Talking Aussie Footy on
Calgary's QR77 SportsTalk with Mark Stephen!
Stevo Bananabender my Eagles mate called me tonight from after Eagles
training. He reckons he has got a couple of Bananabenders joined this
week that played top level in Bananabender land. He may be BShitting but
not sure. He and Freemo coach wanted Roo's news, told them little, just
told him me and ruckman Mossa were out, that was it.
I was on QR77 SportsTalk with Mark Stephen tonight talking CFL, Tour De
Frogs Testosterone +ve test an the NFL. I started talking about Aussie
punters Matt McBriar & Ben Graham in the NFL so that lead me easily into
talking about Calgary Kangaroo's going to defend the BC Footy Cup this
weekend in Vancouver. So got a good minute or so in talking about it.
Mark is a good guy if you guys ever listen 9-11pm each night. Good luck
to all players this weekend especially the Calgary Kangaroos #1 and then
the Burnaby Eagles #2. I hope to see the BC Footy Cup/Smelly Boot back in
Calgary next Wednesday. To listen to SportTalk weeknights 9-11pm Calgary
Roo's time
From Thurs, July 27. I believe the Roo’s can
retain the BC Footy Cup/ “Smelly Boot”! Below is as to be posted
especially for the new calgarykangaroos.ca
The Roo’s guys
settled in earlier than a usual Wednesday night after Coach Troy Rose
told the guys at training to be well prepared for the Biggest Footy
Weekend of the year to date, the annual trip to Vancouver for the BC
Footy Cup! It was great to hear this week that the games will again be
played at the magnificent UBC Thunderbird Stadium. I’m sure an Aussie
designed this field as it is shaped just like a Aussie Footy field but
used as the CIS Footy field for the UBC team ie CFL style footy.
Seriously the surface is as good as Footy Park the home of the mighty
Adelaide Crows.
Although legend Roo’s Chriso will be
missed this year, with the existing good on-ballers and the acquisition
this year of 2 great players in Victorian’s Brad Flower and Brad Copeland
I believe the Roo’s will have the on-ball advantage. The Roo’s also have
several other very good Aussie newcomers and they definitely have the
advantage in the CDN player talent with CDN veterans (well a few years
playing) guys like Gareth President, Trevor and Josh. 2nd year
CDN player the fit CDN Matty Henke should be a player to watch as he
competes with the Aussie on-ballers possibly in a tagging role against
the Aussies that have played our great game for years. Roo’s 05 Best &
Fairest Judgey will also be a key either in the ruck, up forward or used
to stop opposition key forwards like Cougar veterans Stuart Grills and
Doug Vargo and Grizzles Bigman coach Andrew Donlen. Andrew was
definitely the difference in the 05 NWPAL Grand Final as the Seattle
Grizzles narrowly defeated my 05 team the Burnaby Eagles. Even though the
Roo’s have to be very confident in their team and their abilities I
believe they will need to definitely watch two Seattle Grizzles forwards
Justin “Shevy” Shevlin and Andrew Donlen. Here is the link o the Grizzles
Bois so you can where you can see these what these 2 great players look
like.
Foe the Cougars Stuart
Grills “if fit” has the ability to be the best player of the day and in
combination with while Doug Vargo either at full forward, centre half
forward or on the ball the Roo’s will need to watch these two experienced
guys. CDN Cougars ruckman Chris Bennett could be a player to watch
especially in the centre bounces. Legend Didgeridoo player Cougars Shine
Edger is also a very good on-baller. I was disappointed to hear he joined
the Cougars this year after I played with him in 05 for the Eagles.
Players to watch for the
05 NWPAFL runners up the Burnaby Eagles include Dale the Rover who the
Roo’s guys know from the recent Kelowna Cup as Dale got the Eagles back
in the game for awhile. Steveo Bananabender the Eagles 06 skipper and the
Eagles 05 Runner up Best & Fairest. Stevo will probably line up as a
attacking half back flanker but no doubt Chris Freeman the Eagles coach
will move Stevo onto any Roo’s, Cougars or Grizzles forwards that are
causing the Eagles trouble. Stevo was sensational in the Grand Final last
year holding the very dangerous Grizzles full forward Justin “Shevy”
Shevlin who is a very good player. Coach Chris Freeman told me recently
he has been a bit of a goal sneak himself but I believe he needs to keep
his elbows down a bit as well and he will need to play better than he did
recently in Kelowna to be a threat to the Roo’s.
Eagles CDN Full Forward Randy Dickens can be a sensational player. The
Roo’s defender on Randy will need to stick close even do a “Craig Kelly
Pinchy Pinch” on him earlier to put him off his game or else Randy is
capable of kicking many majors. Randy can be a bit up & down. Eagles Big
man defender Peter Taylor is also a very good player but he is a Huge Nth
Melbourne Roo’s fan so maybe he can be recruited to Alberta? I also know
both the Cougars and the Eagles have several very good newcomers this
year that did not make the trip to Kelowna several weeks ago but I can’t
comment on these new players.
If you want to see the magnificent UBC
Stadium and watch last years NWPAFL Grand Final between the Eagles ands
the Grizzles that includes some of the guys to watch for this weekend you
will find a 4 Part MYKwebTV show on here along with last years BC Footy
Cup which includes Judgey, Beau and the Roo's guys drinking out of the BC Footy
Cup/Smelly Booty.
I hope all the Roo’s guys
have a great weekend. Don’t drink too much on Friday night, save it for
Saturday 5.00pm! Advice to new guys that haven’t been to “Crazy Downtown
Vancouver” when you have your Beer goggles on at 3am some of the
“apparently” nice girls in the Granville St “$1.00 a piece pizza shops”
late at night are not as nice as they appear!!!!!!!!!! Single guys, “If
it’s not on, it’s not on” especially in downtown Vancouver.
Note: I was asked tonight
to write a bit of a report for the new Calgarykangaroos.ca that Spud did
a great job on. I do hope though you enjoy the many Free viewing Aussie
Rules Footy MYKwebTV shows in which the Roo’s have been featured several
times since the Stampede Cup in 03. Click

