Left: Here interviewing AFL Legend Kevin Sheedy at the 07 US Nationals. The MYKwebTV and YouTube.com link to this TV show is below. Why do I keep showing this picture and promoting this interview? Well it's simple. It's one of the greatest moments I've had in the past 8+ years reporting on many sports from Western Canada. Aussie Footy is well into the 08 season in Canada and Kevin Sheedy is huge advocate of overseas Australian Rules Football. 2nd from left: Gareth Williams a CDN Northwind member getting another kick for the Calgary Bears in game 3 of the Bears vs Kangaroos 08 series. Note: I said it "was" a pleasure to play with Brad Flower at the Calgary Kangaroos the past 2 years. "Was" is the key word. From July 4. The 08 Stampede Cup is this Saturday at the Saints Rugby Fields in Calgary's NE! South Gawler Lions Under 13's win under lights at Lyndoch! Part of In the Lions Den 2/7/08 from President Percey
"With the bye the only team representing the Lions last weekend was Adams Fabrication Under 13s who played under lights on Friday at Lyndoch. They had an exciting match against a tough team and recorded a good win. These guys and their families, together with the Under 11s, are one the best things to happen to the Lions over the past few years. They are developing every week, play a good brand of footy, have fun and conduct themselves enthusiastically and properly on and off the field at all time.

Well done to all involved including Chairman of Selectors Andrew Ortlepp, Team Manager Sandy Brennan and Skills Coach Robert Erriggo. Thanks also to the Junior Ambassadors and Lion Legends in Aaron Bevis, Graham Schultz and Eddie Schwerdt who pass on good tips and words of wisdom to the boys. Lions should do themselves a favour and make an effort to watch the excitement machines in action from 8.30am on Saturdays.

This Saturday the Lions host the Barossa Bulldogs. Again it will be a good day of sport. It will be yet another huge day for Herzicks Heroes in the A grade who have every thing to play for. Why not come and support our team as they defy the odds? The Lions won last time and there is no reason we can’t win again – wouldn’t that stick it the knockers!
Go the Lions – you can do it (again)!" Jim Callender

The Calgary Kangaroos defeat the Calgary Bears convincingly in the 3rd clash of the 08 season.
The game was played at the Saints Rugby fields in Calgary's NE. In windy and hot conditions the Kangaroos won convincingly. There were many great efforts especially by some of the new Canadian players. Also the guys that played on the ball had to run all day with few changes. This is again great news to play at the Saints field as we get to play across 2 rugby fields thus a full size Australian Rules Football field.

Vancouver Cougars BC Footy has success at the Portland Tournament!
From Mr BC Footy Stuart Grills. "The combined team from BAFC (Eagles), WCAFL (Saints) and VAFC (Cougars) represented their clubs well over the weekend at the historic, first ever, Portland Invitational tournament!  The BCfooty team won against Portland, lost narrowly to Seattle and battled hard against Denver!  Not a bad effort for a group of players that had never played together before. Special thanks goes to all the players that made the effort to go to Portland!  Thanks also to the wives, girlfriends, family and mates that made the trip down to offer support!  Great weekend and will be definitely a regular for the seasons ahead. Also important to note that Portland are very keen top attend our BC Footy Cup and will be sending as many players as possible to our event! Thanks to Portland for organizing such a great tournament , great first up effort. " Stuart Grills

Mark "Flash" Block the Northwind Canada coach was a recent special guest on the new Ontario Australian Football League Footy Feast TV show!
On returning to Calgary on Sunday night I straight away with interest watched the 4th Episode of the new Footy Feast TV show. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Mark "Flash" Block the coach of the Canadian Northwind team. I also got to see some highlights from several OAFL games along with much more in this new in 08 production. I believe there will be some footage from the Kelowna Cup in a upcoming episode. This TV show on the Internet was started up this year by Marty Walter. Marty was also at the Kelowna Cup on Saturday. Kelowna media have already reported on Saturdays event!
I heard to today from Dirtman at Power 104 FM radio that Pat Kennedy the Sports reporter from CHBC TV did a report on Tuesday night talking about the Kelowna Cup. More media reports have been planned including Power 104 on location on Saturday while today I did a interview with Ron Mann for CKOV sports radio. I also believe the Daily Courier newspaper will be running a story.

The Kelowna Cup is a unique event in the fact that we split into Alberta Canadian/Non Aussies vs British Columbia Canadians/Non Aussies and then Alberta Aussies vs British Columbia Aussies. Thus its Canadians/Non Australians playing each other and then Aussies vs Aussies.

