take care of everything over the next two weeks but I
thiink we have definitely moved foward” – Hamburg running back Larry Croom.

Mar 5, 05 "NFL
kickers and punters join teams after three-day camp!
Moose's
extensive excellent NFL Europe Previews below Jan 8 column!" Myk Aussie
NFLE2005
- camp notes 8 from Neil Reynolds at NFL Europe
KICKERS
and punters battling for spots on NFL Europe League rosters have been assigned
to teams following a three-day mini-camp in Tampa Bay, Florida. Eight
kickers and eight punters will join their teams today (Friday), hoping to follow
in the footsteps of ADAM VINATIERI (Amsterdam 1996) and DAVID AKERS (Berlin
1999), who graduated from the NFLEL to being Pro Bowl kickers. Two ex-NFLEL
punters have also been afforded that honor.
The
group includes young players looking for their first opportunity in the NFL,
along with more experienced players like Buffalo Bills kicker OWEN POCHMAN, who
will play for the Frankfurt Galaxy after scoring 33 points for the San Francisco
49ers in 2003. Rhein
Fire punter TRAVIS DORSCH, allocated by the Minnesota Vikings, has spent two
seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals – and has family in the region of Germany
where he will be stationed for the upcoming season.
NFLEL
special teams guru JEFF REINEBOLD oversaw the kicking camp and declared: “This
is the best group of kickers and punters I have seen since I came into the
league in 1995. “The
encouraging thing is the number of NFL special teams coaches who have been down
here at practice. More than 12 teams sent their special teams coordinator down
here to evaluate these players. That means that there is definitely some talent
down here. “The
tough part has been making the decision on what players to keep. There are
certainly more than 12 players here who deserve the opportunity to kick in NFL
Europe, so it has been a very difficult selection process.”
Assignment
of NFL kickers and punters:
AMSTERDAM:
Stephen Scaldaferri (K, Indianapolis); Chris Snyder (K, Houston); Ryan Dutton
(P, Seattle).
BERLIN:
Kevin Miller (K, Seattle); Steve Baker (P, Oakland)
COLOGNE:
David Kibble (K, NY Giants); Chace Long (K, San Francisco); Cody Scates
(P, Houston); Eddie Johnson (P, NY Giants)
FRANKFURT:
Owen Pochman (K, Buffalo); Mike Barr (P, Pittsburgh)
HAMBURG:
Todd France (K, Tampa Bay); B.J. Sander (P, Green Bay); Brian Simnjanovski (P,
Tampa Bay).
RHEIN:
Nicholas Setta (K, Chicago); Travis Dorsch (P, Minnesota)
