upset Duncan seems to be on the out of the Lions now that they have signed

"CFL Free Agency report" GreatWhiteNorth
It's nowhere near as good as training camp opening, but today is one of the days
I look forward to the most of the entire off-season... and not just because I
survived another Valentines Day with a positive bank balance and my marriage
still intact. While there's been a lot of commentary that this is a 'mediocre'
free agent crop, I think there's some real help available to those that need it
and are willing to pay the price to go out and get it. My speculations are based
on who I feel has some money to spend, the need to target certain areas, media
opinions and gut feelings.
Jason Tucker - In my mind, the prize of the free agent season... he'll draw
interest from Hamilton and Saskatchewan, and perhaps a few others will kick his
tires, but he'll re-sign in Edmonton for around $180,000-$200,000. He went to
free agency 2 years ago before returning to the Esks in May.
George Hudson - The top O-lineman available, and rumoured to have turned down a
contract offer from Ottawa that would've made him the top-paid non-QB in the
league. I've heard speculation that he'll go to Hamilton, and that makes sense
with coach Kauahi and Paopao moving there as well as them giving up Comiskey and
Bakker in the Maas trade(s), but he'll also draw interest from BC and Edmonton
I'd expect. This could be the last chance for teams to front-load a longer-term
contract to avoid cap penalties when they kick in for 2007... and Hudson could
be the kind to warrant a 5 year deal. Edmonton won't have the cap room and I
don't think Buono will open the wallet, so Hamilton wins this race.
Barrin Simpson - I would put him among the 'difference makers' available, and
he's narrowed it down to 6 teams that he feels might be interested, eliminating
BC, Calgary and Montreal. I have to think Winnipeg, Ottawa and Hamilton would
be the likeliest suitors with Saskatchewan also inquiring. Toronto has stated
that they're re-signing Mike O'Shea, so that might curtail their interest.
Ultimately, I think Winnipeg is going to get him, and while he won't come cheap,
he'll be a guy that they can rebuild their defence around.
Josh Ranek - Hamilton, Steeltown and da Hammer are all in the running for him,
so it's pretty safe to say he'll be wearing a Ticat jersey.
Bobby Singh - One of the more interesting ones out there. The Lions' top
lineman from last year, an elected position with the school board in Richmond,
and the Lions being thin on the O-line all point to him being back with the
club, but reports are that they're $50,000 apart on a deal (don't know over what
term), and Wally seemed to be digging in his heels. If the Esks can't afford
Hudson, they'll definitely make a pitch for Singh. I can also see interest from
Winnipeg, Hamilton and Ottawa, but I'm guessing that the Esks meet the demands
that the Lions won't and provide him with a spot closer to his Richmond home and
his roots there.
Pascal Cheron - BC probably makes a grab for Cheron if they lose Singh early and
aren't in the running for Hudson. It's really a case of dominos falling with
the top 3-4 O-linemen in the free agent crop. Toronto may also have to look at
filling a spot too.
Richard Karikari - A legitimate Canadian starter in the secondary should attract
attention, and this could be one of the few free agents that will attract
consideration from Calgary. I would think that BC will also be interested, as
will Winnipeg, both of whom have some needs in the secondary. Hamilton and
Ottawa will also likely be in the race and I wouldn't rule out continued pursuit
from the Als. I predict that Winnipeg gets there man here.
Keith Stokes - Some talk of Toronto being interested if they can't re-sign
Levingson to a contract with a pay-cut (sound familiar). Saskatchewan could be
interested if they're using Holmes as a regular starter and want to save the
wear and tear of special teams. Ultimately, I think he fits best in Hamilton
where he'll replace Archie Amerson as a fifth receiver in a pass-happy offence
and see special teams duty.
Jude St. John - One of the last of the proven O-line prospects out there, it
will depend on how the rest of the dominos fall. I'm thinking that Ottawa steps
up to the plate in an effort to fill the hole created by losing Hudson and
Cheron.
Randy Spencer - Ottawa is the front-runner to pursue him, though BC and Montreal
will likely also be in pursuit. He can add Canadian depth to nearly any team
and the ability to start and provide a pass rush from the DT position... and he
comes without the 6 figure salary. Ottawa seems like a good fit, but I don't
think this is a guy that will sign a 5-year contract unless it is for well over
market value, as his stock is likely to rise with a few more seasons under his
belt. Look for Ottawa to dangle Legault or Pilon as trade bait to help in other
areas if they can secure Spencer.
Ray Mariuz - I think Winnipeg will be a strong contender for his services, with
a stated need to upgrade their Canadian talent. I predict a move there, or a
return to Toronto, and it comes down to money in either case.
Antonius Bonner - Coming off reconstructive knee surgery should cut down the
interested parties. Might be a fit in BC to replace the departing Simpson, or
could also be an interesting fit in Ottawa where they've released Cromartie.
BC's where he lands because of the ability to play a tweener role.
Elijah Thurmon - Unless the Riders manage to land Jason Tucker, I can't see them
letting Thurman get away. Even with the return of Matt Dominguez this year,
Thurmon's presence there is critical, and I can't see the grass or the contracts
being any greener elsewhere at this point.
Trevis Smith - Surprisingly, I don't think there will be a big bidding war. I
can't see any team desperate enough to take on the public relations nightmare of
employing this guy.
Paul McCallum - BC lands him giving him a fresh start and taking the heat off of
Duncan O'Mahony from having to regain his mojo placekicking. It's kind of a
waste of one of the better kickers in windy conditions to coop him up in a dome.
Matt Kellet - Goes home to Regina to compete for the vacancy if McCallum
leaves... and the Riders aren't better for it... but at least he's not O'Mahony.
Shannon Garrett - I think that Garrett was considering retirement until he lost
some property(ies) in hurricane Katrina. He only allowed one TD against all of
last year, and that was in game 18 against Nik Lewis. With a pulled hamstring
he came back the next week to shut Lewis down... and shut him up (hard to know
which is the bigger feat). He should attract some interest from BC and
potentially Montreal and Edmonton also wants him back. If he was going to
re-sign in Edmonton though, I'd guess that it would've happened by now, so I'm
guessing that he joins former business partner Terry Vaughn in La Belle
Province.
Malcolm Frank - One of the league's senior citizens, Frank showed little
evidence of being done last year. He isn't likely to attract a lot of interest
given his age, so I think he's back with the Esks for one last season.
Sandy Annunziata - Back to the Argos as the consolation prize if they lose St.
John and aren't able to replace him with another free agent. Sort of the last
resort measure from the free agency pool.
Ted White - sorry... I thought I could keep a straight face while typing that
some team would be interested. Can't do it.
Just read on Sportsnet that Edmonton has re-signed Malcolm Frank before he
became a free agent. I hate to have been the one to burst his bubble about the
lack of interest out on the open market." GreatWhiteNorth
A reply from Blue Fan. "Really stuck your neck out there you gambler. At this
point in time I would've placed interest in Frank outside of Edmonton being zero
and purely for the same age factor you provided. He'd either be back with the
Esks or would have to sit and wait until near the end of training camp for
interest from other parties. Generally 37 year old import DBs are nowhere to be
found on a GM's free agent shopping list. That's not to say he can't play, but
most would be looking to land players a touch younger unless their defensive
secondary is a real mess. Then again maybe Taman had Malcolm's number on speed
dial and was just itching for the clock to strike midnight. Re-signed Spencer

