Promising national player prospects from U.S. colleges added to NFL Europe League rosters

FOUR national player prospects who have been starring in the college football ranks in the United States are being added to NFL Europe League rosters ahead of the Week 5 action. The highly-touted international athletes – German safety CLAUDIUS OSEI, Norwegian defensive end ANDERS AKERSTROM, Belgian defensive tackle PATRICE MAJONDO-MWAMBA and Finnish defensive tackle MICHAEL QUARSHIE – arrived in Europe this week and will be on the field this weekend.

The quartet were drafted in following several season-ending injuries to key national players such as Frankfurt Galaxy defensive lineman DANIEL BENETKA, Galaxy linebacker CUNEYT TOPCU and Hamburg Sea Devils linebacker ADEN DURDE.

Former Team Europe standout Osei, who played in 48 games at Florida State from 2001-2004, will return to the city of Hamburg, where he starred as an amateur player before heading to the United States to record 117 tackles, 1 interception, 2 pass defenses and 2 forced fumbles for one of the biggest programs in American college football.

Looking forward to making his NFLEL debut against Cologne this weekend, Osei said: “I can’t wait to get on the field and start helping the Sea Devils. I am blessed to have this opportunity. Hamburg has always had the best American football fans in Germany and I’m looking forward to coming home and playing in front of them.

“This is another step up from the college level and I am sure I will learn a lot in the professional ranks with the Hamburg Sea Devils. This opportunity is going to help me get better as a player and hopefully I will be able to go on and realize my dream of playing in the NFL.”

Akerstrom and Quarshie will head to the Frankfurt Galaxy and will get their first taste of NFL Europe League action during Saturday’s Deutschland Derby clash with the Rhein Fire. Akerstrom, who hails from Oslo, was a walk-on kicker at the University of Arkansas who got bigger and stronger with each passing season and became a valued member of the school’s football team at the defensive end position.

Quarshie began his gridiron career playing flag football in Finland before joining the Helsinki Roosters junior and senior teams and leading them to Euro Bowl success in 2000. He began his American adventure at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, New Jersey, before transferring to Columbia. He was named team captain prior to his senior season and recorded 59 tackles – including an Ivy League-leading 16 for a loss – 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble, earning All-Ivy League honors.

Quarshie said: “When I was playing amateur football in Finland, NFL Europe was my ultimate goal. I am looking forward to being part of the national player program and hope to make it to the NFL one day.”

Majondo-Mwamba, cousin of Cologne Centurions running back LOLIKI BONGO-WANGA, will play for the Rhein Fire. He spent two seasons (2003-04) at Texas Tech after transferring from Hartnell Community College. In his final college football game, the native of Brussels recorded a sack while helping Texas Tech defeat ninth-ranked California in January’s Holiday Bowl.

NFL Europe Director of International Player and Football Development TONY ALLEN said: “I think these players are going to be great additions to the NFL Europe League. Unfortunately, the circumstances in which they join our league are not the best as we have lost some quality national players. But we are fortunate to be able to call on players we have been tracking for some time in the United States.

“We are excited about these additional players and look forward to seeing them produce on the field in the coming weeks. It will be good for us to compare international players who have come through American colleges to those who have been in our program in Europe.”

Centurions rushing hero Kincade rewarded;

Harden, Brightful and McCready also honored

COLOGNE Centurions running back KEYLON KINCADE (Dallas Cowboys) was named NFL Europe Offensive Player of Week 3 after playing a key role in his club’s rise to the top of the standings with a 23-14 defeat of the Frankfurt Galaxy.

Kincade rushed for 106 yards on 18 carries (5.9-yard average) and caught 4 passes for 46 yards, giving him 152 total yards on the day. He also scored Cologne’s only touchdowns of the contest on a 14-yard pass from quarterback Kevin Thompson in the second quarter and on an 11-yard run in the third period. Praising his running back’s performance, Centurions head coach PETER VAAS said: “Keylon Kincade was very impressive. He is an excellent back and I thought he fought for every inch he got tonight. I was very impressed and he did a nice job.”

Berlin Thunder cornerback MICHAEL HARDEN (Seattle Seahawks) was named Defensive Player of the Week as he stood out during his club’s 31-27 defeat in Amsterdam. Harden recorded 4 tackles and 2 interceptions for 6 yards. His first interception wiped out an Admirals scoring threat at the Thunder 8-yard line and the second pick set up a Berlin touchdown in the third quarter.

