Tues May 25, 05 "Moose's NFL Europe report! NFL Europe was on Fox!

I enjoyed watching the NFL Europe on Fox over the weekend, the 1st time this year that a game has been broadcast. Some great interviews as well with NFL coaches throughout the broadcast along with some very nice European babe cheerleading footage.

NFL Europe  / NFL Update

By: Rich Salzer

Week Eight Game Balls:

1)      Jarrett Payton, RB, Amsterdam (not Miami, like I gaffed on last week)

2)      Werner Hippler, TE-KS-STr, Cologne (not aftershave!)

3)      Rich [great name!] Scalon, K.C. Chiefs, Berlin, LB-ST

4)      Dave Miller, K, Berlin (from Virginia Beachs Salem High School!)

5)      Todd France, K, Hamburg

Milestones this past weekend: K Todd France of Hamburg broke the Alltime NFL E record of 4 pt FGs in a season with four this year. The Old record was by Scott Szerdy, Barcelona, back in 95, with 3. FGs Of Fifty of more years in the NFL AAAs are worth 4 pts. [Additional: In the Ar.FL FGs that are dropkicked from anywhere on the field are Worth four points regardless of distance]. Remember, there are two Full games left in the 05 NFL Europe campaign.

Special Callin guest during the NFL E game was Arizona Coach Dennis Green. Ive elsewhere expressed my displeasure with DG, But he was dead-on with his comments on Kurt Warner. Green Even mentioned the Iowa Barnstormers! Warner also played for The only Non-german team left, the Amsterdam Admirals, backed Up by one Jake (cajan snake) Delhomme, in 98. Green and Bill Bidwell Are looking smarter all the time with a QB contingent in Arizona now

Made up of: Kurt Warner, Timmy Chang (Univ. of Hawaii) and Josh McCown [for now; I fully expect Chang and Dave Navarre to beat out McCown before Labour Day. Expect McCown to be traded.

The New York Jets are looking dumber all the time! They just Signed Ar.FL third-string Nashville QB Bill Whittmore, but released Ricky Ray last week. Lets see and do the math; they release a former Af2 star / two-time Grey Cup QB like Ray but get all enthused after One workout with an Arena third stringer! Well, P.T. Barnum was Right Herman (Out-of-Miracles-in-the-Meadowlands) Edwards, There is one born every minute!

Boob Molinaro strikes (out) again! This ditty from Boob this week; He claims that Denvers current WRs couldnt carry Jerry (Geritol) Rices lunch a couple of years ago. Lets see if we can figure out That remark; Ashley Lelie replaced Big Ed McCaffrey so easily That its as if Big Ed never won those four Super Bowl rings (two with Denver, one behind Rice in San Fran. Yrs. Ago) and Rod Smith helped Denver and Elway win those last two Super Bowls? Somebody toe-tag this guy, puleeze!

Week Nine Picks:

Cologne OVER Rhein, who is 1-7 and having their worst season ever!

Amsterdam OVER Hamburg

Frankfurt OVER Berlin, who has won three of the last 4 NFL E Bowls."Moose

NFLE2005 – Player Week 7   Neil Reynolds May 17, 2005

Thunder duo grab Player of Week prizes; Week 7 overtime winners also rewarded

TWO members of a Berlin Thunder team that recorded a 24-15 victory over the Rhein Fire on Saturday night have been rewarded with Player of the Week honors.

Wide receiver AARON BOONE (Carolina Panthers) was named Offensive Player of Week 7 as he caught 8 passes for 112 yards (45 long) and scored the game’s opening touchdown on a 5-yard reception from quarterback Dave Ragone (Houston Texans). Through seven games this season, Boone – who won a World Bowl ring with the Thunder in 2004 – has caught a team-leading 26 passes for 363 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Boone said: “Coach (Rick Lantz) told me that with this being my second year, I needed to step up with (wide receiver) Michael Jennings down with an injury today. Fortunately, I was able to do that and we got on a little bit of a roll.” German defensive end CHRISTIAN MOHR – who was allocated to NFL Europe by the Seattle Seahawks – was named National Player of Week 7 as he registered 5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble while helping Berlin improve to a league-leading 5-2 record. Mohr, who has recorded 16 tackles, a team-leading 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles this season, said: “I was happy with my own performance but it was really the whole defense that came together. I am making progress but I know that I have to keep working hard.

“Once this season is over my goal is to go to training camp with Seattle and win a roster spot, but right now I am not thinking beyond our last three games of the year. I want a successful end to the season with the Thunder and to become a better player.

