"My analysis of
the Quincy Carter signing - it has nothing to do with Ricky Ray - it's a
       one-yr stopgap deal!" Moose
        Let's
live in a world of reality for a minute. There's only one reason the Jet's signed Quincy Carter, really. To block Division rival Buffalo
from signing him. As Cookie Gilchrist told me the other night, Buffalo and the Jets have hated each other since the AFL days of the 1960's.
        Buffalo
won the 1964 & '65 AFL Championships. The New York Jets won Super Bowl III. The Bills drafted O.J. Simpson, the Jets drafted John
Riggins. They both rushed for 11,000+ yards. Ad Infinatim. Oh, yea. I started talking about Ray!
        Ricky
Ray has all but clinched the backup job to Chad Pennington with his 7 of 8 passing performance over the hapless Colts the other night.
QB Coach Dick Curl said the other day that Ray is already better than his three starting QBs in the NFL 'AAA's in Europe, when they were there
('98-'00): Mr(s) Jake Delhomme, Pat Barnes and Ted White. Curl should know. In three NFL E seasons he went to two NFL E Bowls, winning once
alternating Delhomme and Barnes (who's uncle Joe won the Grey Cup for Toronto in '83) and losing one while alternating White and Barnes [Barnes
also went to an XFL Bowl Last in '01 with Paopao's Frisco team that got creamed by L.A. with Milanovich, Crafts, Prefontaine, Beaton & Bobby
       Singhon it].
 Offencive
Coordinator Paul [West Coast] Hackett is getting sick of Pennington and #4 Brooks Bolllinger getting hurt all the time. He is as good
as gone , along with one-yr man Carter, when they are both free agents
next Feb. Let's take Buffalo, who looks to be headed to another 8-8-0 season.
They loast top draft pick J.P. Losman, from Tulane, who outgunned Shawn Withy-Allen and Hawai'i in the Dec 25th, '02 Bowl game in which both QBs
threw 2 fourth quarter TDs, in Hawai'i's 36-28 loss, maybe for the year with a broken leg.
        The
only other healthy QB Buffalo has is #3 Travis Brown. Longtime reserve pivot Alex Van Pelt retired in Feb after 12 NFL seasons. The Bills leaked
they wanted Carter and then - Boom -after Ray has his best game of the
season, the Jets sign Carter. Well, with Bollinger hurt -again, they could
use a number three pivot and since Dallas is being held in arbitration to pay
most of Carter's salary, since they cut him after June 1st, the price is
       right!
        Ricky
won't be back in the CFL in this lifetime. Sorry, Esks and CFL
       fans!" Moose Wed,

