Europe Update: Ernie Stautner (r.i.p.) / Oliver Luck" Moose
82 year old Ernie Stautner, former three year Coach (’95-’97) of the Frankfurt
Galaxy died Tuesday in Arizona of complications from Diabetes and old age.
Stautner Coached Frankfurt in their best seasons as they went to two World
Bowls, winning one in Amsterdam in ’95 in three years. Stautner retired after
the ’97 season. Stautner is the first German born player to be elected into the
NFL Hall-of-Fame after a 14-year career as a starting Lineman for the Pittsburgh
Stealers (1950-63). Stautner was elected in the NFL Hall-of-Fame in 1969.
Stautner was Dallas Defencive Line Coach and later Defencive Coordinator from
1964 through 1988, when he and Landry were fired by new Owner Jerry Jones.
Stautner’s old boss Texas E. Schramm was the originator of what became NFL
Europe. It started in 1991 as the NFL “AAA” World League of American Football
and played it’s games in spring like the former United States Football League.
Former League President Oliver Luck, who purchased the MSL’s San Jose
Earthquake, one of that League’s most successful team’s will need to find a new
name for the club, which had just named them the “1836’s”, after the year the
city of Houston was founded. The former Houston Oiler’s (and University of West
VA) reserve QB (was is half German) had a lot of angry Tex-Mex zealots attack
him recently for allegedly bringing up “bad” memories of the City’s founding.
Sam Houston, the American Patriot, who the City WAS NOT named after said it was
in poor taste to bring up the Alamo (which is in San Antonio, by the way!) and
the war with Mexico (1836-47?). Said Luck: ‘We thought that 1836’s was a good
name!” I agree, Oliver. Another case of ‘Political Stupidity’, I guess. The
Major Soccer Leaguer, which had no Mexican players by the way, is making Luck
change the name…" Moose

NFLEL STAGES SCRIMMAGE
SERIES
THE NFL Europe League has confirmed its
scrimmage and combined workout schedule during training camp in Tampa Bay,
Florida. The six teams will meet in head-to-head combat on four separate
occasions before heading to Europe early next March.
The
first day of such action is next Tuesday (February 21), when the six teams
take part in combined workouts at Skyway Park, Tampa. Game condition
scrimmages take place at the same venue four days later, followed by
further combined practices on Wednesday March 1. The last action before
the teams trim their rosters to the 48 players who will board the plane to
Europe will be a series of game condition scrimmages at the University of
Tampa’s Pepin/Rood Stadium on Saturday March 4.

Meanwhile, the defending
champion Amsterdam Admirals were the team in the spotlight on the first
day of full team practices. Head coach
BART ANDRUS was happy with his players’ performance, saying:
“The defense has shown us the things that are important. They have great
speed, and the key thing is to keep that tempo up. They listened to what
we asked them to do and for the most part executed well. After one
practice they have shown me some positive things that we look for.”
NFL KICKERS AND
PUNTERS TAKE SHOT AT EUROPE
THE NFL Europe League’s future
kickers and punters are taking aim at a place on rosters for 2006
season as they go through their paces at Skyway Park in Tampa,
Florida. A total of 21 are trying to earn the chance to make one of
the six teams.
A sprinkling of old faces among
newer names has ensured that the 2006 kicking camp has quality and
experience, as each of them seek to become the new Todd France – the
Hamburg Sea Devils kicker who broke NFL Europe’s scoring record in
2005 with 91 points, and used his time in the league to earn a
kicking job in the NFL.
Among the kickers hoping to win a
spot on a 2006 NFL Europe roster is
OLA KIMRIN, who spent the
2001 and 2002 seasons playing for the Frankfurt Galaxy, and joined
the Cologne Centurions in 2004. The Swedish born 33-year old once
kicked a 65-yard field goal for the Denver Broncos in a preseason
game – two yards longer than the NFL regular season record set by
New Orleans’ Tom Dempsey.
One new face hoping to win a
roster during the three-day camp is
XAVIER BEITIA, who had a
successful four-year career as kicker for Florida State. The
strong-legged kicker once booted a 60-yard field goal for the
Seminoles.