Defensive Player of the Week honors went to Hamburg Sea Devils safety SHAWN MAYER (Atlanta Falcons) who tied the NFLEL single-game record with 3 interceptions for 36 yards during his team’s 30-24 overtime defeat of the Amsterdam Admirals. His interception total matched a feat achieved on eight previous occasions in the NFL Europe League. Mayer added 7 tackles during a game that saw quarterbacks from both teams combine to throw a league record 10 interceptions. The Falcons-allocated defensive back now leads NFL Europe with 5 interceptions for 48 yards and has added 31 tackles, 7 pass break-ups and a forced fumble.

Sea Devils head coach JACK BICKNELL said: “We had some very important and outstanding performances tonight. I thought Shawn Mayer played extremely well and was a big factor in us winning the game.”

Mayer added: “Interception-wise, it was a great game for me personally. I have some little things to improve on but it was a solid performance and we won – that’s what it’s all about.”

Cologne kicker JIMMY KIBBLE was named Special Teams Player of the Week after his 37-yard effort with 1:14 remaining in overtime gave the table-topping Centurions a 20-17 victory over the Frankfurt Galaxy.

After landing his game-winner in rainy, slippery conditions, Kibble said: “I just kept thinking, ‘Don’t slip.’ (Center) Mike Mabry and (holder) Kevin Thompson, and the offensive line, are the ones who gave me the shot to kick it. For me it was just a case of doing what I do.”

Kibble also converted a 43-yard field goal and 2 of 2 PATs. He has successfully kicked 13 of 15 field goals this season and ranks third in NFL Europe with 53 points.

NFLE2005 – Player Week 6 Neil Reynolds.

Admirals rushing trio rewarded after record effort; Scanlon and Amundson also honored in Week 6

THREE running backs who helped the Amsterdam Admirals rush for an NFL Europe League record-tying 331 yards during last Sunday’s 48-10 defeat of the Frankfurt Galaxy have been rewarded with Player of the Week prizes.

JONATHAN SMITH (Kansas City Chiefs) and JARRETT PAYTON (Tennessee Titans) were jointly named Offensive Players of Week 6, while French running back SANDINO OCTOBRE was awarded the National Player of the Week prize. Smith, who leads NFL Europe with 486 rushing yards on 87 carries, led the Admirals with 131 yards on 19 carries against the Galaxy, with a longest gain of 49 yards.

Payton, who ranks third in NFL Europe with 410 rushing yards and leads the league in rushing touchdowns (5) and average yards per carry (6.6), gained 97 yards on 9 carries against Frankfurt, scoring on runs of 18 and 27 yards.

Octobre gained an all-time national player record 94 yards on 13 carries with a long of 38 yards. During the 2005 season, the native of Paris, France, has rushed for 95 yards and caught 2 passes for 31 yards.

Talking of his award-winning running backs, Amsterdam Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS said: “We have a real potent running game. When you are able to run the football like we are, it is a big part of achieving success.”

Payton added: “We are clicking on all cylinders. Me and Jonathan Smith talk all the time about how if we didn’t have a great offensive line we couldn’t make plays. They make it easy for us because they are doing all the dirty work. I wouldn’t want to be a defensive coordinator trying to come up with a scheme to stop both of us.”

Defensive Player of the Week honors went to Berlin Thunder linebacker RICH SCANLON (Kansas City Chiefs), who recorded a game-high 9 tackles and 2 sacks for 13 yards during his team’s 23-17 loss at the hands of the Cologne Centurions.

Scanlon has led the Thunder in tackles in every game this season. He leads all NFL Europe League defenders with 56 tackles and has added 2 sacks, 2 pass defenses and 1 interception for 49 yards. Praising his star linebacker, Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ said: “I think he could be playing on Sundays in the future.”

Hamburg Sea Devils defensive back ALLAN AMUNDSON (San Francisco 49ers) was named Special Teams Player of the Week after he ripped off a 71-yard kickoff return against the Rhein Fire.

The big return – which was among Amundson’s 5 kickoff returns for 139 yards (27.8 average) – set up a third quarter touchdown for the Sea Devils. Through six games, Amundson ranks third in NFL Europe with a 24.1 kickoff return average (8 for 193 yards).

NFLE2005 – Player Week 5      Neil Reynolds May 3

Fire duo rewarded for efforts in losing cause;

‘Big Play’ Mays and France also honored in Week 5

DESPITE being on the wrong end of a 23-20 scoreline in Frankfurt on Saturday evening, two members of the Rhein Fire have scooped NFL Europe League Player of the Week honors. Tennessee Titans-allocated running back JOE SMITH was named Offensive Player of Week 5 after he shredded the Galaxy defense for 152 rushing yards on 28 carries, scoring on a 9-yard run to give the Fire a four-point lead midway through the final period.