NFL Report. Oh no he's into Peyton Manning again
"Monday night's NFL Preseason game between the Indianapolis Colts
       and the New York
Jets was almost a game long CFL-a-thon. Joe Thiesmann (Toronto
'71-'73) in the booth, Mike Vanderjagt (Sask. '93;Toronto '96-'97), Ricky
Ray (Edmonton '02-'03) and Jets OE Matt Dominguez, making up the main
portion of the tableau. Oh, by the way, the Jets creamed the Colts, 31-7
with their QB contingent of Chad Pennington/Ray/Chris Finlan clobbering
Peyton Manning (who's lone TD of the game, +Vanderjagt's convert saving
the Colts from a shut out)/Cory Sauter/Jim Sorgi. On the Colts first
drive of the game Manning picked up where he
left off last season with Co-MVP honors, completing 5 of his first 7
       passes but throwing a
boneheaded interception into triple coverage into
       the end zone.
 Manning
completed one of his next three passes, for a 1 yd TD after a
successful on-side kick by ex-RoughRider/Argonaut Vanderjagt, to bring
the Colts to within one point, trailing only 8-7 near the end of the
first quarter. But in the meantime, Pennington completed his first
10 passes for 2 TDs and
just missed a third with his only incomplete of the
game before yielding to ex-Eskimos star, Ray. Ray threw only one bad
pass, an Interception in the third quarter, when a receiver 'zigged'
       instead of 'zagged'. It
didn't matter, because by then Third Indy QB Sorgi
came into the game and the Colts were down 21-7. Ray
lead the Jets to scores on four of the five drives before yielding way
       to Chris Finlan in the
fourth quarter. No more Mike Patrick in the booth with
Thiesmann and Paul McGuire, I never did hear why. But as the game progressed,
the three, also joined by ancient Pat Summerall, who was with Fox
and CBS, did 21 years with John Madden in the booth, talked more and
       more about the CFL. Theismann
complimented Ricky's quick decision making and McGuire, a teammate
of both Jack Kemp (Calgary '59) and Cookie Gilchrist on the '64 AFL
Bufflao BIlls Champs team, asked how many Grey Cups Joe 'Teesman' [the
original pronunciation of Joe's name] had won.
Thiesmann admitted that he played in the '71 Grey Cup, as a Toronto
       rookie, but didn't win
it. He said it was an unbelievable experience. The ESPN crew showed
a graph on the screen with
the names of some well known CFL QBs who had
played in the NFL over the years: Jack Jacobs, Sam Echeverry, Joe Kapp,
Joe Thiesmann, Joe Pisarcik, Dieter Brock, Warren Moon, Doug Flutie,
       Trent Green and Jeff
Garcia. Kapp and Thiesmann have also played in Super Bowls,
with Thiesmann winning one in two attempts. Thiesmann was originally
       drafted in the fourth round
by Miami and signed instead with Toronto. He would
have been the 3rd pivot on the Miami Dolphins greatest ever 17-0-0
       '72 team.

They won the Super Bowl over Washington, the team Thiesmann signed
with in '74. Thiesmann was fifth in '74 in the NFC in PUNT RETURNS
       while he waited for Sonny
and Billy to either die off or retire so he could take
       over. Ironically enough,
before this Pre-Season game came on, Ace Ventura, Private
Eye was on 'another network', as they say, and the theme of the movie
was Miami playing San Francisco in Super Bowl XVII (actually that was
       the 57 day strike shortened
season Super Bowl won by Thiesmann when John
Riggins broke the 4th down run for the famous TD. Washington's opponent
that day; Miami, of course. Washington also beat Miami last night,
       17-0 in their Pre-Season
game. The Dolphins yesterday also released former Arena
League star, Oronde Gadsden, who played 7 seasons for them, at WR.
       In Ace Ventura, played by
goffy Canadian comic Jim Carrey, the main antagonist is disgruntled
former kicker, Ray Finkle, who kidnaps both Miami's mascot
       and QB Dan Marino before
       Super Bowl XXX." Moose

        As
Jerry Nuffy said last week the CFL Edmonton Eskimos are chasing the now
former Dallas Cowboys QB Quincy Carter. This is my take on the story that
got me cut off last night on Mark Stephen's QR77 Sportstalk. Don't know
why Mark cut me off as it is a fact that Quincy failed a 2nd NFL drug