Let’s hope I get to see
the “Smelly Boot/BC Footy Cup” next Wednesday night in Calgary.
Good luck to all Roo’s guys this weekend." Myk Aussie, a current Roo's
player although injured.
From UBC Thunderbird Stadium.
Legend Cougar Peter Campion commentating here at the 2005 NWPAFL Grand Final
with Cougars coach
Stew Grills standing holding the NWPAFL Cup. Doug Vargo Cougars star
forward is co commentator with Mat a injured Eagle holding the beers next to
Hottie Cwoc, former Mrs Cashie. This was in some ways a sad day for these Cougar
greats who both will play their 50th CDN game this weekend as the Cougars
missed the 05 NWPAFL Grand Final.
Cougars Forwards Stuart Grills and Doug Vargo to both play their 50th
games of CDN Footy on Saturday!
Congratulations to Stewy the Cougars coach and excellent player.. Stewy
who I often call "Mr BC Footy" as he has been the main guy behind the
formation and growth of Aussie Rules Footy in BC. Doug Vargo also a very
good Cougar forward and occasional on-baller also has done a lot in
promoting Aussie Rules Footy in BC. Doug is a great reporter often
writing very clever and funny columns on BCFooty.com. For a report
(scroll down to Wed July 26) on the CDN careers of these 2 great Aussie/CDN's

"The West Coast Challenge will be contested at the premier Australian
Rules Football Venue in North America, UBC Thunderbird Stadium. On
Saturday July 29 four teams will hit the picturesque Thunderbird Oval to
try and claim bragging rights as the best team in the North West." Stuart
Grills
I definitely agree with Stuart on this! It is a great Stadium, I think a
Aussie must have designed the field years ago as it is shaped exactly
like a Aussie Rules Footy field yet CDN University CFL/NFL style footy is
played there mainly.
I produced 4 Part MYKwebTV shows from this Stadium of the 05 NWPAFL Grand

10 behinds = 10 points. Thus it is 114 + 10 = 124 points total. A goal is the
ball passing through (after being kicked and not touched) through the 2 Big
white posts. A behind is the ball passing through the Big White post and
the small white post or between the Big white posts but being touched. My AFL tips, scores and nicknames of the AFL teams are

06 BC Footy Cup is
next Saturday. Refer to last weeks column below for the BC Footy Cup
schedule for next Saturday. This Sunday the Calgary Kangaroo's are splitting
into 2 approximate 12 a side teams and playing the Calgary Bears in preparation
for next Saturdays Huge Classes in Vancouver. I believe the Calgary Kangaroos
will again take across a strong side and thus retain the BC Footy Cup.
It will be a great day of footy as
the Burnaby Eagles and the Vancouver Cougars will be at full strength or very
close to it seeing it is at their home. The Seattle Grizzles should again bring
a very good side up to Vancouver. The Grizzles last year finished 2nd to the
Kangaroos on percentage. I must note here though that it was only last year that
the Vancouver Cougars split into 2 teams with the Burnaby Eagles being formed.
This was a great Aussie Footy growth effort. I know the Seattle Grizzles and
Calgary Kangaroos guys were impresed at how strong BC Footy had become with 2
very competitive teams. A couple of months after the 05 BC Footy Cup the Seattle
Grizzles only just defeated the Burnaby Eagles in the NWPAFL Grand Final. All
the MYKwebTV shows of the 05 BC Footy Cup and Grand Final are still up for Free
general viewing. You can see the Roo's guys drinking out of the BC Footy Cup,

