OTTAWA
– The
Canadian Football League (CFL) today announced that the “greatest band in the
land”, Canada’s
own The Tragically Hip will take centre field at the 92nd Grey Cup
Halftime Show in the Nation’s Capital.
The
critically acclaimed The Tragically Hip have been at the heart of the Canadian

their music and their fans that remains unrivaled in this country.
The five-piece group of friends who grew up down the road in Kingston,

16 04 “CFL East semi-final to be played Nov. 5 if Argos host" Ravi.
Oh no a Kid’s
Australian Band booking may change the CFL Playoff schedule, now that is Crazy!"
Myk Aussie
This
post started by Total-CFLer legend Ravi was one of my favorite posts this week.
A possible upcoming Crazy CFL story but some Aussie content that I though you
guys might enjoy.
This
was reported this week in the press "A league source requesting anonymity
said the CFL's board of governors decided Thursday that if Toronto earns the
right to host the East Division semifinal, the game will be played at SkyDome on
Nov. 5 - two days earlier than originally scheduled - to accommodate a previous
booking of a popular children's group."
"Really
sad or pathetic that something like this could happen; obviously, the CFL
still
has a long way to go to achieve respect in certain parts of the country; the
CFL should not have allowed this to happen, but i don't know who really is to
blame or how hard it would have been to guarantee the Argos could host a
play-off game on the Sunday as it's meant to be. And yeah, a Friday night
play-off game is not the end of the world or anything, it's just not right
though." OV Bandit
"I
don't know. How accommodating would you be of a tenant that does nothing but
badmouth your facility in the media and can't wait to get out? Too
bad Rogers didn't buy Sportco out yet. This wouldn't happen with Rogers owning
the Dome." Argonut
"It
sure seems to me that Sportco has earned the flak. And the Argos are the
customer here. The fact that 'The Wiggles' can't be moved speaks volumes
about the current management of that facility. I wouldn't want to be the
one left holding the bag when the Jays share Montreal's fate." Sugarfoot In
Mouth Disease
"Nut's
assessment isn't exactly accurate either. I have never heard the Argos
owners trash the SkyDome or its management even though they have had every right
to do so IMO. In fact, all that I have ever heard from Sokolowski and
Cynamon is positive things about working with the SkyDome people. Perhaps,
'Nut would prefer if the Argos said nothing about moving into a new stadium but
just let it be built and move in at the last minute without any kind of
announcement so that they don't hurt SkyDome's feelings. :-) One thing
that I do agree with him about is that the Argos would be better off dealing
with Rogers than with Sportsco." Ravi
"First
of all I had never heard of "The Wiggles" until I read this thread
tonight. Whoever they are they don't carry the same clout as U2 did in Montreal
several years back. However if they are popular enough to warrant a venue like
Skydome then obviously Skydome has to listen. At this point in time there is
every liklihood that the Argos will host the Eastern Semi-Final that weekend.
However that is not yet etched in stone. Hamilton still can catch the Argos for
2nd and the Argos still can catch Montreal for 1st. So it remains a possibility
there would not be a football game that weekend.
To
play devil's advocate as management of Skydome what do you do? You are a private
enterprise whose #1 business objective is to ensure that the facility turns a
profit at the end of the year. So when somebody comes knocking on your door to
book the facility for 2 consecutive nights (20% of a CFL home season) do you
blow them off because there is a possibility of a CFL playoff game down the
road? This booking could well have been arranged months ago, maybe before the
season started. If
"The Wiggles" are on for 2 nights then for Sportsco management the
question to be answered might well be "Is two birds in the hand worth one
in the bush?" Hambone