This week Mark "Flash" Block selected 25 Canadian Northwind Ontario based players for the upcoming International Cup 2008 to be played in Melbourne. He will be looking to add 7 more to this squad some of which will come from the Canadian/Non Australian British Columbia and Alberta based players. The Calgary Kangaroos defeat the Calgary Bears in the 2nd game of the 08 season!
In possibly the best ever Roo's vs Bears game the Roo's 10.13 = 73 points defeated the Bears 10.4 = 64.

From Sat May 31. The Calgary Bears welcome back a former star for one last game! Game 2 between the Calgary Kangaroos and the Calgary Bears is this Saturday as we prepare for the 08 Canadian Kelowna Cup!
I have heard the rumor that the Calgary Bears will be strengthened significantly for todays game 2 in the Bears vs Ross clash by the return of former AFL Bulldog Brad Copeland.

Know as Copes, Brad played for the Alberta Roos in the 05 Stampede Cup against the BC Cougars/Eagles but suffered a hamstring injury. Brad then won the Alberta Footy Bears/Roos Best and Fairest in 06. In 07 Brad started the year as the playing coach for the Calgary Bears. This did not last and Brad has unfortunately hardly been seen at the footy since.

I believe Brad will today be playing one last game for the Bears as within weeks he will be returning to live in Australia after approximately ten years living in Calgary. I rate Brad as one of the very best players to have ever played Aussie Footy in Western Canada. A very passionate guy, hard at the ball but also a fair player. Brad has been a very successful Engineering Manager in the Oil and Gas field in Calgary. If Brad can avoid muscle injuries today the Calgary Kangaroos could be in trouble and go down 2-0 against the Bears. Brad will be remembered as one of the best guys on and off the field to have played footy in Alberta. You can see me interview Brad talking footy in this Gaelic footy TV show, Pt 2

From Thurs May 29. The Calgary Bears defeat the Calgary Kangaroos in the 1st game of the 08 season! The final score was the Bears 8.12 = 60 to the Kangaroos 7.8 = 50.  Game 2 is this Saturday as we prepare for the 08 Canadian Kelowna Cup!
On a very wet night in Calgary the Calgary Bears defeated the Calgary Kangaroos by 10 points at the Saints Rugby fields. Despite the very wet conditions, shall I say Vancouver or Melbourne winter type weather it was a good and much needed match as we prepare to take on the Vancouver teams in Kelowna on June 7. Many of the new Canadian guys seemed to really enjoy the game. I look forward to this weeks game as we prepare for the 08 Canadian Kelowna Cup on June 7 where we will take on the BC Eagles and Cougars.

Talking AFL footy to a massive USA and CDN audience on very popular Jim Rome show. Listen now for Free!
On Easter Friday I was lucky to get on The Jim Rome show. Jim has a syndicated sports radio show to many cities in the USA and several in Canada. It is believed he has a audience of several million daily listening to his 3 hr sports radio show. I met Jim in the Super Bowl Media centre during the Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego. I believed this helped in getting through and on this great sports show. I have now added what I said to my YouTube/com Directors Channel. I talked Aussie Footy relating to the NFL in the 3 minute call.

Western Canadian Footy, the Burnaby Eagles defeat the Vancouver Cougars! A report from Mr BC Footy Stewy Grills!
I had a call from Eagles player and former coach Chris Freeman today saying that the Eagles defeated the Cougars on Friday night by 11 points.

From Stewy Grills of the Vancouver Cougars. "Friday's nights NWPAFL game was played under brilliant football conditions of a setting sun and a gentle breeze and the stage was set for some spectacular plays. A tight game ensued and the ball literally swung from each end of the ground in a fast paced manner. The Eagles ended up out shooting the gallant Cougars 18 shots to 12 but the score was much more reflective of the true battle.

Last year with some advise from Kev in South Australia I/we came 110 out of 207,431 on the afl.com.au tipping. We had a average Rd 7 tipping 5 out of 8. We are now on 42, 3 behind the leaders Mr BC Footy Stuart Grills and Phantom in the Vancouver Cougars/Burnaby Eagles footytips.com.au competition.

The Ottawa Swans get a nice welcome in their 1st ever game in the OAFL, Ontario Australian Football League in Canada!
On Saturday the Ottawa Swans played their 1st ever official game in the OAFL. After forming the club in 07 and playing some games against teams in and around Toronto the Swans were this year accepted into the OAFL which is one of the largest competitions outside of Australia. In the OAFL only 6 Australians are allowed on the field at any one time which is less than in most leagues outside of Australia where it is 50-50 thus 9 Australians and 9 non Australians on the field at once.

In their 1st game on Saturday the score was Etobicoke Kangaroos 21.12 = 138 to the Ottawa Swans 5.4 = 34. My Swans mate Spud said today "We definitely played better than the score says. It was a tough game and they are pretty sore I would say. We should push a few teams this year."

