After receiving a narrow loss to the West Coast Saints last round the Vancouver Australian Football Team overcame all obstacles today to run out clear victors against the Burnaby Eagles.  Final score 11.11.77 VAFC defeating 2.6.18 BAFC

Playing at the new ground location of Newton, Surrey under overcast conditions rookie first year Coach Brad Jorgensen mustered up some coaching finesse to make sure the entire Cougar player group welded together and played at their true potential.  Brian Kelly, Brad Jorgensen and Jay Abbott started on the ball and immediately developed a strong attacking force.  With Ryan Carrucan and Hurley attacking off the half forward line and Sam Stevens shifted to Full Forward the Cougars looked strong in attack - albeit a little off target!  The first quarter was a close encounter with the Eagles keen to thwart any Cougar momentum.  Brenton Short and Ashley Steier combined well across  half back limiting the Eagles chances.  At the close of the first quarter VAFC 3.3.21 to BAFC 2.0.12.

A quarter time analysis of the Cougars strengths/weaknesses witnessed a change of Grills to CHF and Edmonds to FF. Dusty Castallerin and Chris Harrison battled hard at the ball and backline veteran Tony Cooper helped curb Eagles attacks. ISSC import Wayne Murray proved his Gaelic skills ably assisted his efforts on the footy field.  Kevin Tolme, Jordan Milne and Matt Payne also threw their bodies on the line throughout the entire game.  Jay Abbott was unstoppable and enjoyed the dryer conditions attempting several spectacular marks.  However it was the leadership from the enthusiastic James Warfe (Game day Captain) that really set the tone of the game for the Cougars - playing across the half back line Warfe repelled many Eagles kicks and rebounded the ball with real consistency and vigor.  Kicking into a slight head wind the Cougars closed the half 5.6.36 to BAFC 2.1.12.

The half time change witnessed a slight resurgence from the Eagles but once again the Cougars freshman brigade took up the challenge.  Playing disciplined footy Matt Dube, Tim Cipolloni, Jack Tse, Jack Thompson and Les Ketchell showed that they could handle the increased pressure!  Matt Harrison snagged a brilliant goal from 40 metres adding to the VAFC lead.  Kevin Tolme was regaining his skills/experience after being away from the game for many years!  Three quarter time 8.8.56 VAFC to 2.4.16 BAFC. 

The conditions late in the game provided little favor for either end. The Cougars kicking into what was a head wind now had an opportunity to showcase their game fitness.  While the Eagles never said die it became apparent that the long game was taking its toll.  Frank Murphy and Rory O'Maley worked hard to win the ball and Brian Kelly continued his domination of the ruck contests.  Brad Jorgensen turned up his work rate and snagged a nice goal.  Frustration for the Eagles surrounded the smaller Cougar running players.  Robert Edmonds provided a solid target up forward - beaming with pride when assisting his team mates.  Liam Dib and Clayton Lund also contributed well interchanging from the sidelines.  But overall it was an excellent team effort from the Cougars which helped them secure a final score of 11.11.77 defeating the Eagles 2.6.18.

A special word of thanks goes out to the spectators that came out to offer support. There were many WC Saints players on hand to help with water, being runners, and simply encouraging the players and that was truly a great thing! The stage is set for a great third game for the NWPAFL season as the Cougars sit lofty atop the ladder with a notable percentage.  All players should be proud of the way the team developed and the spirit in which they played the game.

The Cougars headed back to the Eagles main sponsor the Hop and Vine Pub and enjoyed some great food, cold drinks and many stories! Next Game - Burnaby Eagles versus West Coast Saints!  Stay tuned!!

Canadian Northwind forward Scott Fleming playing in Queensland.
This report from Scott came to me earlirt this week via the Vancouver Cougars. Scott is playing this year in Queensland to improve his footy in readiness for the International Cup of Australian Rules Football in Melbourne in August. Scott is a current member of the Canadian Northwind team

"I traveled to Brisbane on Saturday and played my first game for the reserve team against a team called Zillmere. Unfortunately I woke up that morning not feeling very good at all, I think it was a little to do with nerves and just not feeling good. We got beat pretty bad and finished the game two men short due to injuries. I played the whole game and played a bunch of different positions. I started out at centre-half back, moved in to the ruck in the second quarter and finished the game at centre half forward. I had a few good marks and my kicking was pretty good but I missed my one attempt on goal. The senior team played right after us and were leading up until the last ten minutes when they gave up a couple of goals to lose by a couple of points. I told the coach after the game that I had been under the weather since the night before, he thought I did fairly well for my first game and for not feeling well.

