has a long history in Mexico. And Arizona’s Rolando Cantuis the first Mexican
born player, who played at a Mexican University, to be on an NFL team roster (he
has been on the practice squad of the redbirds since the ’04 NFL season. He
stood on the sidelines for the Cardinals win over the hapless San Francisco
49ers two weekends ago, Sunday.
Cantu was a national
starter for the NFL E Champ Berlin Thunder in ’04, winning the NFL ‘AAA’
Championship (i.e., half a Super Bowl).
He played at three time Mexican University Champs Univ. of Monterrey, the city
that the Montreal / Puerto Rico Expos almost moved to several years ago.

nine Mexicali NFL Euro players

NFL Europe Final(?) 2005 Season / Championship and NFL Update
Yesterday the Amsterdam Admirals won their first ever NFL Euro 'World' Bowl,
27-21, in Dusseldorf, Germany, over the defending Champ Berlin Thunder. The
Admirals hadn't been in the World Bowl since they lost to Vern Hippler's
Frankfurt Galaxy, 26-22, IN 1995. Darren Bennett, among others, was on the
9-2-0 Admirals that lost that game, at home. Jackie Kellogg, former Arena
Leaguer, and future CFL star was on that Frankfurt team as well. The fourth
smallest crowd in World Bowl history, 35,000+ cramed into UTL Stadium (Arena)
to watch Berlin make a furious comeback, noly to have QB Dave Ragone (3rd
string-Texans) pass fall incomplete in the end zone, as time expired. Berlin
had been 4-0 in World Bowls before losing this game and was favored by three
points coming in.
I predicted, on Gabriel Morency's Sportsrage show, Friday, 1:35 in the a.m.
that Amsterdam would win by a TD, which they barely covered, by six points.
Game Balls to:
1) Jarrett Payton, RB, (Titans), Amstrerdam, son of Legendary Walt
Payton, the greatest RB in the history of Pro Football,
2) Kurt Kittner, QB, (Bears), Amsterdam,
3) Both Defencive Coordinators; Darryl Sims, Amsterdam, a former NFL player,
and
4) Jim Tomsula, Berlin, and
5) Tie; two Kansas City Chiefs - WR Joe Booth, another Chris Horn / Marc
Boerighter clone and RB, Joe Smith.
Amsterdam lead throughtout and made it tough on Ragone with six sacks. But
after spotting the Admirals 17 unanswered points, the Thunder came back to
score on Carolina WR Aaron Boone's TD before the half. Berlin held Amsterdam
scoreless for 13 minutes in the second half and got the ball last only to
drive 91 yards and fall short - by one pass, as time expired.
Updated Record of all six NFL E franchises, in World Bowls:
1) Amsterdam, 1-2. 2) Berlin, 4-1. 3) Cologne, 1-1. 4) Frankfurt, 3-3. 5)
Hamburg, 2-3. 6) Rhein, 2-3.
Coach Bart Andrus of Amsterdam is now 1-0. Berlin Coach, Rick Lantz, formerly
Defencive Coordinator of the University of Virginia, is 1-1, in his first two
years in the League as H.Coach. Chief's Gen. Manager Carl Peterson, made his
annual pilgrimage to Europe to hype the League and the vote will be close to
renew NFL E again, this Sept. Atlanta Owner Art Blank, 94% Owner of the Georgia
Force of the Arena League, who will play, one-and-a-half hours from now, in
ArenaBowl XIX, for one, along with five other NFL Owners, who own Arena League
teams, is not a fan of the League and made some interesting comments in the USA
Today's Friday Sports edition, which were reported by USA Today columnist, Larry
Wiesman.
The
six NFL teams that Own or partially own Ar.FL teams are the ones who do not send
players to the NFL 'AAA's in Europe. Only 26 of the NFL teams have sent players
to NFL E the last two years. Callers in to the game included Mike Sherman, Green
Bay Coach, Kurt Warner, who played in both the Ar.FL and NFL E, and Philly K
Dave Akers, who also played in both the Ar.FL (Carolina) and NFLE. Amsterdam
'Chiefs' have impact; Five Kansas City Chiefs played in the game, four for
victorious Admirals; S Tom Connot, RB Joe Smith, 3rd QB Casey Claussen and WR
Joe Booth. Another, LB Rich Scanlon, a Mike Maslowski type, played for Berlin
and was Defencive Player of the Year. He lead the League in tackles every game
and in the World Bowl, too." Moose

From Moose "NFL Euro World Bowl XIII Saturday, June 11th; Amsterdam v. Berlin
So long Pete Vaas, Coach of the Cologne Centurians. He retires from
NFL Europe after six years as H.Coach of either Berlin (formerly London),
who he lead to two NFL E Bowl Championships, or Cologne (formerly Scotland).
Vaas record in NFL Europe was 31-31 with two Championships.
Vaas will report to South Bend, Ind. to join the NCAA staff of the Notre
Dame Fightin' (non?) Irish. He was called last week by ex-New England
Patriots Offensive Coordinator, now Notre Dame Coach, Charlie Weis.
Also; Goodbye Vern Hippler? The German-born, Canadian-raised TE,
who played for Vaas the last two years, may also mull retirement in
the offseason. He set one NFL E alltime record this year; well, really
two. Most games in NFL E career; 88, tying former Scotland Claymore
WR, Scott 'Scoups' Couper. He also has played more games in NFL E
history than any other TE. He also has more catches in NFL E history
than another TE in NFL E history with 88, for 998 yards and 4 TDs.
(Three receiving and 1 run)

1,000-yard hero Smith scoops offensive prize; Playmaking defensive linemen
also rewarded
RHEIN Fire 1,000-yard rushing hero JOE SMITH has been named Offensive Player
of Week 10 after he led his club to a season-ending defeat of the Amsterdam
Admirals.
Smith, allocated to NFL Europe by the Tennessee Titans, rushed for 134 yards
on 34 carries, scoring on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Those figures saw Smith become just the third player in NFLEL history to top
1,000 rushing yards in a season, joining Mike Green (Barcelona 2001) and
Lawrence Phillips (Barcelona 1999).
Smith ended the regular season with 1,026 yards and 5 touchdowns on 223
carries despite missing one game with a knee injury (at Hamburg in Week 3).
That yardage total ranks second in NFLEL history behind Green’s 1,057 in
2001. Smith set a new league record with six 100-yard rushing days in 2005.
Smith says: “It’s a great feeling to get into the record books. I got the
ball as a trophy tonight. It’s really great going out with a win. It’s just
a real good feeling.”
A pair of defensive linemen were named Defensive and Special Teams Players
of the Week.
Cologne Centurions defensive end GREG WHITE (Chicago Bears) was named
Defensive Player of Week 10 after he recorded 3 sacks for 33 yards in his
team’s 17-13 defeat of the Berlin Thunder.
White also recorded 8 tackles and ended the regular season with 34 stops, 1
forced fumble and a league-leading 7 sacks for 56 yards.