Spud could well be right there as the
Etobicoke Kangaroos finished minor premiers in 07 but were beaten in the Grand Final by the Toronto Eagles. For the Ottawa Swans site Click here

South Gawler Football Club – In the Lions Den from President Percey.
Congratulations to the Sterling Homes Under 15s and G Trak Reserves who were the only successful South Gawler footballers last week end. Special congratulations to Simon Heads Heroes in the Reserves who fought their way to a character filled win. Congratulations to Josh Vermeeren who made his long awaited A Grade debut last week end and was amongst the best players – Josh is a very exciting prospect. Congratulations to Gawler Centrals A grade who regained the “Tom Symes’ Cup fairly and squarely. Thanks to Central Districts for hosting the Denron Metal Lions at their oval – despite the loss it was a memorable experience.

This week the Lions host Kapunda at home in all grades. The assistance of volunteers is requested to make the day a success which starts at 8.30am when the Under 13s kick off. The Players Auction of A grade footballers and netballers will be held this Saturday night – it’s a great chance to make some easy money and support our club.

Make a date for May 31 for Junior night at the Den when the club opens its doors to the most enthusiastic Lions of all. The following day is ‘Retro Sunday’ hosted by Garry Hurst and the Life Members. The classic days of the old Den by the river will be recreated and a fun time is guaranteed. Have you seen the new ‘Blue and White’ Rag – it is fantastic so please give the new ‘Eddy Tor’ Kellie Harriss a big pat on the back for her voluntary work.

This week the A grade in particular face a real test. They have come forward in many ways this year and all young teams have their ups and downs. How will the players respond? What they do need is the support of all Lions – please make the effort to get to the Den this weekend and to support loudly, positively and proudly. Go the Lions!" President Percey

The 08 Canadian Kelowna Cup is June 7!
This event is not far away and the Calgary Kangaroos and Bears are now full into training for this event and also the Roos vs Bears games starting on May 24. Outdoor training only started here in Calgary a few weeks ago due to crazy weather this time of year. The BC Footy guys have already played several games and no doubt will be taking a strong line up to Kelowna. This event is unique in the fact that we split into Alberta Canadian/Non Aussies vs British Columbia Canadians/Non Aussies and then Alberta Aussies vs British Columbia Aussies.   vs

NWPAFL, North West Pacific AFL, Western Canada. The West Coast Saints 8.9 = 57  defeated the Burnaby Eagles 2.4 = 16. A detailed match report from The Whisper!
After what can only be described as the most unprecedented weather the lower mainland has seen for decades the sun emerged from behind the clouds and melted the snow that early morning blanketed the UBC Sports fields!  The crowd were gathering and although waiting for a weather delayed start endured the relatively frigid temperature. 2.30pm April 19th witnessed the third round of the NWPAFL Season. With the Saints relishing the top position on the ladder and the Eagles desperate to climb out of the bottom rung the game was certain to be a ripper.

The first quarter started in true west coast style - umpire Brian Horan electing to throw the ball skyward to avoid the wet and slippery ground. Immediately Dale Handley and the Eagles centre players demonstrated that they were ready to play footy!  However, Saints Mike Lancaster and Craig Hopkins quickly started to gain possessions throughout the midfield thwarting the Eagles surges forward.  At the 5 minute mark the ball was deep in the  Saints forward line and silky skilled Craig hopkins snapped for a major. The rest of the quarter was deadlocked with the Eagles veteran Peter Taylor showing he was well rested during the preseason. Taylor finished the quarter with 7 kicks, 4 Handballs and 3 Marks - setting the stage for a possible BOG performance. Late in the quarter Mike Lancaster kicked the second goal for the Saints from just on 50m and Saint's newbie Lachlan "Locky" Scott snagged a great goal less than 2 minutes later. Brad Teasdale was having a great game throughout the middle and was ably assisted by the veteran Bonney across the back line!