Frankfurt Galaxy cornerback LAMONT BRIGHTFUL (New York Giants) was named Special Teams Player of the Week as he showed that pedigree that saw him score an NFL touchdown on a 95-yard punt return with the Baltimore Ravens in 2002.   Brightful took the opening kickoff of Frankfurt’s game against Cologne 85 yards for a touchdown. He also recorded 1 tackle and knocked down 3 passes on defense.

For the second weekend in a row, English wide receiver SCOTT McCREADY was named National Player of the Week after catching 9 passes for 101 yards during the Hamburg Sea Devils 31-24 defeat of the Rhein Fire. McCready, who won National Player of the Week honors four times as a member of the Scottish Claymores in 2004, ranks fifth on the NFL Europe League’s all-time receptions chart with 123. He can move past former Orlando Thunder and London Monarchs tight end Michael Titley (124 career catches) with 2 receptions in Week 4, and will tie former London Monarchs running back Judd Garrett (126 career receptions) for a place in the all-time top three with 3 catches this weekend.

Through three games, McCready tops NFL Europe with 19 receptions for 213 yards and is bidding to make league history by becoming the first player to lead the league in catches twice, having done so with 59 receptions in 2004.

Galaxy hero Galloway rewarded for record night; Berlin duo honored; McCready grabs Week 2 prize

FRANKFURT Galaxy running back AHMAAD GALLOWAY (San Diego Chargers) has been named NFL Europe Offensive Player of Week 2 after rushing for a club record 161 yards during his team’s 23-14 defeat of the Amsterdam Admirals on Saturday.

Galloway, who played for the Scottish Claymores in 2004, carried the football 31 times as the Galaxy overcame a 14-0 deficit to down the Admirals and even their record at 1-1. His rushing yardage total surpassed the club record figure of 143 set by Curtis Alexander against the Barcelona Dragons on April 20, 2002. Galloway averaged 4.9 yards per carry with a long of 31 yards and scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter. Through two games this season, Galloway has rushed for a league-leading 198 yards on 42 carries.

Linebacker MICHAEL BROWN (Atlanta Falcons) was one of two Berlin Thunder players honored this week for their roles in a 15-13 defeat of the Hamburg Sea Devils. Brown recorded 3 tackles and came up with 2 key sacks for a total of 18 lost yards. His first sack came in the opening quarter as the Sea Devils were threatening to score the game’s first touchdown having moved to the Thunder 4-yard line. Brown sacked Hamburg quarterback Casey Bramlet for an 8-yard loss and the Sea Devils were forced to settle for a Todd France field goal. Brown’s second sack came with 5:39 left in the first half as he dropped Ryan Dinwiddie for a 10-yard loss at Hamburg’s 5-yard line. The play forced a punt that allowed the Thunder to begin their ensuing drive at the Sea Devils 26-yard line. Brown added 1 special teams tackle.

Special Teams Player of the Week honors went to Thunder punter BRIAN SIMNJANOVSKI (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), who placed three of his four punts inside Hamburg’s 20-yard line, helping his club win the field position battle in a close game. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers allocate averaged 41.3 yards on four punts and landed his kicks at the Hamburg 2, 10 and 18-yard lines. His other kick saw Hamburg begin their ensuing drive at their own 20-yard line. Simnjanovski’s most important kick came inside the game’s opening two minutes as he pinned the Sea Devils at their own 2-yard line with a 45-yard effort. On the following play, Hamburg running back Zack Abron was trapped in the end zone for a two-point safety that proved to be the margin of victory at the end of the game.

English wide receiver SCOTT McCREADY was named National Player of Week 2 after catching 8 passes for 88 yards during Hamburg’s loss to Berlin. Those figures saw McCready become the all-time leader among national players in receptions (114) and yards (1,231), smashing the marks set by former Scottish Claymores wide receiver Scott Couper. McCready, who won National Player of the Week honors four times as a member of the Scottish Claymores in 2004, ranks fifth on the NFL Europe League’s all-time receptions chart. He took the national receiving records in his fourth NFLEL campaign after Couper took nine seasons to establish the marks.

NFL Europe Senior Manager of International Player Development JEFF REINEBOLD said: “Scott has proven that he is one of the outstanding receivers to have ever played in the NFL Europe League – American or international.

“We’re extremely proud of what he has been able to accomplish because he exemplifies the attributes of hard work, discipline, commitment and professionalism that we are trying to get all the young international players to take on board.”