        NFL
Update - NFL Team Previews A-'Comin' By:
Moose and Scott T. Baxter 2004
NFL Class of Canton, Oh. Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductees: 1)
Big John Elway, QB, Denver, all 16 seasons. Simply put, the greatest QB
       in the history
of the Universe. Holds almost all major Pro QBing records. Spent his
       entire playing
career with Broncos. Only QB to leads his team to five Super Bowls
       (in 11 years,
yet not!). Won more games than any QB in Pro Football history (all
       Leagues). Won
more fourth quarter comebacks (that is to say with his team behind
       entering the
fourth quarter) than any QB in Pro Football history. Won more playoff
       games than
any QB in Pro Football history. 51,000+ NFL yards, 300+ TDs, 5,000
       yards rushing,
fourth all time in yards behind Warren Moon (70,000+), Damon Allen
       (62,000+), and Dan Marino
       (61,000+). 7, 250 attempts. 4,123 completions. Nine
Pro Bowls. A former League, Playoff and Super Bowl M.V.P Case closed. 2)
Bob Brown, OL, 10 seasons. Philadelphia and L.A (NFL/NFC), Oakland
       (AFC). 126
games. All NFL & NFC selection. Three time s voted best Lineman in
       the LeaguePlayed in
       six Pro Bowls. 3)
Carl Eller, DL, 16 seasons. Minnesota (NFC), Seattle (AFC). 94 sacks
       (unofficial), 23
fumble recoveries of opponents (official). Six Pro Bowls. 4)
Barry Sanders, RB, 10 seasons. Detroit (NFC). 153 straight games. League
       Co-MVP with
Brett Favre, Green Bay QB in '97. 14,000+ yards. Behind alltime only
       Emmitt Smith,
Walter Payton, Mike Pringle & George Reed in Pro Football rushing
       yards. 10 straght
Pro Bowls. 10 consecutive 1000 yard rushing seasons.
Now, me and Scott's complaints: Where the hell is the best OE in NFL
       history, Art
Monk [Washington, Philadelphia(NFC), N.Y. Jets (AFC)] Over 900+ catches,
       the best blocking WR ever
and the only receiver in NFL history to start games
       at the 'X', 'Y', 'Z'
receiver spots?! Only four choices this year? How come? Sometimes
in the past there were five
to seven! I have nothing against any of the fine selections.
 Elway,
in his first year and Sanders in his second, of eligibility are great
       and easy picks. Brown
and Eller perhaps in their day, greats too. Picked from Old Timers
       ballot. But this is
the fifth year in a row Monk has been screwed! Unfriggin' real! Or how
       about in the CFL
Hall, no Charelton 'Cookie' Gilchrist?! Two major injustices!" Moose

Carter, cut from Dallas Cowboys for failing a drug test, has been put on

       Canada." Jerry Nuffy
        No
Nuffy it's not OK to do the Horrible Cocaine Crack EVIL Drug in Canada at
all. I see many people every day on Granville screwed up on that EVIL
Drug. Kid's don't ever do Cocaine, Crack or Rock they call it as well.

arm? Rubbish! Moose's NFL update! Oh no he's into Eli Manning now!
        It
stated in a certain US Pro Footy Weekly Mag this week that
        "Ex-CFLer
Ricky Ray was signed in the off season. Like Pennington, Ray doesn't have
a strong arm but he's very accurate. He may be a little better athlete
but he doesn't manage the ball as well."
Ricky Ray to Ed Hervey or Jason Tucker the length of the CFL field I
thought happened many a time. I reckon we will not see Ricky back in the
CFL for at least 5 years as he will kick butt when he gets his chance but

 NFL News By:
       Moose Salzer
 Myk edited my dispatch last
week shrieking that "Moose, you can't say that" when
       I correctly stated that 3.5
avg per-carry wimp Ricky Williams would rather smoke
       pot and listen to Bob
Marley (Mon), then play Footie in the third best Pro League
       on planet earth, the NFL.
But this past week it came out that I was right on the
money (again) when USA Today Sports said Williams was due to be suspended
       by the NFL
for his third straight drug bust by the League in testing. Still no Art
       Monk, the greatest
OE in NFL history in the Canton 'Pro Football' Hall-of-Fame. A travesty
       worthy of Leslie Neilsen's
next Spoof. Q-"How many NFL Hall of Famer pickers does
it take to screw in a lightbulb?"

Also: The New Jersey Nuclear Swamp Giants
       just threw a rookie record
$54 mil. down the proverbial rathole on Eli (I smell
       like a bust)
Manning. He'll be just like his dad (Awful Archie, 28-72-1 career)
       and not like
his very improved bro, Peyton (Place), who still isn't worth squat in
       the playoffs (2-4
career record). Switch gears: two ex-NFL'r's, Super Bowl losers, Dan
       Reeves, 201
wins in 21 years as Coach and his former 'Dirty Birds' RB Jamal (Jam)
       Anderson (ny) will be in
limited action on the NCAA broadcasts this fall in limited
       duty, as announcers
(god help us all!)...The jury is still out. I'll have a ham sandwich,
       if any- body yells
out, "Order in the court". But then, I'm the kinda guy that
       sneaks into Fire
Stations and yells, 'Movie'! More next week!" Moose out