“The quality of competition here
is second to none,” said Beitia. “You have some of the best college
kickers in the country from the past five or six years. NFL Europe
gives each of us a great opportunity to hone our skills and get
better, while striving to win a World Bowl.”
HAYDEN EPSTEIN
is another returning to NFL
Europe – but at a different position. In 2004 Epstein was the punter
for the World Bowl-winning Berlin Thunder, but he returns two years
later hoping to win a job as a kicker – his more natural position.
“I had a great experience two
years ago, so when they asked me if I wanted to come back to NFL
Europe I was excited,” said Epstein. “I am going this year as a
kicker, and I feel more comfortable doing that. There are so many
good kickers out here and there are only six jobs to win, so it is
going to be a fight.”
Hoping to emulate his strong 2005
campaign will be punter TRAVIS
DORSCH, who was voted to the all-NFLEL team last season
after leading the league with a 42.5-yard gross average per punt.
MIKE BARR returns looking
for his third consecutive season in NFL Europe, having punted for
the Frankfurt Galaxy in 2004 and 2005.
One player who has made a long
journey to Tampa Bay, Florida, to join the group is Australian
CHAD PARRISH, who is
trying out as a punter. Parrish is hoping to follow in the footsteps
of fellow-countrymen Darren Bennett, Matt McBriar and Ben Graham who
have all made the switch from Australian Rules football to the NFL.
“It’s all quite new to me,”
admits Parrish. “There are a couple of other Aussies in the league
who have already laid the groundwork so hopefully I can ride on
their wave.”

NFLEL ASSIGNS NATIONAL PLAYERS AFTER SUCCESSFUL MINI-CAMP IN TAMPA
THE professional football
dream of many of the world’s leading international players took a significant
step forward with their assignment to NFL Europe League teams for training
camp in Tampa Bay, Florida.
Following a successful and
intense four-day national player mini-camp at Skyway Park in Tampa, the roster
of 78 participants was cut down to 58 players from 11 countries. The players
were split between the six NFLEL teams, who begin full team practices next
week.
Teams will eventually carry
eight national players on their rosters for the regular season, which kicks
off on March 18.
TONY ALLEN,
NFLEL Director of International Player Development, said that the
selection process had been harder than ever. “We have so many outstanding
players and athletes that it becomes more difficult every year. We had an
outstanding camp and I am confident that the players selected have the
potential to make significant contributions for their teams.
“We had a younger group of
players this year and even those who have not made it this time can be proud
of their efforts during national camp. They have made progress and will be
ready to challenge for roster places in the future.”
The 2006 class of national
players includes some familiar names. Tight end WERNER HIPPLER, who
first played in the NFLEL for the Frankfurt Galaxy in 1995, returns for his
third season at the Cologne Centurions and needs to appear in only one game to
set a new NFLEL record of 89 games played.
English wide receiver SCOTT
McCREADY, who returns for a second season with the Hamburg Sea Devils,
holds two distinctions – the first British player to win a Super Bowl ring
(New England Patriots 2001, and the first national player to lead the NFLEL in
a major individual category (59 receptions for the Scottish Claymores in
2004). He was also leading the league in receptions in 2005 before suffering a
season-ending injury.
German safety RICHARD
YANCY returns to the Rhein Fire after spending the past two NFL seasons on
the practice squads of the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers, while fan
favorite DANIEL BENETKA is back on the Frankfurt Galaxy defensive line.
Berlin Thunder defensive
lineman CHRISTIAN MOHR, who spent the 2004 NFL season with the Seattle
Seahawks, is currently undergoing assessment on his rehabilitation from a
previous injury and his status will be determined at a later date.

From Neil Reynolds "NFLEL
OPENS TRAINING CAMP IN TAMPA; NATIONAL PLAYERS ARE FIRST IN ACTION"
THE road to Yello Strom World
Bowl XIV has begun on the playing fields of Tampa, Florida, with the opening
of action at NFL Europe League training camp.
Activity is underway with a
four-day mini-camp featuring 80 national – non-American – players, who are
looking to secure places on the training camp rosters of the six NFLEL teams.