This week we are training on Tuesday and Thursday nights and I got in a weight workout today, Wednesday. I have another game with the reserves on Saturday at Broadbeach. I know I will play better now that the first game jitters are gone and I am feeling 100%. Next week, between the U-18's and the senior team I will have four hard training sessions from Monday to Thursday nights. The regular season starts in two weeks and the coaches are pushing hard so we are ready to go. Broadbeach just paid $2,000 dollars for a player from Southport. He was a state U-18 player a couple of years ago and played in the senior Grand Final last year for Southport. I was talking to one of our senior team members who is an ex AFL player with Adelaide. He gets a $1,000 per game to play for Broadbeach. He is the  highest paid player in the Queensland AFL." Scott

Talking AFL on The Jim Rome show on Easter Friday!
Wow! This was big yesterday. I mentioned Aussie Rules Football several times on The Jim Rome Show including saying NFL is the equal best game in the World along with Aussie Rules Football. I talked about how Darren Bennett changed the NFL the way NFL punters now punt using the Aussie Rules Footy drop punt when they need to land the ball inside the 20 yard line. I also talked about Aussies Mat McBriar, Ben Graham and Sav Rocca currently punting in the NFL along with how the Pittsburg Steelers punter Daniel Sepulveda who is from the USA learnt and effectively uses the Aussie drop punt.

I believe Jim Rome has about 5 million listeners daily. He is the biggest sports radio guy in USA with his show going to many USA markets. Many places in Canada also carry his daily 3 hour sports radio show. I met Jim Rome at the Super Bowl Media centres in 03 and 04 and thus I believe this is a reason why I got through and thus got on his very popular sports radio show yesterday. Next time I need to slow down a bit and realize that the large USA audience is not used to my Aussie accent. I tend to get very excitable and passionate when I talk sports on USA and CDN radio especially when I talk about Aussie Rules Footy.

I just subscribed to his online pod cast to re listen and I was on for 3 minutes without him interrupting at all. He bagged me a bit after the 3 minutes saying "I didn't understand Myk, I heard about Brett Favre and Darren Bennett." but then he said "No Myk I did understand you. That was Myk for 3, 5, 8 minutes however long that was and yes we do see Myk down at Super Bowl's in the Media Centre. That was Myk Aussie in Calgary". Wow! This was great. I was real happy to watch this today on YouTube.com from here in Canada as KISS were a legend band when I grew up on Australia. From Sat March 8, 2008. The St Kilda Saints defeated the Adelaide Crows 2.7.9 (69) to 0.9.10 (64) in front of 26,823 fans in Adelaide to win the NAB (preseason) Cup!
For those not recognizing the different format of score it includes super goals in the preseason cup. The 2 means St Kilda kicked 2 goals from outside the 50 metre line and thus these are 9 points. They kicked 7 goals as per normal while the 9 points as per usual.

"The Dog" a legend caller from Montreal on Sports Rage Sirius Satellite radio Friday night was talking about this and in a way saying to me that we are a bit screwed up in Aussie. He talked about this question below from the AFL article on radio.

My advice to Aussie's and especially Aussie Footy players whether in Australia or say here in Western Canada on the question above is this. The very 1st thing to find out after you introduce yourself is to find out if she is Married. If she is then B is the correct answer. A is not the correct answer because if she is married she shouldn't be in the Bar drunk in the 1st place or you need to get away from her where ever you are. Get her out of there as fast as you can. "On behalf of the South Gawler Football club welcome to 2008. With a bit of luck it could be a good year. The Club never stops and thanks to Damien Herzick, Matt Trimboli, Kellie Harriss, Wilbur Rolton and Jeff Keating amongst others for their much appreciated work for our club over the summer.