Smith – who also caught a 3-yard pass last week – leads NFL Europe in rushing with 387 yards on 81 carries (4.8-yard average). In the past two weeks, he has racked up 272 yards and 2 touchdowns in losses to Berlin and Frankfurt.

German safety RICHARD YANCY – who spent the 2004 NFL season on the practice squad of the San Francisco 49ers – was named National Player of the Week after recording 5 tackles against Frankfurt, taking his season tally to 22 stops and 1 forced fumble. Those figures have Yancy ranked first among national players in NFL Europe and third on the Fire defense.

Defensive Player of the Week honors went to Berlin Thunder cornerback JERMAINE MAYS, of the Indianapolis Colts. ‘Big Play’ Mays sealed Berlin’s 27-16 victory over the Amsterdam Admirals by returning an interception 100 yards for a touchdown with seven seconds remaining to give the Thunder the tiebreaker edge over their Dutch rivals should it be needed in order to determine qualifiers for Yello Strom World Bowl XIII at the end of the 2005 season.

Mays ended the game having recorded 2 tackles, 1 interception, 4 passes defended and also recovering a fumble on special teams. It marked the third time in the first half of the season that a Mays interception has either clinched victory for the Thunder or put them in position to win the game.

In Week 2, he preserved a 15-13 lead against the Hamburg Sea Devils by picking off Casey Bramlet at Berlin’s 30-yard line with 54 seconds remaining. And in Week 4, he intercepted Fire quarterback Scott McBrien to give Berlin possession at Rhein’s 12-yard line, from where Kevin Miller kicked a game-winning 31-yard field goal with 1:14 remaining.

Returning veteran Mays, who won a World Bowl ring with the Thunder in 2004 and leads NFL Europe with 3 interceptions, said: “I’m just trying to go out there and help my team. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s the end of the game or the first play of the game. I just want to make plays to help our defense when I have my opportunity. It just so happens that it has been at the end of some ball games.”

TODD FRANCE (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) was named Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time in the season’s opening five weeks after he led the Hamburg Sea Devils to a 23-6 defeat of the Cologne Centurions.

France converted 3 of 3 field goals, from 42, 33 and 29 yards, and added 2 of 2 PATs for an 11-point haul. At the season’s halfway mark, France leads NFL Europe with 54 points, having converted 14 of 16 field goals, with a long of 54, and 11 of 11 PATs.

He remains on pace to smash the single-season records for points (85), field goal attempts (27) and successful field goals (23) set by former Barcelona Dragons kicker Scott Szeredy in 1995.

Week 5 Scores:

Berlin 26, Amsterdam 17

Frankfurt 23, Rhein 20, O.T.

Hamburg 27, Cologne 25

Week 5 Game Balls:

1) Joe Hall, S, Berlin

2) Joe Smith, RB, Rhein

3) Jonathan Smith, FB, Amsterdam

4) Jarrett Payton, RB, Amsterdam

5) Ahmaad Galloway, RB, Frankfurt

Notes - One of the reasons for the realignment of teams the last few seasons is to form several strong rivlaries in the League. There still is sort of a rivalry between Frankfurt and slumping Rhein, but the real rivalries, Geographically speaking now are: Berlin and Hamburg , Rhein and Cologne and Amsterdam  and Frankfurt . all three of these matchups are two hour train drives apart.  Cologne is slipping out of the picture with the same dopey offencive play calling that got them a 4-6 mark last season. They went 2-6 until they started throwing the ball to seemingly ALWAYS open vet Werner Hippler. He has caught 87 balls in less than nine seasons in NFL Europe, the most by a TE in League history. He also caught one more in the XFL in '01.

Not bad for a supposed 'blocker', only. Hipp needs to see the ball more. Why, you ask? because his 87 NFL E catches are for an unconcionable 71 first downs! Hey Centurians' Coach, Pete Vaas...Stop trying to force   japanese import QB, Ken Namiki into the lineup so much. I like the kid too, but a three QB system isn't gonna work. Back in '02, the University of Hawai'i , mainly because Shawn Withy-Allen was a senior/SLASH &  because of starter Timmy Chang's injuries, Coach June Jones got the Warriors off to a bad 1-2 start by trying to take the pressure off Chang by using all three QBs, especially in the 35-32 loss to BYU, in a game that I feel Hawai'i should have won by at least two TDs.

Withy averaged 16 yards per carry and Jason 'Opie' Wheildon threw two short yardage TDs inside the red zone, but it threw Chang's rhthym off being yanked in and out of the lineup. Same is happening to the Centurians who have used three QBs the last two weeks and lost both times. Two QBs are fine, if you give them each a half, but no more unless you're Waaaaayyy up!