Seahawks JP Darche the Canadian in the Super Bowl!
I was listening to QR77 in
Calgary last week. Mark Steven had JP Darche the Seahawks Long snapper on his
show for 20+ minutes. It was great listening to him talking about McGill Uni
footy and CFL Argo's and Canada and about Seattle and the Super Bowl. They were
saying he is the one Canadian in this weeks Super Bowl XL.
From Ravi Total-CFLer "I believe
that Brendan Taman once said that a good thing to do is teach your child to
long-snap as they can make lots of money potentially doing so. Darche has become
a millionaire performing that task."

Anwar Stewart re signs with the Alouettes!
This is great news for the Alouettes as Anwar has been one of the very best CFL
defenders the past 3+ years. After I meet and chatted with Anwar when he was a
Stampeder, Anwar can be seen in many of the Total-CFLwebTV/MYKwebTV shows from
Grey Cup 05, at the airport as the Alouettes arrive in Calgary with their new
Grey Cup 2002 Grey Cup rings and then as I interview Anwar 1 on 1 in the locker
rooms in Edmonton right after their Grey Cup 2001 victory. Out of all the CFL
players I have had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Anwar is probably
the guy that likes the way I promote the CFL to the World the most.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ANWAR STEWART FOLLOWS HIS TEAMMATES HOME
The 2004 CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player remains an Alouette.
Montreal, Jan. 30, 2006 - Montreal Alouettes' Vice President and General Manager
Jim Popp announced today that the 2004 CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player has
signed a new two-year contract plus an option and will remain with the Alouettes
through 2008.
Anwar Stewart (6'3'', 237 lbs.) started his CFL career with the Calgary
Stampeders in 2001. He signed with the Alouettes in June 2002 as a free agent
and became a key member of the Alouette defence. Over four seasons with the
organization, he has made 95 tackles, 27 quarterback sacks, and seven
interceptions for 110 yards and three touchdowns. He is 30.
Stewart was named the 2004 CFL Most Outstanding Player after an exceptional
season for a rush end. Stewart finished the season with 25 tackles and led the
Alouettes with nine quarterback sacks and 11 pass knockdowns. He also returned
four interceptions for 64 yards and two touchdowns.
The only two free agents from the 2005 Alouettes who have not renewed their
contract are free safety Richard Karikari and quarterback Ted White.
Anwar Stewart will be available for interviews at the Alouettes' downtown
office, located at 1260 University (corner Ste. Catherine) at 2:30 p.m. today.