After national camp wraps up tomorrow (Thursday), it will be time for the
first of the American players to arrive on Friday, when the offensive skill
players check-in for passing camp. They will be joined on Monday by the
linemen and defensive players.
First full team practices,
featuring approximately 250 players allocated by NFL teams, begin next
Wednesday (February 15). Teams will scrimmage and practice in the Tampa until
early March, before leaving for Europe for the new NFEL season, which kicks
off on March 18.
Among the most familiar names
at training camp will be Dallas Cowboys quarterback DREW HENSON,
allocated to the Rhein Fire, Miami Dolphins play-caller BROCK BERLIN,
who will be suiting up for the Hamburg Sea Devils, and KLIFF KINGSBURY,
who saw regular season action at quarterback for the New York Jets in the past
season and is now with the Cologne Centurions.
All teams will be staging two
back-to-back practices in the mornings at the following sites. All NFLEL team
workouts are open to the public and media:
Amsterdam
Admirals University of South Florida, E.Fowler Avenue
Berlin
Thunder Ed Radice Sports Complex, Ed Radice Drive
Cologne
Centurions Admiral Farragut Academy, 501 Park Street North
Frankfurt
Galaxy University of Tampa, W. Kennedy Boulevard
Hamburg Sea
Devils Skyway Park, George Road
Rhein
Fire Tampa Catholic High School, N.Rome Avenue
Combined workouts/scrimmages
featuring all six teams will be held on the following days: February 22, 25,
March 1 (Ed Radice Sports Complex) and March 4 (University of Tampa).
The 78 national players at
camp – many of the best international players in the world – hit the practice
field the morning after Super Bowl XL. The countries represented at camp are
Germany, Mexico, Japan, Sweden, England, the Netherlands, France, Finland, USA
and Russia.
Among this year’s group are
the league’s all time leading national receiver SCOTT MCCREADY and
35-year old tight end WERNER HIPPLER, who will break Scott Couper’s
all-time NFLEL record of 88 games played if he makes the Cologne Centurions
roster and plays in one game.
Seven of this year’s national
player group have recent NFL experience. Defensive backs RICHARD YANCY
(San Diego Chargers) and CLAUDIUS OSEI (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), linebacker
ADEN DURDE (Carolina Panthers), and defensive linemen PATRICE
MAJONDO-MWAMBA (Denver Broncos) and ANDERS AKERSTROM (New Orleans
Saints) were all members of the 2005 International Player Development Program –
spending the season on the practice squads of an NFL team.
CHRISTIAN MOHR
(Seattle Seahawks) was in the 2004 program and was in camp with the eventual
Super Bowl runners-up this year. British defensive tackle LORN MAYERS
made history in 2005 as the youngest player ever to be signed by an NFL team,
joining the Oakland Raiders for training camp at the age of 20. Team assignments
for the players will be finalized at the conclusion of national camp
NFL Europe Director of
International Player and Football Development TONY ALLEN, who oversees
national camp, said: “It is exciting to work with this group of players. We have
some old faces returning, but also some very good first and second year players
who we think have a big future in this league, and possibly in the NFL.
“We are getting closer to
producing international athletes who can step up and contribute in the NFL – you
just need to see the strides made by some of our nationals who have been part of
the International Player Development Program over the last two seasons. These
players here all know that if they put in the work they could be taking that
step.”

14th year team previews!" Myk Aussie
NFL may be over after this Sundays Pro Bowl but don't worry Footy
fans we cover NFL Europe extensively on MYKwebWORLD. Moose sends me a weekly
report and I also receive excellent reports direct from the NFL Europe great
people that I have meet at 3 of the past 4 Super Bowls.
From Moose "OK - The suspense was over as far as to how long the NFL owners would take to
deliberate on the future of the NFL 'AAA' League before the CFL's Grey Cup Game
was played. The NFL decided that the losses were OK to bare and the NFL will
keep it's 'AAA' League afloat for five more seasons, through 2010 and then the
next decision will be made on the League's future. That being said, I've been
ordered to cover the League until then. The passages of NFL E stars past and
future will take place, probably this season as Cologne's venerable Werner
Hippler will probably play his final innings this spring, and Philadelphia's
former Hawai'i QB, Timmy Chang, gets his chance after failing to stick on three
NFL clubs roster during the training camp of the 2005.