The senior grades are now training every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm at the Den. All players need to start training as soon as possible to lay a solid base for the season. New players are particularly welcome. Any players or members with any senior football issues can contact Matt Trimboli on 0414 390 300.The bar is open Thursday nights and all Lions are invited to support the club and give the players some helpful ‘advice’.

The Under 17s will start official training shortly but are encouraged to join the senior squad where they will warmly welcomed.
Pre-season training for the Under 15s is every Tuesday and Thursday from now on commencing at 5pm. The highly organized and experienced coach Grant O’Reilly invites all players to train. He advises running shoes and proper training attire including shorts without pockets is required.

The Little League and Modified teams will start training on Thursday March 6 from 4pm. Again any players who can’t wait are welcome to train with the Under 15s. Any players or members with any junior football issues can contact Peter Reichstein on 0402 113 896.

Qualified coaches and trainers are in attendance at all training sessions where player safety and development is always a priority. Spread the word – the season has started and the Lions need your support now!" Jim Callander

Updated Thurs Jan 24, 08. Australia Day/Night Jan 26 in Calgary with the Calgary Kangaroos, Bears and Kookaburras!
If you are in or near Calgary I hope you can come and join the Calgary Kangaroos, Bears and Kookaburras which is the Cwoc ladies team for Australia Day/Saturday night Jan 26th at Dickens Pub in downtown Calgary. Last year was a great night as we packed out the largish Sports Bar. There will be a band playing, Aussie Beer specials, a Aussie raffle including Aussie wines, Vegemite and Bundy. It should again be a huge night.

The 2 Brad's are back! Brad Flower will again be a Calgary Kangaroo in 08! Brad Copeland could again be a Calgary Bear in 08! A Bigger year is planned in 08 for Alberta Footy!
This is great news. I heard last night at the AB Footy 2nd committee meeting of the year that Brad Flower will be arriving back in Calgary from Australia in February to again be a Calgary Kangaroo in 08. It is believed Brad will also be taking on a coaching role for the Calgary Kangaroos and Bears on Wednesday nights and for the Kangaroos on game days. If this works out current AB Footy coach Troy Rose will be letting Brad take a lot more control of training and coaching through out the year..

It was great to see Brad Copeland the former Footscray Bulldog in attendance last night. It is rumored that Copes will be playing some games in 08 after work commitments caused a early exit 1/2 way through the 07 season. Copes who was the 1st ever Calgary Bears coach in 07 and a star for the Calgary Kangaroos/Bears combined side on road trips.

From Sat, Jan 12 On Wednesday night we had the 1st committee meeting of 08 for the Calgary Kangaroos and the Calgary Bears. 07 was the 1st year that we formed the Calgary Bears and we look forward to having more games in 08. So if you are living in or near Calgary or if you are coming to Calgary in 08 please feel free to contact me myk@mykaussie.com about playing our great game in 08. We have had good numbers of Canadians/non Aussies playing in recent years and we are particularly keen to welcome new Canadians/non Aussies to play. We train Wednesday nights at Riley Park in Calgary and then socialize afterwards. In addition to the Roos vs Bears games we will again also be hosting the Stampede Cup on the last Saturday of the Calgary Stampede, playing in the BC Footy Cup in Vancouver, the Kelowna Challenge and attending the US Nationals in Colorado in October. We also play the Irish guys here in Calgary in Gaelic Footy. The newly formed in 07 Calgary Kookaburras ladies team are looking to having a bigger year in 07 after what was a great 1st year for the Cwoc and Aussie Bird ladies.

From Dec 28, 07. A very possible 5 team competition in BC Canada in 08!
I recently heard that BC Footy, British Columbia Canada is expanding into quite possibly a 5 team competition in 2008. The existing Vancouver Cougars and Burnaby Eagles will again be at each other while the Seattle Grizzles will be playing many more games in Vancouver. I also heard that the Victoria Lions will be reformed and several Vancouver based 07 players have committed to the Lions in 08. These 4 teams will very possibly be joined by a 3rd Vancouver based team called the South Vancouver Saints. The Saints will include many players coming out of the excellent BC Footy Junior competition. This is great news. The 08 NWPAFL, North West Pacific AFL Grand Final could thus be played between any of these teams. For MYKwebTV of the 05 NWPAFL Grand Final Click here