BL&GFA South Gawler Lions -
This weeks In the Lions Den
From President Percey "It's all positive at the Den with another good week
on and off the field. Congratulations to all our football players, coaches and
support staff as the ‘Exchange’ Lions recorded four wins from the four grades
for the first time in a number of years. Our A grade in particular has been on
the wrong end of some fearsome losses against Angaston in recent years so their
win was particularly satisfying. Also satisfying was all grades moving into the
top four on Saturday which again has not happened for some time. Now the hard
part is to stay there but anything is possible with hard work and a bit of luck.
Go the Lions.
The
BLGFAs confirmation that the Gawler clubs will be able to field their own
Modified and Mini League teams from 2007 is great news with benefits for
both the clubs and players. It will take some hard work to get it going
but with enthusiasm and co-operation the Lions will be OK.
The
Presidents Luncheon was a great success with many sponsors present and
having a good day. Thanks to all the guests that attended to recognize
the sponsors important contribution. Our guest speaker, Peter Alexander,
was excellent as was the polished compere Doc Kildare – both added a
touch of class. Thanks to the Netball Club for catering and special
thanks to Maria Costa for her legendary lasagna – bellisimo! The Lions
best wishes and thoughts are with the Costa family for their sad loss
last week. The only downer on the week end was the graffiti attack on our
Den and surrounds last Friday night. Lions are requested to make a
special effort to keep an eye on the Den at all hours and to report any
suspicious behavior to the Police.
This week end the ‘Exchange’ Lions travel deep into the heart of enemy
territory when we play the Magpies on their home turf at Tanunda. All
grades with be tough to win but the Lions have nothing to loose. The
players would love your support so why not make the trip and enjoy a
great day of grass roots country sport in the beautiful Barossa Valley.
Afterwards don’t forget the great value meals and drink specials back at
the warm and welcoming Den.
See you on Saturday and

South Australia BL&GFA Footy! Part of In the Lions Den from President
Percey! "Its all positive at the Den as the ‘Exchange’
Lions enjoyed four wins out of five last week end against arch rivals
Gawler Centrals. Congratulations to our young A grade as they became the
first South team to retain the ‘Tom Symes’ Cup. The win was also
significant as it was against a top four team, was our first win at
Gawler Oval for many years and a complete turn around from 12 months ago
when our undermanned team was kicked off the park. The win was a morale
boost for the workers at the club who are working so hard to make the
club a respected, competitive unit on and off the field. Thanks to all
the supporters who endured the wintery conditions and especially the
vocal band of juniors on the fence.
The
Reserves endured the worst conditions of the day but after a tense start
powered to a fine win. Again a significant win against a top four team
and the first time we have beaten Centrals twice in a season for many
years. The undermanned Under 17s battled hard and were well beaten but if
they keep working success is not too far away. Despite the rotation
policy it was business as usual for the Under 15s as they cruised to a
big win. Lions are encouraged to get up early to see the young Lions who
look to be in good shape to defend their premiership.
It is
hoped all young players witnessed the fine exhibition of vintage football
at half time of the A grade during the Past Players match. Superbly
captained/ coached by Gary McCollum the heritage Lions cruised to a big
win that obviously inspired the A grade. It was good fun, played in fine
spirit and would be great it if becomes a feature of the ‘Tom Symes’ Cup
days – perhaps for another cup.
In short
it was a classic day of country sport played in true winter conditions in
great spirit by both clubs." President Percey

Especially my Aussie Mates might enjoy my Chris Pronger NHL
Hockey report today. It's a Big story over here and it is very funny to
us Aussies. I reference my time at the South Gawler Lions in this report.

From the recent Kelowna Challenge
weekend (refer below), Vancouver Cougars longtime Champ Doug Vargo who bagged 5
majors last weekend against the Burnaby Eagles is in pursuit of Calgar Kangaroos new Champ Brad Copeland the former AFL Western Bulldog
and SANFL Sturt player.
In the absence of Troy Rose the
Calgary Kangaroo's coach who is away in Costa Rico surfing with Judgey and
Ritchie two other Roo's, former Western Bulldog Brad Copeland took charge of the
Roo's training in 30 degree heat last night. It was a amazing great night as we
had many newcomer CDN's attend their 1st ever Aussie Rules Footy training along
with some new Aussie guys as well. I bet it was the most newcomers to ever
attend a Roo's training in one night.
A noticeable non attendee (to me) was Burnaby Eagles coach Chris Freeman who did
advise me on Monday night that he would come and train with us seeing he is
working this week in Calgary Kangaroo Land.