Q1   Saints 3.2 = 20   v  Eagles 0.1 = 1

Kicking with the wind in the second quarter the Eagles had many more attacking opportunities, but players such as Ward Frost and Ryan McGrath for the Saints showed some amazing form across the half and full back lines. Clayton Holmes had a spectacular second quarter proving that his inclusion in the Canadian Northwind contingent will be fruitful!  Big hits were a major component of this battle with the Eagles' Plugger the recipient of a great hip and shoulder. This was followed by Peter Taylor's bone crunching hip and shoulder on Gareth "Chip" Bowley. As Chip ran forward toward the "Mahony and Sons Wing" Taylor executed the best body check to be witnessed this season.  A more perfect hit could not have been delivered and true to Taylor's sportsmanlike approach was completely within the bounds of the rules. Credit to Bowley for bouncing back up and staying in the game!  The quarter was a war of attrition with both sides unable to register a major score till well into the 18 minute mark when lofty Ryan Martin snagged a wonderful goal for the Saints. Under Saint coach Scott Sheen's skilful tutelage the Saints were able to completely nullify many skilful Eagles players including Adam Cole who remained without a kick for the quarter until the dying minutes.  Cole received a great forward delivery and received the kick 30 meters out from goal.  It has to be said the conditions were paying the toll and kicking a very water soaked ball Cole missed.  Had he scored a major the quarter would have been a wash on the score board.

Q2   Saints 4.3 = 27  v Eagles 0.3 = 3

The wind was still playing a role in the third quarter and the Saints had a definitive breeze advantage early on. It only took 3 minutes for the ball to be locked in the Saints forward pocket. David Miller performed a mesmerizing arc and snapped to Matt "Ringadingding" Sutherland who marked and goaled. But the Eagles were inspired by their leadership group and forced the ball northward time and again. Frustrating the Saints defense paid off when Eagle Randy Dicken marked and then was awarded a 50m penalty in the pocket.  Kicking truly Randy scored the BAFC's first goal of the game. The centre bounce was hard fought with the Saints rock Ward Frost battling for the ball. The free ball was corralled in centre field before a break out play allowed speedy Mike Lancaster to snap a great goal!  Not to be outdone in the seesaw 3rd quarter the Eagles pushed forward through Adam Cole who kicked long to goal on the 12 minute mark. Unfortunately for the game tensions rose and the game became tangled in a messy melee. Players from both teams lost their cool and composure and Umpires Horan and Stratford were forced to yellow card.  Lancaster (WCSAFC) and Roger (BAFC) were ejected before a frustrated Dale Wakefield (BAFC) was also carded for unduly rough play.  Credit to the umpires for restoring professionalism to the game and after a short delay a ball up ensued!  Late in the quarter Chip Bowley kicked the WCSAFC final goal of the quarter.

Q3   Saints 7.5 = 47  v Eagles 2.3 = 15

The final quarter witnessed the traditional calm that the UBC field often effects late in the afternoon. With the wind non existent and the ground considerably dryer the speed of the game was more pronounced. Big Saint forward Matt Sutherland marked truly in the forward line after receiving a long bomb from James Maitland. He quickly passed to Lachlan Scott who set up and missed. The Saints peppered the goals throughout the final term with little success. The Eagles also found it hard to goal as Adam Cole again missed an opportunity from inside 50m. While the game result was perhaps out of contention the standard of play was not waning. Both teams battled hard throughout the last quarter and it was not till the 18 minute mark that speedy Peter Campion was able to receive a running pass, mark and proceed to power toward goal and shoot successfully!

Final score; Saints 8.9 = 57  defeating the Eagles 2.4 = 16.

Goals;
Saints - Lancaster 2, Bowley 1, Campion 1, Hopkins 1, Martin 1, Scott 1, Sutherland 1

Eagles - Cole 1, Dicken 1

Best; Saints - from Frost, Maitland, Holmes, Lancaster, Hopkins, McGrath, Teasdale

Umpires - Brian Horan, Jason Stratford
Conditions - wet and cold to start, finishing with a pretty nice afternoon!" From The Whisper!

BL&GFA, Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association in South Australia. South Gawler Football Club, Part of this weeks In the Lions Den
 from President Percey!
As always any game against Willaston was very willing and competitive and last Saturdays trial match was no exception. It is hard to tell what you can take out of the trial with both clubs experimenting and resting players. The Lions can be happy that they won all games against the Donnybrooks with the A grade showing pleasing character. Hopefully they can continue it into the season which starts for the Lions in round two against Barossa District at Lyndoch. What an excellent challenge for the A grade and it is hoped that they are well supported by the South Gawler faithful.

With the first time bye ( for the first time ever) all Lions are invited to the Den this Friday to watch the senior squad including the Under 17s train. This will be followed by a BBQ tea then a motivational lecture by Alan Stewart and Steven Schwerdt of the Adelaide Crows. South Gawler Supporters of all ages are encouraged to attend to enjoy what should be a interesting night.

This Saturday why not come to the Den where Willaston and Kapunda will be playing both football and netball. The Lions are pleased to help out and hope both clubs have a good day.

The Under 11 and Under 13 teams are now training on Thursdays from 4pm at the Den – everyone is welcome so spread the word at school and beyond.
 ‘Go the Lions’!" President Percey.