The season begins earlier
than normal this season because the 'girlee-men' who run around kicking a little
ball, in shorts (or is it laderhosen, or tights), called 'World Cup soccer' has
IT'S Championship(s?) in June. The season starts March 18th and runs through the
Championship, May 27th, Saturday, @ LTU Stadium, home of the Rhein Fire. Hippler,
mentioned above, the best european player ever, will break conceivably four
alltime marks this spring, maybe five: (1) Most games played in an NFL E
player's career, (2) Most games played by a TE in NFL E history, (3) Most
allstar squads played on,
(4) Most TDs by an NFL E TE, and (5) Most seasons played by an NFL E player
(10). He may also play in his fifth NFL E Championship, so that could be a sixth
record.
Team - By - Team Previews / Predicted order of finish:
(1) Cologne Centurians - 12th season. Alltime Record: 52 wins / 60 losses, 1-1
record in NFL E Championships. Coach (1st yr.) Darryl Sims (five yr.-NFL DLm,
Defencive Coordinator of the Champion Amsterdam Admirals last year). QBs: Kliff
Kingsbury (N.Y.Jets), Tory Woodbury (Buffalo) & Kentaro Namiki (Japan, 3-yr
vet). Other key players: WRs: Antonio Brown, Satoshi Shimizo, Noriaki Kinoshita,
O.J. Small. DLm: Mauricio Lopez, Tony & LaWylon Brown (no relations). OLm: Marco
Lauka, Clint Strickland. LBs: Rikiya Ishida (one-time Hawai'ian Islander-Af2),
Jeremy Cain, Carl Johan-Borl, TE Werner Hippler, Calen Powell, RBs: Sandino
Octobre, Larry Croom. DBs: Justin Perkins, Atari Bigby. The biggest story of the
Year will be of course who wins the 'World' Bowl, NFL E Championship and along
the way maybe the play of Hippler (TE) and Rhein QB Timmy Chang, if he beats out
Cowboy-on-loan, Drew Henson. Predcited Finish: First, barely over defending
Champ Amsterdam, World Bowl, NFL E Champions.
(2) Amsterdam Admirals - 14th season. Alltime Record: 66 wins / 67 losses, 1-2
in NFL E Championships. Coach: Bart Andrus, 6th season, 1-0 in World Bowls. QBs:
Gibran Hamdan (Seattle, 3-yr NFL E vet), Jared Allen (Tampa Bay), Reggie
Robertson (Oakland).
Other key players: TE Trent Smith, WRs: James Broussard, Jon Carter, OLm: Dave
Pearson, Jeremy Parquez, Eric Pears, Kyle Schmidt, DLm: Aarion Dixon, Eddie
Freeman, Otis Grigsby, RBs: Loliki Bonga-Wango, Fred Rusell, DBs: Kenei Satomi
(another ex-Hawai'ian Islander-Af2), Lennie Green (half canadian/half german
like Hippler), Lance Frazier, Raymond Ventrone, LBs: Yu Ogawa, Michihiro
Nakajima, Phillippe Gardent, Matt Grootegood. The Admirals will probably one day
build a statue for Coach Andrus after he lead this winless in the Championship,
last non-german franchise the World Bowl last June. With the Hippler
going-away-party band-wagon in Cologne and with ex-Defencive Coordinator Sims
in Deuschlaund this time around and without RB Jarrett Payton it'll be too tough
to repeat. Predicted Finish: Second place but a return to the World Bowl a
strong possibility! Sims for Coach of the year?
(3) Rhein Fire, 12th season. Alltime Record: 61-54, 2-3 in five World Bowls.