the highlight details/excellent Discussion on the Khari Jones, Joe Fleming etc
Big Trade earlier this week started by Blue Fan check it out below!" Myk
Aussie
”BOMBERS
TRADE KHARI JONES TO CALGARY”
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have traded quarterback Khari Jones to Calgary along
with fullback Randy Bowles in exchange for defensive lineman Joe Fleming, safety
Wes Lysack -- a Winnipeg native --, and fullback Scott Regimbald. The
33-year-old Jones was in his fifth Blue Bomber season, and the recent emergence
of quarterback Kevin Glenn and the acquisition of highly regarded quarterback
Tee Martin made the Bombers willing to part with Jones and his big contract, and
that contract played a major role in this deal. Jones threw for more than 20,000
yards in his four-and-a-half Bomber seasons, but he's struggled this year and
the Bombers have decided he is no longer their future. Lysack and Fleming are
expected to be immediately inserted into the Bomber lineup" Blue Fan
“I
guess that both teams filled a need with this trade, but it's one of those
that's a little hard to figure IMO.” GreatWhiteNorth
“I don't feel like Fleming was the major part of the team. He was a salary
dump. Getting the two first round draft picks in areas of weakness was the major
part of the deal.” Colin Unger
”Correction
- Regimbald WAS a 1st round pick in the 2000 draft - 7th overall in a pick the
Stamps acquired from Hamilton - Regimabld played TE at the U of Houston.” OV
Bandit
“Matt
Dunigan should be fired for this trade. He would not sign Dickenson for $400,000
but he trades for a quarterback who could'nt start for a bad team. This trade
was made to save face and will not improve this team. Our receivers are bad and
are running backs are bad. Marcus Crandell could not survive under this
offensive scheme so who wolud Jones be any better. If they let Jones run his own
offense there is a possibility he might be able to survive. It was a given that
Fleming would be traded, but to get a $1,000,000 quarterback in return is
stupid. It's amazing that Regimbald won the game for them and is traded the next
day. The circus has not left town.” Jerry Nuffy
“You
cannot lay any blame on Dunigan for Dickenson. I'm sure Dunigan would've signed
Dickenson in a heartbeat for $400,000 if it wasn't for the fact Dave still had 3
years left in his 4 year contract with BC when Matt was hired in Calgary.”
Hambone
“Last
time I checked Winnipeg was in the upper half of the league. Not a great team.
But no a bad team. Sure Khari can start on a bad team. Like Calgary.” Colin
Unger
“There
isn't a team in the league not cheating/playing with the guideline we like to
call a cap. Until the CFL gets to be as good as the NFL ... where all salaries
and signing bonuses are PUBLIC ... that problem will NEVER go away."
Argonut
"And then Sugarfoot In Mouth Disease steps in in a Big way" Myk Aussie
“My
initial reaction to this was the same as Lorenzo's- I didn't care for it one
bit. It didn't make sense to me to evicerate the defense and dump quality
Canadian talent for a QB of marginal skill, health, and age. I thought of it
originally as the end of the 2004 season, and the first sign that the Stampeders
2005 season ticket campaign had officially begun. Why do this now? There
are at least 3 teams that have QB issues to consider in the off season (after
Winnipeg, BC with Printers/Dickenson, and Sask with Greene/Burris come to mind),
that were every bit as worthwhile considerations as the Jones deal.
Now
that I've had some time to reflect on this, though, I like the deal. I may not
be the biggest Jones fan on the planet, but this trade meets the requirements of
what I was asking from my team 2 months ago. And, at the end of the day, the
asking price might not be all that high. The Fleming free agency has been talked
to death here, and depth at the front 3 isn't a huge issue for Calgary,
especially with Migratory Maxie signing for multiple years.
I also thought that Calgary would be on the hook for Jones' incredibly stupid
salary, but it turns out that Winnipeg gets to eat that. Bonus. That's exactly
what SHOULD happen to cap cheats.
Regimbald
is a loss, but Calgary's offensive scheme (if it can be called a scheme) never
used him all that effectively anyways, and Diebert will be back soon. He
was one of my favourites, though, and he'll be missed.
Similarly is the case with Lysack, but I suppose that this will give Matt
McKnight a chance to step up, and then Calgary can determine if another Canadian
DB is something they want to pursue in the off-season.
The
fact that this deal didn't include Crandell to Winnipeg is what really surprises
me, and his season-ending hand/wrist tendon injury might have well played into
that. While all parties deny it, I bet that the original deal was Jones to
Calgary for Crandell and Fleming, and the whole Lysack/Regimbald/Bowles/Pick
thing came up as a response to Crandell's inability to at least serve a backup
role for Winnipeg down the stretch.
Now
if I'm a Winnipeg fan, I'd be a little pissed. Winnipeg traded from their only
area of depth (QB) to a team in desperate need, and didn't get any help where
they really needed it, at OL. Lysack is a good pick up for a team thin on N-imp
talent in the defensive backfield, and Regimbald might be an upgrade over Bowles
as far as the type of blocking that would benefit Roberts' running game, but
those issues could have been addressed off-season. This strikes me as
very desperate short-term thinking on Winnipeg's part to make the playoffs,
which would be designed to put a positive PR spin on what will likely otherwise
go down as a pretty underwhelming season. While it might sell season tickets for
2005 (better sell them before Joe signs as a free agent elsewhere), it likely
won't put a much better of a team on the field next year.
Not only that, Winnipeg continues to mortgage their draft-pick future, at a time
when N-imp talent is at such a premium for them. No, I don't think that
this was a good trade for Winnipeg.” Sugarfoot In Mouth Disease
”And
by bringing in Jones now, they get a little training camp for him to become
familiar with the offence, and for the coaches to become more familiar with him.
Both have real potential value for tweaking the scheme over the
off-season. Bringing in anyone in the February to May timeframe isn't going to
yield the same positives, and I think it's wishful thinking to believe that
Burris or Dickenson will be on the market for next year at something resembling
the price they paid for Jones. If either of those other two are options, having
Jones to dangle in return is nothing but a positive.” GreatWhiteNorth
