Ryan Gregory in ruck for

compliments of Ottawaswans.com
From the Ottawa Swans
"Ryan 'Razor'
Gregory is a rookie who returned to Ottawa this year after a stint in
England. Eager to find a summer
sport Ryan decided to try out for the Ottawa Swans Australian Rules
Football club. Ryan is a tall lad
(6ft 4in) and apt student who worked hard over the pre season to learn
the finer details of the game. His
ability to provide first use of the ball for the Swans in ruck duels
coupled with his in exhaustive(?!) endurance capacity enabled him to
soundly beat more experienced opposition players as well as run out games
which is no mean feat (on average an AFL game lasts 1hr and 20mins). A
key player for the Swans Ryan Gregory is a modest player who deserves all
the accolades he has achieved this season via awards such as Swans Rookie
of the Year, OAFL Rookie of the Year, OAFL team of the year.
The
Swans wish to thank and celebrate Ryan Gregory on a fine season.
Updated Tues Sept 30. Congratulations to the South Gawler Lions in

South Gawler Lions Reserves and Under 15 in this Saturdays BL&GFA
Grand Final, Sth Australian football!
My good mate Simon Head is coaching the Lions Reserves this Saturday
in the Grand Final. Good luck to the Lions Reserves and also the Under
15's and netballers.
South Gawler Football
Club – Part of In the Lions Den 17/9/08 from President Percey.
You beauty – the G Trak South Gawler Reserves are in the Grand Final!
Congratulations to Simon Head and his heroes who had a character filled
win in the Preliminary Final. This win ensures that the Lions will have a
senior team in the Grand Final for the first time since 1999 when Simon
coached the Reserves to the Premiership. Interestingly they will also be
the only Gawler team in a senior Grand Final in 2008. Well done boys! A
significant step for our club and another sign that the Lions are
continuing to improve.
They
will join the Sterling Homes Under 15s and the netballers who will
represent the Blue and Whites in this years Grand Final. It is hoped they
will have lots of support on Saturday and then back at the Den (from
3.30pm).
The
Under 11s and Under 13s Trophy Night last Friday was a great success and
a credit to the Colts Committee who organized it. The players and their
parents had a fun time in a energy charged atmosphere. Congratulations to
Bradley Bain who won the ‘Aaron Bevis’ Under 13s ‘Best and
Fairest’ Trophy – well done. Congratulations also to Matthew Ortlepp
(Runner-Up Best and Fairest), Thomas Burden (Best Team Man), Alexander
Maggs ( Most Consistent), Tim Cheer (Most Improved), Cohen Mortimer
(Coaches Trophy) and Stephen Van Poorten (Coaches Trophy).
It was excellent to have Yves Sibenaler in attendance. The Lions were
pleased to recognize his significant achievements at CDFC when our
champion Aaron Bevis presented him with a new design South Gawler
guernsey – No 37 of course!
The South Gawler Football Club is pleased to be associated with the
‘Herald’ and its columnists. The Lions compliment the ‘Herald’ on
its balanced, researched and fair journalism and thanks it for its
responsible and full support in the best interests of community sport.
Good luck to all teams in the Grand Final and especially all those in
Blue and White. Lets get right behind two club men in Grant O’Reilly
and Simon Head and support their teams loudly, proudly and positively all
game.