Coach: (1st yr.) Jim Tomsula. QBs: Timmy Chang (Univ. Hawai'i / Philly-NFL
allocated) & Drew Henson. RBs: Greg Hanoian, Laurent Marcelene, DeCori
Birmingham. TEs: Yoan Schnee (Switzerland, 2-yr vet), Aaron Halterman, WRs:
Gustavo Tella (Mexico), Jason Anderson, DBs: Onoh Ozongwu, Rich Yancy (two-time
NFL practice squad player), LBs: Shaun Smith (England), Rich Ajdei, OLm: Pete
Heyer (local product/2 time NFL practice squad player), Harvey Dahl, Mike
Kralalik. The big problem is the NFL didn't allocate any DLm here. The street
free agents will make up the bulk of the contingent on that side of the ball.
That and returning players. Too bad. I would love to see Chang, the NCAA's
alltime leading passer get a shot @ the World Bowl like Rolovich had several
yrs.,
ago. Predicted Finish:3rd in the League, no World Bowl appearance.
(4) Frankfurt Galaxy, 14th season. Alltime Record: 67-68-1, 3-3 in six World
Bowls. Coach: Mike Jones, second season. QBs: Craig Ochs (Buffalo), Jeff Otis
(Arizona), Bryson Spinner (Richmond Spiders / San Francisco, Other key players:
WRs: Hugo Lira, Marvin Allen, Max Tregubov, Jeremy Carter, Tom Crowder, LBs:
Ulrich Winkler, Shurendy Concetion, Jared Newberry, DLm: Danny Benetka (sixth
yr. man - may break Werner Hippler's alltime 'games played' mark with the
Galaxy), Will Suitek, Aki Jones, Elliot Harris, Jerome Nichols, OLm: Charles
Misant, Jason Nerys, Isaac Snell, Quasim Mitchell. The biggest problem is who
will QB this talented team. Obviously the D-Line with Benetka returning and the
possible addition of Conni Ritzmann (Tennessee) might make them unstoppable but
without a proven kicker and no clear cut QB they will get to 5-5 or 6-4 and no
World Bowl appearance. Serves them right for letting Hippler go several yrs ago.
It would have made a better story for him to retired after 13 yrs. in the bigs
(10-NFLE) w/ the Galaxy.
(5) Berlin Thunder, 14th season. Alltime Record: 67-67-1, 4-1 in World Bowls.
Coach: Rick Lantz (former Univ. of Virginia Defencive Coordintator. QBs: Brock
Berlin (no kidding-Miami), Killian James (Kansas City) and Chad Mortenson (no,
not related to Mort from ESPN), TEs: Irio Luoto (Finland), DT Sam Gutenkunst, FB
Joakim Holm (Sweden), WR Robert Redd, RB DeJuan Green, ??, Olm: Pat Estes, Orrin
Thompson, Joel Rodriquez, Toby Cecil (related to Chuck Cecil), LBs: Jermaine
Taylor(1st player in Pros ever from tiny Div . III Bridge Water College of VA).
This team is thin in depth.
There is already talk of trading Berlin (the QB not the team!) to Rhein for more
RB, et, al depth. Good luck. These guys have wqon enough Championships anyway!
Predicted Finish: 5th place, 4-6.
(6) Homburg Sea Dragons, 14th season. Alltime Record: 69-66, 2-3 in World Bowls,
all with Coach Jack Bicknell(started as Barcelona Dragons; his alltime record:
an NFL E record 14 seasons, 71 wins, 65 losses, 2-3 in World Bowl). QBs: Lang
Campbell (Clev.), B.J. Symons (Houston) and Scott MacCready, unless he moves
back to WR. MacCready, from England got a Super Bowl ring from New England's
practice squad a couple yrs., back. It'll be the last ring he gets for a while.
The rest of the allocated players look like fourth stringers to me: Centre:
Augie (no, stop laughing, really, it's Augie) Hoffman, DT Bastian Lano (back
after a yr. off) Jeff Brown CB (Eng- land) and WRs: Rich Smith and Jovan
Witherspoon, brother of Carolina LB. Predicted Finish: Last, sixth place. Poor
Cowboy Jack!
Predicted order of finish: (1) Cologne, (2) Amsterdam, (3) Rhein, (4) Frankfurt,
(5) Berlin, (6) Hamburg.
World Bowl Pick: Cologne 22, Amsterdam 21
Coach of the Year: Bart Andrus, Amsterdam
M.V.P: Gibran Hamdan, QB, Amsterdam