Mon April 11, 05 "Werner Hippler climbing NFL E receiving charts, now in second place!" Moose

Werner Hippler, Canadian-raised, German-born Cologne TE-ST'r,  moved up to 2nd among National OEs in pass catching, behind former Scotland Claymore WR, Scott 'Scoups' Couper. Couper is now Coach Jack Bicknell's WR Coach at Amsterdam. Hipp had 2 first down catches in the Cologne win over Hamburg (formerly Barcelona) from QB Kevin Thompson.

Hippler, who also played two years in the NFL for San Diego and one year ('01) in the XFL for Las Vegas, serving as Paul McCallum's kick-snapper, has 88 career catches - 1 in the XFL, and 87 more in NFL E. Couper retired after the Scotland Claymores left NFL E two years ago, with 107 catches. The alltime NFL E leading pass catcher is American Mario Bailey, with 299 catches in 6 seasons.

If Hippler plays all ten games this year, he will pass Couper as NFL E's alltime leader in games played with 88. Couper still leads with 87 games in 8 seasons. Hippler, by playing in the first game this year, is NFL E's only nine-year vet." Moose

Admirals duo scoop prizes; Playmaking wide receiver and record-setting kicker rewarded.

NFLE2005 – Player Week 1  Neil Reynolds

TWO key members of the Amsterdam Admirals have been honoured with NFL Europe League Player of the Week prizes after outstanding performances during their team’s 24-14 defeat of the Rhein Fire in Week 1. Cornerback B.J. TUCKER (Seattle Seahawks) was named Defensive Player of the Week after his decisive 43-yard interception return for a touchdown ended any hopes of a Fire comeback midway through the fourth quarter.

Tucker, who also recorded 2 tackles and defended 2 passes, intercepted Rhein quarterback Scott McBrien on the right sideline and weaved through would-be tacklers for a touchdown that gave the Admirals an unassailable 24-6 lead with 7:41 remaining.

Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS said: “B.J. Tucker’s interception came at a crucial time in the game. Any time you are able to score two touchdowns within 90 seconds, you’re able to shift the momentum in your favour. The pick and returning it for a score was huge because it created a gap we had been struggling to establish and helped us get the win.” On his NFL Europe League debut, Admirals Swedish linebacker CARL-JOHAN BJÖRK was named National Player of the Week. The native of Stockholm, Sweden, recorded 3 tackles and also broke up a key third down screen pass intended for Fire running back Dahrran Diedrick. NFL Europe Director of International Player Development TONY ALLEN, who oversees NFL Europe’s national player programme, said: “Carl has been asked to step up and prove he is ready for the NFL Europe League following the preseason injury suffered by linebacker Rikiya Ishida. He certainly showed he can make an impact in NFL Europe and I’m pleased to see him pick up this award on his debut in the league.”

Offensive Player of the Week honours went to explosive Cologne Centurions wide receiver ROMBY BRYANT, who was allocated to NFL Europe by the Atlanta Falcons.

Bryant opened his NFLEL career by catching a 51-yard pass from Centurions quarterback Kevin Thompson on Cologne’s first offensive play of the new season. He ended his day by catching a game-winning 56-yard strike from Thompson with 4:55 remaining in Cologne’s thrilling 24-23 defeat of the expansion Hamburg Sea Devils. Bryant ended his first taste of NFLEL action with 3 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Praising Bryant and Cologne’s other wide receivers, Centurions quarterback Thompson said: “The receivers were absolutely unbelievable. I’m the most fortunate guy in the league. These guys are the most talented out there – they are all smart, all intelligent and all playmakers.”

Hamburg Sea Devils kicker TODD FRANCE (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) was named Special Teams Player of the Week after tying league records for field goals made 5 (Rhein Fire’s Manfred Burgsmüller and Barcelona Dragons’ Jesus Angoy) and field goals attempted 6 (Frankfurt’s Ralf Kleinmann) in a game.

France connected on field goals of 26, 30, 38, 48 and 54 yards (worth four points in NFL Europe) and added 1 conversion for a 17-point haul. His 5 field goals and 6 attempts were records for American kickers in NFL Europe.

France, who kicked 4 field goals in the entire 2003 regular season as a member of the Rhein Fire, said: “I didn’t think about the records too much until they were pointed out to me. I was thinking about losing a game we should have won. Hopefully, this loss doesn’t come back to haunt us.”