The
Vancouver Cougars defeat the Burnaby Eagles and secure a Grand Final
berth in the NWPAFL, North West Pacific AFL in Western Canada!
From
Whisper "After
a very non eventful 2008 Home and Away Season the Vancouver Cougars have
secured a berth in the much awaited 2008 Grand Final to be played at UBC
rugby fields on September 13, 2008, 2pm.
The
Eagles had the home field advantage at the beautiful Langley Hilton Park
and while all the focus hovered on the much improved BAFC little hope was
given to the VAFC after a horrible performance against the West Coast
Saints on August 22nd. However,
the Cougars were keen to show that their specialized training was going
to pay dividends and from the opening bounce demonstrated that they meant
business.
The
first quarter was heavily dominated by the conscientious Cougars with
many forward thrusts being directed from the centre.
Baz Kelly was in fine form in the Ruck and was ably assisted all
day by his fellow onballers. Matt Harrison had his best performance for the season and contested
with vigor - taking some great marks across the half forward line.
The Eagles were without Cole - missing due to a spider bite.
Tim Cipolloni was elusive up forward and snagged three great goals
in the term with Grills and Carrucan kicking an additional one each. Colin Hilton managed to kick cleanly for the Eagles to secure their
only score.
Q1 VAFC 5.4.34
to BAFC
1.0.6
The second half witnessed a change in setup for the Eagles whereby
several loose players roamed across their half back line.
It did cause some early problems and slowed the pace of the game
considerably. However, the
persistent Cougars pushed forward relentlessly.
Danny Cravino kicked a wonderful goal and Grills popped up for two
more! Chris Harrison was playing
solid footy as were Tyler and Liam.
However, it was the individual effort of Canadian born Matt Dube
given the tagging role on BAFC gun Dale Wakefield that really proved
invaluable. Dube not only kept
Wakefield to limited touches but ensured that every time Wakefield
approached the ball he was corralled and harrassed. Wakefield showed signs of frustration and Dube just would not ease
up. Colin Hilton managed to secure
the Eagles second goal and celebrated in Fevola fashion!
Q2 VAFC 8.6.54
to BAFC 2.0.12
After
the long break the Cougars were instructed to play even harder and
directions from Jorgensen specifically demanded "[sic] the Cougars
be first to the ball in all contested situations".
And Jorgensen's charges did not disappoint.
Craig Hopkins emassed a heap of possessions as did the speedy Ryan
Carrucan. Both players chipping in
to kick a goal a piece in the third.
The Cougars were marking strongly yet it was the clean delivery of
the footy that really helped the cause. Grills
received some great passes up forward and kicked two more goals.
Rob Edmonds was tagged by Matt Bell and allowed an opened up
forward line to result. Brenton
Short and Tony Cooper controlled the back line and with Ashley Steier
running hard it was difficult for the Eagles to move deep into the
forward line. BAFC tall,
Dale Handley battled hard all day and kicked a great goal and Colin
Hilton yet again snagged a major. James
Donkin and Ted Murray contained their opponents and played some great
footy.
Q3
VAFC 13.8.86 to BAFC 4.0.24
Tired
legs were evident as the final term began.
Again the Cougars were instructed to attack the ball hard.
While the Eagles players tried their hardest it was clear that the
Cougars were not prepared to relinquish their first three quarter
efforts. The Eagles managed to
kick three points for the term but the Cougars goal kicking was on fire
ending the quarter with 7 goals and 1 behind.
Tim Cipolloni finished with 5 goals for the day and Grills secured
his best NWPAFL game tally of 7. Hopkins,
Tyler and Baz all kicked majors in the last quarter.
But it was the all round team effort that made this one of the
Cougars best efforts. New players
Joe and Connor were outstanding and the entire Cougars squad gelled
together like never before this season. Now
its off to the Grand Final on the 13th to decide who truly is the best
team for 2008.
Q4
VAFC 20.9.129 defeating
BAFC 4.3.27
Goals - Cougars; Grills 7,
Cipolloni 5, Hopkins
2, Kelly 2, Carrucan 2, Cravino 1, Tyler 1
- Eagles; Hilton 3,
Handley 1
Best - Cougars
(from) Dube, Kelly, Cooper
and entire team with a great group effort!" VAFC

Aussie Rules Footy on Adelaide's 5AA

Yesterday

Footy and Canada Northwind's chances as part of my sports report with Jeff.

Next week I'll again be on with Jeff talking Sports but back to the
regular time of 1.30am Tuesday night/Wednesday morning Sth Aussie time or
10am Tuesday morning Nth American Mtn time.
Canada
Northwind wins big in their 1st game of the 08 Intl Cup!
A great and expected 1st up win for Canada 18.22 = 130 over Finland
0.0 = 0.
Thanks
to the Ontario Football League for sharing the following Press Release.
MELBOURNE,
Australia. – The Northwind have begun their International Cup campaign
in superb fashion with a massive 130 point victory over Finland. After
months of training and preparation for this event, Canada’s national
team dominated from start to finish against their inexperienced
opponents, taking full advantage of some perfect conditions at Royal Park
in inner Melbourne.
Guelph
Gargoyles Chris Cunning was superb up forward with 6 goals, as was BC
native Scott Fleming who kicked 4. All up there were 10 goal kickers for
Canada, who were prepared to share the ball around to create scoring
chances. The High Park Demons’ Dale Simnett was brilliant in the ruck,
really setting the tone for the team from the first bounce with a
dominant display around the ground. His onballers, led by George
Dimacakos who was playing his first game since breaking his ribs 7 weeks
earlier, were everywhere and continually pumped the Northwind inside
their attacking half of the ground where Cunning & Fleming were
dominating their opponents. Another who played a key role was small
forward Murray Lovett who kicked the team’s first goal and provided a
much needed spark all day long.
Team
vice-captain Aaron Falcione played a pivotal role at Centre Half Forward,
providing a focal point every time the ball entered the Canadian 50 metre
zone. His creativity and willingness to involve his teammates in each and
every play allowed the Canadians to be dangerous from all positions.
Vancouver’s James Maitland was also a dominate force up forward and on
the wing, with his height and athleticism proving too good a match for
the inexperienced Finnish players. James is going to prove a headache for
all teams in the tournament with his size and mobility. Captain Stefan
Leyhane played like the respected leader he is, not giving Finland any
chance to make a drive forward.
In
front of a large crowd which had assembled to cheer on the Northwind
team, the highlight of the game was the superb running goal from full
back Matthew Lowden who charged through the centre of the ground and
drilled a long goal from 50 metres out which inspired his teammates and
drew a huge roar from everyone watching on. Despite some inaccurate
kicking the coaching staff were very happy with today’s performance and
are excited for what the team can produce in their next match v Sweden.
The Swedes were defeated by Ireland today in their group match but are
sure to provide some tough opposition come Friday.
The
final score was:
Northwind
18.22 = 130 defeated Finland 0.0 = 0.
Goal
kickers for Canada: Chris Cunning 6, Scott Fleming 4, Murray Lovett 1,
James Maitland 1, Aaron Falcione 1, George Dimacakos 1, Danny McIlravey
